Sarens Enlists Two Terex AC 700 Cranes for Heavy Tandem Lift “We calculated a week’s time savings by using the two Terex all-terrain cranes, which represented significant labor and cost savings for our customer,” explained Van der Elst. This is critical for the construction of an oil module in a depressed oil price market.
International steel construction company, Iemants, constructed an offshore oil module for Fabricom at the company’s Hoboken facility in Antwerp, Belgium. These massive modules, critical for the oil and gas production process, range in sizes reaching 82 ft. (25 m) high, 98 ft. (30 m) wide and 131 ft. (40 m) long and weigh up to 2,425 tons (2,200 t). Even with a full complement of equipment at Iemants’ disposal, occasionally during module construction it is necessary to bring in heavy lifting specialists to safely pick especially heavy pieces and place them onto the module platform. When the time came to lift and mount on top of the module a large spreader bar used to perform offshore lifting, Iemants worked with its lifting partner, The Sarens Group, to develop the most cost-effective and efficient lifting solution.
Tandem Savings Sarens mobilized its first Terex AC 700 crane from its Wolvertem, Belgium, headquarters, plus eight trailers of supporting material, jib segments and counterweight to make the 17 mi. (27 km) trip to the Hoboken job site. The Terex crane reached highway speeds of 47 mph (75 km/h) to get from the yard to the project, and, once on site, its 8-axle steering allowed the crane to maneuver into position for lifting. Within a day, Sarens’ four-person work crew transported the first all terrain crane to the job site, rigged it with 176 tons (160 t) of counterweight and the 98 ft. luffing fly jib, and had it ready for the lifting project. On day two, the crane went to work lifting and positioning supporting equipment in preparation for placement of the spreader bar. “The first crane on site placed the lifting supports, rigging for the platform and a radar mast,” said Van der Elst. “At the same time, we moved our second crane to the job site and had a different four-person crew prepare and position that AC 700 for the spreader bar lift.” The morning of day three both cranes were in position for completing the critical lift. To avoid the potential of weight overload on one of the cranes, Sarens’ lift plan included positioning a 176-ton capacity swivel beam in between the spreader bar and cranes’ hook blocks. “This provided perfect weight distribution of the load between the two cranes,” said Van der Elst. To start the spreader bar lift, the two crane booms worked at a 72 ft. (22 m) radius, and, as the lift progressed, the boom radius decreased to 56 ft. (17 m) as the two cranes swiveled the load into position. While placing the spreader bar atop the module, both cranes were operating at a 79-ft. (24 m) radius, and the two booms were less than a couple of meters apart. “The responsive controls of the AC 700 cranes give our operators very precise movements of the boom and load, which allows us to confidently complete intricate tandem lifts like this,” said Van der Elst. With the lift complete, both four-person crews derigged their respective AC 700 cranes, and the lifting equipment convoy traveled back to Sarens’ Wolvertem yard. In just three days, the dual crane option safely and efficiently placed the spreader bar plus supporting equipment onto the oil module, seven days faster than what was estimated for the single crane option. More importantly, going with a tandem approach saved Sarens’ customer money, according to the company. For more information, visit http://www.sarens.com and www.terex.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
The Right Cranes The spreader bar measured 44 ft. (13.5 m) long, 16 ft. (5 m) wide and 20 ft. (6 m) high and weighed 160 tons (145 t). It had to be lifted from ground level to a placement height of 105 ft. (32 m) and the crane would have to work at a maximum 79 ft. (24 m) radius during the lift. “We considered a number of options from using a single crawler crane to performing a tandem lift using two all terrain cranes,” said Erik Van der Elst, key account manager of Sarens. The advantage of the single crane option would have been that it required only one crane and crew to be mobilized. However, a crawler crane would require multiple days and more than 20 loads to transport the crane components necessary to configure it to meet 160-ton lift capacity at a 79-ft. radius. “It would need at least 10 days to complete the entire project from mobilization to completing the lift with the single crane option,” said Van der Elst. This was too long and costly for the module lift project. Sarens’ project managers focused on a more efficient, dual crane option, using the 772-ton (700 t) capacity class Terex AC 700 all-terrain crane. To meet required lifting capacity and working radius, while minimizing loads to improve mobilization efficiency, planners went with a 67 ft. (20.5 m) main boom option, using a 13 ft. (4 m) variable adapter to connect the 98 ft. (30 m) luffing fly jib to the telescopic boom. “In this configuration, each AC 700 crane offers 95-ton capacity at the 79-foot radius, ample capacity to safely lift the 160-ton spreader bar,” said Michael Klein, product marketing manager of Terex and Demag All Terrain Cranes. Even though this option required two cranes to be mobilized, it offered significant time and money savings, according to the company. The nine-axle AC 700 all-terrain crane was driven to the job site with its complete 197 ft. (60 m) main telescoping boom installed, while meeting 13 tons (12 t) per-axle load limits to reduce the number of loads required for transport. Even using the two cranes, this option would cut the number of loads approximately in half compared to mobilizing a crawler crane. 12
To avoid the potential of weight overload on one of the cranes, Sarens’ lift plan included positioning a 176-ton (160 t) capacity swivel beam in between the spreader bar and the cranes’ hook blocks.

