From the Editor...

R

eady or not, let’s take off on our September adventures! I know everyone’s ready for the number one Alabama past time-need I say what that might be? And with that comes a different focus for many of our lakeside activities, those being the great football gatherings by the water and elsewhere. But really…where does the time go! I’m still back in May in my mind… Anyway, with entertaining in mind and it still being “the grillin’ ” season and shrimp season, that’s what I chose to focus on for our food section. Everyone knows a good kabob recipe, but I played around with one and added a new take on mine I hope you’ll try. Putting a different variety-for me-of veggies with the shrimp worked very well, and adding the scallops was nice, too. The “side” of shrimp potato salad was a new one for me, but oh it’s good! Wish I’d added a little curry powder or ginger now that I think about it…The barbecued shrimp cocktail was new for me, too…it’s oh, so good! Really! And makes a nice presentation. So, let’s see…what else is in store this month? Kenny Farmer introduces you to former Birmingham Police Officer turned professional fisherman Chris Jackson, and he has lots of tips to share! Jackson took a chance and wound up being very successful in the fishing tournament world. Then, you’ll meet lakeside dwellers Steve and Lisa Young via our writer Emily Adams, who took a “home disaster” to new heights! They can teach us a thing or two about a major “redo,” and seemed to survive it quite well. I admire their talent and survival mode! So then, the paddler finds folks he knows out and about on the lake, it’s like he says, “You just never know who you’ll meet out there!” Always interesting. Chris Norwood introduces you to the new doughnut shop in Pell City, but…guess what? That’s not all they do! Then you’ll enjoy the lake family tradition of Harold and Pat Jones, longtime lake lovers who have passed on the tradition for three generations with writer Elsie Hodnett.

She, of course, said she had a great time meeting the Jones and experiencing their lake tales as I hope you do as well. Last, but not least, is the incredible artist Linda Bassett. You’ve met her before, but this so creative lady just keeps branching out with her talent into new things you just have to see! Known her for years, and I just keep loving her “stuff!” Visit the Artscapes Gallery in Pell City to see it, along with all the other incredible things the artists there do…where did all this talent come from! So finally, another “Thank you for your support and stories!” We couldn’t do it without our faithful folks and advertisers! And on the football note again…GO DAWGS! Sorry… can’t help being a “Jawja Peach!” But…I DO love my new “place!”

is love of the lake spans multiple generations—a love that connects the family together as they share the many things Logan Martin has to offer. “I really don’t know where I got my love for the water,” said Harold Jones, 76, who lives at Berkley Cove in Pell City with his wife, Pat. “When I was a kid, we used to go to the Warrior River to swim,” he said. “I just loved to go swimming. I probably swam in just about every public pool in Birmingham back in the late 1940s and early 1950s.” Jones bought his first boat, a ski boat, in 1962. “I purchased the wooded lot, where the house is now, in 1964 or 1965,” he said. “The first thing I built was a boathouse, even before the house. When the water had just backed up to create the lake, my friends and I would spend many a day working on skiing tricks. It was not a competition. It was

all for fun. We would come up with and work on a trick until we mastered it, then move on to the next trick.” Jones said they used a four-foot round circle plywood disc to perform tricks. “We put a lawn chair on the disc and we would stand up on the lawn chair while it was being pulled down the river,” he said. “It took many hours to master that trick.” Jones said his oldest boat is a Sunfish sailboat, which he purchased in Birmingham in 1967 or 1968. “Those sailboats were very popular in Panama City at that time,” he said. “There was a Shark and a Sailfish too. They all looked alike except for the insignia on the sail.” Jones said the Sunfish sailboat is a

sailing dinghy about 14 feet long that one or two people can sail in. “All the kids grew up playing in it— three daughters, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren,” he said. “We had a lot of fun. I’ve sailed in it when I had to lean way back and the sailboat was going sideways down the lake.” Jones said the girls would play in the sailboat and also ski. “Pat would pull them with the ski boat during the day,” he said. “I’d come home from work, still in my uniform, and take the kids out skiing for an hour or two until it got dark. I did the same thing for the grandkids.” The Sunfish sailboat is the oldest boat Jones owns. The current ski boat was purchased in 1985. The fishing

boat was his birthday gift in 1987 and the wave runner was purchased in 1991. As Jones taught the generations to swim, ski and sail, he made water safety a priority. “They don’t get in the water without a life jacket,” he said. “They may fuss about it but that’s the rule. Another rule is to always make sure you have gas before you leave.” Jones’ love of the water is shared with his grandson, 15-year-old BayLee Pollard. “This is where I learned to swim,”

Harold and BayLee have explored many miles along Logan Martin Lake.

