From the Editor...

A

re you geared up? Are you on the verge of getting out the outdoor furniture, sweeping off the patio and decks and declaring that…”it’s time?” I can tell you right now that’s exactly where I am, and it won’t be long before I’m outside jamming petunias and pansies into pots and picking daffodils and dusting off my lounge chairs for some serious time outdoors. It’s that time of year for getting ready for another season of real lake time and getting the very best of all there is to lakeside living…again. Our friend Mother Nature has held us off a bit this year, but even if there’s another little “spell” or two coming our way as far as the cold goes, we all know deep down that this threat will be very over very soon. So as we enter the spring season of 2014, I know there will be lots of getting busy and getting down to the things we love the best. Getting out on the water, getting wet, dawdling along the shorelines and, well, just greeting another dose of celebration in our little piece of paradise. In my kitchen pursuits this month, I starting thinking about things on the lighter side that we can have on hand for early get-togethers, something we could whip up or pull out from the freezer when time is of the essence and we need a handy little something that will work for breakfast, brunch, a special snack for friends who stop in because of the nicer weather, things like that. So with all these things in mind, it hit me-breads. But not just the kind that accompany a meal, the kinds of breads that can be served for lots of occasions, and I ended up with some real winners. I think the Orange Pecan Bread was a true treat and was one I’d never run into before, but that Amish Cinnamon Bread… it kind of “takes the cake, too.” For a heartier bread, I ran across a Sausage and Cheese Bread that will knock your socks off and serve as one that even the most voracious of appetites won’t scoff at. And again, I always play with recipes and I’ve altered some of these according to my daring attitude toward cooking. How do you know it won’t work unless you try? My changes did, and I encourage all to doctor any of these breads to suit individual palates. Out on the water again, the paddler ran into an interesting

craft, of all things, it was what’s called an air boat and right there in front of him one day on Logan Martin. Chad Thompson explains the workings of his boat, and that it lends itself to a kind of fishing you might not be all that familiar with. Not one to spoil the story ahead of time, I’ll just say there’s a bow involved. Then we heard news that there’s a brand new chef in the “house” at The Tavern of St. Clair, one Joseph “Jay” Scott, a St. Clair County native who has returned “home” and is at the helm in the Tavern’s kitchen. Tavern owners Doug and Jill Pope and Scott are talking about all kinds of new menu offerings they want to pursue, and with that, we’ll just say that you’ll definitely want to try the Tavern’s new specialties in the coming months and oh yes, you can count of finding your all-time favorites, too. Lakeside homeowners and real estate professionals Mike and Pam Hendrix invite you inside their dream home in the River Oaks neighborhood for a visit, and these lake lovers say they think they’ve totally found their “forever” haven on the water. You’ll hear about how they found their home and what’s great for them being Logan Martin lovers. And before I forget, we want to remind you of your friends in Talladega who extend a great big welcome to their annual April in Talladega weekend. It’s coming up April 11 and 12 and from home tours and ghost stories and luncheons and, well, too much fun to list here, we know you’ll want to be part of this special springtime ritual. And here at Lakeside Living, we once again extend our thanks for your stories and your interest, and send a great big “happy spring” to you and yours…even if we’re perhaps a little early with it, we just can’t wait!

Story and photos by DAVID ATCHISON

I

am always saying you never know who or what you might see out on the water, and again, I am surprised at what I saw last week on Logan Martin Lake, part of the 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail. Yes, it was a boat, but not just any boat. This was what is known as an air boat. Yes, the ones you see on television, ripping nonstop through the Florida Everglades, but this bright orange airboat was out on Logan Martin Lake. It’s owner, Chad Thompson, 46, of Woodstock, said he’s only had the boat for about six months. “It’s a 1977 Aircat,” he said. The airboat was commonly used during the Vietnam conflict. The boat could run across shallow water and rice paddies without any problems. “I can cruise comfortably in six inches of water, as long as there are no rocks,” Thompson said. “In mud and grass I can be in about a half-inch of water as long as I keep moving.” Boy, that’s pretty good for a non-kayak vessel! An airboat is a flat-bottom vessel that is propelled forward by an aircraft or automotive engine. The engine

