SL Chasse Uses Potain HDT 80 to Build Tower at Factory Hudson, N.H., based SL Chasse Welding and Fabricating Inc., found a sweet job for a Potain HDT 80 at the Lindt and Sprungli chocolate factory in Stratham, N.H. SL Chasse brought in the Potain HDT 80 self-erecting crane to build a new steel equipment tower at the Lindt plant. Manitowoc Crane Group distributor Shawmut Equipment Company of Manchester, Conn., and Norfolk, Mass. supplied and assembled the crane. SL Chasse built the tower 130 ft (39.6 m) within an existing structure at the plant. The ability of the HDT 80 to set up close to the existing structure and reach out and over the structure proved ideal for the project. The HDT 80 has a maximum reach of 148 ft. (45.1 m), a maximum capacity of 13,230 lbs. (6,001 kg), and a capacity of 2,890 lbs (1,301 kg) at its maximum radius. SL Chasse’s operator found the elevator-style operator’s cab a helpful advantage on the job and was able to continually change the position of the cab on the crane’s mast as the tower grew in height. With a telescoping mast, the HDT 80 can set up at three different mast heights and offers an off-settable jib for additional height. “This was the best crane for the job,” Steve Chasse, president and owner of SL Chasse said. Liebherr has expanded its range of lattice boom cranes with the new model LR 1600/2 crawler crane.
Liebherr Expands Lattice Boom Crane Range With LR 1600/2 Liebherr has expanded its range of lattice boom cranes with the new model LR 1600/2 crawler crane. This new crane achieves its 660-ton (600 t) maximum load capacity with a 157-ft. (48 m) main boom and derrick system at a 33-ft. (10 m ) working radius. The maximum load moment is 58,478,000 ft.-lbs. / 8,085 ton-meters. The maximum 630-ft. (192 m) system length is reached with a 315-ft. (96 m) main boom and a 315-ft. (96 m) luffing jib, in operation with derrick system. This system length is ideal for plant construction, enabling the crane to work over the top of tall buildings, according to the manufacturer. With a derrick boom of up to 118 ft. (36 m) in length, the maximum 772,000-lb. (350,173 kg) derrick ballast is adjusted from a 33- to a 59ft. (10 to 18 m) radius as a suspended ballast without a guide and under full load. This design principle has already been tried and tested on other Liebherr crawler cranes. A ballast trailer, the radius of which can be adjusted from 43 to 59 ft. (13 to 18 m) using a hydraulic guide, is available as an optional extra. It also is possible to use the ballast trailer from the LR 1750. The maximum 419,000-lb. (19,055 t) superstructure ballast comprises standard 22,000-lb. (9,979 kg) slabs that are positioned on the brackets mounted on the sides of the slewing platform. A wide, heavy base slab is not necessary. Cost efficiency in operations assembling wind turbines was a vital criterion in the development of the LR 1600/2. The SL main boom can be erected with a length of up to 335 ft. (102 m) without derrick system. Developed from this system, a 354-ft. (108 m) SL system with a 39 ft. (12 m) fixed jib is available, which, again without derrick or second crane, can be erected to underhook heights of 384 ft. (117 m). With load capacities of over 210,000 lbs. (95,254 kg), this configuration is ideal for mounting wind turbines from the 3-MW class atop 330
ft (100 m) towers, according to the manufacturer. With derrick system, the same turbines can be mounted on 395 ft. (120 m) towers. The SL system also offers operators the advantage of being able to insert the boom sections inside one another for transport, thereby reducing overall transport volumes. In a further major step towards greater economies in crane operation, the same head section can be used for all boom systems. In addition, the boom-head adapter also serves as a reducing section in boom extensions. Even when attaching the vessel lifter, no additional components are required, since it is part of the luffing jib. The dimensions and weights of the individual components are such that the new LR 1600/2 can be moved extremely economically, according to Liebherr. The 163,140-lb. (73,999 kg) basic machine, comprising crawler center section, slewing platform and A frame, is just 10 ft. 6 in. (3.2 m) tall. The weight of the basic machine can be reduced to 125,665 lbs. (57,001 kg) if the A frame is re-moved. This option is available as standard and means that the crawler center section and slewing platform can be transported as one and a quick connection can be saved. No crane components exceed the economical transport width of 9 ft. 10 in. (3 m). The height of the lattice boom sections is such that ballast slabs can be stowed underneath the lattice sections during transport on a semi low-loader. The new LR 1600/2 is powered by a six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine. Six winches are available for use in operations. The new 660-ton (599 t) crawler crane is also fitted with a new crane cab. The wide, roomy cab offers a second seat and three firmly mounted LICCON monitors, which provide comprehensive information to ensure safe operations. The third monitor features the Liebherr LICCON work planner. CQ