BayLee said. “I was 3 or 4-years-old when I learned to kneeboard. On Easter when I was in kindergarten, I got training skis and the day I graduated kindergarten I learned to ski. I’ve been skiing ever since.” BayLee said he learned skiing tricks and created some of his own—just like his “Paw Paw.” Then, in 2010, 12-year-old BayLee asked Paw Paw to get out the sailboat. The sailboat had been in storage for about 10 years, hanging from the roof of the boathouse. “There was a hole in it from when one of the other boats floated up during one of the local flood times and put a hole in it,” BayLee said. “Paw Paw patched it up.” Paw Paw taught BayLee to sail that summer. The next year, BayLee learned more about sailing at camp. “I really enjoyed the sailboat until the fishing boat got fixed,” he said. “Paw Paw and I go fishing a lot together when I visit. The lake is not always windy enough for sailing, but when the wind is good we sail.” BayLee said his favorite thing is to go fishing with Paint & Body Shop • Audio • Tinting Truck & Car Accessories • Towing

his grandfather because he has so many stories about catching fish all night. “I envy him because I’ve never done that,” BayLee said. “I’ve always wanted to night fish.” Paw Paw said given time, he and BayLee will have a chance to go night fishing. “We’ve got to find where the big ones are first,” he said.

Such was the case with freshly made doughnuts, one of the very few food categories that was unavailable around the lake. 12

Art by the Water

An example of artist Linda Bassett’s hand built pottery.

It’s Still An Adventure for This Artist Linda Bassett keeps finding her way to new art forms Story by LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

Y

ou just never know what this artist is going to turn to next. Linda Bassett, well known for her painting and mixed media pieces, has become a creator in clay, and in all kinds of ways. The Artscape Gallery in Pell City is filled with her newest creations, from tiny creatures to large usable kitchen pieces. She makes dishes, bowls, vases, ceramic bell wind chimes, pendants, wall hangings and lots more. With her pottery, Bassett hand-builds clay pieces and decorates these with other hand-built flowers and figures. She combines both two dimensional (drawing and painting) and three dimensional skills in her work. 18

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2013

From the clay, Bassett fashions shapes and objects, and then adds flowers and figures to enhance the pieces. These may be painted decoration, pieces appliquéd on or a full 3-dimensional item added, such as a flower or a frog or a turtle perhaps. She uses an assortment of textures to give a greater tactile enjoyment to her pieces, and then uses a variety of underglazes and glazes to decorate and add more visual impact. “I likes to make pieces which are both beautiful and useful,” she tells. She also enjoys making some purely ornamental pieces which are often nature based and includes flowers, birds, even lizards.

Linda Bassett joined Artscape Gallery in Pell City in 2009. You will find her pieces there along with those of other artists.

She says she gets her inspiration from the world around her. “The flowers I enjoy, the scenes I see and the colors of the sea and sky,” she said. She believes that both function and appearance are important, so with every piece she is trying to create a work of art. Her pieces can take pride of being placed on a dresser for display, or they can be used to serve food. All of her serving pieces are food and oven safe. Bassett is a native of a rural area of New Zealand. She was an artistic child, but never got the opportunity to develop her talent. She learned many of the domestic skills of the era such as knitting, embroidery and cooking, and spent as much time as she could drawing. 20

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2013

After she was married and had a family, she had little time for even this. She started decorating cakes – for herself, family and friends – and this became her main artistic expression over the next year. This is when she started a career that would eventually take her family to Las Vegas. She started baking and decorating cakes. Her skills in this area increased dramatically, and she also started making lifelike sugar flowers. By the mid 1990s Basset had become one of the most well-known cake decorators in New Zealand. In 1999, a visit to the United States lead to a job offer at the Bellagio Resort and Hotel, and she and her husband, Tony, relocated to Las Vegas in June of that year.

Bassett also creates a wide variety of wearable art.

In 2001, Bassett got the opportunity to spend some time creating three dimensional paintings. Cakes were an important part of Bassett’s life but they are temporary, she said. “This was part of a search to find a more permanent medium,” she said. She completed two paintings late 2001, got interrupted by cakes, finished another painting in early 2003 and was interrupted by cakes yet again. She worked at Perfect Endings in Napa in 2004, and then joined the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas as their cake artist from early 2005. In 2006 Bassett was featured on SugarRush, and later took part in one of the Food Network Challenges. Her cake clientele includes names like Oprah Winfrey, Mel Gibson, Will Smith, Paris Hilton, Tony Curtis, Robert Goulet, Britney Spears, Gene Simmons, Stevie Wonder, Liz Taylor, the Revlon family and many others. Bassett finally committed herself totally to her art in early 2007 when she left the Wynn. Then, in 2009, it was time to move again. Bassett and her husband relocated to Pell City, and

buying a house gave her new tasks of creating a garden from nothing and bringing back a home from a rundown house filled her days. But her artistic desires were still incomplete. In 2009, Bassett became a member of the local Artscape Gallery and began her activities in art again. This eventually led to her taking some pottery making classes with Janice Entler (another gallery member). Her enjoyment of and ability with the clay quickly became obvious, and in late 2011, she purchased her own kiln. This new adventure into pottery allows her to use more

Bassett’s design inspirations are often found in nature.

