October Lakeside focuses on creativity

From the editor… I have always admired people who can make things with their hands. They take a few pieces of wood, a hammer and nails, and it’s like magic, a cabinet appears. A stack of tile becomes a beautiful floor or backsplash. And a hole in the ground becomes a shimmering swimming pool. When I see their handiwork, I always respond, “All I know how to do is write checks.” But people like Laurie Massey know the value in turning vision into a creation with their own two hands. She turned an aging lakeside fishing cabin into a firstclass, cozy bungalow for vacation renters by doing some of the work herself. She is one of those creative souls who reap the rewards of creating something from that pile of wood or stack of tile. The same holds true for Lincoln’s Joey Callahan, whose three-story lakeside retreat is full of his handiwork. A cedar vanity with a distinctive, hammered copper basin is his creation, and the home features bead board and flooring salvaged from the old Lincoln Elementary School. Inside this month’s edition of Lakeside Living, we’ll take you inside both those homes, giving you a glimpse into lakeside paradises found with a little help from their owners’ creativity. Even our staff got to show off their creativity with the boat David Atchison and Elsie Hodnett built for the annual Float ‘Yer Boat cardboard regatta. It’s October. It’s Lakeside. 2009 Float ‘Yer Story by Elsie Hodnett Photos by Brian Schoenhals The participants floated with paddles poised above the water awaiting the signal, lifejackets on just incase their hopefully lake-worthy vessel wasn’t up to the task. The whistle sounded, the crowd cheered, and the 5th Annual Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta was under way. Most of the 18 entries floated their way out across the waters of Logan Martin Lake, but a few floundered and sank into its depths. Held at Lakeside Park in Pell City, the annual Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta drew hundreds of spectators. “We had a great turnout,” said Pell City Civitan Club President Blair Fields. The Civitan Club sponsored the event to raise funds for the Pell City Toys for Children Program. Fields said the annual regatta raises money to help provide toys and also badly needed clothes, shoes and diapers for children at Christmas. The Pell City Toys for Children Program helped more than 800 children last year. “We were glad to continue the regatta tradition when we took over the Pell City Toys for Children Program,” he said. “It went better than we expected.” Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta participants were required to paddle their crafts out from the Lakeside Park boat launch, around a buoy, and back to the boat launch. The heats were timed, with the fastest time declared the winner. There were five entries in the Youth Division. First Place was awarded to Hannah McBurnett’s “Water Rat” with a time of 1:55. Also in the Youth Division were Grant Stanley’s “Killer Croc” with a time of 2:11,

The Ship Shape Award, for the most creative boat design, was awarded to Eissmann Automotive’s “Floating Otto II.” The “Lovely Lady” Award, for the prettiest boat in the regatta, was awarded to Advanced Clinical Research’s “Damsel in Distress.” The Team Unity Award, for the most spirited and organized team (looks of the boat is not a factor here), was awarded to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church’s “Our Lady of the Lake.” The Team Attire Award, for the most creative team costumes, was awarded to The Daily Home’s “Lakeside Living Yellow Jacket.” The S.S. Minnow Award, which is awarded to the most spectacular sinking vessel, was awarded to St. Simon Peter Episcopal Church’s “Capurnium.”

Catering Polly Mitchell finds her calling in

Story by June Winters Photos by Bob Crisp Polly Mitchell loves cooking. She especially enjoys creating different foods and gourmet foods. But she was not always like that. “I discovered my passion for cooking about 15 years ago,” she said. Not that she hasn’t always enjoyed being in the kitchen. “After R.L. and I married, we discovered we both enjoyed entertaining, especially after we moved to the lake. I found myself preparing different hors de oeuvres, and my guests would love them. But it was not until I bought myself a Cake Bible that I really knew that cooking was the career I wanted.” Polly and R.L. own the Chevron station at the intersection of Talladega County 207 and Alabama 34, and she started her newfound career cooking in a kitchen in the back of the food mart. She still prepares food there, but now it is an upscale kitchen, with modern equipment. Polly only does large parties, and the more the merrier. One of her favorites was a wedding in Pell City with 600 guests at the reception. “It was outdoors, under huge white tents. We had two buffet lines with guests serving them-

