ll righty then, here we are! It’s May, it’s “that” time of the year for all lake lovers and let’s get ready! We have gardening specialist Gayla Fairchilds from Hazlewood’s Nurseries in Pell City who will share her joys of container gardening and all the knowledge that goes with it. Her creations are fabulous, she mixes all the elements that matter such a plant needs and heights and mixtures of texture and color that will make your patio pop. This is a great method for those who don’t want to attack large areas to enhance their homes with minimal work. Our friendly Alabama Extension Office folks also offer their tips, as always, just visit their office anytime for the help and expertise you need. Then there’s Kelly Sandlin, an expert in interior design who will show us her latest design tips and what’s “in” for spring and summer for porches and furnishings and window treatments. She’ll tell us how to renew and refresh and get our entertaining areas ready for the coming season. Then we visit the legacy of Stemley Station, where local folks have come to depend on great eats and atmosphere. There’s their classic catfish and seafood entrees’, along with just about anything else your taste buds could crave. You’ll find a preview for Pell City’s famed Block Party coming up in June and a look at what’s happening with Lakefest as well. Both these events are ones not to miss and we want you to have all the information you need to get out there and have lots of fun. As for me, I decided to share some of my favorite burger concoctions, you can make them individually or prepare the burgers and offer your family and friends a “burger bar” with fixings to suit everyone. We all love to grill hamburgers outside, but let’s take a look outside the traditional mustard, ketchup and onions!

akeside residents warned me, you don’t want to camp over there. “Birds,” they said. “There are lots of birds.” I initially dubbed the tiny island, between Sundance and General Lee Marinas, as “Barn Hill Island,” because someone told me a big red barn used to sit high up

on the hill there. After the overnight campout with my son, Ken, and his 5-year-old daughter, McKenzie “Pooky”. I think a better name for the small parcel of land surrounded by water is “Goose Island.” Yes, it was definitely the Canada Geese’s home turf, and they didn’t like it one bit when the two kayaks loaded with

people and gear arrived along the rocky shores of their small island. I had mentioned to my son that we should paddle to the island and camp out. It was only a suggestion. He was talking about taking his little girl to Lake Guntersville Park, and I told him this is an adventure of a lifetime. That was on a Monday, and I didn’t hear back from him, so I scheduled a whitewater trip

for Saturday. Well, late Friday he calls me - so typical. “You ready to go,” he said. “Go where?” I asked. “To that island,” he replied. “Well, sure,” I said, without thinking about the whitewater trip I had already planned for Saturday morning. I later told him I had already planned the whitewater trip, but should be through by 2 p.m. We went ahead planned to meet at my house, load the boats, food and gear, and head out from there Saturday afternoon. Needless to say, I barely had enough time to say hello and goodbye to my wife, Laura, who was kind enough to pick up a few items from the grocery store for our overnight campout. By 3-4 p.m., we were at General Lee campground unloading the kayaks. It was a short paddle to our “overnight adventure.” 10
Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - May 2013
I had paddled that morning for about three hours in whitewater, so it was nice to have a relaxing short paddle in calm water to the island. The wind was pretty stiff as we paddled on the open lake water, but we made it safely without mishap toting a bunch of gear to the island. Once we unloaded all the gear, Ken paddled back to the marina to get a load of firewood, while Pooky and I set up camp. Boy, she sure was worried about her daddy. About every five minutes she asked when he was getting back. Eventually, I saw him paddling back to the island. “There he is,” I told her. She couldn’t see him, but I was finally able to point him out. She was happy to see her daddy. Me too. When Ken reached the island, we unloaded the firewood, which was plenty for a big fire Saturday night.

