From the editor…
B
are shores emerging all along the lakefront are a sure sign of fall, as the water level begins its annual drop. The water started receding a little early this year because Alabama is in a low-level drought. The lake level was about a foot below normal by mid-September, although the drawdown was not scheduled to begin until the end of the month. Alabama Power Co. controls the water level in the lake — and not only Logan Martin, but Weiss and Lay lakes, as well — through a series of dams on the Coosa River. Although the power company’s interest is in generating electricity through the flow of water through the dams, the annual rise and fall in water levels is primarily for flood control. During the winter and spring, when the area typically gets the heaviest rain, the lake must be at its lowest level to accommodate the runoff. The drawdown is gradual over about three months, to reach the minimum level at approximately the beginning of winter. At winter pool, the lowest level the lake is allowed to reach, the surface is 460 feet above sea level. The highest level, summer pool, is only five feet higher, 465 feet. Now that the drawdown has begun, the lake level will continue to drop until it reaches winter pool in late December. It won’t stay precisely at 460 feet, however. At least twice last winter, heavy rains brought the lake nearly back to summer pool. In the dry days of October, when rain seems a distant promise, the newly expanded shoreline is a reminder that the lake not only provides recreation in the summer, it also minimizes the threat of flooding in the rainy season ahead. Traveling the Coosa Making Friends at Powell’s Hideaway. The low-key family campground offers quiet kinds of fun.
I took this picture of a large white egret taking flight.
I
knew they called it Powell’s Hideaway for a reason, and I recently found out how the camp by the lake came into existence. Powell’s Hideaway was once a thriving 300-acre, family-owned dairy farm. “Most of the farm land is underwater,” said Hugh Powell Jr., whose father ran cows on the land before the lake existed. “What was left was not suitable for farming.” He said his father was still alive when Logan Martin Lake was formed. His father owned and operated Powell’s Hideaway for 25 years before his death. Afterward, and the property was divided up among family members. Over time, it developed into a campground. “We try to have a family atmosphere here,” Powell said. “We have a lot of real nice folks.” Story and Photos by DAVID ATCHISON

A skier passes by me on my trip down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail.
Powell explained when the water in the lake was backed up, road access to the farm property restricted. “It was sort of hidden,” he said. He said the name, “Powell’s Hideaway,” sort of stuck to the old farm place. “It started with some camping and trailers and it grew from there,” Powell said. Today the campground has a mixture of mobile homes, campers and travel trailers. “People pay rent by the month or year,” Powell said, adding that overnight camping is not available. I suspect Powell’s Hideaway has more than a mile of lake frontage. As I paddled along the shoreline, I saw many families with young children.
Powell said about 90 percent of the residents have access to the lake. “We want everyone to have fun. That’s what we’re here for,” he said. “If you bother someone, you’re having too much fun. We aren’t for everybody.” He said Powell’s Hideaway stays full most of the time, but, “You have openings every now and then.” On my latest trip down the Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, I got a first-hand look at Powell’s Hideaway. The owners of The Yacht Club, a new 17,000-acre lake resort, allowed me to use their development as a launching place for my trip. I started my trip early and was greeted by a flock of Canada Geese.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail. October 2010 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

This tiki hut provides Jeff Smith of Sylacauga and his family and friends a nice shady place to relax by the lake.
The large birds were grazing in the open fields of the development. I drove by, taking some snapshots of the birds as I made my way to the spot where I launched my boat. The geese were among a many species of birds around this area of the lake, including egrets, herons and ducks, to name a few. A variety of birds gathered in a slough between The Yacht Club and Powell’s Hideaway, including a big, beautiful, white egret perched high in a tree. I took several pictures of this bird, including one of it in flight. It didn’t take me long to meet a few Powell’s Hideaway residents. “We’ve been coming down here for about 10 years,” said Lee Hartley of Moody. Hartley kept fishing from the pier in front of his travel trailer.
| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2010
“Lee has stood here and caught more fish than someone fishing from a boat,” said Donna Hartley, Lee’s wife. The Hartleys say they enjoy coming to Powell’s Hideaway to get away from the hustle and bustle and to just relax. Donna said she sunbathes frequently, but she likes the nights along the lake. “I like it at night better,” she said. “I come out here and sit at night. Last week, the sky was so clear. The stars reflected on the water. It was so relaxing.” She said Powell’s Hideaway residents visit with one another and sometimes have bonfires and group cookouts. “We’ll sit around and socialize,” she said. Lake residents I met that day said the lake water level was about two feet lower than normal, but the lower lake level didn’t seem to bother Lee.

