Spring comes at last to Logan Martin

Local children got the chance to hunt Easter eggs during a special event at Pell City’s Lakeside Park.

From the editor… Spring is upon us, and Logan Martin Lake is starting to brim with activity. The water’s up, the annual lake clean-up is completed, and full-time and part-time residents alike are readying their lakeside homes for the season. Inside this month’s issue of Lakeside Living, you’ll find a high-flying mayor who uses his airplane to get a perspective on a good portion of the city he now governs. Readers will see that big isn’t always better. This month’s issue features a do-it-yourselfer who designed and built his unusual home on a hillside to get the perfect view in the perfect setting. You will see how a lakeside couple turns a Southern bounty of gourds into art and habitats for birds and butterflies, and you will learn a thing or two about getting rid of those pesky spiders that wreak havoc on lakeside dwellers. All this and more awaits you in this month’s edition of Lakeside. It’s May. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be.

Flying gives mayor unique perspective of Pell City Story by Katherine Poythress Photos by Brian Schoenhals

Pell City Mayor Bill Hereford has only recently taken on the responsibility of promoting and running a city long heralded as “The Gateway to Logan Martin Lake,” but he has already put his fresh perspective to use in bringing the city and lake into a new era. “I’m an old guy, but a new mayor,” Hereford said goodnaturedly. From Page 7 Mayor Bill Hereford wheels his plane into its hangar.

He announced his candidacy last year after former Mayor Adam Stocks decided not to run for re-election. Several Pell City residents suggested Hereford step up, and the retired St. Clair County circuit judge thought it sounded like a good idea. Although he considers himself an oldtimer, Hereford’s new slogan for the city he oversees is “The 21st Century is Ours.” And though he is a self-proclaimed oldtimer, Hereford is a dynamic mover and shaker. He has always enjoyed going places, and using technology to do so. From the cockpit of his single-engine Piper Archer airplane, Hereford has a unique perspective — both literally and figuratively — on the area. In his private plane equipped with four GPS systems, a highly intelligent autopilot and leather-finished interior, Hereford attributes his love of flying to the freedoms it offers. He likes traveling, he said. Even

more than traveling itself, he enjoys traveling without the discomforts and hassles of airline flying. He runs his city in much the same way: Any bells and whistles he adds are intended to improve on quality of life and make Pell City living easier. Recognizing the importance of the city’s raw assets, like the lake, Hereford came into office with a vision of how to capitalize on technology to better promote them and govern Pell City. He plans to use those same tools to improve the lake, which he considers the city’s most important asset. “It’s just that added special thing that differentiates us from many other cities in Alabama, because of the recreational aspect it brings to Pell City,” he said. Though the lake has its economic advan-

Epell.net has already helped promote the Logan Martin Lake cleanup this March as it posted helpful information and phone numbers, as well as a reminder of the city’s $215 fine for littering to help discourage unnecessary pollution of the lake area. He also sings the praises of developers who are concerned about constructing environmentally friendly subdivisions with good sewer systems that can guard against damaging the lake. “These days, we are more than just the gateway to the lake,” he said. “We are the gatekeepers.” Not only a new mayor, Hereford is also a relative rookie when it comes to flying, he said — he has logged approximately 500 hours in flight, while many men his age can boast tens of thousands. His newness makes him more cautious, though. For all his love of technology and innovation and his eagerness in taking advantage of them, Hereford is a meticu-

He carefully plans each of his trips and doesn’t take to the air unless the weather promises to be safe. He keeps backup GPS systems and radios. Residents can only expect that, as he continues flying Pell City into the new century as mayor, Hereford will demonstrate the same amount of care and planning. Some requirements to successfully running a city are similar to those in successfully flying a plane — constant communication and coordination. But the rewards, as with traveling by plane, are great, he said. His job description, which he has redefined in his first few months, is “interesting, challenging, and a lot of it is just plain fun,” he said. Just like flying.

