who we are My name is Sara McNally. My husband Brad and I founded Constellation & Co. (and our marriage) in 2009 with a gocco printing kit and a table-top Kelsey press in a spare bedroom. We rented our first studio space and bought our Chandler & Price platen press in 2011. We’ve been putting one foot in front of the other ever since.
our studio Every day I walk into the studio, flip the light switch, tie my apron, and get to work. The studio is a special space—it is the fruition of a lot of dreams and hopes and hard work. It’s a place that feels like home. It’s a place infused with heritage. Our building is rich with history—it’s ornate and strong, built in the wave of new construction after the 1889 Seattle fire. I love the exposed brick, the aged wood floors, and the huge window with the natural light it lets in. But what I love most are the possibilities that this place holds. This is where I do what I love—and every day here is a blessing. We take this blessing seriously. Our work is truly a manifestation of our philosophy: to use ink and paper to connect people.
old school We bring old school to another level. This is Gutenberg. This is the eighteenth century. This is corsets and petticoats and embroidery. Our equipment is time-tested and well-worn, but we have restored everything with love—from rust and grime back to pristine printing condition. All of our presses are foot or hand powered and completely hand fed. Each sheet of paper goes through the press one at a time, and once through for each color printed. Same goes for type setting and image making. We use traditional wood and lead type and carefully hand set one letter at a time. Many of our pieces feature one of my hand-carved wood engravings. To say this is a labor of love is an understatement— but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s all about relationships. A card is sweet in its sentiment and simplicity. It’s a gift, and giving is good—good for relationship. Good for the giver and for the receiver. Giving is essential to life, not for its extravagance, but for showing our

behind the scenes The wonderful Dorothy Huynh was our photographer for this catalog, and we couldn’t have had more fun. We were super-fortunate to have Dorothy as one of our interns at the studio, and after a few months of working with her, we knew she would be the perfect person to shoot the catalog. We love her work. Her rich and heartfelt visual style was exactly what we wanted. It was so much fun to visit our friends across the city, shooting in their homes (and on their docks), and hanging out. Our work is so much about life here in Seattle that we wanted to include as much of the city as possible in our catalog. And not just the landmarks— the places where life really happens. The beautiful, personal places where people are home and relationships are built. So sit back, sip something “craft,” and enjoy a tour of the places we love in Seattle. We cherished these moments as they were happening, and we hope that our love for the city and its people comes through on every page.

our life in seattle This city is home to me in a way I couldn’t have predicted. Five years later, I’m still homesick when we leave and giddy when we return home. There’s nowhere in the world like Seattle. Brad and I visited Seattle with some comrades from college for the first time as “just friends” during our junior year. It was January, so naturally it was cold and rainy. And to us…it was perfect. We’re both from smallish suburban hometowns, and this was our first trip to a “big city” without our families. We were mystified at every turn by the sights, the shops, the people, the architecture, and the design sense of this city. Shortly after that trip we started dating, and neither of us stopped feeling a little homesick for Seattle until we returned. Our next trip to Seattle during our senior year included dinner at Sky City (the restaurant on top of the Space Needle) and Brad on one knee. As the restaurant slowly spun and we watched the city go by, he told me that this was our city and he wanted to spend his life here, with me. Naturally, we loaded up the car with essentials (clothes, snacks, and our first tabletop printing press) and hit the road for Seattle just weeks after graduation. This city is home to me in a way I couldn’t have predicted. Five years later, I’m still homesick when we leave and giddy when we return home. There’s nowhere in the world like Seattle. It fits us like a glove. This is where we’ve planted our feet, started our careers, grown our business, and made lifelong friends. This is where we’ll raise our kids. This is where we’ll grow old. This city—water and mountains, gold rush and mid-century modern, large yet small—it’s home.

