Jack Eike grew up idolizing his grandfather and the landscaping industry. His grandfather operated a tree farm in central Iowa, and it’s where Eike’s interest in outdoor design took root.
“I grew up helping my grandfather during the summers, and any school breaks that I had, I’d always come to Iowa and help gramps on the farm,” Eike said. “As I got older, this naturally evolved into a career path. I began to think, ‘What am I really good at, and what do I want to do fulltime?’ Landscaping was a natural extension of the nursery I started with.”
Splitting time between family in Texas and Iowa, Eike enjoyed being outdoors and helping grow plants at the tree nursery. Soon he felt a call to pursue a career in landscaping. After he graduated from high school in 2019, he and his father started Wood Duck Landscapes. He was encouraged to attend college, so he enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he majored in entrepreneurship.
While at Iowa State, he continued working and soon realized that college wasn’t for him. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 contributed to his decision to leave college and pursue his dream of working full-time in the landscaping industry.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Wood Duck Landscapes is a full-service outdoor landscaping company. The firm’s specialties are grading, seeding, irrigation, patio installation, landscape lighting, hardscaping and more, primarily for homeowners.
Most of the company’s landscaping and hardscaping work
is at Lake Panorama near Panora, Iowa. The lake community has approximately 1,500 homes, and Wood Duck Landscapes has completed 200 projects in the area since 2019.
Based on the early success of Wood Duck Landscapes, Eike added a second company in 2021 called BluGrade Earthworks. The sister company focuses on site work, including excavating, grading and trucking — a natural complement to his landscaping business.
“Our goal is to create a one-stop shop for homeowners, where our clients are dealing with one salesman or one project manager,” Eike said. “They can get any kind of patio, retaining wall or lawn feature that they’re after. And if they’re looking to build a new home, we can help them from start to finish on the exterior of the property — from clearing and flattening the land to digging a foundation for a new home. After that, we come back in and finish the property or the lawn with Wood Duck Landscapes.”
Eike’s decision to pursue a career in landscaping in place of a college degree is an example of something becoming more common in the Gen Z age group (typically defined as those born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s). According to a story that appeared in the Wall Street Journal, more young people in their late teens and 20s are choosing careers in skilled trades due to the rising pay and increased use of technology. Some individuals in this generation don’t want to be saddled with college debt for years after completing their degrees.
A significant factor in Eike’s decision to pursue landscaping as a career was his love of the outdoors and the satisfaction of seeing projects completed.

John Deere Premieres New Portfolio Featuring Next Phase P-Tier Dozers
Improving its product portfolio of large dozer offerings, John Deere introduces the 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier dozers as part of its performance tiering strategy.
Previously in market as the 950K and 1050K, these robust machines are the next generation of models to join the increasing lineup of John Deere P-Tier dozers.
The new 1050 P-Tier dozer boasts an increase in engine power and a redesigned hood and front-end design. In addition, both the 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier offer enhanced visibility and improved safety features, positioning them as an ideal solution for operators aiming to boost productivity and protection on the job site, according to the manufacturer.
“John Deere is dedicated to providing its customers
Taking safety to the next level, the Operator Presence System ensures that an operator is present in the seat of the cab, with the seat belt fastened, before the park break can be released. This ensures a critical layer of safety, preventing accidental movement or operation before the operator is buckled in. The P-Tier system also integrates the park brake switch into the system status monitor, eliminating the need for traditional park lock levers. This integration not only streamlines the operation process but also enhances the overall safety mechanism of the machine.
Enhancing operator comfort and functionality, both models now feature a premium heated and ventilated seat option, which is air-suspended with adjustment controls for optimal ergonomics. The seat design remains at a 15degree angle to provide optimal comfort when operating the rear ripper. The updated cab features new ergonomic controls, neutral counter rotate, and an integrated forward neutral reverse switch. This ergonomic focus ensures operators can work for extended periods with reduced physical strain, helping to enhance productivity on the job site. Remaining the largest PowerAngle-Tilt (PAT) dozer in the market, the 950 P-Tier dozer features SmartGrade, John Deere factory integrated mastless 3D grade control. This machine has the power for heavy cuts and the finesse to finish grade.
