name on a business, they plan on being around for a while”, said Gary Lano, current president of Lano Equipment, and son of Hauser Lano, one of the founding brothers. In addition, Lano Equipment has become one of the largest dealers of Bobcat equipment in the world. It would probably not be hyperbole to say that after Lano began selling Bobcat in the early 1960s, the dealership had a big hand in helping the manufacturer become the success it is today. Another of the company’s major lines is Kubota, which was added in the late ’80s to reach the compact tractor market. Kubota has expanded its product line with excavators, track loaders and now skid steer loaders. Being a retailer for two world leading manufacturers, Bobcat and Kubota, sure makes our life a lot easier, said Kurt Lano, vice president. other product lines currently sold and serviced by Lano, include doosan, Felling, Virnig, paladin, Land pride, M-B, toro, Load trail, Eby, sany and Merlo. For the Lano family, and their 60 plus employees, maintaining the legacy of their business after 70 years of service to the twin Cities metro area is a primary objective. that legacy, that small business work ethic, where every customer, and every employee matters, is what has made Lano Equipment a top equipment dealer in the Midwest. First established in 1946 by four brothers upon their discharge from the armed services after WWII, the company begins its eighth decade as a second and third generation family business. Lano Equipment has three stores, located in shakopee, Anoka and Loretto, all serving the twin Cities market, and with e-commerce, they serve all over the world. What started as a company that repaired automobiles, has evolved into a highly respected full service distributor of equipment, serving all markets. “the heart and soul of our company is our employees, and our loyal customers.” “A wise man once told me, when a company puts their own

Starting From Scratch In a classic American success story, the spring of 1946 saw four brothers, oldest to youngest, Joe, Clarence, Leonard (Dick) and Gerhard (Hauser) Lano, come out of the war and pool $1,400 to start a business. Hauser, being the youngest, and the last to come out of the service, had to pitch in $500, while his older brothers each contributed $300. To this day, August of 2002, Hauser laughed in trying to figure out why he had to pay more. With the money in order, the brothers located a building in Chaska, Minn., not far from their father’s farm, and started doing business as Lano’s Body and Fender Works. The building wasn’t much, one could almost see through the walls, and after only three months of business, and fall approaching, the brothers were thinking expansion, a heated building. Knowing expansion would take more money, $3,000 to be exact, the brothers starting visiting local Banks. At their first stop, the banker told

the brothers that their father would have to cosign for the loan, with too much pride, the brothers declined and tried another bank. Their second stop, the Carver County State Bank, the bank’s CEO, Dana Dutoit Sr. told the brothers, “why should I loan you young punks $3,000, what can you do with $3,000, I will give you $5,000 and then you will have something” As history shows, the Lano Brothers certainly did have something.

that same day. Currently, Lano Equipment is the second oldest Bobcat Dealership in the world, and is well on its way to become the oldest. Rod Lano, Gary’s brother, a vice president of the company until his retirement just this past March, remembered his father, Hauser, pleading with Melroe to send them more Bobcats in the ’60s, due to the frantic demand for this invention. Rod Lano said, when he worked in California in the 1970s for Roger Melroe, son of the Challenges Met and founder, E.G Melroe, “People didOvercome n’t have a skid steer loader, and In their new facility, the broth- (L-R): Bernard Booher, service technician with Doug Nething, had no idea what it could do for ers not only repaired cars, but also owner operator of Fuel Tank Removal, Brooklyn Center, Minn., their business.” Rod added, after a sold the new Kaiser-Frazier auto- with a Doosan DZX 235LCR. simple demonstration of the mobile. and now farm equipment in the 1980s, faced tough choices. Would they close their two locations, and call it a good run? The brothers, now joined by their sons, made the decision to drive forward and focus more on the construction market. Lano Equipment added JCB, which offered products such as, loaders, tractor loader backhoes, rough terrain fork lifts, items that were new to Lano Equipment. More salesmen were added to promote these new products to the construction market. More attachments were brought in to complement the Bobcat skid steer, to reach new customers and new markets. The new business plan worked, but not entirely because of the new product lines, but because of the work ethic engrained in to the upcoming second generation. “Statistics show that the failure rate of most second and third generation companies is pretty high”, said Joe Lano Jr., son of Joe Lano founder, secretary of Lano Equipment. “We were always taught by our fathers ‘Hey, you come to work and you do whatever has to be done to help the business. Even if you’re the general manager, you work alongside your employees to move the company forward.” “That seems to be the best format to keep things in order, and working, instead of taking the attitude of ‘Geez, I put in 60 hours last week, and you only put in 50. That kind of thing will put your business in trouble.” Kurt and Roger collaborated, “Customers’ trust is of high importance, and Lano Equipment’s role is to listen to our customers’ needs, provide innovative solutions, assist them in any way possible to help them succeed in their businesses.

