From the editor…

M

ay is sublime on Logan Martin Lake. We’ll likely see the first of the really hot weather, a preview of the summer days to come, but for the most part, May will bring the kind of clear, sunny days that we consider mild. The days will be perfect for a slow cruise on a pontoon boat, a thrilling trip across the water on skis or just a lakeside picnic with family and friends. With kids still in school, the lake will remain mostly the domain of the grownups on weekdays, quiet enough for fishing, canoeing, reading, napping. The decibel level will pick up considerably on weekends, though, as children and teenagers take to the water in force. May is when the water warms up enough for comfortable swimming, when the spray from personal watercraft is cool and welcome, when ziplines and tires suspended from ropes swing back into action over the lake. May is when ringing laughter and boat motors join birdsong and the frogs’ chorus as background music to lakeside activities. It’s when boat owners get to try out their latest high-tech gadgets. It’s when the new goats on Goat Island, as yet unnamed, will grow accustomed to their new surroundings. It’s when the organizers of the annual Pell City Block Party will put the finishing touches on their plans for the event that will draw thousands to the city’s historic downtown the first Friday in June. You’ll find all this and more in this month’s edition of Lakeside. May is Lakeside living at its finest.

A Day at the Park

Pell City’s Lakeside Park is a scenic stop on the River Trail Story and photos by DAVID ATCHISON

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

I

would consider this lakefront property one of the choice spots on Logan Martin Lake, and there’s no way I could paddle down the Alabama Scenic River Trail without stopping and talking about Pell City’s Lakeside Park. The 65-acre park is the crown jewel of Pell City. It provides an abundance of recreational opportunities for everyone and offers outstanding public access to Logan Martin Lake. “It’s one of the best things we did for the city,” said former Pell City Mayor Lawrence Fields. “We’re fortunate and blessed to have that park, because it means so much to the people.” Well said. I have visited the park frequently, even in the middle of the day during the middle of the week, and there’s always someone enjoying what the park has to offer. Lakeside Park is a great place to launch your kayak for a short afternoon paddle or extended trip. It also provides a convenient place for fishermen to launch their boats for fishing trips, too. The park has two boat ramps and a huge parking area, making it ideal for large bass tournaments. The park was used extensively when BassMaster Classic and FLW tournaments were held on Logan Martin Lake. Other large fishing tournaments are also launched from Lakeside Park. But to me, the park really provides great public access to local residents, people like me who do not own property along the lake but who enjoy getting out on the water. Some people swim between the two long fishing piers near the boat ramps at the park. There are always people fishing from the piers and the long wooden bridge that joins Lakeside Park and the Pell City Sports Complex, which is across the slough from the park. I know the 1.2-mile walking track, which circles the park, quite well. I walk the trail several times a week, generally making the hike twice before I call it quits. While walking on the trail, it’s common to see wildlife such as like ducks, squirrels, chipmunks and geese. May 2011 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

Sunsets at Lakeside Park in Pell City are always gorgeous. A mallard duck swims across the water as the sun slowly disappears from the sky.

On one cloudy day when I was walking along the track, I looked up, and across the parking lot near the boat launch was a juvenile bald eagle perched high in a tree. The bird was scanning the lake, probably looking for an afternoon snack. Another day, I was pleasantly surprised when I glanced up into a wooded area and spotted a beautiful owl sitting on a limb next to the cement walkway. Oh, I wish I’d had my camera then. It was close to the walking trail and wasn’t spooked when it

opened those big round eyes and stared back at me as I walked by. Lakeside Park has three pavilions, one for really large gatherings and two others built by the Pell City Kiwanis Club. The park also features the Kids Kastle, a 21,000-square-foot community-built playground. “It’s amazing the things that have been put in there,” said Pell City Councilman James McGowan. “The park has come a

very long way, but we still have a ways to go… I still don’t think the park has reached its potential.” Officials point to Rod Goode as one individual who was instrumental in helping develop Lakeside Park. Goode worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, now the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, when the park first opened. He was instrumental in helping secure a federal grant through Coosa Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council. “It was a 50 percent match,” he said. Goode said it was a joint effort by the city and county to develop Lakeside Park. Fields said the property just sat there for many years before it was developed into a public park. Goode said the process to secure funds for developing the park took time, and the venture was carried over from one city administration to another. He said to secure the grant, the venture had to be a water-based project, and since Lakeside Park borders Logan Martin Lake, there was an opportunity to secure federal