The 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier models boast advanced visibility and safety features as part of the transition to P-tier.
with large dozer options that fit the needs of every job site, and the new P-Tier machines offer the durability and reliability our customers demand from machines of this size class”, said Matt Costello, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry.
“The 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier dozer models were updated with the customer in mind, helping them increase efficiency, visibility and gradeability in even the most demanding conditions.”
The strategic design enhancements of the new P-Tier dozer models aim to improve operator safety, visibility on the job and uptime. Now equipped with standard LEDs, operator efficiency has been significantly improved during night-time or low-light operations. Also helping to improve uptime, the cold weather hydraulic lines are specially tailored for cold climate operations. These hoses, which replace the standard option, are rated for lower temperatures, ensuring smooth hydraulic function in harsh winter and weather conditions.
The cab of the 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier can be tilted for easy serviceability access under the cab.
Receiving a significant increase in operational advantages upon its entry to the P-Tier portfolio, the newly upgraded 1050 P-Tier dozer boasts a range of features and enhancements that boost overall functionality and efficiency. One notable upgrade is the tag link and blade design that brings the blade 10 in. closer to the frame.
Along with the tag link, inverted tilt and pitch cylinders were added. The inverted tilt and pitch cylinders, lowered hood and larger front window help improve operator visibility to the blade. The repositioning of the 168-in. blade, due to the updated tag link design, paired with doublebogie undercarriage provides operators with a more balanced machine and a clearer view of the blade corners, which is a critical factor for precision work.
In terms of power, the 1050 P-Tier dozer features a revamped JD14 (13.6 L) engine which replaces the 13.5 L engine in the 1050K. The JD14 enhances durability, reduces fuel consumption and uses a single canister in the aftertreatment system to meet emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter.
Lastly, on the 1050 P-Tier, the new cooling system has been redesigned with a single plane layout, positioning coolers side-by-side instead of stacked. This new design not only improves cooling efficiency but also simplifies access for cleaning.

Cat Medium Dozers Receive Technology Package Upgrades
Caterpillar announced two technology package upgrades for its medium dozer line.
Formerly ARO with Assist, Cat Assist with ARO (attachment ready option) suite of features will be included as a standard feature on Cat D4, D5, D6, D6 XE and D7 models, starting in early 2024. Additionally, a new Cat Grade with 3D Ready option provides more flexibility for customers upgrading to Cat Grade with 3D on D4, D5 and D6 dozer models.
Now standard, Cat Assist with ARO ensures that every new Cat D4 to D7 dozer comes equipped with the suite of Assist features that can be easily upgraded to Cat Grade 3D. These features include:
• Stable Blade — Make finish dozing easier
• Traction Control — Reduce track slip to minimize wear
• Auto Carry — Maximizes blade loads
• Blade Load Monitor — Operator coaching for productivity
• ARO — Sensors (IMUs) on machine for GPS capability
Cat Grade with 3D uses a GPS signal to automatically adjust blade lift and tilt movements, so operators can get to design faster, save time and reduce the cost of rework, labor and materials.
The new Cat Grade with 3D Ready option consists of all the hardware required for the 3D system and comes installed and tested from the factory. The option includes onboard sensors, GNSS antennas and receivers, and a 10-in. touchscreen display. This allows the 3D Ready hardware to be quickly updated to a complete Grade with 3D system with the purchase of necessary licenses through the Cat dealer.

Hyundai Adds Another Product Category With Introduction of HD100 Tracked Dozer
The Hyundai HD100 dozer is a 10-ton-class machine with a standard blade capacity of 2.9-cu. yd. and a digging depth of 1 ft. 6 in.
HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America announced the expansion of its product line into crawler dozers with the availability of its first new dozer model, the 115 net hp (86 kW) Hyundai HD100.
The addition of dozers to the Hyundai product line broadens its line of earthmoving equipment, which already includes wheel loaders, hydraulic excavators, articulated dump trucks, skid steers and compact track loaders, as well as equipment designed for material handling in specialized applications.