Being a keen photographer, Bassett has created a great catalogue of ideas for her creations. Her love for rocks and flowers, combined with a real fascination with different textures, helps her create her art as she sees the world around her. Her pictures use a mix of marble, resin and acrylics with which she creates a three dimensional slice of the world which stimulates the viewers’ senses and as she hopes, they give a feeling of life and movement. She also has another side to her cache of artistic pursuits. Basset enjoys doing beautiful colored pencil drawings. These are wonderfully ornate and detailed and show an entirely different side of Bassett’s talent. In Jan 2013, Linda had double replacement knee surgery, which has slowed her up art work dramatically, she said. She usually attends a number of festivals in the greater Birmingham area, including those at Aldridge Gardens, Art in the Park in Jasper, Art on the Mountain at Mt. Ruffner and the Montevallo Arts Fest, but had to miss those this year because of the surgery. Recovery has progressed well, and she has started doing more pottery over the last month. She has been accepted this year into the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists September show in Nashville Sept 27, 28 and 29. This is the largest fair she has yet attended (there were 200 artists and 45,000 visitors for the event), and it’s 24

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2013

one of the more difficult events to be accepted to. She will be at the Moss Rock Festival in Hoover Nov. 2 and 3 and at the Anniston Museum Winter Weekend Nov. 8 and 9. She is also planning to participate in the Blue Light event in Leeds in December. Bassett’s artwork may be viewed on-line at www. sculptedpictures.com You can also find her at lindabassett. fineartamerica.com. Another site is sadabe.redbubble.com where she has included some t-shirt designs. And for further items, visit www.zazzle.com/sadabe. Here you will find shoes, caps and many other items either designed specifically or are based on Bassett’s artwork. Her pottery is not yet on line – you will need to visit the Artscape Gallery in Pell City to see it, or catch her at one of the shows.

You Just Never Know... Who you’ll find out on the water Story and photos by DAVID ATCHISON

I

could not believe my eyes when I looked along the bank of the river and spotted a long-time friend I hadn’t seen in a year, David Haynes. David was one of the many mentors I would meet throughout my career in the newspaper business. He was the first person to teach me how to take professional newspaper photographs. David is an excellent award winning photographer and writer. “David Haynes,” I said loudly, as I paddled up to him.

26

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2013

“I know your face,” he said. “Who are you?” I took my helmet off and he immediately called out my name. I saw David along the banks of the Locust Fork River, as another friend, Rundell Curtis, and I were tackling some whitewater that day. I didn’t realize until later that David took a picture of us as we paddled past the old covered bridge, Swann Bridge, toward him. He didn’t realize he was taking a picture of an old friend either, which is kind

of funny. I’m always saying, “You never know who you are going to see or meet on the river.” Rundell and I talked to David for a while. The last time I saw David, we paddled together down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. David was on his way to completing the entire 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trial journey. David, who is also an author, wrote about the canoe trip he made with his two Golden Retrievers in a wooden canoe. He paddled all the way down to Fort Morgan. He started his journey in Georgia. “You’re in my book,” he said. I think a picture I took of him and his dogs as he paddled near the Riverside Town Bridge is going to be on the cover of his new book. David said his book, “Paddling Alabama, from the Mountains to the Sea,” should hit the bookshelves soon. David is also a former Daily Home reporter. Anyway, later on that night, David posted the picture he snapped of Rundell and me on Facebook. It was beautiful. It looked more like a canvas painting than a photograph.

One of the many decorative landscapes you can find along the lake.

