e’re here! It’s officially 2013 and as we roll right into another new year, we’re hoping for health and happiness for all. Just because it’s a little cold outside doesn’t mean there aren’t cool things going on in and around Logan Martin Lake. We’ll take you to the home of Ben and Denise Thackerson in the Cropwell area of the lake where the Thackersons love spending the warm weather season as well as the colder times of the year at their lakeside home. Then you’ll meet Willie Howard, a real entrepreneur with all he has going on in Lincoln. He’s the proud proprietor of not only Willie’s Wings and Things where you can get your fill of all kinds of great things to eat, but you can also visit his car wash, his barber shop and oh yeah, he’s also a minister and you can get a little food for the soul while you’re there as well. As I mentioned earlier, the lake life doesn’t completely stop during the winter months. We found the group who calls themselves “Shirley and the Streetwalkers,” and tell you about their distinctive and adventuresome outings around the lake in the Logan Martin Lake in the Woods neighborhood. They’re a fun bunch, and if you wanted to join them for their frolics, I have a feeling you’d be most welcome. I’m bringing you some favorite drink recipes sure to ward off a winter chill. Some are “libacious,” some aren’t, but I can tell you they’re all awfully good! You’ll meet artist Karen Henson, a lake dweller herself who finds lots of inspiration for her paintings in the scenic spot she calls home. We’ll also give you an update on the upcoming Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Wild Game Cook-Off, it’s set for Feb. 16 and if you’re interested in competing, you have until Feb. 14 to enter. It takes place at Talladega Superspeedway and is a 4

fundraiser for the AWF. Attending gives you the opportunity to taste entries from about 30 cooking teams and enjoy lots of other fun things will be going on, too. So toss another log on the fire, mix up a batch of one of my drink recipes and enjoy this first issue of Lakeside Living, 2013! We hope to deliver lots more stories of the people, the places and the things to do on Logan Martin Lake throughout the year!

illie Duran Howard is an extremely busy man. In addition to being the founding pastor of New Vision Fellowship Christian Church, he also works as a barber. Then he bought a car wash next door to his barber shop. And now, he’s in the restaurant business, operating Willie’s Wings and Things in another building on the same property in Lincoln. The restaurant has been open for about 15 months now, and has drawn a following locally. “A restaurant is always something I’ve had a desire for,” Howard said. “I wanted to do it for myself, for my family, my mother and my kids. I enjoy trying to maximize the moment, trying to get the most out of life. And I’m also trying to figure out ways to help people. So yeah, it all keeps me pretty busy, but that’s a blessing.” The combination of businesses all made sense to him. “People come into the barber shop on their lunch break to get a haircut and ask me to hold a spot for them while they go get something to eat, or they come in after getting off work and they’re hungry. Now, you

can get a haircut, get your car washed and eat a meal all in the same place.” Wings are available in his signature sweet heat flavor, as well as mild, medium, hot, extra hot, honey barbecue and lemon pepper flavors. They also come mini-sized, full sized and whole wings.

Pastor Willie Howard with a Bible in one hand, a plate of wings in the other and a barber pole behind him, representing the church he pastors, the restaurant he runs and the barber shop he owns. His car wash is not pictured.

A 10 piece mini-wings order is $5.50, with 20 wings for $10, 30 for $13.50, 40 for $16 and 40 cents apiece after that. Regular size wings are six for $4.99, 12 for $8.99, 18 for $12.99 40 for $22 and 55 cents each after that.

Whole wings are $4.75 for five, $9 for 10, $12.75 for 15, $16 for 20 and $1.25 each after that. Each of the above items comes with ranch dressing, a celery stick and tortilla chips. You can get a dinner plate special consisting of January 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 7

four whole wings, two sides, cake and desert for $7, and four whole wings with fries for $5. Although wings are the focal point, the name of the restaurant is, after all, “Wings and Things,” and there are certainly plenty of other things on the menu. These include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, club sandwiches, catfish filet sandwiches, bologna, bacon, lettuce and tomato, chicken tender sandwiches, grilled cheese, hot dogs with your choice of chili, kraut or slaw, bratwurst sausage dogs, rib sandwiches, barbecue pork sandwiches, and the scramble burger, which Howard describes as being similar to a Sloppy Joe, but with a special sauce and cabbage. You can also order a whole or half slab of ribs, a pound of barbecued pork, a loaded baked potato with pork and whole or half Boston butts. There’s also a barbecue salad, as well as a house 8

salad, chef salad and chicken salad. Appetizers include fried pickles, nachos and cheese and bacon bit cheese fries. Side items are fries, fried okra, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, baked potatoes and home cut fries (a customer request). Fried green tomatoes are available in the summer. There is a daily lunch special consisting of a meat and two vegetables for $5.99. The dinner plate comes with a meat, drink and dessert. 10

