Leaving Lakeside

From the editor…

It’s tough saying goodbye. But that is the task before me as I prepare to leave The Daily Home and Lakeside Living Magazine. By the time you read this, I will have embarked on a new career, a new company I founded in the multimedia marketing field. As is usual with goodbyes, it’s a cause to reminisce. And this one is no different. We began this publication as a newsprint product back in the early 1990s, and it was wildly popular. Three years ago, we took it to the next level as a glossy, full-color magazine, and it exceeded all expectations. We’re proud of that. Back then, we called it “A new beginning.” And we were right. It was new, and we were beginning again. It was our chance to bring our readers and advertisers a magazine that told the stories of life on Logan Martin Lake in a compelling and thoughtful way. We’ve had plenty of fun telling those stories, and we have reaped many rewards listening to the positive feedback of our readers. They tell us that they can’t wait to receive Lakeside each month, and they tell us they read it from cover to cover. There is no higher compliment, and we appreciate the support and interaction we have had from our readers and advertisers. We dreamed long ago that we could create a publication that told the story of everyday life on the lake, a special feeling capturing the essence of life at water’s edge. It has been gratifying to serve as editor overseeing that dream, and I thank you for bringing us into your home each month. It is a special relationship we share, and I have cherished every moment of it. But, it’s time for another new beginning. It’s March. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be. — Carol Pappas, editor and publisher

Story and photos by David Atchison

Bobby McDaniels paddles down Choccolocco Creek.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experience as he travels down the Logan Martin Lake stretch of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. I’ve wanted to paddle Choccolocco Creek for some time now, and I was finally able to do so during my latest journey down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. The trip didn’t start out smoothly. It was 34 degrees when I left the house to pick up Bobby McDaniel, who joined me for the trip, and it was 34 degrees when I returned home later that day. I assured Bobby, who questioned me again and again about the cold weather, the sun was going to pop out in the afternoon and the mercury was going to reach 47 degrees – at least that is what the weathermen said. We never saw the sun, and I think it got colder, Continued Page 8

not warmer, during our trip. But we were dressed appropriately, and paddling helps keep you warm, despite a cold northwest breeze. The plan was to stop by Bobby’s so he could load his boat onto my wife’s truck. Laura has a long bed pick-up truck, which is great for transporting kayaks. Bobby was going to follow me in his truck to Poor House Branch Marina. We would drop off his truck and head out from there. Bobby would ride with me to Alabama 77 where it crosses over Choccolocco Creek. This is where we started our trip. But a funny – well not so funny – thing happened on the way to the lake. I really wasn’t paying that much attention as we loaded Bobby’s kayak into the back of the truck. I laid it down on top of my kayak, but when I did, Bobby gave it a good shove to move the kayak as far forward as possible. Well the kayak went forward all right. It slid right though the back window of Laura’s pick-up truck. There we stood, stunned, and it was the first time I have ever seen Bobby speechless – until the realization of the back window looking like a jigsaw puzzle ready to fall apart hit both of us. “Man, I’m sorry,” Bobby said over and over. “It was just as much my fault,” I told him. I really wasn’t paying much attention. It was just an accident, and accidents happen. There wasn’t much we could do about it at that point and besides, we were going paddling, with or without the truck’s back window. We went ahead and just knocked out the loose window and headed on our way. “I hope this is not an omen,” I told Bobby as we headed to the put-in. Continued on Page 10

When we arrived, there were two men fishing from the bank. They weren’t having much luck, they said. There was a sign near where the men were fishing, warning of a non-consumption fish advisory, and people should not eat any fish caught from Choccolocco Creek. Samples collected from the creek by state officials have recorded high levels of PCBs in the fatty tissues of fish caught there. According to the U.S. Environmental Management Agency, PCBs, polychlorinated biphenyls, are a probable human carcinogen and have caused cancer in laboratory animals. My advice: Heed the warning. Do not eat the fish caught from Choccolocco Creek, not until the advisory is lifted. It’s a shame the creek has this designation, but maybe it will prod people will become better stewards of the environment. I commend environmental groups who seek and demand stronger and better laws to protect the environment we all live in. Just one more thing, and this too is a shame – I noticed quite a bit of trash and plastic bottles along the banks of Choccolocco Creek, just downstream from Alabama 77. This is a good area for Logan Martin Lake Protection Association volunteers to hit on their next