“As long as Lee has water to fish in, he’s fine,” Donna said. At a slough down from the Hartleys’, I ran into Michelle Messina and her 5-year-old son Weston, of Birmingham. “We come up every weekend,” Michelle said, adding that she has been coming up to Logan Martin Lake since she was a small girl. “We’re here year-round, every week.” Michelle and Weston seemed to enjoy their fishing and

I met a lot of new friends on the lake. I can’t wait to return to Logan Martin for another adventure, but until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Fishing Phenom

At 13, Zeke Gossett is reeling in bass and trophies to match.
T
iger Woods was thought to be the future of golf from an early age. The future of professional fishing may reside along Logan Martin Lake. Zeke Gossett, a 13-year-old Cropwell resident, has turned heads in the fishing world for the past several years. After beating the competition in Alabama, Gossett moved up to the regional level and has even competed in World Championships. He’s got medals and trophies from B.A.S.S. and FLW tournaments and his latest honor may be his greatest. The Alabama Sports Festival held a bass fishing tournament as part of its summer games for the first time in 2010. Gossett reeled in a five-fish limit totaling 16.53 pounds to take home the individual title. He then teamed with fellow Pell City resident Anthony “Opie” Elliot to win the team competition. 12

By HEATHER BAGGETT Photos by BOB CRISP “He actually had enough weight to win the team competition by himself,” said Curtis Gossett, Zeke’s father. The National Congress of State Games chooses an Athlete of the Year each year. The award is given to one of the overall winners from the competitions held during the festival. Gossett was chosen out of nearly 4,000 competitors to be Alabama’s Athlete of the Year for 2010. “Zeke seems dedicated to the entire picture surrounding fishing,” said Tim Tidwell, the bass fishing tournament director for the Alabama Sports Festival. “He handles interviews, sponsors and educating of others about the sport very well.” While every tournament win is special, Gossett is counting the sports festival win as his most memorable for now. “My biggest was probably the sports festival,” Gossett said. “That was the biggest five-limit catch I’ve ever had.” Gossett has made a name for himself in fishing circles across the nation. He’s been featured in Bass Times, one of

the premiere angling magazines on the market. He’s also tested and reviewed rods for Field and Stream magazine. “I tested four rods,” he said. “They asked me to write a review about them. That was pretty cool.” While reeling in big bass and big trophies, Gossett has also managed to pull in a few big sponsors. He’s now on staff with Vicious Fishing, Strike King Jr. and E-21 Carrot Stix. Gossett’s parents, Curtis and Laura, said their son works hard at perfecting his craft. “He’s out on the water every day,” Laura said. “All of his friends want to know why he’s not on Facebook and all that other stuff. He just doesn’t care about that. He wants to have a rod in his hand.” Gossett said he’s not surprised to be so successful at such a young age. But then, that’s what he’s been taught. “He practices all the time,” Curtis said of his son. “He works at it. It’s not just something that just happens. Every time he goes out there, we want him to believe he can win. You’ve got to expect to win.”

ver since Pamela Wilbanks was a little girl, she has been a little on the unique and eccentric side, much like the jewelry she makes. “I’m a leftover hippie,” Wilbanks said. Turquoise, coral, tumbled amethyst and glass beads all work together to make her distinctive creations come to life. Accompanied by her 1year-old Imperial Shih Tzu named BamaLola, Wilbanks now beads under her own brand “Diva Design” exclusively for Uptown Girls in Pell City. Wilbanks lost her job as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines last August after suddenly losing her hearing, but never lost her passion for beading and decided to pursue it full time.