dollars for the development of the park. “It turned out to be a very good project,” Goode said. He said it’s been awhile since the park opened, but he believed it was first opened in the early to mid ’80s. Goode said he could not remember who was mayor at the time the park opened, but the project started with one administration and was completed with another administration in office. He said a project plan had to be developed and a contractor was hired to design the park. Bids had to be solicited and accepted before the work could even start. “It was a two- to three-year process,” Goode said. Initially, the park had only the road leading in, a boat launch, one pavilion and restroom, a nature trail and a floating pier. Goode said there were plans for another restroom, and the plan even included a boardwalk for the marshland area in the park, but there was not enough money to complete all the work. Today, there are efforts to build that boardwalk in the marshland area of the park. The Logan Martin Lake

Protection Association is teaming up with the city to fund the project and finish what was planned more than 20 years ago. To me, that’s neat, and I believe that the wetlands do need to be preserved for the local waterfowl and wildlife — and for visitors to see. The wetlands project will also be used as an educational tool for local students. With a kayak, one can paddle in sections of the marshland that are inaccessible to larger boats, so that’s one more advantage of a small vessel. But with the boardwalk, wetland areas once not accessible to the public will be available to people on foot. That’s a good thing. I always enjoy my visits to Lakeside Park and look forward to my next paddling trip on Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. Until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Every Surface a Canvas Lakeside artist Edward Jennings will draw or paint on anything that’s flat and on some things that aren’t. By AZIZA JACKSON

E

dward Jennings is a jack of all trades and master of each one. In fact, his home is a perfect combination of furniture, knickknacks, brightly colored paintings that adorn the walls, and pencil and ink sketches on napkins, paper towels and envelopes scattered on every surface. “This is what I do. It’s like eating. You don’t stop eating,” Jennings said. “Any and everything I get my hands on, I draw, and I keep drawings and drawing materials around.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a napkin. I just draw. I don’t think about it.” Art has always tagged along throughout Jennings’ life, whether he was sketching in his off time while working as a taxi driver in New York or drawing on cargo when he worked at the docks. The Harlem native has been a member of ArtScapes for about six years. Over those years, he has taught several classes, including one in which a floor cloth is painted with either latex or acrylic paints. He has taught art in every kind of capacity, whether at ArtScapes or in the Anniston City School System, at colleges and universities including Talladega College, Alabama State University and Central Alabama Community College, or to a group of inmates at Talladega’s Federal Correction Institution. “That was really funny,” Jennings said about his time teaching at the federal prison. “You have to keep from laughing but be serious. You have to have a sense of humor and don’t go in there with any preconceived ideas.” He attributes his creative curiosity and thirst for artistic adventure to his childhood in Harlem, where playtime served as a creative outlet. Jennings said there were no yards, fields or parks nearby to play in, so he Edward Jennings stands in what he calls “the multipurpose room,” filled with his artwork and several projects he is currently working on.

and his childhood friends used their creativity to turn a cardboard box into a house or fort and a pair of skates and a two-by-four into a skateboard. “We were pre-skateboard,” Jennings chuckled. “I used to take broken lamps and chalk and draw with it in the street.” Jennings said that from his room in his family’s fifthstory apartment he could look down and see his creation on the pavement below. “The worst thing you could tell me is I couldn’t go outside,” Jennings said. Whether on canvas, glass or whatever other surface he can find, Jennings creates art in whatever format he can. “I do what’s convenient,” Jennings said. “If I’m in a restaurant, I use my pen.” His portfolio represents his diverse experience with everything from printmaking and silk screen to airbrush and colored pencils and painting with acrylic, watercolor and pastels, just to name a few. Jennings received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Pratt Institute School of Art and Design in

Brooklyn and also attended the School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He eventually came to Alabama and taught art at Talladega College for 18 years. He instructed art students how to hand-build clay and use a potter’s wheel. From 1977 to 1996, he owned The Peddler, a T-shirt shop on Battle Street in Talladega. “One of my dreams is to open up an art school here in Talladega,” Jennings said. “I can start with a storefront.” In the meantime, Jennings continues to do what he loves most on canvases and napkins, all while learning about new art mediums. “I have two degrees, but I can still learn something. Learning is constant,” Jennings said. “What I’m currently working on is Photoshop to restore old photographs and portraits.” For Jennings, art and creativity cannot be turned on and off like a faucet. “I’d rather paint and draw than anything else,” he said. “It’s a part of my life and when I stop, I stop breathing.”