cleanup. Choccolocco Creek is such a beautiful creek; it just needs a little tender loving care. People need to quit throwing or leaving their trash along the banks of the creek. This trash eventually will make its way into Logan Martin Lake next week, next month, or next year. Now it’s time for me to get off the soap box and talk about our paddling trip. It was a good seven-mile paddle. As we made our way down Choccolocco Creek, I heard a squirrel high on top of a bluff, warning his friends of our presence. I could never locate the squirrel, but I heard his loud barking. I could also hear the honking of a flock of geese in the distance, beyond the high mountain ridge which ran parallel to the creek. Eventually, the Canada geese flew across the mountaintops and were visible high in the sky. The geese flew over the water and then headed inland, probably looking for an open field to land. Much of the land along the upper part of Choccolocco Creek is not developed, and the banks of the creek appear to border either farm land or mountainous terrain. There are some old cabins that spot the sides of some mountains, overlooking the creek. During our trip, Bobby and I met two bass anglers from Springville fishing along the banks of Choccolocco

Creek. Kenny Pannell and Doug Logan were fishing in a tournament and had caught four fish, three largemouth bass and one spotted bass. Of course they were fishing in a catch-and-release tournament. One recommendation I need to make, if you decide you want to paddle Choccolocco Creek or any other creek that feeds into Logan Martin Lake – take a map. If we had not taken a map, we would have paddled about twice the distance we paddled that day. At the many twists and turns, it’s sometimes hard to determine which way is the main creek channel. You could paddle more than a mile before you realized you made the wrong turn. I checked the map frequently, knowing exactly where we were at all times. A compass is also good to have, but a good map is mandatory. I would think during an early, early morning paddle, you would probably see some deer and other critters along Choccolocco Creek. Something tells me Choccolocco Creek is prettiest during the spring and early fall. I plan to go back in the future and paddle the uppermost portion of the creek, between Anniston and Talladega. I just don’t know when. And by the way, Laura took the news of her broken truck window well. I have since replaced it. So until next time, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Linda Bassett loves to express her variety of talents in a wide range of artistic outlets.

ART BY THE WATER

From world-class cake decorator to 3-D artist Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Bob Crisp It is difficult to find a place on earth much farther away from Alabama than New Zealand located in the South Pacific Ocean southeast of Australia. But Linda Bassett and her husband, Tony, say the two regions are actually similar in terms of climate, precipitation, the verdant hills and large forests in EastCentral Alabama. So it is here in Pell City where the couple has settled down, and Bassett has dedicated herself to her distinctive arts and crafts work. Among her many talents is her ability to create a three-dimensional style of paintContinued on Page 14

ing. “I love texture. I love three-dimensional sort of things. Anything that has a feel and you can touch. It’s not going to hurt it if you walk up and touch it. Bassett is apt to use anything and everything to incorporate that texture and look into her paintings. “I like using different things. I’ve got one piece at the (Artscape) Gallery that I’ve got little rocks and shells in it. I collect things. If I’m out walking, I’m always picking up stuff, and I’ve got them all over the house. Other items such as pots and tiles go into another one of her paintings hung in her home. She uses a mix of marble, resin and acrylics to make her paintings seemingly rise from the canvas. Bassett said she is always cognizant of her surroundings and usually gets ideas while she is out in the world just looking around. “When you’re in a city or when you’re outside, you’re always looking at things for different ideas for design. You never stop looking, and it was just maybe some little

thing that I saw that triggers (an idea).” Much of her art is just putting her own imaginative outlook into everyday scenes. “I can copy from a photo. I can copy things perfectly, but I could just take a photo if I wanted to. This is different. It’s me.” She might get her interest in 3-D style art from her previous profession when she made works of art from sugar and flour as a worldclass cake decorator. Worldclass is no overstatement in Bassett’s case. She worked in the Bellagio Hotel and Casino for several years and made cakes for celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Mel Gibson, Will Smith, Paris Hilton and many, many others. “That’s really sort of how Continued on Page 16

this art began. It’s similar to what I was doing on my cakes.” Often the cakes needed to be some kind of unique and interesting design, which forced Bassett to dip into her creative reservoir often. She still has pictures of many of the cakes and the designs range from helicopters, to rubber ducks to ladies in hoop dresses. She can draw on that experience for much of her current art pieces. She also has a knack for artwork in the two-dimensional world. Her pencil sketches and drawing are also top-notch. “When I was little, I think I drove my mother nuts. Any piece of paper I used to draw on. I remember I would spend hours drawing houses, which may be strange, but I used to love drawing houses. And like most girls, you draw ladies with dresses on and things like that to try to make things pretty that you don’t have.” She mostly draws with pencil, mastering the skill growing up because she did not have much of anything else with which to create a painting or drawing besides pencils. On top of all these skills,

