elcome to “that” time of year, when we anticipate the change of seasons and experience the burst of color reflected in these Logan Martin shores and see a different kind of “ah” reflected in the waters. The sweet gums and maples show their colors first, with their bright splashes of red and yellow that ripple through the waters among the shore line. By the end of the month, fall will have set in within our lakeside retreat, and there’s still plenty to enjoy and do as the season sets in. Our October Lakeside Living takes you to the home of Carl and Bonnie Swinford Ponder whose warm welcome includes showing the many changes and renovations they have undertaken in the past 14 years in their home. Located in the Lincoln area, their home now includes five bedrooms and six baths, plenty of room to accommodate their children, grandchildren and friends. The couple included a kitchen “re-do,” added space including a very much loved sunroom and also a covered porch that’s their personal favorite and one of the other features of their home that suits them so well is having quiet water to enjoy between their shoreline and an island as well as access to Logan Martin’s main channel as well. Lakeside writer Emily Adams shares their lakeside living story with you this month. Then we’re off to the brand new spot called Lulu’s Barbecue on Alabama 34 in Pell City, where it’s all about good old home cooking and family. Lulu Bedford leads the way on this family pursuit, and has a long term background in making herself at home in the kitchen. She got her start with her mother at age 11, learning alongside her at her job as a cook at one of the long term dining traditions in Pell City, The Pell City Steak House. Bedford went on to work in the kitchen at Coosa Valley Elementary School for 24 years, and goodness knows how many children she fed during her tenure there. At Lulu’s, you’ll find something different, along with the favorites everyone loves, from fried barbecue riblets, to those special sides everyone loves like hand whipped potatoes and other veggies to burgers and hot dogs and specials along the way. Lulu’s can cater and provide food for groups as well as take out or dining in with “the family.” She and her family invite you to stop in and have a taste of their style of homemade fare. Then we’re off to meet our young artist, Hayden Tumlin, whose artistic talents are bringing her all kinds of attention. Hayden is a sophomore at Pell City High School and credits her art teacher, Kelly Whittington, with helping her to hone creative aspirations. Hayden is working in lots of mediums and using a variety of subjects in her work and we can only imagine where these early art interests may take her. Lakeside write Shane Dunaway introduces you to Hayden and her very own art world. 4

You’ll meet Karen (Hollis) and husband Mark Vardaman who have taken their interest in home décor and creating one of a kind home accents to establish a brand new business, Studio V Door which offers personalized gifts and door décor. Be it a seasonal touch for your own home or a personalized gift for someone else, the Vardamans are a team that can get the job done from start to finish. Most are built upon a wooden base, and finished with your specialized interests and or the Vardamans’ established cache of experience. Specialty wreaths are made with storm doors in mind and other items are created to suit that certain space and interest as well. The paddler takes you to a new and updated Woods Surfside Marina where there’s boat storage and casual space for enjoying the marina when you’re not out on the water and boat sales, too. After launching his craft from Woods, the paddler once again shows us how people come to Logan Martin from near and far for its generous recreational and relaxing offerings. And as for me, I turned my pots and pans to stirring up some chili, it’s just that time and I made my first pots of the season for this issue. My favorite? Well, of course it’s my own adaptation of a classic approach, but using ground turkey instead of beef to lower our fat and all that, but lots of veggies you might not think to add in when you’re filling that pot. And as for toppings, the ideas are practically endless. Welcome to fall, welcome to our October Lakeside issue and we hope to see you out and about enjoying this special season on the lakefront.

A Place of Her Own Lulu’s BBQ is open for business Story by CHRIS NORWOOD Photos by BOB CRISP

ulu Bedford is the owner of Pell City’s newest barbecue establishment, but she says she is no stranger to the food business. “I’ve done this all my life,” she said, “and now I’m taking it on my own. I have a passion for life, I guess. And this is something that I’ve been doing on the side for a while.” Bedford starting cooking beside her mother at the age of 11, at the Pell City Steak House. “I haven’t stopped

since. I’ve worked in the lunch room at Coosa Valley Elementary School for 24 years, and I’m about to retire with 25 years. I love working with, and serving the public. I’m a people person, so this is not new to me.” Lulu’s is in the space formerly occupied by Shield’s Barbecue, which made it ideal for her operation. “I was going down the road here and saw the space available. I looked at it the first time and it just had everything we needed,” she said.

