Potain Tower Cranes Complete Chishi Grand Bridge in China “We have worked with Potain since 2002 and have an excellent relationship with them — we appreciate both their high quality products and their attentive service,” he said. “The advanced technology, excellent efficiency and reliable operation of Potain cranes give us the peace of mind that you need on this type of large-scale project. We cannot have delays as it would have a major impact on the rest of the project. We spent considerable time analyzing the correct crane choice for this project before selecting Potain, and once again they have proven to be the best choice.” Standing up to 1,017 ft. (310 m) tall, the six Potain tower cranes endured the full force of Hunan’s subtropical climate during their 30month posting at the Chishi Grand Bridge. Monsoon rain and extreme

Six Potain tower cranes have built two 918.6 ft. (280 m) tall bridge pylons high in the clouds above the mountains of southern China. The cranes spent two-and-a-half years building the pylons at the Chishi Grand Bridge, which will span 4,822.8 ft. (1,470 m) and carry its road deck 590.5 ft. (180 m) above the ground. The bridge will open at the end of this year. The China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group (CRMBEC) is the main contractor on the project, which at 229.7 ft. (70 m) wide, will be one of the widest cable-stayed bridges in the world. CRMBEC owns and operates the Potain tower cranes used on the project and the company has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Manitowoc, as Jiang Xiong, CRMBEC project manager, explains.

humidity were among the challenges at the job site. Communication between ground crews and operators also was key as the cranes were often hidden in the clouds, with no view of the ground below. The Potain cranes built two of the bridge’s four pylons, each of which has 24 exterior sides and 36 interior sides, forming a unique S-shape structure. This technical arrangement made construction all the more complicated. To ensure the cranes operated at maximum efficiency for the long hours required at the project, Manitowoc Crane Care worked closely with the site. At one stage, the customer support division even needed to deliver some components and parts to the job site by helicopter, to ensure the project stayed on schedule. The cranes lifted a wide variety of construction materials, including formwork and steel structures, in loads that tested their maximum capacities, which ranged up to 17.6 tons (16 t). Work began on the Chishi Grand Bridge in March 2010. The Potain tower cranes were erected at the job site in March 2011 and have recently finished work. The cranes on site included two MC 200s and two cranes that mix the mast of an MC 480 with the jib of an MC 320 K16. All of the cranes were built at Potain’s factory in Zhangjiagang, China. Chunjo Construction Purchases 50 Grove RT770Es at ConExpo 2014

(L-R): Dave Hull, Manitowoc Cranes; Larry Weyers, Manitowoc Cranes; Jang Hwan Chang, Chunjo Construction Co.; JS Park, Manitowoc Cranes; and John Stewart, Manitowoc Cranes, celebrate Chunjo’s purchase of 50 Grove RT770Es at ConExpo 2014.

Seven of the Grove RT770Es were delivered to Chunjo in April 2014, with the remaining 43 units arriving over the course of the year. Launched at ConExpo 2014, the Grove RT770E offers a five-section, full-power boom that features single-cylinder technology, eliminating the need for a hydraulic hose reel, lightening the boom and the entire crane. The design also eliminates the need to install boom inserts, which requires an assist crane, saving both time and money. The crane’s boom telescoping system offers “A” and “B” mode selections that maximize load chart capacities in both the structural and stability section of the load chart. This enables the operator to easily choose the mode that best fits the lift. It has a compact 26 x 10.9 ft. (8 x 3.33 m) chassis that enables it to be more easily transported. The Grove RT770E can be fitted with a 33 x 56 ft. (10.1 to 17.1 m) bi-fold swingaway that combines with the main boom to reach 193.8 ft. (59.1 m) and extend working radius to 144 ft. (43.9 m). Consistent with Grove’s efforts to standardize crane lines, the RT770E has the same carrier, controls, LMI, valves and counterweight as the RT765E-2. It also shares the full vision cab. This streamlines maintenance for companies with more than one Grove rough-terrain crane. For more information visit www.manitowoc.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Manitowoc has received a substantial order for its new Grove RT770E rough-terrain crane, from Chunjo Construction Co., signing a deal for 50 units when company representatives attended the ConExpo show in Las Vegas, Nev. The 72-ton (65 t) capacity rough-terrain crane, which offers a boom of 137 ft. (42 m), debuted at the show to positive feedback from visitors. South Korea-based Chunjo placed the sizable order of Grove RT770Es to update its current fleet of 68 Grove RT cranes, which it purchased in 2006 and 2007. The cranes will be used on a range of engineering and construction projects by Chunjo customers. And as the jobs will be both in South Korea and elsewhere around the world, the international reputation of Grove RT cranes will make them easy to fit on to any job site, according to Jang Hwan Chang, president of Chunjo. “The Grove RT770E is a new market leader and its versatility make it perfect for many jobs,” he said. “Updating our fleet with the latest crane models reduces maintenance costs, fuel costs and down time, so we can offer very competitive rental rates and win more contracts. We have already sold 50 older Grove cranes from our fleet and we had no problems selling them, because they are robust units that offer exceptional residual value. You can visit almost any job site in the world and there will be people on site familiar with working with Grove RT cranes, and that is very valuable for our clients. We are delighted to add such a large number of cranes to our fleet, and we are confident they will provide many years of great service.” 14

