Nice and quiet and smooth,” Hatcher said. “These are excellent cranes. They are very dependable from smooth hydraulics to faster boom and winch speeds. This allows for faster cycling times. Tree work is hard on any crane and National really steps up to the plate. And the outrigger configurations make difficult set ups very easy,” Maltby agreed. Maltby has been purchasing equipment from Woods CRW since 1998. “We like everything about them,” Maltby said. “From dealing with Mike Sylvia and his sales/management team right through to the parts and service department.” “We get great service at Wood’s CRW. No complaints here,” Hatcher agreed. Recent statistics released in February stated that the tree crews had removed 15,400 trees from the northern section of Worcester since the work began on Jan. 5. As work continues in 2009, approximately 22,000 trees will be removed. Once all the trees have been cleared, a period of four years must pass before an area can be considered completely free from the beetles. CQ
feet of reach, it allows us to reach some trees that other cranes cannot,” Cicoria stated. The five-man crew from Maltby & Co. uses two methods for removing the trees. In the first, a man in a bucket truck puts the proper rated sling around the limb and saws it off. Then the crane moves the limb to the ground where it is chipped down to the required size of less than 1 in. (2.54 cm) in diameter using a Woodsman 18XX. The wood chips, which are deregulated, can then be used as biomass. On trees where the bucket truck is not needed, the crew uses the “rope and saddle” method, in which a man climbs the tree, puts the proper rated sling around the limb and saws it off before it is taken away by the crane. According to the Maltby crew, the cranes are essential for the job because the safety risk of doing the job without them is too high. Doug Hatcher, a crane operator for 20 years, is pleased with the 2001 1500 National Crane he’s been using on the job. The crane is a 36 ton (32.7 t) and has a 127 ft. (38.7 m) main boom. “This is a nice crane. Good boom length. Fairly compact chassis. 10

Knuckle Boom Cranes Added to Extensive Lineup at Terex Terex Cranes is now offering knuckle boom cranes as a part of its broad portfolio to meet the varied needs of its customers worldwide. “With a transition from our construction segment to our cranes segment, we are well positioned for our experts to work together to respond to customer and market needs. Terex Cranes is truly a one-stop shop for a wide range of lifting equipment and this is a benefit to all customers,” said Jim Robbins, vice president and general manager of operations. The knuckle boom range includes a full line of loader cranes with a maximum load moment from 9,590 to 442,540 ft. lbs. (13 to 600 kNm). For the 55 basic models there are 230 boom options available, and with eight different hydraulic extensions up to 69 ft. (21 m) reach is possible. With a load-bearing capacity of 9,590 to 41,300 ft. lbs. (13 to 56 kNm) and a light own weight, the “small” series cranes are quick to mount and easy to operate for maximum flexibility. The “medium” series cranes are fitted with state-of-the-art technolo-
gy and achieve a high degree of precision. They are designed for trucks from 8 to 24 tons (7.5 to 22 t) and feature a capacity from 47,940 to 177,010 ft. lbs. (65 to 240 kNm). The “large” cranes range from 184,390 to 442,540 ft. lbs. (250 to 600 kNm) capacity and are especially suitable for trucks weighing more than 26.4 tons (24 t). Special features include an optional hydraulic load sensing system, continuous slewing gear and a wide range of fittings such as Z-arms or winches. These cranes are faster in operation than comparable cranes with the same capacity. Customization, such as for the brick and block industry or military recovery vehicles, also is possible. “We look forward to our continued partnership with our dealers and customers. We are always available and committed to delivering responsive global support,” Pieter Timmers, sales and marketing director, said. For more information, visit www.terex.com.

of this crane on two different jobs, so it was a natural choice to go with this one for this project.” “We have been pleased to see many repeat customers for the Potain self-erectors,” Shawmut Equipment’s Kevin O’Connell said. “Once a crane or construction company tries a Potain self-erector and sees all of the benefits firsthand, that customer typically sees how the self-erectors can be advantageous on a variety of other projects.” Davis echoes that sentiment, “The HDT 80 has been fantastic, just awesome. There have been glitches here and there with the job, like any job, but none at all with the crane or the equipment. The crane has a very small footprint, which really helps us on this project. Our space is limited because the hotel is going in next to a new road that is being put in simultaneously. We don’t have room to spread the equipment out.” All models of Potain self-erecting cranes have space-saving features. Even the largest Potain self-erector, the Potain HDT 80, occupies only a 22-ft. (6.7 m) diameter circle on-site and has an outrigger stance of only 14.9 ft. (4.54 m) by 14.9 ft. The “up and over” design of the Potain selferectors, with a nearly vertical mast and nearly horizontal jib, means that the Potain self-erectors can set up close to a structure. Potain self-erectors also have a long reach and strong capacity. The Potain HDT 80 has
DEW Construction Corporation of Williston, Vt., is using a Potain HDT 80 self-erecting crane to construct the new slope side hotel at the Jay Peak Ski Resort in Jay, Vt. Work on the as-yet-unnamed hotel began in August 2008 and has an anticipated completion date of Feb. 1, 2010. The 57-suite hotel will feature a restaurant, bar, fireplace area, coffee shop, retail space and fitness center. In front of the building will be ground level terraces. Topping out is expected in early May. In the meantime, DEW Construction Corporation is busy erecting structural steel and wood panels, with the Potain HDT 80 leased from Shawmut Equipment Company Inc., Manchester, Conn. DEW chose the Potain HDT 80 because of its long reach, small footprint on-site and quiet electric power. The Potain HDT 80’s radio remote controls also allow the operator to move within and throughout the structure, keep the load visible and communicate with other members of the crew as he hoists and sets materials. A LCD display on the radio controller also gives the operator an array of load indication information. In addition to the radio remote control, the Potain HDT 80 is equipped with an elevator style operator’s cab. The crew, which numbers between 50 and 100 members, is pleased with the crane. “We leased the HDT 80 and put it to work starting in February,” said Jerry Davis, DEW Construction. “We had used the two smaller versions