selves on both sides. Polly said the menu consisted of shrimp and grits, caviar with an assortment of dips, smoked salmon, West Indies salad, and other dishes. “The hit of the party though was grilled vegetables. We had two cooks grilling a variety of vegetables on site, and the guests loved it. There were mushrooms, eggplant, squash and others. We served the vegetables with a variety of dressings.” There were two canoes filled with iced-down drinks and a variety of wines. “At this occasion, we took a lot of our kitchen equipment to the site. There was a large garage to set up in, and any time we can prepare food on site, I love it. It’s always fresh and hot.” Polly says the first step in getting ready to prepare for a wedding reception is finding out what the bride’s favorite foods are. “We always include those in the menu.” She remembers one bride’s favorite was potatoes. “We

did potatoes in several different ways,” she said. Polly also owns and operates Talladega’s Café Royale on the historic square. “We recently had a seated dinner birthday celebration and the honoree chose chicken Marbella for the entrée. We had that party at Cafe Royale, and I was surprised that we could seat 80 people comfortably in the café.” Beef bourguignon was the entrée at a recent black-tie fundraiser for St. Vincent’s Hospital. Polly loves preparing for cocktail parties, and some of the foods she enjoys preparing are sautéed blue crab claws, and caviar with dips. “My second favorite is fresh, boiled shrimp. I go to the coast and buy my own seafood so that I know it’s fresh,” she said. Polly knows the importance of presentation, and she has lots of unusual dishes in which to serve her food. “For instance, we recently served banana pudding for dessert at an

affair, and I served it in miniature martini glasses.” She loves serving scallops in a favorite bowl of hers. “It’s leaf-shaped, and the sauce goes underneath the scallops.” One of her signature desserts is Purple Glitter Chocolate Truffles, and a lemon blueberry delight is another specialty. Homemade cheesecake cut into a variety shapes is also a favorite and is served with a variety of toppings. The cheesecake is served from a container set over crushed ice. Polly has her own linens and is perfectly willing to have special ones made if the host desires. Of late, Polly has been focusing on the “Purse and Passion” event. It was held in the Beacon at Pell City First United Methodist Church Oct. 1. The sell-out event raised funds for the new women’s shelter, sponsored by the YWCA. “This is a first for Pell City “ Polly said, “but an event that has been held in many, many other places throughout the United States. She can’t say enough about her catering staff. “They are wonderful, and none of this could be possible without their dedication. I love them all.” Polly never neglects the place where her career first started. On Wednesday nights, she sells spaghetti, lasagna, pound cakes and hamburgers from the front of the Chevron Station. “People love our half-pound hamburger,” Polly said. “Eat one, and you’re hooked.” Polly has two Web sites coming up in midOctober. One will be pollyspicnic.com and the other will be caferoyalecatering.com.

Annual lakeside party takes on colorful flair

Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Brian Schoenhals When you’ve managed to put together a summer party for eight consecutive years, you must be doing something right. Stan and Linda Johnson appear to be doing everything right with their annual Pink Flamingo Party. The key is in its simplicity. Only one rule is in effect – wear pink clothing or wear clothing with a flamingo on it.

Johnson said the idea came about not long after he moved to the area and wanted to have an annual get-together with his friends. “We talked about it and one day we were over at the Birmingham Zoo and there were all these flamingos walking around, standing around talking, having a good time and everybody was happy, and I said, ‘That’s it. We’re going to have a Pink Flamingo Party.’”