ALL Sunshine Helps Revive Citrus Bowl In early 2014, during a cold and rainy opening ceremony, the assembled team of contractors tasked with dismantling the 78-year-old Florida Citrus Bowl stood soberly and watched as a crane lifted away the stadium’s scoreboard. Opened in 1936 as a public works project under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration, the Citrus Bowl had aged considerably in this touristfriendly and, by most measures, modern city of Orlando. Now it is receiving $200 million in renovations that include the removal of a suspended walkway, in which ALL Sunshine Crane Rental Corp., a member of the ALL Family of Companies, played a major role. ALL Sunshine was hired by Abatement Central, a subcontractor for Independence Demolition of Independence, Ohio. ALL Sunshine and Independence worked directly together to remove the 43-ft. long (13.1 m), 23,000-lb. (10,432.6 kg) suspended walkway positioned in the center of post-tensioned concrete supports, which had to remain undamaged. In addition, numerous 45-ft. (13.7 m), 30,000-lb. (13,607.7 kg) precast panels from the outside of the upper section of the stadium were to be lifted down and replaced. ALL Sunshine moved in with a 100-ton (90.7 t) Liebherr LTM 1100-4.2 all-terrain

crane, chosen for its compact design and maneuverability in tight spots. The LTM 11004.2 features top capacities in the 4-axle mobile crane class. Unfortunately, to remove the walkway, the crane faced an opening only 29 by 31 ft. (8.8 by 9.4 m) Due to the difficulty of the lift, Dave Hall, project coordinator of ALL Sunshine, used ALL’s 3D Lift Plan software to help plan the job. 3D Lift Plan calculated that the walkway could be removed with the crane’s telescoping boom operating at 74.2 ft. (22.6 m) with 37,900 lbs. (17,191 kg) of counterweight, enabling the crane to handle a 15,000-lb. (6,803 kg) load at only 60 percent of its capacity. The sling tension was 11,698 lbs. (5,306 kg). Because the walkway could not be lowered without potential damage to the concrete supports, it was rigged with custom cables for slinging. Then slow, careful swinging and telescoping enabled the removal of the walkway. For taking down the precast panels, 3D Lift Plan demonstrated that the telescopic boom needed to extend 110.9 ft. (33.8 m), with the same 37,900-lb. (17,191 kg) counterweight as for the walkway, operating at merely 61 percent of capacity. Due to the precise lift plan, the right equip15

ment and the crane operator’s skill, ALL was able to tackle a seemingly impossible job. “The operator did a flawless job,” said Hall. “This was a very tough job, but he did us proud. I’m glad we were able to perform so well on a project that means a lot to the city.” The Liebherr LTM 1100-4.2, with both the power and flexibility to handle both jobs, saved time and allowed the general contractor to move on to the next task. “It was just such a tight space,” said John Carroll of Independence Demolition. “We ran through a few different scenarios, and then we came up with an idea we thought would work. The 3D Lift Plan showed us it could be done. The operator from ALL Sunshine brought that walkway out beautifully. People said we couldn’t succeed, but we did.” The reconstructed 65,000-seat Citrus Bowl will feature a rebuilt lower bowl, a new digital video scoreboard, more specialized seating options, and a 10,000-sq.-ft. (929 sq m) “party deck.” The city hopes to host a future Super Bowl once the renovations are complete. Wells Concrete Completes Portion of Mullins Cheese Plant in Knowlton

Stainless steel installation and the precast installation utilized the same crane, a Manitowoc 14000 supplied by Hayden-Murphy Equipment Company, which added to the coordination effort.