ALL Expands Service Capabilities, Size of Its Wis., W Va. Facilities (Minnesota). A seven-month expansion project added an impressive 14,400 sq. ft. (1,337.8 sq m) onto the Elk Mound facility, including three drivethrough service bays: two to repair cranes and other lift equipment, and one a dedicated wash bay. The new service bays facilitate quicker turnaround on maintenance and repair jobs, which means shorter downtime for customers. The expansion also included conference/classroom space, which will become a training venue for employees and customers. “Our equipment is very much in demand in this area, so any downtime has an impact on our customers’ timelines and budgets,” said Mike School, Elk Mound branch manager. “The additional space has greatly enhanced our service efficiency and processes.” For more information, call 715/879-4800.
The ALL Family of Companies has increased both the size and service capabilities of its facilities in Elk Mound, Wis., and Nitro, W.Va. ALL Crane & Equipment Rental Corp. of Nitro, W.Va., offers heavyhaul trucking services and also functions as one of ALL’s major rebuild centers. The Nitro branch also specializes in repairing and maintaining ALL’s large fleet of crawler cranes — the biggest in North America. The Nitro facility acquired approximately 5-1/2 acres of land a mile away from its existing facility. The property includes five buildings that are being transformed to house a truck and trailer repair shop; a machine shop; a parts warehouse and office; a sandblasting and painting building; and a fabrication and welding shop. Work began last November and is expected to be completed this fall. “We’ll really be able to increase the level of service we provide as a result of this new space,” said Chad Shamblin, general manager at the Nitro location. “We can do complete rebuilds in-house now, and we’re adding staff to compensate for the increase in business. We are hiring skilled, experienced workers from the area who have become unemployed due to the decline in local mining jobs. So the expansion is a win for us, our customers and the region.” For more information, call 304/766-0300.

Maeda Works Hard on Lazy River at Mariott Marquis in Houston A new luxury hotel is coming to downtown Houston. Located next door to George R. Brown Convention Center, the $370 million Marriott Marquis Hotel will have 1,000 guest rooms, more than 104,00 sq. ft. (9,662 sq m) of meeting space, Houston’s largest ballroom, an infinity pool and a rooftop lazy river — shaped like the state of Texas. A specialty commercial pool contractor is using a Maeda MC305 crane to build the lazy river and outdoor pool area on sixth level overlooking Discovery Green. The MC305 is able to handle various materials such as steel beams and pumps to construct the large pool. The MC305 was selected for its capacity of 6,560 lbs. (2,975.5 kg);
overall weight of 9,100 lbs. (4,128 kg); small footprint; and ability to travel around a very confined workspace on rubber tracks. The MC305 was the solution for the contractor to have a light enough piece of equipment to work on the sixth level deck, with the capacity to handle various weights of steel beams and materials. The tower crane onsite was in the process of being taken down, since the main hotel structure was complete. Prior to the tower crane being removed, the MC305 was flown to the sixth level, where it will work for six months as the sole material-handling crane onsite. Precise placement and handling of materials is required on the congested job site. The MC305, rented from Inman Texas Company of Houston, Texas, is right at home on the central “island” structure in the shape of the state of Texas. The river structure is constructed around the perimeter of the “island”, so the MC305 can lift, place and hold materials while they are welded or bolted in place. Another key requirement of working on the project was having a crane that is fully compliant with the safety requirements of the general contractor. Maeda mini cranes have the same safety features, such as a moment limiter safety system and load display programmed with load charts; anti-2-block; outrigger interlock safety system; and other features similar to conventional larger mobile cranes. There are no issues with using a Maeda mini crane on a commercial job site, according to the manufacturer. The MC305 is a cost-effective solution that eliminated the need for an expensive big mobile crane, blocking the street below. For more information, call 713/715-1500 or visit www.maedausa.com. Contractor’s Growth Comes From Making Right ‘Moves’ for Customers Many businesses are willing to travel outside their territories for the right customers. Few would consider moving their entire operations, but Bennett Steel did just that about a year after Dave Bennett founded the company in 1980. Bennett Steel started in Okmulgee, Okla., but its largest customer was located near Tulsa. So, in 1981, the company moved to Sapulpa, Okla., to better accommodate what was at the time known as Liberty Glass Company. Three years later, Bennett Steel moved again, this time to its present location in Sapulpa. Today, Bennett Steel is a multi-pronged company that provides erection services, steel fabrication and crane rental.