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - January 2013

Speaking of dessert, Howard has cheesecake, lemon pound cake, pecan pie and his own “made from scratch” red velvet cake. Those who are lake bound for a get-together can easily arrange for take out to take care of a crowd. Although he likes the convenience, Howard there has been some talk about finding a more prominent location. “I’ve got dreams,” he said. “This is only the beginning.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

Traveling the Coosa

A flock of coots looked like they were enjoying the water and warm sunny weather.

Another ‘What a Day’ on Logan Martin Even in the winter months, there’s lots of fun to be had Story and photos by DAVID ATCHISON

I

could not have picked a better winter day to paddle, because it felt like early spring, but that’s still a ways off. The temperature was in the mid 60s, and it was a clear sunny day. Although I paddle in all types of weather conditions, it’s nice to have a warm sunny day to complete a paddle trip in the middle of winter. Before taking my trip on this Friday morning, I stopped by the new Veteran’s Home in Pell City. My father, who lived with my wife and me for the past year, is now living there. “Pete” is a retired World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was already in the Navy before the start of World War II. He survived the entire war but had several close calls.

12

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - January 2013

He said his ship left Pearl Harbor to pick up supplies on the West Coast just prior to the surprise attack by the Japanese. My wife, Laura, jokes with Pete, who is turning 91 in the next couple of weeks, about him being “like a cat with nine lives.” He’s had several close calls with death, both in and out of the service. All I can say is my dad really thinks he’s fortunate to be at the Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home. He really likes it there, and everyone at the home is so nice and professional and really care about our veterans. Our local and state officials really need to be commended for helping make this facility a reality. If you ever get a chance to tour the facility, do so. It is

unbelievable. The VA Home is something everyone, especially our local communities, can be proud of. Anyway, dad and I had sort of “progress report” meeting with the people who are looking after him. After the meeting, I headed out on my lakeside trip. By the time I got to General Lee, the temperature had warmed up considerably. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to paddle. There was little wind, and the water was calm. I paddled toward the main river channel, crossing a big slough next to General Lee Marina. As I was crossing the slough, I heard what I thought was a chainsaw, but later realized it was a power tool, drill. Construction workers were building a new home along the lake. It was about then I noticed smoke, a lot of smoke, on the far end of the slough. I heard voices, and decided to investigate. It was nothing major, it was just Nico and Linda Ricottone doing their winter clean-up on the lake. They were raking and burning the leaves in their yard. I paddled up and Linda asked, “Well, how are you today.” “I’m fine,” I said. “Well, if you are that good, why don’t you get out and help?” she said. I laughed. A young German Shepard dog came bouncing down to the water to get a closer look at me and my boat. The young pup actually wanted to jump on top of my kayak for a little ride.

It was the next door’s neighbor’s dog. Honey. The Ricttone’s dog also came down to the shore line for a closer look. “I just told my husband that I have a new found respect for firefighters,” Linda said, as the thick white smoke turned toward them. “I love the shade, but I hate the leaves. It’s a big job cleaning up all these leaves when they start falling.” Nico and Linda were taking a short break from their work when I arrived. The couple have lived in the Rose Mobile Home Community for about five years. Linda has family in the Pell City area, but the couple lived in Denver. “I have a daughter there, but the rest of the family is here,” she said. Linda said she and her husband love lakeside living. “You cannot help but like the view,” she said. “It’s peaceful, and quiet.” I visited just for a little while, I knew they had to get back to work, so I said my good-byes and headed to the small island I’ve wanted to explore. Actually I want to camp there, but first wanted to see if it was suitable for an overnight stay. From what I could tell, it is perfect for an overnight stay, just enough room for a couple of backpackers/kayakers. With that said, it did have some trash on it. I wish more people would practice “Leave no trace” when camping. Pack out what

