Graywell Helps Intrepid Museum Get Into ‘ShipShape’ Condition this method still left a lot of labor intensive work because everything had to be carried by hand up two more levels to the flight deck. Noone and Woods set to work to determine the right size and model crane for the job. The crane needed to be able to lift 2,000 lbs. (907 kg) at about 30 ft. (9.1 m). Woods also wanted the unit to have a radio remote control, HPLS (High Power Lifting System), and non-continuous rotation with slewing limitation. These features provide the crane operators optimal visibility and safety while transporting loads. When engaged, the HPLS can increase a crane’s lifting capacity by seven to 10 percent. This also improves the distance at which a load is extended. Noone stated that “the remote control gave us the ability to move the controls away from the crane and create a fixed location so that the operator could use the crane and not be in harm’s way.” The slewing limitation offers another important element for safe operation because it is set up to keep the crane operator from moving loads over his position.
By Kristie Pohlman SPECIAL TO CEG
Graywell Equipment, Oakdale, N.Y., recently fulfilled an unusual request. Greg Noone, vice president of sales at Graywell Equipment, received a phone call from Matt Woods, vice president of operations at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York, N.Y. The museum is housed in the retired aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid, serving not only as a memorial and educational facility, but also as a unique venue for special events. With a capacity of up to 2,500 people on its flight deck, most of these events require tables, chairs, exhibit displays and other supplies to be hauled up on a regular basis. That’s where the idea of a crane came in. Making Short Work of Long Jobs Until recently, all equipment and supplies were lifted using two service cranes that were mounted on the side of the ship. Although effective,

tions coordinated the efforts. The team attached the prefabricated base to the pedestal which provided a permanent platform for the crane to be secured to.
After reviewing load charts and options, Noone and Woods chose a Palfinger PK 16502B Performance with a winch.
Lifting the Lifter “Pinky” Pinchas Leitner, president of Lifting Solutions, Brooklyn, N.Y., used a Palfinger PK 150002G with a PJ 170E jib to set the smaller Palfinger crane and its specially designed power pack. It seemed only fitting that the right crane to set the Palfinger was another Palfinger. Having a total reach of 124 ft. (37.7 m) and capacity of 165 tons (150 t), the PK 150 equipped with its jib easily positioned the smaller crane in its designated site. The project took several hours not including the off- site prep work. The museum is closed on Mondays for maintenance and upgrades, which facilitated the work by eliminating safety concerns for museum visitors. The working area on the pier was tight but this presented no problem for Leitner. He is well-known throughout NYC as an excellent crane operator.
The Right Setup This project presented several challenges from the crane’s configuration to arranging its final placement. The power unit for the crane had to be custom made due to the the narrow doorways it had to fit through to get to the small room in which it would sit. Joe DeNigris, Graywell’s general manager, worked with Berendsen Fluid Power to design a power unit that could run on three phase electric and generate enough pressure and flow to operate the crane. Because the area is so small, Woods didn’t want fuel such as gas or diesel to power the unit’s engine so electric was the obvious choice for this situation. Placement of the controls was also a concern in order to manage the position of the operator yet allow for optimal safety and visibility. The solution was to mount the radio remote control in a fixed location using an “umbilical cord” to alleviate the need for a transmission signal. Another challenge arose due to the unique shape of the platform where the crane would sit. Noone mentioned that it “prompted us to build our own structure off site that could affix to it.” The knuckleboom was to be set on the side of the ship atop a pedestal where a Fresnel lens or “meatball” once sat. Noone and DeNigris, along with a team that consisted of Graywell’s service manager and a technician along with the Intrepid’s operations supervisor and assistant vice president of opera-
Plenty of Work The crane was installed in mid-December of last year. Event season is slow during the cold weather months but Woods explained that although the Palfinger hasn’t seen much work for special events, the museum has used it for quite a few other tasks since its installation. see INTREPID page 10 6

bring a range of equipment to the flight deck throughout the summer. Woods commented that the Palfinger crane “has definitely cut down on our costs associated with crane service, rigging and man hours related to operating our bomb elevator.” The elevator he’s referring to is the ship’s elevator that is used to move aircraft from the hangar deck to the flight deck and vice versa. Woods also mentioned that the crane increased safety because people are no longer carrying bulky loads up and down stairs and through tight corridors. “We are extremely happy with the way the project has worked out. The crane has been working wonderfully,” Woods concluded.