hree new faces will greet visitors on Goat Island. “We have three new female goats residing on Goat Island,” said St. Clair County District Court Judge Phil Seay. Goat Island, in the Pine Harbor community, is about 100 yards from Seay’s house. Seay said the three male goats who had lived on Goat Island have retired to a pasture on the mainland. “Big Bob, Billy and Joe were too big for the island and too

big for us to rescue and transport if the island floods,” he said. “Big Bob weighed in at about 130 pounds, and the other two goats were about 120 pounds each.” Seay said the three new female goats are much smaller, probably in the 30-50 pound range. “It’s a mom and two babies,” he said. The three new goats were donated by Amanda Maddox and her daughters, Shelby, 14, and Callie, 10. Maddox is legal assistant to Dwight Blair, one of the men who helps rescue the goats when the island floods. “They are very friendly goats,” she said. “The biggest black goat is the mom. The white goat is the older kid, and the blackand-white baby was born last October. I’m not sure the age of the other two.” Maddox said the goats have a taste for some of the same treats human kids eat. “They love Cheez-Its, and will eat them out of your hand,” she said.

Name that goat

?

The three new residents of Goat Island have a problem: They do not have names. Their nameless condition is a temporary affliction, however, and Lakeside readers get the privilege of naming them. If you would like to offer names for the goats, email your suggestions to news@dailyhome.com. Specify names for Goat 1, the mother; Goat 2, the older, white kid; and Goat 3, the younger, blackand-white kid. We will print the publishable suggestions in the June edition of Lakeside, and then readers can email their votes for their favorite names June 1-15. The final names for the goats will be announced in the July edition of Lakeside, along with a picture of the readers who came up with the winning names.

Tech Toys

Technology lovers are not confined to the land. On the water, bells and whistles have been replaced by GPS and USB ports for MP3 players. If the Starlounger looks like a floating refrigerator, it also holds all the same comforts and more.

T

he summer heat always seems to arrive before the summer season on Logan Martin Lake. When the thermometer reaches 90, an armada of pontoon, ski and fishing boats hits the water. Locals mingle with out-of-towners to take part in the enjoyment of the water. Whether your idea of fun involves some friends, some family, some sport or all of the above, local marinas offer boats and boat accessories to match nearly any need. Jerry Woods, owner of Woods Surfside Marina in Cropwell, showed off some of the newest boats with the latest in technology. The 2011 Starcruiser brand’s “Starlounger” is a 25-anda-half-foot pontoon built around comfort and convenience. It featured a 200 horsepower Mercury ProXS engine. “They’re very unique boats,” Woods said. It has “rubteak” rubber flooring on the front and back ends to cut down on mold and mildew. Along with large storage spaces, it has GPS, a USB port for mp3 players, built-in speakers and underwater LED lights in the front and back. 24

Story and photos by MATT QUILLEN “This is a nice feature on these for 2011 too. In the oldstyle boats, your passengers sat way over from you or behind you. What they have done with this, they added a short cushion, so (the driver and a passenger) can sit side by side and talk.” But Woods said the back of the boat is where you really find the “lounge” in Starlounger. “It is really a comfortable boat; it is hard to beat,” he said. “The difference is the high backs on the seats this time. So if you’re not lounging, you have room for two or three people on each side.” Inside the marina, Woods offers gear not only for children and adults, but for canines too. Right next to Woods’ dog Yogi you can find a variety of toys, leashes and lifejackets in sizes from Pomeranian to Great Pyrenese. Boats range from $17,000 to $50,000 at Woods Surfside Marina. After you’ve picked out the one you like, you can find plenty of accessories for it in Riverside. “Our businesses complement each other,” Alan Battle said. “I send people down there and he sends people up here.”

Jerry Woods, owner of Woods Surfside Marina, enjoys demonstrating the comforts of the Starlounger.

Water toys at Alan Battle’s Riverside Marina include boating accessories, fishing tackle, inner tubes, wakeboards and kneeboards.

