Lake comes to life again Carol Pappas has found duck eggs like these all around the lakeside.
From the editor… While spring heading into early summer has been wetter than normal, those days of sunshine give a glimpse into one of the lake’s most appealing seasons. It is a rebirth of sorts after winter when the grass and foliage turn varying hues of green and roses, daylilies and other flowers beginning to bloom provide a picture-perfect pallet of colors. I call it a rebirth, because that is indeed what it is – the natural beauty of the lake and its surroundings coming to life once again. Turtles, birds, gulls, mallards, herons – they’re all a part of the scenery, and they are a quite a sight to behold. But my favorite is the explosion in the duck population this time of year. Hidden in the oddest of places are nests of duck eggs waiting to hatch. I have spotted them in every place imaginable over the years – from areas underneath shrubbery to a flower planter on a pier. Last year, I even found a mother and her nest in a storage bin on my boat. I rode the mother and her eggs around all spring. I didn’t want to disturb the natural process but was in desperate need of a boat ride, and she seemed perfectly content to go along. The other day, I found another nestled snugly up against a seawall with nine eggs resting inside. In the coming weeks, those nests will come alive, and I will be seeing those tiny web-footed wonders taking their first trip along Logan Martin Lake, their mother leading the way. To me, it is the magic of spring and the allure of summer on the lake. It’s June. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be.

An eye for the beauty of nature EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail. It was a familiar sound to me. “Gobble, Gobble, Gobble,” then the wild turkey repeated its spring call, again and again. The Old Tom was calling up his hens that early spring morning. It’s not an unusual sound for turkey hunters to hear during the spring, but I wasn’t turkey hunting. I was continuing my journey down the Logan Martin Lake portion of the Alabama Scenic River Trail by kayak. When I heard the turkey, I couldn’t help but think of my friend, Johnny Ponder of Munford, one of the best turkey hunters I’ve come to know. He would have been swimming across the river to get to that Tom, well maybe not. I don’t
think he’s a real good swimmer. It wasn’t the only thing I heard that morning as I paddled down Logan Martin Lake. I heard a rustling of leaves just off in some thickets. It didn’t take long to realize what I was hearing was a group of whitetail deer. One let out a loud snort. I guess the deer caught my scent as I eased by in my kayak, or perhaps it got a glimpse of my long yellow touring kayak. I figured as I moved down from the upper end of the lake, heading south to the more populated area of Logan Martin Lake, I would see less wildlife, but that hasn’t been the case at all. And if you aren’t seeing the critters that live on, in and along the lake, my advice is to just slow down and enjoy the sights and sounds. There’s plenty to see. It’s just some people can’t see the trees for the forest. Continued on Page 8

Water
From Page 7
A white egret wades in shallow water along Logan Martin Lake. We tend to be in too big of a hurry. Sure it’s fun to zoom down the lake in a ski boat or on a personal watercraft, even to race to that fishing hole where a big bass is waiting to be hooked, but I really enjoy the pace that my kayak offers. I don’t want to get on my soap box, but kayaking really brings you closer to nature, and to me, it’s one of the best ways to learn and see what Logan Martin Lake really has to offer. There in the corner of my eye, I saw something sparkle. The position of the sun was perfect. This large spider web was absolutely gorgeous. It had beads of water along the tiny webs, so perfectly built. I’m sure I

wouldn’t have seen that from a fast-moving boat. I like to paddle my kayak close to the shoreline. My narrow boat glides almost silently along the water, and I make very little noise paddling. I try not to rush. I’m always looking ahead and along the shore for animals. It’s surprising how many animals, birds and other critters I’m able to get so close to before they realize I’m there. It’s like that grey squirrel. I spotted him before he spotted me. When he finally realized I was there, he jumped onto the side of a tree, Continued on Page 10