McKenzie “Pooky” tries her luck fishing while daddy Ken maneuvers the kayak.
Pooky set her small chair up at the edge of the water and soaked her feet while fishing with her small rod and reel set, which by the way, she dropped in the water and lost on our trip back to the mainland. Ken, who is an excellent fisherman, worked his way around the island. I focused my attention on dinner. I brought a small grill to place over a fire to cook hamburgers. By nightfall, we were eating big ‘ole hamburgers, chips and sipping soft drinks. The campout on the island reminded me of the time I was a Boy Scout and our troop paddled to a lake island for an overnight camping trip. 12
Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - May 2013
I was ready for bed early. I just laid my sleeping bag on the ground for the night. Ken brought his hammock. He swears by it. He bought me one for Christmas, but I haven’t tried it out. I started to bring it on this trip, but didn’t think there were enough trees to go around. It was a great experience for Pooky, a first, and one she will probably remember and our beautiful Logan Martin Lake for the rest of her life. I really enjoyed being out on the lake camping out with her and Ken, and I really look forward to another trip on Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. So until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

ill and Kay Huffaker know how to tell a story, whether it’s Kay talking about the time she chased down a burglar and grabbed him “by the hair of the head,” or Bill, who is also the pastor of Cragdale Baptist Church, baptizing more than 20 people in Logan Martin Lake at one time. But that’s not all they can do. Since 1984, the Huffakers have owned and operated Stemley Station, near the house where Kay grew up. Bill

served in the Navy and worked for a trucking company for 23 years until he decided to change direction when rumors surfaced that the company was about to be sold. According to a history of the restaurant on the back of the menu, “The idea of a small, rustic, country mom and pop place was to be the theme. The process of clearing huge pine trees from the property provided the logs for the original building. The logs were taken to a saw mill, cut into lengths and squared on three

sides. They were then delivered to our back yard, where Bill spent 10 to 12 hours a day ‘skinning’ 400 logs with Kay’s great-grandfather’s draw knife, which can still be seen hanging on the wall, and restacking them. Several Stemley residents helped with the construction. Cloyd Hutto provided the log laying experience, with Bill and our sons, Van and Billy, providing the labor. Kay was the go-fer, on the road going and getting the materials they needed.” The first night of business was in May of 1985. There was no advertising or announcement, just a sign that said “open” out front. They ended up with a full house anyway. The original building burned down Oct. 4, 1999. “As we watched 14 years of our lives go up in flames, it was hard to imagine being able to start over again, but by the grace of God and the men from our church, plus
a very special customer friend and his two sons, Stemley Station was reborn,” Huffaker said. That first night, it was just the Huffakers and one waitress. It’s still a family affair, with Bill III now in charge of food preparation and pit cooking the steaks. “It’s a 10-foot by three-foot pit, so you can fit a lot in there,” Bill said. “He can cook 70 steaks in three hours, and they’re all cooked to order. He can tell just by touching them how done they are.” They also employ a husband and wife, a mother and daughter, and a 78-year-old woman who cooks the fish, and a pair of sisters. “We’re kind of turning into an old folks’ home,” Kay said. And they still don’t advertise, although word of mouth has spread to the point that they get customers May 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 15

Pretty much any cut of steak other than New York Strip is available, along with hamburgers, hamburger steak, shrimp, and what Kay characterized as “the best chicken on the planet.” That would be an 8 ounce boneless breast, available grilled or fried. “It has a lot to do with the seasoning,” Bill explained. “We’ve had lots of people say it’s the best chicken they ever ate.”

The fare is hearty and diverse at Stemley Station. The grilled chicken has a following all its own.
Stemley Station does not sell alcohol, and church groups are always welcome. They have hosted funeral gatherings, class meetings and Christmas and other holiday parties as well. “We just really enjoy people,” Bill said. “We really enjoy meeting people and becoming friends with them. We host prayer groups and funeral parties, and I have even preached some of the funerals for our customers who have passed away. And Kay has sung at some of them.” Kay points out that she sang at a funeral in Ohatchee for a man who had eaten with

K, burgers are great, just about no matter what. And grilled hamburgers are just a “given” for lakeside dwellers, as well as for so many others, but I have come across some alternatives you may not have tried. I actually used real ground round for these, but for an even healthier alternative, ground turkey works just as well. I’ve done it and it’s true. Once you put all the “works” on these things, your taste buds will never know the difference, I assure you. Your doctor and your cholesterol counts will though.