Losing her hearing propelled jewelry maker Pamela Wilbanks into a new career
With the help of her hearing aid, she said she is now much busier beading full-time than she was as a flight attendant. Wilbanks said she was happy it was her hearing that was taken from her and not her sight, or else she wouldn’t be able to do what she loves so well. She spends about four hours every day beading at her house by the lake on Logan Martin Lane. After living by the lake for about 30 years with her husband, she finds that the water inspires her. Coincidentally or not, she points out, her zodiac sign is Pisces. In one day she usually makes about four to five anklets, bracelets and necklaces.
Wilbanks said she gets clients who may want their jewelry to match their outfits, so she creates a personalized assortment of beads to coordinate with their ensemble.

Wilbanks is a self-proclaimed hippie who believes that her beads speak to her and give her the creative energy to create her jewelry.
At Uptown Girls, her necklaces usually range from about $15 to $50, her bracelets sell at about $16, and her anklets are about $12. Her jewelry pieces that are designed for Auburn and Crimson Tide football fans always attract the ladies who want to make sure they look stylish for the games, and her pieces designed with crosses attract ladies who want to look their best at church. What Wilbanks calls her “hobo beads” are for everyone, whether they wish to add a little bohemian flair to an everyday outfit or create a bolder piece by wearing two or three at one time. “Me, I never take the hobo beads off,” Wilbanks said. “You won’t find any two alike.” Wilbanks said it always gives her a good feeling when she often sees a woman walking down the street with some of her creations around her neck and wrists. “I’m so honored to have Pam here,” said Virginia C. Seales, co-owner of Uptown Girls, which has been in business for about six years. After being friends for some time, they all agreed that the store’s eclectic style of clothing meshed well with the bold and artsy jewelry of Diva Design. “They complement each other because they’re both unique and have a fearless attitude towards fashion,” Seales said. Wilbanks gets her beads from bead and gem shows, her friends in bead shops, and sometimes even in her travels around the country. “I’m always looking for beads all over,” Wilbanks said. She prefers to use glass beads for her jewelry but also hand paints her beads. She gets clients who may want their jewelry to match their outfits, so she creates a personalized assortment of beads to coordinate with their ensemble. Wilbanks has some advice for anyone interested in the art of beading. She said it is important to use the right type of wire for strength. She and her 83-year-old mother who beads with her also shared this secret: The two

smallest beads on a necklace are the strongest. These two beads, she says, must be secure because they help hold the clasp together. After those checkpoints are taken into consideration Wilbanks says, “Buy your beads and then start stringing!” Wilbanks says she enjoys the small and intimate feel of Diva Design and has no plans to mass produce her jewelry. The self-proclaimed hippie is enjoying her brand and continues to look for new ideas and creative inspiration, just as she did when she first started collecting gemstones and beading as a child in the 1960s. Her creations speak to her loud and clear, making it easy for the rest of us to see that bold and fearless fashion is just a bead away.

he Yacht Club on Lake Logan Martin wants to offer its tenants and guests a taste of “the good life.” The 70-acre spread offering a south view of the lake is in the process of construction. When finished, the gated community has planned to feature 198 units at The Cove Condominiums and 36 units at The Bluffs Townhomes. “The facilities we have here are more a way of life,” said owner and manager Robbie Robinson. “We are selling a place where you can come and stay the whole week. That is why we built a market store, so you will have all 20

your convenience items there.” “You will never have to leave this facility. But if you happen to want to, we are 7 miles from I-20, and we are 28 miles from the south side of Birmingham.” Another 55 units are also planned for its retirement community. For amenities, The Yacht Club will offer an 8-acre marina, tennis and basketball courts, a 30,000square-foot clubhouse and a 220-seat chapel. “Our next stage is our clubhouse and our chapel,” Robinson said. “We will begin those in the next 45 days.” “We are going to be a destination wedding facility