A way to keep the bugs at bay Story by Katherine Poythress Photos by Brian Schoenhals For the Logan Martin Lake homeowner who already has everything, great and small, Pell City resident David Smith offers a product new to much of the Southeast that is designed to eliminate some of the undesirable smaller things – spiders, their webs, and all manner of other insects. “I built my house on the lake six years ago and realized I had a problem,” Smith said. “I had no idea it was going to be this way when I built our dream house on the lake, but we discovered we weren’t the only guests in our house.” Through a cousin, four years ago Smith discovered Trinity, Texas-based Spider Be Gone Systems. He contacted the dealer within days of hearing his cousin’s glowing recommendation for the system, but learned there was no dealer in Alabama. Smith soon found himself on a flight to Texas to learn for himself how to install the Spider Be Gone system, just so he could get rid of his new lakeside pests. “I went out there with no intention of going into business,” Smith said. “It keeps the home exterior, decks, docks and yard clean from almost all insects.” After adding the digitally timed sprayer system to his dream house and boat dock, Smith’s neighbors began to take note. “It worked just as advertised,” he said. One neighbor asked why, while he had to carry a broom down to the boat dock with him every day just to knock down spider webs, Smith was able to stroll down to his dock in the morning with no anti-arachnid weapon in hand. “Why don’t I ever see a broom?” he asked Smith. “I showed him the system, and he said, ‘That’s cool. I want one,’” Smith recounted. Since he had already acquired the skills necessary to install Spider Be Gone, and since he had a readymade market niche with lake home owners all around him, Smith decided then that he should turn this into a summer business. At the time, he was working for ESPN’s College GameDay show. After 17 years with the show, however, Smith was laid off last December. That was when he determined to throw his business doors wide open with Spider Be Gone and go into full-time ownership of Spider Be Gone

Systems of Central Alabama. “Up until now, people have known they had a problem but they didn’t know there was a solution to the problem,” he explained. Many lakeside dwellers had grown to accept the insects, cobwebs and cleaning as just facts of life. Now Smith said he enjoys working on and near the water, meeting interesting people, and helping them find a solution to a problem. “We all have better things to do now than sweep insects away,” he said. Smith has about a dozen clients so far, and as seasonal lake home dwellers make their pilgrimages to the Logan Martin Lake area, he hopes to generate more interest in his solution. He is, after all, the only dealer in the state of Alabama, even though there are tens of thousands of Spider Be Gone customers throughout the United States. Pyrethrum, the chemical used in the Spider Be Gone system, is a derivative from the chrysanthemum and is safe enough for people that it is used on grocery store vegetables. It is lethal for insects, however, because it attacks their central nervous system. The timed spray system, which can be installed on any structure, releases small amounts of pyrethrum at regular intervals to create an invisible anti-insect barrier around the structure. “It virtually eliminates all flying insects as well,” Smith explained. He and his wife used to have to keep several cans of insect repellant by the doors to their home and sprayed themselves down before emerging into the great outdoors. In the last four years since installing Spider Be Gone, however, Smith said he has not had to use insect repellant once. The formerly ubiquitous cobwebs are barely existent on

the home, which Smith said he hasn’t had to clean in four years. Reducing the need for pressure-washing can increase the life of the paint on a home, he added. The Spider Be Gone chemical resides in a 55-gallon high-pressure pump, which is the heart of the system. The pump is connected with ¼-inch nylon tubing to nozzles arranged under the eaves at 10- to 15-foot intervals, which atomize the chemical to a fine mist, creating a natural barrier around the home. The nozzles can also be installed around pools, gazebos, tennis courts and other areas for maximum protection against insects. The chemical can last for an entire season, depending on the size of the home, and Smith monitors the chemical levels, making house calls to refill the tanks. He does not charge for labor in repairs to the system, only the cost of parts. “The system helps control many flying pests, requires minimal maintenance and has increased our enjoyment of our home on a daily basis,” said Ed Seitz, a Spider Be Gone customer. “We are very pleased with how effective the system is and the workmanship that went into the installation of the system.” Smith said he has a working demonstration system in the Tradesman Company showroom in Cropwell, near Lakeside Landing. Prices for Spider Be Gone installation vary, depending on the size of the structure, but Smith offers free estimates. “The bottom line is, how much less time the average lake homeowner is going to have to spend cleaning and how much more time they will have to enjoy the outdoors without having to deal with pesky insects.”