is mounted on top of the back deck of the boat, out of the water. The engine turns large fan propellers, which moves the boat forward by the sheer amount of airflow the propellers produce. The boat is guided by large rudders, directly behind the propellers. “There are no brakes,” Thompson said. “You crank the motor, you go forward. When it’s running, you’re moving. It’s been a big learning curve.” Thompson said he found the boat in back of an old Birmingham building, and he went to work restoring the vessel. The engine, he said, is a 500-cubic-inch Cadillac engine. He said the vessel will top out at about 50 mph. The engine is loud, but not too loud in my opinion. It was sort of neat, hearing and seeing Thompson crank up the airboat, but what in the world would someone want with an airboat, since we are so far away from the swamps? The logo along side the vessel says it all, “Team Final Notice Bowfishing.” It was sort of son, neat paddling Thompson and his youngest Dusty, 20, are bow through this tunnel under hunters, well I mean bow fishermen. Lake Shore Drive. There Thompson said it’s a way to spend quality time with his was farm land on

the other side of the tunnel. We Invite You To Visit Our Showroom Only 20 Minutes From Logan Martin

son, as well as look after him. Bowfishing is done at night, and after being on water all night bow fishing, that drive home can be dangerous. “Someone has to drive home,” he said. “So someone in the boat is sleeping, so they can drive back.” Thompson said they generally have four or five people to go on their bow fishing outings. He said bow fishermen can only shoot non-game fish, like gar, carp, drum, buffalo and catfish. Thompson said bass fishermen like bow fishermen, because they help reduce bass predators that feed on the bass eggs. “You can’t shoot game fish at all,” he said. Thompson designed the boat specifically for bow fishing, but they can also fish from the vessel with regular fishing gear. Two bow fishermen stand on the front deck of the boat as it eases through the shallow waters along the shore. The boat has powerful lights that illuminate the water, making fish more visible from the boat. Some bows have a reel attached, but Thompson’s bow fishing reel is actually attached to the boat. He uses 250 pound test line, which is attached to an arrow that has a special gig-type point for spearing fish. “You would be surprised how many fish you will see in a 10

night,” he said. Thompson and his son also participate in bow fishing tournaments. “It’s really getting to be a popular sport,” he said. The two will fish in a Missouri bow fishing tournament this May, and he said bow fishing tournaments are common on the Warrior River and Lake Guntersville. He said airboats are not only found in the Everglades, but elsewhere. “They use them up north a lot,” Thompson said. “I don’t know why, but they do.” He said perhaps it is because airboats can travel on top of ice, “if you have an aluminum boat.” Thompson said his boat is fiberglass, and he has to pay particular attention to rocks in shallow water. He said they adjust the poundage of their bows when bow fishing. The pull-back weights of their bows are set between 35-40 pounds. It also takes a lot of practice hitting a small target like fish, and it is also tricky because of the refraction of water. A bow fisherman must aim 6-inches to one foot below their target, depending on the depth of water the fish are in. For Thompson, it was his first trip on Logan Martin Lake in his airboat.

Marty Thompson makes a final inspection of the engine as his brother Chad gets ready to go in his 1977 Aircat airboat.

His brother, Marty, joined him. “You are kind of hunting and fishing at the same time,” he said. The two only managed to stay on the water until 10 p.m., because the temperatures were dropping below the freezing mark. “It was really too cold,” he said. In addition, the water was murky from the recent rains. Thompson said generally they bow fish from spring until fall, when the temperature is warmer. He and his brother didn’t have much luck that night, but they will probably be back for another try when the water level is up and the weather is a bit warmer. I will also return to the lake, hopefully more frequently as spring approaches and temperatures warm, so until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Like many artists, Spradley often paints from photographs he takes himself or gets from friends. This scene is one a friend collected while traveling in England.

acclaim for his lifetime of work, and it’s just natural that the elder Spradley has had a huge influence upon his son’s ventures into the world of art, too. Spradley recalls it was probably just a natural course of things for him to pick up a pencil as a youngster, he was born into an environment that cherished art and the challenge of creating it. While Spradley dabbled in the pursuit growing up, it was really a little later in life that he knew he had the “bug,” and decided to follow his early muse. After graduating from Pell City High School, Spradley decided to enter a family business with his aunt and uncle at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City. He completed the course of study required for mortuary science, and for eight years, worked in the business of helping families with the matters of making final arrangements for those who had passed away. This was a fulfilling and challenging endeavor, with Spradley supplying the help families need when a time of loss was facing them. 14

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

But eventually, Spradley decided to return to his leaning toward art, and attended Jacksonville State University where he equipped himself with the art and education classes required to start what has now become close to a 25 year career in art education. Spradley says he has truly found his calling, not only is he able to create his own art, but he can inspire and encourage the understanding and techniques involved in its pursuit for young minds. “I absolutely love it,” Spradley said. “Working with elementary age children is so much fun. I get to see their ideas, encourage their individual creativity and see the ways they choose to express themselves.” His time teaching art is spent at both Eden Elementary School and Iola Roberts Elementary in Pell City, spending half the school year at one, and then the other school. Spradley said having a school system that offers art to students at the elementary school level is an outstanding opportunity, not all school systems are able to offer the exposure for children at the elementary level.