posing for a quick picture. My last kayaking trip took me from Lock 4 slough along the St. Clair County side of Logan Martin Lake to a slough along the Talladega County side in Lincoln. The entrance to the Lincoln slough had campers and trailers along the shoreline. An island, that I say would be big enough to pitch a tent on and camp overnight, is also at the mouth of this slough. The island was a little weedy, but if you aren’t too worried about snakes, no problem. By the way, that’s one thing I have yet to see since I’ve started my kayaking journey – a Mr. NoShoulders. As I paddled down this slough, I almost turned around too soon. It looked like it ended, but I kept paddling around a bend and into a small, quaint community. I’m glad I kept paddling. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met Lincoln third-grader Hunter Howie and his family, including his grandparents Eddie and Vera Ryder of Anniston. “I just love it here,” said Hunter, who was fishing with his brother, Nolan, and half-brother, Austin Stockinger. Oh, and I almost forgot Duke, their fishing springer spaniel. “Duke’s the best fisherman here,” claimed Ryder. “He’ll jump in the water and pull out a fish.” Duke watch intently as the younger Nolan eased his hook into the water. He baited it with bologna, and perhaps it was a little too close to dinner time for Duke. Anyway, Hunter let me know about lake living and the things you can see, if you only look. “There are woodpeckers and owls, and we have two eagles that live around here,” Hunter said. I’ve seen the bald eagles Hunter talks about. I recently spotted one perched on a tall, distant tree, overlooking a large grass field. I’ve had the pair of eagles fly right over me. These are magnificent birds, majestic. I could watch them all day long and not get bored. Hunter said he recently saw a young wild turkey, a Jake, sporting a short beard. The youngster said deer will ease through their yard at times. “I’ve seen foxes, rabbits and there’s a rare box turtle that lives around here,” Hunter said. Hunter, who only recently got hooked on fishing, said there are plenty of fish to catch around their lake home property, just up from Honda Drive. “We don’t like to let that out too much,” his grandfather joked. After our short visit and goodbyes, I headed back to where I had started. On my next trip I will head from Lock 4 Slough down Logan Martin Lake, toward the heart of Riverside. So until then, have a happy and safe time on the lake. — P.S. slow down and enjoy the lake.

ART BY THE WATER So much art in Nettie Bean’s life
Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Bob Crisp Nettie Bean makes no apologies for her style of painting. It is big. It is bold. It is arresting. And it is just the way she likes it. “I paint for me. It’s what I’m driven to do,” Bean said. “I’ve always liked to paint big, always.” The Eden artist considers her artistic talent a gift from God, and she works to squeeze every ounce of that talent onto the canvas. When her job schedule is not overwhelming, she makes a point to paint at least one painting every week. “There’s just a limited amount of time in your life and so much I want to do. It’s one reason I keep so many paintings started, because if you don’t start it, you can’t finish it,” Bean explained this as she talked about her most recent painting – a hummingbird getting nectar from a flower against a bright green background. She did not realize she had a knack for painting when Continued on Page 14 Nettie Bean said she considers her artistic ability a divine gift and paints for her own satisfaction more than to just sell her paintings.

she was growing up. She was more interested in fashion and designing her own clothes “When I got to college, I took an art class as an elective, and the light came on,” Bean said. “I took a few classes, maybe two painting classes, and then after college, I just painted. I sold house portraits door to door. I knocked on doors and asked people if they would like a painting of their historic houses. That was my self training.” She has painted fruit and flowers and people, too, but her favorite subject matter is the animal kingdom. “They’re just more fun to paint. You’ve still got life, and things going on in the eyes, but you’ve got all the colors and shapes you don’t have in people’s faces,” Bean said. She likes to go out and take pictures of natural scenes and animals to serve as subject matter, and she also will buy picture books and magazines and calendars to paint animals from more exotic locales. Her job often takes her to Louisiana, and one of her goals is to snap some pictures of Continued on Page 16

