Baschmann Services Inc. Celebrating 35 Years of Selling Top-Notch Equipment
Thirty-five years ago, in 1986, Peter Baschmann proudly hung the shingle on his new construction dealership, Baschmann Services Inc. For several years leading up to the formation of Baschmann Services, Baschmann had worked as a self-employed technician specializing in the repair of heavy equipment serving contractors in western New York. He had a dream, however, of becoming a full-fledged heavy equipment dealership. Thirty-five years later, a combination of Baschmann’s ambitious nature, tremendous guidance and support from his wife, Cindy, and a fiercely loyal and dedicated staff helped him to develop the business that he leads today. Baschmann Services, located in Elma, N.Y., is proud to be a leader in the heavy construction equipment industry. The company offers a uniquely diverse selection of products and services for New York State contractors. It offers a complete package of earthmoving equipment manufacturers to satisfy every imaginable excavating and earthmoving need, and has become one of the leading supply houses in New York State for aggregate and recycling equipment.
When Baschmann Services first opened in April of 1986, it wasn’t much more than an equipment service and repair company. According to Pete Baschmann, president and founder, the first product offering was Royer shredders, “which was essentially a topsoil shredder.” In 1993, Baschmann got his first opportunity to sell earthmoving equipment when a local equipment distributor was going out of business and the Fiat-Allis line became available. This gave him a line of excavators, loaders and dozers. Since 1993, a lot has changed and there has been a tremendous amount of growth. Baschmann Services has built a core of manufacturers who have worked with them to build a significant customer base for the earthmoving division of the company. Expansions have been done on the facility in phases on a regular basis over the past 35 years, more than tripling the size of the original facility, including what is today a large shop, major warehouse storage facility, spacious offices and a recently renovated showroom. In early 2021, Baschmann Services invested in blacktopping the entirety of its equipment yard and currently is building a rental

We have seen tremendous growth in this equipment category. Hitachi has given us tremendous support over the years, which continues to help us grow. In 2003, Pete and Cindy Baschmann made the decision to take on the ASV tracked skid steer/ compact tracked loader line. “Back in 2003, ASV was very much a niche machine. It had not become the accepted part of every equipment fleet that it is today. “We had a lot of pioneering to do. Because the undercarriage technology has improved dramatically, these machines have now replaced the wheeled skid steer in many applications. In fact, today, tracked skid A Kawasaki 60 Z7 with an oversized 6 cu.-yd. bucket and 4-ft.-wide flotation tires steers outsell the wheeled skid steer models.” for use in a peat moss bog. ASV offers seven models of tracked skid steer machines as well as two wheeled skid steer models. Because the the ASV machines, including putting a 40-in. cold planer on a ASV machine generates tremendous power and auxiliary flow as tracked skid steer, which would normally never be considered well as superior cooling, Baschmann Services has been able to but, with the stability and performance of the ASV machine, it get involved in a lot of innovative engineering applications with excels in that application. 6
Service is the hallmark of every successful equipment dealer and Baschmann Services provides sterling support — often that service begins at the parts counter.