along with having The Yacht Club,” he said. In addition, residents and guests will have their very own “Paradise Island” 200 feet from the lakeshore. The 5-acre island will feature a pavilion for receptions, 10 gazebos and volleyball courts a short boat ride away. A 1.5 mile walking trail will meander around the living areas, and each facility will have its own swimming pool. The lakeside condos will also feature a junior Olympic pool and water park. The condos will have either two bedrooms and two bathrooms or three bedrooms and three baths. The larger models, at 1,600 square feet, are to be sold for $350,000. They are broken down into two buildings, one with 88 units and the other with 110. Robinson said while anyone will be able to purchase the condos, they will be specifically marketed for sale to “NASCAR” and “Nashville.”
Kitchens offer stainless-steel appliances, tile backsplashes and granite countertops.
“We are encouraging NASCAR because since they are not here all the time, they are looking for security,” he said. “This facility is gated all the way around and security on 24 hours a day. So it encourages the type of people that want privacy.” “It is the same thing with Nashville. You will get some singers and songwriters that want a vacation but they don’t want everybody asking for autographs.” When owners are not there, the living quarters will be rented out through the club’s office to vacationers and people coming for weddings and other get-togethers. The club then charges the owners 30 percent of the rental fee. “We keep the units cleaned, they are insured and we make sure there is no damage,” Robinson said. “We do your collecting. We send you a 70 percent check every time we rent your unit. People love that, because they never have to touch it. They come and buy a unit for $350,000, and they end up making

Johnnie Bagwell has created a haven at Driftwood Point. 28
Her spot on Logan Martin Lake is at the end of a winding little lane, where what she’ll tell you she likes best about lakefront living is obvious. It doesn’t take many words for Johnnie Bagwell to tell of her love of living on the water. “It’s just so peaceful,” she says, looking out at the main channel view from the softly sloping grounds that surround her home. This community on the St. Clair side of the lake is called Driftwood Point, and

homes are nestled between old-growth trees and carefully tended lawns. Bagwell’s yard is dotted with stonebordered flower beds where bunches of lantana and crape myrtles are still bursting with color in late summer and a long shoreline stretches along the water’s edge. There’s an old fashioned wooden swing hanging near the dock, a great vantage point for watching the activity on the main channel. One of Bagwell’s two favorite spots in

her home is on the rear of the house, the ground-level patio where carefully tended planters create a bright blooming understory against a border of shade trees. “I really love it out here,” she said. “I spend lots of time on this patio.” The patio extends from a covered porch that stretches across the rear of the two-level house, underneath the screened porch and deck above. That’s another great place for enjoying the water, and where Bagwell has placed a
set of antique wicker furniture covered with soft floral cushions in shades of rose and green. At one end of the porch is a white wicker swing, a place where Bagwell invites guests to relax and share a few minutes of her peaceful retreat. Double doors lead into the great room on the main level of the house, where matching couches in soft blue face a marble-bordered fireplace and woodtrimmed mantel. The mantel displays Bagwell’s collection of crystal clocks. Above hangs a painting, “Winter Break,” by Pell City artist Wayne Spradley, and below, gas logs stand ready in the centrally placed fireplace. To one side is a square oak table with carved legs that has dual leaves on two sides for adding seating. Chairs used with the table have the same scrolled carvings along their legs. The spot is a good place for seating extra guests for meals or handy for playing games when grandchildren visit. A framed front page from an Indianapolis newspaper hangs on a wall beside the table, recording the day President John Kennedy was assassinated. Jewel-toned pillows with sparkles of beading are arranged on the couches, making an inviting place for visiting with friends. The oak floor is covered with a large Oriental rug in burgundy and blues with touches of gold and green in a pattern of scrolls and marching horses. Walls in the great room are warm gold, and triple tray ceilings are trimmed with white molding. Bagwell credits decorator Kaye McDaniel of Pell City with helping her make choices inside the house. Floor-to-ceiling columns defining the great room from the dining room are painted white. A beveled-glass table for eight is used in the dining room, and chairs are covered in satin striped fabric in tones of sage. Underneath, there’s an Oriental rug in the same hues as the one in the great room. A bronze chandelier overhead is fitted with 10 shaded lanterns, and a tall china cabinet hold Bagwell’s collection of Desert Rose china, along with a variety of pieces from her assortment of shimmering Waterford crystal. Window treatments in the dining room are floral patterns in 30