But either way you choose to go, the taste is great and I promise, they’re good. I got one recipe, the Sautéed Mushroom and Cheese Burger, from a restaurant I worked in while a student at the University of Georgia, how long ago, no, I’m not saying! Another, the Nacho Burger, I just sort of made up, and what I call hors’doeuvres burgers, just from playing around in the kitchen. I refuse to call them “sliders” as has become the trend, as that brings up visions for me of those flat backed biting turtles that love the lake-and I don’t mean they should be

annihilated, I just don’t think the name is very appealingso I chose my own name for burger appetizers. You can play with these recipes so many ways according to the tastes of you and yours, but I will offer the basics that may come in handy for a backyard get-together. Another way to use the recipes is to set up a “burger bar,” putting out all the “fixings” so your guests can pick and choose their favorites. I’ve done this with nachos and fajitas and it’s an easy way to serve and please a crowd. Collecting a few chafing dishes or using the new heated serving pieces-sort of like a series of small crockpots in one piece-works very well, too, in keeping toppings warm that need to be served heated. I’m going to list the ingredients needed based on producing about four good sized burgers, using about six to eight ounces of meat per burger, except for the “cocktail” burgers, for which I use about three ounces. So, off we go with some ideas I hope you find tasty and a little different from the usual burger, although there’s always a place for them too. And oh yeah-experimenting with the breads you use makes it fun, too. Put out a basket of assorted bread, with everything from hoagies to onion rolls to Kaisers, even pumpernickel (great for the Mushroom Cheese version!)

s always, this year’s annual Pell City Hometown Block Party promises fun for the whole family. “We are expanding this year,” said Erica Grieve, executive director for the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce. “The expansion will add close to 35 more vendor spots and allow more room for people to enjoy the music and entertainment.” The 14th Annual Hometown Block Party is from 5:30 until 11:30 p.m. Friday, June 7 in downtown Pell City. There is no admission charge. Grieve said the Block Party Committee received approval from the Alabama Department of Transportation to expand along Cogswell Avenue to include the section between 18th Street and 19th Street. “We are also adding a VIP location for our Diamond, Gold and Silver sponsors, and a rest area with tables and chairs for the crowd,” she said. “The Chamber of Commerce will sell Block Party t-shirts with this year’s theme: ‘Rock the Block!’” she said. Grieve said the Block Party is still in need of sponsors and vendors. The sponsor and vendors application deadline is May 31. “We had an estimated 16,000 people at last year’s Block Party,
and 120 vendors,” she said. Grieve said the Block Party Entertainment and Stages include: — Motown Stage with the Silk e Smooth Band. — Inspirational Stage with various local gospel artists. — Country Rock Stage with the Leverton Brothers and Wing Nuts. — Impersonator stage with Pam Jenkins as “June Carter Cash” and “Loretta Lynn,” Memory Lane Quartet as “Statler Brothers,” Terry Turner, “Man of Many Voices,” Bart Connell, Hot Tennessee band, Shake Ragg and more. — Multi-performance Stage featuring Starzz Performing Arts and the Pell City Line Dancers. Grieve said the Block Party will also have the Teen Block and the Kids Corner, with rides for the kids. Some rides include a fee. Grieve said shuttles will operate on First Avenue, Second Avenue and Third Avenue North to BB&T Bank, First Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church. Additional shuttles will operate between the Pell City High School parking lot through downtown Pell City to CVS and the Pell City Steak House. “The Block Party is a fun event for the entire family,” she said. “With music, food, rides, shopping and entertainment—there is something for everyone.” For more information call the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce at 205-338-3377.

T
he third annual Lakefest and Boat Show event returns to the Horizons community, located at 6008 Rainbow Rd. in Pell City, May 17-19. This year’s event has been extended through Sunday and will focus on local vendors with products and services that are unique to the lake lifestyle, according to event organizer, Eric Housh. Housh says the boat show which has previously been held on Friday and Saturday, has averaged north of 5,000 attendees each year. He expects another great crowd at this year’s Lakefest. Housh says the purpose of the event is to promote Logan Martin Lake and the surrounding area. “We feel like Logan Martin Lake is a 28
jewel for our area,” said Housh. “It is an absolute treasure.” Friday night’s attractions include the band, ChaseNthedragons, whose lead singer has been featured on the Fox reality series, “The Next Great American Band.” A free fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m., and residents of the Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home will be recognized on stage prior to its beginning. Saturday’s entertainment includes performances by the Pell City Line Dancers, the Starzz dance team and Nashville Bound, a musical group featuring young, aspiring county music singers. Lakefest will also feature vendors, food and games. Lawn chairs and blankets are permitted. Boats will be on hand for test drives throughout the weekend, including fishing boats from Nitro and Tracker; pontoon