From Page 14 an alligator for a future portrait. “(I) stay on a swampy lake down there, and I go out in my kayak, so all of my friends are convinced I’m going to be eaten by an alligator,” Bean said. The walls of Bean’s home are filled with paintings, most of them depicting animals. Several are on display at the Artscape Gallery on Cogswell Avenue in Pell City, and most of those are animals, as well. She is working on developing a Web site, www.nettiebean.com, that is not ready yet, but she hopes will be ready soon. She dabbled with watercolor and acrylic, but her favorite medium by far is oil painting. After taking a break from painting to focus on raising her family and taking it up again around seven years ago, she has almost exclusively worked with oils. “Oil just has a quality about it that just glows. It requires a lot more patience because you’ve got drying time, and you can’t overwork an area without ruining it and making it muddy,” Bean said. She takes joy in both the process and the finished product in painting. “When I’m painting, I’m totally content; I’m totally happy. “My amount of time I have to paint is very limited, and I enjoy everything about it when I’m sitting here at the canvas. But I enjoy the finished product. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment. I enjoy the reaction from other people,” Bean said. One of her favorite paintings not involving animals is a scene she painted that she remembered seeing at her church, of an elderly man helping his wife put her coat on in front of a stained glass church window. It often gets that emotional response she likes to see. Bean rarely takes commissions these days because she enjoys painting what she likes and liking what she paints. Even though she thinks she could probably sell more paintings if she just started painting smaller or to match a home décor, her sales figures are the least of her concerns. Her art is not a burden on her. It makes her happy. All artists should be so lucky.
One of her paintings that hangs in Pell City’s Artscape Gallery is of a blue heron. Bean is most happy painting animals.
Bean was putting the finishing touches on this hummingbird painting during the interview.

Rory Cochran likes to think of his work as a form of art. And it is. Only, Cochran doesn’t use paint or brushes, his color comes from blooming shrubs and flowers and his tools are picks and shovels. The ground is his canvas. He’s been a professional landscaper for about seven years now, and he’s been a part of beautifying many of the Logan Martin lakefront homes since. “It’s kind of like painting a picture on the ground,” Continued on Page 20

Cochran says, adding that he loves the work he does for a lot of reasons. “I do love my work. I really like to see something through from start to finish,” he said. Cochran and his partner, Matt Smith, have formed Southern Landscape Group, LLC, and specialize in both commercial and residential projects. Their work is about 30 percent commercial and about 70 percent residential, Cochran said. Cochran completed state certification, Setting of Landscape Plants, in 2003, and Smith is an Auburn graduate in horticulture. Cochran said his interest in landscaping and gardening has largely come from hanging out as a teenager with his “second mom,” Roxanne Bucakek of Riverside, an artist whose Riverside home on Logan Martin is well known for the gardens she’s created. “That’s where I get this from,” he said. Cochran said he and Smith stay booked up with jobs about two months ahead of time and that their business has been built purely by word of mouth. Their services include landscaping, irrigation and outdoor lighting, but the company doesn’t enter into maintenance contracts. The company does offer the service of taking out existing landscaping as well as adding the new

design. Work stays pretty regular year round, he said, it doesn’t slack off much during the winter months. The company can come up with a design plan for customers or work with one a customer has come up with, Cochran said. Cochran and Smith often work with another designer, Shelly Martin of Pell City, when creating designs. Continued on Page 22

Landscaping Cochran mentions that Martin created the design for a lake home many who drive over the Alabama 34 bridge into Pell City are familiar with. There’s a long bank above the water planted entirely with red knock-out roses that can be seen from the bridge, often lighted at night. It’s the home of Johnny and Cindy Grimes of Pell City. The landscaping includes huge beds of azaleas and other plants that were used in the design. Cochran points out two common mistakes people make when doing their own landscaping without a professional. “The biggest problem people have that I see is putting the wrong plant in the wrong place,” he said. “That, and putting things too close together, not paying attention to the plants’ growth patterns.” These are two mistakes that can add up to a costly error, he said. With their designs, Cochran said, he and Smith like to have something blooming in a setting all year long. The work they do allows them to make a drastic change in a landscape, Cochran said. “That’s what I like to do,” he said. “Take a piece of dirt and make something pretty out of it.”