rose and sage, arranged in pleated tiers over plantation shutters used throughout the house. In a corner, Bagwell keeps a silk ficus tree trimmed in tiny white lights, “It’s cheerful,” she points out. At the other side of the dining room stands a sturdy threedrawer sideboard with scrolled carvings, a piece from her parents’ home in Ragland, where Bagwell grew up. The piece is bordered with matching Windsor chairs and on one side, a grandfather clock ticks away the hours. Over the sideboard hangs a floral oil painting done with touches of reds and yellow. Another Spradley painting hangs in the room, a rendering of Cropwell Baptist Church. It’s the adjacent kitchen and keeping room on one side of the house that Bagwell says she enjoys most inside her home. The design was part of the Southern Living house plan she chose, and one that has served her needs well, she said. A cooking and food preparation area is arranged along the left side of the room and a broad granite-topped work island separates the seating area from the kitchen. Granite countertops flecked with black and gold stretch along the oak cabinetry, and an arched window looks out to the water. Kitchen cabinets include a handy built-in plate rack over the deep double sink. Along the tops of the cabinets is Bagwell’s collection of Christmas Village pieces, stretching around two sides of the room. Bagwell chose a gas stainless-steel stove, which she favors for those rare times when power goes out, along with a large stainless-steel refrigerator with a large freezer on the bottom. Behind the countertops is a patterned tile backsplash done in reds and golds, designed by Paul Golden, owner of I-20 Carpet in Pell City.
The dining room can seat eight and adjoins the great room. The rooms are set apart by a series of white columns. Some of Bagwell’s collection of Waterford crystal is displayed in the china cabinet.
Bagwell is fond of roosters, and a colorful crowing ceramic bird greets visitors to the kitchen, perched tall on the work island, with pieces of pottery and plates with similar images in the kitchen area as well. On the other side of the island, two matching leather armchairs in deep green face a brick-bordered fireplace, and above the mantel is a flat-panel television. Bagwell used an antique butcher block as a table inbetween the chairs, and covered it with a section of tile left over from the kitchen backsplash. “This room is where I stay,” Bagwell said. “It works really well for me.” The floor is oak, and off to one side is a dining area, designed into an oval space surrounded with arched windows that face the water. A tray ceiling sets off the room, and white molding is used for trim. On the other side of the keeping room, a large laundry room and pantry leads to the garage entry. The master bedroom and two guestrooms are down a hall from the other side of the foyer, where a full guest bath and storage closets are also located. Guestrooms are side by side at the end of the hall. The first has a carved four-poster bed covered with a powder-blue quilt and plush piles of pillows in blue and white with a matching pleated bedskirt.
The kitchen features tile work designed by Paul Golden of I-20 carpet. There is an adjoining keeping room and breakfast nook with a threesided lakefront view.

The master bedroom is on the main level and soft rose and greens are used for window treatments and bed coverings.
A pair of marble-topped tables flank the bed, holding matching metal lamps with ivory shades. Sheer gold silk drapes border the broad widow, accenting taupe walls. A polished highboy has stacks of storage drawers, and a rack holds handmade quilts Bagwell has found here and there in antique shops she likes to frequent. A collection of tiny shoes of various styles through the years is displayed in a tiered case hanging on one wall. A second guestroom on the main level also has a four-poster bed, this one covered with a white quilted spread with matching pillows and shams. Windows are framed with floral fabric in greens and rose, and a side table holds photographs of Bagwell as a baby, placed alongside those of her daughter and granddaughter. Bagwell also placed an antique sewing machine in the room, which can be used as a table as well. Bagwell is an experienced seamstress. “I used to make almost all of my clothes,” she said.

delier overhead. Double walk-in closets are entered from the master bath. The lower level of the house features a complete living area and kitchen, perfect for having friends over for football get-togethers, which Bagwell hosted for the first Alabama game this season. Long matching leather couches in burgundy can hold a crowd. There’s also a table with seating for six and additional seating at the kitchen bar with rattan-covered stools. Windows overlooking the lake surround the room. There’s a fireplace fitted with gas logs along one wall, and double doors lead outside to the lower-level porch and patio. A bedroom suite looks out to the lake, and has room for guests. Downstairs, too, are two large rooms used now for storage that can also be used as bedrooms. Back on the lower patio, pots of red impatiens dot the area, and ivy mixed together in hanging pots of tiny yellow flowers make the area a pleasant place to pass the time. While great blue herons march along the shoreline and gulls glide in the light wind overhead, Bagwell, says, “This is a special place for me. Like I said, it’s just so peaceful here on the water.”