“The new HD100 dozer will be a great addition to the equipment fleets of earthmoving contractors, forestry, waste handlers and other customers who already enjoy the benefits of using Hyundai wheel loaders and excavators,” said Mike Ross, senior VP, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America. “It’s further evidence of the Hyundai commitment to providing the right solution for a wide range of earthmoving and material-handling applications.”
David Spooner, product manager, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America, said, “This new Hyundai dozer delivers best-in-class power-to-weight ratio and the best visibility to the dozer blade. Our dealers and customers, especially in landscaping and forestry, have already expressed a lot of interest in this machine.
“Customers know that, when they buy a machine with the Hyundai name, they will get a full-featured machine with more standard features, as well as Hyundai’s industry-leading warranty and support from Hyundai’s expanding network of dealers.”
He said the Hyundai HD100 dozer is designed to be heavier and deliver more power and tractive ability than other dozers in its size class. The machine’s undercarriage system includes dual-flange rollers outside the chain of the track and single-flange rollers inside the chain of the track to help ensure the track stays on the undercarriage to reduce wear and provide greater operator comfort.
The Hyundai HD100 dozer is a 10-ton-class machine with a standard blade capacity of 2.9-cu. yd. and a digging depth of 1 ft. 6 in. The fuel-efficient 4-cylinder Hyundai G2 DM03 engine meets Tier IV Final emissions standards. Standard operating weight is 23,589 lb., and track length on the ground is 108 in. A hydrostatic transmission provides
smooth control of speed and torque while enhancing ease of operation.
Superior Visibility, Grading Precision Increase Productivity, Efficiency
The Hyundai HD100 dozer offers superior visibility to the standard 6-way angle blade. Positioning the electronic cooling system at the back of the machine results in an unobstructed view of the blade.
Further adding to the excellent visibility to the working end of the dozer are the narrow front hood, placement of the inline pre-cleaner under the hood, minimized cab pillars and maximized glass areas including all-glass doors. A rearview camera, high-illumination LED lights and four premium wiper blades are all standard.
The standard 6-way variable-angle-pitch dozer blade — with a maximum angle of 25 degrees — delivers more precision when grading or moving dirt, clay and other materials. The standard blade float function is ideal for fine finishing or smooth back grading.
The machine is compatible with grading technologies that help even novice operators work faster and more precisely, save time and fuel and maximize productivity, according to the manufacturer.
The 2D Smart Blade assist function, which comes standard, makes precision grading easier. The HD100 also can be ordered Trimble-ready from the factory. This optional 3D machine guidance and 3D machine control system activates automatic blade movements based on GPS coordinates.
Options Add Versatility
An LGP (low ground pressure) option is available when ordering the dozer with a wider 10 ft. 7 in. blade vs. the standard 8 ft. 11 in. blade, along with track shoes that are 4 in. wider than the standard shoes. Other available options include a parallel ripper or towing draw bar.
Other key specifications include maximum travel speed of 5.6 mph, seven track rollers, shoe width of 1 ft. 8 in., ground contact pressure of 5.6 psi (38.6 kPa) with a standard blade. Ground pressure is 4.2 psi (29.0 kPa) with the optional LGP package.

Volvo Expands Soil Compactor Lineup With 12-Ton Model, Largest in Portfolio
Volvo photo
The 12-ton machine becomes the largest model in the Volvo soil compaction portfolio with an 84-inch smooth-drum and operating weight of 26,565 lbs.
Volvo Construction Equipment is broadening its compaction range in North America with a new model targeting medium- to heavy-duty compaction jobs.
The new SD125 soil compactor is designed to provide exceptional results with low operating and ownership costs, making it a fit for both rental houses and highway contractors, according to the manufacturer.
The 12-ton machine becomes the largest model in the Volvo soil compaction portfolio with an 84-in. smooth-drum and operating weight of 26,565 lbs. (12,050 kg). Its specs are similar to the existing SD115 but with a 0.2 in. (5 mm) thicker drum shell and a heavier outer eccentric weight. This results in an additional 935 lbs. (424 kg) of mass on the drum, increasing the static load and eccentric force for a different amplitude profile.