POWER TO

OUR RIVERS

© 2014 Alabama Power Company

We believe the rivers of our great state hold more than water. They hold life for our communities, success for our businesses and decades of wonderful memories. Our rivers hold within them the best of Alabama. It’s been 15 years since we started working with you to keep our state’s waterways pristine. During that time we’ve removed more than 13 million pounds of trash together and strengthened Alabama in the process. Now, as we continue to maintain the clean waters we’ve achieved, our focus turns to stopping litter before it starts. Our hope is that during the next 15 years, through education and understanding, we can increase the love for our rivers while decreasing litter. This “love over litter” philosophy is how we make sure future generations discover the wonders our rivers hold. Visit RenewOurRivers.com to learn more.

Spradley especially likes preserving the many landscapes he finds on canvas. A collection of his paintings will be on display throughout this month at the Pell City Library.

“There are so many things that art instills in children, of course there’s the expression of images on paper, and learning how to apply techniques and teaching those tools,” he said. “But there are also the lessons of decision making and gaining the understanding that thoughts can be reflected on paper in so many ways,” he said. “It also adds to the understanding of thoughts being put on paper through writing.” Spradley keeps an art studio set up in his classroom, not only to use to instruct and demonstrate for his students during actual class time, but he’s often found there during breaks between classes or after school working on his own paintings. The youngsters at his schools are often drawn into the works in progress, and will ask their teacher how to create the effects they see on his canvases, and Spradley always obliges. 16

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

“It may be something as simple as how to make a leaf appear to be realistic and how its edges curl at a certain times, but they see what I’m doing and will want to know more,” he said. And that works right into showing young minds what art is all about for the teacher. Spradley has worked in just about every medium, but here lately, his interest in working in oils has become more prevalent. He’s been doing a lot of acrylic work, he said, which can also give paintings the depth and texture that oils offer, but said he seems to be finding even more results with adding texture using oils. He’s always been drawn to the outdoors for inspiration, Spradley said, more in terms of landscapes and scenery, but these days, he said he’s become even more interested in painting the wildlife he sees outdoors.

327247

Spradley is pictured in one of his favorite places, his classroom at Iola Roberts Elementary School in Pell City.

The love of preserving these images is one his father is very well known for, scenes of Alabama wildlife in their natural settings, with an abundant amount of inspiration right here at home. But someday, Alabama’s natural beauty and perfect habitat for so many creatures could find itself waning as some areas do when growing and economic progress take place, and both Spradleys will have committed these offerings to permanent places with their paintings for all to recall. Another inspiration for his art is found in painting scenes that feature windows and doors, Spradley said. “I really can’t say exactly why, but they intrigue me,” he said. For Spradley, painting is as much about feeling as anything, he said. “I feel the colors, the textures, and that’s what I work to include in my art,” he said. While his father was a huge influence on his pursuit of art, Spradley said his mother was always one to encourage and support the talent he showed, along with any of his other interests as well. “I think she used the phrase ‘Just do it!’ long before it became a Nike phrase,” he said. “She was always there to support me in all of my interests.” And her encouragement continues, Spradley said, in a very big way, though she passed away two years ago. During the summer months when he isn’t teaching art in school, Spradley likes to visit art shows as much as possible and finds inspiration from other artists in his travels. “So many artists are working in so many more mediums now, and this is 18

so interesting for me,” he said. Other influences come from his father, of course, and Spradley said one of his other favorite artists is the late Normal Rockwell’s reflections of real life in America. Though he loves the inspiration of nature in his work, Spradley said there’s an attraction to producing abstract art in him as well. “Sometimes, that just takes over and I really enjoy doing abstratcts,” he said. Right now, Spradley is working on a commissioned abstract for a client, and he’s also done lots of other commissioned work, including murals for homes and also for commercial settings. Some of his favorite work has been painting biblical scenes for churches, often to reflect a backdrop for baptismals and other important inspirational

