re you enjoying the colors this time of year brings to the lakefront areas? The trees alone can be breathtaking, but when their bright red, yellow and orange reflections ripple across the water, it adds even more to the lakeside scenery. I am truly enjoying my strolls through Lakeside Park these days and as I make my rounds, I am noticing that the goose population seems to be down somewhat. This month, Lakeside writer Kenny Farmer gives us an update on that situation and where it’s headed. Maybe with the “don’t feed the geese” warning out there, the situation will take care of itself. We’ll learn how jewelry maker and glass artist Vicki Sims works her magic, taking pieces of plain glass and turning them into gorgeous wearable treasures. I am turning to turkey adventures for my food spread, I know I always have lots of leftovers that I can’t stand to waste. These dishes can easily be put together and frozen and “tote” well, too. They can keep in the freezer long enough for you to recover from “turkey overload” and feel like facing it again. There’s a new coffee shop in town, Lakeside Coffee House & Princess Pastry, and from what writer Chris Norwood tells us, it’s very much on the delectable side and there are all kinds of treats available for special occasions. There’s catering available, too, and on football Saturdays, special Auburn and Alabama cupcakes for your gatherings. And oh yes, there are soups and chili and special muffins and biscuits, too. The Lakeside Ladies Lunch Bunch held their yearly Pink Hair fundraiser once again, and although there’s lots of fun to be had, these gals have a serious mission as well. When club member Kate DeGaris was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, they got busy. The group usually raises about $2,000 in their quest for a cure, making their effort help their friend as well as so many

others who have the disease. Our lake exploring kayaker takes us to meet Sara “Jean” Goodgame, who owns and operates General Lee Marina. She shares lots of history about the area and how her family came to develop the area landmark. And finally, we visit the lakeside home of Larry and Sylvia Tanner, an eclectic and lovely mix of the things they love collecting. The Tanners came to the lake from Douglasville, Ga. and have totally fallen in love with its people and scenery. Here’s hoping this brings you another taste of the people and places that make lakeside living a lifestyle so many cherish!

Senda’s in Mobile roasts all of our beans for us, which is important. and available in four flavors per day. Hot chocolate and happy birthday cupcakes are available daily, and two other flavors are featured each day. “You can check out our menu on Facebook,” Daigle said. “We just started our fall flavor cupcakes, including pumpkin pie, hard cider, pecan pie, carrot cake, s’mores, Irish coffee, and green apple caramel. On Saturdays, we have red velvet for Alabama fans and orange velvet for Auburn fans. We can also do custom flavors.”

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - November 2012

All flavors are available in full size or mini cupcakes, and multiple dozens and assorted packages are available as well. “We do cater events like birthdays, weddings, showers and baby reveals, and you can call ahead for take out,” Daigle said. “We’ll be getting a drivethrough put in in November.” As this goes to press, Lakeside Coffee House & Princess Cupcakes has also begun offering hot soups three days per week. Come in on Mondays for vegetable, Wednesdays for loaded potato and Fridays for chili. Soups come with your choice of a biscuit or muffin. Any uniformed public servant, including law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, active duty military, national guardsmen, game wardens and all other uniformed personnel get a free 16 ounce cup of coffee just for the asking. For the rest of us, a 16 ounce coffee is only $1.50, dropping down to 88 cents during happy hour, which starts at 5:30 p.m. A blended Big Train Frappuccino or fruit smoothie tops out the menu at $3.50. Flavored coffees are also available, with peppermint and peanut butter and chocolate being the most popular. Other specials are posted on Facebook as they become available. They are located on U.S. 231, between Publix and the Pell City Post Office. It is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Traveling the Coosa