You can’t walk into Alan Battle’s Riverside Marina without nearly tripping on a brightly colored water toy of some kind. Battle’s shop offers boating accessories, fishing tackle, inner tubes, wakeboards, kneeboards, lifejackets and just about anything else you’ll need to have fun on the water. Battle, who has operated the business for 15 years, said the “water toys” are always a big hit around this time of year. “People get them, they go out on their boats and they drag the kids behind it,” he said. “Even the adults like to ride on the water toys.” Battle said he carries as wide a variety of items as any store

Anglers who plan to go after “the big one” might decide to take along this 3-foot lure from Riverside Marina.

in the area. His new “Wow” line of products is expected to be in sometime this month. Inflatable tubes and rafts are offered in several sizes, seating from one to four people. Battle said the wakeboards, kneeboards and water skis are also popular items. The over-ambitious fisherman can also add a three-foot fishing lure to his order while picking out accessories. “Those are real lures,” Battle said. Vision, determination and volunteer labor resurrected Pine Harbor Golf Course.

Pine Harbor member Billy Bearden enjoys a sunny afternoon on the course.

I

n 1984, Pine Harbor Golf Course was closed and bankrupt. The hotel and restaurant that once stood in the community was torn down. A group made up of Bob Spivey, his wife Chris Spivey, Marlon Huggins and Ned Payne made an offer to buy the land, but it was bought by Dr. Larry Lemak. Shortly thereafter, a group led by Spivey began talking to Lemak about leasing the property. Spivey and others signed the lease on the land in September 1984. Soon after the lease was signed, people in the Pine Harbor community pitched in to get the course up and running again. They went with their own tractors. They mowed the grass. The ladies pulled weeds. “I believe everybody in the community pitched in to help,” said Spivey, one of the original founders of the Pine Harbor Golf Course. 26

The course reopened in late September after being closed for less than a year. “It is important to Pell City for this course to remain open,” said Spivey. He says that Pine Harbor is the only 18-hole course in the area. The other closest 18-hole courses are in Sylacauga and Anniston, says Spivey. Spivey said that the course was once played by legendary University of Alabama head football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant during an amateur invitational tournament. He said PGA Champions Tour golfer Ray Floyd has also played the course. Kim Wilcox, once the club pro at Pine Harbor, is now the head coach of women’s golf at UAB. Wilcox’s son, Will, is a professional golfer and has won Hooters and Canadian Tour events.

The Ray Cox Memorial tournament is the biggest event held at the course each year. Sponsored by the Pell City Rotary Club, the tournament sees anywhere from 100 to 150 golfers participating. The annual tournament to honor the late Ray Cox, founder of Metro Bank, is held the first weekend in May every year. Marcia Garrett, a member of the Pine Harbor Board of Directors, organizes the annual Chris Spivey Memorial tournament each year. The annual event recognizes the former manager of the club who also is the late wife of Bob Spivey. The tournament attracts top golfers from Birmingham, Anniston and beyond and is limited to 44 contestants. “We’ve had the maximum for the past five or six years, at least,” Garrett said. Pine Harbor is also home to the Pell City High School and Victory Christian golf teams. Pell City’s golf team practices at the course and plays half of their home tournaments at the course. Victory Christian also practices at Pine Harbor, and they play all of their home tournaments there. Pine Harbor secretary Roy Dye said the club is in the process of refurbishing the tennis courts. He said May 1 was the goal for the project’s completion. Pine Harbor Golf Course is a private club. Nonmembers may play only with a member. Prospective members can play a round for free. Members are allowed to have their own carts at the course. They may keep them in a covered area at the course or at their homes. Garrett says that it is rare that a course allows members to do that. The hours at Pine Harbor are 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Mondays and 8 a.m.-8 p.m.Tuesday-Sunday. A senior men’s group plays Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, while the ladies’ group tees off each Tuesday at 9 a.m. Nine-hole couples scrambles take place each Sunday at Pine Harbor followed by a catered meal. Fore more information on membership and tournaments, call Pine Harbor Golf Course at 205-338-4354.