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

biblical scenes. Spradley’s fulfillment as an art teacher and as an artist is the basis for his outlook on how it all came together for him in his daily life. “I feel like that’s why God has put me where I am, working with children, being an artist, I have the opportunity to have children open up to me and I can see their interest, we have a connection that I love being involved with,” he said. “And so many people don’t realize the potential that they have as artists. It’s a wonderful experience to encourage that.” Spradley’s work is often posted on his Facebook page, and is changed out as he completes pieces. For this artist, the ideas and the work continues to be the force he loves most, and one that’s likely to bring many more pieces that others will find inspiration from as well.

altering your cooking time to suit the need. And when it comes to adding or substituting, the only limits are your own preferences. I’m certainly no queen of the kitchen, but for most of my years, I’ve always been one to try something new or different with a recipe and really, this rarely lets me down. For instance, when I first read about the Amish Cinnamon Bread we’ll talk about this month, it sounded great…but it seemed to be screaming for a little something more. What I heard running through my head was “throw in some dried cranberries and walnuts! What could it possibly hurt?” And believe me, it didn’t. This bread turned out like it was just meant to be. And I still want to make it with chopped apples…maybe raisins…what about dates? Then there’s the Sausage and Cheese Bread…sounds good, right? It has some zest on its own, you use some onion, pepper flakes and hot sauce. How about topping it with scrambled eggs and cheese, even an egg over easy? I think you get my drift. There’s not much that could go wrong here. Another I’m excited to bring is an Orange Pecan Bread that is oh so good just like it is…but top it with some orange marmalade, mandarin orange slices or…yes, this is me talking…lemon ice cream or sherbet and you’ve got a real treat at your fingertips. A little lemon zest adds to the flavor, too, just sprinkled on top. I could go on and on, and as those who know me, I do tend to. But the point here is versatility, adaptability and yumability…is that a new word I just created? While I’m just yapping away here, let me mention that I know there are folks out there with a whole lot more experience and expertise than me…and I know, too, these people aren’t ones to brag on themselves. What I’m getting at here is it’s time to tell on your friends and neighbors! I would love to visit in their kitchens and share their talents! So…if you have a pal like that, you can tell me about them and I’ll never give it up about who said it…I’ll just say something like…”I heard about your… PLEASE let’s show off some of this talent we have out there!” Remember, Lakeside Living is all about showing off our places and people and we’ve got plenty to show in both regards. So let’s get started with that Amish Cinnamon Bread… you won’t be sorry! Amish Cinnamon Bread What you need: One cup butter, softened 22

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

Two cups sugar Two eggs Two cups buttermilk or milk Two tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice Four cups flour Two teaspoons baking soda For the cinnamon/sugar mixture: What you do: Mix together two-thirds of the sugar and the cinnamon. Sprinkle three fourths of this mixture on top of each pan of batter. Add remaining butter to pans and sprinkle with the last of the cinnamon topping. Bake at 360 for 45 to 50minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. cCool for 20 minuts before removing from pan. Note: I added the cranberries and walnuts, about half a cup each, into the batter before putting it into the pans. I also sprinkled in some brown sugar on top and more nuts. I can totally see adding chopped apples, sliced bananas or dates into the batter before putting into the baking pans. Orange Pecan Bread What you need: One can Pillsbury Grands eight count buttermilk biscuits One can Pillsbury Grands five count buttermilk biscuits One cup sugar One stick unsalted butter, melted Two small oranges One-and-a half cup confectioner’s sugar One half pecans, chopped One package cream cheese One dash orange extract. What you do: Spray a large bundt pan generously with cooking psray and set aside. Preheat oven to 375.Pour sugar into a small bowl. Zest both oranges and add to the sugar. Mix to combine. Reserve oranges to juice for making the glaze. Melt butter and pour a small amount into the bundt pan and spread half the pecans in the bottom. Open the cans of biscuits, and taking out one biscuit at a time, open each one and insert one tablespoon of cream cheese into the center and press to seal. Dip the biscuit in the melted butter and then dip in the sugar-orange zest mixture, coating the entire biscuit. Stand biscuit in bundt pan on its side. Repeat this with the remaining biscuits, creating a circle around the bundt pan. Pour remaining butter over the biscuits and sprinkle remaing pecans on top. Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until biscuits are puffed and golden. Remove from oven and turn the bread out onto a serving platter.

Topping glaze What you do: Mix confectioner’s sugar with the juice from the oranges to create a glaze. You may add a dash of orange extract if desired for added flavor. Use as much glaze needed to create a glaze consistency that you like. Drizzle this mixture over the bread while it’s still warm. Best served warm, but can be served at room temperature. For a dessert, top with ice cream or whipped cream, sprinkle with brown sugar and scatter lemon or orange zest on top. (It it’s brunch time, whip up some mimosas to go along with it!).