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

he pointed out towards the shallow water. “That is barn hill,” Sara “Jean” Goodgame said. “We just called it that because of the barn there.” Now, there aren’t any signs of a barn or even a hill. From the shores of General Lee Campground, you can only see water now. What was once there is now covered by water since Alabama Power Company built the Logan Martin Lake reservoir, but the 78-year-old Pell City native remembers. She was born and raised in Pell City before the lake, before the water, and when the water came her father, Clarence Lee, and her husband, Floyd “Sonny” Goodgame, built General Lee Campground. As I continued my paddling trip down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, I knew I had to stop and

write about the General Lee Campground. It’s one of the oldest campgrounds on the lake, and one of the original owners, Sara, still runs the lake resort. Floyd died only two years ago, May 18, 2010, Sara said. “We lived together 57 years,” she said. “I sure do miss him, too.” I’m always meeting really nice people on the lake and Sara is right up there with the rest. It’s a pleasure listening to her stories, and it’s hard to believe she is nearly 80 years old. I ran into her granddaughter a couple of nights ago before I wrote my column. I described her grandmother as one spunky woman. I mean at 78, and she runs and operates a campground. “I used to move trailers and launch boats for years,” she said.

Sara “Jean” Goodgame is right at home behind the counter of her General Lee Campground store.

In a way, Sara reminded me a lot of my mother, who I lost about two years ago, about the time Sara lost the love of her life. Sara said they built the camp about a year or two after the reservoir was constructed, and she raised her two children there, Craig and Cindy Goodgame. “Back then people were coming in camping, even before it was finished,” she said. “Back then we only charged $2.25

a night. We didn’t really know what we were doing.” She said they learned after 19 people piled in at one campsite. “They all got to camp there one night for only $2.25,” Sara said, shaking her head, as she giggled. She said General Lee is not as popular as it once was, but they still have quite a few visitors, especially during the summer months.

“We have a lot of tent campers,” Sara said. General Lee Campground is also ideal for motor homes and travel trailers. The camp has power, water, electrical and sewer hookups. The camp has about 75 spots available to guests. The campground has a swimming area and boat launch. An old “Gulf ” gas sign still stands on the shore, but the campground does not sell gas any more. General Lee also has a day-use area for picnics. “They fill it up,” Sara said. Sara also runs a little camp store, which has just about anything a camper wants or needs. “If anyone needs anything, they just call me and I come down,” she said. General Lee also offers live bait for anglers wanting to try their luck fishing. Sara said the fishing this year has been great. “It’s been a huge crappie year, big crappie,” she said, showing photos of some large crappie campers had recently netted from the lake. Sara said they have people come from everywhere to camp at General Lee, including one man from Texas and another group from Germany. Camping at General Lee, which has plenty of shade from the old growth hardwood trees scattered throughout the campground, is $20-$22 per night, per camper or tent, plus tax. As for me, I enjoyed my visit with Sara, and I look forward to launching my kayak from there again in the near future, so until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Peace, Love and Pink Hair Friends gather to support breast cancer research By Emily ADAMS Photos by BRAIN SCHOENHALS

O

n a warm autumn day, a group of women gathered to enjoy wine, cheese, friendship, love and – most importantly – the color pink. There were pink balloons, pink name tags, pink necklaces, pink cupcakes, pink clothes and everyone who stopped by was given a pink streak of hair. From the outside, the joyful conversations and spells of roaring laughter sounded like a celebration, and in one respect, it absolutely was. But the Pink Hair Party also held a meaning that reaches much deeper for the women involved.

18

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - November 2012

The party, held at the home of Nelda Copeland in Pell City, was organized to raise money for breast cancer research, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. This year’s Oct. 9 bash marked the third year the group has celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month together. “We’re all in this thing for the goal of helping the cause,” said pink lady Judy Ellison. “A lot of us have either had breast cancer or watched a friend or family member battle it. It’s important that we honor those who were lost, those who are battling it now and those who are in

