7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE
BOOK REVIEW
By: Josepha Mafubo Communication Department; 2nd year
This book was published for the first time in 1989. More than 25 million copies have been sold worldwide, in 38 different languages. Stephen Covey was Times magazine’s 25th most influential American, one of the world’s foremost leadership authorities, organizational experts, and thought leaders. His legacy to the world is Principle-Centered Leadership and his many contributions will live on through the principles he taught and expressed. Before introducing the habits, he proceeds to discuss the broad topic of our state of mind, using topics such as paradigms and principles. The seven habits move us through the following crucial stages: Habit 1-3 (The process of taking the responsibility of yourself and your life as a whole) Habit 4-6 (Learning how to collaborate with others for better outcomes and higher effectiveness) Habit 7 (Enables the better use of the six habits, through renewal of important aspects of life).
The seven habits are: 1. Being proactive- this means choosing to look at what you can control and influence, and using those to improve your situation. 2. Begin with the end in mind- this involves doing something that will lead you somewhere different from that end goal. 3. Put first things first- this is the habit of prioritizing the most important and the most urgent in whatever role we are in. 4. Think win-win- This means finding ways to build interdependent relationships that are mutually beneficial to all parties 5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood- once you gain a deep understanding of where the audience is coming from, then you can respond in a way that truly addresses their concerns. 6. Synergize- The general benefit of this habit rings true no matter what decade you’re in. 7. Sharpen the saw- One’s self is the most valuable tool that one can use. Practice makes perfect people.
3
Covey believes that people must impact other people for solidarity and longevity both mentally and physically. At some point while reading the book, I began to anticipate some sort of affirmation of Covey’s religious beliefs. I discovered he is a Mormon. This perturbed me since I do not accept Mormon beliefs as truth. Mormons believe that a person has to prove themselves worthy in order to be permitted into one of three “kingdoms,” or heavens. Their performance determines their “degree of glory.” It is this hierarchy of works that has been transmuted into principles and habits and become the basis of Covey’s book. I personally do not put much merit in people’s abilities. The book remains a topseller for the simple reason that it ignores trends and pop psychology for proven principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity What habit do you think you need to work on? Music: What’s hot! Mali Music Album
Mali is the third album by American recording artist Mali Music, released on June 18, 2014 by RCA Records and Bystorm Records. It overflows with velvety vocals and smooth grooves where it is split between soulful pop, piano ballads, and the occasional nod to contemporary reggae. My best song in the album definitely has to be ‘Beautiful’, He sings the song with warmth and grace and welcomes his audience into the message. A master work of art it surely is. Mali Music’s musical style welcomes the insta generation to Christ and gives them a christian perspective on worldly issues.

never too young for leadership
JOSEPHA MAFUBO’s
LEADERSHIP JOURNEY By Joy Nyambura Communication Department 3rd year.
“izina niryo muntu.” Rwandese proverb meaning, the name is the person.
Josepha Mafubo is a vibrant young lady who is filled with determination and drive. Just as her name ‘Mafubo’ suggests, she is one who more often than not, forgets herself to support and especially spare others shame and deprivation. Family and Education Being the third born from a family of four, Josepha is a true testimony of God’s love and mercy. Born in Rwanda, she attended St. Joseph Ecumenical School, and later went to Ecole International Espoir where she did her O level and A level. Having prayed and asked God for an opportunity to study in a good university after high school, Josepha found her way to Pan Africa Christian University, and blended in perfectly due to

Her love for leadership grew thus giving her the urge to vie for vice president of the student body. SEVEN HUNDRED PEOPLE MISSING By: Josepha Mafubo Communication Department 2nd year
The journey to the realization of a vibrant Alumni Association for Pan Africa Christian University dates back to 1988, when a group of Alumni met informally under the then Principal Dr. Paul Kohls and his wife Lynn. According to existing records, the challenge at that time was the insufficient number of alumni living nearby to sustain an ongoing alumni association.
It however went domant for years.

noble woman; balanced life
Take with me a journey of discovering a mother, wife, pastor and a therapist who has stood against all odds to give her best. Meet Marion Mutwiri, a PhD student in Marriage and Family Therapy at PAC University. Abigail Adams once said, “ if we mean to have heroes, statesmen and philosophers, we should have learned women”. Marion Mutwiri is a clear example of this. She is undertaking a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy, a course only a handful of men have ventured in. Life and Family Marion is not only a lecturer and a pastor, but also a wife to a pastor that she co-works with. “I value people and relationships” a jovial mother of three states with a wide smile. She continues to say that she considers herself a committed Christian who strives to honor God with her life, hard work and ties with people. “I have hobbies which keep me engaged during my free time. I read, watch movies, and visit scenic sites, I also sing and listen to inspirational music” said Marion. Ministry Marion has been a pastor for several years. Being in the ministerial team, she has had the responsibility of making sure that as a shepherd, all her sheep are well fed and looked after. This prompted her to seek advanced studies in Marriage and Family therapy. “I felt the need to be skilled in the field. This is the exact program I was looking for.”
The Balance “Independence is happiness,” she points out, “The greatest challenge I face as a fulltime employee and a fulltime student is finding the delicate balance between being an excellent worker, and a good student.” Marion foresees PAC University rebirthing itself to being the giant theological training institution it was that provided cutting edge training for dynamic church leaders who integrate faith and education in ministry and public service. Advice to Young People According to the wisest, wealthiest and the most famous man of all times: King Solomon, ‘the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom…’ Proverbs 1:7 The one thing that young people are obligated to do, is be themselves. There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self. “There is no point of equating yourself to another person.” ~Aldous Huxley.

Q
I have come to realize that in my current relationship I am being given only breadcrumbs. I decided to do something about it; completely disappearing for two weeks at best, blocking his calls and texts on WhatsApp. What I am wondering, is that not counterproductive in the sense that it kind of does not make sense if I do all that then go back to him and try the relationship once more?
A
I promote keeping yourself busy and not focused on a guy. Disappearing and blocking. never works. Please reconsider. You might be feeling angry and disappearing might feel right to you, but, what will it accomplish? Is this what you want to pres-
ent to a man as your reaction to behavior that isn't working for you? Being up front is healthier for you. You want to practice awesomeness in every relationship. I've learned that what we practice is what we become. I was with a guy who was verbally abusive, so I picked up a few tricks of my own over the years I was with him. Now I'm with a wonderful, sweet man, and boy, have I let a few mean-spirited lines slip out. I immediately apologized, but I've noticed that he doesn't share deep feelings/concerns anymore. My point? Don't get into the habit of reacting to unaceptable behavior. Get into the habit ofaddressing it and maybe even walking away from it. (Image from: drglover.com)
OPEN QUEstION Why is it with men that ask for a date then don't follow through? An old flame got in touch with me on Facebook and after we messaged for a few weeks he asked if he could take me out for a meal; I said yes and he said he'd get in touch to make arrangement. We were supposed to meet up tonight but he's never mentioned anything about it! Similar thing happened a few months ago with another guy my friend had set me up with.Back and forward, he asked if he could take me on a date. I agreed and then he vanished. This has happened to me numerous times. Is it me? Why do men behave like this? No wonder I've been single so long! This is an open question to the readers. What would you advice this young girl. What should she do? Is she doomed to be single forever? Please send us your advice to: thepackmagazine@gmail.com. The editor wil publish selected responses