What you do: Preheat oven to 350. Coat a nine by five inch loaf pan with cooking spray. Crumble sausage into a large skillet and cook along with onion until brown, then drain on paper towels and let cool. In a large bowl, combine eggs, cheeses, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Mix well. Add baking mix, milk and mayonnaise and stir. Add sausage and onions to the mixture and mix until just blended. Pour into loaf pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. Let mixture rest in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a plate to serve.

Sausage and Cheese Bread What you need: One pound pork sausage One-fourth chopped onion One-fourth cup parmesan cheese One-half cup grated cheddar cheese One egg One-half teaspoon Texas Pete Hot Sauce One-and-a half teaspoon salt Dash of red pepper flakes Two cups Bisquick Two-thirds cup millk One-fourth cup mayonnaise

Around the Lake

All along the April in Talladega home tours, there are hosts and hostesses who will gladly share their knowledge of the historic homes and buildings.

You’re Invited... It’s April in Talladega Home tours, ghost stories, a block party and more Story by ELSIE HODNETT Photos by BOB CRISP

H

istoric pilgrimages, ghost tours and plenty of good food make attending this year’s April in Talladega a must. “Although April in Talladega has been an ongoing event for the last 33 years, the Talladega Pilgrimage Council has tried to incorporate new additions to the weekend,” said Evelyn McGehee, co-chair of this year’s April in Talladega along with Donna Edmiston and Beth Lumpkin.

24

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

“The cooking show, antique show and our ‘April on the Square’ party have given new life to the event and brought many people in to Talladega to enjoy other aspects of the town besides our charming homes,” McGehee said. The 2014 April in Talladega weekend is April 11-12. The 33rd Tour of Homes features the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hill at 607 South Street East, Dr. and Mrs. Zack Dollar at 411 Norman C. Wood Street and Mrs. Nelson G. Conover at 727 Maple Drive. Manley Manor, owned

by Mrs. Salome Manley, and the Talladega Masonic Lodge will also be featured. Home tours are available both days from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tour guides at each home site will assist with directions and provide information about the home. There are a number of free events and events requiring tickets. Free events include Heritage Hall Museum’s presentation from “Perry Austin,” a nationally known artist; the Historic Courthouse Square with restaurants, shops, businesses and the oldest continually operating courthouse in Alabama; “April on the Square,” a fun-filled Block Party with local food, artists, vendors, inflatables and live music; an Antique Show at Townsend’s Warehouse located at 206 Coosa Street West; events and entertainment at AJ Powers Memorial Lodge on Alabama 21 in Winterboro; the Talladega Public Library Genealogy Room with “A View of the Past” and a Talking Tent with a storyteller on the lawn. Events requiring additional tickets include a Wine and Cheese Reception from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Friday at Heritage Hall Museum, The Ghosts of Talladega, presentation at Oak Hill Cemetery Tours at 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Friday, Taste of Talladega Luncheons at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 11:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, a cooking demonstration from Garfrerick’s Café of Oxford at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Teas for Callie’s Kids at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday. “April in Talladega is the oldest and most successful

annual event that draws upwards of 500 visitors to our city each year,” said Jason Daves, executive director of the Greater Talladega/Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce. “April in Talladega is successful because it is truly our community working together for the betterment of our city. There are countless volunteers who make this event what it is.” Daves said there are those who serve on the Pilgrimage Council work on the event year-round, those who volunteer to help the weekend of the event and the residents who open up their beautiful homes for the public to view are vital to April in Talladega’s success. “These citizens spend months upon months of their time and money to make sure their home is truly a showcase for those attending,” he said. “This community-wide dedication is what brings people back to our town year after year.” McGehee said all proceeds from the weekend go back into the preservation and restoration of buildings in the City of Talladega. “Our history, as well as our present, is what defines us as a community and our citizens are proud to support our ‘April in Talladega’ weekend,” she said. “Come join us for a funfilled weekend—there is something for everyone.” To reserve tickets for April in Talladega events, you may contact the Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce at 256-362-7095.

Lakeside Living in Style

A Home for the Pros Mike and Pam Hendrix ‘cheat life’ living on Logan Martin Story by EMILY McLAIN Photos by BOB CRISP

A

t the same time this couple was entering the real estate business, they were looking for new real estate of their own. And as it turns out, the hunt was pretty simple for realtors Mike and Pam Hendrix. “This was the first and only house we looked at,” Pam

26

said. Ten years ago, the Hendrixes were engaged and looking to sell each of their homes to purchase one together. Mike’s daughter’s in-laws lived in the River Oaks neighborhood of Cropwell, so Mike and Pam went to look at the area and their now-home immediately caught their eye.