I remarked on the effect and asked him about it. It was a DHR mode (high-dynamic-range imaging) that was built into the camera, he said. The camera he uses is a Pentax Optio WG-2 with GPS, and it just so happens I have one too, but mine doesn’t have the GPS. DHR captures a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of a photograph and the results can sometimes be stellar. All the time I’ve had this camera, I never knew you could turn your pictures from a flat looking photograph to a contrasted, bright colored photograph that looks very much like a canvas painting. I just had to try it out, and as you can see from my photos this month, I did. People with Photoshop can basically get the same DHR effect, but I thought it was neat that a camera could do the same thing. I guess I am still learning from my old mentor. I would imagine many of today’s digital cameras have this mode built in, you just have to know it is there. I didn’t. With just a flick of the button, you can really make your photos snap, and look really different, changing an ordinary picture into an extraordinary photograph. Not everyone likes the effect, but most people I’ve shown

the photographs to are amazed at the way they looked. I like the scenic shots better, but my wife Laura, the co-editor of this magazine, enjoys the people shots, so I think it’s just a mater of taste. One special note, at least with my camera, if you convert it to the DHR mode, you can’t change the photograph back to the way it looked originally. But, to me if you are looking to make your photos a little more artsy, the DHR mode could be what you are looking for. So when I paddled away from the shore on my latest adventure, my plan was to see what kind of pictures I could capture using the DHR mode. I shot more of a variety of photographs so I could see what the DHR mode could do. Melvin “Mel” Osinga was kind enough to let me start my trip at his lake home. I met Melvin on my last trip. He is really a great guy. I had to be at work that afternoon, so I couldn’t visit long with Mel. I promised him I will visit with him more next time. I hadn’t paddled far before I met Lloyd Story and his wife, Dr. Linda Story of Helena. Linda just got her doctorate degree in marriage and family therapy from Southern Christian College. “This is our first time up here this year,” Lloyd said. The Rev. Jacky Connell and his wife, Denise, of Pell City, do a little fishing on a pretty day.

Lloyd was trying to catch some crappie, while Linda was just enjoying the ride. “We just came down here for the day,” she said. We talked for a few minutes, then the sky opened up and rain started pouring from the sky. It was a typical summer shower. No lightning, though. It poured down rain in one small spot along the river. Lloyd only had to start his boat and move just a little bit up river to get out of the rain. I didn’t have a motor attached to my kayak. I looked out 400 yards away, and it was all clear. The rain didn’t last for long and actually, it cooled me off. I started my paddle trip in a large slough next to Treasure Island and worked my way to the main channel. I managed to get a nice picture of an egret perched in a tree, probably looking for a meal. Residents along the lake really personalize their lawns next to the water. People set up hammocks, chairs and benches, all kinds of things. Other residents have fire pits, and other specialized items to make their lake home different. At one residence, owners filled an old wheelbarrow with colorful flowers. I thought that was neat. Not far from that residence, I heard a hawk and spotted the big bird on the ground. Usually I see these birds perched on trees. He must have found some brunch. I paddled down to the main river channel, which had bigger swells from passing boats speeding by. I eventually 30

reached another slough before reaching Rabbit Branch. I paddled to the end of that slough, and figured I needed to head back to where I had started. That’s when I ran into someone who is well-known in the Pell City community, Brother Jacky Connell. I sort of snuck up on Rev. Connell and his wife of 39 years, Denise. They were both fishing. I also found that Rev. Connell has a good sense of humor. “It’s a shame you have to work out here,” Rev. Connell said. “You have a pretty good office out here.” Rev. Connell has been the pastor for Eden Westside Baptist Church for 26 years, which to me is amazing. “It’s been a blessing,” Rev. Connell said about his long tenure at Eden Westside Baptist Church. Of course, he invited me and my wife to his church. “There are some good people there,” he said. “We just need about two more people.” Rev. Connell and his wife reside on a farm. They have three horses. That was a neat coincidence, because my wife, Laura, is an accomplished rider, well in her younger days, and still has a 31-year-old horse, Frenchy. “We just came out here to fish,” Rev. Connell said. “We don’t get to come out here very often.” I said my good-byes to the couple and headed back to shore, finishing another trip on Logan Martin Lake with a bunch of good, different photographs. I can’t wait for my next adventure, but until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Lakeside Living in Style

To the Studs and Back Again The Youngs’ reconstructed lake home is better than ever Story by EMILY ADAMS Photos by BOB CRISP

I

n 2006, Steve and Lisa Young bought the newly built five bedroom, three bathroom home of their dreams on Logan Martin Lake. They, along with their three children - Jordan, now 22; Devin, 21; and Brady, 16 – quickly fell in love with the fun and relaxing lake lifestyle, making weekend visits as often as possible. But over time, they began to notice an odor when they would arrive for the weekend, and also experienced frequent problems with the A/C unit. Both issues they assumed were caused by the house being closed up during the week. 32