Edie Golden, owner of the specialty shop, moved the store in March to Covenant Court at 2107 Martin St. S., not far from its former home. “In our new location, we have a wine room similar to a wine cellar,” she said. “We keep that room at a lower temperature to keep the wines fresher and can also lower the lights.” Golden said the Stafford House offers a wide variety of wines. “We have a selection from Cabernets to Zinfandels to Rieslings,” she said. “We have sweet and dry wines, whites, reds, and rose or blush wines.” Golden said she tries for a wide variety of wines from all over the world. “We have Chilean, Argentine, Italian, German and French wines,” she said. “We also have wines from California; Oregon; Washington State; Washington, D.C.; and other areas.” The staff also offers clients advice upon request on which wines to pick. “We try to talk to our customers and try to help them choose the right wine,” she said. “We will ask
26
what food they are serving the wine with, what kind of wine they like, and other questions to help us recommend the best wine for their taste.” Golden said food makes a big difference on the wine taste. “What you just ate can change the taste of the wine altogether,” she said. “If you are chewing gum and then taste wine, that can also change the taste.” Golden said the Stafford House also hosts wine tastings from time to time. “We send out invitations by email and hold wine sales along with the wine tasting,” she said. Individuals may submit their email address for wine tasting invitations at the Stafford House. “The good thing about trying different wines at a wine tasting is you can find out which wines you like and also which wines you don’t like, without having to purchase a bottle of the wine,” she said. A variety of both red and white wines along with some of gourmet food offerings adorn the shelves, giving customers a place to buy some of those hard-to-find items in the Logan Martin area. “There are so many wines from all over the world, and the wine tasting offers a chance to try them,” she said. In addition to a wide selection of wines, the Stafford House carries a selection of gourmet foods, gourmet coffees, picnic and grilling items, bar accessories including different drink glasses, wine stoppers and openers, bar mops, wind chimes, jewelry, purses, pewter and crystal, picture frames, scented bath soaps and lotions, scented candles, and more. “We offer our ‘Taste of the Day,’ where customers can try our gourmet coffee,” she said. And the store is a draw for wedding gifts, offering bridal registration as well. “We also make baskets to order,” she said. “We make wine or gourmet food baskets, or both. And we make the baskets out of bowls or buckets or anything.” Customers can choose which items they want in the basket and she will create and wrap them to order. “We have a good selection of items,” she said, “and we work with our customers to make sure the gift basket is what they want.”

Remodeling effort takes waterfront home from cute to magnificent Lakeside living in
STYLE Story by Kendra Carter Photos by Brian Schoenhals
Books can’t always be judged by their covers, nor houses by their exteriors. Just ask GiGi Hood and Shirley Boyd. With its modest stature and rough cedar siding, their lakeside cottage is not like most other lake houses, leaving guests to wonder what they can expect when they walk in the door. Inside, the two have turned the small home into an airy, inviting atmosphere, ideal for sharing with their friends and families. The 1,550-square-foot home boasts three bedrooms, two bathrooms with a living room and dining room, plus a large, screened porch. That was not the case when the two purchased the house back in 2002. “When we bought it … it was two bedrooms, one bath, with no laundry,” said Boyd. The house, built in 1973, was approximately 800 square feet with 750 square feet of porch. Continued on Page 32 Through years of remodeling, this 1973 lake home has kept its cottage feel with its rough cedar siding exterior and original windows.

BELOW: Boyd and Hood converted the home’s original living room into a dining room, a sunburst in the wall separating it and the kitchen.
“Basically, the porch was as big as the house,” she said. Boyd, a Realtor with REMAX in Birmingham, said a client called and asked if he could sell his lake property and then told her she should buy it, but she declined. When she came to see the house that January, it was cold inside the house and smelled of mildew, and she said she told the client he couldn’t sell the house at that price, which they decided to lower. Her client made another attempt to get Boyd to buy the house. “He said, ‘I’m going to make you an offer you can’t refuse,’” she said. Continued on Page 34

Hood, a contractor and co-owner of S and G Properties LLC with Boyd, said she was dealing with a family issue and didn’t want to tackle the duties of a renovation. “I said, ‘Look, I’ll make you a deal. the change, the bathroom’s only door was off the kitchen. A laundry area was also added inside the bathroom, and hardwood floors replaced carpeting throughout the house. The two kept those changes for more than four years before deciding to remodel again, expanding the size of the house. During the second round of renovations, which began last April, the old porch was converted into a living room, master bedroom and master bath. To keep the master bedroom from feeling closed off from the rest of the house, they used glass partitions for walls separating the bedroom from the dining and living rooms.
36
“We wanted a master out here, but we also really did not want to make it closed in or make it dark in any way, so that’s why we decided to put up the glass partition,” Hood said. She said the two windows have shades and there’s a pocket door to add privacy, but said when she’s spent time alone or with her family at the house, she doesn’t really care if the door is shut or not. The new living room is a step-down from the kitchen with a fireplace and floor-toceiling double-insulated windows, giving a view onto the new porch. “We feel like the outside is on the inside,” Hood said.
LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, JUNE 2009
The kitchen before the renovation project (above) was nice, but is nothing compared to the showpiece that resulted from the work (facing page).
She said the porch is almost identical to the original house. A small change they added to the porch was sinking their hot tub into the floor, so the tub would not obstruct the view of the lake from the master bedroom or dining room. Instead of using glass windows, they chose screen panels to create three of the porch’s four walls, allowing a breeze to flow through the room. Hood said a benefit of the panels is if one gets damaged, the individual screen can be replaced. She said she and Boyd enjoy the porch year round. “In the winter, with the fireplace going in the living room, it’s like having a chalet getaway, except it’s on the lake,” she said. The renovations also brought about a revamp of Continued on Page 38