McCrory dubbed it a “special place that brings NASCAR’s history to life and preserves that history in the appropriate environments.” The Hall of Fame, located in Charlotte’s Center City, will be developed, designed and operated by the city of Charlotte and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. The estimated cost of $160 million will primarily be funded by a new two percent hotel/motel tax and contributions from the state of North Carolina and the private sector. Scheduled to open no later than spring 2010, it was designed in concept by world renowned architecture firm Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, who have designed iconic buildings all over the world, including Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the expanded Louvre in Paris, New York City’s Javits Convention Center and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Kenna refers to one contractor client who “kept renting it for jobs.” “The bigger contractors know our equipment and ask for specific cranes,” Kenna explained. “Others tell us the weight at a given radius they need. An Atlanta company also has cranes on Charlotte jobs. It’s not unusual for cranes to come from far and wide for major projects. Heede Southeast services the whole southeast and has worked on projects as far away as Daytona, Fla., Huntsville, Ala., Richmond, Va., and Kingsport, Tenn. “Right now we have cranes in Virginia Beach and Raleigh. We’ll be taking down a couple cranes soon, but adding one to the Bank of America project.” It’s an eight-month minimum rental, depending on the job, he said, with a three to four day turnaround between jobs so they can be serviced.

The German-built AC 100/4 has been specifically adapted to meet the requirements of American customers.
Terex Demag Brings the New AC 100/4 to the United States ufacturer. The variable stabilizer system allows each beam leg to be set in any one of four different positions providing adaptability to cope with even the most uncompromising of environments. A water-cooled DaimlerChrysler engine provides 445 hp (335 kW). It also boasts a high power-to-weight ratio. The power train design increases vehicle mobility. The independent upper carriage power train with 175 hp (129 kW) provides a good balance between high performance for rapid and/or for simultaneous operational movements with a low fuel consumption. The Terex Demag AC 100/4 works with a 164-ft. (50 m) long main boom with four inner sections for faster times for telescoping out to the full boom length. The Terex Demag AC 100/4 is fitted with a versatile main boom extension (MBE). The 62.3-ft. (19 m) MBE can be offset both at the main boom and at the 26-ft. (8 m) extension.
The German-built AC 100/4 has been specifically adapted to meet the requirements of American customers. First, with a dolly the crane is road homologatable in almost all of the United States because the distance between axles two and three is 8 ft. (2.43 m). Second, road homologation also is possible with 16-in. (40.6 cm) tires. The compact steel design is another significant advantage, according to the manufacturer: The weight, 110 tons (100 t), is distributed on four axles. The Terex Demag AC 100/4 reaches a maximum load moment at 338.5 tons (308 t), with ultimate lifting capacity at 100 tons (90.7 t). The crane’s system length stretches to 252 ft. (77 m) via a 164-ft. (50 m) telescopic boom plus an 88.5-ft. (27 m) main boom extension. At a medium length of 109 ft. (33.3 m) with maximum counterweight the crane hoists 24.6 tons (22.3 t) within a 32.8-ft. (10 m) radius, and still manages 6.1 tons (5.53 t) at 98 ft. (30 m). In transport mode with 12 tons (10.8 t) axle load, a 5.4-ton (4.8 t) counterweight, a 62.3-ft (19 m) main boom extension and 16.00R25 tires, the machine delivers enhanced performance, according to the man17
Link-Belt Produces Its Largest Ever Rough-Terrain Crane The biggest RT crane that Link-Belt has ever produced, the RTC80130 Series II 130-ton (120 t) combines the attributes of the RTC80100 Series II, 100-ton (90.7 t) RT with Link-Belt’s latching boom technology to create a strong easily transported RT.