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2013

It wasn’t until 2011 that the family heard two dreaded words that would explain their various problems and lead to an overhaul of the entire house: Chinese drywall. “We had it 100 percent, and we were part of a $900 million lawsuit,” Steve said. “What we’ve been through, we really hope nobody else has to go through.” The defective drywall manufactured in China was imported to the United States starting in 2001 and became widely used in the South after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Steve said. Chinese drywall was found to emit carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide and hydrogen sulfide. The emissions

have a rotten egg odor and cause copper to turn black and powdery. They also affect wiring, air conditioner coils and silver jewelry. Homeowners have reported a variety of respiratory symptoms resulting from exposure to the gases; however, Steve said their family never experienced that. “We didn’t notice the odor because we’re only here on the weekends, and we just thought it was the stale smell from having the house closed up,” he said. “We left doors and windows open and never noticed it.” After joining a class-action lawsuit against Knauf, one of the major suppliers of the faulty drywall, the Youngs were offered three options as a resolution. They could use a court-appointed contractor to make home repairs, hire their own contractor at the court-appointed contractor’s estimate, or receive a cash settlement. They chose to hire their own contractor, Jeff Brown of Cross Creek Contracting, who began the huge undertaking in February of 2012 and finished just 90 days later. “We are very happy with the way it was handled,” Steve said. “Jeff did a good job of getting it back together quickly,

and he made the whole process easy for us. Everything turned out great.” To repair the walls and related problems, the house was taken down to the studs through and through, even in the adjoining garage. “They took the wiring out and had to come inspect it to prove everything was clear,” Steve said. “When you see the pictures, it’s kind of amazing, because you could stand in the living room and see all the way to the other side of the house. I mean, it was just studs.” The Youngs seized the opportunity to make some other improvements to their 3,500 square-foot, two-story home as well. They had all the carpet replaced with tile or hardwood flooring, updated the kitchen appliances, built a fullyfunctional bar in the downstairs game room and installed a state-of-the-art in-home stereo, thermostat and security system that can all be controlled from any location with an iPhone or computer. “The house has come back 10 times better than it was,” September 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

33

The Young family from left includes Devin, Brody, Lisa, Steve and Jordan.

Steve said. “We’re a lot happier with how modern everything is. The way we look at it is that now we have basically a new house. We moved into a new house when we moved back in, because everything from the paint to the electrical is brand new.” And the results of the overhaul are impressive. Everything about the classic yet comfortable home is perfect for entertaining, from the wraparound porch to the open living room and kitchen layout to the projector on the downstairs patio (used to watch football games in the fall, of course). The home’s main floor opens to a kitchen with whitewashed cabinets, stainless steel appliances and a glass-top dining table. Connected is the living room, which has a newly installed flat screen TV mounted above the fireplace and a sectional couch ideal for seating a crowd of friends. The space has vaulted ceilings complete with a skylight, and just off of the living room are two spacious bedrooms with a bathroom in between. Stairs lead to a loft above the kitchen with an open office that Steve and Lisa, who both work for Landstar Transportation, use for work when necessary. Next to the office is the master suite. An intricately 34

carved four-poster bed is used in the bedroom, along with the coordinating furniture and a wall-mounted TV that allows them to see live feeds from security cameras in and around their home. “Our friends come over and say, ‘You’ve got cameras filming us?’” Steve said. “We say, ‘Only when you’re on the tables dancing!’” In the master bathroom are double vanities, a bathtub and a walk-in stone shower that replaced a plastic shower insert during the remodel. The lower level of the house has become a favorite space since the recent improvements were made. A pool table is in the center, with the bar to the side. Two more bedrooms and a bathroom finish the area. “When our friends would all gather here, we used to be upstairs, because we didn’t have water and ice and everything,” Steve said. “Now we gather down here, because it’s got the stereo, the ice and the drinks, and we can come in wet and it’s no big deal.” Chinese paper lanterns that hang above the pool table are a reminder of the family’s drywall experience. To commemorate the incident, the Youngs held a Chinese New Year party on Memorial Day weekend, including

fortune cookies, sushi and Chinese decorations. “We called it a Chinese New Year since it was the Chinese drywall and then a new house,” Steve said. “We kind of made fun of the situation, and we’ve had a lot of fun with it. What else can you do?” Outside the game room is a concrete patio with an abundance of seating and an outdoor fireplace that was donated by Earthcore/Isokern. The dock down below is used to load their Malibu Wakesetter, two JetSkis or the pontoon boat – all used frequently in the summer months. “We really enjoy the lower end of the lake and have made a lot of friends down here,” Steve said. “The neighbors are great. We’ve got lots of friends on the lake, and we’re definitely water people. The kids enjoy wakeboarding, and we really enjoy just hanging out, tying up with other boats.” The couple says they are extremely satisfied with their decision to purchase the lakefront home seven years ago, despite the hidden issues that came with it. Lisa said the lake is always a welcome 36

respite from their often demanding careers and has allowed them to meet many great friends. “Our jobs are really stressful, so you have to have that down time and the lake gives you tranquility and peace to regroup,” she said. “It’s like a mini-vacation here,” Steve added. “The people we hang out with are the best part about it. We don’t have schedules. We leave our watches behind, we call it ‘lake time.’”