“In the early days, our mainline offering was erection, but over the years we transitioned into about half our business being erection and fabrication with rental making up the balance,” recalled Bennett, president of the company. “We believe that diversity allows us to best serve our wide-ranging customer base, as well as help us react to changing market conditions.” In addition to Dave Bennett, the company’s key personnel includes Matt Bennett, vice president-production; Jack Pitcock, vice president of sales; Delbert Brown, shop superintendent; Floyd Duncan and Richard Williams, project managers; Carla January, drafting coordinator; Chris Wilson, crane superintendent; Harvey Swift, field operations manager; Max Glendenning, operator foreman; Randy Magee, Billy Rice and Pat Morgan, sales representatives; Tony Palmer, shop foreman; and Charlie Whitesell, field safety director. In total, the business employs nearly 200 people. About the same time that it moved to its current location, Bennett Steel opened a fabrication division, which has a 65,000-sq.-ft. (6,038 sq m) full-service shop. The fabrication division does work for Bennett Steel’s erection division and offers its services to outside customers as well. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has certified Bennett Steel as a fabricator. “Our shop takes projects from concept to a finished product,” Bennett explained. “We provide detailed drawings, fabricate beams, bolt or weld them together and deliver to them to any location the customer wants. We have ample space that allows us to handle practically any size job. Additionally, we have a group that fabricates form metal, such as stainless and aluminum handrails, and installs them. We also manufacture grates.” Strong Emphasis on Safety Bennett Steel is one of the largest erection service providers in the region and holds an advanced, certified-steel-erector credential from the AISC. The company also is recognized as a qualified erector by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Bennett Steel carries a large, diverse fleet of cranes for rent, with capacities from 8 to 400 tons (7.25 to 363 t). The crane-rental division works closely with customers to determine the right crane for their needs and offers lift plans. Rentals come with a certified crane operator. “Our crane rentals run the gamut. We offer everything from taxi service, where a mobile crane moves from job to job each day, to large, multi-day projects that require comprehensive rigging and lifting plans,” Bennett noted. “Having certified operators, riggers and signalmen ensures that our customers’ lifts are done safely and properly.” Bennett Steel strongly emphasizes safety, and its record is among the best in the industry. The company employs six safety professionals who audit job sites and the company’s fabrication shop to ensure proper safety practices are always in place and followed. That’s helped Bennett Steel gain and maintain a very low OSHA total recorded incident rate (TRIR). “We, and the companies we work with, take TRIR very seriously. In

backyard. With about 60 employees and five cranes, the company put up 1.3 million sq. ft. (1.2 million sq m) of roof and 950,000 sq. ft. (88,258 sq m) of mezzanine for a new Macy’s in Tulsa. This project also involved installing precast walls during a six-month period. Crews worked 47,000 man-hours on the Macy’s project with zero incidents and helped Bennett Steel earn a Project-of-the-Year award from the Association of General Contactors. “That’s the biggest project we’ve done to date, and we’re obviously proud of it,” said Bennett. “We take great pride in all our work. We approach each job as if it’s the most important one we have, no matter

fact, you can’t get on many of the companies’ sites if your TRIR is too high,” said Bennett. “More importantly, we make safety a priority because we value our employees. They are the backbone of the company. In fact, our employees built this company. I have fortunately pushed and pulled the right levers at the right time. Currently, we are bringing on new blood. Last year, we lost about 260 years of experience, but I have confidence in our staff to recruit and train quality people.” High-Profile Work Bennett Steel’s completed project list includes numerous high-profile jobs throughout the Midwest, but one of its biggest was right in its own

Our jobs run anywhere from an hour or two, all the way to months and sometimes years.” For another highly visible job, the company fabricated structural steel, handrails and stairs and erected them for Oneok Field in Tulsa, home of the Tulsa Drillers AA baseball team. Bennett Steel also fabricated and erected steel at Oklahoma State University’s football stadium and Devon Tower in Oklahoma City. Kirby-Smith Service, Manitowoc Cranes About the same time that Bennett founded his company, Ed Kirby and Fred Smith started Kirby-Smith Machinery. Todd, Peyton and Kirby-Smith are terrific to work with.” McPherson, Kan. New Potain Hup Crane Represents Investment in Time, Testing, Research A ground-breaking, self-erecting crane, the first from the new Potain Hup range, was presented by Manitowoc Cranes at bauma 2016. According to the company, the pioneering Potain Hup 32-27 is the first from the exclusive range and offers unique and innovative design features, and showcases the significant investment in time and resources, including a period of extensive research and testing that led to the creation of this advanced model. The new Hup crane will replace four existing Potain Igo cranes. The Hup crane provides superior lifting capacity at tall heights, increasing productivity for owners, according to the company. Like other Potain self-erecting cranes, the new Hup 32-27 is well-suited to space-restricted job sites and on these projects the new crane will deliver unprecedented performance, according to the manufacturer. It features an adjustable two-section mast that has a third section contained within the second. This design allows the third mast section to be telescoped out, boosting the working height of the crane to 88.6 ft. (27 m). When configured in the “low position”, working height is 68.9 ft. (21 m), and this set-up includes a slight extension of the third mast section, which is telescoped out a little as part of the jib erection process. Having the additional mast section integrated into the design, delivers a faster and more convenient set-up, according to the company. Further versatility is delivered through the jib’s luffing capability with a choice of three raised positions at 10 degrees, 20 degrees and 30 degrees, in addition to horizontal. The maximum height under hook attainable by the crane is 131 ft. (40 m). Several jib configurations are available that offer horizontal reach of 36 ft. (11 m), 75.5 ft.(23 m) or the 105 ft. (32 m) maximum. Shortening or extending the jib is a swift and straightforward operation, with the Hup 32-27 offering greater lifting capacity when working with its shorter jib lengths, or further reach when fully extended. Operator efficiency is maximized through Manitowoc’s new radio remote control unit. Featuring a large color screen with navigation delivered via a jog dial, the new remote delivers on-screen, step-by-step information during crane erection, as part of the new Smart Set Up software. The remote control offers three operating profiles, which allows the operator to vary the working speed of the crane to suit the application. The hoist unit includes Potain’s lifting technology which delivers unparalleled speed, according to the company. An integrated diagnostic tool can be used for crane support, while there are maintenance warning indicators for the trolley, hoisting and slewing mechanisms, as well as for lubrication levels. “We are delighted to introduce the next generation of Potain selferecting cranes at bauma 2016, with features that set new standards of excellence for the self-erecting crane sector,” said Jean-Pierre Zaffiro, global product director of Potain self-erecting cranes at Manitowoc. “We’ve made it easier for customers to operate and transport the crane and have also introduced new components that provide users with a more powerful machine. But most importantly these new Hup cranes offer better versatility than ever before. By designing so much power and flexibility into each crane we’re allowing owners to cover a much wider

range of jobs with a single machine. And this will allow them to dramatically increase their utilization rates.” The Hup 32-27 has a maximum capacity of 4.4 tons (4 t) while it can lift 1.1 ton (1 t) at its jib end of 105 ft. (32 m). Agility on site was a key consideration for the new range, so the Hup 32-27 has a rear-slewing radius of just 7.38 ft. (2.25 m) allowing it to be positioned closer to buildings. There are two footprint options, 13 by 13 ft. (4 by 4 m) or 11.5 by 14.5 ft. (3.5 by 4.42 m) while the crane’s unfolding movement allows it to set up in even the most congested spaces, according to the company. In addition, an integrated leveling system allows for positioning on slopes up to 8 percent or over height differentials of up to 9.8 in. (25 cm). Because the reeving of the Hup 32-27 is automatically configured to four falls of rope, it’s able to deliver its optimum lift ability as soon as it’s configured on site. And as with set-up, transportation has been optimized so the folded configuration of the Hup 32-27 is 13 ft. tall by 39 ft. (12 m) long, which also allows it to fit in a single container for swift and cost-effective shipment overseas. The crane functions off 480V threephase power supplies. “With the Hup 32-27 it’s really like having four cranes in one and our initial feedback from customers has been extremely positive,” said Zaffiro. “We have spent over a year testing these cranes to make them a reality and we’re confident this new range really does represent the forefront of self-erecting crane technology.” The Hup 40-30 will be the second crane in the range after the introduction of the Hup 32-27 at bauma 2016. The company will formally launch this crane at the end of 2016. Deliveries of the Hup 32-27, meanwhile, will start later in 2016. For more information, visit www.manitowoccranes.com.