remission,” she said. The group, which was sanctioned as an official fundraiser for the American Cancer Society this year, has raised more than $2,000 so far, and donations are still coming in. Their efforts were supported by a number of local businesses who donated the wine, cheeses and other goodies for the party. Hairdressers Julie Luker of Trendsetters and Cindy Grimes of Vizible Changes also donated their time to supply the ever-important pink hair that is the foundation of the tradition. The Pink Hair idea began when a group of about 10 ladies gathered for their monthly outing in October 2010. The women stopped by Trendsetters Hair Salon to support a breast cancer fundraiser. They each got pink hair extensions in honor of their close friend, Kate DeGaris, who had breast cancer that was spreading to her arms, legs, spine, liver and lymph nodes. By October of the next year, the women had even more 20

of a desire to support the cause, so they joined with even more friends to host a Pink Hair Wine and Cheese Party, where the group of about 40 women raised $2,500. The effort was, again, in honor of DeGaris, but also to recognize the many other lives that are affected by breast cancer. DeGaris, who said she will have cancer the rest of her life, credits the support of her friends and family for helping her through her experience. “It makes me so happy to see all my friends lend support,” DeGaris said. “My friends and family have been wonderful, and I think that combined with a positive attitude does the trick.” DeGaris said living with cancer is a daily struggle that she gets through with determination and the help of her late mother’s advice. “Four years ago this month, I was given four to six months to live,” she said. “So I started fighting. You have to be a fighter, that’s for sure. A lot of days, I would like to

I’m here for my family, those are my jewels. And I think God left me here for a reason, if nothing else to show people you can fight it.” DeGaris’s daughter, Lydia Pursell, said she is astounded and encouraged by the efforts of the Pink Hair ladies each year. “This group has just built on layers and layers of 22

friends,” she said. “I’m amazed at how much these people love each other through a lot of hard times. It’s special, and it definitely makes you want this type of friendship for your own life.” Pursell said her mother’s experience and that of her mother’s friends reassures her that there is hope for women with breast cancer. “It’s still hard, especially being from a family that has a long history of it,” she said. “But it means a lot to me and reminds me to stay consistent with checkups and teach my daughter how important it is. She doesn’t understand yet. At 8, Saylors just wants to paint her hair pink, but one day she’ll remember this. She’ll remember this pink ribbon symbol forever and know what it means.” The women are already tossing around ideas for next year’s party, which they hope to make the biggest one yet, keeping in mind that no one is ever safe from being affected by cancer themselves. “My biggest thing is that it could happen to anybody,” pink lady Vicki Smith said. “When you wake up in the morning, you never know what the day is going to

have plenty to deal with. There’s always turkey tetrazzini, turkey a la king or even turkey salad, but I set my mind to finding some more interesting ways to use that leftover turkey and I think you’re going to like them. I roasted a close to 20 pound turkey and had enough “left over” from one meal for four to make at least three of these recipes. We’ll do a turkey gumbo recipe that you can alter and play with about as much as you want, using the spices and veggies you prefer and making additions as you see fit-I mean really, what can’t you put in gumbo unless you’re a hard core stick to the standard type. I also found something a little surprising, a green bean and turkey salad that can really pop when you play with the spices a little bit. There’s a Thai Turkey Curry, too, and this one is one to be sure to try. Talk about spicing up the old leftovers! But it’s not hot hot spicy, just adds some interest to something that can be a bit on the bland side. And I decided to add in something a little more traditional, a really good turkey soup that freezes well and weeks after our holidays, can be pulled out of the freezer for a great and quick lunch or dinner. And might I mention that these are recipes that we can keep a little fat and calorie control over and improvise with as well. So have fun, make your own additions and substitutions and let me know how it turns out.

What you do: Heat oil over medium heat in a large Dutch oven. Add chopped vegetables, garlic and ginger and sauté for three to four minutes until softened. Add red curry paste, fish sauce, sugar, coconut milk and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes, add chopped turkey, stir and cook until turkey is hot. (This travels well, too, and is great served over brown rice or noodles!)