The party started out with around 50 folks and has grown every year since. Johnson expected more than 120 people would have come and gone before the evening’s conclusion this year. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the dress is casual. Everyone brings their own lawn chair as well as their own beverages, if they so choose, and settles in under the tall pine trees of the Johnsons’ England Isle lakeside mobile home on the Lincoln side of the lake for a relaxing evening. The Johnsons set up tables under a tent on one side of the party area where people could contribute finger foods and appetizers for partygoers. The treats included all the tailgate classics, such as chips, dips, hotdogs, chili, fried chicken and some sweet desserts all served on paper plates. On the other side of the party area, several industrial-sized fans blew on the band as well as the party participants. But one thing those fans couldn’t cool is the hot classic rock tunes being

belted out by the Buddy Love Band when they got cranked up shortly after 6 p.m. The music included hits from the Black Crowes, Eric Clapton and Wilson Pickett. An inflatable pink flamingo stands in front of the band in case anyone forgets what party they are attending. Early in the evening, most guests just sit and eat and drink and take it all in, but later in the evening after courage has risen and inhibitions lowered, there’s no space to be found on the dance floor. One of the more interesting aspects of the party is partygoers arrive by both land and water. Several groups of people chose the water route and docked their boats on the Johnsons’ pier. Youths and adults are in attendance, and both seem to enjoy themselves. The

kids run around in a grassy area in front of the band, and the adults lounge in their lawn chairs behind the kids. The freshly mowed grass looks like a green carpet. Some people even brought their pets along, as a couple of dachshunds do some exploring in the area. Occupants of a neighboring mobile home sit on their porch and take in the spectacle going on below them. Johnson said the party has always been a summer kickoff bash in April, but circumstances forced the party to be pushed back to mid August this year. It seems to work just as well as a back-to-school bash. The relaxed party atmosphere combined with the magnificent view of the sun glistening on the lake water as it slowly sets behind the trees leaves those in attendance with a hope the Pink Flamingo Party lasts another eight years and beyond. “This is my thing. I threw away the golf clubs, and this is my party, my fun. I enjoy this every year. Everybody all year long asks, ‘When’s the next Pink Flamingo Party?’” Johnson said.

When Pell City’s Chris Deason and Sara Webb walked down the aisle this summer, it wasn’t a traditional wedding, but it was no less special. The couple had asked St. Clair County District Judge Robert Minor to officiate, and when they were deciding on the venue, “we offered up our backyard,” said Minor’s wife, Christy. Of course when your backyard fronts the main channel of Logan Martin Lake, silhouetted with a mountain view, the setting is ideal. The wedding party and guests donned casual attire – all in black and white. Iron pieces and plants loaned from Diane Seals at Collectors Showcase in Pell City set the scene. And white chairs in rows parted in the middle to create an aisle, turning the Minors’ backyard into an al fresco wedding chapel. With Zack Spann on acoustic guitar and three of Sara’s former students — Lake Minor, Connor McCombs and Cale Alverson — reciting a special poem called “Love,” the ceremony is sure to create a special memory for the couple and their guests for a long time to come. Only a gathering thunderstorm threatened the occasion. “Robert got the I do’s in right before the bottom dropped out. We were glad we got the ceremony in,” Mrs. Minor said. Luckily, the buffet was set up inside, and guests were able to celebrate the rest of the evening in the Minors’

home. When it was time for the couple’s send-off that night, it, too, was non-traditional. Joan and Ed Deason, Chris’ parents, decorated a boat with lights and affixed a “Just Married” sign to the rear. Guests held sparklers to light the newlyweds’ way to the boat, and the couple departed by water. And by all accounts, it made for a perfect ending to this lakeside wedding.

Logan Martin Lake is the backdrop for all kinds of fun, and September’s ArtScapes Fesitval and this month’s Lakeside Hospice Blues Fest and Car Show are two offerings no one should miss. Rain showers the day of the ArtScapes Festival Sept. 19 threatened the event, but a couple of dozen artists still loaded up their art and set up inside the park, where the skies cleared for a while and eventually, a little sun peeked through. The event is hosted by the Council of the Arts, but included artists not associated with the council as well. Basket work and painting, jewelry and glass work and many other art forms were part of the 2009 ArtScape Festival. hand-made jewelry, which features Swarovski crystals and intricate beading, and Carol Little offered baskets and t-shirts imprinted with her paintings along with note cards and other pieces. New this year, Linda Bassett of Pell City had her photographs taken while on trips around the world reproduced on note cards and mixed media paintings sculpted for a multi-dimensional effect. Fused-glass jewelry and pottery, decorative glasswork and functional pieces as well were also offered in the festival, along with hand-painted walking sticks and intricately detailed gourds and of course, lots of paintings, too.