self-erectors set up on steel outriggers and do not have to be anchored into a concrete slab or erected on elaborate and cumbersome cross bases. The electrical motors of a Potain self-erector are very quiet, making the cranes ideal for job sites with residential neighbors or close-quartered colleges and universities. The Potain self-erectors also do not have an internal combustion engine, eliminating exhaust and adding to their environmentally friendly appeal. The Potain self-erecting cranes have been popular in Europe and overseas for decades and are taking on a growing role in construction projects throughout New England. And for DEW Construction, the Potain HDT 80, and Shawmut Equipment, have been perfect on the Jay Peak resort job. “Shawmut is great to deal with when we need to size a crane and put together a budget. They base the crane recommendations on reach, capacity and take all the aspects of the project into consideration. They are very accommodating.” “Delivery,” continued Davis, “and training of the crew once the crane was on site, have been fantastic. Any maintenance or other issues we’ve had have been taken care of. We are working close to the Canadian border so we’re four-and-a-half to five hours away from them, but they’ve responded very well. Absolutely no issues.” Manitowoc, Wisconsin-based Manitowoc Crane Group is the owner and manufacturer of Potain self-erecting cranes. In fact, Don Sherow, vice president of marketing said, “Twenty percent of Modern’s workforce has more than 20 years of service with the company.” Employee longevity and expertise are a lot of what makes Modern so successful. Two of the most qualified crane technicians in the northeast are keeping things running at the King of Prussia facility. Rick DiJacklin, crane technician, has 27 years of experience and Bill Perry, service manager, has 30 years. “We service all makes of knuckle boom, articulating boom and telescopic boom cranes,” Perry said. “We do Annual Machine Inspections (AMI) that keep cranes compliant with OSHA standards. The AMI includes up to a 175-point inspection, depending on the type of crane. The AMI is done on a 13-month cycle, which keeps Modern’s crane technicians very busy keeping the cranes on the northeast’s many jobsites operating safely. DiJacklin went on to explain, “Our AMI reports provide our customers with guidelines to keep their cranes compliant. Each point is given a pass or fail. Any safety deficiencies are documented and if there are any that the customer doesn’t want to fix, we do not give the certification for OSHA. Of course, customers usually want to be compliant, although they don’t always keep the certificate handy. That’s OK. We’ve faxed many certificates to our customers when they’ve been misplaced.” It’s that extra consideration that Modern strives to offer all customers, all the time. Luffer and all SAE conventional capacity tests on Link-Belt’s 550ton (500-t) 548 lattice boom crawler crane are complete.
Luffer and all SAE conventional capacity tests on Link-Belt’s 550ton (500-t) 548 lattice boom crawler crane are complete. Currently, machines on the test pads at Hitachi Sumitomo’s facility in Saijo, Japan, are completing function testing and load moment calibration and verification. Shipments into North America are planned for the second quarter of 2009. Introduced at ConExpo last March, the 548’s preliminary specifications place the heavy-duty boom at 79 to 275 ft. (24 to 84 m) and the long-range boom at 138 to 354 ft. (42 to 108 m). Complete luffer specifications will be announced soon. Future testing will involve a heavylift attachment. Environmentally Sound Cranes Complete Stellar’s EC Series Stellar Industries Inc. is introducing the EC4000 and EC5000 cranes. These new environmentally friendly models will effectively round out and complete the full line of the Stellar EC Series. The EC4000 is a 4,000-pound (1,814 kg) capacity crane with hydraulic and manual boom reach options of either 16 or 20 ft. (4.87 or 6.09 m). Rated at 16,000 ft-lbs, the EC4000 features a short stowed length 9 ft. 3in. (2.8 m) and a low profile design 28.53 in. (72.4 cm), both of which allow the crane to tuck behind the profile on most chassis cabs. The EC5000 is a 5,000-pound (2,267 kg) capacity crane with a hydraulic and manual boom reach of 20 ft. (6.09 m). This 25,000 ft.-lb. (33,900 nm) rated version also features a low profile design 29.53 in. (75 cm) and short stowed length 11 ft. 3 in. (3.34 m). Much like the EC4000, the EC5000 will fit comfortably behind most chassis cab profiles. Both the EC4000 and EC5000 cranes feature a “Piggy-Back” or double boom design, providing more strength than traditional square boom designs, according to the manufacturer. These new cranes also boast a true gear bearing rotation (full 410 degrees) that uses a high-strength steel ball bearing turntable gear, a high-
strength steel worm gear and a cast-steel worm gear housing. Both cranes also come equipped with radio remote controls and use environmentally friendly hydraulic oil that is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and is recyclable and biodegradable. Other features include specifically designed and manufactured hydraulic cylinders for each particular model, allowing the crane to effectively and efficiently lift what it is designed to lift. The planetary winch system is equipped with a 1.8 hp (1.3 kW) permanent magnet electric motor with a 315:1 planetary gear reduction system. This ensures that the winch will never quit lifting before it reaches the full rated capacity, according to the manufacturer. “The completion of these two crane models puts Stellar Industries in a very competitive position,” said Tim Davison, product manager, bodies and cranes. “Many of our customers needed an affordable crane option that could withstand the call of duty for moderate lifting applications. And in true Stellar fashion, we’ve listened to our customers and provided a product that meets market expectation and exceeds competitive offerings.” For more information, call 800/321-3741 or visit www.stellarindustries.com.