Low Fat Thai Turkey Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Calories: 224 per serving Carbs: 16.1 grams (These calorie and carb amounts are given without serving on rice or noodles)

What you do: Place turkey breast in a six quart Dutch oven and cover with water until pan is about ¾ full. (I used low sodium chicken broth). Cut onions in large pieces and slice celery on the diagonal and add to pot. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to medium low. Simmer the turkey stock for two and a half hours. Divide turkey stock into smaller containers and cool in refrigerator. Skim fat from top of cooled turkey stock. Add turkey meat, herbs and spices to cooked turkey stock and return to heat. Bring turkey stock to a boil and add pasta and continue cooking until pasta is tender. Continue cooking on low boil for about 20 minutes. Makes approximately 16 one cup servings.

Not Your Typical Retirement Home Larry and Sylvia Tanner love their ultra-modern oasis By EMILY ADAMS Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

F

rom the moment you spot the bright yellow mailbox in the shape of a 1934 Ford, it’s obvious this lake house isn’t quite like the others – and that’s a welcome observation as Larry and Sylvia Tanner wouldn’t have it any other way. “We’ve always been different,” Larry said. “We’ve never cared for the same things that most everybody else has.

28

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - November 2012

We’re just into anything that’s contemporary, eccentric, modern. Anybody can be traditional.” Somewhere in between biker chic, nautical style and big-city flair, the Tanners found a perfect mix of their favorite things to create an ultra-modern look for their three bedroom, three bathroom house on Logan Martin.

At left: Outdoors, the Tanners enjoy a tiki bar, a plethora of palm trees, an outdoor grilling station and plenty of space for entertaining on warm, summer nights. Above: Larry and Sylvia Tanner

Almost everything in the home was built, rebuilt or altered by the couple, who have always enjoyed unique home décor. “Just about everything we have is one-of-a-kind, from the artwork to the furnishings,” Larry said. “Everybody that comes in our house says ‘This house ought to be in a magazine. I’ve never seen anything like it!’” Their dream lake home didn’t come without some hard work, though. The Douglasville, Ga., natives spent the past six years remodeling the entire house. “We’ve added about 1,200 square feet,” Larry said. “For four years, we came from Georgia every weekend and holiday to work on the house. We never got to enjoy the lake, we just worked.” They added a dining room, master bedroom suite, office, a large downstairs garage space and plenty of other

outdoor details since buying the house. Another major difference is the exterior. What was a log cabin has become a combination of whitewashed wood, metals and gray and white vinyl. “We liked the nautical look so we whitewashed the wood, then we added in some vinyl and metal textures to give it that downtown loft, warehouse look,” Larry said. “It couldn’t have turned out any better, considering we did it all ourselves.” This summer marks two years since they moved to the lake, and the first time since then they have taken time off to enjoy the water. But more projects are just around the corner. This fall, the Tanners plan to add on a “man cave/ entertainment pavilion/garage” and a sun deck over the dock. Also on the list is completing an outdoor kitchen. November 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 29

In the Western room, inspired by saddles that belonged to Larry’s father, Larry constructed a bed using a wagon. A majority of the original parts were left intact, and Larry has built several similar beds for others since.

All the while the pair is continuously building and selling custom cars, motorcycles, trikes and other vehicles through their “Southern Show Cars” business – a hobby they have enjoyed for more than 30 years. “I don’t know if we’ll ever finish up, but we’ve always had projects going on our whole lives,” Larry said. “That’s how we got to where we are today to be able to retire early to God’s Country in Alabama.” Evident throughout their home is a special talent for turning random items into something useful, starting right when you walk through the back door, where a window-lined dining room was added to make space for a large kitchen table. The table isn’t exactly what it seems, though. “Since this was an odd shape in here, I just bought two glass-top coffee tables from IKEA, put some longer legs on them and arranged them in a T-shape. We bought the chairs separate,” Larry explained. The dining room is complete with decorative ledge overhangs near the ceiling and columns made from 2x4s to “add some class” and lead into an open living room and kitchen space, where the distinctive décor continues. The first step to remodeling the living space was to distract the eye from the knotted pine ceilings and floors by painting the walls red, Larry said. “We’re not crazy about wood, so I said ‘Honey, we can 30