LAKESIDE PARK Blues coming The Lakeside Hospice Blues Fest and Car Show is coming to Lakeside Park Oct. 10 and 11. Cars of all kinds, from show cars and muscle cars to motorcycles and antiques are expected, starting at 8 a.m., and music Saturday includes Roadhouse starting at noon followed by Randy Buell and the Persuaders and headliner Little G. Weevil at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, the festival features gospel and Christian music, and the event will get started at 11 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Arts and craftspeople are expected to be on hand both days along with a variety of offerings from food vendors. EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail. We debated whether we should paddle that early Friday afternoon because stormy weather surrounded us. “I’m going whether you go or not,” said Bobby McDaniel of Lincoln. McDaniel is in training, getting in shape to paddle the 631-mile plus Alabama Scenic River Trail, which spans from north Georgia to Gulf Shores. “I guess we’ll give it a try,” I said. We left Bobby’s place in Lincoln, located just across the old “Green Bridge” between Lincoln and Riverside, and headed down river. We were paddling one of the widest parts of Logan Martin Lake. I feared we could get caught in a storm while in the middle of the channel, but once we left the shore my fear subsided. In really bad weather, Logan Martin Lake can turn into an ocean, and it is a little worrisome in a small, narrow kayak. A kayak, it’s not like a boat with a big powerful engine strapped onto the back. It takes time to reach the shore, especially in this section of the lake between the Green Bridge and Riverside Marina. You have to cover a lot of water to cross from the Talladega to St. Clair County side of the lake. Bobby and I talked as we paddled down the river and about how distances are deceiving on the lake. Things appear a lot closer when paddling on the water. As we approached the I-20 bridge, which spans across Logan Martin Lake, we noticed large barges tied to the bridge. There was a truck on one of the large flat surface barges with an Alabama Department of Transportation logo on it. We wondered what ALDOT was doing around the pillars of the 40-year-old bridge, so after we got back from out trip, I called Gary Smith, the ALDOT district engineer for our area. ALDOT is apparently performing some foundation exploration around the I-20 bridge. ALDOT plans to widen the I-20 bridge from four to six lanes. “It shouldn’t be too far in the future, if funds become available,” Smith said. Plans for a new I-20 bridge have been on the drawing table for some time. The new bridge will have 10-foot shoulders, and ALDOT will first build a new middle section between the existing bridge. ALDOT will then tear down one section of the old bridge, like the eastbound section, and replace it, before tearing down the westbound section of the old bridge. One of the main reasons I called Smith was to find out why concrete steps led from the interstate down to the water’s edge. I thought it could have allowed access for the bridge builders of the past, or perhaps act as an emergency access to the water from I-20. “I really don’t know,” Smith said. “A lot of our old bridges have steps running down the slope. I never asked why.”

He said new bridge designs do not include steps. And access to the steps under the I-20 bridge is impossible. Vegetation is so thick near the side of I-20, the steps are barely visible. Because of highway hazards, people should not attempt to access the lake from those steps. “We don’t encourage people to use them anymore,” he said. Bobby and I paddled past the bridge, where several people were fishing from boats. When we turned at the bend toward Riverside Marina, we spotted two anglers from the bank. As we approached, Greg Layton of Birmingham hooked a really large bass. Even though I couldn’t see the fish, it was obvious the bass was a wall-hanger. “I’ll take your picture with that fish,” I yelled out at Layton. I spoke too soon. The fish broke loose. “Shoot,” Layton yelled. “Man.” Needless to say Layton was a little disappointed, but he reloaded his hook and began fishing again from the bank with his friend, Greg Seals of Birmingham. A lot of Birmingham residents travel along I-20, pull off the side and fish near the Riverside exit. Layton said he’s caught bass, bream and catfish from the spot he was fishing. He even hooked a big 35-pound catfish once there. I took a couple of pictures of the anglers, and Bobby and I headed down the river. From there it didn’t take us long to get to our final des-