ART BY THE WATER Gourds make a natural medium for artists

Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Brian Schoenhals Mike and Patti McDonough were left scratching their heads when they received a gift for which they had no apparent use. “(Patti’s) sister gave her a gourd from Tennessee. She had this gourd, and she didn’t know what to do with it,” Mike said. “Actually, there were about three or four that she brought up.” While pondering the fate of the gourds, Patti decided to take a shot at painting and decorating them. “We were into birds at the time. I was looking for a natural cavity for birds. I’d made regular wood birdhouses, and the gourds are more natural and are actually better for a birdhouse than anything,” Mike said. “So that’s how we got into it — we were making birdhouses.” Now, both Mike and Patti have a hobby on which they can spend time working together and even make a little money in the process.

Mike and Patti McDonough show off some of their pieces made from gourds.

The McDonoughs have expanded the kinds of work they do, but they still use gourds exclusively.

The McDonoughs expanded their repertoire as far as the kinds of pieces they can make, but they have not strayed from exclusively using gourds as their medium, making them unique among most of the other artists living at the lake. The couple moved to the lake to enjoy the warmer temperatures after residing in Southern Wisconsin for many years. They started their gourd art around 10 years ago in Wisconsin, and they took their craft with them when they moved to Alabama about five years ago. Mike said, “You want a nice, thick gourd. The growing season is long here. That’s why down South, Mississippi and Alabama, it’s a good growing area because the season is longer and you get a thick

Patti envisions how the finished gourd should look as well as doing the decorating and painting or staining. Mike cleans out the gourds and cuts them into the forms Patti asks for. Like a lot of local artists, they were happy making gourds for just themselves, but they reached the point where they were able to sell gourds when their popularity grew beyond family and friends.

“We ended up doing stuff for relatives, giving them away for gifts, and then people started wanting to buy them to give as a unique gift,” Mike said. “Through the years, we did birdhouses, but then it became so interesting, we had to find out different ways of doing things.” Now, they make a variety of items, such as bowls, gourd dippers, butterfly houses and what has become an especially popular item for them, gourd jack-o-lanterns. “It’s the shape of the gourds,” Patti explained. “We had one that was in the shape of a skull so around Halloween time, we made it into a skeleton, put lights in it and

Patti said they enjoy working on the gourds while outside on the deck. “It’s just beautiful to work out here,” Patti said. Both animals and humans alike have been using gourds in various ways for thousands of years. As long as folks like Mike and Patti McDonough are around, new artistic uses for gourds will continue to be found. “There’s so many techniques, we haven’t even scratched the surface of technique,” Mike said.

They like to use gourds that are grown in the South because the longer growing season in this region creates thicker and more durable gourds.

Eagles over Logan Martin Lake

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, MAY 2009

Story and photos by David Atchison

Kayaker turns his eyes to the sky EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail. Normally, I’m looking at the water as I paddle down the Alabama Scenic River Trail, but my attention turned skyward during my latest journey — because of a couple of majestic birds, a pair of bald eagles. Yes, right here on Logan Martin Lake, bald eagles are becoming a common sight to local residents. It was Julie Pounders of Riverside, who with her enthusiasm and knowledge about the lake’s big birds pushed me on a mission to get some photographs of a pair of bald eagles nesting along the Coosa River. It’s been a hide-and-seek game between these pair of mature eagles and me, but I was able to get a few good pictures of them, as well as learn a few things about one of the largest North American birds that live right here along Logan Martin Lake. Bald eagle numbers declined dramatically during the last century because of several factors, including the loss of habitat and a pesticide called DDT. The pesticide made its way into water, entering the eagles’ food chain, fish. According to biologists, the chemical made bald eagle egg shells thin, causing them to break before hatching. The bald eagle was eventually placed on the Endangered Species List, and this majestic bird completely disappeared from the skies of Alabama. That was until restoration efforts began in the 1980s and 1990s to bring bald eagles back to Alabama. Keith Hudson, a wildlife biologist for Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fishers section of the Alabama Department of Conservation, played a part in bringing bald eagles back to our state and to Logan Martin Lake. He said Bald Eagles normally nest where they first take flight, so juvenile bald eagles were forced to take flight or “hacked” in select areas of the state, including from towers located along Logan Martin Lake. Hudson said the restoration program began in 1984, and from 1985-1991, juvenile bald eagles were released from select areas of the state.