boats from Bennington, StarCraft, Premier and Sun Tracker; and wakeboard and ski boats from Malibu, Moomba, Supra and Tahoe. Money leftover after the event will be donated to local non-profit groups. In the past, donations have been made to the St. Clair County Sheriff ’s Department, Logan Martin Lake Protection Association, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, Lakeside Hospice and Childersburg Youth Baseball. “We try to give back to the community when it’s over,” said Housh. Lakefest kicks off at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17.

Gayla Fairchilds is a fan of container gardening.

ontainer gardening can be a fun and attractive way to liven up your lake home. “You can literally use just about anything for container gardening,” said Gayla Fairchilds, with Hazelwood’s Greenhouses & Nursery in Pell City. “It doesn’t have to be a pot—you can use recycled tires to hold flowers, old shoes or boots, coffee pots, a kitchen colander and much more.” Fairchilds said container gardening is a passion. “I use three concepts for container gardening: thrill, fill and spill,” she said. “The thrill draws your eye to the container. The fill is anything you plant in the container. And the spill is anything that cascades or trails over the edges.” Fairchilds said glazed pottery makes a statement whether it has plants in it or not, and is great for growing plants in. “Color is everything,” she said. “It helps draw the eye to the

plant.” Fairchilds said some vegetable and flowers can be mixed, such as growing tomatoes and marigolds in the same container. “I personally don’t like to mix vegetables and flowers, although some exceptions do apply,” she said. “My Easter table centerpiece included tulips, daffodils and crocus with lettuce or Swiss chard to make a great combination.” Fairchilds said you can also do themed gardens. “If you want a salsa garden, you can plant tomato, peppers, onion and cilantro in a container, then decorate it to match your theme,” she said. “For an Italian herb garden, you can mix different types of basil with oregano, coriander, rosemary, and other herbs.” Fairchilds said a greenhouse professional can help with your plant choices, to get the maximum color and life out of the plants, as well as choose plants that work well together. “An important thing to remember is to pick containers to match the fully-grown plant,” she said. Fairchilds said she also does themed container gardens for
football season. “I mainly do Auburn and Alabama, but will do other team colors upon request,” she said. “I’ve done others, but my favorites to do are Auburn and Alabama.” Fairchilds said she also creates containers for weddings, funerals and other occasions. “Whatever the customer wants—I do my best to accommodate them,” she said. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System offers additional information on container gardening: • The container must have a bottom hole for adequate drainage. • The container must be large enough to hold the minimum amount of medium required for mature plants to grow. • The type of container used depends on the location and the plant selected. Decide whether the container needs to be attractive (in a high place of visibility). • Remember to coordinate container color with plant materials. Containers can be painted to create a different look or to create a cooler surface that will reflect heat. • Consider whether you may want to move the container to a different location later. If so, keep in mind the weight factor. Styrofoam peanuts can be used in the bottom of the container rather than filling it fully with potting mix. Also, the new fiberglass or Styrofoam planters are light-weight and decorative. • Porous containers such as terra cotta (clay) dry out more quickly and can wick water away from plants.
• Growing plants that require full sun should not be put in black containers. • Water-holding polymers or gels retain moisture for the more needy plants. • Watering time can be reduced by installing a drip irrigation system with an automated timer. • Containers can be placed on trays filled with gravel or marble pebbles covered in water, keeping them cool and providing moisture without creating a drainage problem. Change the water regularly to prevent mosquito problems. • Container-grown garden plants are more susceptible to freezing, requiring winter protection such as mulching, using wind screens, putting the container in the ground or moving the container to a protected area. • Some vining plants require staking and trellising, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and ornamental climbers. Anchor these containers to prevent them from blowing over. • Clean used containers before planting in them. A 10 percent bleach solution kills any pests and removes fertilizer salts. • Season porous containers before planting them by soaking them in water. Do not allow them to dry out. • Styrofoam peanuts in the container bottom reduces the weight. • Harden-off newly propagated plants by exposing them gradually to full sun and win. • Place containers on legs, bricks, coasters, or saucers to allow drainage and protect the surface underneath.