Linda Bassett’s artistic skills translate into amazing and distinctive cake designs.

she also dabbles with making shoes and clothing as well as small animal figurines for interesting little tic-tac-toe boards. Her art pieces can be seen at the Artscape Gallery on Cogswell Avenue in Pell City, as well as online at sadabe.redbubble.com. Her happiness and satisfaction in art is found when she is finally able to step back and look at a finished piece she created. “It’s actually having something that wasn’t there before. I think that again came from the cakes. When you actually finished it, I got more joy from the bride walking in and actually seeing it for the first time. You put your heart and soul into some of these things. You spend hours on them, and it’s the same with this.” She added, “You can step back and say ‘Wow, this didn’t exist before.’ I’ve created this and it now exists.” Linda Bassett likes to incorporate different materials into her works.

Great places for great food More restaurants calling Logan Martin area home Aunt Aggie’s Back Porch owner Marsha Jones picks up a plate of freshly prepared food to deliver to one of her hungry customers in the dining area.

Story by Meredith McCay Photos by Brian Schoenhals Two new restaurants have opened in the Pell City area in the past six months, but they won’t seem new to patrons familiar with the area. At Aunt Aggie’s Back Porch, hungry visitors will probably remember Linda’s and the Country Scoop next door when they walk into the building, but will soon realize the new owner has made herself at home and invites her guests to enjoy her home cooked food. At Fat Man’s Barbecue, the restaurant has only been in its new building since last October, but everyone in Cropwell who has eaten there probably knows the current owner is a third-generation barbecue man with a respect for what his grandfather and father built before him.

18

Both owners got started at a young age and love cooking foods their customers will find familiar and delicious. Let’s learn more about these two restaurants and their owners, shall we?

Aunt Aggie’s Back Porch

Marsha Jones was in the right place at the right time to take ownership of Aunt Aggie’s Back Porch last August. Jones, who is originally from Birmingham, had previously had restaurants in Florence and Montgomery, but had no connections to the Pell City area when she stopped into Linda’s for lunch one day. The previous owner told her she was interested in getting out of the restaurant business

and had heard that Jones was the person to talk to if she did. “I suppose I got interested in cooking when I was hanging around my grandmother’s kitchen,” Jones said. “When I was old enough to sit on a stool next to the cake mixer and stick my finger in the bowl, I was learning about cooking. I guess I’ve always been a good cook. But I have no professional training. I just make food like you would at home and cook from my heart.” Jones and her staff of about 10 are busy keeping up with the lunch crowd that comes in six days a week, and the breakfast crowd that comes in every Saturday. She said she used to serve breakfast every day, but they had to stop because they didn’t have enough

20

customers to make it profitable. The lunch menu consists of hamburgers, Reubens, rib-eye steak sandwiches, chicken tenders and a daily blue plate special. Jones said the special is different every day, but usually includes two or three meat choices, nine or 10 vegetable choices and two dessert choices. “I shop the meat selections and the vegetable selections and see what sounds good,” Jones said. “It’s a lot like when you are planning your meals at home for dinner, picking what goes with what.” The Saturday breakfast menu includes flapjacks served hot off the griddle with such side choices as eggs made to order, sausage, bacon, country ham, Aunt Aggie’s sugar cured ham, grits, biscuits, toast and blueberries. A steak and eggs breakfast is also

available. The inspiration for the name of the restaurant came from her maternal grandmother, Agnes. Jones said a few relatives started calling her Aunt Aggie, and it stuck. Even her grandfather started referring to his wife as Aunt Aggie. “Since she was an early influence for me, I thought this would be a fitting tribute for her,” Jones said. “I want to get more of my grandmother’s things to put in here, including progressive pictures of her throughout her life.” There is also an extra room in the restaurant that used to be an ice cream parlor. Jones has already moved her refrigeration, freezers and dishwashing equipment to that room and plans to partition it off. That way she can seat up to 30 additional diners in that room when there is overflow or a private event. Her main dining room currently seats about 60 people. The additional room is still not quite the way she wants it to look, but Jones is continuing to make plans for improvements to the restaurant and expansion of her hours. She said she is getting ready to stay open for lunch on Saturdays with an expanded sandwich menu and appetizers. She also plans to start opening for din-