tination, Riverside Marina. Alan Battle and his wife bought the marina in November 1995 and officially opened Jan. 1, 1996. Unfortunately, Alan wasn’t there at the marina when we arrived. Alan, who is originally from West End in Birmingham, is a great guy and a great talker. I wanted to stop at the marina to take a look at his designated Alabama Scenic River Trail Association camp. The camp is basically a place for someone traveling the 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail to stop and rest overnight before continuing their journey south. Fred Couch, president of the Alabama Scenic River Trail Association, said the non-profit group is always looking for new camp sites for paddlers navigating the trail, which encompasses six lakes and three rivers before ending in Mobile Bay at historic Fort Morgan, near Gulf Shores. “It’s a slow process,” Couch said. He said the group hopes to help establish camps 8-10 miles apart and are always looking for new designated sites. How one house was changed into something special

When you visit Joey and Nicole Callahan’s lakeside home in Lincoln, get ready for some interesting and innovative surprises. At first glance, it seems like a very pretty, onelevel brick house, with probably 2,500 square feet, three bedrooms, two baths, a living room and dining room and kitchen, most likely. That may be how it started out when they built their home in 2004, but since then, the house has evolved into a three-level home with “every inch of possible space” turned into living space, as Callahan puts it. The Callahans say it was when they had their son, Jackson, two years ago they decided to create more living space. They found their house plan online and worked with builder Kenneth Coppock and built it exactly like it was drawn, but added a downstairs that contains the same square footage as the ground level. When they decided to add on upstairs, they again

Coppock also built Mrs. Callahan’s parents’ house, and the Callahans say they have been entirely pleased with the outcome of their home. But Callahan himself has much of his own handiwork in the home, which now includes more than 5,000 square feet of living space. Mrs. Callahan, too, has put in her own creative talents in decorating and design throughout the home, and the couple both handled the extensive landscaping, taking care to choose certain trees and shrubs they are fond of. The front walk is bordered with red, knock-out roses and a shrub Callahan calls a “sweet shrub” because of its fragrance. There’s a Yoshino cherry tree, and front flower beds are dotted with bright daylilies and lantana.

Late summer blooms linger on a white crape myrtle, and just before you get to the front door, there’s a little rock garden with its own story. Callahan and his son collected the rocks during an outing one day, and Callahan told his son he wanted him to have some “pet rocks” like he had when he was growing up. Mrs. Callahan and her son painted and decorated the rocks, then decided they would make a nice addition to the front garden. There are two arches over the front porch, the trim is painted white against red brick. The porch is made of stamped concrete, matching the walkway that curves around to the rear of the house. Arched windows complement the arched porch, and the front door is inlaid with leaded glass. There is a pair of side lights, and the transom is set with the same leaded glass. Inside, a foyer opens into the dining room to the left, where a square oak dining table is used with carved back oak chairs, covered in a needlepoint style fabric. There’s a matching oak server, and a chandelier over the table is in an antique finish and set with six glass globes. Floor-to-ceiling arched windows look out on the front lawn. A series of three white columns border the dining room and foyer, and a two-sided fireplace serves both the dining room and living room.

The Callahans like the light the windows allow and chose not to interfere with the natural lighting by covering the windows with fabric or blinds. It’s also how they enjoy the broad view of Logan Martin Lake. Floors are 4-inch pine throughout the living and dining rooms and foyer. The living room is furnished with a burgundy leather couch with brass studs and a big cozy wingback chair covered in a burgundy and olive floral print. There’s a wood rocker in the room and a soft child’s chair just for Jackson. Oak side tables are used at each end of the couch. Family photographs, most taken by Mrs. Callahan, and many of them, naturally, of Jackson, are scattered throughout the room on tables and along the walls. Walls in living and dining rooms are a light cream with trim painted white. There’s a dining area alongside one wall between the kitchen and living room, and an