Asian Long Horned Beetle Infestation Lifted From Town ate weaken the tree and eventually kill it. The exit holes left behind by the adults hasten the process of destroying the tree. Unfortunately, the only way to stop the highly destructive and easily spread cycle is to remove the host trees in their entirety and chip them down. During this outbreak in Worcester, which is the first in Massachusetts, (other outbreaks have been recorded in New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Toronto) there have been 6,600 infested trees and 13,000 infected and host trees. The problem became evident during the summer of 2008, although experts estimate that it had its genesis about 10 years ago, when the beetles most likely arrived in hardwood packing materials shipped from overseas.
By Jennifer Hetrick CEG EDITOR
Sometimes the smallest adversaries create a huge amount of damage, requiring the largest of weapons to bring them down. This is the situation in Worcester, Mass., where an infestation of Asian Long Horned beetles is felling the mightiest trees in the area and numerous crews armed with cranes, bucket trucks and wood chippers are fighting to put a stop to the destruction. Asian Long Horned beetles measure no more than 1- to 1.5 in. (2.54 to 3.81 cm) not counting its antennae, yet the destruction they can leave in their wake is massive. The attack on trees starts in the late summer or fall, when the beetles are in their larval stage. At this time they burrow deep into the host tree and feed and grow. The next summer, they emerge as adults who mate and perpetuate the cycle. The tunnels the larvae cre-

The work must be done in cold weather, when the adult beetles have been killed off and only the larvae remain burrowed in the tree. As of March 2009, crews were wrapping up the job until next season, because removing the trees when the adults begin to emerge will simply spread the infestation.

eral contractors, Northern Tree Service, Palmer, Mass., and Mayer Tree Service, Essex, Mass., and 10 subcontractors, among them Maltby & Co. Inc., Stoughton, Mass., and Cicoria Tree Service, Topsfield, Mass., are on the job eradicating the destructive pests. Marc Varricchione, mobile crane salesman, Woods’ CRW, had a chance to see some of the areas where Cicoria Tree Service has been working, using a National crane purchased from Wood’s CRW. “In early January 2009 I met with Mark Cicoria who is the owner of Cicoria Tree Service. He owns a 2008 National 14127A mounted on a 2008 Freightliner, which he purchased from us in or around October 2008. He drove me around the Burncoat Street area in his pickup as he went along to check out the trees and yards, which had been assigned to him that day by Northern Tree Service. The amazing thing to me was this neighborhood’s tree landscape had already been devastated by the ice storm from the previous December. Also, I found it interesting that the tree service companies are being paid per tree based on diameter rather than per hour,” Varricchione said. Mark Cicoria explained, “The companies are paid by the tree because it’s more cost effective for the United States Department of Agriculture and it allows them to set a budget based on the amount of trees that they are removing.”
The Right Equipment A crew from Maltby & Co. explained the equipment and processes used in this important job, which has the eye of the federal government keeping a close watch on the beetles and whether or not they are continuing to spread. Maltby & Co. has National cranes on the job purchased from Wood’s CRW, Worcester, Mass. Five of the 10 cranes on the entire project are National cranes. Bruce Maltby, president of Maltby & Co. Inc., has long employed National cranes in his business. “We bought our first National in 1986. We have purchased five of them over the past 23 years because National Crane is the leading manufacturer with a superior product that retains value in the crane market,” Maltby said. Cicoria and his crew agree that the National cranes are doing a great job on the project. “Our National 1400 is working out great, with 127 see BEETLES page 10 8