Brad Lano, owner of Lano Equipment Inc., was happy to pose with this Doosan DX340LC excavator.

Lano Equipment also has a permanent structure on the Minn. State Fairgrounds, on Cosgrove Street, across from the 4-H building. Just another way of greeting existing and new customers at the great Minnesota get together. The Minn. State fair is the second largest State fair in the United States, with close to two million in attendance per year.

Always Moving Forward Even as the economy was booming in the early 1990s, and their business was a big success, the Lanos were not at all content to just sit still and let their operation grow stale. Knowing the need for an industrial dealer in the north metro area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Lano Equipment leased a 3,000 sq. ft. building in Anoka in 1991, which the company outgrew eight years later. A 16,000 sq. ft. building was purchased just a half-block away, allowing little disruption for its customers. One of the first orders of business at Anoka’s new location, was to add Kubota to its product mix, to follow suit with Shakopee’s product offerings. Lano Equipment added a third location in 2005, Loretto, Minn. The third location aided in providing existing customers a shorter distance to travel for product support, and also brought in many new customers.

A Mutual Dependency Through it all, Lano and Bobcat have continued to enjoy a symbiotic relationship where each succeeded as a result of each other. Heeding the call to send more Bobcats, Melroe helped Lano to consistently become the top Bobcat dealer in the country by the 1970s. Since then, Lano Equipment has year after year received awards from the manufacturer for sales, service and community support. Most of the first and second generation Lanos’ have served on many sales, service and parts dealer councils over the years. “Bobcat continues to be number one in skid steer sales,” said Gary Lano. “In partnership with them, our company continues to be able to

At the 70th Anniversary of Lano Equipment Inc., the second generation consists of Gary Lano, president; Kurt Lano, vice president; Joe Lano Jr., secretary; and Roger Lano, treasurer. And now a third generation is taking shape, Juston and Evan Lano, sons of Roger Lano, are active in sales. Kurt’s two sons, Nick and David Lano are working in shipping and maintenance. Gary Lano has a daughter named Mercedes, who at age 12 said she would like to work for Lano Equipment Monday through Friday, and professionally dance ballet on the weekends. Time will tell. With this young, hungry group of people mentored by wise veterans, Lano Equipment should be around for decades to come, Gary Lano said. He added that even though he didn’t initially envision himself working for his father and uncles when he was a younger man, the experience of getting up and coming to work offers a new reward each day. “I think I can speak for my business partners when I say that we all enjoy coming to work and interacting with our employees, and with our customers, because they are not just employees and customers, they become life-long friends. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

The Next Generations As the original four — and then three — founding Lano Equipment brothers got older and had children, many of whom often worked in the stores in the summers, and after school, it was inevitable that some would continue to help shape the company as they became adults. Hauser’s sons, Brad, Rod, and Gary, have each served in company management. Brad held the president’s position from 1998 to his retirement in 2012. Rod was a vice president from 1998 until his retirement in March of 2016. Gary is the current president. Gerhard (Hauser) Lano passed in October of 2014. Joe’s sons, Joe Jr., Roger, and Kurt, are all active in the company, Joe Jr. is secretary, Roger is treasurer and Kurt is vice president. Joe Lano passed in December of 1996. Leonard (Dick) Lano sold the Norwood Store to his sons, Jack, Bill, Paul, Bob and Andy, all are active in the corporation today, except for Bill Lano. Leonard (Dick) Lano passed in January of 2011. Clarence Lano, one of the founders, is retired and living in Texas, at the time of this article.