In the kitchen, the original cabinetry was replaced by honey-colored maple cabinets and a new Formica countertop was added. All the room’s appliances were also replaced with stainless-steel ones. Boyd and Hood also added a sunburst in the wall separating the kitchen and dining room to give more light to the latter. When they were completing the makeover, Hood said, they wanted to keep the integrity of the home’s exterior, so they used the rough cedar siding. Also, a panel of windows on the outside of the house was the same windows from the original porch they decided to reuse to keep the home’s cottage feel. They also added a wooden side porch near the home’s front entrance. Hood said it provides outside access to the large porch, while also offering an area to grill outdoors.

The home’s second remodel was completed in December. Tying together the newly renovated home with its original, vintage feel is the furniture. Boyd said most of the pieces were purchased from yard and estate sales. She said a few of the items belonged to Hood’s parents. Spread across the entire house, the two also have numerous photos, gifts from friends and other knickknacks, including the “Diva” statue that Boyd jokingly said guards the living room. “What we tried to do was just create something that when you get away, you feel like you’re at home,” Hood said. “This is what a second house out on the lake ought to be,” Boyd said.

Boat building 101
A partially completed boat frame sits in Bill Lankford’s workshop.
Bill Lankford started making toys — then he made the real thing Story by Katherine Poythress Photos by Bob Crisp Bill Lankford had never sailed and didn’t even live near the water when he began building his first wooden sailboat as a sort of lark. Approximately 15 years later, he now lives on Logan Martin Lake with his own boat workshop and is building his third full-sized sailing watercraft. Lankford has been working with wood his whole life and had been making small boats for his grandchildren when his son gave him a book by small craft expert John Gardner. “I was just piddling around and made 4foot rocking boats for the grandchildren,” he said. “I got through with that last little rocking boat for the last grandchild, and I said to (my
40
wife) Helen, ‘I’m going to build something big enough for us to ride in.’” And he did. Lankford picked a small craft project from Gardner’s book, and his first boat was a 16-foot dory, which he christened “HelLyn,” for his wife and his daughter. “I just started off building the boat, and about six months into it, I said, ‘What if we just hate sailing?’” he confessed, amused at what had been his eagerness to build something he might never have used. When they first launched the finished dory in 1996, however, the Lankfords were able to put their fears at ease: They loved sailing, after all. “My wife took some sailing lessons, so we Continued on Page 42

41
Boat building would just get in and sail as hard as we could go until something stopped us,” Lankford said. “And then we would get out of the boat and turn it around.” “Hel-Lyn” both functioned as a working sailboat, and a show boat as it garnered an array of awards from boat shows around the country, Helen said. “I had such a wonderful time building that small dory that I gave up other kinds of woodworking and just did boats from then on,” Lankford said. “I love it.” He began his second boat from his garage in Trussville, finishing it five years later in a lakeside workshop he constructed when he moved to Pell City’s Pine Harbor community. Lankford launched “Elbow Room” three years ago from his own dock into Logan Martin Lake. This boat was built from a design by famed naval architectengineer Nathanael Herreshoff. The glistening 16-foot boat is wider and therefore, more stable, than the dory, partially due to its 600-pound keel ballast made of lead. Lankford built “Elbow Room” specifically for his wife, he said. “‘Hel-Lyn’ was the original boat he built, and we used to sail it together,” Helen said. “Finally it got to where – he and I don’t sail alike – and I finally said, ‘This boat’s not big enough for two captains. I need a little elbow room.’” Lankford named the new watercraft in honor of his wife’s desire for her own sailing space, but “I think I’ve sailed it twice,” Helen said, laughing. “He loves it – he loves this boat.” “Elbow Room” captures a lot of awards as well, Helen said, but the original dory has been retired for the time being until it can be restored. In the meantime, Lankford