When life turns golden... Always There Provides the Silver Lining. At 93-years old, Herman Libbe’s life is golden. “Being able to remain in his home is very important to him,” says Herman’s daughter Penny Patterson. “Always There In-Home Care makes that possible. He dearly loves his caregiver, Amelia.” For over a year, Always There’s Amelia Gibson has nurtured a special relationship with Mr. Libbe that transcends helping maintain his home and preparing his meals. They have become friends. In fact, when the dapper Mr. Libbe takes his two walks per day, he carries his cane in one hand and Amelia on the other. Penny says, “We can’t imagine having anyone else care for him.” Like many adult children of aging parents, Penny has a busy personal life, which presents challenges in her ability to offer constant attention to her father. Always There offers Penny a solution - call it a silver lining - to that cloudy issue. My father is not always easy to deal with. I tried other companies in the area, and Always There has been by far the best. In particular their Care Management services have been a huge help with planning and decision-making. I couldn’t be more pleased with their dependability and service.” For more information about Always There, call 205-824-0224, or visit our website at www.alwaysthereinc.com for a free online assessment of your needs.

Before you hire an in-home care company, be sure to ask: Who is responsible for payroll taxes, Social Security, and liability insurance on the worker? Who sends a replacement when my regular caregiver calls off sick? Is the company insured, licensed, and bonded? Are caregivers employees of the company or merely independent contractors? 931 Martin St. South, Pell City AL. (In the K-Mart Shopping Center)

Lakeside Living in Style

Cindy Penannen has filled her Italian-style home with favorite antiques, classic colors and a touch of island whimsy.

30

C

indy Pennanen found her calling at an early age, and it shows. When she was just a little girl growing up in Michigan, while her girlfriends and sisters watched cartoons on Saturday mornings, Pennanen would busy herself rearranging furniture and decorating. She liked making things pretty. And she still does. Just take a look at her Pine Harbor home on Lake Logan Martin. It’s hard to pick a place to start, but the grounds and setting beckon attention upon arrival. The home sits on the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, a deep lot with ample room for a woman who loves landscaping and working in her yard. Pennanen’s outdoor talents become clear with the plots of blooming azaleas in shades of coral, white and lavender positioned against old-growth oaks and fluffy Japanese maples.

The house Cindy Pennanen found on Logan Martin Lake is in the Pine Harbor area of Pell City. She saw it advertised in a magazine and set out to find it.

Dogwoods dot the landscape, showing off their blooms among spiral-trimmed conifers planted along the front of the house. Spots of bright yellow pansies dot the edges of the beds around the house, and ceramic planters are filled with the same. Decorative white fencing travels from the side of the house to the back, and a circular drive brings visitors to the main entrance. Two tall palms stand at the edge of the double garage, previewing the tropical ambience of the waterfront home. The house has an Italian design combined with a bit of tropical flair, built of beige stucco and trimmed with white.

Arched front windows complement the front entry. Four white columns grace the front of the house, and a peaked covered entry invites guests through the double glass doors. Pennanen and her mother, Wanda Cornelius, found their home in September 2008, and after a few months of renovating, moved in. They came to Pell City from Ponte Vedra, Fla., and discovered the location through Pennanen’s sister, Brenda Hamby, who has lived in the area for close to 25 years. Many in the Pell City area are acquainted with Hamby through her career as a restauranteur. She’s the former owner of Harbor Lights and Even Odds and now owns Louie’s Grill

and Countryside Farms on her horse farm on Logan Martin Dam Road. It was while riding around and looking at property with her sister that Pennanen found her home. “I’d seen it advertised in a real estate book, but there wasn’t an address given for it,” Pannanen said. “One day, we just happened upon it.” When she saw the photograph of the house, Pannanen said she knew it was the house she wanted. She just had to find it. There were changes to be made before moving in. Pannanen replaced the carpeting and mixed flooring with travertine to create a consistent look throughout the house. She also repainted the interior of the house a warm neutral base color and brightened the trim with white. “This opens up a house, and the rooms seem larger and the house seems more open,” she said. She also took out a wall between the great room and what has become the music room to open things up a bit more. Many of her favorite furnishings fit right in, along with some great finds from Timm’s Antiques in Pell City. Pennanen has collected furnishings and art and other decorative pieces through the years, and she favors traditional