Wells Concrete crews have completed their portion of work on an addition to Mullins Cheese plant in Knowlton, Wis. Already the largest family owned and operated cheese factory in Wisconsin, according to the company Web site, the new addition is set to further expand the company. Precast installation began last July and the field services crew stayed on schedule, sometimes working beyond a normal workweek, to complete the job in January. Included in precast construction were 1,213 concrete pieces that were hauled to the job site and installed. Although the project was no more challenging for the field crew than any other project, certain obstacles needed to be overcome including sequencing the product with the overall project schedule to avoid additional mobilization costs. Stainless steel installation and the precast installation utilized the same crane, a Manitowoc 14000 supplied by Hayden-Murphy Equipment Company, which added to the coordination effort. There also Ingo Noeske were multiple rigging scenarios Manitowoc for both the stainless steel and precast in coordinating around tanks and equipment. In addition, crews installed precast up to 100 ft. (30.5 m) in the air during winter weather conditions. Each level of structure required crews to leave panels out for access and installed later. The Manitowoc 14000, a 220-ton (199 t) capacity crawler crane with 292 ft. (89 m) of boom, was essential during the project. A 170 ft. (51.8 m) luffing jib, along with a 60 ft. (18 m) fixed jib, allows a total combination of 424 ft. (129 m) for added reach. It features the EPIC control system and CAN-bus technology, and utilizes the FACT connection system for easy set-up. “The Manitowoc 14000 is one of our most trust-worthy and site-tested crawler cranes, and it has appeared on job sites all over the globe,” said Ingo Noeske, global product director of Manitowoc lattice-boom crawler cranes. “It falls right in the middle size of our crawler crane lineup, offering customers strong reach and capacity, but with a compact footprint for maneuverability on the job site.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)CQ

Sims Crane Helps Raise $11,000 for Construction Angels Sims Crane & Equipment Co. helped to raise $11,000 after expenses at the inaugural fundraiser for the Tampa Bay Chapter of Construction Angels, a 501(c)(3) statewide non-profit that helps with financial support for families of constructionindustry employees killed on the job. Qualifying families can receive cash grants of $2,500 to offset immediate expenses after the death of a loved one on a construction site. “Sims Crane was just amazing in the way they put together the fundraiser and attracted more than 100 people to help make it a success,” said Kristi Ronyak, president and founder of Construction Angels. “Having a net donation of $11,000 will make a huge difference for the better

in the lives of families who have suffered the ultimate loss. We can’t thank them enough.” When Dean Sims II, vice president of marketing of Sims Crane, learned fatalities on construction jobs in Florida increased from 41 in 2011 to 55 in 2012 — a 26 percent jump, he knew he had to do something. He founded the Tampa Bay chapter of Construction Angels, which originally began in Broward County. “With all of the industry’s dedication to safety education and safety on the job, the fact that onsite deaths in the construction industry are on the rise is of major concern to everyone involved,” said Sims. “And the reality is, in most cases, the families of loved ones killed on the job need all the