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - November 2012

paint the ceiling and do this and that,’ and she said ‘No, we’re not!’” he said. “But once we painted the walls and modernized everything else, all the woodwork doesn’t blow you away like before.” On one side of the room is the kitchen with a counter bar, and on the other is the living room, with a big-screen TV, comfortable seating and an accent wall with a fireplace and a water feature that peeks into the master bedroom. “We wanted to be able to lie in bed and look all through the house,” Larry said. “So I ordered that glass feature and made an existing window opening the right size for it.” The master suite has an open bedroom and bathroom space, which works great since it’s just the two of them. “We like everything open,” Larry said. “Even the toilet room has a window in the door.” The purple-carpeted bedroom is filled with Indian artwork and even more specially designed furniture. “I’m into building stuff instead of buying stuff,” Larry said. “And mainly that’s because we can never find things we like in our price range.” They used an IKEA bookcase for a headboard and another coffee table with drawers added on as a vanity for Sylvia. “I dream a lot, and when I see things in my dreams, I draw a little sketch the next morning and build it,” Larry said. “A bed like this could cost $2,000, and I may have

$250 in it.” Attached to the room is an outdoor patio with tables and chairs complemented by a straight-on view of the water. “We wanted to be able to sit out here in the evenings and watch the lake, and we designed it to give the illusion that the water keeps going under the house, which it really does look like,” Larry said. In the bathroom, there is a jetted tub, walk-in closets and an extra large, marble-tiled shower. Between the shower and tub is glass block, where Larry eventually wants to add a neon-colored light to shine through into the bedroom. “We’re really into neons,” he said. “They’re on the dock and all in the house. They look great at night with everything lit up.” Back through the living room to the other side of the house is a guest bathroom and two themed guest bedrooms that are a departure from the home’s modern design. The first room is designed around Sylvia’s collection of antique dolls and stuffed bears, and the other is a Western room with a bed Larry built from an old wagon. “Everything we’ve got is a doggone story,” Larry said. “We’re really not into antiques, apart from her collectibles, but when my dad passed away, the only thing he had to his name was basically two saddles. They sat in the closet for years, and I knew I’d never get rid of them, so I just came up with this Western room.” They found the wagon about 20 years ago for a steal at

$300 and turned it into a bed with most all the original parts in tact. Larry has built five wagon beds for others since. Next to the bedrooms is an added-on office that displays pictures and keepsakes from the Tanners’ many years of building custom cars. A converted gas pump became a display case, and an Italian barber chair was recovered with Harley Davidson leather to round out the space. Pictures on the walls prove the couple has built some of everything, even motorized Radio Flyer wagons. Larry said their creations were the key to their early retirement. “I worked nights as a truck driver, and Sylvia worked early mornings at the post office,” he said. “Whatever we were building, we worked split shifts to finish it, and then we’d load it up and take it to a car show and sell it. We went literally seven days a week, at least 16 to 17 hours a day for close to 20 years, just to be able to get ahead. It wasn’t a job, because we loved doing it. It was a hobby that ended up helping us tremendously financially.” It also earned Sylvia the nickname “Scruff ‘n’ Buff,” Larry said, adding with a smile that she is the best employee he’s ever had. The fun continues outside the house, where the Tanners have plenty of space for entertaining the big summer lake crowds. It begins with a large grilling area, continues to a deck with tables, seating and a tiki bar. The couple also built an outdoor shower under the deck that is used daily

Plenty of natural light flows into the living room and an added-on dining area. The room boasts leather furniture, a lighted crystal feature and custom-built overhangs above the columns to show off original artwork.