pieces that stand the test of time. “When I travel, I always spend time going into the local home décor shops and gift shops,” she said. She finds all kinds of interesting things in her visits. Some of her favorites are the matching crystal chandeliers hanging in the piano room and dining room and a metal sculpture featuring musical instruments she found in Cedar Key, Fla., that she placed over the fireplace in the great room. A crystal candelabra placed on the baby grand piano is another favorite find. She found it in an antiques mall in Jacksonville, Fla. The piano room is also the place Pennanen found for a glass-topped table made with a repeated violin sculptured base. She topped it with a bronze scrolled lamp fitted with a shade bearing a musical score. A bust of Beethoven provides inspiration from its position of honor atop the piano. The music room is just off the great room and foyer, where an antique Chinese medicine chest fitted with 30 tiny drawers stands below an ornate framed mirror. A chandelier overhead adds sparkle to the entry, which is open to the great room. A plump sofa and loveseat covered in scrolled white fabric are arranged in the great room around a glass-topped table built on a scrolled gold base. Twin arched built-in bookshelves border the fireplace. Two deep rattan chairs with cozy cushions are also used in the room, where The piano room was created by taking out a wall. The chandelier used in the room is one of Pannanen’s favorite finds.

a series of square white pillars set the room off from the entry and piano room. Duplicated French doors lead from the great room to the screened porch that runs across the back of the house, affording a full waterfront view. The porch is furnished in black wicker with floral print cushions. Guests can linger over a lakefront meal on the large glass-topped dining table or graze at the bar. For water attractions, the lake is paramount, but an in-ground pool and patio and a dramatic koi pond with an assortment of brightly colored fish enhance the landscape as well. Pennanen created an English garden on the grounds leading to the waterfront and the double covered boat house. Bright potted begonias surround the pool and patio areas. From the great room, it’s on to the kitchen where white cabinetry fitted with pewter pulls compliment black The fireplace makes a beautiful focal point in the great room, where a color palette of white and black adds to the room’s drama.

A dining table in a corner faces the water, and another counter offers additional bar seating. The kitchen opens into the den, where Pennanen used rich shades of brown, sage and beige. An elegant beveled-glass table offers seating for six. Chairs are cushioned in white. Rattan armchairs at either end have scrolled pewter along the arms. A brown marble-topped sideboard stands against one wall, where matching torchiere lamps flank an ornate mirror. Beside the front window in the dining room, a set of ram’s head urns hold sculpted topiaries. “I think these urns really make a statement,” Pennanen said. Framed botanical prints hang over a carved side table, with Oriental prints on a facing wall. Pennanen has used white blinds or plantation shutters rather than fabric window treatments throughout the house, allowing much natural light to filter through. There are four bedrooms and three baths in the single-level house. The layout offers privacy and space for each bedroom. The master bedroom along with Pennanen’s choice for her own bedroom, both located at the rear of the house, open to the patio and pool area through glass doors. carried throughout the house along with animal print accents in rugs and pillows. The master bath includes a deep, jetted tub and walkin shower along with a double white tiled vanity and white cabinetry with deep drawer space as well as traditional closets and storage areas. Plush monogrammed towels in neutral shades are stacked on shelves and alongside the tub, and lace-trimmed towels in ivory hang from a towel bar. The master bedroom’s king-size bed is covered with a beige silk spread edged in brown and eight decorative pillows stacked against the headboard. There’s an oversized double chair covered with soft sage fabric in one corner and a tall armoire and chest for storing clothes along two other walls. Glass doors lead outside to the porches and patio. Pennanen’s own bedroom is done in black and white. The bed and side tables are French inspired and finished in antique white. A zebra print area rug lies next to the bed, and an arched window looks out to the pool and lake. Pennanen is a certified home stager, working to assist homeowners in presenting their homes to their best advantage when the homes go on the market. She took early retirement from her job with Citibank and then decided to turn to her decorating interests for work.

It was the compliments she received from guests to her homes through the years that led her to decide to cultivate her talent as a second career. “People would ask me who my decorator was, and that was very pleasing,” she said. “I never thought about decorating as a career, but after my retirement, I did.” Pennanen offers certain suggestions in decorating, one being to paint common areas of a house in the same neutral

color and use rugs, art, pillows and other furnishings to add color. “And traditional furniture never goes out of style,” she said. “You can always change the look of a room with accents and accessories and not have to invest in new furniture that way.” One of the things Pennanen likes best about her home is having the space to accommodate family and friends. Entertaining runs in the family, and for the Fourth of July last year, she had 27 members of the family over for a fabulous get-together. “We all enjoyed a day of everything from swimming in the pool, boating, eating barbecue and watching the city’s fireworks from the patio,” she said. Pennanen and her mother enjoy the company of their two dogs, Bentley, a 13-year-old golden retriever who’s known to take a dip in the pool from time to time, and their white poodle, Bella, who’s a bit too dainty for water sports. For Pennanen, her home has it all, and although she has traveled far to see gorgeous sunsets, her very own view of Logan Martin Lake is the best. “I love to sit out on the deck by the pool, watch the sunset and I realize how truly blessed I am.”