financial help they can get. That’s where Construction Angels comes in.” The fundraiser, hosted by Sims Crane and open to the public, was held at Keel & Curley Winery in Plant City. Complete with live music, silent auction, spirited live auction, raffle, commemorative photos, barbecue and locally grown and distilled strawberry and blueberry wine. Ken Mulryan Wins Engineer of the Year Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental Inc. of Wisconsin, a member of the ALL Family of Companies, announced that operator Ken Mulryan has been appointed engineer of the year by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 139, District D. Mulryan works out of Dawes’ Milwaukee branch. Mulryan first joined the Local 139 in 1986 when starting out as a crane operator and, over time, has become known for his mentoring activities. According to Dave Backman, who heads the communications department of the Local 139, “Ken is highly regarded among the union’s rank and file as someone who will always help younger members learn the craft of proper crane operation in order to advance their careers. He regularly answers questions about the work they do and the equipment they operate.” “I’m honored and flattered by the whole deal,” Mulryan said. “A lot of guys probably deserve it more than me.” Modesty aside, Mulryan has loved his career as a crane operator. “I’ve been in the business for 28 years,” he noted. “I really enjoy my work, and I try to share that enthusiasm with members who are just starting out. They need to take their time and get it right the first time. It’s a worthwhile challenge.” The engineer of the year honor is bestowed annually to exemplary members whose conduct and involvement in Local 139 and the communities in which they live define what it means to be a “good union member.” Their peers within the union award members this distinction. The union’s leadership then salutes them with a personalized plaque presented before the membership at an official union function. Their names are subsequently added to permanent honor roll wall hangings throughout the various district halls. Dual Grove GMK7550s Lift Historic Relics for Smithsonian Museum The nation’s capital is home to the world’s largest museum and research complex — The Smithsonian Institution. Made up of nearly 20 separate museums and nine research centers, the organization houses some of the country’s most prized artifacts, including priceless works of arts and dinosaur bones. It’s safe to say that any time the Smithsonian calls for something to be lifted, it requires the utmost in precision planning and flawless execution. W. O. Grubb was recently contacted for such a project. Tasked with a complex lift for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture, the company chose two Grove GMK7550s for a dual lift to ensure the project was completed with the best tools for the job. The lifts took place immediately adjacent to the National Mall. The first lift was to place a nearly 50-ton (45.3 t) railway car that was so large, it had to be put in place before construction of the museum could be completed around it. The lift took place on Constitution Avenue, next to the National Mall and in view of the Washington Monument. The road was closed and the two Grove cranes moved in to set the shrink-wrapped railway car into a 60-ft. (18 m) deep construction pit. The two cranes were on opposite sides of the 80 ft. (24 m) railway car, which was rigged with two straps on each side with 10 ft. (3 m) spreader beams. The straps were connected to beams underneath the car to avoid damage from hooking to it directly. It was then lowered in place to the sound of applause from onlookers. The GMK7550 is Grove’s largest allterrain crane. It can lift up to 550 tons (498 t) and has a 197 ft. (60 m) Megaform boom. The crane features Megatrak suspension on a seven-axle carrier, a removable rear outrigger box, an Allison automatic transmission and a Twin-Lock boom pinning system. When rigged with an 82 ft. inserts, the crane can achieve a maximum tip height of 430 ft. (131 m). Stephen Dieren, project manager of W. O. Grubb, said the project was unique and required an equally unique setup. “A key challenge of the project was getting the ground bearing pressures correct for the two Grove all-terrain cranes,” Dieren said. “They were both set approximately 60 feet from the construction pit to achieve the optimum pressures.” As they lifted the railway car, the two Grove cranes performed like mirror images of each other, a testament to the careful planning and execution of a lift that could not go wrong under any circumstance. The second lift involved placing a guard tower into the pit that was used in the 1930s at Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, which was known as one of the worst in the country. A 17.5 ton (15.8 m) concrete tower and corrugated steel roof made up the tower that was lifted into the pit by a single Grove GMK7550. 20