reach, low height, and gradeability, the 80130 is an ideal solution for industrial sites, according to the manufacturer. Motivating this maneuverability is a Caterpillar C9, 325-hp (242.3 kW) engine with 1,095 ft.-lbs. (1,485 Nm) of torque.
Long and Strong The five-section, 162-ft. (49.3 m) formed boom is made of extra high tensile steel and has one double-acting, single stage hydraulic cylinder with integrated holding valves. This powerful configuration telescopes loads like a conventional full-power boom. Five boom modes vary the extension of the telescoping sections and provide enhanced capacities. To eliminate boom grease, wear pads with Teflon inserts self-lubricate the boom sections. The top and bottom pads, respectively, also are universal making parts inventories simple. Maximum boom tip height is 171 ft. (52.1 m). One of this crane’s major innovations is the 10-ft. (3 m) heavy-lift fly that easily swings and pins into place and is integral to one of the onboard fly options. Alone, it has more than 20 tons (18.1 t) of capacity and lift procedures for two load lines making it ideal for tilt-up work. With the optional 31 to 55-ft. (9.4 to 16.7 m) bi-fold lattice fly, and three 18-ft. (5.5 m) lattice extensions, maximum tip height is 278 ft. (84.7 m) and can be offset to 2, 15, 30, and 45 degrees.
Cab Comfort The galvaneal steel cab is acoustically The five-section, insulated for long days at 162-ft. (49.3 m) the job site. The tinted and formed boom is made of extra tempered glass and extrahigh tensile steel large front windows with and has one wiper and washer ensure a double-acting, clear, safe view of the load. single stage The six-way adjustable, powerhydraulic cylinder with integrated tilting seat keeps the operator holding valves. relaxed and free of fatigue. The armrest controls tilt with the seat further enhancing an ergonomic seating position. Standard heat and optional air conditioning will keep this cab cozy in all climates, according to the manufacturer. Further enhancing safety, the Microgaurd Rated Capacity Limiter has an audio/visual warning system integrated into the dash with anti-two block and function limiter. Available operating data includes boom length and angle, percent of allowed load, and optional third wrap indicator. It also includes operator settable alarms for maximum tip height, maximum and minimum boom angles, and operator defined area. Other Standout Features of the RTC-80130 Series II: • 43,000 lbs. (18,505 kg) of counterweight. • 21,022 lbs. (9,535.4 kg) maximum line pull. • 431 fpm (131.4 mpm) maximum line speed. • Supported 24/7 by Link-Belt Preferred including online manuals, literature, a ground bearing calculator, and 3D Lift Plan. For more information, visit www.linkbelt.com.