“The SD125 is a direct response to dealers and customers who have asked for a machine that combines the quality and performance of the SD115 with the heavier weight of a 12ton machine,” said Justin Zupanc, compaction product manager. “We take feedback seriously, and I think this model shows that.”
Superior Performance
As terrain and material depths change, the ability to adjust dynamic drum forces is as simple as the flip of a switch on the new SD125. Another switch adjusts the two drum frequencies to compensate for changing conditions, and a fivefrequency feature is available as an option to further boost versatility and performance.
The center joint provides +/-35 degrees of articulation and +/-12 degrees of drum oscillation for stable yet flexible performance and greater operator comfort over rough terrain. Because the drum is in constant contact with the ground, compaction is smooth and uniform.
The additional static weight on the drum frame enhances stability and performance with the ability to negotiate 35 percent slopes for better gradeability. The angled frame allows higher clearance in the approach to steep slopes and while loading, eliminating the possibility of damaging the surface or the machine. The frame and articulation joint are covered
by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty.
A heavy-duty axle is integrated into the drivetrain for an efficient rear wheel drive system. The No-Spin differential increases traction, eliminates tire slippage and improves gradeability, performance and productivity. A high-traction variant is available for demanding applications where additional torque is needed to tackle extreme slopes or thick lifts of loose material.
All three levels of Compact Assist software are available on the in-cab tablet (the Volvo Co-Pilot) allowing users to determine the visibility, mapping and reporting features that are most important to them.
More Sustainable Design
The SD125 features a powerful Tier IV F four-cylinder Volvo engine with 147.5 hp (110 kW). Active DPF regeneration eliminates material build-up, further reducing emissions. The engine is backed by Volvo dealer service and parts support and a 1,000-hour warranty.
Additional features include:
• A hydraulically operated engine cooling fan that runs only when needed, reducing fuel consumption.
• Lower noise levels for operator comfort.
• Optional fan reverse for cleaning out the coolers.
• Volvo long-life coolant to protect the machine for up to 6,000 hours.
• Remote hydraulic test ports that can be configured to enable quick and easy hydraulic checkpoints without having to open the system.
In line with the Volvo commitment to safety, the emergency stop system shuts down the engine, applies the brakes and stops the machine’s movement if the operator rises from the seat for more than five seconds during operation.
The SD125 is designed and built at the Volvo CE North American headquarters in Shippensburg, Pa., along with all Volvo asphalt and soil compactors. This year marks 50 years of compaction engineering and manufacturing at the site.
The SD125 will be available for order in North America during the first half of 2025.

Dynapac’s New VI Generation Uses Large Model Technology
Dynapac has introduced the new 8-ton tandem asphalt roller CC2200 VI.
The CC2200 VI belongs to a series of new rollers from 8 to 10 ton with drum width 59 to 66 in. It comes with numerous new features that ensure optimal paving results, operational efficiency and operator comfort, the manufacturer said.
New Range of Rollers
The new range includes three articulated models (CC2200VI, CC3200VI, CO2200VI) and an additional two fixed frame pivot steer split drum models (CX8 and CX9) from 59 to 66 in. drum widths. Combination versions also will be available in select models of this range.
SEISMIC Sensation
The New VI Generation midrange roller uses several technologies from its larger counterpart CC4200VI-6200VI, like 180-degree seat rotation, an efficient eccentric system combined with active ECO mode to reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint, and full backup water sprinkler systems. A newly upgraded simplified operator control panel for this series with a full-color seven-inch touchscreen display provides more machine controls for the operator.
More Comfort, Control
The Dynapac CC2200 VI has been designed for maximum operator comfort and safety. Its ergonomically designed interior comes with a new operator interface, including a full-color seven-inch touch display and easy access to all controls. The optional 360-degree pedestrian detection camera provides operators with a continuous “bird’s eye” view while working, offering more comfort and safety on the job site.