Lulu Bedford sends a big welcome your way to her new establishment for homecooked meals from her kitchen. She, family and friends are happy to take your order!

She and a group of dedicated family and friends repainted and redecorated the place themselves. “Cindy Millender helped us, and my daughters Saniquia Johnson and Angela Bedford, my son Jeffrey Johnson, my niece Iyana Allen and my nephew Isaiah all helped out.” 8

Other vital folks early on included Kristen McGraw, Kaitlyn Millender, Matt McGowan, Mario McGowan, Ashley Dupree, Eddie Knight and Lenell Keller. Antoinette Neely helped pick out the colors, and also sells homemade organic cookies at the register.

Obviously barbecue is the house specialty, but the bill of fare consists of a little bit of everything. The fried riblets are perhaps the most popular item at the moment, but 99 cent barbecue will be returning soon and is also expected to be a big success. “It’s a smaller version, not quite as much food, but it will still fill you up,” she said. “We also do veggies, we’ve seen a high demand for that, like pintos, cabbage, cornbread, peas and handmade creamed potatoes. People are just knocking down the door for our

To go orders and catering are available, as well as recurring large party events, including the Pell City High School Touchdown Club. Lulu’s also sells Blue Bell Ice Cream, and “the occasional cobbler or strawberry shortcake. We did have homemade cakes every day for a while, too, but there just wasn’t enough time. I’ll probably be adding those back in after I retire from the school.” 10

New items are added to the menu almost every week, including hot wings, cheeseburgers and other specialty items. “I really need to stop,” Bedford said. The summer was winding down, and Marcia, who is a teacher at Paine Elementary School in Trussville, was not only getting ready to go back to work but for the 2013 college football season. Marcia said she and her husband Jay are proud owners of

Alabama Crimson Tide season football tickets. “We come here about every weekend,” she said. “When school is out, I come to the lake.” She and her husband have a place at Rif Raf Acres, which borders the Rabbit Branch slough on Logan Martin Lake. “A lot of people live here full-time,” she said. “This is our third summer here. It’s real convenient. We’re right off 231.” Marcia said she likes watching the variety of birds along Logan Martin Lake. She noticed that I was trying to get

close enough to a group of ducks for a photograph. No luck that day. Marcia said she had two grown sons, working and attending college. I couldn’t help but ask her if one of her sons attended Auburn University. I sort of knew the answer from the crimson and white boat and big “University of Alabama” flag in front of their lake home, but I did make Marcia laugh. By the way, she emphatically said, “No!” I met Marcia shortly after I left from Woods Surfside Marina. Jerry Woods, the owner of the marina graciously allowed me to use his marina as a starting point for my latest trip along Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. It’s been years since I’ve visited Woods Surfside Marina and it looks great. I couldn’t believe how it has grown. Jerry and his employees have really worked hard to make the marina a place where people like to come and 14

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

enjoy themselves. “We’ve been up here about five years,” said Bain Brown of Oneonta. “We’re normally up here Friday through Monday…We own a place on Coosa Island.” But Brown said they store their pontoon boat at Woods Surfside Marina. “If we give them 15 minutes of warning, they are waiting on us with our boat,” he said. “They are good folks to work with.” Marcia also said they store their boat at Woods Surfside Marina, and she bragged about their service as well. “They are good, honest people,” she said. Woods Surfside Marina stores about 230 boats for their customers. The marina is only open to their customers. Nick Standridge said he is a certified mechanic technician at Woods Surfside Marina. Woods Surfside Marina repairs Mercury and Yamaha outboard motors and Marcruiser inboard motors. The marina also sells Bennington pontoon boats.