Low to the Road Based on its 100-ton sibling, the 80130 was designed from the beginning for transportability. It transports in two loads with the main load less than 94,000 lbs. (42,637.7 kg) with the boom, both winches, threepiece fly, and tires attached. On a trailer, the load height is less than 14 ft. (4.3 m) and, without the counterweights and outrigger boxes, is less than 10 ft. (3 m) wide. And this crane can be disassembled and ready for transport in one hour with no helper crane. The hydrostatic drive has variable speed piston pumps supplying hydraulic power to all six wheel drive motors for creep control. The turn radius is 21 ft. (6.4 m) for the 26-ft. (7.92 m) long carrier. This drive system, along with smaller tires, gives an overall height of only 12 ft. 2.5 in (3.72 m). A switch in the cab controls the four independent steering modes: two-wheel front, four-wheel rear, six-wheel, and crab. With a 46-ton (41.7 t) pick and carry capacity, long 18

Manitowoc Introduces New Grove TMS9000E Truck Crane Manitowoc’s new Grove truck crane — the TMS9000E — replaces the TMS900E. The 110-ton (100 t) capacity crane has a 36- to 142-ft. (11 to 43 m) five-section, full-power boom featuring Grove’s Megaform shaping for improved strength and rigidity. The boom also features Manitowoc’s Twin-Lock boom-pinning technology. Doyle Bryant, director of product development and marketing for Grove in the Americas, said the TMS9000E’s boom will differentiate the crane in the field. “Truck cranes have to travel between job sites so there’s always a focus on roadability,” he said. “But once it gets to the job, the crane needs to perform. The TMS9000E’s Megaform boom, with Twin-Lock technology, will provide superior performance.” Other upgrades to the TMS9000E include new chassis and superstructure cabs, new boom support and counter-
weight support designs and improved accessibility for service and maintenance. Maximum tip height for the crane is 151 ft. (46 m). The crane also features a manually offsettable (at 0, 20 and 40 degrees) bi-fold lattice swingaway extension. It increases maximum tip height to 207 ft. (63 m). A hydraulic version of this extension also is available and can be offset from 5 to 40 degrees. Lattice insert extensions are available to increase maximum tip height to 237 ft. (72 m). ...
Need a Taxi? Our latest offering is the most versatile Manitex yet. The new 5096S Truck Mounted Crane with 152’ tip height, offset jib and a strong load chart is an unbeatable value that replaces traditional, more expensive, solutions. If it’s Power Distribution, the 124SX, 35124C and 40124S provide the widest selection of options. All three platforms have man basket heights to 166’. Heavy Lifts pay the bills? The 40124SHL provides more capacity at radius than any boom truck in the market. If Duty Cycle is the key, all Manitex S and SX series boom trucks are configured with feather soft controls for multifunction operation, continuous rotation, retracted outrigger charts and oil coolers as standard. The 30112S, our latest addition to the S series line, reaches new heights with a maximum tip height of 168’. Payload necessary? The 26101C weighs up to 5,000# less than competitive models and the 30102C provides up to 10,000# payload on a 54,000 GVWR chassis. Wireline Work? The 102WL provides 30 ton crane capacity and the 124WL offers 134’ tip height without a jib. Truss work is made efficient with the 2281T, the highest capacity tractor mount on three axles. Five new SC series models support Sign Erection and Service with working heights from 62’ to 97’. Our newest, the SC-85 provides 85’ working height and 12 ton crane capacity. expects the cranes, which he said are “constantly working,” to remain on the job for two to three years. “Two or three will be 500 to 600 feet in the air when done.” Working toward LEED certification, the Bank of America project seeks to be one of the most environmentally conscious spaces. So many cranes are required for various Charlotte projects, Heede pulled cranes from other locations and hired additional operators. Luckily, Kenna said, the south Florida boom has slowed and many operators are looking for work. “We get a lot of calls from operators in south Florida, Atlanta and other areas that were once booming but now are slowing down a little bit. Operators will go to where the work is.” There’s plenty of work in Charlotte, and Kenna expects that trend to continue for quite a while. “A lot of jobs are just starting out. By the end of the year we should have seven more cranes up in downtown Charlotte. One crane has been there for two years and will probably be there for two more.”
