A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

British aid worker kidnapped in Afghanistan By Heidi Vogt and Rahim Faiez Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan — Four aid workers including a British woman were kidnapped in Afghanistan as election officials

ordered recounts in seven provinces after last week’s parliamentary vote, raising further concerns of misconduct and fraud during the polls. Meanwhile, two NATO troops, whose nationalities were not announced, were killed in a bomb

attack in the volatile south, the alliance said Sunday. The British aid worker and three Afghan colleagues were ambushed as they traveled in two vehicles in northeastern Kunar province. Police fought a gunbattle with the kidnappers near the

attack site before the assailants fled, Kunar police chief Khalilullah Zaiyi said. Steven O’Connor, communications director for Development Alternatives Inc., a global consulting company based in the Washington, D.C., area, said late

Sunday its employees, including a British national, were involved. Britain’s Foreign Office in London said it could “confirm that a British national has been abducted in Afghanistan. We are working closely with all the relevant local authorities.”

work Continued from Page 1A military school in Tennessee in 1964. His educational interests later took him to Mississippi State University and to Jacksonville State University, where he majored in history and minored in political science; he also has, not surprisingly, 18 hours of library science under his belt. But it’s the liberal arts background that makes him most helpful around the stacks, he said. “You’re kind of familiar with certain topics, and if people ask about them, then you’ve heard about them or know about them” and can answer the person’s question, he said. But drawing on his own educational background doesn’t happen as often as the times when he just has to know how the library works and is organized. “Usually when people come in here they’re looking for basic information,” he explained. “When you’re working the floor, you ask ‘Can I help you?’ It’s a dialogue.” Other times, he said, they help him, such as by describing why they liked, or didn’t care for, a particular book. Striplin then stores that information away for the time other patrons ask about the

Sometimes, he only has to help someone find a book. “I’ve put enough (books) up that I can start ‘em off.” When he’s not helping patrons, Striplin is rounding up books and magazines the library keeps for sale in a corner of the main floor. He also walks over to the post office twice a day for pick-up and deliveries. “There’s some things we have to mail out, like overdue notices, although electronic mail is creeping up on that,” he said. Maintaining books’ useable condition is also part of Striplin’s work. He concedes he’s not an expert repairer, though. “I just put some glue down

the spine and say a couple of prayers.” Putting jackets on new books, keeping stacks of copying paper replenished and cleaning DVDs and CDs are part of Striplin’s duties, too. What he likes best about his full-time job is anything that gets him out on the floor moving around, as opposed to sitting behind a desk. “I like working with circulation and putting up books and shelving,” he said. When he’s not up to his elbows in books at the library, one of Striplin’s outside activities is ... membership in a book club. “It just whets your appetite more,” he said of his hours at work, as they relate to time he spends with the book club.

The club meets monthly at the library on 10th Street and he’s been a member about two years. Perhaps in keeping with his liberal arts background, Striplin doesn’t see his personal reading tastes leaning much toward fiction — American and world history occupy preferred spots in his own library — but he does like Hemingway and Steinbeck. “Grapes of Wrath will always be my favorite fiction,” he said.