Jerry said they try hard to make their customers happy. A former traveling salesman for Starkist Seafood/Hines Pet Products for 35 years, Jerry said he is glad to be off the road and at the marina. He handles the sales at the marina. “If you can sell dead fish, you can sell anything,” he joked. He actually trained new sales brokers at his former job. “It was a pretty good career for a long time,” he said. But Jerry said he is glad to be back in Pell City and working on the lake. “This is a slice of heaven,” Jerry said. He said for the past eight years his lakeside business has grown. “In 2006 I had one employee,” Jerry said. “There are 12 of us today.” Jerry said he never really realized the opportunity before him. “I tell everybody I haven’t made a lot of money, but I’ve made a lot of friends. It’s been fun,” he said. “We never realized the opportunity in this thing, but it has continued to grow by leaps and bounds.” When I left Woods Surfside Marina, I paddled toward the point of Rabbit Branch but got sidetracked when I met “the houseboat people.”

They were some great folks--Bob Ellard, Lisa Hobson and Bill Craig. They live in a community of houseboats on Rabbit Branch Point. “I’ve been coming up here 12 to 13 years,” Bob said. “I just enjoy being up here.” Lisa is an amateur photographer. She said the sunsets on Rabbit Branch are beautiful and she has the pictures to prove it. Bill and Lisa said they been coming up to the lake for the past 4-5 years. They joked about Bob’s long-time residency on Logan Martin Lake. “Bob’s been here since the beginning of time,” they joked. Lisa said they like the tranquility, as well as the socializing on the lake. I rolled my kayak for Lisa, and to cool off a bit, before heading back to Surfside after an afternoon of paddling. It was a great trip and I made a bunch of new friends. That’s just lake living I guess. It was also good to see Jerry. Jerry said I could come back and I’m going to take him up on that. I really look forward to exploring more of Rabbit Branch in the near future, so until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Art by the Water

One of Pell City High School sophomore Hayden Tumlin’s colorful pieces of art.

henever she has a free moment or whenever inspiration strikes, it’s a safe bet 15-year-old Pell City native Hayden Tumlin can be found putting a pencil to paper in her sketchbook, using her artistic skills to bring drawings of ballerinas, flowers, birds and faces to life on the page. Tumlin, a sophomore at Pell City High School, began drawing at an early age with one of her best friends, but as she grew older, she decided to build upon this talent when she reached high school. “I’ve drawn my whole life,” Tumlin said. “But seriously, like really trying to draw serious pictures, I’ve been doing this for about a year or so since I started Art I in ninth grade.” One of her more recent drawings of a soldier and American

flag won second place in a state-level Beta Club competition. Tumlin executed the portrait-style drawing in black-andwhite, a medium she said she prefers unless the color palette adds flavor to the drawing. An example of Tumlin using flavor in her work is shown in her drawing featuring a girl with half her face covered in words combined to create a mask effect. “It’s easier to get the values than it is using color,” Tumlin said. “The portrait I did with half the face I felt it would better show the mask part of it if it were in better. It varies on the picture itself, but I mainly work with black-and-white.” During the school year, Tumlin participates in Student Government Association, Beta Club, Key Club and possibly in Scholar’s Bowl before the year is done. Combined with her daily schoolwork and homework, as well as her hobbies of playing guitar, piano and singing, Tumlin admits it’s hard to find time in the schedule for art outside of her art class. “I do my schoolwork first of all,” Tumlin said. “I try to get it done without interruptions so I can have time. In the summer,

The young artist credits her art teacher, Kell Whittington, with helping her find her talents.

I don’t really do anything but this, but during the school week, I normally find time for art on the weekends and as I’m getting ready to go to bed as sort of a way to wind down.” Michelle Tumlin, mother of Hayden and owner of Monkey Bizniss in Pell City, made it clear those weren’t always the only times her daughter works on a piece of art. “Sometimes inspiration will hit her at 18

around 1 a.m.,” she said. The younger Tumlin agreed, and said sometimes she’s been up until 3 a.m. finishing a particular art project. While she doesn’t currently have anything on display at the Artscape Gallery in Pell City, Tumlin, a member of the Southern Cultural Arts Foundation, does have one of her clay pottery pieces she made in her art class that is currently on tour.