By Lori Lovely CEG CORRESPONDENT
“There’s a lot of blue in the air,” observed Jason Kenna, service manager of Heede Southeast Inc., in Pineville, N.C. — 15 minutes from downtown Charlotte. That’s not sky he’s talking about; it’s the blue of Heede cranes. Twenty of the 25 cranes dotting the skyline in downtown Charlotte belong to Heede. Four — soon to be five — Linden Comansa 21LC550 tower cranes, the biggest in their fleet with a lifting capacity of 40,000 lbs. (18,143 kg), are at work on the Bank of America Corporate Center, known as the Super Block, a high-rise office tower featuring an adjacent redesigned Ritz-Carlton hotel with 150 rooms on 17 floors. The new $400 million 32-story, 750,000-sq.-ft. office tower is being erected across from the corporate headquarters of the Charlotte-based Bank of America, one of the world’s largest financial institutions, with more than 5,700 retailbanking offices. Scheduled for completion in 2010, the new tower will house approximately 1,200 Bank of America employees and other tenants. The building will feature a glass-enclosed atrium and winter garden for retail shops and special events, as well as an expanded skyway connected to neighboring Founders Hall Tower. A new parking deck will add 700 additional spaces to accommodate the new tenants. General contractor Balfour Beatty Construction, headquartered in Dallas (previously Centex Construction) is leasing the cranes and operators, who are working double shifts on two of the cranes. Kenna
Birds of a Feather Not all of Heede’s cranes are congregated at the Bank of America projects. Kenna ran down his list of several big projects: Across the street from the Super Block, there are two cranes on another project. Two cranes are on-site at a new high-rise residential unit: a Linden Comansa 21LC400 with 370 ft. (112.7 m) of hook height and a 21LC290 with 350 ft. (106.6 m) of hook height. “Both have been tied in and top-climbed once and will be once more,” he noted. 6
Photo courtesy Heede Southeast Inc. The NASCAR Hall of Fame promises to be a big tourist draw in the city of Charlotte.
Although the company’s primary involvement currently is with downtown residential condominiums, the commercial side is picking up because office vacancy is at an all-time low in Charlotte. Michael Smith, president and CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners, said that Charlotte has “the tightest downtown office market in the U.S.,” with 0.7 percent vacancy. Charlotte’s Center City is building another 4 million sq. ft. of office space over the next three years, a 28 percent increase in office space. Two cranes are working on Lowe’s corporate office parking deck expansion in Mooresville. A Linden 8752 had been on-site since June and a 21LC400 since August. Both came down in April. And two more are in use at the Epicenter in downtown Charlotte. The old convention center is a focal point for the city and is being converted into a mixeduse residential high-rise. “The city of Charlotte is booming,” Kenna marveled. “It’s the most cranes we’ve ever had in Charlotte. In ’97 to ’98 there was a little boom. We had nine cranes up and thought that was something. Now we’ve got 20 downtown. It’s great having them here if service is an issue,” he added. Heede’s equipment rental agreement includes full service and parts throughout the rental period at no additional cost. Heede factory-trained technicians do all service work, erection, climbing and dismantling. “We were the first tower crane company in the U.S. to offer a turnkey package to rental customers,” Kenna said. “It covers erection, dismantling, freight to the job, parts and labor.” Founded in 1958 by Kenna’s grandfather, Thomas, Heede remains a family-run business, with Kenna’s father and brother working in the
company as well. The senior Kenna purchased his first Linden Tower Crane that year, a model L30/60, mainly for use in the concrete formwork business. Four years later, the company became a dealer for B.M. Heede, at which time it began growing its rental fleet and entered into the tower crane rental market. Heede Southeast’s first “Flat Top” model 8000 Linden Gower Crane, manufactured in Sweden, was purchased in 1985. Ten years later, the North Carolina company became a dealer for Linden Comansa tower cranes, manufactured in Pamplona, Spain. It’s the only brand of crane they carry. “Our fleet consists strictly of all Linden Comansa tower cranes,” Kenna confirms. In 1998 Heede bought its first LC 8000 from Spain. Linden Comansa’s flat top design allows for faster and safer erections, as well as less separation in height between cranes (on crowded job sites) due to the absence of a cathead and pendant lines. In addition, the modular system permits the creation of more than 40,000 tower crane configurations. Not only do the cranes increase production, but they also enhance safety on the job site, according to the company. Each has crane-to-crane radio for multi-crane jobs. One especially popular model is the 5211 — the “baby” or “city” crane. So named because it’s very small, the 5211 competes with forklifts on tight job sites. Other advantages are its six-hour erection and dismantle time and its radio remote-controlled capability (particularly useful for tight urban sites). “They use it for stick-built condos,” Kenna said, adding that it keeps drivers out of the mud and permits horizontal travel for better efficiency see CHARLOTTE page 16 7