you take. I will probably try and take a big trash bag and do some cleaning if I decide to camp on the island. It wasn’t a big mess, but it needed some attention. After scouting the island, I headed back to General Lee and, lo and behold, about the time I pulled into the boat launch Marvin Hughes, 65, of Pell City pulled into the camp. “It’s so nice, I figured it would be wrapped up with people today,” Marvin said. “I only saw 2 or 3 boats.” And Hughes went all the way down to Logan Martin Dam. I was also a bit surprised at the absence of boat traffic. I only saw one bass boat zipping down the lake. Marvin said, “You might not remember me.” Then he told me how and when we had met – on the lake. He and his grandson, Chris, were setting out trotlines to catch some catfish. I remembered. It was during the winter, one or two years ago. Time flies when you are having fun and I have a hard time keeping up with it these days. The last time we saw each other the weather was brutal. It was freezing cold, and the wind was relentless. I could barely talk to Marvin, because the wind kept moving my kayak away from them. “It was a rough day,” Marvin recalled. “It was cold this morning. I waited to about 10 before I jumped out here.” 14

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - January 2013

He talked about his grandson, Chris Carroll, proudly. Since I last saw them, Chris graduated from college and was called to the ministry. He said Chris wants to be a youth minister and is looking for his first church. Marvin normally fishes or puts out trotlines with his wife, Wanda. “Me and my wife fish two, three nights a week,” he said. “The grandkids have been sick all week, so she’s up there (in Riverside).” Because of medical problems, he said his wife doesn’t like for him to be out on the water alone, but Marvin really enjoys fishing for catfish. His biggest catch is a 65-pound Blue Catfish he caught on Jordan Lake. The biggest cat he’s caught on Logan Martin Lake was a 54-pounder. “That was a big fish,” he said. Marvin and I talked for a while, but had to part ways. I needed to try and get home before dark – didn’t make it – but that’s OK. And I look forward to getting back on the lake, maybe that island I explored, so until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Dish It Up! With Lakeside

Coffee with a Kick

Great Ways to Warm Up Try these concoctions to ease the chill Story and Photos by

LAURA NATION-ATCHISON

Y

ou’ve likely already made your new year’s toasts, whether it was a little champagne or some sparkling punch, but I have some beverage ideas this month to warm up with, whether you’re entertaining for a group or just settling down by yourself on a cold winter’s night. Some involve a little libation, some don’t, and they could all be altered to taste. I find them great for any kind of get-together, whether it’s lunch or brunch, an afternoon playing cards with friends or just to sit and relax with yourself. I’ll start with my most favorite, it doesn’t really have a name,

16

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - January 2013

at least as far as I know. A friend and I were experimenting with drink concoctions one day and it just happened. Coffee with a Kick What you need: Fresh hot coffee of your choice (I don’t use flavored, but it might be interesting!) A good “shot” of Frangelico (For those unfamiliar with this liquor, it’s an Italian invention flavored with hazlenut) A good “shot” of a coffee flavored liquor Top with a blob of whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg(This part is imperative to the taste!)

We look forward to seeing you at the Birmingham Boat Show Jan 24th – 27th

Butterscotch Coffee

What you need: Eight cups unsweetened apple juice Three tablespoons Imperial Sugar/ Dixie Crystals Granulated Sugar One medium lemon, thinly sliced Three cinnamon sticks Pineapple juice concentrate Six whole allspice Six whole cloves Four cups lemon-lime soda

What you need: One cup butterscotch chips, divided Eight cups hot brewed coffee ½ cup half and half Five to eight tablespoons sugar (Maybe Splenda would be better…) Canned whipped cream topping

What you do: Melt ½ cup of the butterscotch chips in the microwave and stir until smooth. Cut a small hole in the corner of a pastry bag or plastic bag and insert a #4 round tip. Fill with the melted chips. Pipe eight garnishes onto a waxed paper lined baking sheet and refrigerate about 10 minutes or until set. (I just used the chips to garnish-too lazy for all that, but it’s pretty!) In a large pitcher, stir coffee and remaining butterscotch chips together until chips are melted. Stir in cream and sugar and pour into mugs. Top each with whipped cream and the butterscotch garnish. Apple Lemon Cider