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

“In art, we had to go through different parts,” Tumlin said. “I’ve had to do a sculpture and work with clay. We try to learn all different types of art, but once I get into AP Art, I’m able to do the type of art that’s best for me.” A key factor in Tumlin’s success, aside from her drive and passion for nearly anything she touches, is her ability to find the humor and positives in her failures, something that comes few and far between. “I’ve had to make clay bowls and pots for art class,” Tumlin said. “I think I made an owl once, but it didn’t turn out right. It looked like a ball with a head.” Tumlin’s mother disagreed with her daughter’s assessment. “I have it in my living room,” she said. “I think it’s fabulous. It’s on display there for everyone to see. I thought he was a snowman.” Even if there’s no true way to discern whether it’s an owl, penguin or open to interpretation, Tumlin noted she was a better artist for having attempted it. “It helps me figure out that I’m not the best at making animals, but it helped with shaping stuff and making sure there was even thickness. That helped me when it came to making bowls. Drawing is the best art form for me, and it’s hard for me to transfer that into something that’s three-dimensional.” Tumlin credited her art teacher Kelly Whittington for being a positive mentor and helping her build on her artistic prowess. “She’s taught me how to do stuff more realistically and actually make it look more accurate based on looking at a picture and doing it,” Tumlin said. “For

one of my homework assignments, I did a drawing of Jensen Ackles, a character from Supernatural. I drew it from a picture and it looked pretty accurate to the actual picture. I learned this from her during that assignment and a couple other projects where we had to draw it from looking at a picture and making it look as realistic as possible. She’s good for teaching skills and strategies. She’s awesome.” 20

Other influences in her art outside of her family include her taste in music, including some of her favorite musicians Muse and Ed Sheeran. “My portrait of birds and flowers was inspired by listening to the song “Resistance” by Muse,” Tumlin said. “It helps me block out all the distractions. The song makes me think of a sci-fi movie and when I first started that picture, I wanted things in it to look a

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

little less realistic. I wanted the roses to be brighter and I wanted the birds to look different from birds that I have seen before.” Even with a busy schedule, Tumlin finds time to help out her mother’s store by designing crosses and choosing scriptures for Christian-themed T-shirts. “I wanted to buy the scripture tees, you know, like the ones you see in different boutiques that are really cutesy,” her mother said. “With her being able to draw, I thought, ‘Hayden, why don’t you sit down, come up with your ideas and use your favorite scriptures?’ It just kind of happened that way. She drew them, and Teen Challenge prints them. I’m helping Teen Challenge and it’s getting her work out.” One of the first shirt designs Tumlin drew she said was inspired by her grandmother who had recently had an aneurysm. “I made this for her,” Tumlin said, holding up the t-shirt. “The scripture basically said to be strong and that God would be with her.” Tumlin hopes to apply the talents she’s been learning to her future career goals after high school. “For my career, I’m planning on being a graphic designer or a sound designer who will score music for movies,” she said. “I’ve not yet decided which one it’s going to be. Either way, I’ll get to have a creative career, and I’ll have time on the side to do whichever one I don’t choose as a career.” Mother Tumlin praised her daughter for her well-rounded approach to everything in her life. “She’s a very deep child — an old soul,” she said. “She’s very busy and very talented. She’s one cool kid.”

Half a green bell pepper, chopped

Two stalks celery, chopped

One medium onion, chopped

Two green bell peppers, chopped

A half pound sliced mushrooms

Two jalapeno peppers, chopped

One can sliced water chestnuts

Three cloves garlic, chopped

One package of the powdered chili seasoning of your choice-

Two four ounce cans chopped green chile peppers, drained

hot, mild or in-between

Two 12 ounce packages vegetarian burger crumbs

Two cans Rotel-your choice of mild, medium or hot

Three 28 ounce cans whole peeled tomatoes, crushed

One medium can crushed or diced tomatoes, if desired

One fourth cup chili powder

Two cans red kidney beans or other beans if you prefer

One tablespoon ground black pepper

Grated cheese of your choice for topping

One 15 ounce can kidney beans, drained

Sour cream for topping

One 15 ounce can garbanzo beans, drained

Fresh ground black pepper to taste

One 15 ounce can black beans

Salt to taste

One 15 ounce can whole kernel corn

McCormick’s California Style Garlic Powder, to taste

What you do: Brown turkey or beef in large skillet, drain and transfer to a large Dutch oven. Add beans, Rotel, tomatoes, veggies and seasonings and simmer for about 30 minutes or until flavors are well blended. Serve with grated cheese, sour cream, extra chopped onion and peppers and even sliced black olives for guests to personalize their servings as desired. *Serves four to six as appetites call for… They call this “The Best Vegetarian Chili in the World” for a reason…