Real estate professionals Mike and Pam Hendrix are thrilled with the lake home they found for themselves in the River Oaks development in Pell City.

“We got the realtor to come meet us, went inside, and we bought it the next day,” Pam said. “It all worked out.” The house had everything they wanted, so the pair – who later tied the knot at their new home – didn’t think twice about discontinuing their search. “The view was mainly what we were looking for, and something we could live in for a long time,” Pam said. “If we had looked at a hundred more houses, I think we still would have come back to this one.” It’s not hard to see why they loved the 4,000 square foot home, with a recently updated interior, a finished basement and plenty of waterfront footage. Oh, and don’t forget that view. March 2014 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

Neutral tones poised against dramatic accents give the living room elegance and flair.

It hits you as soon as you pull into the driveway and stays there through practically every room of the house – a panoramic sight of Logan Martin. “It’s so calming, and we see a lot of wildlife,” Pam said. “The view is really what sold us on this house.” Outside, the home offers tan siding, iron lantern accents and a wraparound deck that splits into two levels in the back. Tables and chairs make the deck a favorite hangout in the warmer months. Sky-high windows surrounding the front door invite a view of water before even entering the home. Inside is a semi-open floor plan, with a foyer that shares space with the living room, and also leads upstairs, to the right, or to the master suite, on the left. The living room features a stone fireplace, a Frenchmade chandelier, a Baldwin baby grand piano (which Pam plays on occasion), all on a neutral palette with bursts of warm colors. With 20-foot ceilings and tall windows in the lake-facing wall, the room is dominated by a breathtaking sight of the water, a constantly changing piece of art. Dark wood furniture, found throughout the home, adds warmth as well as elegance to complete the space. Hardwood floors throughout were an improvement the Hendrixes made. The kitchen and dining room are adjoining. The dining 28

room boasts a bold chandelier and a bar that connects it to the kitchen, where the homeowners have done some minor renovations. “The previous owner had done a lot of renovations to the structure, but there was still a lot left to be done when we bought it,” Pam said. Dark granite countertops had already been installed, but Mike and Pam, using their realtor expertise, knew some small changes to make to improve the look and value of the room. “We painted the cabinets and put in new stainless steel appliances,” Pam said. “Before, there was a pass-through to the breakfast nook on the other side of the oven. Mike built this wall to close that in.” The couple, who sells residential and commercial property in Talladega and St. Clair counties, also enjoys house-flipping, where they purchase a home to renovate and resell. One detail they always personalize in their renovated homes is the kitchen backsplash, and they did the same for their own home – with a specially designed tile square over the oven. “We were going to buy a piece like that already made, but they were $700, so we just made our own,” Mike said. They made the breakfast nook into a laundry room, and also have a walk-in pantry in the room. On the other side of the living room is the master

The kitchen at the Hendrix home is one that serious cooks would certainly love to find themselves in.

suite, where the couple has completed further renovations. The bedroom, like other rooms in the home, sticks to their traditional decorating style, adding pops of red and green in the curtains and comforter. “I tend to use a neutral wall color, like tan, and bring in color with the furnishings and accessories,” Pam said. In the master bathroom, the Hendrixes added light tan ceramic tile, a Jacuzzi tub, a built-in vanity (Pam’s favorite addition), and double sinks with dark countertops and 30

fixtures. “Even though we plan to be in this house forever, we still focused on resell elements with our renovations, and kitchens and bathrooms are always the biggest selling points,” Pam said. “A good-quality ceramic tile and nice cabinets and storage add a lot.” Off the bedroom is a sunroom that was formerly a screened-in porch. They closed in the room and made part of it into a closet space by building a partial wall. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one set up as an office, that share a bath, and