What you do: In a large saucepan, combine the apple juice, pineapple juice concentrate, sugar and lemon slices. Place the cinnamon sticks, allspice and cloves on a double thickness of cheesecloth, bring up the corners of the cloth and tie with kitchen string to form a bag, then add to pan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes. Discard spice bag. Stir in lemon-lime soda, cook for four to six minutes or until heated through, but do not boil. Makes three quarts. (I added a lemon rind twist to mine for garnish and served with sliced apples.) After Dinner Mocha White Chocolate

Café Amore (Or French Connection Coffee) What you need: Equal parts (one ounce each) of cognac of your choice and Amaretto Fresh brewed coffee

What you do: Pour cognac and Amaretto into cup Fill with coffee Top with whipped cream Garnish with slivered toasted almonds The “right” way to make Irish Coffee (Remember, I’m all Irish!) What you need: The best Irish whiskey you can get Fresh whipped cream, which always is a step above the pre-made versions Brown sugar

What you do: Pour whiskey into serving mug, add coffee and one tablespoon brown sugar and stir well. Float the cream on top.

What you need: One and a half cups two percent milk Three ounces white baking chocolate, chopped Two tablespoons instant coffee granules One teaspoon vanilla extract Toppings: Whipped topping and baking cocoa-chocolate chips are great, too!

What you do: In a small saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until bubbles form around the side of the pan, but don’t boil. 18

Place the remaining ingredients into a blender, add hot milk, cover and process until mixture becomes frothy. Serve in mugs, top with whipped cream and cocoa if desired. Makes two servings.

Henson said that she paints from pictures and will usually keep two or three paintings going at the same time, and that it takes about six to eight hours to complete a painting. “I can’t sit down at a blank canvas,” Henson said. A Perfect Place for a Getaway The Thackersons love their not too big, not too small lakehouse By EMILY ADAMS Photos by BOB CRISP

T 24

hey weren’t looking to buy anything in particular, in fact, they weren’t looking to buy anything at all. But when Ben and Denise Thackerson came

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - January 2013

upon their lakefront home five years ago this month, it didn’t take them long to decide they were in the market. “We were just driving around looking for maybe a lot

Ben and Denise Thackerson

or a mobile home in the area, and instead of making a left, we made a right and came down here,” Denise said. “The owners had just put a little 2x4 ‘for sale’ sign on the fence, so we turned down the driveway and saw that it was a house. We didn’t even know it was here.” They looked around the roughly one-acre lot and loved what they saw, but didn’t know if they could afford a house. The couple called the owners right away for more information. “The owners lived in Birmingham, and they came down and met with us, and we gave them an earnest money check that day,” Denise said. “Somebody pulled up the

driveway behind us while we were looking, so we knew we had to get it first.” The 1,100 square foot house instantly drew them in with its quiet charm and log cabin feel. Not too big, not too small – it was more than they imagined in a place to get away. “It’s a good location and a good neighborhood,” Ben said. “It’s quiet.” “We were very happy when we found it,” Denise said. “It’s not a big place, but it’s a good size for us. We spend a lot of time here in the summer, and we sometimes come in the fall and spring. We have really enjoyed having it.” January 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 25

The Thackersons saved a big chuck of change by sponge-painting the yellow kitchen countertops and backsplash with green paint. The paint has lasted five years without chipping, Denise said.

Along with the usual perks of the lake, their house is located near Lelola, a mobile home neighborhood owned by Ben’s sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Garland Brock. The close proximity makes family gatherings easy and fun. “We came up and visited Ben’s sister in the summers for a long time, so it’s is a really convenient location for us,” Denise said. “We can walk to her house from here. It worked out well.” Perhaps the best attribute of the home for the couple is its calm neighborhood and typically quiet slough. Even in the summer, Ben said their slough sees fairly little traffic aside from the occasional boat full of Camp Cosby campers. That gives the Thackersons plenty of opportunities to rev up their pontoon boat or Jet Ski, or 26

even get some exercise on the paddle boat. “We do all the lake activities,” Denise said. “We swim and we go out on the boat, but then we also like to just sit on the deck and look out at the water. It’s so peaceful and relaxing, and we watch the birds go by.” The couple’s two daughters also find use for the house. Their oldest daughter, Brooke, is a cheerleader sponsor in Clay and usually brings her squad for a weekend of fun, and both Brooke and their younger daughter, Lauren, who is in her final year of pharmacy school at Auburn University, keep their dogs entertained on the lake. When they are inside the house, however, the family enjoys an open kitchen and living room area, two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. The house has hardwood floors and slanted ceilings throughout, adding