oak table with a story of its own is used there. “It’s a real ‘hog killing’ table,” Callahan tells with a bit of a laugh. “Nicole’s mother gave it to us,” pointing out deep marks made in the wood, evidence of its former use. Chairs covered in light floral fabric surround the table, set against a broad window looking out to the water. Entry to the kitchen is made from either end of a large work island set with a stainless steel sink and covered in black granite. The same granite is used for countertops, and cabinetry along the walls and on the island is oak. Fixtures are in brushed pewter, as are pulls used on drawers and cabinets. Appliances are all stainless and there’s a walk-in pantry placed inbetween countertops. At one side of the kitchen and living room is the master bedroom and bath, and at the other end of the house, two more bedrooms and a bath. The master bedroom has a lake view, and a massive oak king-size bed is covered with a white quilt with floral patches in green and rose. The Callahans found the bed while on a trip to the Amish countryside of Tennessee. A tall antique chest with intricate pulls is used in the room, which has double glass doors that open to the rear deck. Double doors also lead into the master bath, where oak vanities match cabinetry in the kitchen. A five-foot-by-fivefoot leaded glass window done in a scrolled design is set

all about Jackson, with one a designed play area complete with a large springy rocking horse and other fun toys, the other room houses a fire truck bed and Jackson’s collection of stuffed animal friends. The fire truck bed is not only decorative, but fitting as Callahan has been a Lincoln firefighter for 20 years. Going upstairs from a foyer that leads into the garage, a stairway edged with wrought iron ends on a landing that leads to a guest bedroom. There’s a custom-made wrought iron gate with childproof latches to keep Jackson out of danger at the top of the landing. The guest room has a lake view, and a bath across the hall is one of Callahan’s own pieces of handiwork and design innovations. Callahan crafted the massive mission-style chest used as a vanity for the bath, using solid cedar he found at Wayne Brasher’s saw mill in Talladega County. Callahan fit the piece with a hammered copper basin and Mrs. Callahan found a large mirror trimmed in wood that matches the chest. Walls in the bath are sage, and floor tile is a gray-green finish. Callahan formed the entry to the walk-in shower in an arched design, fitting pieces of the tile around the edges of the arch. The floor of the shower is covered with distinctive flooring made to look and feel like polished pebbles. From the landing, there’s a hall to an office area tucked

in the hallway and at the other end of the landing, another set of steps leads into a large den that runs the width of the house. Windows on one side look out over the lake. Sage carpet is used in the room, and an oversized chaise lounge and couch are covered with soft sage fabric. A large scrolled shelf holds a television and has space for family photographs. Walk across the den, and more steps – this time five down – take you to one of Callahan’s favorite parts of the house. The Callahans have made this room into a library for Jackson, and in it is flooring and bead board Callahan salvaged from the old Lincoln Elementary School, which was demolished after a new school was built. Callahan spoke with the salvage company about the wood, and when he learned it would be discarded, asked for permission to remove it. “I went through three layers of flooring to get to the wood,” he said. Callahan notes the former school floors are made of wood that his wife’s mother and father walked on as children. “I can just picture in my mind children going down the halls with this bead board and running a pencil or a ruler along it to make it click,” Callahan said. is vaulted. Callahan used the bead board along the walls, where there is shelving in two corners to hold Jackson’s books. The shelves also hold a collection of hand-made figurines, given to Jackson by a family friend, Larry Tuck. Tuck’s creations are of children’s favorite cartoon characters, and Jackson’s include Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Daffy and Daisy Duck, an M&M and even a reindeer. An antique student desk is in the room. The Callahan’s found it while shopping at the “world’s longest yard sale,” but Callahan doesn’t remember at what point along the yard sale they found it. The lower level of the Callahan’s house is accessed from the same hall that leads upstairs. Stairs lead into an entry to the movie room the Callahans created in the lower level, and walls are painted a deep blue. The floor is carpeted, with muted shades of blue and burgundy intermingled together. Large leather chairs and an oversized sofa face a large flat-screen television mounted on the wall, and speakers are placed on each side. The room opens at each end to the rest of the lower level. There’s a full bath downstairs. It’s handy for visitors to the Callahan’s pool and patio areas. The pool is another project in which the Callahans’ handiwork came into play. “My father dug it, and we put it in,” Callahan said.