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

downstairs is another two bedrooms, an updated bathroom, a fitness room and a large living room area. Tiled floors make the area perfect for coming in from outside after a day on the lake. Speaking of the lake, it is the Hendrixes absolute favorite part of their Logan Martin home. “The lake is our big thing,” Mike said. “We like to stay on the water as much as possible.” With three grandchildren – Matthew, 14; Colby, 11; and Emma, 7; and two nieces, Emily, 8,; and Lily, 3; who love they water as much as they do, Mike and Pam are gearing up for another fun summer on the lake, made easier with their variety of water toys. Their expanded dock houses a pontoon boat, a Wave Runner and floating trampoline, and Mike says their bright yellow slide acts as a defining feature. “It’s painted Mustang yellow with blue splashes on it,” he said. “Nobody else has one like that, so that’s how we tell people to find our house from the water. Look for the yellow slide.” They also frequent Pirate Island with their little visitors, and enjoy the Fourth of July fireworks from the water, as well as all of the other relaxing and special benefits that come with the lake. “We feel like we’re just cheating life by living on the lake,” Mike said. “It’s a permanent vacation.” After 10 years in their home, all the planned home improvements are marked off the list, and the couple is ready to relax (when they’re not working, of course). “We’ve got everything like we want it,” Pam said. “I think we will definitely be staying here for the rest of our lives.”

A floor to ceiling stacked stone fireplace is another special touch inside the home.

Lakeside Dining

Oh yes, it’s as good as it looks when your order arrives at The Tavern of St. Clair. Above, the ahi tuna appetizer served with Wasabi sauce.

Welcoming Added Talent in the Kitchen Jay Scott returns ‘home’ as chef for The Tavern Story by CHRIS NORWOOD Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

T

he Tavern of St. Clair has by now a fairly lengthy history in Pell City, but even now, the next chapter is being written, according to owner Doug Pope. Pope said new chef Joseph “Jay” Scott came on board about a month ago, and was in the process of working with Pope and his wife, Jill, on a new menu.

32

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2014

“We had a Beef Wellington on the menu for Valentines Day, and that went very well,” Pope said. “In fact, Valentines Day was about the best night we’ve ever had here.” Scott brings a wealth of experience with him, as well as family connections to the area. “Just about all of my family is here,” he said. “My

grandfather was Joe Black, who has a street in Coal City named after him. But my family moved to Kentucky during the coal boom, when I was about 10 years old. My parents retired and moved back here in the 1980s, so my mom, dad, aunts and uncles and cousins are all here.” Scott says he got into the business in 1986, beginning his studies at Horry-Georgetown Tech in Conway, S.C. He spent some 16 years working in and around Charleston mastering “southern creative cuisine and seafood,” as he put it. “Seafood is a big thing with me,” he explained. “I worked with a cordon bleu chef who taught me a lot. It’s a big tourism area, and people tend to stay around the same places for ever. All of the people that I worked with over the years are what I would call ‘seasoned.’ I’m 51 years old now, so I guess you could say I’m seasoned, too.” Scott also worked in Louisville, Ky., where he helped 34

prepare meals for the chief executive officers of such major companies as UPS, Humana, Yums (owner of Taco Bell, KFC, Long John Silver’s and A&W Root Beer, among others) and Toyota. “That was the first time I ever had to take my shoes off to serve anyone,” he said. “That was neat. But we fed all kinds of CEOs, and they ate well.” Doug Pope also cited his experience at the Blue Grass Brewery in Louisville, where he mastered “upscale pub food.” Meanwhile, back in Alabama, the Popes had lost a chef to Birmingham, and began advertising the position on the internet. Scott was a natural fit. “He just started about a month ago,” Pope said. “We should have the new menu out in the next few months, and we’ve already got some great new nightly features. We’re still trying to decide which ones we want to put

on there.” Pope said for most of the time they’ve owned the tavern, the menu was redesigned every eight months or so, but this will be the first new menu to come out since June of last year, he said. 337942

Paul Manning St. Clair County Commission

“We’re really excited,” Pope said. Some of Scott’s favorite new items include a fried green tomato napoleon, which includes proscuito and boursin cheese over ratatouille, and a steak dian with two medallions of beef and a cognac sauce.

People around here really like their steaks, so we give it to them any way we can think of. We even have a steak salad.” The new menu is not the only change in the air, he added. “We’re looking at opening up on Sundays,” Pope said. “We’ll probably be starting that around Mother’s Day.” 40

A Lakeside House With All the Trimmings 4749 Griffitt Bend Road Story by BILL KIMBER Photos by BOB CRISP

T

he online listing of 4749 Griffitt Bend Road describes the house as a “stunning home on Lake Logan Martin. That’s a major understatement. From every angle, this custom-built brick home evokes adjectives such as stately, elegant, spectacular, luxurious, perfect and many more. Built in 2001, the all-brick house has an open floor plan with 14-foot ceilings in the living room, along with a gas log fireplace and built-in cabinets. There are three bedrooms and three baths on one and a half stories. The gourmet kitchen features stone countertops, cherry cabinets, an island with a bar sink and a spacious pantry. Appliances include a smooth-top Jenn-Air cooktop, a built-in microwave and dual ovens, and the breakfast nook offers a breathtaking view of the lake. The spacious, formal dining room features beautiful white columns. The master suite includes a sitting area with French doors leading to the covered patio and a bathroom featuring twin vanities, a jetted garden tub and a tile shower with dual shower heads.