Terry Sandlin’s fabric designs are art in and of themselves.
If You Dream It, She Can Sew It Terry Sandlin makes it happen with fabric By EMILY ADAMS Photos by BOB CRISP
O
ne glance at her basement studio tells everything you need to know about what makes Terry Sandlin tick…or stitch, rather. Thick reams of fabric line the room, shelves upon shelves overflow with design books, fabric samples, cording, tacks and threads of every sort.

In spare places on the wall hang family portraits from years past, and at the center of the organized clutter sit four sewing machines and a work table strewn with pillows and cushions in various stages of completion. It is here, at her home on a secluded hillside in Cropwell, that Sandlin finds her happy place with Terry’s Designing
Sandlin loves creating just about anything for the home with fabric of all colors and textures.
Windows, a business she created to provide the sewingchallenged with custom window treatments and soft home furnishings. “This is my escape,” Sandlin said looking over her studio. “Sometimes I get down here, and I need to just let my brain go.” While most find dressing bare windows a daunting task, the self-professed “fabric nerd” sees it as her next creative challenge. Sewing for as far back as she can remember – she started on her grandmother’s lap and made tunics as Christmas presents for her sisters at age 7 – Sandlin has expanded her talents over the years from curtains to pillows
to just about everything you could possibly need. “I can sew anything that can be sewn for your home,” Sandlin said. “I am a workroom. I’m not an interior designer, but I can give you a good idea of what is going to look good, what are the best fabrics and linings for your job. I’m fairly creative with what I can come up with.” Sandlin has the design process down to a science, getting the most accomplished in the least amount of time so both she and the customer come out with a smile. When you call her, she will first explain the difference between custom furnishings and going to a store like Bed, Bath and Beyond in terms of the price and design options. who wanted to update her guest room, but didn’t want to put a whole lot of money into it,” she said. “She found a bed-in-a-bag set. It had a skimpy valance that went with it that was basically a triangle, and she handed it to me and said ‘Work your magic.’ She ended up not putting a lot of money into it, but still had an elegant room.” One of the stranger things Sandlin has been asked to design occurred just recently when a client requested a

The next step is determining the problem – what do you want? What do the furnishings need to accomplish in your home? Then she moves on to the basics like color schemes and style – do you like flowers or plaid? Do you hate polka dots? Are you modern or traditional? “I have a spiel that I go through so that by the time I pull some pictures and books for you and come to your house, I don’t waste your time or mine,” she said. Visiting the home is an all-important step to determine the type of light coming in the room (this factor can hugely impact fabric choice), the true character of the home, and to discuss your budget and potential designs. From there, Sandlin typically puts together two options, including fabric choices, from which you can choose or find your own, and once you agree on a project, you will have custom-created furnishings in four to six weeks. Sandlin gladly works with or without a designer and can go totally custom or use a combination of supplies. “For example, I had a lady I’ve done a lot of things for

cover for her bedside dog crate. “She wants a cover where she can flip it up at night to let the dog in, but during the day, she wants it to look like a table,” Sandlin said. “She’s going to put a lamp on it and all that, plus she said it’ll keep the dog warm at night. That’s probably the oddest thing I’ve been asked to do, but really it’s like making a table skirt, and I think it’s kind of cool.” Though the high quality of her work speaks for itself, it doesn’t hurt to mention Sandlin’s extensive experience, which she began seriously developing 21 years ago helping a fellow church member with her growing custom curtain business. Since those days of making more 80s-style ruffles than she cares to remember, Sandlin has vastly expanded her repertoire, staying upto-date on the latest tricks of the trade with webinars, conventions and her involvement in the Window Covering Association of America, of which she is secretary of the Birmingham chapter. Living near the lake offers Sandlin the opportunity to create more outdoor pieces, like seat, swing and boat cushions, and even something she deemed a “TV koozie,” meant to protect outdoor televisions from the elements. “I am really flexible, and I enjoy creating new things,” she said. “You just tell me your budget. Some people want to spend $500 and have an entire room done to one customer right now who is putting $1,500 on one window, so I like being challenged in different ways.” Sandlin just recently got her professional start when she and her husband, Mark, moved to Alabama 36