continues working on his next two projects: another Herreshoff sailboat, and a shorter craft he calls a pram. He has worked creatively to obtain enough white oak to complete his next sailboat. White oak is difficult to come by, he said, since you have to obtain it before it has been cured or dried out. It is ideal for boat-making because of its strength, resilience, resistance against rot and ease of manipulation, he explained. Lankford’s next boat will be made from white oak he obtained from a felled tree in Pell City. After a series of storms, he spotted the fallen tree by the road at Lakeside Park and asked then Mayor Adam Stocks for permission to remove it.
44
“Here they were paying people $200 a tree to get rid of them, and we said, ‘We’ll do it for free!’” said Helen. “It’s some beautiful wood and it was a big tree, so we got some nice big pieces out of it.” The workshop The white oak pieces are stacked in one of a few wood storage locations about Lankford’s property. Lankford looked wistfully at the ends of the white oak, which he had painted to keep them from drying out. He said it’s about time to start bending the frame for his next Herreshoff boat. “My white oak is getting off the stump too long,” he explained, gesturing to the stacks before stepping into his workshop to examine the pram he is currently working on.
LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, JUNE 2009
“I spend a lot of time out here, but I haven’t been diligent with this little boat,” he said. His self-proclaimed “lack of diligence” he partially attributes to his enjoyment of the sailing activity itself. But he affirmed that building the craft is still his favorite pastime. “Yep, this is my favorite place,” he said, gesturing around the breezy cool workshop arranged with countless tools and parts, all out in the open. “This is old people’s organization,” he said. “No cabinets where you can lose things. Everything is hanging up so you can stand and look around for it.” The tools he lives by include his planes and clamps. “I have about a million of them,” he said, pointing to clamps of various sizes, meant to hold wide boards together during the building process. The most challenging aspect of building these boats, he said, is to take the curved shape of the boat and transfer it to a flat shape on the work bench when he cuts. “There’s just no straight lines,” he said. “Everything has to be relatively and precisely laid out and cut.” When the measuring and laying out are done, he said, the final process is to “sight it and see if it’s fair – that’s boat talk. If it’s not fair and something’s wrong, you may have to start over on a piece of the project.” He said he has to do surprisingly few do-overs. It’s the intricacy, precision and outcome of boat-building that he loves.
Lankford admits his love of sailing ‘Elbow Room’ has kept him from spending as much time in his shop.

“Live well, laugh often and love much.” That’s Claire and Holland Powell’s philosophy of life, and it fits their philosophy on entertaining perfectly. “It’s especially true since we moved to the lake,” Mrs. Powell said. “We enjoy having groups of friends and family in our home. We love hosting parties for organizations with which we are associated, such as the Library Guild, May’s Bend Ladies Club, Holland’s tennis group, and our Jeff State lecture/study group.” On warm nights, guests sit on the porch for cocktails prior to the dinner, and in the winter, they dine by the warmth of the fireplace in their dining room. “Our favorite is for everyone to bring an appetizer while we provide the main dish and the bar.

Roast side of salmon with mustard, tarragon and chive sauce is one of the Powells’ favorite entrees when it comes to entertaining.
Claire and Holland Powell love to entertain and are quick to tell you entertaining is more than just a meal — it’s getting people together.
For some reason, this always works out just right, and no one goes away hungry,” Powell said. “If the weather is right, we like to take folks out on our boat for a cocktail cruise before dinner,” he said. “Out-of-town guests especially love this.” “We frequently serve seafood,” she said, “and we have found the best seafood markets are Sexton’s in Cahaba Heights and the Pell City Winn-Dixie. They also have very good steaks.” Continued on Page 50

She frequents bakeries and delis to find just the right palate pleaser, and her out-of-town guests especially love the Key lime pie from Rumor’s at Cropwell Commons. For a good wine selection locally, she shops Pell City’s Stafford House. The Powells are proud of their handcrafted utensils made by Pell City artists and enjoy using them when they entertain. “Some of our favorites are a large Kudzu bowl by Janice Entler, the funky glass pieces by Steve Smith, a turned wooden pepper mill made by Worth Barham and several of Leeds’ Tena Payne’s special pieces,” Mrs. Powell said. In addition, they have purchased several special pieces in Waynesville and Ashville, N.C. A wood and silver squirrel bowl from Colorado holds — what else, but nuts of course! Fresh is key to their entertaining — from flowers to vegetables. They get fresh blueberries in the summer from Wadsworth Farm in
An elegantly set table awaits the Powells’ guests, outside when weather permits, or fireside at other times.