kitchen. “One of the past owners, yellow was her favorite color, so everything in here was yellow,” Denise said. “The lights, the stove hood, the countertops, even the knobs on the cabinets were yellow daisies.” Denise and Ben replaced the light fixtures and put in a stainless steel stove hood and silver knobs on the cabinets. A do-it-yourself project on the countertops and backsplash saved them lots of money and has also lasted longer than they expected, Denise said. “We sponge-painted them this green color,” she said. “It was going to cost so much to put in a new countertop, 30

so for about $60, we bought the paint and just kind of rolled it and sponged it. That was when we first moved in, and it’s lasted. We thought we’d be having to re-do it.” A fireplace ties the kitchen and living room space together. The living room is fitted with a couch and chairs and a flatscreen TV. Windows in the space that are mirrored across the back side of the house give a straighton view of the water, which Denise said goes a long way in making the house feel bigger than it is. “I can look out from kitchen and see the lake, so even though it’s small, it seems big when you have that great view,” she said.

Lake-themed decorations are seen throughout the house, including this sign, a paddle and a map of the lake.

They changed relatively little in the bedrooms and bathrooms. One bedroom, painted a bright blue, is reserved for family guests, while the other serves as the master. Denise said they called on a professional company they had used before to create blinds for all the windows in lieu of curtains. “I’m just a blinds person,” she said. “We put blinds everywhere so I don’t have to worry about it, and it stays simple.” Outside, they put on a metal roof and added azaleas, ferns and other landscaping that is far from its peak at this time of year, but makes a beautiful yard in the summer, Denise said. A wraparound deck gets a lot of use, and has seating and tables facing the lake. Also in the backyard is a location made for an RV, but the Thackersons keep a picnic table there instead, though they do enjoy the water and power hookups. “We enjoy it here,” Ben said. And that, indeed, seems to be the sentiment for most every lakeside dweller.

S

hirley Ferguson along with her fellow “Streetwalkers,” Patsy Rogers, Leigh Ann Sims and Daricer Shoemaker, walk the streets of Talladega’s Logan Martin Lake in the Woods neighborhood to help their bodies, their minds and their community. 32

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - January 2013

The foursome walks together five days a week, traveling almost four miles each day. The ladies talk, pray and pick up trash as they walk through the neighborhood where Ferguson and Rogers reside. “We try to solve the world’s problems,” Shoemaker said.

The walking group began when walking partners Ferguson and Rogers reached out to Sims and Shoemaker, who they work with in the library of Hepzibah Baptist Church. Sims and Shoemaker accepted their invitation, and, in September, began driving to the Lake in the Woods neighborhood each weekday to walk and talk with them. Sims says the strolls through the community are “very therapeutic.” She said exercising with her friends helps her “physically, mentally and spiritually.” Rogers also says that the Streetwalkers’ routine is beneficial to her health. She says the walks, along with a good diet, have helped her lose a few pounds. Ferguson said all the ladies have exercise equipment in their homes, but prefer the company and the scenery that comes along with their outdoor walks along the lakeside neighborhood. “You don’t have to go to the gym,” Ferguson said. “Just grab a neighbor and get out there.” The group talks about church, family and food on the walks. They also help each other plan family outings, church gatherings and school projects. Shoemaker says she enjoys the closeness the group shares as they make their way through the neighborhood. She says it’s a place where she and the others can “talk things out, without being judged.” “It’s good to get another opinion,” she said. Ferguson says that what the ladies talk about is never repeated. “What is said on the street stays on the street,” she said. The ladies also appreciate the accountability that comes with walking with a group. They feel it is much easier to stick to the routine when friends are there to push one another. “And if you don’t show up, the others will talk about you,” Sims joked. Sims said that the group has to keep Ferguson on track, as she will try to cut the walk short. She calls Ferguson the group’s “wayward child.” “I can worm my way out of it with Patsy,” said Ferguson. “I can’t get away with it with the whole group here.” While Ferguson sometimes lags behind, she is motivated by the leaders of the group, Sims and Rogers. “They lead the pack,” said Ferguson. Rogers said she enjoys the walks because she “loves being outdoors.” She said she enjoys nature, as well as the dogs that usually accompany them. She talks fondly about Princess, Ed Smith’s dachshund; Corky, the one-eyed beagle; and the very vocal Prince, who yaps at them almost daily. “We have great escorts,” Rogers said. Ferguson says that Rogers runs a “halfway house” for the neighborhood dogs. It is not uncommon for one of the dogs to follow Rogers home, get a bath and even spend the night. “I just love the dogs,” said Rogers. The ladies don’t always stick to the routine, however. They stop several times during each walk to talk to neighbors, they