from their longtime home of Newnan, Ga. “I would always do a lot of things for my friends, but it wasn’t until we moved here that I got my business license for the first time in 2008,” she said. “My husband says he is glad someone else is paying for my hobby now.” Without any connections in the area, she said it was hard to break in, but

credits local designer Sheree Dey with helping get her foot in the door. “If you’ve got a good designer, it makes the workroom look really, really good,” she said. “And I’ve always known my best advertisement is word of mouth, one client being very satisfied with what I’ve done, so I’ve done a lot to try to network with people in the area.”

Outtdoor furniture coverings are also among Sandlin’s creations. She has provided many coverings for outdoor use on lakeside porches and patios.
“I just don’t remember not sewing. I’ve always loved it.” a When she’s not sewing, Sandlin enjoys gardening, caring for her chickens, dogs and horses, and keeping up with her three adult children who all reside in Georgia. But don’t think slowing down is in her plans – not even hand surgery has stopped Sandlin from threading the needle. “I’m about a month out from surgery now for degenerative arthritis, but I made sure it wouldn’t affect me beforehand,” she said. “I was having surgery on a Monday, and I knew cutting was going to be an issue, so I was in my workroom until midnight Sunday night cutting 38

things out so I could sew the next week in my brace. Tuesday, I came down to sew just to make sure I could.” From a start on her 12-year-old Singer sewing machine 20 years ago to her fully-stocked workroom today, Sandlin’s passion is obvious. “I was trying to think just the other day about how long I’ve been sewing,” she said. “I just don’t remember not sewing. I’ve always loved it.” Terry’s Designing Windows is reachable at 205-8149822 or tdwindows@hotmail.com. You can find her portfolio of work at www.TDWindows.com.

Art by the Water
A beachside painting from artist Tony Reddick.
Art Is Life for Tony Reddick The pursuit is enhancing, enriching, reflective By AZIZA JACKSON
A
rtist Tony Reddick’s life has been a mixed tapestry of faith, family and education, intermittently intertwined with art. His paintings serve as a reminder of how powerful art can be, both as a tool of motivation for others, and as a recording for the artist’s own trials and tribulations throughout life. Of his many passions, education and art have stood the test of time and given him a way to connect with his students on a personal level.

After spending about 26 years in the Gadsden City School System, Reddick believes his art still shows students that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, regardless of their backgrounds. Reddick himself is living proof. As one of nine children raised by a single mother in Roxbury, Mass., a small neighborhood in Boston, Reddick did not come from the most ideal of situations. “Having grown up in that environment I tell kids that I’m not supposed to be here because of my upbringing,” Reddick said.

Reddick is a man of many talents as an artist, educator, coach, principal and writer.
Reddick was one of only two of his mother’s children to go to college. After graduating from high school, Reddick went on to attend Boston University where he played football. Reddick was red-shirted his first year at the university when coaches found out about an injury he sustained after being hit by a car at the age of four. The injury left him blind in his right eye. “People ask ‘how do you paint and how do you play college sports blind in one eye?’” Reddick said. After facing a challenging first year at the university, Reddick said that he questioned whether or not he was on the right path. That is, until a friend who was attending Talladega College encouraged Reddick to enroll and come down to Talladega with him. Reddick was accepted into Talladega College on an academic scholarship and walked on the basketball team. The next day after arriving at the college, Reddick was walking across the campus from Crawford Hall to Shores Hall to finish registering. “And that’s when I met Mrs. Reddick and I said, ‘That’s my wife,’” he chuckled. “But she was spoken for, so I had to wait three-and-a-half years. We became the best of friends. We took several classes together,” he said. 42
Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - May 2013
After graduating from Talladega College in 1983 with his college sweetheart, Belinda, Reddick looked for work in Alabama with no success. Soon after, he went back to Boston to look for more opportunities. He said he got a canvas and paint, and planned to take his frustrations out on the canvas. After what seemed like a lifetime, Reddick landed a job as a basketball coach at his old high school. During that time he still kept in touch with Belinda with plans to marry her one day. Things started to look up for Reddick after he landed another job at an electronics company, and began to paint full time. He painted his first portrait of famed University of Alabama Coach Bear Bryant, a painting he said was very near and dear to his heart. But Belinda was even more near and dear. He sold the painting to the CEO of the electronics company to buy a plane ticket to come back to Alabama and marry her. “I bought the ring with the money from basketball coaching and wrapped it in a scarf and sent it to her for Christmas,” Reddick said. The couple were married in Belinda’s parents’ home in Gadsden. Rebecca and Belinda then moved to Boston where she worked