“Months of planning and days of prep work were put in to execute this job,” Dieren said. “Everything went beautifully.” W.O. Grubb Crane Rental is based in Richmond, Va., and is one of the premier providers of crane rentals, rigging, heavy hauling, major projects and steel erection in the Mid-Atlantic region. The company is family owned and operated, and has multiple locations in Virginia, Maryland and other surrounding states. In 2013, the company added several new Manitowoc-made cranes to its fleet, including two 300 ton (272 t) Manitowoc 2250 crawler cranes, a 165 ton (149 t) Grove GMK 5165 all-terrain crane and a couple of 60 ton (54 t) Grove TMS760E truck cranes, among others. “Grove Cranes are fine pieces of machinery and have strong lift charts,” Dieren said. Terex Cranes Launches New CTL 1600 Terex Cranes announced the introduction of its new CTL 1600 luffing jib tower crane. It has two and a half times the load moment and a 32.8 ft. (10 m) longer jib than the previous largest Terex luffing jib tower crane. The new CTL 1600 tower crane will be produced at the Terex facility in Fontanafredda, Italy. “We have decades of experience in luffing jib cranes. To create the CTL 1600 tower crane, we tapped into all we knew about them and went a step further,” said Marco Gentilini, vice president and general manager of Terex Tower Cranes. “Terex luffing jib tower cranes are known to be great performers while at the same time offering a great return on investment because of their cost saving features in erection and transport. When designing this massive crane, our engineers not only maintained this concept but also developed several innovations.” Topping the existing Terex tower crane portfolio of eight CTL luffing jib models, the new extra-large Terex CTL 1600 crane integrates extensive feedback from customers to combine outstanding lifting power with easy assembly, operator comfort and job site safety. Offering a maximum lifting capacity of 72 tons (66 t), a maximum load moment of 1600 meter tonnes and equipped with an extra-long 246 ft. (75 m) jib, this crane offers high lifting capacities and reach as well as ease of transport and assembly. This new tower crane model has a maximum freestanding height of 291.9 ft. (89 m) on a concrete base and 288.7 ft. (88 m) on a chassis. The CTL 1600 tower crane uses HD 33 tower segments, which come equipped with pre-assembled tower platforms, aluminum ladders, multiple lifting points and the new “Engage System”. This new system includes all the required components for tower crane assembly already positioned and ready to be connected. The combination of the HD 33 tower system and a broad variety of internal and external climbing options provides the CTL 1600 tower crane job site versatility. Besides being the largest and heaviest lifting model in the Terex luffing jib tower crane range, the new Terex CTL 1600 boasts several innovative features focused on increased performance, easier crane assembly and safety. Standard safety features include jib walkways and handrails to provide a safe working environment for technicians during set-up and maintenance when working at height. As for all Terex luffing jib tower cranes, all hoisting and luffing winch drums are linked to their own separate emergency braking system, which at the press of a button stops operation rapidly but gradually enough to avoid blocking. An optional anti-collision system helps the operator to plan and execute lifts while avoiding collisions with other cranes or buildings. Two cameras and a display screen increase visibility and enable the operator to zoom in and out as required. Cost-efficiency is improved due to a folding platform and folding Aframe, which can be carried in one piece on a single standard truck to reduce transportation costs. An automatic slewing ring lubrication feature also means less time spent on maintenance. Additionally, a third hoist on the counter jib can be conveniently used as a service derrick for assembly. The new CTL 1600 tower crane also is equipped with one or two pull lines to combine the ability of heavy lifting with fast lifting speeds.

Terex Cranes announced the introduction of its new CTL 1600 luffing jib tower crane.