D’oros catering in Pell City has roots as far back at the late 1950s, when Tim Hawkins’ great grandfather opened Doro’s pizzeria in Chicago. Tim and his wife, Sundi, operate their catering business together. Tim, who has been cooking since he was a child, learned how to cook by spending time in his grandmother’s kitchen. Sundi learned from Tim, when they started dating eight years ago. Although Tim’s great-grandfather’s original pizzeria closed in the late 1980s, there are two other restaurants still in business today, one in Chicago and one in Florida. D’oros catering has been in business for three years, and Tim and Sundi have been married for three and a half. They realized

“I think people enjoy our food because we never sacrifice quality,“We always strive to use the freshest ingredients, making everything homemade.” – Sundi Hawkins their dream of catering four years ago. “We were cooking for so many holiday parties, we realized we should be getting paid,” Sundi said. Sundi said Tim is the better cook, no contest. She also said he does more of the cooking. How is it running a business with her husband? Sundi said, “I can’t help but laugh when I try to come up with an acceptable answer for this. Let’s just say it never gets boring.” Owning a catering business can be a task within itself, especially during the holiday season. In addition to their business, the Hawkinses also have a 1-year old son, Lucius. “I stay home with him in addition to running the catering business,” Sundi said. “He keeps me pretty busy.” Sundi said she has noticed her business “slightly” slow down in the sluggish economy, but she said she has noticed more people tightening their budgets. As long as people are still getting married, they still have a business, she said. The holiday season is a busy time of the year for them, as there are more parties. She said the most important thing when it comes to running a business is quality control and customer satisfaction. “I think people enjoy our food because we never sacrifice quality,” she said. “We always strive to use the freshest ingredients, making everything homemade.” Sundi said the most unique event they have catered was when Tim did a pig roast. “He actually butchered the whole pig and made his own spit and
everything,” she said. “I was a little leery about the whole idea, but it was actually the best barbecue I’ve had.” For the upcoming holiday meals, Sundi said to prepare as much as you can the day before. This way, you can spend more time with your family and less time slaving over a hot stove. “And if you are not the cook, remember this, those who don’t cook, clean,” she said. For quick and easy recipes for football weekends, Sundi suggests Caramelized Chicken Wings and Jalapeno Popper Dip and for dessert, blondies.

Winterizing your Pool
By CHRIS NORWOOD
The better job you do of closing your pool, the sooner you’ll be swimming next summer.
Y
ou might not know it, what with temperatures in the 90s reaching toward October, but fall eventually will arrive, and it will be time to close up the pool. The end-of-season chore is probably no pool-owner’s favorite activity, but getting the pool ready for the winter is important for minimizing maintenance and repairs next spring when the kids will be clambering to jump in. Fortunately, you’ve got options, according to Brian Fowler of Cahaba Pool Services and Gina Capps of Pell City Pool and Spa. “The most important thing is the exposure of the equipment,” Fowler said. “If there’s a freeze, you want to make sure all your plugs are free of water. How you do that depends, though. Every pool is different.” An air tank can be used to blow out the lines and create air pockets, and all the return lines need to be plugged once they are drained. “A gizmo is a device you place in the skimmer housing that expands in. They’re cheap and they’ve been around a while. You want to make sure you’ve got the
42
| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2010
right kind for your skimmer, and make sure you get the right size.” If you have an above-ground pool, winterizing is even simpler, Capps said. “You just remove the pump and put it in the garage, especially if you have a place out near the lake. Obviously you can’t do that with an in-ground pool, though.” Covering the pool for the winter reduces evaporation and helps keep the water clean by keeping the chlorine in and leaves and debris out. Pool covers are available in a range of styles and prices. Among the least expensive pool covers are simply large tarpaulins held in place by waterbags lined up around the edges of the tarp on the pool deck. The waterbags are inflatable tubes, each about 8 to 10 feet long, Capps explained. Instead of air, the bags are filled with water, and their weight prevents the cover from falling into the pool. In the spring, the bags are simply slipped off the cover, emptied and stored. Capps cautioned against using bricks or rocks to weight down the edges of the cover. “The first rain you get is going
to cause issues, and you’ll get water and sand it,” she said. Then there are the safety covers. “A safety cover is like a trampoline stretched over the pool. You can drive a car on to it, and the tires would get wet, but the car would not go into the water, Capps said. “And you can have permanent anchors set in your deck, where you just use an Allen screw to pull them up when you need them. Super easy.” “You can also use a mesh cover, which is lighter and easier to handle,” she said. According to Capps, a mesh cover allows some sediment to get into the water, but it is dark enough to prevent algae growth, and it can be cleaned off with a leaf-blower. Before covering the pool, “It’s also important to get the right chemical balance and to use the right winterizing equipment,” she said. “Among other things, if you overchlorinate, gases can dry rot your cover.” Folwer added “if the pH of the water is below 7, it will be aggressive. A pH of 7.4 to 7.6 is probably ideal. You’ll also want a strong sanitizer and algaecide.” “If you do a good job closing,” Capps concluded, “opening will be easy and hassle free, which is exactly what you want when the weather starts to warm up.”

Energy efficiency comes with luxury amenities at Lakeside Cottages.
A
Lincoln subdivision is building for the future with green home technology. “We are trying to be more energy efficient and save money,” said Lisa Keenum, owner/broker of RE/MAX Properties Unlimited in Lincoln. Lakeside Cottages is located on Rushing Springs Road and Talladega 207. “We have sold 11 homes so far since the development started in 2005,” she said. “We have four green homes in this phase.” Keenum said one of the green homes sold, but two are available and another is under construction. “The homes have more than 1,300 square feet with three bedrooms, two baths, kitchen, living room and attached garage,” she said. Keenum said some models have a one-car attached

garage and some have a two-car attached garage. “The homes feature energy-saving appliances, granite countertops, hardwood floors, crown molding, stainless-steel appliances, tile in the kitchen and baths, gas fireplaces and an open floor plan,” she said. Keenum said the homes are priced at $134,900 and $136,900. “Most of the time, you don’t get the amenities such as granite countertops, hardwood floors and more in a house in this price range,” she said. Keenum said the exterior of the green homes features brick and hardy board. “You can customize the home if you purchase early enough in the construction phase and request carpet or certain colors,” she said. Keenum said the houses have gone through inspection

procedures and are certified green. “The inspectors test the house construction and products throughout the building process,” she said. “And the builders must also be certified to build green homes.” Keenum said Chuck Hawkins, owner of Tyler Construction, Sean Dessau, owner of Crescent City Homes, and Danny Jowers, owner of Jowers Enterprises, are the certified green builders for the project. Ken Horton, who purchased a green home in Lakeside Cottages at the beginning of September, said he moved in early in August. “I love it,” he said. “It is energy efficient and one of the green houses.” Horton said the house is very quiet. “There is a lot of traffic outside, but I hardly ever hear it,” he said.

Ken Horton recently purchased a green home and is “tickled to death” with how quiet and energy efficient it is.
Horton said the house’s insulation muffles the outside noises. “Since I moved in the house, I haven’t changed my thermostat from 78 degrees,” he said. “With the help of ceiling fans, which I run on low to circulate the air, the home stays cool without needing to use the air conditioner,” he said. “The air conditioner only kicks on maybe every two days.” Horton said a partial electricity bill came in at about $40. “The builder thinks it will run between $50 and $90 a month for the power bill,” he said. “I am tickled to death with it. It is unbelievably low for a power bill in a house this size.” Horton said the power bill for a mobile home with the same square footage ran about $200-$300 a month. “It will save me quite a bit of money,” he said. “That is the reason I bought it.” Horton said the home is everything his wife Ellette could want. “We had been looking for something, and this is the first house that had everything we wanted and called a green house,” he said. “We love it.”