The corrosion-free water tank is mounted low in the front frame, which contributes to the 1x1 m view and full visibility of the drum surface and drum spray nozzles. The seat and steering module welcome drivers with 180-degree rotation and full sliding function.
The CC2200 VI also can be equipped with various extra features designed to best fit local conditions including an operator’s platform with CAB, Automatic Climate Control, Full 255-degree seat rotation and more.
The Dynapac CC2200 VI comes with SEISMIC asphalt technology that offers benefits for both optimal compaction and operator comfort. SEISMIC asphalt automatically determines the optimal frequency for any compacted material, constantly monitoring the variations of the asphalt layer, and automatically adjusts to temperature conditions. The SEISMIC asphalt system is active on both drums to help reduce the required vibration power and energy consumption during compaction. The resulting lower noise levels and vibrations within the cabin provides the operator with greater comfort while delivering optimal compaction on the job site, according to the manufacturer.
Smart Communication, Compaction, Documentation
The Dynapac CC2200 VI can be equipped with the optional unique Dyn@Lyzer system. As a state-of-the-art compaction control and documentation system, Dyn@Lyzer records and maps the stiffness and compaction progress of the compacted asphalt layer in real-time, as well as measures the asphalt temperature and number of completed passes. It additionally functions as a quality control and assurance device, as well as a productivity tool to optimize the compaction effort.
Seamless communication is key during any compaction job, which is why operators can also look forward to an open interface for 3rd party compaction control systems.
Savings, Sustainability
As with all Dynapac products, the CC2200 VI meets the strictest environmental regulations including automatic idling to reduce fuel consumption and lower noise emissions. Additionally, the unique active ECO mode can save up to 20 percent more fuel and comes standard for the Tier IV final and Stage V engines. Biodegradable hydraulic fluid is an optional alternative. The SEISMIC asphalt system will improve upon these to further increase fuel savings even more.

The project was to renew the agricultural road near the Dutch village of Ferwert quickly and economically using low-emission machinery.
The contractors decided to use the in-place cold recycling method, preparing the reclaimed material on site immediately and then reuses it for the paving process. They used a tried and tested combination of Wirtgen Group machines: the W 240 CRi cold recycler from Wirtgen and the new SUPER 2100-5i Highway Class paver from Vögele.
The environmental performance of road construction projects is becoming more and more of a focus. In-place cold recycling has become established as a resource-saving technique which also delivers economic benefits as a result of the time and expense saved.
The Dutch companies KWS and Freesmij opted for this rehabilitation method on the 0.8 mi. long and 10.2 ft. wide asphalt road near the village of Ferwert. The paving crew used the Wirtgen Group cold recycling train to mill off the existing asphalt layer and also to prepare the material on site (also called “in situ” or “in-place”) and make a new base course of bitumenstabilized material (BSM) by mixing in binders and other aggregates.
“In-place cold recycling is the response to the ecological and economic demands of modern road construction,” said Raymond van de Stadt, managing director asphalt at primary contractor KWS.
“In just two days, we renewed the entire stretch of road using 100 percent recycled material, thereby significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and, of course, saving time and costs compared to conventional methods.”
Another benefit of cold recycling was key in this application on a narrow agricultural road: the entire recycling train takes up the width of just one lane. To rehabilitate the 10.2 ft. wide road in one pass, the team first used a W 100 Fi compact milling machine from Wirtgen to pre-mill at a width of 3 ft. and a depth of 5.9 in.
This was followed by the cold recycling train, consisting of water and bitumen tank wagons, the Wirtgen W 240 CRi cold recycler and the new SUPER 2100-5i large paver from Vögele. As this process prepares the reclaimed material in situ and uses it for the paving process immediately, both the recycler and the paver had to achieve a high output.
The W 240 CRi can produce up to 882 tons of material an hour at a max-
imum pave width of 7.7 ft., while the SUPER 2100-5i can take up to 22 tons of material with an extra material hopper and pave up to 1,213 tons per hour.