The Town the Lake Swallowed

Hali Blackburn’s award-winning history project revives memories of Easonville.

U

nder the quiet waters of Logan Martin Lake lie the ghosts of Easonville, a town whose residents moved to higher ground as the lake waters rose. The town is gone, but not forgotten, thanks at least in small part to the research of Hali Blackburn, a fourth-grader at Coosa Valley Elementary School. Hali says that if you go to Lakeside Landing and look down, 20 feet below the water’s surface is where the old town stood. Hali recently won first place in her school and second place in the St. Clair County Heritage Project for her project, “Easonville: The Town That Disappeared.” She found that the 143-year-old town of Easonville was important for two reasons. One was that during

40

the Civil War, Easonville residents Ira Harmon and Frank Lee took coal on flatboats from Ragland to the Confederate Arsenal in Selma to make ammunition for Confederate soldiers. The second was that “the little town of Easonville gave up its life” so that we could have the hydroelectric power of Logan Martin Dam, which was completed in 1964. “I learned that this whole town is underwater since it flooded,” said Hali. She added that she had a lot of fun working on the assignment. As Hali sorted through old pictures of homes and buildings of the flooded town of Easonville, the Waite House became her favorite. “It’s like a mansion,” she said. “It’s huge.” She also believes that the Easonville Baptist

Hali adds the finishing touches to the home of Bolivar Eason.

Church that sits in front of Coosa Valley Elementary School was once called Easonville Methodist Church, based on the old pictures she had seen. Since winning second place in the St. Clair County Heritage Project, in which more than 400 history projects were entered, Hali’s project has been on display at Coosa Valley Elementary School in Cropwell, Fortson Museum in Odenville, the Pell City Public Library and the Pell City Board of Education. Hali, accompanied by grandparents Connie and Leland McCloud, was also recognized at the St. Clair County Board of Education’s March meeting. The project was assigned by Coosa Valley fourthgrade teacher Terry Kincaid. Kincaid said she assigned the project in conjunction with the contest that would later be judged by the St. Clair County Historical Society. First, Kincaid had students pick out a historic place in St. Clair County. Students were then required to write a report and make a model of the historic place that they chose. Students could only use natural materials to make the models.

Blackburn’s neat, organized model of Bolivar Eason’s home was completed over three weekends at the home of her grandparents, Marlow and Judy Warden. She used cane to construct the house itself. She cut juniper to use as trees around the Easons’ home. Wrinkled construction paper was used as coal. Styrofoam covered in moss was used to represent bushes in the front yard. Hali believed the Easons probably had a garden, so she used colored pipe cleaners to make squash, carrots and cabbage. Finally, she used cotton and pipe cleaners to create the illusion of smoke coming from the Easons’ chimney. Blackburn said she chose Easonville as the subject of her project because she lives in the Easonville community. During her research, she found that there was once a cemetery where her home now stands. Hali believes she has heard footsteps outside her home since learning about the cemetery.

An aspiring artist

d

Hali Blackburn’s artistic talents extend beyond creating the model for her history project. In March, she won first place in a music project at Coosa Valley. She had to create a musical instrument. She created a wind chime from a shoe, strings and bracelets. She chose a pink-and-white polka dot shoe, fuzzy strings and metal bracelets. She also added green bows to her project. The contest was open to all second-, third- and fourth-grade students at her school. Her grandmother, Judy Warden, said that Hali once did her own, unassigned project on snowflakes. She did research on the Internet and then created a poster board with her findings. Warden said it was a comparison of two snowflakes. She titled her project “No Two Snowflakes Are Alike.” Hali said she likes to work on projects even if she doesn’t have to. She even has her own room at her grandparents’ home that is filled with boxes of lace, paint, stickers, fabric and more. Hali says she would like to be an artist when she grows up — or at least do something that would allow her to use her artistic abilities.

New Fun on the Block

Square dancers entertain the crowd.