“And it’s great for family time, too,” Lisa said. Steve and Lisa hope to move to the lake permanently one day. Though they don’t exactly know when that will happen, they plan to enjoy their new and improved home as often as possible in the meantime. “We have intentions of moving here full-time, but we’re slowly doing everything,” Steve said. “We are very happy with the way the house turned out, and I can say we are that much more eager to be here now.”

ot many folks I run into don’t have a bit of a taste for those good things we favor from the Gulf, and this time, it’s all shrimp-and a few other things Gulf-for our Lakeside food adventure this month. I started thinking about a great “shrimp fest,” and wanted to combine that with a little grilling, I think most southerners I know all love outdoor cooking and some of us even like to brag about our prowess! When people clean their plates, you know you’ve “done good!” So I took the liberty of inventing a little recipe of my own, a variation on a kabob I thought would be interesting (and oh yes, it was!), discovered a shrimp appetizer you

can adapt to your own preference of serving, along with a shrimp “side” that might add a new twist to your shrimping. All that said, these recipes may help out with those last end of summer gatherings outdoors, but they should be pretty handy inside as well. My “This and That Kabobs” What you need: One pound extra large shrimp One bunch fresh asparagus About two cups-the larger the better-sliced mushrooms About two dozen grape tomatoes A quarter pound of sea scallops or bay scallops-your choice, if you don’t already know, the sea scallops are larger 40

About 12 pearl onions-fresh is better than the jar McCormick’s California Style Garlic Powder (yes, there’s a huge difference!) Worcestershire sauce Two sticks of margarine (if you sauté any of the ingredients or if you marinate them-your choice…I think it’s easier to assemble the kabobs and marinate them in the marinade in plastic bags for good flavor) Cracked black pepper Optional: Two bags of minute brown rice-and really, you might want to use a box of wild rice or white-your call. Fresh lemon juice-one lemon will work.

What you do: OK, let’s go the easy route and make the marinade, put

the kabobs together, then grill or broil. Marinade: Mix Two cups Worcestershire, about a teaspoon of the garlic powder, some cracked black pepper to taste and set aside. Wash and break asparagus into tips, set aside. Do the same with the mushrooms. Take your skewers (this makes four) and assemble alternating pieces of shrimp, scallops, onions, asparagus and tomato alternating them for color and appearance. Place them into gallon sized freezer bags with the marinade and put in the refrigerator for at least an hour. When ready to cook, remove from bags and place on grill or under broiler, basting them with melted margarine and squeezing lemon juice on them as they cook. Adding leftover marinade as they cook helps keep them from getting too dry, too. Whether you grill or broil, they should be done in about 20 minutes. You can tell when the shrimp turn a nice pink and the veggies are crispy tender. I served mine on a huge platter, rice underneath, kabobs on top, and let everyone serve themselves. But, you can also plate them individually. Serve with lemon wedges and pots of melted butter or margarine for dipping. Side note: Even though it is another starch, wouldn’t grilled corn on the cob go great with this! Or sliced grilled (buttered and seasoned) eggplant, or maybe a spicy Caesar salad…I’ll stop now! Barbecued Shrimp Appetizer What you need: One fourth cup butter or margarine One half cup Italian salad dressing, use your own favorite Two tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Two tablespoons of your favorite barbecue sauce One tablespoon lemon pepper Two bay leaves-this is really crucial and I used four-not sorry! Two lemons, sliced One large onion, sliced…need I suggest Vidalia? Four cloves garlic, pressed-if you’re pressed for time, a few shakes of the McCormick’s California Style powder is almost as good Three pounds medium size fresh shrimp-but it’s OK to use frozen thawed if you need to-just remember they’re already cooked

What you do: Melt butter in a roasting pan or small Dutch oven. Add salad dressing and remaining ingredients and stir to coat the shrimp. Pour into glass baking dish and bake at 400 for 20 minutes or until shrimp (if uncooked and fresh) turn pink and stir to coat occasionally. Remove bay leaves and serve. Note: I chose to serve these in individual cocktail glasses, but they can also be put out “en masse” in chafing dishes for people to serve themselves for large groups. This recipe 44