On the job site in Ferwert, the cold recycler milled out the old road material to a depth of 5.9 in. in one pass, and in the mixing chamber prepared the material to form homogeneous BSM by adding foamed bitumen using an integrated Vario spray bar.
The W 240 CRi then transferred the material to the following Vögele paver, which paved the 5.9 in. high base course at a speed of around 13.1 ft. per minute. After completion of the recycling work, the SUPER 2100-5i sealed the base course with a 1.6 in. thick asphalt surface course.
The contractors relied on environmentally-friendly technologies, both for the machines used and for the rehabilitation process itself. The Vögele large paver of the new “Dash 5” generation features a particularly sustainable drive concept, for example: with a 6cylinder John Deere engine, the SUPER 2100-5i meets European exhaust emissions standard stage 5 and still achieves 178 kW at 1,700 rpm, even in ECO mode.

Updated Material Handling Control System Proves Key
The intelligent engine management system and Vögele EcoPlus optimized lowemissions package also reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 25 percent. The splitter gearbox, the controlled hydraulic oil temperature circuit, the energyoptimized tamper stroke and the speed-controlled fan all contribute to the reduction.
Another new feature of the “Dash 5” pavers — the updated material handling control system — also was beneficial in terms of the environmental performance and quality of the construction project. The auger and conveyors now communicate with one other, ensuring that material feed is even more consistent and precisely coordinated. This avoids load peaks, saves fuel, enables an optimum head of mix, and so uninterrupted paving.
The new hydraulically extendable limiting plate for the auger tunnel, called the Power Tunnel, additionally ensured an optimum material height in front of the AB 500 TV extending screed used on the job site.
Equipped with tamper bar and vibrator compacting systems, the screed also achieves
a high degree of pre-compaction. With the hydraulic tamper stroke adjustment, the paving team was able to adjust the tamper stroke at the touch of a button from 0.16 in. to 0.32 in., optimally setting it within seconds for paving the base course and then the surface course. This significantly shortens setup times compared to mechanical adjustment. The adjustment method also ensured optimum pre-compaction, good screed floating behavior, and consequently an ideal paving result.
After only two days, the entire 0.8 mi. stretch of road was completely rehabilitated. This successful test run convinced the contractors of the economic and environmental benefits of the method. The resource-saving use of material, the high quality of the prepared material, the reduced transportation required and the drop in CO₂ emissions — as well as rehabilitation in one pass — make a significant contribution to greater climate protection and efficiency in road construction.

Contractor Opts for DEVELON to Ease Work in Tight Spaces
“I think the biggest motivator for me doing outdoor work is the overall satisfaction I get from transforming a customer’s property from something that could be messy or dirty into something that looks clean, looks nice, and is really what they are after,” he said. “Fulfilling their dreams.”
Overcoming Challenges
Like many landscaping companies, Wood Duck Landscapes faces the challenge of finding not only enough skilled labor but also employees who are motivated and dedicated to their work.
“It’s not necessarily about getting people; it’s about finding the right people that have a good attitude,” Eike said. “That’s been our biggest challenge.”
One of the ways Wood Duck Landscapes has recruited and retained employees is with its equipment. The company invests in compact machines, like mini excavators and compact track loaders, that are comfortable for the operators who spend countless hours in them.
“To have great air conditioning, a comfortable seat and plenty of legroom really makes those longer days of operating that much more comfortable and more feasible for employees,” he said.
Embracing Technology
Social media is Eike’s go-to source for finding the latest landscaping trends. That’s where he came across a contractor named Matt Quinnell of Advanced Wall Structures in Minnesota and picked up some tips about attachments for compact equipment.
“They do a lot of boulder wall retaining work,” Eike said. “And we were faced with the same situation. We had a crew working with heavy granite boulders, so I was looking at what he was doing. The best solution for us was to find a really strong rotating grapple that is reliable and dependable.”
Eike purchased a rotating grapple attachment and a quick coupler, and he paired them with a DEVELON DX62R-7 mini-excavator from RTL Equipment.