Upstairs are two large bedrooms and a full bath, along with a bonus room that can be used as a media room or extra bedroom. Amenities throughout include recessed lighting, a sound system, bay windows, balconies, crown molding, French doors, vaulted ceilings and tray ceilings. There’s a dual heat pump system, and the unit for the main level was recently replaced. The property includes a three-car garage and a sprinkler system with a new pump that draws from the lake. There’s a large laundry room with a utility sink. Outdoors, the 52,272-square-foot lot has a long waterfront with seawall and pier, and the house has covered and open decks. “This is a great house,” said listing broker Sharon Thomas of RE/MAX Hometown Properties in Pell City. “It’s got so much room for a big family. It’s move-in ready, and now is the time to buy. There aren’t many lakefront properties like this out there,” she said. Listing price is $499,000. For more information, contact Thomas at 205-365-8875 or view the house online at http://www.sharonthomas. net/ListNow/Property.aspx?PropertyID=2269874. elling real estate is how Greg Atkinson makes a living. Working to build up the community is how he makes a life. Atkinson is associate broker at Atkinson Real Estate, a company his uncle, Earl Atkinson, started in Sylacauga in the late 1950s. His mother, June Atkinson, is now owner and broker of the agency. “I grew up with this around me, and I’m glad I was able to get into it myself,” he said. “It’s always a good situation when you can learn about a business when you’re in school and college and make the decision to come back home and have a career.” After college, Atkinson traveled for a few years for a company that imported topaz and sapphires from Sri Lanka, selling at wholesale gem shows and industry shows. “I met a wide range of people, and that was fun,” he said. And he lived in New Orleans for a while before returning to his hometown. “It was nice seeing a lot of places while I was younger. New Orleans is nice, but I was glad to move home. There’s something about living in a small town that really makes you call it home. It’s hard to call a large city home. “Sylacauga is place where you go in the bank or store and you know people. It was culture shock down there.” He’s been back in Sylacauga and in the real estate business for 28 years, and handles residential, commercial and industrial transactions. “What I like about real estate is 44

that you get to meet a lot of different people,” he said, adding that he enjoys the challenge of matching people up with whatever type of property they need. “It’s exciting when you can help a family find a new home or help a business locate in your town or close to it.” Atkinson serves on the Talladega County Commission representing District 5, and is the chairman of the Sylacauga City Schools Foundation board of directors. He’s on the board of the Sylacauga Arts Council and is a former president of the Comer Museum board of directors. He served two terms as president of the Talladega County Board of Realtors, and also served on the Multiple Listing Service board. “I try to give back professionally and privately wherever I can, because you want your city and industry to be the best they can be,” he said. He’s proud of the money the Sylacauga City Schools Foundation grants to teachers to use in their classrooms – $56,000 last year and as much as $100,000 in years past. “You’ve got to give kids the best chance you can to get an education. The world they are growing up in is so much different from the world we grew up in. Technology plays such a part in their lives. People give to the foundation because they realize how important it is to support education.” Industries need a trained labor force, and today’s adults need welleducated leaders to take the reins of the community as they become senior citizens, he said. “We need to teach our students

Greg Atkinson to be creative and think outside the box.” Atkinson said the real estate market has been through ups and downs, and he believes it’s now on an upturn. “We’re seeing some of the lowest interest rates we’ve ever seen. They’re expected to go up by this summer or by the end of the year at least. Now is the best possible time to buy a house, before the interest rates go up.” It’s a less wonderful time to be a seller, he said, explaining that having too many foreclosed homes on the market in recent years has decreased values across the board. A few more foreclosures are still coming onto the market, but Atkinson said he expects the inventory of foreclosures to decrease and property values to increase in the coming few years. Atkinson’s wife, Cindy, is executive director of Cheaha Mental Health Center, and they are parents to twin daughters, Anna Claire and Kate, 8. The family attends First United Methodist Church of Sylacauga. “I enjoy knowing I’ve helped somebody find the property they need,” Atkinson said. “Whether it’s a family or a commercial business or an industry, as you help people think of your town or area as their home, your town grows. You always feel good when you help somebody move into the area or move up to a bigger house as their family grows.”