during the summer months. Down by the dock, they have a fire pit, two Jet-Skis, a 34-foot offshore boat and a purple and yellow pontoon boat – which, naturally, is full of neon lights that shine brightly on the lake at night. “People on this lake know us as the Party House,” Larry said. “They know when we want guests and we’re having a party, we kick on all the neons. A lot of people will show up here and we have a great time, and then when the lights go off, it’s time for us to go to bed.” Hosting parties and meeting new people is just part of what Larry and Sylvia enjoyed during their first real summer on the water. They also took part in the typical activities – floating around, throwing back some cold ones, cruising on the boat and hanging out with friends. While Sylvia didn’t say much about the house, she had plenty to share about the perks of lake life. “I drove three Interstates into work every day in Georgia, so I like to be able to say now that I’m going to town,” she 32

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - November 2012

said. “Looking forward to going to town is a crazy thing, but I’m glad to be out in the country enough to have some privacy and avoid all the traffic. We have year round water here, and it’s not as crowded as other parts of the lake. We’ve met some great friends, and we feel like it’s a safe area.” Larry said retiring to the lake was a natural choice for the water lovers, and they quickly grew to love everything about it. “It was icing on the cake for our lifestyle to retire on the lake,” he said. “It’s the best thing that could have ever happened to us. You’re in the country, with great people, on the water, got a shop big enough to keep building our toys. And really just sitting out here looking at the water is psychologically a remarkable feeling. It’s like, ‘Wow, how did we ever get so lucky?’ It’s one of those things that was just meant to be.” Contact Emily Adams at eadams@dailyhome.com.

Lakeside Update

Lakeside – The ‘Goosance’ Officials ponder solutions for large numbers By Kenny Farmer Photos by BOB CRISP

W

hile the reason for the increasing number of geese in the Pell City area is not clear, Mayor Bill Hereford says that complaints about the birds have “significantly decreased” in recent weeks. However, former state conservation commissioner for the Alabama Department of Natural Resources Barnett Lawley calls the current number of geese in the area “a real problem.” Several options are being considered in the removal of the birds that many consider a nuisance. Lawley says the trapping and relocating of the birds is a good option, but it has to be an ongoing thing. Each time people are brought in to trap and relocate the birds, the cost can be between $6,000 and $7,000. Lawley says that is a small price to pay, especially considering the possibility of children getting sick because of the ongoing goose problem. “That’s a great way to do it,” said Lawley of the trapping and relocating. “The city is really going to have to be careful how they regulate the hunting within the city, when giving permits to discharge a firearm,” said Lawley. “I think it should be an organized group that they use, where they gather at the airport, at the civic center or on the golf course. I don’t recommend giving every homeowner the right to discharge.” Hereford said he has yet to issue any permits, but if he does, he will rely on the judgment of his police chief concerning who would be allowed to hunt the geese within the city limits. “I don’t like the idea of discharging a firearm within the city limits,” said Hereford. “It is against the law. Although I can make exceptions, I would do so reluctantly.” Hereford prefers the solution of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for handling the roundup of the geese. “That’s what they (USDA) do,” said Hereford. “We certainly don’t have anybody employed by the city qualified to do that kind