The bald eagle eggs came from Florida nests and were shipped and incubated in Oklahoma before the actual birds were brought to Alabama. “Some eggs came from local zoos,” Hudson said, “but for the most part, the eggs came from Florida.” Once hatched, it takes 10-12 weeks before a juvenile bald eagle is ready for flight. Hudson said the bald eagles hatched in Oklahoma were brought to Alabama and were fed and raised in pens, where they were to be released or “hacked” from 1981-1991. He said nesting numbers have slowly increased in Alabama. It takes four to five years before the birds mature and mate. In 2006, there were 77 nests statewide, with 450-500 bald eagles wintering in Alabama. “Essentially, we found they were doing fine, so we scaled back our surveys,” he said. And although there are laws that currently protect bald eagles, these birds, which have wing spans reaching 6-8 feet, were taken off the Endangered Species List. “Most of the birds we see are migratory birds,” he said. Generally, young eagles only produce one egg, but as they mature, bald eagles normally lay two eggs, and on rare occasions three, Hudson said. “Some are very tolerant of human presence; other birds are very reclusive and become upset when people come close by,” he said. “Generally, they like a certain amount of seclusion.”

David Atchison spent days collecting images of the bald eagles around the lake.

Bald eagles mate for life, and it’s not uncommon for a pair of eagles to build four to five nests in one general area. Hudson said it gives the pair of birds backup nests if a storm destroys a nest. Generally, bald eagles build onto their original nest, making it bigger and stronger each year. He said juvenile bald eagles look like golden eagles, and they do not get a white head and tail until they reach maturity, which takes about five years. Hudson said most bald eagles migrate north during the summer, returning to Alabama near Thanksgiving. Some birds however, take residence year-round. Generally, bald eagles build their nests and lay their eggs in Alabama between December and January. It takes 14-16 weeks for Eagle eggs to hatch and another 12-14 weeks before juvenile birds are ready for flight. Hudson said bald eagles are fish eaters, but are very opportunistic. As for me, it was really wonderful to see these birds up close and personal, but my visit with these marvelous birds is over. I now turn my attention back to the water and down the Alabama Scenic River Trail, so until next time, have a happy and safe time on the lake.

A bald eagle opens its talons as it prepares to land on the limb of a tall pine tree.

Lake house designed with water in mind

Story by Laura Nation-Atchison Photos by Brian Schoenhals Leon Tsimpides had a plan. And he built a whole house around it. The property he and his wife Debbie bought on Logan Martin Lake included three partly wooded acres with a hilltop setting. Every time he put his boat in or out of the water, it was a little problematic. He thought there had to be a way to eliminate it. So even though he had never actually designed a house himself, Tsimpides got busy with his idea to simplify taking the boat in and out, and now the structure stands on the hillside overlooking the water. The entire bottom floor serves as a garage and there are double garage doors at either end.

The Tsimpides’ home sits on a hillside on Broken Arrow Creek and offers a big view of the activity that takes place on the water.