Cropwell for a wonderful cobbler and desserts. They also buy fresh corn there, which they serve on the cob or in a Finley Avenue Summer Salad. “Our overnight guests love our breakfast specialty.” Mrs. Powell said. “Holland prepares the best omelets ever. He always uses real butter or olive oil, sea salt and ground whole black pepper.” Their home is open and contemporary with lots of glass. The kitchen and dining room are one large room with the screened porch just a step away. They replaced their kitchen in 2008 with a contemporary European design, Venicia Tivoli by KraftMaid, working with kitchen designer Christine Hadley of Lowe’s in Leeds. “Christine was a great help in achieving the look we wanted. She covered all the details so that we achieved a practical design as well one that utilized the space beautifully. Her selection of natural stone backsplash was a stroke of genius.” The Powells sum up their entertaining this way — “Entertaining is more than a meal. It’s getting people together. Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 450 degrees. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix first 7 ingredients in medium bowl. Season mustard sauce lightly with salt and generously with pepper. Place salmon, skin side down, diagonally on prepared sheet. Spoon ½ mustard sauce atop salmon, then spread over, covering completely. Sprinkle salmon generously with salt and pepper. Roast, just until salmon is opaque in center, about 15 minutes. Using parchment as an aid, transfer salmon to platter. Cut crosswise into pieces and serve with remaining mustard sauce.

Warmer weather, market are driving real estate sales around Logan Martin
Realtors agree there is still longterm value in property investment.
Story by Chris Norwood Photos by Bob Crisp Although the debate on whether or not the national economy has bottomed out and is now on the mend or if we’re all in for a few more months of darkness, an apparent combination of increased confidence and low interest rates do seem to be boosting the health of the real estate market around Logan Martin Lake. And the arrival of warmer weather certainly doesn’t hurt. “We are definitely seeing an increase in lake home applications for both primary residences and second homes properties,” according to Keith Bice, a mortgage specialist with

Hometown Properties in Pell City. “The tendency that we are seeing is that rather than investing in the stock market, people are investing in the lake real estate market,” Bice added. “With the current economic conditions, people understand that long-term, real estate is always a good investment. That along with interest rates nearing all-time lows and with the warmer weather being here, interest is increasing throughout the area.” Maria Price of Remax Properties Unlimited concurs. “We have just stayed busy,” she said. “We are beginning to see an uptick, thankfully, in Continued on Page 56

sales of existing homes. We’re still handling some foreclosures, too. But things have picked up quite a bit, which I’m glad to see. I love this area. I grew up in Birmingham, but I’ve been here for 20 years, so I understand why people fall in love with it here. People are always going to want property near the water, and they’re also looking at foreclosed and commercial properties in the area again.” The one lagging area is new residential construction, according to Price. “There are no

speculative houses going up right now that I’m aware of, but good contractors are always going to be busy just because of the quality of their work and their reputations. So there is still plenty of work for them on renovations and custom jobs.” Although the pace of home sales is improving, prices have still not equaled the boom years, according to Sharon Thomas of Hometown Properties in Pell City.
The tax credit from the government may be one of the reasons Realtors are seeing an increase in business these days.

Communities close to the water with ammenities like club houses and pools are also becoming more popular. This one is at Fox Hollow.
“The prices are still lower than they were a couple of years ago, but movement and interest are picking up now. But then again, there is always going to be interest in lakefront property, especially this time of year. “The $8,000 tax credit that went into effect recently helps, too, so lots of people have been stopping by.” Thomas said her company is currently working on two speculative houses and has closed on five or six more in the Fox Hollow
development in Pell City. “It’s not on the water, but it is fairly close. Figures Thomas provided from the Birmingham Multiple Listing Service show 80 lake sales over the past 12 months compared to 98 for the previous year, but the current figure does not reflect several homes under contract which have not closed yet, and the best single month during that period was March 2009.
