USACE Awards $222.7M Option 3 Contract for New Soo Lock
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Detroit District’s New Lock at the Soo project in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., awards $222.7 million contract Option 3 (Chamber Lock Operational) to Kokosing Alberici Traylor LLC (KAT) of Westerville, Ohio.
The Option 3 award will allow for construction to proceed as required to have a fully functional lock.
“Option 3 includes construction of the lock floor; installation of the mechanical and electrical systems; completion of the filling and emptying system; placing soil in between the New Lock and old Davis Lock; and commissioning of the lock chamber,” said Darin White, Inland Navigation Design Center, New Lock at the Soo technical lead.
With the on-time award of Option 3, the project continues to be on track for completion in 2030.
The New Lock at the Soo project is being built in three phases. Phase 1 (Upstream Channel Deepening) was completed in 2022, and Phase 2 (Upstream Approach Walls) is nearing completion this summer. The Phase 3 contract was awarded to KAT in July 2022 as a base contract at $1.068 billion. Awarding the base contract allowed the contractor to begin work in 2022 with the remaining work (contract options), to be awarded over the next three years.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District’s New Lock at the Soo project in Sault Ste. Option 3 includes construction of the lock floor; installation of the mechanical and electrical systems; completion of the filling and emptying system; placing soil in between the New Lock and old Davis Lock; and commissioning of the lock chamber.
“To date, Options 1A [Upstream Wide Wall Monoliths], 1B [Chamber Wall Monoliths], 1C [New Power Plant Bridge Ramp], 2 [New Pump Well Completion] and 7 [Alligator’s Mouth Mooring Area] have been awarded, totaling $503.7 million,” said Kevin McDaniels, district senior civilian.
“The leadership team throughout the Corps of Engineers have made the New Lock at the Soo project a national priority and we have continued to see strong support every step along the way.”
Three contract options, totaling $95.3 million, await to be awarded. These options are Option 4 (Downstream Work), Option 5 (Hands-Free Mooring) and Option 6 (Downstream Ship Arrestors). The Corps of Engineers aims to award these options over
the next year.
Phase 3 construction began in late 2022, and is expected to last seven years, given efficient funding and favorable weather. The New Lock at the Soo will be constructed in the footprint of the Sabin Lock and will be the same size as the Poe Lock (1,200 ft. long, 110 ft. wide and 32 ft. deep).
“The contractor has completed over $400 million worth of work through the end of July 2024,” said Mollie Mahoney, New
Final Girder Missouri Bridge
New Eastbound Rocheport Bridge Construction On Schedule
The last steel girder was placed Sept. 11, marking a major milestone in the construction of the new eastbound Lance Corporal Leon Deraps I-70 Missouri River (Rocheport) Bridge. With the final girder in place, crews will now be able to place cross frames and wind bracing on this final span, and then prepare for pouring the new bridge deck.
In July 2021, the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission selected the Lunda Team as the design-build contractor to replace the nowdemolished 60-year-old steel truss bridge. The old, single bridge carried two lanes of traffic in each direction and is being replaced with two side-by-side bridges. The new westbound bridge was completed and opened to traffic in July 2023 with both east and westbound
traffic shifted onto the new westbound bridge. The old steel truss was removed in September 2023, and construction on the eastbound bridge began immediately afterwards. Each of the new bridges will carry three lanes of traffic, matching up to the goals of the Improve I-70 project to expand Interstate 70 to three lanes, each direction, across the state of Missouri on this vital corridor for the state and the nation.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the end of the year once the new eastbound bridge is ready to open to traffic.
All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change.

Lock at the Soo senior project manager. “The contractor is demolishing existing concrete monoliths and beginning bedrock excavation in the footprint of the existing Sabin Lock. In the Davis Lock they are beginning excavating for the new pump well and preparing to fill the Davis Lock with excavated material. The contractor also is constructing a new bridge to the new power plant and a new utility access structure.”
Additional activities planned to occur in 2024 include pump well substructure construction and new concrete monolith construction.
The Soo Locks allow vessels to transit the 21-ft. elevation change at the St. Marys Falls Canal. More than 88 percent of commodity tonnage through the Soo Locks is restricted by vessel size to the Poe Lock. The New Lock at the Soo project will construct a second Poesized lock.
The Soo Locks are essential to United States’ manufacturing and National Security. The New Lock at the Soo project will provide resiliency for this critical node in the Great Lakes Navigation System. A 2015 Department of Homeland Security study estimates a six-month Poe Lock closure would temporarily reduce the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) by $1.1 trillion, resulting in the loss of 11 million jobs.

Volvo EWR170E Assists Arborist in Battle Against EAB
By Katherine Petrik CEG EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
The emerald ash borer (EAB) is a type of beetle that feeds on ash trees. When the adult EAB lays eggs under the tree’s bark, the larvae — which hatch in seven to 10 days — bore into the tree and feed. This inhibits the tree’s ability to transport moisture and nutrients to its leaves, causing the tree to become unhealthy and, if left untreated, to die.
In Minnesota, the EAB is considered a quarantined invasive species, and items that could be carrying the insect — including firewood, wood products and nursery stock — may not be moved without permission of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Matt Brand, certified arborist of Albert Lea Tree Service, has been working to treat trees, hoping to help stop the spread of this invasive insect. Unfortunately, he also must remove trees that have been infected to help mitigate falling tree hazards. This involves removing thousands of ash trees located on municipal, commercial and private property, primarily in Freeborn and Mower counties.
As Brand sought to expand his services, he decided to purchase an excavator, allowing him to do more work with less people and equipment. He turned to Nuss Truck & Equipment for suggestions. After listening to Brand’s needs, the new Volvo EWR170E wheeled excavator was suggested.
The EWR170E is equipped with the latest features, including intelligent technology, a powerful engine and one of the shortest tail swings (5 ft. 10.5 in.) on the market, according to Volvo. The machine’s load-sensing hydraulic system allows the operator to maximize engine power, while increasing controllability and responsiveness.
Machine specifications include:
• an operating weight of 39,573 to 42,329 lbs.
• gross power of 154 hp
• bucket capacity of .9 cu. yds.
• maximum lifting capacity of 12.1 lbs.
• maximum digging depth 18 ft. 10.4 in.
Brand is happy with the machine and the service.
“Working with Nuss has been great,” he said. “They are always available for questions and support. We haven't had much service but what we have was timely and
positive. We've only been working with them a couple of years, but we’ve never bought any equipment of this size before. We also are looking at a Volvo wheeled loader and a Volvo cab over high-volume dump truck.
Due to the type of work, Brand had the Volvo EWR170E fitted with a universal quick coupler. This allows the operator to switch attachments safely and quickly, boosting productivity.
“Matt has been a great customer of Nuss and Volvo,” said Andy Heinecke of Nuss
Truck & Equipment. “He continues to do a great job finding new opportunities to use this unique machine to its full capability. Since he coupled the machine with a universal quick coupler, he can switch between buckets and his grapple saw safely and quickly. We look forward to working with him as his business grows in the area.”