of thing.” Hereford says that he hopes incoming mayor Joe Funderburg will consider the option of the USDA roundup. Hereford said the idea that he thinks might be the ultimate answer is that of addling the eggs of the geese. The website for the Humane Society of the United States defines goose egg addling as “treating eggs with corn oil or by removing the eggs from the nest.” The website goes on to say, “It (addling) limits the number of geese in places people don’t want more. And it frees adult geese from tending flightless goslings, so they can be encouraged to move themselves elsewhere before summer conflicts are greatest.” “That’s a nice and peaceful way of doing it,” said Hereford. Lawley is not sure why so many geese have come to Pell City, but that there are two major flyways, the Mississippi flyway and the Eastern Atlantic flyway, and that the geese in Pell City are probably spinoffs from both. However, he believes that it is more likely that the geese came from the Mississippi flyway. “Geese don’t know where the city limits are,” said Hereford. “This is a lake-wide problem. Nationally, it is a problem in various communities that are in the flyway. Lawley said that the geese here now seem to be permanent residents. Any migratory bird here after February until the beginning of September is no longer considered migratory by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, therefore not under the protection of federal guidelines. That is what allows the state to allow permits to hunt geese that cause damage to crops, private property, etc. Lawley says it is currently hunting season, so a permit is not required to hunt the geese. “It’s a real problem,” said Lawley. “Especially when they congregate in large numbers as they have done in the city park. Then you’ve got the airport where they’ve created another hazard, other than health, in flying in front of the airplanes.” Lawley added, “A few geese are nice, but we’ve just got too many.” November 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 33

Art by the Water

Glass artist Vicki Sims loves color and contrast in her wearable art.

One of a Kind is the Way for Vicki Sims Glass becomes art and jewelry in her hands By AZIZA JACKSON Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

L

akeside Artist Vicki Sims’ magnetic attraction to different colors and textures can be found in her work with fused glass jewelry. Upon moving to Alabama 10 years ago with her husband, Ron, Sims said that purchasing a house with a basement for an art studio was definitely a priority. The couple finally found their perfect house in Riverside overlooking Logan Martin Lake.

36

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - November 2012

“I don’t specifically draw inspiration from the lake, but it certainly has an influence on my art in general,” Sims said. “The tranquility of a lake community provides a creative place to work. Sims said that she has recently been working with beautiful pieces of swirl glass that remind her of the movement of water. “I try to keep the feeling in the way I cut the

glass and create the finished piece,” Sims said. “The vibrant colors that are available for fused glass are certainly an inspiration.” But before Sims found comfort in making fused glass jewelry, she and Ron, who is a potter, were also art explorers who visited different exhibitions and were very active in the arts in their former community of LaGrange, Ga. “I was exposed to fused glass during a clay buying trip to Georgia and pursued some introductory classes there,” Sims said. “I’ve also done some more advanced study at a studio in Birmingham,” she said. “Together, Ron and I now enjoy participating at different venues including the ArtScapes Gallery in Pell City.” Weaving has also been an interest for Sims, who believes textures and colors bring out the most in even the most basic things. “I had great art teachers in junior high and high school. They instilled in me an appreciation for different avenues of the arts,” Sims said. “I was particularly interested in weaving involving multiple textures and color of various fibers. Still today I have a loom and enjoy a change from my glass work from time to time. But, my emphasis has been fused with glass jewelry.” Sims said that she has been successful with her heart-designed pendants and crosses. “I will definitely have more ready for the Christmas season,” she said. “I concentrate on straightforward geometric shapes.” Her work can be found at the ArtScapes Gallery located in downtown Pell City, and Judy Potter’s Cabin on Cedar Lane. “I have been designing fused glass jewelry for about eight years now,” she said. “I began working with a microwave kiln to see how I liked the process before I decided to invest more. I really enjoyed the way the glass fused together.”

Creating her own designs is a process Sims loves.

“I have always loved jewelry and glass objects, so I decided to take some classes doing fused glass jewelry and really enjoyed the process and freedom of designing individual ‘one of a kind’ pieces,” she said. Sims said she purchased a glass kiln in order to refine her production and the quality of her jewelry. “I have fun selecting interesting patterns of glass and embellishing them to make each one special,” Sims said. “Sometimes the glass just speaks

out to me as I cut out my design. Each piece is assembled and fired at 1,650 degrees for approximately four hours, cooling down to room temperature and I cannot wait to see the results. Each firing is exciting and continues to be a learning process.” Sims said the hands-on process usually takes about an hour. “I usually make several pieces at one time,” Sims said. “I’ll cut several pieces of the background glass, then cut the clear cover glass and select the accent