pride in keeping the menu at Fat Man’s Barbecue similar to the one his grandfather created in 1969. Davis opened the newest location of the restaurant on U.S. Highway 231 in Cropwell in October of 2009, and said having a building with air conditioning has really helped business. The previous location had been a true barbecue shack with a screened-in porch serving as the dining area. While heaters and fans were placed throughout the space in winter and summer respectively to fight the effects of weather, Davis said people would still freeze or get too hot in the building the family had been using since 1994. His father, Larry, moved the restaurant out of the building his grandfather had chosen in 1969 and

bought a new building in 1974. Unfortunately, that building burnt down, causing the family to need the smaller building in 1994. “I am now in my third year of owning the restaurant, coming up on my fourth year.” Davis said. “And I had always wanted to rebuild. I have kept my granddad’s recipes and I keep everything the same as the original.” The family was originally from Leeds, but had always had a lake place in Rabbit Branch. So in the 1960s, Davis’ grandfather decided to open a barbecue restaurant near his lake home and needed a catchy name for it. Long before he became the owner of a restaurant, Davis’ grandfather had gotten the nickname of “Fat Man” because he was a big guy, so he decided to name his restaurant after his well-known nickname.

Aunt Aggie’s Back Porch owner Marsha Jones, left, is shown in a photograph with her grandmother, known as Aunt Aggie, at her 90th birthday party. She credits her grandmother with inspiring her to cook. Through the years, the business has stayed in the family with various members working in the restaurant. Since Davis opened the new building, he said he has hired additional workers to help out, but it is still a family affair at Fat Man’s Barbecue. “I always wanted to get into the family business,” Davis said. “I’ve worked here since before I was legal age. I could barely see over the counter when I started, I’ve worked here that long.” Besides offering all kinds of barbecue from pork, beef and chicken to pork ribs, Davis said the restaurant also offers hamburgers, hot dogs, catfish and chicken fingers for those who might not be in the mood for barbecue but enjoy the restaurant’s atmosphere. Davis has also added a few new vegetable side items and hot wings to the menu. He said he might add other items to the menu in the future, but he hasn’t gotten around to making any other additions yet. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday, opening at 10 a.m. most days and 11 a.m. on Sundays, and staying open until 8 p.m. “This is a family-owned and operated restaurant with a nice family environment,” Davis said. “We offer a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I stress with the girls who work up front that we put the customer first.”

Art and lake make waterfront living rich for family

Their first acquaintance with Logan Martin Lake was made on the Talladega side of the waterway. And Doug and Janice Entler liked the life so well, they chose another spot on Logan Martin when they decided it was time for another house. This time, the Entlers found their lakefront spot on Logan Martin in the Pell City area, in the River Oaks development off U.S. 231 South. Continued on Page 30

Theirs is a getaway perched on the end of a point, with a threesided view of the water and its offerings. The Entler home is situated on a rise overlooking a broad offspring from the lake’s main channel. Looking off to the left, there’s the busy traffic of U.S. 231 in the distance, and straight across, the Pell City Civic Center and Lakeside Landing. There’s much to enjoy from the location, larger boats and water oriented activities are in full swing much of the year. And during the quieter months, the array of wildlife that visit creates its own allure. That’s one of the great things about living on the water, there’s always something to watch and enjoy, Mrs. Entler said. Continued on Page 32

To the left of the foyer a large formal dining room faces the front of the house, and there’s seating for 10 at the oval dining table. Upholstered chairs are in a mission style. A massive china cabinet holds many of Entler’s favorite pieces of pottery. A professional artist herself, she has a penchant for collecting as well as creating. Curved glass panels on the cabinet are duplicated with elegantly curved doors on the lower storage areas. In a smaller cabinet, Entler has placed some of her own early pieces of pottery, joking that one of her first attempts at making a coffee mug resulted in a piece “just too heavy to use.” That’s part of the art of making pottery, she said, learning to finesse the clay into thinner pieces. Evidence of some of Entler’s more recent pursuits are waiting in the dining room, swatches of basket-making materials await her touch, among some of her finished work, a variety of “baskets within baskets” and other pieces Continued on Page 38

in progress, many inspired by instructor Marilyn Huey of St. Clair County. “Hers are so perfect, and you can see that mine look a little crooked,” Entler says, critiquing her own work. The mantle over the living room fireplace holds more of Entler’s finds, and a favorite “first pot” adorns the mantle as well. It’s a piece she found at the Kentuck Arts Festival years ago, noting she only paid $28 for the large piece. Another favorite piece of art hangs beside the glass doors in the living room, a piece called a “metal quilt,”