Pell City’s 2011 Block Party promises to be bigger and better than ever. By LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

M

aybe it’s the food and live entertainment, maybe it’s because it’s the perfect chance to get together with friends and family for some good old fashioned fun. But there’s one thing for sure about Pell City’s Hometown Block Party: People come out by the scores and it just gets better and bigger every year. This year’s party will fill the streets of downtown Pell City starting at 5:30 p.m., Friday, June 3, and events, vendors and music stages will be spread from one end of downtown to the other. “This is always such a great event,” said Lynn Batemon, executive director of the Pell City Chamber of Commerce. “And everybody loves a good party.” Since 1999, Pell City has had a block party. The event got its start with the 1999 class of Leadership Pell City, which operates out of the Chamber of Commerce. The class hosted a block party with one stage as a fundraiser for its class project.

48

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - May 2011

The next year, the chamber voted to adopt the black party as a yearly fundraiser, said Pam Adamson, who was president of the chamber at that time and now chairs the Block Party Committee. For the past 11 years, the committee has consisted of five former chamber presidents including Adamson, Tommy Bowers, Caran Wilbanks, Becky Bowman and Jason Goodgame. As far as the food offerings go this year, try some crawfish and shrimp, hot wings or Philly cheese steak, turkey legs, barbecue or Polish dogs, and that’s just for starters. On the sweet side, there’s ice cream and funnel cakes, snowcones and plenty of other treats to choose from. Those who like to shop will find jewelry, and burning rock candles, monogrammed items, T-shirts, lizards, turtles, decorated cake plates, baby quilts, and even more vendors to come, Batemon said. Each stage features different entertainment and has a sponsor. On the impersonator stage are the voices of Tom Jones, Elton John, Willie Nelson and Jerry Lee Lewis, courtesy of Terry Turner, the Man of Many Voices, Evan Mitchell impersonating Rascal Flatts,

look forward to seeing each year at this one event.” The crowd estimate for last year was 15,000, Batemon said. “It really does have something for everyone and families feel safe here with their children, she said. “Our law enforcement has helped us to make this constantly possible.” There is no admission charge for the black party. “The great thing is it’s right here at home,” Batemon said. “People from Pell City and other areas come to enjoy a fun evening. It’s an event that we are so proud of and greatly appreciate the support for it from the people of our community.”

Selling Homes, Making Friends Paula Krafft gets satisfaction from matching people with their dream homes. PAULA KRAFFT By LINDSEY HOLLAND

S

he got her start by digging in the dirt. Paula Krafft started working at Moody Realty 12 years ago. When she wasn’t in the office doing administrative work, she could be found outside with her broker. Her broker was also a home builder, so Krafft says she learned about the real estate business from the ground up — literally. “I knew what it took to build a house,” she said. “Besides doing office work, I was out on the ground testing soil and doing what it took to get a development started. I fell in love with the industry.” In 2005, Krafft decided to get her own real estate license, and in 2006 she did. She says it takes a lot of integrity, dedication, hard work and a love for being around people to work in the real estate industry. Krafft sells lakefront and land homes and even commercial real estate. She says she can do it all and says she represents buyers and sellers. “I just like the satisfaction of meeting so many people,” Krafft said of the job. “I’ve made a lot of friends over the years. Helping someone find their dream home or helping someone sell their home to be able to move forward gives me a good feeling.”

58

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - May 2011

Krafft believes purchasing a home is one of the biggest decisions people will make in their lives. “The decision to purchase a home is as big a decision as getting married or having children,” she said. “I find real satisfaction in helping someone achieve that goal.” When she’s not working, Krafft can be found at home with her family. A mother of three and grandmother of three, she says she attends church regularly and enjoys making time for scrapbooking and photography. With the real estate business, Krafft said she is constantly taking pictures of homes. But her computer at home, she said, is full of striking sunsets, wildlife and bustling creeks. Somewhere between her job, her family and her hobbies, Krafft also finds time for her community. She is a member of the Moody Kiwanis Club and is president of the Moody Chamber of Commerce. A life-long resident of the area, she says St. Clair County is a fantastic county with great leadership. She said Moody is a friendly, family-oriented community. “Besides being involved with the real estate industry, community engagement is very important,” she said. “I think volunteering in the community is important also. I’m really involved in the community. I’m not just an agent.”