jenny & mike’s lakeside place I’ll never forget the night Jenny sat down next to me, introduced herself, and said, “I want to be your intern.” I love her candidness—she knows what she wants and asks for it in such a winning manner that you can’t help but say yes. I went on to design the invitations for her wedding to Mike, and they were the perfect clients—encouraging, excited, and eager to try out my ideas. I knew that we just had to be friends! Jenny is an incredibly talented photographer and was an amazing intern. Camera always in hand, she snapped fabulous photos of our studio and processes and was an awesome sounding board for all my crazy ideas. She has been an absolute joy and encouragement since the day I met her. When I had the idea to do photo shoots throughout the city, I thought of Mike and Jenny right away. They live a badass Northwest life. They ride motorcycles, go camping, shoot photos in gorgeous locations, and live in a nautical lakeside apartment that is so them. The evening we spent capturing these photos and sipping whiskey on the dock will not soon be forgotten.

treehouse point There’s something so enchanting about treehouses. They harken to childhood and that remarkable ability we had to escape to somewhere more magical. They’re the perfect place to dream, plan, and connect with the people we love. Isn’t that what we love about stationery, too? Treehouse Point is located in a forest beside the picturesque Raging River in Issaquah, Washington. It’s a rustic bed and breakfast, featuring six custom, hand-built treehouses! It’s the perfect place to turn off technology, escape everyday stress, and enjoy the Pacific Northwest. Brad and I spent the night there to celebrate finishing this collaboration. It was simply amazing. Treehouse, hot tea, relaxation? Yes. Treehouse craftsman, Pete Nelson, and his wife, Judy, share a vision of connecting people through personal encounters with trees and nature. The Nelson family owns and operates Treehouse Point, as well as Nelson Treehouse and Supply, where they offer consulting, design, and building of custom treehouses. Their Animal Planet TV show, Treehouse Masters, is in its second season. They’re busy folks! This series of gifts features each of Treehouse Point’s six gorgeous treehouses. Each card and book is the perfect way to escape for a moment into a treehouse state of mind. It’s been a joy to collaborate with the Nelsons and Treehouse Point. our you & me series You are patient with me, encourage me, amaze me, mean the world to me, complete me, always impress me, take care of me, surprise me, are home to me, and I adore you. I designed the first (and very limited) edition of “You & Me” for a local art show with a love letters theme soon after Brad and I got married. During the design process, I tried for days to think of the right words to say. It was quite a challenge. How does one put into words the kind of love that I’ve found with my Brad? That long-awaited, unexpected, best friend-become-spouse, always and forever love? After lots of failed flowery attempts, lots of silly, ridiculous tries at cleverness...this simple list is what I came up with. And five years later, those words are even more tried and true than they were then. Today, I’m humbled and happy to share that in these last few years, thousands of people have used my words to share love with their someone. This is the epitome of success for me—that my heartfelt words have been shared and cherished, used to bring people closer together. I started this company and continue to work hard to grow it because I believe in the power of the written and printed word in people’s lives. jon & paige’s ballard house Our friends Jon and Paige are the coolest. They came to Seattle via Phoenix, and we met them soon after they relocated to the Pacific Northwest. Jon happens to be a rock star designer with a large Twitter following, and Brad was one of his faithful followers. Knowing Jon and Paige were new to Seattle, Brad invited them to dinner at our house. They agreed and thus began a lovely friendship. The world really is small sometimes. Not long after our first dinner, Jon went from friend to co-worker when he hired Brad to work with him at a local start-up design firm. The two of them are a lot alike: quiet, careful with words, and nerdy to the core. Paige and I bonded over our many eccentricities, like our appreciation for old men & old things, and our love for telling long, drawn out stories about mundane events. One night while out for dinner, I told Jon about my desire to get a tattoo. I’d thought about it for years, but always hesitated to make an appointment. “Let’s go right now,” he said. I said, “yes!” So with the moral support of Brad, Jon, and Paige, I went for it—and I’m so glad I did. I suppose you could say those two made their mark! We loved spending time at their beautifully curated house (once featured on Design Sponge!) with Sam and Molly their sweet, cuddly, and large dogs. They’ve since moved away from Seattle, and we miss them terribly!