The Callahans also laid all the stone used around he pool area. The lower level also has a living area, where white wicker seating is covered with floral cushions. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the lakefront. Adjoining the living area is the Callahan’s game room. There’s a full-size pool table, and walls in the room are done in a faux finish for texture and painted crimson. It fits in with Callahan’s “Roll Tide” inclinations. The Callahans used a pub table and chairs for seating in the room. Double glass doors lead to the patio underneath the deck, and Mrs. Callahan has reclaimed some vintage outdoor furniture, painting chairs in rainbow colors for he area. She repeated the color scheme with a cast-aluminum patio set used by the pool, painting chairs and the table in various colors and using a multi-colored umbrella above. She set the umbrella pole in an urn planted with blooming flowers that spill down to the patio. Mrs. Callahan grew up in Lincoln, and her husband, in Pell City. Their feeling about living on Logan Martin Lake is shared. “I always wanted to live on the water,” Mrs. Callahan said. “I love the water.” She credits her husband with finding the spot where they would build their lakefront home. “We love it here,” she said.

ART BY THE WATER Orville L. Stevenson turns vocation into art

Orville L. Stevenson has spent a lifetime learning his craft.

Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Brian Schoenhals If it can be done to a piece of metal, it’s more than likely Orville L. Stevenson knows how to do it. Blacksmithing is a craft he has spent the majority of his lifetime developing and perfecting. He went to work doing skill work for Buick in Flint, Mich., way back in 1966 after working for the company’s General Motors partner, Chevrolet, for three years.

“We made everything down there. We made street sweepers, bulldozer blades, and there ain’t a part on a car I didn’t do work on it. … Whatever came to us, we did it,” Stevenson said. He doesn’t use a lot of newfangled equipment to do his work. Most of it could probably be found in an antique store. His anvil was given to him by his father, and it dates back to the Civil War era. He also has a drill press dating back

Stevenson can craft just about anything in his shop, including this Christian Ichthus. to 1883. “They don’t make the new stuff like this,” he said. He just keeps the press well oiled, and it runs as well as the day it was made. He is able to make anything ranging from the practical to the artistic. In his and his wife Nancy’s home, there is a fabricated, 2-foot high set of white lilies as well as an antique style candle holder. In his shop he keeps a flower pot holder in the design of a mini wheelbarrow made up of colorful metal tubing. But he also has made most of his tools, such as hammers, nails, jigs, racks, grinder, tongs and many, many more things. Besides all of those items, he has pieced together elaborate candelabras, railing, hinges, gates, banisters, trellises

and more. He’ll make anything people ask him to make. He retired from GM in 1993 and made the move to the Lincoln area with Nancy. “We wanted low taxes and high temperatures,” Stevenson said after growing weary of shivering through Michigan winters. He does miss seeing the Northern Lights, though. By 2000, he had constructed his small shop a few yards away from the house, and it is filled top to bottom with his tools and equipment. The religious blacksmith has written across a ceiling beam, “If you would not do it in front of Jesus, do not do it here.” He said taking on new kinds of projects allows him to develop his blacksmith skills to a higher degree. “I’m still learning. You can come in with a job I’ve done before, and