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - September 2013

should provide about 10 appetizer servings. Garnish with fresh lemon slices and fresh rosemary-it’s pretty and good, too! Shrimp and Potato Salad Side What you need: Two medium potatoes, unpeeled Six cups water Two pounds medium sized fresh shrimp One half cup finely chopped green onions Four stalks celery, finely chopped Four large hard boiled eggs One half cup mayonnaise Two tablespoons prepared mustard One fourth teaspoon salt One half tablespoon pepper One half teaspoon hot sauce Lettuce leaves

What you do: Cube potatoes, place in a sauce pan and add enough water to cover, bring to a boil over medium high heat. Cook six to seven minutes or until tender. Drain, place in a large bowl to cool. Bring six cups of water to a boil in a saucepan, add shrimp, and cook three to eight minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Drain shrimp, and rinse with cold water. Peel shrimp and devein if necessary, you can use thawed frozen shrimp instead, and add shrimp, green onions and celery to the drained potatoes. Chop egg whites and add to shrimp mixture. Mash egg yolks, and stir in mayonnaise and mustard. Add mayonnaise, salt, pepper and hot sauce to shrimp mixture, tossing gently to coat. Cover and chill. Serve on lettuce leaves. You can add fresh fruit and or tomato wedges. Serves six to eight.

I served the kabobs over a bed of brown rice.

(Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) weekend tour, as well as giving tours of Logan Martin and several other lakes. “My family told me, ‘Well you will only find out one way, just do it and give it a shot’,” said Jackson. “I quit

the next week, took my retirement and started fishing full time.” Jackson said that he gave himself one year to either succeed or fail. He began fishing in local tournaments, and later moved up to the B.A.S.S. weekend series. After that, he was given the opportunity to move up in the BASS series, to B.A.S.S. He says he called his dad to tell him he was ready to give up his dream of fishing professionally. His father responded by telling him to “do what was in his gut and have fun.” Jackson rebounded on the second day of the tournament, moving from 114th place to 12th. This qualified him for B.A.S.S.’s National Championship event, as well as a chance to make

After speaking, Jackson was surprised to see people seeking his autograph. He said that it was humbling to think that anyone would want him to sign their hat or shirt. watching me – both of them had tears in his eyes.” Jackson said he walked over to ask them what was wrong. His parents, Stan and Carol Jackson, told him that nothing was wrong, they were just proud of what he had accomplished and how well he was handling his new career. “There is nothing more important to me than knowing I made my parents proud,” he said. Life as a pro Jackson says life as a professional angler and tour guide is much harder than people would think. He says many hours go into preparing for his guide trips – from researching the lake to getting tackle ready. And then there is the driving. Jackson said he left a tournament in Parris, Tenn. late one Saturday night, drove all night Saturday and most of the day Sunday to be at his next event at Lake Champlain in Plattsburg, NY. He says his job can be, at times, very stressful. He says people have to remember that he is targeting an animal that is “not predictable.” When preparing for a guided tour of the Coosa River chain of lakes, Jackson says he watches weather forecasts, studies patterns that might change due to weather and rigs up all his bait. He also cleans his boat and makes sure there are plenty of drinks and snacks for those accompanying

him. “I try to make sure clients have a great time, but the most important thing is they learn new things from how to pattern fish or adjust, knots that I’ve found to be best, how to pick the right tackle for the conditions and learn new tactics so they can use those things to become better anglers.” He said many fish are caught, “more times than not,” on his guided tours, but the most important thing to him is that the person taking the tour has learned how to fish. Advice for Logan Martin Lake Jackson says one of the biggest misconceptions about Logan Martin Lake is that “if the current isn’t running, the fish aren’t biting.” He says, while it is harder to get the fish to bite, “you can still catch them if you know where to move and adjust your style of fishing. “Also, people think that fish go deep and disappear in the really hot and really cold months of the year,” he said. “They don’t at all. You can catch fish in less than six feet of water year ‘round on this lake – and they are the easiest ones to catch.” Jackson says the fall is a great time to catch fish on Logan Martin – not only greater numbers of fish, but bigger fish, as well. “Spotted Bass tend to be moving into the creeks and

fishing may be that day. He says artists like AC/DC can pump him up for events, keeping his pace fast when using fast bait such as crankbaits, but he will slow the music down a little bit if he’s fishing with tackle like jigs or soft plastics. “I listen to a ton of artists,” he said. “On the water, it’s mostly bands like Nickleback, Three Doors Down and Motley Crue.” Contact Chris Jackson by visiting www.chrisjackson fishing.com or search Facebook for “Chris Jackson Fishing.”