That means Tsimpides can simply drive through the lowest level of the house with the boat in tow when it’s time to move it around. It’s worked out well, he said, since finishing up the house in January, just off a main channel on part of Broken Arrow Creek in the Riverside area. There’s room, too, for the rowboat he and Mrs. Tsimpides like to paddle around in and lots of other necessities for enjoying lakeside living. The Tsimpides have owned two other lake homes on Logan Martin, the first in the Skyline area of Pell City and the second in Country Club Estates on the Talladega side of the water. This was the first time the couple built, though, he said. “We had bought houses before that needed some repair,” Tsimpides said. Not only did the couple start from the ground up this time, Tsimpides basically did the work, from the bottom up. He was the guy people would see from the water hanging from ropes working on the rafters, not only two stories high, but add in the incline of the property itself. “I pretty much drove every nail in the house,” he

said. To get prepared for the build, Tsimpides’ wife brought in bundles of library books she could find on the subject, and he started studying. He found help, too, at the places he bought materials, saying, “I just kept asking questions.” He found information about ecofriendly materials, too, like the simulated brick panels he used on the lower exterior walls and the panels made to look like cedar shingles on the upper level. It created a cottage-like look that sits well on the hillside. Tsimpides designed a series of stairways and decks to lead to the upper living space. The upper walkway wraps around three sides, and there’s a deck on the end of the house that faces the main channel. Double glass doors are used to enter the house from the deck, and opening

The living room runs across the width of the house on one end, and the vaulted roof has exposed beams. Walls are a light sage color, and trim, including the beams, is white. Floors are warm hardwood, and the room holds a number of family pieces, including Tsimpides’ grandmother’s telephone table that he has refinished himself. Rattan-bottom stools finished in black are used in the living room, which opens into the adjoining kitchen. There’s room for four wrought iron bar stools at the kitchen bar, which Tsimpides used to tuck a washer and dryer underneath. A trio of glazed-glass, tulip-shaped lights hang over the bar. Tsimpides jokes that the bar area also comes in handy as an ironing board and kitchen table, too. Countertops are light beige, and kitchen cabinets are oak. Pulls on the cabinets are the same oil-rubbed bronze the sink fixtures are made of.

A guest room is fitted with a brass bed with quilted coverings and stacked matching pillows. Walls are soft beige, and trim is white. Sheer taupe drapes surround the double windows and pull back on metal rods to show the view below. The master bedroom walls are deep gold, and the trim and ceiling are white. Double windows on facing walls give a wrap-around view of the water. A crocheted spread made in squares covers the iron-frame bed, and light ivory drapes edge the windows. A large bath is located at the end of the house, where the Tsimpides used a shaker-style chest for a vanity. It’s large enough to hold a marble vanity with a double sink, and fixtures are the same oil-rubbed bronze as used in the kitchen. The chest has pull-out drawers and an open shelf underneath, in-between the sinks. Another piece from his grandmother, an antique bookcase, is used for storing towels. A skylight adds natural light in the bath. Flooring in the bath is porcelain tile. The Tsimpides found their newest spot on Logan Martin through an accidental encounter with an agent at a building supply store.

The master bedroom has large windows on two facing walls.

“He told us about this property, and that there was a contract in the works, but he felt it wouldn’t go through,” Tsimpides said. He liked the lengthy waterfront – 890 feet in all – and the way the property sloped to the water. When he got to work landscaping the property and bringing in concrete for the drive and walkways, Tsimpides found out he had some pretty helpful neighbors. Just across the water is neighbor Johnny Rice, who was watching Tsimpides labor on the project using only a wheelbarrow on the landscaping. Rice offered his tractor for the work, making things a whole lot easier. “I guess he just got tired of watching me with that wheelbarrow,” Tsimpides said, laughing. Now, Tsimpides returns the favor with some of the tile work and other details he learned about at Rice’s home. Tsimpides is retired from the auto industry, but drives a school bus for the Shelby County School System. Mrs. Tsimpides is a registered nurse and works in workman’s compensation case management. He grew up in Birmingham, and both his mother’s parents and his father’s parents were in the restaurant business there. His mother’s parents owned the Cosmas Café across from the train station in downtown, and his father’s parents owned Charley’s Café, where Birmingham’s Boutwell Auditorium is now located. Tsimpides said he enjoys the interaction with boaters and fishing enthusiasts who travel by, but there’s one very special plus about living on Logan Martin. “I enjoy the water, and the boat, but I really like the idea that our back yard goes for about 50 miles,” he said. “Not everyone has that.”