INTREPID from page 6
“We recently had to lower a Gemini space capsule exhibit down to the pier for overhaul and we are bringing a historic rotary engine from a WWII aircraft onto the flight deck” Woods stated. They also used the crane to raise a new stairway and platform to the flight deck which will be used for access to the public for viewing of marine berthing on the starboard gun tub. Additionally, they plan to have helicopter landings on the flight deck and will be using the crane to bring FDNY equipment and flame suppression foam onto the deck as a safety precaution. Introducing the Super-Balanced E-Dredger by E-Crane
The new E-Dredger features the E-Crane super-balanced equilibrium principle for smooth, efficient, energy- saving operation in dredging and related applications. according to the manufacturer. These include operations such as piling, ship salvaging, heavy construction with dynamiting, classic dike works, construction of breakwaters, land reclamation and beach and embankment preservations. The balanced counterweight design keeps the boom, stick and grab in near-perfect balance in all positions. This minimizes tipping so the unit can be mounted on virtually any type of barge, with or without spud poles. The low E-Dredger height allows maximum mobility under bridges and overhead obstructions. Tail swing is less than 25 ft. (7.5m). The all-electric E-Dredger operates on only 300 hp (225 kW), and is designed and constructed for easy disassembly and reassembly. The grab has greater closing power to remain clamped shut when
filled and above the water level. The Automatic Superlift Mode helps reduce the need to discharge material from the overloaded grab when exiting the water. The grab rotator, load cell and all connections and greases are designed and fitted for underwater applications. The unique open-stick construction eliminates buoyancy problems and improves placement accuracy, said the manufacturer. E-Dredgers are available in a wide variety of outreach, downreach and lifting capacities. Hydraulically adjustable operator cab provides optimum visibility. The crane monitoring system includes readout screens in the cab with remote access connections for troubleshooting and reporting, plus integrated software for visualization and guidance. Chittagong Port Authority Awards Major Contract to Germany’s Terex Noell terms of economy as well as technology. In addition to providing the latest technology currently available in this particular market segment, these machines also cut a strong economic advantage when it comes to fuel, maintenance, spare parts and final ownership costs, according to the manufacturer. CPA already operates six rubber tired gantry cranes, supplied by Noell Crane Systems GmbH five years ago. Terex Corporation acquired Noell Mobile Systems GmbH in 2009, helping Terex Port Equipment to become a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of straddle carriers and sprinters. CQ
A contract for the supply of six diesel-electric straddle carriers, one over 3-high, was signed between Terex Noell, represented by manufacturer Noell Mobile Systems GmbH, Würzburg – Germany, and Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Bangladesh, in December 2009. For CPA, one of the Top 100 container ports in the world, the decision to replace the existing outdated, mechanical straddle carriers of diverse origins Terex Noell technology is part of a major port modernization project designed to handle the region’s increasingly upward trend in container traffic volumes. In addition to being the first order for straddle carriers that CPA has ever placed with Terex Noell, the contract sets a milestone for CPA in 14

Minn. Business Aims Higher With Manitex
The Manitex 50155S was developed especially for high-reach applications, which was one reason why Agri-Systems/Systems West decided to purchase it.
Agri-Systems/Systems West Inc., Litchfield, Minn., a full service design-build company, has seen a lot of changes in the industry since its inception in 1967. The third-generation company is currently owned by Ray Doering. He and his team bring decades of experience to the company, with a special emphasis on grain storage and handling, as well as pre-engineered steel buildings. The company recently experienced another innovation in the industry by purchasing the all-new truck-mounted Manitex 50155S crane from Truck Utilities Inc., headquartered in St. Paul, Minn., which was one of the dealers to receive the first units manufactured. The Manitex 50155S was developed especially for highreach applications, which was one reason why AgriSystems/Systems West decided to purchase it. Doering said, “We do a lot of large grain handling setups with big storage bins, tall bucket elevators, structural support
The 155 ft. boom sets the standard as the highest powered-boom reach available on a commercially available chassis towers, overhead conveyors, catwalks, etc. We needed a crane that would reach a couple of hundred feet that we could use on different projects that gave us flexibility over standard tower cranes.” The Manitex 50155S has a 155-ft. (47 m) horizontal powered boom length and a 39-ft. (11.8 m) single stage offsetable jib, giving the crane 4,000 lbs. (1,818 kg) of lifting capacity at a tip height of 203 ft. (61.5m). It also uses the existing Manitex 50-ton (45 t) platform with a 155 ft. (47 m), five-section proportional boom, giving it a powered boom tip height of 165 ft. (50 m) and a lifting capacity at this height of 9,000 lbs (4,091 kg). The 155 ft. boom sets the standard as the highest poweredboom reach available on a commercially available chassis, according to the manufacturer. The 51055S was delivered in February, with an anticipated list of projects ready for it in Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota. “We have had a long relationship with Truck Utilities, they are a knowledgeable company with a great service department. They are good people,” Doering said. Agri-Systems/Systems West has many grain storage and handling projects lined up for this construction season, including on-farm systems and large commercial elevator expansions. HEK Platforms...
Mast Climbers Critical on Dubai Jobs Although there is a slowdown of new projects in Dubai, there is still a big demand for Alimak HEK mastclimbing workplatforms and transport platforms, according to UAE dealer Al Laith Scaffolding LLC. “We have HEK platforms working on many projects and demand is still very high. There is particular interest in the new modular systems, which introduce greater versatility, more productivity and reduce costs,” said Tony Nobbs, managing director.
Originally, a combination of mastclimbing workplatforms and cradles was to be used in working the facades, however, it was considered that cradles would not offer the stability and load capacity to work efficiently. It was therefore decided to use a combination of double and single mastclimbing workplatforms and a transport platform for delivery material to height. There are 39 drive units deployed, with each unit being moved three times during the construction phases. With 52 different elevations, planning and managing the installation was complex. Modular elements allow the mastclimbing workplatforms to be configured as required.. Al Laith Scaffolding provided not only all the technical engineering and drawings but also has four service engineers permanently on-site at any time. During major moves, Al Laith has up to 14 engineers on site. The company also provided full training of the operators for the work platforms and the transport platform. With the site working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, there was little time for servicing and reliability had to be maintained at the highest possible level. Because the apartments feature Tony Nobbs balconies, for the most part, the masts Al Laith Scaffolding LLC are mounted on chairs on the lower balcony and are offset from the building. However, using sliding extension tubes allowed the platform geometry to be modified to allow the platform to pass by balconies and then quickly extended to provide safe and easy access to the façade. The mast anchors are tied into the concrete slab. Up to eight people work on the 104 ft. (32 m) long twin machines installing insulation and steel brackets before hanging the very large dimensioned concrete cladding panels. The special lightweight concrete panels measure 11 ft. (3.4 m) wide by19.6 ft. (6 m) high and each weigh almost 8,818 lbs. (4,000 kg). Once installed, the walls are painted and the joints sealed. The transport platform is a vital hoist for the safe, rapid transporting of men and materials to height. Material is delivered to the floors as required and then passed through openings to supply the team working outside. A gantry crane also has been used by one sub-contractor to lift material up to the platforms. The contractors decided on a HEK transport platform instead of traditional construction hoist because it was able to carry large-dimensioned materials and workers without the restrictions of a cage hoist. Although the HEK transport platforms do not have the higher travel speed of hoists, speed is not a main concern on structures of this height, according to the manufacturer. Already well established, HEK workplatforms and transport platforms are now opening up greater interest because of the greater use modules, which allow for more efficient use of components and better integration between work platforms, transport platforms and hoists, which can share common masts. The benefit is fast erection time, few components and lower costs, according to the manufacturer.
Essential on Metro With limited space in which to work or place equipment, contractors working on the first phase of the Dubai metro had to find the most efficient solution. This phase, the Red Line, is 32.3 mi. (52 km) long with 29 stations, four of which are underground. For the most part, the metro track is elevated from the middle of the road and the almost identical stations bridge the tracks and are accessed by walkways from either side. The contractors have to be very conscious of space in order to minimize any disruption to the traffic flow in city streets, already heavily congested. When completed, the metro will carry 32,000 passengers per hour, and enable journeys to be completed quickly and help reduce the number of vehicles significantly. Because of their modular components which allow maximum flexibility, HEK TPM 1600SD transport platforms are being used on many of the elevated and underground stations to carry materials from the ground to the elevated station platforms, which vary in height up to 49.2 ft (15 m). With no height restriction, the 27.5 sq. ft. (2.56 sq m) platform is sufficient to carry palletized and bulky material such as ventilation ducting, pipework and wallboards up to a maximum weight of 3,527 lbs. (1,600 kg). Variable frequency drives ensure reliability and smooth starting and stopping to reduce the risk of damage to materials, according to the manufacturer. The compact dimensions of the HEK TPM — it requires a ground space of only 71.2 sq. ft. (6.62 sq m) — allow it to be placed for convenient loading without restricting movement of men and material around it. A ramp provides for easy loading or pallets can be positioned on the transport platform by lift truck. Unloading at height is just as easy. An automatic ramp folds down as the gate is opened for efficient wheeling out of loads.
“There is particular interest in the new modular systems, which introduce greater versatility, more productivity and reduce costs.”
Highest Precast Building In Dubai An Al-Futtain-Carillon joint venture is the main contractor on a $45 million staff accommodation complex at the rapidly developing Silicon Oasis complex on the edge of the city. The 400-apartment development is the highest fully pre-cast building in Dubai and includes three swimming pools and underground car parking. The 10-story building is built around a quadrangle with facades extending more than 3,280 ft. (1,000 m) all around.

Elderly Link-Belt Finds New Home In the tradition of Davy Crockett naming his Kentucky long rifle “Old Betsy,” and Capt. Robert Morgan naming the WWII B-17 bomber he flew into battle “Memphis Belle,” Loren Ballew named the Link-Belt crane he operated at Circle CC Ranch, Detroit, Texas, “Sweet Pea.” Ballew first got acquainted with Sweet Pea when a crane he was operating on the Circle CC Ranch broke down. Larry Townes, owner and operator of the ranch, asked Ballew to look around and find a replacement that he liked. Soon Ballew heard about a “sweet” crane in San Antonio, so he went down to take a look at her. It was Sweet Pea. “I tried her out as best I could in the lot and really liked her,” Ballew said. “Then as I was climbing down from the cab, I heard a small voice say, ‘Please take me with you.’ That was it. I called Mr. Townes, and he bought Sweet Pea.” Sweet Pea doesn’t go back as far as Old Betsy and she isn’t as famous as the Memphis Belle, but she has served Ballew as well as those icons served their masters. Now, as Sweet Pea is set to retire, she’s getting a new home. Townes has replaced her with a new Link-Belt crane. And Sweet Pea has been donated to Holt Crane & Equipment, the Link-Belt crane dealer for central, north, east and parts of west Texas, as well as southern New Mexico. Pat Farquharson, sales representative of Holt Crane & Equipment, said Sweet Pea will get a makeover, including a new paint job, and be put on static display at her new home in front of the Holt Crane & Equipment office in Houston. “We are very grateful to Mr. Townes for Sweet Pea,” Farquharson said. “She is really a piece of crane history, and we will be proud to have her on display in Houston.” Sweet Pea is a Link-Belt LS-98PL lattice boom crawler crane that was built in the late 1940s. Her replacement is a Link-Belt 108 Hylab 5, 50-ton (45 t) lattice boom crawler built last year. In spite of the difference in their ages, the two cranes are similar in operation and application, but like houses built in the 1940s and houses built last year, the basic purpose has stayed the same, but styles and amenities have changed a great deal. For example, the 108 Hylab 5 has a heated and air-conditioned cab. There was no such operator comfort in Sweet Pea until Townes took an air con-

ditioner from a motor home and had it installed on top of the cab. Ballew, now 87 years old, is delighted to see Sweet Pea relegated to a special place in crane history. He said he virtually grew up with cranes. “My dad taught me how to operate cranes about the time I could walk.” Since then, he has operated almost every brand and model of crane there is. “I think I’ve moved this old earth around quite a bit,” he noted. One of his big projects was the construction of an underground coaxial TV cable between Dallas and Houston. He also worked on the Lake Belton dam and loaded sand to build Interstate-30.

“I loaded gravel in Oklahoma for highway construction in Texas,” he said. “The gravel trucks crossed the Red River on a ferry until the new bridge was built between Idabel, Oklahoma, and Clarksville, Texas.” Ballew officially retired in 2003, but he has kept his hand in on the operator side. When Townes bought the new 108 Hybar 5 to replace Sweet Pea, he invited Ballew to take a look at it. “That new crane is a wonderful machine that can do most anything,” Ballew said. “As I was about to leave, I heard that small voice again from way across the lot saying, ‘Goodbye pal. Maybe we will meet again.’ It was Sweet Pea.” And due to the generosity of Townes and the Circle CC Ranch, the legacy of Sweet Pea will live on. CQ