often wander out into the woods and sometimes, they even “raid” the gardens of their neighbors. Ferguson and Rogers say they will sometimes sneak over to the home of the Tinsleys in the neighborhood and pick some of their turnip greens. They also joke about setting up a fund to pay for all the vegetables they’ve taken from the Vincent family’s garden. “We have wonderful neighbors,” said Ferguson. The Streetwalkers get into all sorts of adventures during their time together. They decorate the mailboxes of their neighbors, they care for the neighborhood’s dogs and they’ve even been known to finish off a good walk with an impromptu jump in the lake. One day in October, the ladies had just finished walking, when they all decided to empty their pockets, take off their socks and shoes and go for a swim. They all agree that was one of the most enjoyable days they have spent together. They say that they plan to turn the leap into the lake into an everyday thing when the weather gets warmer. The ladies say that they have tried to get their husbands to join them on the walks, and in the adventures, but to no avail. But, they all agree that having the men join them would “probably just ruin it anyway,” and just laugh it off. These gals’ get-togethers are filled with good-hearted fun, fellowship and an appreciation for friends, the beautiful lakeside territory they cover and combining exercise with so many other good things.

ison Stew and Seafood Chowder are only two of many unique dishes to tantalize the taste buds at this year’s Alabama Wildlife Federation/Alabama Army National Guard Wild Game Cook-off. “We are looking forward to this year’s cook-off and are hoping for 30-plus cook teams,” said Tommy Tidwell, Wild Game Cook-off Coordinator for the Alabama Wildlife Federation. The Eighth Annual Alabama Wildlife Federation/Alabama Army National Guard Wild Game Cook-off at the Talladega Superspeedway is Saturday, Feb. 16. The cook-off takes place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Garage. Gates open at 3 p.m. Track 34

rides are available for $25 for those who purchase their tickets in advance. Track rides are $40 the day of the event. “The Talladega Superspeedway has been great to us again this year, and the first 40 teams to sign up and pre-register will get four tickets per team to both the Saturday and Sunday spring races at the Superspeedway,” he said. Tidwell said teams must register by Thursday, Feb. 14 to receive the race tickets. Cook teams may still sign up to participate until the day of the event. Entry for the cook teams is free. For Bobby and Diane Smith, this isn’t their first wild game

and you could also substitute ground beef for bison and cook it at home.” Diane said she picked Seafood Chowder as her entry. “We combined different chowders to come up with one we really liked,” she said. “It’s an easy recipe and you can tweak it to your taste by substituting your favorite seafood. The simmering is the key, because it blends the flavors together.” The Smiths said they look forward to competing this year. “We want to encourage everyone to come out, taste great food and support the Alabama Wildlife Federation,” Diane said. The cook-off starts at 4 p.m., with awards presented to the winners about 6 p.m. The event features live entertainment, raffles, youth activities and a silent auction that includes wildlife prints, sports prints including Auburn and Alabama, gift-type items, hunting and fishing trips with celebrities, items geared toward outdoor enthusiasts, ladies’ items and more. All proceeds benefit the Alabama Wildlife Federation. Tidwell said the event usually raises close to $20,000, which goes into conservation programs throughout the state. Cooking teams may include groups, a couple or a single individual. A team may represent a corporation, restaurant or simply be a local cook. Teams may have up to four members, and all four members will receive a one-year complimentary AWF membership. The cook-offs are a celebration of game animals, game birds 36

and game fish that can be harvested and utilized for food. “Wild game” is defined as fish, fowl or game that can be found in the wild of North America. Teams are strongly encouraged to utilize fish, fowl or game they have harvested themselves, or has been harvested by other hunters and anglers. However, use of fish, fowl or game species that are also commercially available does not result in disqualification. Trophies are awarded for first, second and third place in three categories: fish, fowl and game. There is also an award for “Best Overall.” Teams may enter up to one dish in each regular category, but a single team can only win first place in one category. If a team’s highest scoring dish wins one of the three categories, it is in the running for “Best Overall.” The award for “Best Overall” will go to the cook team with the highest scoring individual dish, judged on taste and originality with taste weighing more heavily. The “Best Overall” winner earns the right to compete for the title “State Champion” at AWF headquarters in Millbrook at the end of the season. Teams are asked to provide samples for up to four judges and to provide people attending the cook-off with at least 50-75 bitesize samples of any dish entered into the judging competition. If it is determined a team does not fulfill this requirement, they will be disqualified. A “Best Presentation Award” will go to the cook team with the

best decorations and presentation for their cook team area that best reflects the atmosphere of a “Wild Game” cook-off. Scoring is separate from and has no impact on dishes submitted to the food judges. The Alabama Army National Guard is the title sponsor and will award a special “People’s Choice” award, which is voted on by the general public. Judging takes place prior to the event opening to the public at a time determined by the local committee. The AWF will provide one six-foot or eight-foot table, tablecloths, small Styrofoam plates, Styrofoam sample cups, sporks, toothpicks, paper towels, Styrofoam bowls, food handler gloves, “Clorox water,” a jug of cold water, a cooler with ice, AWF hats and aprons for up to four participants and a team sign. Cook-off teams are responsible for bringing additional items, if necessary for their entry, such as a grill, smoker or other cooking device, warmer such as a large pot or chafing dish with heat source, charcoal/propane or other fuel and matches, small generator, serving utensils and chairs and additional tables if needed. Some power is available at most cook-offs, however teams are asked to limit power needs and let AWF staff know if power is needed. Complete team guidelines are available online at www. alabamawildlife.org. Participants may register online or by calling 1-800-822-9453. For more information, call Tommy Tidwell at 1-800-822-9453.

A PASSION for Architecture Nicole Anderson sees her work as a ministry Nicole Anderson By MARK LEDBETTER

W

ith a passion for architecture and houses, Nicole Anderson has helped many first-time buyers find just what they needed in a home. “I love my job,” Anderson said. Originally from Fort Payne, Anderson graduated from University of Alabama at Birmingham. It was while she lived in Gulf Shores, however, that she developed an interest in real estate as she observed condo development and saw the opportunity for growth. Anderson said she has found her job rewarding by meeting people and developing relationships with clients after the sale. She said she even received calls and cards from several after recent surgery, and some brought food. Working with many first-time buyers, Anderson focuses upon providing them with a realistic view of what is involved in purchasing a house. She provides them with the steps they need to go through and points them in the right direction. “They enjoy the house hunt, which can be fun and rewarding,” she said. There have been obstacles, Anderson said, she and others in the real estate market have had to overcome that included the economic downturn. She said, however, she see has seen improvements in recent months. “The economy is constantly changing for us,” Anderson said. “We have to learn more and keep up with the changes.” Foreclosures have had an adverse affect on new house construction because appraisal of many foreclosures is less than 46

the cost of new construction, she said. The last four months, however, she said she has seen an increase in appraisals and consumer confidence is up. Anderson has other passions other than realty that have shaped her life. She is a Zumba instructor who teaches twice a week at the Pell City Civic Center. Zumba is an outlet for her passion for dance. Anderson began dancing at age 4 and competed nationally at age 7. She began teaching dance at 14 and when she returned to Pell City, and before becoming a realtor seven years ago, she taught dance at the Pell City Performing Arts Center. Active in a local church, she believes both selling real estate and teaching Zumba are ministries. “You do what you can do whether it is getting people into a house or getting them in shape,” she said. Anderson is also active in the local chapter of the Pell City Business and Professional Women and volunteers for many activities in Pell City. Anderson was named 2010’s Realtor of the Year and served as president of the St. Clair Association of Realtors in 2012. Anderson is a member of The Realty Pros Team in Pell City with offices located at 418 Martin Street S. She can be reached by calling her office at 205-884-0400 or by cell phone at 205-753-0225.