Having the right attachments to pair up with excavators and loaders is critical to satisfy excavating contractors’ needs. One of Baschmann Services’ first major suppliers, going back to 1999 in that category at that time, was known as Kent hammers and has since become known as FRD. “At the time, other Kobelco dealers were having success with Kent. We certainly have rock conditions in our territory and Kent was a well-known and respected name. They also had pedestal models available that were a good fit for our aggregate division. The hammer market has a wide variety of competitors that would fall into different categories of quality and FRD is certainly one of the premium products. “Virnig Manufacturing supplies a lot of attachments for our ASV line. They are manufactured in Minnesota, by a family-owned company that turns out very high-quality products. They make items that would typically be used on an ASV, such as forks, buckets, and soon, they will be manufacturing a forestry mulcher.” To help fill out certain applications for hammers, such as the ability to do post pounding and to fill other size categories of hammers, Baschmann Services also represents Soosan and Toku hammers. Another one of Baschmann Services’ long-term equipment suppliers is Eager Beaver, which has been manufacturing lowboys and flatbeds for 75 years. For the hauling of smaller equipment, Baschmann Services has become a Felling dealer. Felling has developed a reputation for having innovative product designs and offers customization to suit any customers’ needs for unique applications. Since 1998, Baschmann Services has been a Carlton stump grinder and chipper dealer. It manufactures a huge variety of selfpropelled and tow-behind machines in the stump grinder market. It also has been an innovator with the Carlton Razor Cutting System as well as remote-control systems for its stump grinders. Baschmann Services has had tremendous success getting the Carlton product in the hands of arborists, contractors and municipalities across western New York State, the company said. CEG 7

with area contractors, namely matching up the right piece of equipment for the right application for the project the contractor is dealing with, regardless of whether it’s for a purchase or a shortterm or long-term rental. “We look at every customer who comes through the door as a potential long-term customer and it is critical that right from the start every recommendation that we make to that individual is right for them and in their best interest,” Tracy said. “Is renting the right option for them? Is the machine they are looking for really only going to be used for the job that they are currently working on or can it be utilized in their next job? If it is a purchase, is leasing possibly a better alternative? Will the lower payment of a lease option be to their benefit? Again, keeping in mind what the customer’s needs are, not what our needs are. “It’s surprising how often you come across a customer who does not understand the tax benefits of making a purchase versus a long-term rental can be, so it’s important that we cover all of the bases. Every year around tax time, we still get a flood of customers who realize that they need to make that year-end purchase for tax purposes.” Tapping into its 35 years of experience as a company enables Baschmann to offer sound advice followed by reasonable pricing and great support after the sale, Tracy added. Along with the risks and pressures that come with them, Tracy has found a tremendous amount of satisfaction over the years, particularly in watching some of Baschmann Services’ customers grow partially as a result of their relationship with each other. “There are a lot of customers who have become good friends over the years and cases where I may have originally dealt with the father and today I am dealing with the grandson or granddaughter. As the companies have grown generationally the
companies have also grown significantly in size and scope. I can think of one customer in particularly who didn’t even have a checkbook when I first met him and now owns a significant equipment fleet.” Just as important as being able to creatively solve equipment challenges, or maybe even more important, is your ability to support the equipment that you sell, according to Tracy. “Right from the beginning when I started here, one of the most impressive things about Baschmann Services has been their commitment to supporting the customer. Whenever, wherever a customer goes down or experiences a part failure we stand behind them and our service department always stands behind the work they do. “When I first came to work here, Mike Peters was the service manager and we quickly became friends and developed a strong working relationship going to extremes to keep each other’s customers happy. We have the same commitment with parts. If we can’t get the part someone needs fast enough, we will take it off of a machine in our fleet to get the customer up and running. “Everyone here is committed to product support. Just about anyone, including myself, could find themselves throwing a part in the car and delivering it to a job site.” Today, the sales staff of Baschmann Services has grown well beyond the days when Bob Tracy started and he represented the entire company. Currently, the sales staff is made up of Dick Amidon, who covers southern Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties; Bill Kirsch, who covers Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming and Alleghany counties; Art Garvey who covers the Finger Lakes region, the North Country region and the Southern Tier region of New York State; and Luke Klob, who covers central and eastern New York State. I have found myself working in some very unique circumstances. Probably the most interesting was working on a new subway station beneath the streets of Manhattan; something an aggregate house eight hours away in Buffalo, New York would not typically tackle.” In the project, 24-ft. diameter tubes were being drilled and excavated with the materials being crushed on site beneath the streets of the city in extremely cramped quarters. Due to limited space above and below the crusher, the crew was having difficulty having enough clearance to feed the crusher and getting access to the area beneath the crusher to clean out spillage. Baschmann developed an apron feeder that crew could put ahead of the crusher to feed it, without having to mine out the materials unnecessarily above the crusher just to make room to feed it — essentially, they could load the crusher from the apron feeder from a much lower height. Baschmann also made modifications on a Lippmann crusher to protect it from some of the materials like ceiling bolts and other debris in the feed. “We ended up involved in that project by word of mouth from a contractor who had a good experience working with us and who thought we would have the ingenuity to help them meet some very unique challenges. “Reflecting on the opportunity that Baschmann Services has given me, it really is something special and it works out well for the customer. Virtually any piece of equipment I sell I can install and operate; that lets me bring to the table a breadth of knowledge that the customer does not necessarily experience in dealing with other dealers. And the same guy who sold them the equipment and set up the equipment can also train his people. As a result, we are now doing business on some level with a large percentage of the top contractors in New York State.” CEG