What you do: Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion and season with bay leaves, cumin, oregano and salt. Cook and stir until onion is tender, then mix in the celery, green bell peppers, jalapenos, garlic and green chile peppers. When vegetables are heated through, mix in the burger crumbles. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer for five minutes. Mix tomatoes into the pot. Season chili with the chili powder and pepper. Stir in kidney beans, garbanzos and black beans. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes. Stir in the corn and continue cooking for five minutes until serving. A variety of toppings will add to your dish and guests can personalize their favorites.

he loves to draw and paint, he loves to work with wood and together they make unique lakeside decorations. “I grew up in the flower business,” said Karen Vardaman. “Pell City Flower & Gift Shop is the family business.” Karen worked at Pell City Flower & Gift Shop until she retired due to health reasons. “After about a year-and-a-half, I was 26

ready to start doing something again,” she said. “I love to color and paint and my husband, Mart, enjoys working with wood, so I started making things for our house.” Karen said her hobby quickly grew from there. “People would call saying they wanted something, and I’d draw it out and Mart would cut the wood,” she said. “Many people said they didn’t

have room between a storm door and their door for a wreath.” Karen and Mart turned their hobby into Studio V. Door—Personalized Gifts and Door Décor to fill that need. “These wooden decorations will fit between the two doors,” she said. “They are sealed with polyurethane so they

A House Becomes a Home Ponders put family home first in home renovations Story by EMILY ADAMS Photos by BOB CRISP

ver the past 14 years, Carl and Bonnie Swinford Ponder’s lakefront house has transformed from a place unique to the previous owner into a spacious, comfortable home unique to their expanding family. “Family is real important,” Bonnie said. “A lot of our friends are downsizing and moving into condos, and I just can’t imagine not having a place for all of us to get together at Christmas and Thanksgiving and all those special times.” The now 4,400 square foot home was built by a paraplegic 28

who tailored his roughly 2,000 square foot home to fit his specific needs, including handicap accessible rooms and a conveniently located pool for water therapy. “It fit him perfectly,” said Carl, who more commonly goes by Butch. “It’s just that we didn’t need some of the things that were very useful for him.” The original home consisted of four individual sections connected by either a long hallway or a breezeway with a pool at the center. Two oversize bedrooms accommodated a

wheelchair, as did the bathrooms, doorways and wide hallways. Later, and with a different owner, the Ponders became familiar with the house when they moved to a smaller home just up the street. Bonnie said they would visit with the former owners and “we just felt like this is where we needed to be. Some things just feel right, so when they called one day and said they’d decided to sell the house, Butch told them what we were thinking about paying, and they said, ‘Well, that’s what we were thinking about asking.” So, they shook hands, and we didn’t have a contract or anything. “We ran our house in the Daily Home and I think had 42 people to call, which tells you we weren’t asking enough,” she said. “The first people that came bought it.” Butch said it “was obviously the property and the location we wanted” when they made the purchase. The home’s

exterior was dated, and the interior was “very modern and contemporary, and that’s not my taste at all,” Bonnie said. Plus, with only two bedrooms, and two of their four sons still living at home at the time, they knew they had their work cut out for them for some major home improvements. “My wife is a very visionary person and was able to put together something that looked like what we wanted,” Butch said. “She’s the planner here.” Bonnie said they started renovations, which have continued sporadically over the years as different needs arose, with adding bedrooms and removing the dusty rose-colored carpet that was found throughout the house. “I could see we didn’t want a house that looked like this one did, and we needed more room,” she said. “I would just lay there at night thinking, ‘How can we fix this?’ We started little by little to get it the way we wanted, so we started with October 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

the bedrooms first, because we had to have that. Then we got rid of the pink carpet.” Both retired educators, the Ponders love for family is evident in their comfortably yet stylishly decorated home, now with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. Every space was designed with a family member or a specific use in mind. Over time, they added a second story with two bedrooms, a bathroom and storage space for their sons and grandchildren – by far their biggest construction project, Bonnie said. They also took closet space from the master suite and made a bedroom and bathroom for their three grandchildren – Edward, Drew and Ella – to stay when they visit, and they remodeled and expanded the kitchen and living room area. In addition, they closed in a hallway between two sections of the house and made a cheerful sunroom that

Mrs. Ponder took time to make sure her kitchen design was everything she wanted it to be.

Bonnie says has the prettiest lake view of any room in the house. Many other useful improvements were made as well, including built-in storage areas and book cases throughout. Starting at the front door, a foyer leads to a stairway or to the right, where there is a study and game room. The space was created for their “male-dominated household” and has built-in book cases, lush seating, a pool table in the center and an elevated TV so you can keep up with the latest ball game while playing a game of pool. A vaulted ceiling with pine beams gives a cabin-style feel to the room. Butch said he and Bonnie spend very little time in the area, but you can expect to find their sons and grandchildren there. Off the study is the bright and cheery sunroom, with light yellow walls and mostly white furniture. And Bonnie is right – the room boasts one of the best lakefront views of the house with its wall of long windows that let the lake sights and sunlight in. Next is the heart of the home in a spacious kitchen and adjoining open living room painted a deep hunter green. The space has the same vaulted pine ceilings as the study, which Bonnie said “really confined” their décor options, but adds a comfortable Southern charm that would otherwise be lost. The kitchen design was particularly important to the family, as they enjoy cooking together, Bonnie said. 32

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

“I looked through magazine after magazine, and I went to Southern Living ideal homes and every open house I could find to see how the kitchens were done, and I was real excited to have some more room,” she said. “The boys come home and they like to cook, so we all get in here.” An ash wood stained to look like pine was chosen for the cabinets and other woodwork to blend with the living room, and some special details were added – like arched openings, ample countertops and a table-height island with a sink. “We lowered the island table height, because I’m short, and it’s more comfortable to do my chopping and mixing, plus its perfect for the grandchildren, and they can get in here and all work together,” Bonnie said. “We made it so it could be easily taken out if someone bought the house later and is taller than I am.” In the living room, some windows were taken out to help with heating and cooling and an all-weather porch was added. Bonnie said the porch, with a TV, fireplace and screened windows is where she and Butch spend a lot of time. “This is our favorite part of the house,” she said. “We can sit out here in our rocking chairs and grow old and enjoy retirement, if we ever have the time. We’re busier now than before!”

The pool is lined with brick pavers and invites everyone in for a dip.

A hallway joining the living room and master suite is filled with storage areas and utility closets that nicely hide the pantry, mop sink and other necessary, but not-so-attractive items. They also included a large laundry and sewing room. The master suite continues the warm and comfortable feel of the home. It has tan walls with white wood paneling halfway up, as well as a cozy fireplace, office space and door leading to the pool just outside. The master bathroom has a built-in shower, jetted tub, and double vanities separated by more built-in storage. Part of the formerly oversized room was made into a room for their grandchildren to give them their own space to play as they grow. Outside the bedroom, and accessible from several rooms in the house, is the pool surrounded by a bricked patio. The area is the site of frequent church parties and other gatherings, where children especially love jumping off the diving board. “The pool is a bit unusual because it has very little shallow area with a 9-foot deep end,” Bonnie said. “That did present a problem for our grandchildren, but they learned to swim very quick.” Outside is a yard that would make any lake dweller green with envy. Though neighbors are all around, it maintains a certain privacy, partly thanks to an island that blocks their home from the main channel of Logan Martin. Bonnie’s gardening hobby means the grounds are supremely 34