pieces. The glass is then assembled with a special glue to hold it in the composition I’ve decided on. The pieces are then placed in the kiln and will fire and cool for approximately 10 hours.” Sims said she currently has a show coming up in Memphis, Tenn., and is working on commissions as well as new jewelry for the upcoming Christmas season, an open house at the Cabin on Cedar Lane and the November changeover at ArtScape Gallery. “Art is an object that affects my emotions and feelings in different forms such as music, dance, paintings, works of clay, diverse creative works of mixed media and of course glass, only to name a few,” Sims said.

Some of Sims’ newest pieces reflect the movement of the water on Logan Martin Lake. Other pieces have geometric designs and fanciful flourishes.

Setting the Mood for Thanksgiving Appealing to all five senses By ELSIE HODNETT Photos by BOB CRISP

F

or Renee Lilly, owner of Lilly Designs Inc. in Pell City, entertaining and preparing a table and a delicious meal is an art form. “Much of the fun of inviting friends and family to join my husband, Kevin, and me is the holiday meal preparations,” she said. “I like to keep in mind the five senses, and create a theme and mood that appeals and satisfies all five senses.” Lilly said the elements to a table setting include furniture, linen, crockery, glassware, cutlery, flowers and decorations, and candles.

“Having the right furniture is the first step, and you want to choose timeless pieces that won’t date,” she said. Lilly said linen has been used for centuries, and table linens are a very important aspect of planning and design. In addition to table linens and tablecloths, you can also incorporate napkins and chair covers. “The art of a successful table setting is to be clever with the crockery, so mix and match and adorn your dinner table to suit the mood of the occasion,” she said. Lilly said to place cutlery appropriate to the table setting and to the food being served. “Flowers and decorations are the most important element to the table setting,” she said. “I like to use organic flowers and fruit that change with the season.” Lilly said candles have become decorative features in and of themselves. “Candles bring a flattering glow to the table and the diners,” she said.

aking real estate her career choice in the early 1980s, broker/owner Kathy Dill serves customers in Moody, Odenville, Leeds, Pell City and St. Clair County. “I have helped many families over the years to find that perfect place to call home,” Dill said. “I have had the privilege of helping many repeat clients to resell their homes and find another whether they are downsizing or have outgrown the one they’re in.” Dill said it makes her feel good knowing her customers are pleased with her service and that she did her very best for each customer. “It is a joy to be able to hand over the key to a couple for the first time and to see the joy of owning their first home,” Dill said. “And to know I had a small part in making that dream come true.” Dill said she has seen many changes in the real estate market including interest rates of 18-21 percent to today’s low 2.875 percent. “There’s no better time than now to buy or sell,” Dill said. Dill has short sale and foreclosure experience and, with the latest information, is happy to help customers purchase or sell their property, she said. “I believe getting homes priced right to sell should be any 54

owner’s goal,” Dill said. “Through searching and staying abreast of the market we can achieve that goal.” A broker/owner at Parkway Realty in Moody, Dill is a member of the St. Clair Association of Realtors and her office is located on the Parkway in Moody and works with partner Johnnie Atchison. Dill is from the Moody area and has been married to her husband William for 43 years. The couple has two children. Their son Wade and daughter-in-law Maria live in New York and serve in full-time ministry. Dill describes their daughter Amy as being “a great joy to us.” Dill says her Jack Russell, Dodee, keeps things jumping around the house and after a long day can make her laugh and forget her troubles. She says she loves the outdoors, traveling to Gatlinburg and hiking in the mountains. Dill is a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Leeds and loves to participate in volunteer work where she “can help others to come to know what the Bible teaches.” Dill can be reached by calling her at 205-966-1864 or calling her office at 205-640-2375. She can be reached by email at kathydill@gmail.com. “I would love the opportunity to assist you with all your real estate needs,” Dill said.