love is eternal In the fall of 1852, Abraham Lincoln gave his new bride, Mary, a wedding ring inscribed with the words, “A.L. to Mary, Nov. 4, 1842. Love is Eternal.” This is a wood engraving inspired by Lincoln’s promise to his wife. She stood by him through a war, the death of a child, and even his assassination. Their marriage teaches us an important thing: our circumstances don’t define us - our relationships do.

wood engraving Wood engraving is a printmaking technique in which an image is carved into an end grain block of wood with sharp metal tools. The image is inked and printed using pressure, much like the letterpress printing process. Dating back to the 15th century, wood engraving is the perfect historic complement to wood and lead type. For my birthday one year, Brad gave me unlimited wood engraving lessons. My teacher, Carl Montford, is absolutely a master of his craft, and I am honored to call him mentor and friend. He was the “matchmaker” who brought us together with the seller of our first press, and he even helped us move the press into our studio, which was not an easy task! Carl is an absolute treasure to the Seattle letterpress community. But more that that, he’s like family to us. I’ve fallen in love with the historic craft of engraving. It’s infinitely satisfying to see my ideas become sketches, then printing blocks, then beautiful letterpress prints. Wood engraving and printing on the iron handpress give me new opportunities to express myself, to experiment, and to create in a new medium. Letterpress and wood engraving? A match made in history!

thanks for bearing with me When we made the trek from Florida to Seattle, we did it in epic road trip style. This is a wood engraving, inspired by a photo we took while on our cross country trip. One of the trip’s highlights was a drive-through animal sanctuary in Montana. We sent home a video from the trip - but our families didn’t enjoy the two hours of baby bear video footage nearly as much as we did! Bear with me...punny, yes, but a sincere sentiment.

colin & lauren’s home This sweet mid-century modern home in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle is home to the Day family: Colin, Lauren, and their sons, Jonah and Simon. Colin is a graphic designer and was one of the first people we met when we arrived in Seattle. We were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed recent grads looking for design jobs, and Colin kindly took Brad out to coffee and introduced him to other members of the design community. Colin and Lauren have been really good friends to us these past five years. We’ve spent many evenings on their couch and around their fire pit in the backyard. They’ve walked with us through marriage scuffles, big decisions, and life in general. I think their home is the perfect representation of their entire family, both parents and kids. Everything in their home reflects their personal style: classically modern and put together—but colorful, welcoming, and inspiring. let’s write letters Letter writing is visceral. It requires all the senses. You touch the paper, smell the ink, see the letters scrawl across the page, and listen as you shuffle the card into the envelope. Letter writing is personal. It requires time. You thoughtfully choose the card, and you carefully craft the message. Letter writing is intimate. Personal. Not only for you as you touch, smell, see, and hear, but also for the receiver. There is joy in opening the mailbox and finding a hand-addressed envelope. There is anticipation and excitement in carefully deciphering the script, finding the love and care literally written into the paper. What a rare gift in the age of Twitter and Facebook and e-mail. This world we live in sends mass communication as a default. It’s loud and busy and makes the introverted parts of me pretty overwhelmed. I’ve spent the last five years of my life fixated on the history, craft, and tactile nature of letterpress. I design and print vessels for correspondence. But I want to be more than just a creator of stationery. I want to be a writer of letters and an ambassador of quiet communication. I want to practice what I preach. Letter writing isn’t lost. It’s right here. It always has been. On greeting cards, personalized stationery, sticky notes, and cocktail napkins. It requires your time and attention, yes, but the payoff is big. It’s real and authentic and fosters relationships. Together, let’s write letters.