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

maintained with colorful bursts of flowers. “This is nice because it’s our own little private pond right here,” Bonnie said. “The children can get in the row boat or paddle boat and go fishing, and they’re not bothered by a bunch of Jet Skis. But yet, we’re on the main channel too, and we can get right out with everybody else. To me, of all the things, that’s the nicest thing is having that small island as a buffer to make it our own private lake back here.” And with a boat launch, pier, covered boat house, pontoon boat, Jet Skis, paddle boats and more lakefront equipment, the Ponders have everything they need to enjoy the water. However, Bonnie said the absolute best part of lake life is “being able to share it with people who don’t live on the lake and want to enjoy all the lake activities,” and that includes their sons – Mark, Michael, Benji and Brad – and their own families that come from all over (Lincoln, New York, Mobile and Birmingham, respectively) to take pleasure in their parent’s beautiful home. “I want them to always have a room here,” Bonnie said. “I don’t want our children to ever think they don’t have a place to come.” With a house that is practically rebuilt and more projects on the horizon, the Ponders prove a home is always evolving. “There is always something else we want to do. An outdoor kitchen is my next project, but don’t tell Butch,” Bonnie said with a laugh.

will withstand weather and are easy to store.” Karen said many customers want their decoration on a stand to place in the cemetery. “I will put the person’s initials or names or whatever the customer wants to personalize the item,” she said. “I hope by personalizing these pieces that it will help reduce theft. I’ve had customers who left cemetery pieces out for several months that called to tell me the pieces look just like when they first placed them out.” Karen said she does a wide variety of pieces of all sizes. “Anything you can think of—we’ll give it a shot,” she said. “You can pick the colors or names to go on it.” “Everything is ready to go when you pick it up,” she said. “It is ready to hang or to place in the cemetery.” Karen said July was the one-year anniversary of her pursuit of this new hobby. “I do seasonal cutouts like snowmen and Christmas trees,” she said. “The pieces are sealed front and back, which is good for glass doors.” 38

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

Karen said she has a variety of ribbons and other decorations for the pieces—whatever is needed to make it perfect. Mart said each piece is a many-step process. “It takes about two hours to cut and sand a full sheet of plywood,” he said. Karen said next comes two coats of primer, two coats of base paint, the hand-picked design and then the piece is sealed and dried. “The finishing touches include drilling holes for hangers, bows, stands or whatever is needed,” she said. “It usually takes us about a week from start to finish.” Karen said the couple does all the hobby work at their home in Pell City. “You can pick it up here and we also have a pickup point at Pell City Flower & Gift Shop,” she said. “We also ship pieces upon request.” For more information call Karen Vardaman at 205-8126132.

What A House! Great cabin on the creek, what more you could want Story by BILL KIMBER Photos by BOB CRISP

I

f creek side living is your style, this cabin on Hatchett Creek in Coosa County could be just what you’re looking for. Area Real Estate in Sylacauga has a listing for this two-story, elevated cabin with a half-mile of creek frontage. Located on County Road 59 near Rockford, the house is about 20 miles from either Sylacauga or Alexander City, said Bill Pharr, owner-broker of Area Real Estate. The great room has tongue-and-groove ceilings, hardwood floors and a huge fireplace. It adjoins the kitchen with all built-in appliances. Two bedrooms are on that floor, the master suite is upstairs. On the ground level, beneath the main part of the house, there’s a laundry room and bathroom, along with a built-in smoker with gas fire starter.

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - October 2013

There’s a screened porch on back, and an open porch on front that overlooks the creek. The house comes with approximately 35 thickly wooded acres, and includes a detached shop building that houses a game room. “It’s a garage with roll-up doors for tractors and equipment, and behind that is a room that’s heated and cooled that’s great for a game room,” Pharr said. Originally listed at $349,000, the price has been reduced to $299,000. The house was built in 1988, and has approximately 1,700 square feet. It’s in the Coosa County school zone, and Alabama Power provides electricity. There’s a private well and septic tank, and a propane tank for gas. “It’s rustic living, but it’s just beautiful,” Pharr said. For more information, contact Pharr at 256-249-3727 or 256-872-6208 or by email at billpharr1@gmail.com.