38

made using pieces of raku fired squares and assembled into a wall hanging. “When I travel, I tend to collect art, too,” Entler said. There’s a painting done on silk Entler found in New Orleans that hangs in the foyer, and a large batik piece featuring a turtle motif that hangs over the couch in the living room. There is an assortment of pottery arranged on the mantle, and Entler laughs about her fondness for collecting pots. One of the features she likes best about the home’s design is there are two

complete master bedroom suites, along with their own spacious baths on the main level. Kristin’s bedroom is located on the main level as well, decorated with fun shades of lilac and pink and coordinating glass beaded links on the windows. From the foyer, stairs lead down to a large multi-purpose room, one that’s been a handy spot for Entler’s art projects. Windows stretch across the back wall with its lake view. Adjoining this room is Entler’s designated place for making pottery, a studio complete with kiln and shelving for storing her supplies of glazes and equipment. She collects bits of this and that to create designs on her pottery, sometimes leaves or other bits of foliage along with unexpected things such as fabric and even the soles from shoes that can become a creative imprint on clay. There’s a three-car garage joining the main level, offering even more space for storing art work in progress and supplies. The grounds surrounding the Entler’s home have mature trees, along with a supply of maples Entler added herself after moving in. There’s one aspect of the house and its location Entler said that really sold them on their spot on Logan Martin. “We bought it for the sunset,” she said, pointing to the expanse of sky and water visible from the back of the property. “It’s fabulous.”

At last year’s cook-off, the Deer Sisters served “Bambi Gone Bad,” a deer chili with beer and wine. This year, they decided on Wisconsin Black Bear Hiney Stew, with a stuffed black bear standing table-high right beside them. “This is our second year competing as Deer Sisters and our fourth year competing in wild game cook-offs,” said team member Debbie Ponder of Munford. Ponder’s cooking partner, Pam Mills of Talladega, said they took a hind quarter of a black bear (not from the stuffed bear standing next to the table), and used both smoked and sautéed bear with mushrooms, onions, peppers, corn, black beans, and other ingredients. “It seems pretty popular this year,” she said. And it was. The Deer Sisters won both first place in the Game category and Best Overall for their Wisconsin Black Bear Hiney Stew. They also won second place for Best Presentation. model. The other five sold for $495,000 each. The townhomes have four bedrooms and four bathrooms and about 3,000 square feet. All come with ceramic tile, granite countertops, washer and dryer and stainless appliances, including refrigerator, microwave and stove. Each apartment has two balconies overlooking the lake, and the back wall is all glass with a railing, to provide not only a stunning view of the lake but also, “if you’re tall enough, a view of the Talladega National Forest, too,” Robinson said. Each townhome also has a large single-car garage and an elevator. The development also includes some 414 condominiums of up to 1,600 square feet. The condos come in a variety of sizes and layouts, including one, two and three bedroom models. There will also be 55 condo units reserved for residents over 65, with enclosed foyers and sunrooms, as well as a “keeping room” or common area to gather for card games and other activities. Of course, all of the condominium units are in compliance with all aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act. “All of those condos are also lakefront. We want to encourage people whose parents want to retire to the lake to come someplace where they can be close by,” Robinson said. Other amenities will include boat slips, a children’s play area, five or six grills, a business center, including a mortgage company and a model home, and a convenience store all within one tenth of a mile. There will be a total of five pools, including an Infinity pool, which recently opened, and tennis courts. There will also be a 30,000 square foot club house which will accommodate 450, and a wedding chapel seating more than 220 people. There is a recreation room underneath the chapel, and both buildings should be ready by fall, Robinson said. “Drew Henson, who runs the Cypress Inn in

52

Tuscaloosa, will be catering the weddings and other events,” Robinson said. “We’re hoping to have everything up and running in time for December.” The clubhouse will have a full-time chef preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a bar. “It’s a heck of an investment,” Robinson said. The clubhouse and chapel are both owned by the tenants, who pay a $150 per month maintenance fee that also covers landscaping, pool maintenance and other shared costs. “But for the $150 per month, you’re looking at a potential revenue stream of millions. You could have up to 200 weddings per year, with an average of 150 to 200 people at each one. Many guests will probably be coming from out of town and looking for a place to stay, which is good for those who are renting out their properties. Our market is probably about a 200mile radius, so we’re looking at drawing people from Nashville, Huntsville, Birmingham, Atlanta and maybe even further out.”