in assisted living for the handicapped and also worked part time at the electronics company. The Reddick family soon grew once their daughter Lindsay was born. The couple chose to move back to Gadsden to be closer to family. To date, the couple has been married for 29 years. His wife, Belinda, is currently a science teacher at Gadsden City High School, and teaches genetics, anatomy, and advanced placement biology. “All gifts come from God, all gifts come from a higher power,” Reddick said. “Art is just a gift. It manifests itself in many ways, whether it’s musical arts, visual arts, literary arts, painting, sculpting. It’s nothing concrete but can come through something concrete like painting.” The self-taught artist is a living testimony of how important a role art can play in the life of the artist, and the artist’s subject. One of Reddick’s well-known portraits is of Jerry “Boogey” McCain, a worldrenowned harmonica player from Gadsden who recently passed away. “I’m fascinated by music,” Reddick said. “That was a gift I was not blessed with.” Another vibrant portrait in his collection is of music legend Ray Charles performing live on the piano. Some of Reddick’s most beloved work comes from his series of paintings like 44
“Momma’s Little Joy” and “Potty Training” that depict toddlers getting into a little bit of trouble. “I love painting children in natural settings,” Reddick said. “I’m just really intrigued by the innocence of children especially when they’re doing something they’re not supposed to be doing.” “As a portrait artist, I try to capture the

person and their emotion,” Reddick said. “Whatever God gives me I just transfer it onto the canvas. “I have to attribute that to something or someone higher up than me.” One of Reddick’s most impressive collections includes several sportsthemed paintings, like an early painting of LSU basketball player Pete Maravich, and
Another of Reddick’s paintings most parents can relate to.
another of former University of Alabama basketball player and Coach Mark Gottfried. One painting in particular is called “Always There,” and depicts Michael Jordan’s father looking on as the star athlete advances through his basketball career. “Michael had always spoken of his dad being there in interviews,” Reddick said. “So I was inspired to paint this in 1994 when Michael’s dad died.” “As I was painting, I had children around me who were constantly asking, ‘What are you doing with this, what are you doing with that?’” Reddick said. “I liken it to an entertainer or an athlete. It just motivates me to do more. The more feedback I get from my audience, the more I’m motivated to complete a piece.” Another series titled “Greeks on the Beach,” stays true to the name and depicts members of black Greek-lettered organizations lounging on the beach in picturesque settings. “Let Freedom Reign” is another piece of Reddick’s that centers around the innocence of a child. In the painting, his son, Evan, is holding the American Flag as a child. “With the turmoil we’re going through at the time, children may not be aware but have no quips about raising the American flag,” Reddick said. “Sometimes it takes a child to remind us of the freedoms we have.” A lot of times, Reddick said, the inspiration behind a painting is something as simple as a request. “It really doesn’t take as long as one may think,” Reddick said. “I like to paint on the weekends and holidays. If you want it or need it, I can do it in a day.” Reddick said that most artists start with their background first, but he likes painting his images first. Reddick is currently writing and illustrating a children’s book titled “Trey’s Big Play,” inspired by a cousin of his. “When people talk about you being an artist, they think about painting, but writing is also an art,” Reddick said. “This is a project I very much look forward to completing.” And when Reddick can take time away from that project, he does motivational speaking, and mentoring

with young people. After retiring from education, he plans to travel, lecture and show his art. “I love being an educator,” Reddick said. “I think that there is so much to do as an educator.” During his time as principal of Litchfield High School in Gadsden, Reddick said that he was faced with learning experiences that he hopes to share with others interested in education. His book, “A Matter of Principal,” is a work in progress. “I’m concerned about the roles of 46
principals in schools and their leadership as far as molding and shaping these students,” Reddick said. Reddick said that he soon hopes to establish the Reddick Art Foundation where 25 percent of the sales from a piece of artwork inspired by a child will go to that child’s college fund. Reddick’s 26-year span as an educator in the Gadsden City School System began with a teaching position. While at Talladega College, he majored in mathematics with a minor in foreign language, and after returning to Gadsden with his new family, Reddick