sara mcnally What is your role at Constellation? This whole thing was my kooky dream. I’m the owner/operator, graphic designer, letterpress printer, and jack-of-all things that need to get done. I bear both the responsibilities and joys of owning a business, managing a little team, and getting the loopy fine artist and obsessive “type A” parts of my personality to work together. I’ve definitely learned on the job! Why did you do things the hardest way possible? I’m a glutton for punishment. Nah, just kidding. I really really love what I do. For keeps. brad mcnally What is your role at Constellation? I am co-founder, husband, designer, and “secret art director.” I help out with web design, decision making, critiques, and moving heavy things. In your words, how did Constellation come about? Sara and I took History of Graphic Design in college, and when we got into the invention of the printing press and movable type, things got interesting. We graduated and moved (with our 1st tabletop press) to Seattle in 2009. Sara took a class on letterpress printing at the School of Visual Concepts and loved it. She then apprenticed for a year at Myrtle Alley Press. We decided to take the dive into small business when we found a C&P platen press for sale. It was a “rust bucket” and Sara worked for a long time getting it back into printing order. We have since expanded both our space and our collection of presses. I think the most surprising thing is how many rad people are interested in what we do and want to join with us in community.
suzi mantle What is your role at Constellation? As in every small business, I wear a variety of different hats. One hat that I wear is that of bookkeeper and accountant. I handle all things related to money – Payroll, Accounts Payable, Billing, Accounts Receivable, Taxes, etc. The second hat that I wear is Inventory. I keep track of our products in Quickbooks from initial set-up & numbering to logging sales and monitoring what items need to be reprinted or raw materials need to be ordered. I also help with packaging, shipping and monitoring the Etsy store. I love all my hats and being a part of Constellation & Co. I have had the privilege of watching it grow from a dream to the wonderful reality it is today.
holly power What is your role at Constellation? I get to field all incoming estimate requests, put together quotes, and set up client meetings. Essentially I’m the first “face” that new clients see. I also get to do some fun odd jobs that need doing! Sometimes I write snippets of copy, help upkeep the Etsy store, look for new shops that might be interested in carrying our products, etc. I wrote and read a ton in college, so I’m pretty good at coming up with words! I enjoy the process of client communication, because I love using the right words to connect with people.

All of our products are letterpress printed by hand on our Chandler & Price platen press or our gorgeous 20th Century Reliance iron handpress. Due to the handmade nature of this printing process, slight variations in ink coverage are to be expected and are part of why we all love letterpress!

Shipping cost will be assessed and added to your invoice by package size/weight. Most orders ship within 2-3 days, but larger orders may be subject to production time of 1-2 weeks. If your order will take longer than 3 days, we will contact you with an estimated delivery date. Show orders will be filled within 3-6 weeks.
returns/refunds If items arrive defective or damaged, please contact us within 7 days. All defective items must be returned to us for a refund or exchange. Once we’ve heard from you, we’ll send you a pre-paid shipping label to return the item at our cost. When you return the damaged item(s), let us know if you would like a replacement item, a credit on your account for a future purchase, or a full refund for the purchase price of the item(s).
earth friendly practices Both of our production presses are “human powered,” and operated by hand or foot. If we collected enough candles, we could do a full day of printing without using electricity at all! Our clear sleeves are a sustainable, eco-friendly product. They’re made from plants and are certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute. Our cards and envelopes are primarily sourced from Waste Not Paper. Their paper comes from mills that practice responsible, sustainable forestry as certified by objective 3rd parties. Many of their products are created using renewable energy sources, such as hydro power or wind power. Both cards and envelopes are produced without elemental chlorine (PCF), and have recycled content containing at least 30% post-consumer waste. Several of our products are printed on “chipboard,” a 100% post-consumer waste reclaimed paper stock. We clean our presses with reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emission solvents and recycle our ink waste as much as possible. We also re-use or recycle all of our scrap paper, office paper, and shipping supplies.

Our collaborations with Seattle Seed Co. and Treehouse Point have produced beautiful products that neither business could create alone.