NASCAR’s Burton takes time for his other love — fishing Story by Heather Baggett Photos by Brian Schoenhals

He’s made a career out of driving fast. Squeezing his car between two others while going nearly 200 mph is rudimentary. Rubbing fenders, protecting the low lane of the track and waving the checkered flag in victory is all in a day’s work. But Jeff Burton looks just as comfortable with a fishing rod in his hand as he does with his hands gripping the steering wheel of his No. 31 Chevy stock car. The Virginia native grew up hunting and fishing, but his name is now familiar for his abilities behind the wheel of a race car, driving for Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Burton traded in his wheels for a rod and reel and bravely boarded a boat with Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey for a fishing trip with media members on Logan Martin Lake in March. Local anglers Donnie Sims, Rusty Burroughs and Dale McCullars guided the group and scoped out spots where they thought the fish would be biting.

Continued on Page 44 Jeff Burton, left, and Rick Humphrey, right, fished with guide Donnie Sims on Logan Martin Lake in March. While Burton is accustomed to fishing, Humphrey said the trip in March was his first time fishing on the lake in a number of years.

Off the track After several hours on the lake, Burton talked about his love for fishing over lunch with media members. “I grew up fishing and hunting, shooting skeet,” Burton said. “It was a big part of what we did. I’ve got two brothers, Ward, obviously, and my middle brother, Brian. He’s the biggest outdoorsman. My middle brother, he loves to fish. He and I like to fish more than we like to hunt.” Burton said he doesn’t get out on the water as much as he used to, with a busy schedule being the main culprit. “I used to fish a lot,” he said. “When my kids were younger, I worked really hard to work my schedule – we had a boat, and we spent a lot of time in the Bahamas fishing, diving for lobsters. “The kids didn’t have school, and I worked my schedule so we could go down there. We kind of lived down there for one summer. That was just incredible. It was a great time. It was a lot of fun, but we’re busier now. The kids are busier, but I’m busier, and we just can’t do that anymore.” Humphrey can relate. While he

wouldn’t characterize himself as an avid fisherman, the North Carolina native said he and his wife used to have more time on the water than they do now. “My wife and I had a ski boat, a leisure boat, and then about three years ago, we had a son,” Humphrey said after the fishing venture. “And about 19 months after that, we had a daughter, so we don’t have a boat. I haven’t been on the lake in probably three or four years. This is the first time I’ve fished on the lake in probably 10 or 12 years.” While Humphrey didn’t reel in a string of fish, he said he enjoyed the morning on the water. “I enjoyed it,” he said. “I don’t know enough about it, and when I can go with someone who knows where the fish are, I certainly do enjoy that. And today, having those folks with us that knew about where to go and where to find the fish, that made it a little easier.” For Burton, his schedule and that of his children keep him pretty busy when he’s not at the racetrack. “Honestly, with my schedule and then having a 13-yearold with all the things a 13-year-old has to do and an 8year-old with all the things they have to do, we don’t have as much time to do it like we used to,” Burton said. “So we don’t do a whole lot of it.” And when Burton is at the racetrack, he likes to focus on racing and not trying to squeeze in a fishing trip like some other drivers do. “When I go to the race, I go to race,” he said. “I should do that; I should take more advantage of that, but when I’m at a race, I’m there to race. And I don’t really do anything else. I regret that because I’ve missed the opportunity to do a lot of things that were offered to me, but at the end of the day, I’m here to race.”

Cleaning the lake, one ton at a time Story by Elsie Hodnett Photo by Brian Schoenhals

Several hundred volunteers removed close to 9 tons of trash, not counting tires, making this year’s annual Logan Martin Lake Protection Association lake cleanup a resounding success. Volunteers were treated to mostly good weather during the week-long cleanup that ran the first week in April. The annual cleanup is part of the Alabama Power Company “Renew Our Rivers” program, which involves thousands of volunteers and takes place on many lakes in Alabama and the Southeast. “We cleaned 8.9 tons of trash in eight or nine of the dumpsters,” said Bud Kitchin, chairman of the annual LMLPA lake cleanup. Kitchin said that number was up from last year, when 7.4 tons of actual trash and 10 tons of tires were removed from Logan Martin Lake. The amount of tires removed during this year’s cleanup was not immediately available. “The pontoon boat participation this year was at an all-time high,” Kitchin said. Kitchin said he believes that because the lake water level was higher this year than in previous years for the cleanup, it allowed more volunteers to put their boats in the water to assist with the cleanup. Although the higher water levels allowed more boat participation, there were mixed feelings on whether the water levels helped or hindered the cleanup. “It hindered the workers that walked the banks, but I think it helped the people with barges,” said Johnny Beavers, Clear Creek Marina captain for the cleanup. Melissa Daniel, cleanup captain at The Yacht Club, said the water level did not allow shoreline volunteers to get into some areas. “I believe the higher water level definitely hindered the cleanup because there was less trash exposed,” said Ron Vaughn, cleanup captain at Poor House Marina. “I only got two tires this year, which is strange because I have gotten 30 to 40 tires in each of the past several years.” Kitchin said volunteers cleared out a number of large trash objects, including a box freezer, barrels, hot water heaters, misplaced docks and numerous other items. Beavers said volunteers found one partially sunk bass boat with about 4 inches of the top showing, and several large floats and two large foam sail boats. Vaughn said there were some “suspicious” items in the dumpster, such as a wheelbarrow this year and a couch last year, but they are unsure if those came from the lake or someone’s garage. Kitchin said he wanted to thank the six collection sites for hosting the dumpsters at those locations and Veolia Environmental Services for providing the dumpsters for the cleanup free of charge. The collection sites included Lakeside Landing, Yacht Club, Clear Creek Marina, Poor House Branch Marina, Riverside Marina and Woods Surfside Marina.

Hundreds of volunteers removed close to 9 tons of trash, not counting tires, from the shoreline and waterways of Logan Martin Lake. Volunteers gathered Saturday, April 4, for the final day of the cleanup. After a four-hour cleaning blitz, they met at Lakeside Landing for the annual cleanup picnic. “For the picnic, Royal Sausage donated Boston butts and Royal sausage dogs, Buffalo Rock donated drinks, Golden Flake donated chips, and Lakeside Landing assisted with ice and buns,” he said. “And Steve Shafer did great with the picnic entertainment. The crowd really loved him.” Kitchin said local civic organizations and clubs participated in the cleanup efforts, and everyone had a good time. “It was a very successful cleanup,” he said. “Everything went very well.”

Preparing for the BIG party Story by Elsie Hodnett They come from near and far, drawn by thoughts of good food, good fellowship, and great music. They stroll through the streets of historic downtown Pell City, listening to strains of music or browsing through the numerous booths offering a variety of merchandise or scrumptious food choices. The kid’s area offers rides and other children’s activities, along with booths geared toward children. For thousands of people, the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce Annual Hometown Block Party is the place to be. “This is a very successful event each year,” said Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce executive director Lynn Batemon. The Ninth Annual Hometown Block Party is Friday, June 5, and will kickoff at 5 p.m. Admission to the Hometown Block Party is free, and it is a non-alcoholic event. Batemon said there are a few changes to this year’s event.

Lakeside Living Woods Surfside Marina

“We have had six music stages in the past,” she said. “But some were so close together the sound carried over to other stage areas. This year, we will have four stages.” Hometown Block Party chairwoman Pam Adamson said the stages will feature the Style Band, the Leverton Brothers Band, an Impersonators Stage (Kenny Chesney, Elvis, Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty), and an Inspirational Stage featuring Steve Shafer, Harvest Praise Team with Joey Kay, and Mothers to Daughters. “We have had several food vendors and non-food vendors sign up to attend this year,” Batemon said. Batemon said food choices will include lemonade, funnel cakes, shaved ice, hotdogs, nachos, cotton candy, peanuts (both boiled and roasted), Polish sausage, Philly cheesesteak, fish, cheese fries, fried Twinkies, barbecue, ice cream, popcorn, drinks, and much more. Vendor booths include information booths, art for children, exotic reptiles, boats, paint-on tattoos, purses, billfolds, shoes, give-aways, and much more. “We usually have a wide selection of food, information and merchandise for attendees to choose from,” Batemon said. “We are expecting similar vendors to last year’s Block Party. There is enough variety that everyone can find something to their taste.” Batemon said they are hoping for good weather for this year’s event. “We are hoping for a big crowd and great weather,” she said. “There is something for everyone at the Block Party, and everyone has a great time.”

While the real estate market continues to slide nationally, there are still opportunities for people in this area to acquire lakefront property at a more-thanreasonable price. Logan Landing on Paul Bear Bryant Road in Alpine on the Talladega County side of Logan Martin Lake, had been a park since at least the mid-1980s, according to owner Bob Copper. “We bought it in April, and there had been three or four other owners before that. We bought it with the intention of turning it into a resort with cabins and for recreational vehicles.” And they have done just that and somewhat more. Logan Landing now comprises a gated community with a pool, clubhouse, dock, boat ramp, beach, private fishing lake, chapel, hiking trails and numerous other amenities. “We take care of the grounds and the security, so all you have to do is just relax and enjoy yourself,” he said. The cabins are each custom built on the customer’s design by Athens Plant Homes in Athens, Texas. “We have various floor plans available to choose from,” Copper explained. “They generally run between $35,000 and $75,000 based on the size and features you want. Once you pick out your floor plan, carpet, furnishings, window treatments and everything else, it usually takes four to six weeks for delivery. Then we set it on the lot and it’s ready to be slept in in just a

couple of days. We’ve got 10 of them up right now.” The cabins can be fully furnished at purchase or completely empty, depending on what the customer wants. In addition to the 10 owned cabins, there are also two show cabins that are about to go on the market. Both are fully furnished with all appliances, heating and air conditioning and landscaping already in place. “You can also pick out your own blinds, window treatments, ceiling fans, washer and dryer set up, whatever. It’s really fun.” The cabins are made of Hearty-Plank, which is low maintenance and termite resistant. The are augured into the ground and rated at 90-mile-per-hour wind code. For those who don’t want the washerdryer option, there is a laundry facility on the site as well. So far, there are 150 developed lots at Logan Landing, and there is another, undeveloped 80 acres across the lake that Copper also owns. “We also own camper

Lakeside resort and RV lots, which take up about a third of the lots we have,” he said. These lots run between $19,900 to $49,900. All lots are owner financed, usually with a small down payment of about 10 percent or so and payments drawn out over five, 10 or 15 years. “There’s no application or credit check,” he said. “Put the money down, and it’s yours.” “The idea is to fill up with people who want to own a place at the lake. Most people that own lake or beach property go there maybe three times per year. They come here every weekend. We leave everything set up for them, and we’re in a gated community in the middle of nowhere. We’re convenient to Birmingham and Atlanta. We’re not right next door to a Wal-Mart, but if you need one, you can be there in about 20 minutes.” The area consists of about 1,200 feet on Alpine Bay on Logan Martin Lake, including a regular beach, a dog beach and a 15-acre private fishing lake stocked with bass, catfish

From Page 56 and bream. There are also organized activities just about every weekend, ranging from karaoke to crafts to kids’ paddle boat races.” For those looking for just a weekend get-away, Copper said, “our owners are given the option to join a rental pool, but most don’t because they’re here too often. We do have five or six campers available for rent, however.” And the people who do come up every weekend tend to get to know each other. “If you don’t like other people, you’re probably not going to

like it very much here. We’re a very sociable group. I talked to a guy from Birmingham the other day who said he never talks to his neighbors at home, but here he can’t get off the lot without talking to someone. People are always cooking out and offering food. You never see kids out in Birmingham, but here they’re out riding their bikes and fishing. It’s a very family oriented lifestyle for people with kids.” There is always staff on duty, and the facilities also include a bath house, laundry facilities and a camp store.