Providing ergonomics and comfort to help crane operators work safely and stay focused for long hours on the jobsite, the new CTL 1600 crane comes equipped with the Terex Cranes’s EVO 15 operator cab. Built with feedback from users, the EVO 15 cab features five large windows for increased visibility. For ventilation, its front window and back door open. Sliding sunscreen blinds are available for side, front and upper windows. Two large windshield wipers help keep a clear view at all times. An all stainless-steel electronics panel is located in the cabin platform providing protection from different weather conditions. An adjustable ergonomic operator seat provides the comfort while a new ergonomic joystick control helps maneuver loads more easily with great precision. A full color, anti-glare, multi-language display screen provides data feedback including load, wind speed, height, alarm history and online trouble shooting to maneuver and lift precisely and safely. “I am very proud of the engineering team. It doesn’t happen every day that you launch a crane that more than doubles the capacity of the previous range topping model while maintaining the same ‘easy to transport and erect’ concept,” said Gentilini. Manitowoc MLC650 Crawler Crane Successfully Completes Load Test The Manitowoc MLC650 crawler crane has successfully completed the required load test to validate its maximum lifting capacity. The crane lifted 717 tons (650 t) of test weights, making the crane’s advertised capacity official. Dustin Soerens, marketing manager of lattice cranes at Manitowoc, said the test went as expected. “The lift went very smoothly. It was a momentous occasion for everyone at Manitowoc that has worked so hard to make this crane a reality,” Soerens said. “A large group of engineers witnessed the test lift and were very pleased with how the crane performed under load.” The MLC650 is on schedule and working perfectly, which means it’s only a matter of time before the crane is ready for the global market. It has a 341 ft. (104 m) maximum main boom length and a luffing jib that can be added to reach a maximum combination of 515 ft. (157 m). “This crane also features the innovative Variable Position Counterweight [VPC] technology, which worked perfectly to position the counterweight for each of the load scenarios,” Soerens said. The VPC system automatically positions the counterweight to fit the required lift. Advantages for customers include reduced ground preparation, lower ground-bearing pressure and less counterweight, all without sacrificing capacity. Also, customers will not have to buy, transport or install as much counterweight compared with a traditional configuration. “We performed a max load test, a max moment test and a variety of lifts utilizing different positions of the VPC, and they all were completed flawlessly,” Soerens said. The crane was fitted with hundreds of strain gauges that measured the tension and compression of the steel components of the crane while lifting. For the max load moment test, the crane was positioned to apply the maximum stresses through the structure, such as the boom positioned over the corner of the crawler crane. “The successful completion of the max loading tests is a positive sign that the rest of the structural testing will go smoothly,” Soerens said. “Typically, if any major design changes would be required, they’re found during the max load test. We can now rest assured that we’re well on our way to releasing this innovative crane to the global market.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Boom Booster Kit for Terex CC 8800-1 Crawler Cranes Works With Steep, Long Configurations The new Terex Boom Booster kit for the Terex CC 8800-1 crawler crane boosts performance to new heights particularly when working with steep and long boom configurations. The kit is used for heavy lifting applications with long-boom configurations such as petrochemical, wind turbine erection and power plant installation. The new Boom Booster increases the CC 8800-1 crane’s lift capacity by up to 90 percent. The Terex Boom Booster is available with new crane purchases or is easily retrofitted to existing models. The available Boom Booster kit offers up to 236 ft. (72 m) of lift-enhancing boom structure for the CC 8800-1 crawler crane. The wedge-shaped, 36 ft. (11 m) long lower and upper adapters flare out to a 32.8-ft. (10 m) width, nearly three times the standard 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) boom width, to enhance the system’s structural integrity. Five 32.8-ft. long intermediate segments offer the ability to meet up to 164-ft. (50 m) length needs. Designed for quick, cost-effective transportation, the new Terex Boom Booster can be disassembled and shipped in standard 40-ft. (12.2 m) open-top containers. In markets that limit container gross weight to 30.9 tons (28 t), each intermediate section fits into one container, while the upper/lower adapters ship in two containers, for a total of nine truckloads to transport the entire 236 ft. (72 m) boom length. Where up to 44.1-ton (40 t) containers can be used, only seven truckloads are required to transport the full Boom Booster kit to a job site. “This new Terex boom configuration option will give a big boost to the customers’ results in the field,” said Guntram R. Jakobs, manager product marketing, Terex Cranes. The Terex Boom Booster kit features a pin connection design that eliminates bolts and facilitates faster and simpler boom assembly in the field. Boom sections can be shipped to the job site partially assembled to further advance assembly speed. Both intermediate and adapter sections incorporate the Terex Fall Protection System and walkway to enhance safety when working at height during assembly. For more information, visit www.terex.com. “The MLC650 and MLC300 will be game changers in the crawler crane market.” Joe Vaccarello, MAXIM Crane Works

“The VPC technology is going to set a new standard in Ground Bearing Pressure standards and expectations.” Paul Belcher, Mountain Crane Service

“The VPC technology reduces ground prep, which is an immediate savings for our customers.” Rick Mikut, ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp.

MLC300 / MLC650

The market has spoken. With the exclusive Variable Position Counterweight (VPC) technology, the new MLC ( USt) and MLC ( USt) provide unique efficiencies and savings other crawler cranes simply cannot. ř The VPC system is easy to operate because it automatically positions the counterweight to fit the required lift ř Ideal for energy-related and infrastructure projects, barge work and wind turbine installation ř VPC-MAX attachment counterweight never touches the ground — reducing ground preparation area and ground bearing pressure by eliminating the need for a wheeled attachment