Rockin’ and Reelin’ Jackson also likes to rock out to some of his favorite music while on the lake. He says the music he chooses “sets the tone” for his experience on a given day, and also distracts him from thinking about how good or bad the

main lake pockets to feed on shad so anglers need to hit the mouths of the creeks and channels and work them with swimbaits, like the Lake Fork Live Magic Shad and Crankbaits,” he said. “ As the sun gets up good, target long gravel points and docks that have lots of shade and brush on them with small jig heads and worms like the Davis Shaky Worm, Robo worms and Jackall Flick Shake. Stick to basic colors like green pumpkin and watermelon for the best results.” For Largemouth Bass, Jackson says anglers should target shoreline grass on the upriver section (above the I-20 bridge) of the lake. He says morning fishermen should cast swimjigs and topwater baits. “Once the sun gets above the trees, start flipping jigs and craw-type baits in the grass near deep water,” he said. “Also you can catch great fish on jigs and C-Rigs near creek channels with the Lake Fork Topdog Lizard and Ring Fry in green pumpkin and watermelon. It also never hurts to dip the tail of any of the soft plastics in chartreuse dye like JJ’s Magic.”

T

hink everything you could ever wish for in a lake home and here it is. The address is 47 Malibu Lane in Talladega County, and it can be all yours. Complete with four bedrooms, two and a half baths, two fireplaces and close to an acre lot, this stacked stone and siding home is truly a dream home. Located in Talladega County, it is in the Lincoln School District and was built in 1994. It is not in a conventional subdivision, but on its own and includes a wonderful pier for enjoying sunrises and sunsets and a sunroom as well. And another great thing is the convenience of the master bedroom suite on the main level with its own double sided gas log fireplace that also graces the family room. The master bath has a full linen closet and jetted tub. There’s a formal dining room for special occasions along with an “eat in kitchen” with all the very best of appliances. There is a second bedroom on the main floor, perfect

for company or young children, and upstairs, another four bedrooms with all the space anyone could need. There’s also a finished “bonus room” upstairs for creating that home theatre or playroom, depending upon your needs. And guess what else! There’s covered storage for all those “lake needs,” be it outdoor furniture, patio umbrellas or water toys. The air conditioning and heat is a heat pump and there are new porcelain tiles in the kitchen, added in 2011. There are new countertops in the kitchen, too, and a brand new built in microwave and dishwasher along with all the other appliances you could need. The kitchen also includes an ample pantry space. And to make it even easier to maintain the property, there’s an irrigation system pumped directly from the lake itself. The house includes ceiling fans. The home includes a walk in attic space. There is a one year home warranty for the house. September 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

Lakeside Agent Spotlight

She Loves Helping ‘First Timers” Theresa Harris wants to put the keys in your hand Theresa Harris

M

eet real estate agent Theresa Harris. She’s a retired 28-year federal employee who just loves working with “first time buyers.” “There’s nothing quite like handing them those keys for their first home,” she says. “That gleam in their eye when I do that and all the paperwork is done. There’s nothing like it.” Harris said she totally enjoys helping new buyers along. “I want to help educate them and stress that they do not need to go out and buy anything until after they close on the house,” she said. “I have just seen too many hearts broken because they went ahead and bought new furniture or something when they thought they had to have it right before closing.” It’s good advice, she maintains, to wait until all the papers are signed, sealed and delivered. “This is a scary and invasive time for them,” she said. “I think that just knowing that someone cares and that they really do have someone in their corner helps the whole process makes it all a little less scary for them. I care about that and I also try to reassure them that working very closely with their mortgage person is good. It just takes about 30 to 45 days and yes, it will be over soon.” Harris also likes to remind the nervous first timers that it will be over with soon and they can laugh about it later with their friends who might be “newbies, too.” Harris is a Leeds native and planned to become a nurse. Then, she went to work for the U.S. Social Security

By LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Administration and stayed there for more than 30 years. “I never dreamed I would do that,” she said. So after retiring, Harris didn’t really feel like “staying at home,” she wanted to do something else that would help people. “Real estate just came my way,” she said. She is an advocate of getting “pre-approved” for a home loan so buyers are educated about their budget before they start shopping. “There is no need in looking at homes that you really can’t afford,” she said. “That is only discouraging and causes unnecessary stress. Also, when you have this financial information, you can act faster on buying.” Harris also has good advice on determining a selling price for sellers. “You will need to do a comparable analysis report,” she advises. “This report shows the sellers information about what has sold in their area. Appraisers have to show what price similar homes have sold for in a particular area. So, sometimes, even when the seller’s home may be worth more than the nicest and biggest house in their neighborhood, it will only sell for what the market value shows it will sell for. But the market is finally getting a little better for sellers now with increased home sales this year.” Contact Theresa Harris with Remax Home Properties at 205-283-3576. They are specialists in the Logan Martin Lake home area with offices in Lincoln and Birmingham among other locations. September 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes
