Linden Comansa Goes Fishing to two and a half years, during which the Linden Comansa 16LC185 tower crane also contributes to the loading and unloading of all equipment for the operation and maintenance of the nets, the clamping system of the product for sale, etc. The 16LC185 tower crane is erected at the port, about 16.4 ft. (5 m) above the sea level, and has a 14.7 ft. (4.5 m) wide base, with height under hook of 66.2 ft. (20.2 m) and jib-length of 147 ft. (45 m). The crane has a special protection for marine environment named C4M, and wasn’t shipped with a cabin, as the operators need great mobility and visibility of the harbour, for which they operate the crane with a radio remote control. According to Dino Dorigo, Linden Comansa’s area manager in Italy, the 16LC185 is probably the largest tower crane sold and delivered in the transalpine country in the last year. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
Manfredonia is a small coastal town in Italy, situated close to the Gargano promontory in the province of Foggia. Much of its economy is based on fishing, and its fishing fleet is one of the largest in the Adriatic Sea. In addition to the fishing port, Manfredonia also has an industrial harbour of almost 1.8 mi. (3 km) in length, at the end of which the facilities of “Gargano Pesca” are located. The activity of this company is the aquaculture (or aquafarming), for which it has 40 floating cages for breeding species such as seabass, gilthead seabream and corvine, as well as a long-line for farming oysters, mussels and clams about a mile away from the port. Since the beginning of 2015, “Gargano Pesca” has been using a Linden Comansa 16LC185 flat top tower crane with maximum load capacity of 13.2 (12 t). Every day, this crane is indispensable for the transhipment of containers with 11 tons (10 t) of food to the cages that “Gargano Pesca” installed in open sea and that annually produce about 1,322 tons (1,200 t) of fish. The breeding period lasts an average of two

GMK5250L — First to Feature VIAB Turbo Clutch, Integrated Retarder Manitowoc announced a new Grove all-terrain crane for the global market and as with other Grove launches of recent years it offers several unique innovations. The 275 ton (250 t) capacity Grove GMK5250L has a strong reach and load chart. It also offers enhanced maneuverability and driver comfort, which it delivers due to its inclusion of a VIAB turbo clutch and integrated retarder — the first ever mobile crane to feature the system. The VIAB turbo clutch module eliminates both fluid overheating and clutch burning, while enabling wear-free starting and braking. It also contributes to fuel savings and on the GMK5250L fuel consumption is estimated at approximately 30 percent below that of its predecessor, the GMK5220, according to the manufacturer. The “L” designation for the GMK5250L indicates it is a long boom all-terrain crane, and in this case the main boom is 229 ft. (70 m), which also includes Grove’s Megaform shaping for better strength and stability. With its long boom length, the GMK5250L can offer more reach both vertically and horizontally, allowing owners to take on a greater range of jobs with the crane. Boosting overall reach is a 68.8 ft. (21 m) hydraulic swing-away jib, which can be extended with either an 26.2 ft. (8 m ) boom extension, two 26.2 ft. jib inserts, or a combination of both for a total possible jib length of 121.3 ft. (37 m). For optimum usage, the full jib also can be operated while the crane is working with its full 229.6 ft. (70 m) boom length extended. Another benefit of the jib is its ability to offer increased offset
of up to 50 degrees compared to a typical 40 degrees on other Grove cranes in its class — plus there is an optional integrated heavy duty jib available. Jens Ennen, senior vice president, all-terrain and truck cranes of Manitowoc, said the new GMK5250L captures many years of improvement and innovation at the Wilhelmshaven factory in Germany, where the crane is built. “This new Grove is packed with innovations that we will also be extending to other new cranes, adding them as standard and giving our customers even more value,” he said. “Design features from us that first raised the bar in all-terrain innovation are now becoming our standard. We are continuing to work with the latest technology and this will keep us at the forefront of mobile crane efficiency and design.” The Grove GMK5250L is designed for efficiency, giving users a highly versatile crane, packed with the latest innovations. Operators will feel at home in the new Grove GMK5250L superstructure cab, with its crane control system (CCS) and the new boom configurator mode. The standardized CCS is a user-friendly interface that Manitowoc is featuring on all new all-terrain crane models, as well as crawler cranes, roughterrain cranes, truck cranes and tower cranes. The CCS components and operating software have been specifically designed, developed and tested by Manitowoc Engineering and Innovation teams worldwide to ensure the highest reliability standards. The cab also features a new ergonomic jog dial and new joysticks.

Manitowoc announced a new Grove all-terrain crane for the global market and as with other Grove launches of recent years it offers several unique innovations.
The highly intuitive boom configurator mode makes it quick and easy to select the optimum boom position for a specific lift. The operator inputs the lift parameters — radius, load and distance to be moved — and the system calculates the best boom configuration. Once the operator selects the preferred option, the boom automatically extends to the required length. The GMK5250L is powered by a single engine — a concept pioneered by Grove on its Grove GMK6400. On the GMK5250L, the engine is a Tier IV Final/EUROMOT 4 Mercedes-Benz OM471LA, a six cylinder diesel engine with a 520 hp (390 kW) rating and a maximum torque of 2,460 Nm. The engine drives the carrier and powers the superstructure, and on the GMK5250L this is managed by one simple and reliable angular gear box. A single engine means lower fuel consumption during operation, reduced overall weight and less maintenance, meaning the crane is far more economical, according to the manufacturer. With its 13.2 ton (12 t) per axle configuration, and dimensions suited to global roading requirements, the compact Grove GMK5250L offers increased roadability. Compared to the GMK5220, the gross vehicle weight has been reduced to give customers more transportation options including the ability to carry more equipment on the crane. Special attention also has been given to the appropriate axle group spacing and specifically the fact that this exceeds 8 ft. (2.4 m) — a strict requirement for roading mobile cranes in North America. There are additional design features that make the crane far easier to move in countries with stricter axle loading requirements, such as the United States, Canada, Norway, Australia and Japan. Meanwhile at the other end of the scale, in countries where the local requirement is for axle loadings of under 18.1 (16.5 t) (such as the UK),
the crane is able move on the highway with up to 23.1 tons (21 t) of counterweight. As most other cranes in this class are limited to 13 ton (12 t) counterweight on the road in the UK, the Grove GMK5250L offers load chart advantages of up to 50 percent. Once on the job site, the crane can be moved with its full counterweight of 88.1 tons (80 t), saving time that would otherwise be spent installing or removing counterweight sections. Additionally, some of the counterweight slabs are interchangeable with those of the GMK6300L, optimizing logistics and reducing transport costs for customers. An optional self-rigging auxiliary hoist is available too, which eliminates the need for an assist crane during on-site rigging. On site movements are made easier with the inclusion of Grove’s Megatrak independent suspension as well as the all-wheel steer system, which means no axles need to be lifted while moving — again enabling the optimum amount of counterweight to be carried. Another solution on the GMK5250L, which has already featured on the GMK6300L and GMK6400, is the MMI (man machine interface). The MMI allows the suspension to be controlled even while in a locked position. “Customer return on investment has been the key driver in the development of this ground-breaking machine,” said Ennen. “To create a highly versatile crane that is suited to job sites around the world, it was important for us to focus on specifications and load-charts. Customers can expect high utilization rates with this crane too, as we anticipate excellent reliability. We are expecting the GMK5250L to continue the success of other Grove introductions of recent years, such as the GMK6300L which is one of the most popular Grove all-terrain cranes of all time.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) 17

Terex Tower Cranes Transform Miami’s Coastline, Financial District Miami’s coastline and financial district are being transformed by Swire Properties’ latest majestic creation, Brickell City Centre. The $1.05 billion mixed-use development includes a number of high-rise buildings skirting the Miami River just off the coast. This 9.1-acre city-within-a-city project includes 5.4 million sq. ft. (501,676 sq m) of office, residential, hotel, retail and entertainment space, giving a new meaning to urban living. It is estimated that the project will have a $1 billion overall economic impact to the city, creating 3,700 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs after construction is complete. Equally as important for the construction industry, the 3.5-year project — spanning from July 2012 to the end of 2015 — will add 1,700 construction jobs on average each year. The Americaribe/Moriarty Joint Venture is tasked as the general contractor to bring Swire Properties vision to reality. For planning the intricate lifting requirements and for constructing the shopping center, two office space towers, two condominium towers, hotels and apartments, the company trusted the experience and expertise offered by one of the nation’s largest lift equipment companies, Bridgeville, Pa., based Maxim Crane Works L.P. Construction of the structures within the confined City Centre’s space is not easy, and the lifting equipment involved requires careful planning by Maxim Crane. “Jobsite conditions are such that several different types of tower cranes are necessary to accommodate the project’s needs for coverage, while also fitting as many cranes into the project as possible,” said Matt Hyden, vice president of the tower division of Maxim Crane. Maxim Crane’s team works closely with Americaribe/Moriarty JV to provide a safe and economical solution for the project. “Our local sales team has the experience and expertise to partner with the customer to ensure that all of the coordination needed to move in, erect, climb and operate these cranes is perfectly orchestrated to meet the demands of such a critical path project,” said Frank Fioravanti, vice president of the Florida region of Maxim Crane.
reach with the tower cranes,” said Hyden. Each tower crane design was selected to meet specific criteria. Since this is a downtown project, space is at a premium. “We need luffing jibs for work close to adjacent structures and to meet weathervaning restrictions,” said Fioravanti. The Terex luffing jib line includes eight different model configurations with lift capacity classes ranging from 11 to 72.5 tons (10 to 66 t) and maximum jib lengths from 164 to 246.1 ft. (50 to 75 m). Offering a working range of 15 to 85 degrees, Terex luffing jib cranes increase flexibility by giving the lifting crew a number of different working radii,

while conserving space on the job. With the City Centre project requiring so many crane configurations, it’s inevitable that interference would be a concern. “There are as many as five interfering cranes working together in certain areas of the project,” said Fioravanti, “so we used Terex flat top cranes for this part of the project.” Flat top tower cranes are constructed without the “tops” of conventional cranes and offer lift capacities reaching 44.1 tons (40 t). “Terex flat top cranes are designed specifically for jobs like City Centre,” said Ruedi Van Coppenolle, Terex sales manager, tower cranes, “where space is confined or when working near airports.” Maxim Crane is using the Terex CTT561/A-20 model on this particular project, which gave them a maximum jib length of 275.6 ft. (84 m). Where space is not a concern and the need for lifting speed and power were required, Maxim Crane selected the hammerhead crane design. Providing a jib length reaching up to 262.5 ft. (80 m), Terex hammerhead cranes are designed specifically for heavy lifting and placement duties on challenging jobsites like City Centre. “Our SK series includes cranes with maximum lift capacities ranging from 22 to 35.3 tons,” said Van Coppenolle. “We selected the hammerhead models for speed and capacity, and our customers and operators alike appreciate the speed and reliability of all the Terex tower cranes in use on the project,” Hyden said. With the project positioned near the Atlantic Ocean coastline and constructed over 3.5-year period, Americaribe/Moriarty JV and Maxim Crane leaders had to account for and establish safety procedures in case
Mixed-Use Cranes Final lift plans require 11 tower cranes for the project, all of them Terex. The strategy employed a mix of Terex hammerhead, flat top and luffing jib designs to safely handle all of the lifting needs at City Centre. “Maxim Crane and Terex Crane’s history in the market and reputation for reliability and service are critical in the crane selection for the project,” said Hyden. “Due to the confined space and adjacent structures, we have specific needs where the different tower crane designs are required to meet the needs of the project, all of which are able to be met by Terex Cranes.” With a project like City Centre, tower cranes fill a crucial role in the construction of the high-rise structures, as they provide the majority of the hoisting. Everything from tools, concrete form work and rebar to structural steel, equipment and concrete are lifted by the cranes. Careful planning is required up front to make certain that every square inch of the project site is covered by a tower crane for construction crews. “We have up to 700 feet under hook height and up to 244 feet hook 20

maximum freestanding crane height of 140 feet while still meeting Florida’s 146 mph wind-load standard.” More than two-thirds of the way through City Centre’s construction cycle, Maxim Crane’s crew and 11 tower cranes are efficiently helping to construct the site’s structures. “The cranes will be on site for 16 to 24 months per crane,” said Fioravanti. “They are working, and we are not hearing anything back from the job site. No news is good news once the cranes are put to work.” For more information, visit www.terex.com. of hurricanes making landfall. “Terex provided application engineering assistance to help develop climb sequences, tie-off points and initial freestanding configurations suitable to this job to meet hurricane wind-load ratings,” said Hyden. Terex transfer masts help Maxim Crane meet the stringent wind-load ratings and gain more flexibility with regard to the initial freestanding crane configurations. The transfer mast also allowed crews to more efficiently use tower crane segments between the different tower designs. “The transfer masts allow any tower crane segment to be used with the hammerhead, flat top or luffing jib crane design, regardless of what model the segment was built for,” said Van Coppenolle. “Crews can mix standard upper segments with heavy duty lower segments to deliver a 21

Manitou Provides Minn.’s Red Bull Crashed Ice Season Its Wings The capital of Minnesota kicked off the Red Bull Crashed Ice season on the frozen banks of the Mississippi River on January 24. American aces have been racing for a few years in the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship, but they were hoping that hard training in the off-season and a ferocious dedication to the sport would pay off in Saint Paul at the inaugural event of the season. With local hero Cameron Naasz, a native of Minnesota, having pushed the boundaries of the sport and almost clinched the title in 2014, and the likes of Canadian Scott Croxall and the defending champion, Marco Dallago, of Austria, lacing up for action, it promised to be another year of fierce competition. For the past three winters, Saint Paul has hosted the ice cross downhill competition, with a huge crowd of more than 100,000 people converging under the gaze of the imposing Cathedral of Saint Paul. Crowds have witnessed the high-speed action that features skaters competing in four-man heats in a race to the bottom of a long ice track full of obstacles. The sport appeals to what many Americans like most in sports — a physically challenging, rough, tough sport coupled with high-speed action and agility. Americans have done surprisingly well as neophytes in their first few years in the 15-year-old sport, despite having far less experience than established nations like Canada, Finland, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The 2015 track began in front of the Cathedral of Saint Paul with the riders propelled over a bridge. Their skills were put to the test, as the skaters needed to build momentum to face the obstacles, the last banked corner and the final sprint to the finish line. Hangman Productions out of Vancouver, BC, Canada erected the track. Created in 2001 by a group of friends focused primarily on the conceptualization, development and execution of professional action sports events, Red Bulls Sponsored Crashed Ice was the perfect event. Hangman Productions needed a crane to fit all of its special requirements. Hayden-Murphy out of Bloomington, Minn., rents a wide range of equipment from Manitou heavy telescopic handlers, Manitou rotating telescopic handlers, 85 to 710-ton (77 to 644 t) Manitowoc crawler cranes, 30 to 150-ton (27 to 136 t) Grove rough terrain cranes, 45 to 120 ton (40.8 to 108 t) Mantis hydraulic telescopic cranes, 15 to 25-ton (13 to 22 t) Grove carry deck cranes, Link-Belt hydraulic excavators, Allied hydraulic hammers, Wirtgen mills and reclaimers, Hamm compaction rollers (smooth drum, pad drum, pneumatic and double drum rollers), Kleemann crusher and screens, Doppstadt grinders, shreaders and trommel screens. Hangman Productions requested the Manitou 2540P rotating telescopic handler with 8800-lb. (3,992 kg) lifting capacity. “The Manitou worked great for our purpose here, which was the top tower for a cable camera used to film the RedBull Crashed Ice event in Saint Paul, Minn. We needed to use this particular machine for the small size it is and the maximum height reach to avoid obstacles down hill from this position. After using the particular Manitou, I will most defiantly source this machine for future jobs and uses. Judi Palmstein at Hayden-Murphy was great to work with,” said Jason Shields, event site coordinator of Hangman Productions, Vancouver, BC, Canada. Maeda MC405 — Perfect Fit for TAMU required. These jobs include several high-profile projects such as Soldier Field, Chicago, Ill., Miami Marlins Stadium, Miami, Fla., and Daytona Speedway, Daytona, Fla. Students, professors and alumni of Texas A&M University will soon enjoy upgrades to TAMU stadium at Kyle Field thanks to the hard work of Sign Pro, a Texas-based contractor. The challenge facing Sign Pro involved erecting a large sign inside of the already completed entranceway of the new stadium without damaging the preexisting flatwork and concrete surfaces. Due to its compact footprint, Sign Pro chose a rubber-tracked Maeda MC405 mini-crane for the job. At 4 ft. 6 in. wide and 6 ft. 6 in. tall in travel configuration, the MC405 was able to travel easily through the stadium gates with inches to spare. Once inside the work area, the outriggers were easily deployed in a matter of minutes. The operator of the MC405 lifted the sign frame weighing approximately 1000 lbs. with ease over the existing stair and escalator area. A crew member in a manlift was able to bolt up the frame piece on each end making fine adjustments vertically by the MC405, and re-position the load. All of this was made possible with the MC405’s fine hoisting control and smooth operation. Upon completion, the MC405 was folded up in travel configuration and traveled back out through the entrance gates. Sign Pro completed installation safely and efficiently in minimal time with minimal labor due to the MC405.