I can do it pretty easy, or a simple job, I can do right off,” Stevenson said. He estimates he spends between 30 to 35 hours working in his shop during any given week. Disagreeing with the suggestion that blacksmithing is becoming a lost art, he said, “A lot of people say that, but there’s a lot of blacksmiths around,” Stevenson said. “How else are you going to get this stuff made? People come to me and want stuff, like that fireplace screen over there (pointing across the shop), you can’t buy them like I made it.” He enjoys making items you might find in antique shops the most. His fascination with history stretches beyond fabrication, he also participates in Civil War reenactments when he has some spare time. His craft is something not a lot of people know how to do, and it keeps him active and occupied. “It’s different,” Stevenson said. “Some people say, ‘You’re retired. She walked into the newly finished bathroom and pointed to a cabinet against the wall. “I made that cabinet,” said Laurie Massey of Pell City. The downstairs bathroom had brand-new bathroom fixtures and new ceramic flooring. In fact, this A-Frame home along Logan Martin Lake in Lincoln had a complete facelift inside and out. “Everything except the upstairs bathroom has been redone,” Massey said. “When I drove up to the front of the house, it was frightening, but the lot – what a beautiful piece of property.” The home, which is just north of the mouth of Choccolocco Creek along the main river channel of Logan Martin Lake, has a beautiful large stone fireplace next to a large open window with a view of the lake. “The fireplace works great,” Massey said. “We tried it out.” Massey said she hired a crew that completely remodeled the home in about four to five months. Rory Cochran made the finishing touches to the property by completing the outside landscaping. Workers added a driveway and a covered twocar carport at the front of the home, and a backyard patio was also added. Massey updated the small open kitchen with modern wooden cabinets, quartz counters and stainless steel appliances. A black metal spiral staircase leads upstairs to a small sitting room, bedroom and the home’s second full bathroom. The 1,100 square foot home is cozy – now. “It was a weekend lake cabin,” Massey said. “It didn’t even have a washer and dryer.” Massey did away with the old vinyl flooring and replaced it with hardwood floors. Siding and a new metal roof was added to the exterior of the home built in 1964. Massey also installed a new stacked washer and dryer that fit into a small closet space of the 2-bedroom home. The home has a large yard with a canopy of old, tall trees, providing plenty of shade during the hot summer months. The home also has year-round water and an old boat house that has a large flat concrete roof for entertaining and sunbathing. The home has about everything anyone would

want, but Massey is not ready to move into the home just yet. Instead, Massey has added the property to a growing list of short-term rental homes along Logan Martin Lake. “I’m surprised more people aren’t doing this,” she said. “There are probably 15-20 (short term rental houses along the lake.) To me, it’s a real untapped market for Birmingham.” She even has a Web site for it, www.blueriverrefuge. com. A nice home on the lake can offer a perfect spot for someone in Birmingham or Atlanta looking for a vacation spot to relax, swim and fish. “During the wintertime, it’s still beautiful here,” Massey added. “People can bring their boat and fish for a weekend.” She said people from the northern states also travel south to enjoy the warmer climates Alabama offers. Massey said she’ll rent her house out by the day, weekend, week or month. “Not a lot of people realize they can make money from their lake home,” said Nancy Locklar, a Realtor for REMAX Properties Unlimited in Lincoln. “Snowbirds want short-term rentals,” Locklar said. Locklar said she knows people who “can’t give away their RVs,” and more people are looking for short-term rental homes for their vacation, avoiding renting out those big gas guzzlers. “We’re trying to add houses to our short-term rental property,” Locklar said. She said REMAX Properties Unlimited sort of fell into the short-term rental market. People considering moving to the area want to spend some time around the lake before making their final deci-

sion for the big move, Locklar said. “People like to spend a few days here and see what it’s like,” she said. “There are people who have been doing it (renting out their lake homes) for a while.” Some people just don’t want to give up their lake home, so they rent it out to help subsidize their house payments. Locklar’s real estate office manages four rental properties and one condominium. The location is ideal, she said. Logan Martin Lake is centrally located between Birmingham and Atlanta. It is also close to the Talladega Superspeedway, which holds two races each year, drawing hundreds of thousands of people to the area. She also said Logan Martin Lake is known for its excellent bass fishing, and the lake attracts many fishing tournaments and anglers who just want to fish on a different lake. Locklar said with the downturn in the economy, many lake residents are renting their homes instead of selling them, waiting for the economy to improve. “If you have a house, we can lease it out for you,” Locklar said. “It’s becoming a growing thing here.”