started out as a French, art, math and later a Latin teacher in the Gadsden City School System. He spent the first three years teaching basic and consumer math and French 1 and French 2 classes, in addition to elementary art. Reddick went on to become an assistant principal and a basketball coach, while still working as an artist. “I’m still writing letters of recommendation,” Reddick chuckled. He has painted murals at schools across the Gadsden City School System, as well as the Gadsden Public Library, and local museums, in addition to illustrating the covers of Gadsden City High School Titans football program. Reddick is currently the English Language Coordinator for non-English speaking students, and a mentoring coordinator for the school system. He shows his work locally and has been a part of Talladega College’s Art Festival. He has also received various awards and acknowledgements, including the 2001 Best in Show prize at a local Gadsden museum. He delves into theater as well, performing in several plays in Atlanta. His life story is motivation itself for youth and adults, and Reddick said that he likes putting an artistic spin on it to reach his audience. “I think “Lord, what did you save me for?” Reddick said. His current project called “Faith, Favor, and Fulfillment,” is an embodiment of just that as the painting depicts a slave whose chains have been broken, and the transition from that freedom to rise of African-American moguls and businessmen today. “Art is such a motivation to youth and adults alike,” Reddick said. Reddick quoted the Latin saying “Ars longa, vita brevis,” meaning “Art is long, life is short.” “One of the qualities of art is that it outlives the artist,” Reddick said. “It is a gift. It is life.”

Moving With The Market Changes Cindi Woodall has options for buyers and sellers By MARK LEDBETTER
C
indi Woodall began her career selling real estate in 1991 and interest rates were 11 percent. “It took me about 90 days to make my first sale,” Woodall said, “I wondered what I had gotten myself into. I loved it then, and I love it now.” Today, keeping current and meeting client needs are two priorities for Woodall. Woodall has seen real estate change drastically in the past 22 years, especially with the development of the Internet and client accessibility to online listings. “It’s not enough to just put a sign in the yard and enter the listings in the MLS (multiple listing service),” Woodall said. Stating that so many buyers begin their search online, Woodall believes it is important for realtors to have a strong online presence. “We have to go further in our marketing now with feeds to as many web sites as possible, virtual tours, and QR (quick response) codes on all the marketing materials that link to those virtual tours,” Woodall wrote. “We have to be able to capture the leads that come in from these and follow up with them.” Woodall said Remax Hometown Properties not only provides these services, they also make sure their sellers are kept updated on all agent showings, virtual showings and market updates around their area. A new service she offers is providing clients facing foreclosure with another option – a short sale. A short sale occurs when lenders agree to accept a discounted payoff resulting in the lender releasing the lien that is secured to the property and receiving less money than is actually owed.

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - May 2013
Cindi Woodall In January, Woodall decided to become a Certified Distressed Property Expert, or an agent completing specialized training in short sales and foreclosure prevention. “I had handled several short sales and I felt that by earning this designation, I could better represent homeowners that were facing foreclosure and in some cases provide other options,” Woodall wrote. “So many times a person does not realize that they may qualify for a short sale, which is much better on your credit than a foreclosure,” Woodall added. Woodall stated that the housing market crash left millions of owners in danger of foreclosure. As one of two Pell City realtors specializing in short sales, Woodall is qualified to help home owners avoid foreclosure. Woodall moved to Pell City when she married her husband, Tommy, a Pell City resident, in 1983. The couple has two sons, Daniel and Michael. “Actually the boys were my reason for getting into real estate,” Woodall wrote. “I was working in Birmingham and wanted to find something that allowed me to be around when the boys started school.” Woodall used to take her boys with her when showing homes. “Even now, when I see some of my customers from back then, they still want to know how the boys are - what they’re doing now,” Woodall stated. Woodall’s listings can be viewed on her website, CindiWoodall.com, and she can be contacted by calling her at 205-966-5592.