Manitou Celebrates 50 Years at S.D. Plant, Plans to Expand
Manitou Group, a manufacturer in the handling, aerial work platforms and earthmoving sectors, begins a 75,000-sq.-ft. expansion to its plant in Yankton, S.D. This event coincides with the 50th anniversary of this site dedicated to the production of telehandlers and articulated loaders.
A year after beginning the expansion of its neighboring plant in Madison, S.D., Manitou Group is now expanding its second North American production site in Yankton, S.D. This expansion will support production of the new range of telehandlers dedicated to the North American market, presented in March 2023 at the ConExpo international construction show. With 75,000 sq. ft. added to the existing 220,000 sq. ft., this $20 million investment will provide the Yankton site with innovative industrial resources, such as laser-cutting machines and an automated moving assembly line to support the group’s expansion in the United States.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Jacqueline Himsworth, chairman of the
board of Manitou Group; Michel Denis, Manitou Group president and CEO; national representatives from South Dakota; and Yankton Mayor, Mason Schramm.
“The expansion of our Yankton site, which is now 50 years old, strengthens our group’s historic presence in the United States,” said Alexandre Caharel, vice president of product unit compact and articulated loaders. “This is an important growth lever in a particularly dynamic market. This new industrial site will enable us to keep pace with this strong demand, while delivering ever greater added value to our customers.”
Through an attractive employer brand, Manitou Group has already hired 50 new team members since the beginning of the expansion, in a state where the unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the United States. This modernization will be accompanied by other recruitments that will be adjusted according to market trends. Manitou Group has 300 employees at its Yankton facility and more than 900 in the United States.

These strategic hires underscore the company’s ongoing commitment to delivering unparalleled service and building long-term partnerships that drive customer success.

Over the next few months, Garrett will work closely with Hayward to familiarize himself with the company’s operations, associates, key vendors and, most importantly, its valued customers. This deliberate, collaborative approach reflects McCann Industries’ unwavering commitment to continuity and growth in serving its partners.
In addition to Garrett’s appointment, McCann Industries welcomes Stob as its new CFO. Stobl brings a wealth of knowledge in financial strategy, having previously led the financial operations of a major retail distribution firm. His extensive background in driving sustainable growth will play a critical role in McCann’s continued success.

forklifts and compact telehandlers for the residential, civil and road construction industry and the transportation and handling of industrial and agricultural materials. The acquisition included AUSA’s 250,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility in Barcelona, Spain, approximately 350 team members and access to 200 equipment dealers worldwide.
“AUSA’s culture of innovation and quality matches the same standards we hold,” said Mahesh Narang, president, JLG, “and our shared core values around safety, productivity and sustainability position us well for the future. Together, we will work diligently, as both companies always have, to meet the needs of our customers.”
JLG and AUSA have collaborated since 2020, bringing the SkyTrak 3013 to market together. With the acquisition, AUSA products will enhance JLG’s line of telehandlers and complement Hinowa’s line of tracked dumpers and forklifts. Both acquisitions help accelerate JLG’s growth into the specialty equipment, agriculture and landscaping markets while providing its construction and materials handling customers with an even broader array of products — all backed by JLG’s robust training, support and service infrastructure.
“Our combined capabilities, market leadership positions and complementary product offerings provide a more comprehensive solution to address market needs, expand our operational footprint and unlock growth opportunities worldwide,” said Narang. “The acquisitions of AUSA and Hinowa help JLG create an organization that can better serve customers globally.”

Bridge, Riverfront Part of $5B Mile Project in Kentucky, Ohio
The project has been described as the largest concentration of public and private investment anywhere in the United States.
MILE from page 1
Kentucky. Having this many investors, planners, owners, regulators and governments involved definitely adds more complexity, but also brings sustainability, creativity and broad ownership to our mile.”
The $5B mile includes major investments in public infrastructure, as well as commercial, residential and office projects.
“It’s rare that so many of these opportunities coincide at once in such a small area,” West said. “In Covington, the availability of 23 acres of prime riverfront property is making it possible for this community to rebuild an entire urban neighborhood.”
Projects include a new interstate bridge and corridor connecting Kentucky with Ohio; the Covington Central Riverfront (CCR); a complete streets redesign of Fourth Street in Covington; a new replacement bridge spanning the Licking River connecting Covington with Newport; the Ovation mixed-use development in Newport; and the renovation of the Newport on the Levee entertainment complex.
The project has been described as the largest concentration of public and private investment anywhere in the United States.
“If you take into account the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor and all of the investments happening in Covington and Newport, that adds up to at least $5B,” said West. “Then, if you add to that projects on the Ohio side of the river under way or planned, that probably doubles the amount of investment all along the same one mile stretch of the river.”
Those Cincinnati projects include a new convention center; a new conference hotel; major renovations to Paycor Stadium; capping Ft. Washington Way; and the completion of The Banks.
West said the CCR project is a particularly
exciting opportunity for economic developers.
“Our approach to rebuilding this neighborhood is unique. Instead of selling the land to one developer to build one mixed-use development, requiring an enormous capital stack to even get started, we are taking on the traditional role of the public sector in an urban area. Streets, sidewalks and utilities are owned by public entities, so we are building that street grid, and by doing so, we are providing the framework for smaller, individual developers to build apartment buildings, townhomes, single family houses, office buildings and mixed-use structures.
“Our goal is to facilitate the development of an authentic 21st- century version of the other neighborhoods we all love in Covington, including downtown, Roebling Point, MainStrasse Village and Ritte’s Corner. This approach allows developers of every size a chance to buy a parcel and create their part of the new neighborhood. It also offers multiple bankers and investors an opportunity to get involved.”
Within the mile, Ovation is well under
way; the renovation of Newport on the Levee has begun; the state is acquiring property for the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor; and the OneNKY building and Covington Life Science Lab is under construction.
In April 2022, the former IRS building on the CCR project site was demolished, paving the way for the next chapter of development.
“The IRS provided livelihoods for thousands in the region for decades, so it was bittersweet to see the symbol of that economic engine close,” said West. “But seeing the building come down served as a significant step toward returning this land to the people of Covington and the creation of a new neighborhood to replace the one that existed before the Internal Revenue Service building.”
West was quick to point out, “The $5B mile is not just the CCR. The biggest chunk is the $3.8B investment being made by the U.S. government, and the states with the Brent Spence Bridge. CCR is probably a little less than $1 billion, and the vast majority
of that will be from private developers.”
Even so, Covington Mayor Joe Meyer called CCR one of the greatest challenges a city can undertake. He recalled gathering with other dignitaries to mark the start of construction on the northern half of the site.
“It was a symbolic day because many of us had children or grandchildren help with the groundbreaking shoveling activity. This is a major investment in the future, and they’ll get the full benefit of what we’re doing today.”
Meyer noted the city went through an extensive planning process asking residents about their vision. The most important value was reintegrating that area of the city into the surrounding neighborhoods.
“We wanted to respect the history of the original neighborhood and create a 21st-century version of an urban neighborhood. Our community wanted to have the texture, feel and connection to the rest of the city neighborhoods, with a diversity of styles and architecture.”
Elizabeth Wetzel, director of special projects and intergovernmental affairs for the city of Covington, echoed that sentiment.
“What is now the CCR site near the Covington riverfront was once a neighborhood of 160 houses and businesses. When the federal government bought the demolished site for one dollar from the city in the mid-1960s, it built an enormous one-story IRS facility and erected a fence around the building and surface parking lot. This not only erased an entire neighborhood but created a physical barrier between surrounding business districts and neighborhoods.”
When the IRS facility closed in 2019, officials repurchased the site from the federal government and secured an EDA grant to

Chicago Asphalt Contractor Embraces Electric Vehicles
By Chuck MacDonald CEG CORRESPONDENT
Nearly 100 years old, Gallagher Asphalt is a fourth generation, family-owned business with 225 employees. The Chicago-based company has four asphalt plants and numerous vehicles.
Dan Gallagher, CEO of the company, recently participated in the industry group The Road Forward. Composed of contractors, association members and academics, the group discussed how to implement ways to reduce the construction industry’s carbon footprint.
Q: You have stated that sustainability has always been an important issue for the asphalt industry.
A: Yes. Some 50 years ago, the industry began emphasizing recycled asphalt as a means of saving money without compromising road performance. That has been very successful. I appreciate the work done by organizations like the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) in helping us to learn about how to build longer-lasting pavements. That’s a key part of sustainability and reducing our energy consumption.
Now there is an opportunity to begin using electric vehicles as a part of our fleets. Sustainability lines up with reducing energy consumption.
Q: How did you first learn about electric vehicles and think about using them in construction?
A: It began when I was coming out of church one Sunday when I saw a Tesla in the parking lot. I met the owner, and he insisted on taking me, my son and a friend for a ride. He pulled onto the road and
impressed me with the vehicle’s acceleration. I drive to Springfield, the state capital a few times a year, to Peoria and other cities, so I started clocking my mileage. I wanted to see where the charging stations were. I thought I could make this work and decided to get a Tesla.
I got my first Tesla in 2015. I had always driven an SUV or pickup, so, this was a first for me. I now have 185,000 miles and have not changed the brakes yet.
I haven’t once regretted my decision to go electric. It has convinced me that electric vehicles are the future.
Q: What about the drawbacks — range, etc.?
A: Technology is always moving rapidly forward. Our industry is good at being flexible. I believe we are going to see the same thing in battery technology. My car has a 250-mi. range when I purchased it in 2015 and now after nine years and 185,000 mi., I get 226 mi. on a charge. I still have the original battery. Manufacturers are coming out with a more than 400-mi. range now. In the next year or so, it might be up to 500 mi.
Six of our employees own/drive Teslas. I have ordered four electric pick-ups as well as a semi. I have taken delivery of one Cybertruck and it is a great truck. We have charging stations here at the office and, of course, people can charge their vehicles at home. I can see this expanding beyond just personal use to commercial use.
Q: How will having electric vehicles change your business?
A: The vehicles have fewer mechanical parts, so they should be easier to service.
We usually aren’t doing too many long hauls, and these trips would be easily in the range of the battery. It’s going to make believ-

through various kinds of incentives.
ers out of truck drivers. Most people are slow to change, but I believe they will soon see the advantages of electric vehicles.
I believe when the semis arrive, they will be like my car with smooth acceleration and regenerative braking that will generate electricity to power the vehicles. I believe the new trucks will have less wear and tear on brakes, adding more life to the vehicles. And, of course, the vehicles will not need oil changes and some other routine maintenance.
Q: Other vehicles as well?
A: As battery technology advances, I can see a day when more and more of the construction fleet will be electric, including rollers, pavers and dozers. I’m not sure how it would work in the field — perhaps a battery swap?
Q: What are some of the other considerations that the industry needs to be aware of?
A: For electric cars, there were several tax breaks available. Those breaks have been removed because manufacturers have sold enough vehicles. But that might happen for semis. Of course, it would be nice if there were more places on the road to stop and charge. I’m not big on tax breaks. I believe technology has to prove itself. Still, I believe there is a movement in the industry that will help these innovations
At our asphalt plants, we have plenty of power, which would make them good places to charge the electric vehicles. We would be charging off-peak, and there are incentives for that. There are benefits to that instead of facing the challenges of having to find a place on the road to charge.
Q: How would you compare the costs of electric versus gas- or diesel-powered vehicles?
A: The electric vehicles could be up to one-third of the cost to operate. Of course, the vehicles will cost more to purchase. But this is a case of being an early adopter to new technology. For example, Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y are more reasonably priced than the newly released vehicles.
I know from my travels there are apps you can use to find charging locations. Not all of them are dedicated to Teslas. As the price of batteries continues to fall, the savings will increase dramatically.

AI Helps Simplify Data Management For Fleet Managers
In its report, “Practical Use Cases for AI in Fleet Management,” the company outlines five factors IT leaders must consider in harnessing AI’s benefits.
At its most basic AI, or machine learning, monitors large volumes of data that a telematics system can churn out.
As Teletrac/Navman explains, AI technology designed for fleet management clearly and concisely produces, analyzes and reports on that data.
“AI spots patterns and behaviors and can make recommendations based on the data,” said the company in a website article.
These tools develop expertise and offer data beyond alarms and status alerts, said Teletrac. AI offers a glimpse into the future of a machine or an entire fleet.
“It recognizes patterns that are hidden in the data and helps you answer the questions that you don’t know to ask,” the company said.
This is considered by the company to be “the biggest difference between AI and business intelligence.”
Where business intelligence requires the user know what questions to ask, AI uses data to identify factors most influencing outcomes. After identifying influencers, AI then provides recommended adjustments so the user can chart a course of action toward better fleet management.
Potential to Streamline Fleet Management
“The role of AI is to simplify data management and help fleet managers identify problem areas before they become an issue,” said Teletrac.
The technology then helps create realtime coaching and training programs a contractor can use right away.
According to Teletrac, AI factors in prediction with cause and effect and anticipation to streamline fleet management.
The company explains three scenarios AI has the capability to solve based on the data available are prediction, cause and effect and anticipation:
1. This seems familiar (prediction): We have seen “X” scenario before and “Y” was the result. In other similar cases, these situations tended to emerge.
2. I’ve noticed when this then and that (cause and effect):
3. Based on historical data, this is likely to occur (anticipation): For example, AI has noticed that reducing harsh driving generally increases vehicle lifespans and reduces fuel consumption.
“AI relies on data, and lots of it, to learn about operations and provide insights and predictions,” said Teletrac. “Fleet management systems capture an ever-increasing

volume of data from a wide range of data points, which can be pulled into an AI processor.”
Data includes but is not limited to engine diagnostics ODB2 and J1939, CAN bus, runtime, maintenance, fuel usage idle times and location and driver hours.
Other data AI is capable of capturing pertains to dangerous and distracted driving, fatigue data and vehicle/asset utilization data.
Taking ManagementAsset By Storm
The construction industry has been lit by AI and according to Fleetio there’s no shortage of fleet management product offerings on the market right now.
They’re all designed to help fleets improve safety, productivity and decision making. Some systems are designed to work through smart devices.
Last year, data analytics software provider Foresight Intelligence integrated AI features into its Fleet Intelligence solution, controlled by voice.
Speaking in English or Spanish, mobile devices can be used via voice to request assistance with real-time information about the equipment.
On the job site, dozers, excavators and trucks can be tracked for location, usage, maintenance and inspection details, based on the user’s role on the project.
Contractors, manufacturers, dealers and rental houses can better manage their assets, utilization and project outcomes deploying the right resources at the right time.
“Fleet Intelligence provides triggers and signals that allow teams to proactively man-
points a smart device at a tire and the app creates a digital model of it. The device reflects the tread depth of the scanned tire to provide accurate and consistent data, an improvement over the tradition of measuring with a quarter.
“All tire data collected via the app is automatically recorded and can be easily shared within an organization,” said Fleetio.
Users can link tire data to specific VINs or license plates to get greater visibility of tire health in relation to specific vehicles.
“By making it faster and easier to monitor tire health,” the app helps fleets replace or retread tires at optimal times, said Fleetio. “As a result, fleets benefit from reduced maintenance costs and higher vehicle uptime.”
Predictive maintenance analytics have become a key facet of a solid fleet management department.
With a goal of reducing unplanned downtime, Optimum Fleet Health’s system analyzes more than 8,000 performance indicators.
age their equipment, in the language of their choice,” said the company. “These new AIpowered features will have an incredibly positive impact on machine availability and project profitability.”
The AI-powered voice control features are designed to deploy and use easily with no training required or technology expertise needed.
Designed to be as simple as pushing a button and asking for information, the new features allow for quick adoption by crew members. As a result, the company said, the system promotes safety, ease of use in the field and efficiency.
“Fleet Intelligence helps our customers manage more equipment with fewer people,” said Dale Hanna, CEO. “Construction managers, fleet supervisors, technicians and operators will be able to access relevant fleet and equipment data in their preferred language.”
Purpose-built for the construction industry, the system provides “unparalleled” insights into every aspect of the mixed fleet environment.
“We’ve had telematics, sensors in equipment, computer managed componentry and other technological advancements,” said Ron Slee of Learning Without Scars.
This system “provides triggers and signals that will have a positive impact on machine availability and project profitability,” said the construction equipment trainer.
An AI-powered tire scanning program from Anyline gives smart devices the ability to read, interpret and process visual information.
With AI and computer vision in the company’s mobile tire tread scanner the user
The AI-powered Optimum VRx predictive engine can anticipate system failures up to four weeks before they happen, asserts the developer.
“With the knowledge that a vehicle is likely to fail soon, fleets can head off unplanned downtime by scheduling preventive maintenance,” said Fleetio.
The technology also diagnoses the causes of issues and provides actionable resolution plans for fleet managers.
“By elevating the efficacy of preventive maintenance, fleets are able to minimize costly disruptions … and reduce replacement vehicle costs,” said Fleetio.
Predicting Fleet ManagementÊs Future
In development by Bridgestone Mobility Solutions is a virtual fleet manager solution, which the company said will be available within two years.
It’s designed as “an extra pair of eyes for human fleet managers” who will feed the technology with data from various company operations systems.
“From there, the virtual fleet manager will interpret that data and provide recommendations and insights that humans might’ve overlooked,” said Fleetio. “Human fleet managers will be able to interact with the virtual fleet manager through questions and commands using everyday language a la ChatGPT.”
Raghunath Banerjee, Bridgestone’s vice president of data solutions, stressed that virtual fleet managers won’t be replacing humans anytime soon.
“They will get a virtual fleet manager who is really going to help them, train them, provide them with the right insight,” said Banerjee. see FLEET page 94

Rokbak Celebrates Three Years of High-Quality Hauling, Positive Growth
September 2021 was a notable month. Cristiano Ronaldo became the all-time leading goal scorer for men’s national football teams. SpaceX launched the first all-civilian spaceflight. And the United States recorded its lowest-ever levels of people living in poverty.
But in Motherwell, Scotland, the celebrations were centered around something altogether more groundbreaking: the launch of the Rokbak brand.
Since rebranding three years ago, the Scottish articulated
hauler manufacturer has carved out a unique identity based around robust and reliable products, an unwavering commitment to customers and an instantly recognizable brand.
“We had a solid product line at the time of launch, but introducing any new brand has an element of risk,” said Jacqueline Reid, Rokbak head of marketing, communications and product management.
“However, we had great support from Volvo Group and a clear understanding of who we are and what we stand for, so we were able to create something that perfectly encapsulates our company, our people and our products. And since we launched our customer focus areas, we’ve been able to evolve that even further.”
Brand Startup
Launching the Rokbak brand proved a huge success and led to five accolades at the Marketing Society Star Awards 2022. The company has gone on to become a leading name in articulated dump trucks in just three years, with its distinctive machines delivering productive and profitable performance to customers worldwide, in demanding applications such as construction, quarrying and mining.
“We set out to create something that not only we could be proud of but that others would be proud to represent,” added Robert Franklin, director of sales of the Americas. “Three years later, we have a strong brand, a strong team and a

Scotland’s Rokbak Reaches, Exceeds Its Pre-Launch Goals
growing dealer network, all with a positive outlook on the future.”
In fact, North America has been one of the biggest success stories for Rokbak. It was here that the company’s first machines were delivered in 2021, with a pair of RA30s sold to earthmoving, utility and clearing company Linco Construction of Houston, Texas, via Easton Sales and Rentals.
Since then, both RA30 and RA40 models have provided excellent performance in all hauling conditions to customers around the world. From muddy terrain to slippery slopes, from scorching heat to sub-zero conditions, these trucks are moving earth and materials in the UK, Ireland, France and Germany, and on to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand.
“We’re proud of the market image and enthusiasm generated by the Rokbak brand,” said Scott Pollock, senior product manager. “Our team members and external partners embraced the opportunities it presented, fostering stronger relationships and delivering a more solidified market presence.”
Setting Itself Apart
Rokbak’s success is rooted in its commitment to customers, which emphasizes close

collaboration with dealers and building personal partnerships with end users and owners. This strategy has been a cornerstone of Rokbak’s growth, with its dealer network expanding as the brand’s reputation continues to grow and customer satisfaction increases.
“We’re fortunate to benefit from strong word-of-mouth referrals and have a wide range of customers and dealers who have a positive view of Rokbak,” said Franklin.
“We’ve had several third-party approaches to work with us due to this. We have a different approach to others, and customers have
confidence that their dealer has solid support from the OEM.”
Rokbak’s culture of openness extends to its Motherwell facility where it regularly welcomes dealers, customers and operators to tour the factory, take a training session or catch up with colleagues.
ÂBak to the Future
Ambitious goals were set for Rokbak prior to its launch, which the company has not only met, but exceeded, including in sustainability, as Reid explained:
“Rokbak has introduced clearer communications and built a stronger dealer network. We’ve also improved our product sustainability through reduced fuel consumption and adapting to alternative fuels such as HVO. We’re increasing the time between maintenance intervals, to keep uptime high and reduce material disposal to further reduce our impact on the environment.
“It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in three years. We have the tools and the people to prepare us for future growth too. We’re always moving forward, and already looking forward to the next three years.”

Volvo Construction Equipment Expands Rigid Hauler Lineup With New Models
For quarrying and light mining teams who rely on rigid haulers to move material, Volvo Construction Equipment is adding two new sizes to its lineup in North America. Now, in addition to the R100 with a 105-ton payload, customers can trust the R60 (55-ton) and R70 (65-ton) to get the job done. These haulers are designed to move material at the lowest cost per ton while giving operators the latest comfort and safety features. Both the R60 and R70 are now available to order in North America.
Powerful Productivity
Rigid haulers are known for high productivity with a low center of gravity, balanced weight and tough yet flexible chassis. The R60 has a body volume of 47 cu. yd., and the R70 offers 55.6 cu. yd., which makes them well-matched for the loading abilities of Volvo’s EC950 crawler excavator and L350H wheel loader.
The machines feature a V-shaped haul body for maximum load retention and minimal carry-back post-dumping. The dumping process itself also is speedy due to a fast-tip system.
Providing real-time insights on payload, the optional on-board weighing system helps operators apply the industry standard 10/10/20 payload policy, where the machine can take 10 percent overload for 10 percent of the time but should not exceed 20 percent.
Speed and stability go hand in hand with rigid hauler operation. Both the R60 and R70 are designed with a new adaptive retarder system that can automatically control the rear braking system when traveling downhill.
When it comes to grip, the high-drive axle multiplication ensures maximum traction while the high-torque engine reduces fuel consumption with an automatic adaptive gear selection called Volvo Dynamic Shift Control. The engine also has an ECO mode that defaults to the most efficient gear, while the auto engine idle reduces engine wear. Both features boost fuel efficiency as well.
Safety, Comfort Reign
the operator will enjoy a powerful air conditioning system, ample storage space and Bluetooth radio.
On-the-Ground Support
Uptime is top of mind for hauler customers, and Volvo CE and its dealer network stand ready to support them with parts and technicians on the ground. Both the R60 and R70 have 500-hour service intervals, and maintenance can be completed swiftly due to a straightforward machine design that includes grouped maintenance points located within easy reach either from the ground or the service platform.
Common-sized bearings keep parts stocking simple and cost-effective.
On-board diagnostics provide insights into system pressures and temperatures and fault reporting to facilitate and speed up troubleshooting.
For long downhauls, the haulers feature gear-dependent speed control and a selectable brake or transmission retarder, which also helps reduce operator fatigue. The gearbox has overspeed protection and a neutral coast inhibitor for downhill travel.
Where Rigids Excel
For long downhauls, the haulers feature gear-dependent speed control and a selectable brake or transmission retarder, which also helps reduce operator fatigue. The gearbox has overspeed protection and a neutral coast inhibitor for downhill travel. There is fail-safe braking and a secondary steering system to keep the machine safely on track.
The cabs on the R60 and R70 are fully ROPS/FOPS certified, and operators can enter from either side via anti-slip steps. A large windscreen and low raked dashboard provide optimal visibility, further supported by the left-positioned operator station and optional Volvo Smart View for 360degree sightlines.
When it comes to comfort, an ergonomic, air-suspended seat, independent suspension and vibration-damping viscous mounts offer the smoothest possible experience for the operator. The steering is low effort, the wheel is adjustable, and
The choice between a rigid and articulated hauler in quarrying and mining depends mostly on the conditions of the site. While rigid haulers thrive on sites with wide, firm, wellmaintained haul roads where they can travel quickly (up to 38 mph) over long distances, articulated haulers are better on uneven, narrow, slippery and/or steep haul roads with shorter haul cycles.
Volvo haulers are known for their high productivity, low maintenance requirements and long service life, and the R60 and R70 are no exception to the rule, the manufacturer said.
The Volvo Site Simulation service can recommend the optimal site setup and machine fleet to help fleets meet production targets, reduce CO2 emissions and boost profitability.
These new haulers are manufactured at Volvo’s plant in Motherwell, Scotland: a site that has been the global heart of rigid truck development for 75 years.

Bobcat to Debut Several New Machines, Product Innovations at Equip Expo 2024
Bobcat Company will showcase several new and recently introduced grounds maintenance and turf renovation machines at Equip Expo.
Equip Expo attendees will have the unique opportunity to experience the Bobcat T7X, the world’s first all-electric compact track loader, according to Bobcat. While the machine has been on display at prior trade shows, this will be the first time attendees can operate the loader as part of Bobcat’s exhibit. The T7X is commercially available at select Bobcat dealerships and available to rent through certain Sunbelt Rental locations.
New Utility Tractors On Display
Introduced in June 2024, Bobcat’s utility tractor lineup (UT6066, UT6566, UT6573) offers a competitive advantage for hauling, digging, raking, scraping and more. Bobcat will display its UT6573 at this year’s show.
Bobcat utility tractors feature 12x12 powershuttle transmissions that deliver smooth shifting without stepping on a clutch pedal, according to Bobcat. Powered by turbocharged, Tier IV diesel engines, these tractors offer robust performance with low-end torque, plus an efficient fuel system. The tractors offer easy service access and simple maintenance, as well as reduced noise and vibration for more comfortable driving.
The climate-controlled cab, which comes standard on the UT6566 and UT6573, provides year-round comfort. The utility tractors also feature wide glass panels on models with cabs, convenient visibility to the three-point hitch, power and tilt steering, and ergonomic controls that enhance operator performance and minimize fatigue.
Bobcat Turf Renovation Equipment
Bobcat turf renovation equipment includes aerators, sod cutters, dethatchers and overseeders that serve landscaping and grounds care professionals across a variety of industries including golf, sports turf, landscaping and rental. These turf renovation products officially joined the Bobcat brand in early 2024 following a brand transition from RYAN. The SC18H sod cutter, AE19 aerator, AE30S aerator, DT18 walkbehind dethatcher and verticutter will
be on display at Bobcat’s indoor booth.
ZT5000 Zero-Turn Mower
The Bobcat ZT5000 is a high-performing, turf-taming machine designed to tackle challenging mowing tasks with precision and ease, according to Bobcat. It is equipped with an AirFX cutting system with a deep, bullnosedeck design that increases vacuum, lifting grass to the blade for a superior cut while the bolt-on, air-gap baffle technology accelerates under deck airflow for a professional finish. The ZT5000 is available with two cutting deck sizes: a 52-inch or 61-inch deck.
AT450 Articulating Tractor
The Bobcat AT450 articulating tractor is a four-season machine that excels at material handling, turf maintenance, slope mowing and snow removal, and is an ideal solution for landscapers, hobby farmers, golf course groundskeepers and sports facility professionals, according to Bobcat. The tractor’s articulating and oscillating frame keeps all four wheels in contact with the ground — even on rough, uneven terrain — helping with stability and limiting turf disturbance.
The Bobcat booths will highlight an array of other products including compact tractors; light compaction; small articulated loaders; compact track loaders; compact excavators; portable power equipment; utility vehicles; and walk-behind, stand-on and zero-turn mowers. Bobcat will also show its ZT6000e electric zero-turn mower and its ZT6200 autonomous mower prototype. Equipment on display will also feature optional accessories and innovative attachment offerings like the disc mulcher and Brushcat™ rotary cutter.
Additional Equip Expo Experiences With Bobcat
Bobcat is returning for the fourth year in a row with its zero-turn mower giveaway at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 17, 2024, in its indoor booth (3052). Show attendees can enter to win a brand new ZT7000 zero-turn mower by bringing their entry ticket included on their attendee badge to the Bobcat indoor booth. Must be present to win.
Bobcat is also co-sponsoring the Equip Expo arena concert featuring Trace Adkins with an opening performance by Clayton Q., at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the KFC Yum! Center.

Diamond Mowers Present Its 2024 Equip Expo Preview
Diamond Mowers is bringing its signature power, performance and productivity to the 2024 Equip Expo where it will showcase a premier lineup of skid steer and excavator attachments engineered to withstand the toughest terrains and demanding workloads season after season, according to the company.
Drum Mulcher DC Pro
Delivering a new level of mulching performance for low flow (16 to 30 GPM) loaders up to 75hp, the Drum Mulcher DC Pro is differentiated by its 63cc, two-speed, bentaxis piston motor, which allows the attachment to spool-up faster and deliver greater force to power through more and larger material. Features include a 50-in. cutting width to slice through and mulch trees and brush up to 8 in. in diameter; a rugged chassis that allows the operator to manipulate downed material; and an optimized infeed system that produces an aesthetically desirable chip size and reduces the need for backdragging.
Excavator Drum
Mulcher DC Pro X
The Excavator Drum Mulcher DC Pro X increases the versatility of midi-excavators by effectively cutting back and processing unwanted vegetation, making it ideal for land clearing and forestry management, according to the company.
Offered in 30-in. and 50-in. cutting widths to accommodate carriers from 4.5 to 10 metric tons, it comes equipped with a 63cc adjustable displacement hydraulic motor that provides impressive torque to process
materials up to 8 in. in diameter and oversized, serrated skid shoes to control, position and manipulate downed material. The pro-
cessing chamber is shaped to effectively mulch on the first pass and reduce the need for back-dragging while depth control rings
in
accommo-
that limit bite size for optimal infeed work in conjunction with sharp steel teeth to give operators complete control of the cutting action.
Reflex Stump Grinder
The Reflex Stump Grinder is an excellent choice for land clearing and rural grinding applications, according to Diamond Mowers. It uses the skidsteer’s lift arm to position its heavy-duty wheel in the stump, then drives it through the wood using the machine’s wheels or tracks.
This grinder is equipped with a cushioned parallelogram mechanism that protects the wheel from too much pressure, alleviating overload by flexing and keeping the wheel out of harm’s way. Grinding wheels are available in 24-in. or 26-in. cutting widths and are paired with an appropriately sized motor to match the hydraulic flow of the machine.
Expo attendees can see these attachments up close by visiting Booth #21104 during the show.

Yanmar Compact Equipment Launches TL80VS CTL
Yanmar Compact Equipment launched the TL80VS compact track loader as part of its new line of compact track loaders. The TL80VS excels in several segments, including construction, utility and rental. The vertical-lift unit provides performance similar to machines with 10 to 20 more hp. It’s equipped with a variety of features, including an impressive lift height and high-flow attachment capabilities. The machine offers Yanmar’s signature reliability and performance, ease of use and efficiency.
“We engineered the TL80VS to give the market a compact, maneuverable machine with performance that punches above its weight class,” said Peter Ovrebo, product management director — North America, Yanmar Compact Equipment North America. “This machine’s capability provides similar performance to larger machines while maintaining the agility of a more compact unit.”
Performance
The 9,610-lb. TL80VS is a construction-grade machine with excellent durability. A 2,900-lb. rated operating capacity and 74-hp Yanmar Tier IV Final diesel engine offers superior performance and productivity to maximize ROI. A 10-ft., 6.5-in. max bucket pin height improves the TL80VS’ ability to load dirt into trucks and thrive in other at-height tasks, according to the company. Users can navigate the jobsite with a top travel speed of 8 mph.
The TL80VS offers premium performance and operator comfort with a torsion axle suspended undercarriage featuring a pivot link system at the rear axle. The linkage technology uses a spring load that reduces oscillation and stabilizes the machine for improved ride quality and material retention. Additionally, the TL80VS can be optioned with a 34.3-gpm high flow with performance maximized by large line sizes, hydraulic coolers and direct-drive pumps for reduced power loss and increased flow and pressure directly to the attachment.
According to Yanmar, operators can work longer in comfort with the machine’s standard mechanical suspended seat
and a 7-in. touchscreen display improves convenience on the job. Premium 360-degree visibility enhances jobsite awareness and safety, improved by a removable roof hatch escape.
Efficiency
The TL80VS includes multiple options to raise productivity and provide intuitive operation. Self-leveling technology uses dual-direction capabilities to automatically level the load while raising and lowering loader arms. A work tool positioner enables operators to preset the angle of the attachment based on the task, while return-to-position technology lets operators set a designated height for the loader arms. Through auto two-speed, the machine shifts automatically
between low- and high-speed modes for a smoother transition between the two. This gives users more control in spaces with limited room, along with grading and other applications, according to the company.
Speed-sensitive ride control provides the convenience of enhanced material retention at higher speeds without needing to actively switch the feature off when converting to grading or other slower-moving applications.
Each of these features, as well as many others, provides more efficiency and makes the machine easy to learn, allowing for a quick training process for users of all experience levels.
Technology
Customers can choose to equip the TL80VS with Yanmar’s optional SmartAssist Remote telematics. The service offers a wide range of features, including error detection and notification to real-time operational status updates and daily work reports. SmartAssist also strengthens security with integrated theft protection, allowing the owner to set a range from a specific location and trigger an alert if that range is exceeded, according to the company.
Reliability
The TL80VS includes a two-year/2,000-hour warranty. The machine’s durable steel-embedded rubber-tracked undercarriage provides construction-grade dependability. Heavy-duty bar-tread tracks complement the undercarriage through improved ride quality and reduced vibration. The bar-treaded tracks provide year-round dependability, improving traction in extreme conditions like snow, mud and soft soils, according to the company.
Yanmar also provides a 1-year/1,000-hour warranty on the tracks.
The unit provides easily accessible daily checkpoints; removable skid plates; three-panel engine access; and a swing-out radiator that can be opened without tools for quick, convenient cleaning when necessary.

Snow Removal Equipment — How to Do More With Less
Many snow removal businesses base their decision on acquiring snow plow or pusher attachments on the initial cost, overlooking long-term expenses, improved efficiency, quality of clearing, and the potential to secure additional projects. When considering these factors, the optimal return on investment is achieved through the utilization of adaptable and agile attachments, even if the upfront expenditure is a little higher.
According to Degen Kelly, director of operations at Outdoor Pride, a company that generates approximately $13 million in annual revenue from snow removal services, it is tempting to focus on the lower initial purchase cost or to simply order the same attachments other companies use. This leads many to just “rinse and repeat” for par thinking, he said.
However, for the greatest overall returns, more attention should be given to the ROI that higher quality attachments provide. These attachments offer more flexible choices that allow a variety of movements in tight spaces, while adding to the value of skid steers, which are specifically designed to be nimble. Unfortunately, many standard snow plows and pushers have limited functionality, and if big and bulky, turn a nimble skid steer or wheel loader into a large, clumsy piece of equipment with limited maneuverability.
Given the harsh environments where snow removal is required, these attachments must not only perform efficiently but also must last over
sories that are compatible with skid steers, wheel loaders, front-end loaders, tractors and other machinery.
Among the OEM’s offerings is its AutoWing QuattroPlows, available in four models and machine operating weights, which are specialized attachments that allow operators to switch between angle plowing, wide-angle plowing, pushing and back dragging on the fly.
According to Kelly, Outdoor Pride discovered the QuattroPlow seven years ago, at a time when they were looking for an alternative to the attachments they were using.
“Most of the other options were flimsy, fixed box [snow pushers]. You really didn’t have the flexibility to drag or angle. The attachments where backdragging and angling was an option were bulky and limited the ability to easily maneuver the skid steer,” said Kelly.
The optimal return on investment when considering snow removal equipment is achieved through the utilization of adaptable and agile attachments, even if the upfront expenditure is a little higher.
Of course, given the harsh environments where snow removal is required, these attachments must not only perform efficiently but also must last over time.
“Once you crunch the numbers, you see how much time [high quality attachments] can save, how much onsite equipment you can eliminate, how much quicker your operators can work, and how much longer the equipment lasts,” said Kelly, who earlier in his career was responsible for operating snow clearing machinery with a range of
attachments from different manufacturers.
“Once you start to think about the ROI with the goal of doing more with less equipment, using a more flexible, quality attachment is a no-brainer,” said Kelly.
Effectively Removing New EnglandÊs Heaviest Snow Loads
Founded in 1988, Manchester, N.H.based Outdoor Pride has become one of the largest landscape and snow management providers in New England. Like many landscape contractors, the company offers yearround service that includes snow removal in the winter for large commercial and government-owned properties.
“All the facilities we maintain are zero tolerance, which means that if they ever had to shut down, they could lose a lot of revenue every hour. So, the ability to quickly and safely clear snow from a site is essential. We
need our entire fleet of equipment effectively performing every day during snow events,” said Kelly.
According to Kelly, the average annual snowfall in New Hampshire amounts to approximately 60 in. However, as recently as 2020, the state experienced winters with snowfall exceeding a 100 in. To keep up with the high demand for snow removal services, Outdoor Pride maintains a large fleet of more than 300 machines, ranging from trucks and full-size loaders to skid steers and walkway equipment.
For snow removal, the company has 85 Bobcat skid steers and mini loaders, each equipped with a unique AutoWing attachment from Minnesota-based SnowWolf Plows.
Founded in Minnesota in the 1970s as a family run snow removal and landscaping contract business, SnowWolf transitioned into the role of equipment manufacturer in 1990. Today, the OEM offers a variety of models and sizes of snow plows, pushers, blowers, and other snow removal acces-
In contrast, a key feature of the AutoWing design is the ability to extend and retract its side wings independently, depending on the width of the road or the amount of snow cleared. This allows operators to efficiently clear wider swaths of snow without manually adjusting the plow’s position, increasing productivity and reducing the need for additional passes.
The AutoWing also is unique because it only requires one hydraulic circuit for efficient operation. No additional wiring is necessary and there are no specialized controls. The attachment can be angled left or right with a standard control feature on the joystick. The user-friendly design simplifies operator training.
“[The QuattroPlow] has all the great aspects of a fixed box, along with the ability to easily angle and back drag. It has a very simple setup with just two hydraulic lines,” said Kelly.
Outdoor Pride also elected to utilize SnowWolf’s ActivEdge, a unique design involving multiple cutting-edge sections with individual adjustability and adaptability. The floating cutting edges allow for more precise snow removal even on varied surfaces and minimizes the need for excessive salt or deicing agents.

KAGE Raises Bar On Midsize Snow Pushers With New SnowStorm Blast
KAGE Innovation has built its reputation around snow removal products that are overbuilt by design yet simple to operate and maintain. Its latest snow pusher exemplifies that perfectly, according to the manufacturer.
The SnowStorm BLAST is a fixedside snow pusher with safety and performance features to spare.
Member of SnowStorm Family
A part of the SnowStorm plow series, the BLAST utilizes the mold board technology of the KAGE 2-in1 SnowStorm snow plow and pusher sys tem — for 15,000 to 30,000 lb. loaders and 100-plus horsepower trac tors — and replaced the angle plowing and 2-in-1 function with a hydraulic free, entry level pricing option that includes extra float and a 3-in-1 con nect feature.
Without hydraulic hoses, there is one less thing for operators to worry about breaking on those long, late nights of clearing snow.
abilities and more stacking capability.
The use of the AdvantEdge sectional cutting edge also increases the lifespan of the cutting edge up to 20x that of a standard high carbon steel cutting edge as the spring-loaded sections control down pressure and the material of the
steel or Carbide materials, according to the manufacturer.
floating and oscillating poly skids on the BLAST. This means, although the side panels of the box are fixed in place, you still get the benefit of the cutting edge remaining in contact with the substrate even when pushing snow over curbs, if the box were tipped too far forward or backward, or if the cutting edge were worn down. This also helps project the plow, machine, driver and infrastructure from excessive damage upon impact with hidden obstacles.
Equipment Friendly
With the 3-in1 connect feature, there should be no reason you can’t attach your appropriately sized machine to your SnowStorm BLAST as it is compatible with category II 3-point hitches and loaders with quick attaches — such as JRB416, Cat, etc. — or clamps directly
Easy Maintenance, Repair
These attachments offer more flexible choices that allow a variety of movements in tight spaces, while adding to the value of skid steers, which are specifically designed to be nimble.
Investing in Snow Equipment; Using it Flexibly, Efficiently
SNOW from page 85
“We have seen a benefit from utilizing the [ActivEdge]. Our plow edges are now following the contours of the pavement a lot easier,” said Kelly.
This pusher still boasts numerous features that make the SnowStorm plows stand at the top of their class including:
contouring cutting edge, the AdvantEdge, the SnowStorm BLAST mimics the performance of
KAGE replaced the fixed poly skid that are standard on its 2-in-1 system version of the SnowStorm plow with
Even maintenance and repair is easy on the SnowStorm BLAST. Release the pressure on the floating skids with an easy access leaf spring tension lever.
The increased efficiency of Outdoor Pride’s snow removal equipment has substantially improved its operations. Kelly estimates the amount of time to clear a complex area has been reduced by one-third, which often means an additional machine is not required. Due to its ability to conform to surface contours, the ActivEdge more effectively clears the area, reducing the necessity for additional passes or excessive salt applied post scrape.

Although decreasing operator time is important to Outdoor Pride, Kelly said there are other ancillary factors that contribute to the ROI. A major factor is the ability of the equipment to withstand the rigors of annual snow clearing.
The QuattroPlows the company purchased seven years ago are still in service and other than new edges from time to time have required very little maintenance.
“The [attachment] is an investment, but from what we have found, it is an investment that gives us results and lasts,” said Kelly. “We are experiencing significant ROI in decreased operator time to get through an entire property. We also see it in the longevity of the product.”
While the initial cost of equipment like snow plows or pushers can be a significant factor, it is essential to evaluate their long-term benefits, including increased efficiency, better quality of clearing, and the ability to handle more jobs.
By opting for more flexible and nimble attachments, snow removal services can enhance their operational efficiency and effectiveness. When the ROI is carefully analyzed, it becomes evident that the initial higher investment in advanced attachments pays off, making them an indispensable component of modern snow removal strategies.

Bray Construction Works On $5B Mile
work with the architecture firm KZF to design the public infrastructure to support a new mixed-use neighborhood and multi-modal transportation.
“We aren’t just restoring the pre-IRS street grid, we’re working with Bray and utility providers to separate the storm and sewer mains; install a new electric and fiber grid; and elevate the street level toward the levy to allow for structured parking beneath, taking advantage of riverfront views from new public park space,” said Wetzel.
“Our work is providing the backbone for private and institutional development that’s going to help define the future for this historic riverfront city.”
Bray Construction Services’ critical infrastructure work on the project requires a mix of Cat track hoes, dozers, compactors and off-road trucks. According to Bray project manager Dylan Lyon, the main challenge for crews so far has been the elements.
“We’ve lost [a significant amount of time] due to weather events. We had roughly a total of four inches of rain for April and six-and-a-half inches in May. Weather is an ongoing challenge in this line of work and can be unpredictable at times. Bray will continue to adjust accordingly to whatever Mother Nature throws our way.” Bray Construction is currently 15 percent complete with Phase 1 infrastructure. The project includes building streets and sidewalks, excavation, embankment and importing of clay material from construction sites located around the tri-state area to build the site to the proposed elevations.
The work includes storm, sanitary sewer, underground electric, communication and water line installation to service the different development lots, as well as installation of the concrete sidewalks, curbs, asphalt, landscaping and site furnishings.
Before work began, the site was mostly a gravel and grass field. Construction began in April and is scheduled to be completed during the summer of 2025.
Lyon said playing a part in a once-ina-generation opportunity is a privilege.
“As a company that lives and works in northern Kentucky, it’s an honor to be a part of this project. We look forward to the opportunity to contribute our expertise and dedication towards its success.”
According to Covington city manager Ken Smith, residents may not fully appreciate the dramatic undertaking that requires the input of so many players.
“Folks are definitely aware of most of the projects individually, but I suspect not many have considered what’s happening in the aggregate. These developments are for all intents and purposes contiguous, and when combined, they represent the largest investment ever in northern Kentucky’s urban core.
“We have intentionally designed the CCR development to be a complete neighborhood with restaurants, shops, entertainment, offices and perhaps most importantly, greenspace. We are taking what was a walled-off island separating our historic areas with our downtown and riverfront and turning it into a community that connects people and neighborhoods.”
Also included in the $5B mile project is a three-arch bridge design that was announced late last year. The Fourth Street/KY 8 Licking River Bridge project will add a fourth lane, update bike and pedestrian connections, boost safety for all users and lift current weight restrictions for large vehicles.
PCL/Stantec/Rosales is the designbuild team contracted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). KYTC public information officer Jake Ryle said utility relocation work is expected to begin this summer.
“A construction timeline is still being refined by the project team. KYTC will announce those details once they have been finalized. A final cost for the bridge has yet to be determined and is dependent on further design refinement.”
The KY 8 Licking River Bridge, built in the 1930s, is a critical connection for commuters, pedestrians, bicyclists and freight traveling between Covington and Newport. The structure has exceeded its original design life and needs major updates to meet the capacity and connectivity demands of surrounding communities.
For West, the $5B mile is a tremendous investment in the future. Witnessing CCR infrastructure work alone is like nothing he’s ever experienced.
“My educational background is in community planning, and the one thing I have always disliked about my profession is that too often, plans sit on shelves and collect dust. Seeing them being implemented is a thrill like no other.” CEG
With AI systems, users can spot patterns and behaviors and make recommendations based on specific data.
Technology Allows for Data Generation at Exponential Rate
In its research, Info-Tech delved into the concept of how AI is capable of transforming fleet management.
The IT research firm offers practical cases to help fleet managers and IT leaders solve their asset management challenges.
“Data is being generated at an exponential rate due to technological advancements,” said Kevin Tucker, principal research director.
The rate makes it nearly impossible for humans to perceive and analyze all the data in a timely manner.
“Fleet managers will increasingly need to use AI if they want to keep up with the … growth … for scalable transportation solutions and infrastructure.”
The complexity of implementation with legacy equipment and unsupported systems should not deter organizations from AI adoption, said Tucker.
“These systems are evolving, with the prospect of providing prescriptive instructions soon becoming a reality,” he said.
In its latest blueprint, Info-Tech highlights the importance for fleet managers to build collaborative partnerships with industry peers, tech companies and experts.
“With AI becoming a pivotal contributor to the fleet management solutions market, understanding its impactful delivery is imperative,” said the firm.
Here are five factors Info-Tech said both fleet managers and IT leaders must consider:
1. Be Intentional: Emphasize clarity about important AI adoption factors, such as policy, transparency, ethics and accuracy requirements.
2. Identify Embedded AI: Recognize and assess AI integration in products, even when it’s not immediately apparent, directly interactive or configurable.
3. Unmask Invisible AI: Diligently identify AI functionalities hidden within products.
4. Fix Hallucinations: Develop strategies to manage and mitigate the risks of AI-generated misinformation.
5. Enforce Responsible AI: Advocate for the development and deployment of trustworthy AI solutions.
Info-Tech maintains that AI in fleet management can also enable greater flexibility for remote and hybrid work models.
“This technological shift allows for remote monitoring, helping employees balance their personal and professional commitments,” said the company. CEG