“Previously, we used a bucket and thumb, like most other contractors do,” Eike said. “The biggest challenge for us in doing that is that we don’t have a lot of space to work or to
move the machine to get just the right angle we need. Having the rotating function allows us to stay stationery and grab boulders in place, eliminating the time wasted moving the machine to set each boulder.”
Wood Duck Landscapes has paired another DEVELON mini-excavator with a tiltrotator accessory, inspired by Advanced Wall Structures and the work the company does building retaining walls with boulders.
Productive Pair
It’s not uncommon in the landscaping industry for contractors to use both a mini-excavator and a compact track loader. Wood Duck Landscapes does the same for many of its projects due to confined job sites and the many times operators are moving materials in tight spaces.
Eike and his operators use mini-excavators and compact
Winter Work
Jack Eike and his Wood Duck Landscapes employees will continue working in winter as long as the ground doesn’t freeze. In recent years, that’s often not until January. Once cold weather halts the company’s landscaping work, Eike and his employees switch to snow removal. The company owns a DEVELON wheel loader and rents additional wheel loaders from the local dealer. They use their compact track loaders in tandem with the wheel loaders for commercial snow removal. The machines are paired with snow pushers or buckets to efficiently clear snow from parking lots.
Visibility can be difficult when clearing snow. Between blowing snow and frequent night work, it’s often hard for wheel loader operators to see clearly. Last winter, Eike rented a DEVELON wheel loader with the transparent bucket feature, which he said made a significant difference.
“I used the transparent bucket feature in snow removal, mainly to see when my front tires were coming up to either an obstacle, a curb or something that I couldn’t either hit or travel over,” Eike said. “It was definitely useful in those scenarios.”
track loaders in tandem to bring materials from their staging lot or roadside to the work area. Once at the area, the miniexcavators remove old landscaping products or excavate to install the new materials. As the excavator removes the material, the compact track loader loads it in the bucket and transports it out of the area. The compact track loader helps carry boulders to the area where the mini-excavator is positioned to lift, rotate and place the boulders on projects like shoreline repairs.
The tracked undercarriage of his compact track loaders is essential to the success of Wood Duck Landscapes.
“Having a tracked undercarriage for a compact loader is a night and day difference for our operation,” he said. “Living in Iowa, it rains a lot, and we have very soft and slick soils, and using wheeled machines [skid-steer loaders] cuts our ability to work by a significant amount versus having track machines. It allows us to get back to work sooner than a wheeled machine does.”
It’s probably no surprise that Eike has found other ways to generate other income. His latest endeavor is a company called Deluxe Docks and Lifts, offering high-quality docks and lifts, as well as a barge for installation and removal services.
“Deluxe Docks and Lifts furthers our vision of being one source for a total outdoor contractor,” Eike said.
Eike’s entrepreneurial spirit will likely lead to new endeavors along the way. Until then, work is already secured for months in advance as homeowners eagerly await new hardscape and landscape features.

Fabick Cat Tech Advances to Regionals in Cat Challenge
“Jack has not only demonstrated exceptional skill and expertise over the years with Fabick Cat, but he consistently exemplifies unwavering dedication and integrity.”
Fabick Cat announced that Jack, lead service technician of the company’s Madison, Wis., location, is heading to Cat’s Global Dealer Technician Challenge in Tucson, Ariz., this December. Jack is one of only 10 technician finalists from the entire western United States and Canada region heading to the next round of competition. He earned his spot at the regionals based on his advanced technical knowledge tested through a written assessment as well as a supplied video submission.
What Is CatÊs Global Dealer Technician Challenge?
Developed by Cat, this challenge was created to celebrate the essential role dealer technicians play in providing an excellent customer service experience. Designed to showcase how skilled technicians are part of a high-tech, high-impact, high-demand career, the competition also aims to raise awareness of the rising demand for technicians in the industry.
“This hands-on, skills-based competition will test the technicians’ agility, resilience and versatility,” said Henry Venneman, Caterpillar global service vice president. “These trained experts are on the front line of support, working to keep machines and engines up and running to help ensure our customers’ critical projects are completed.”
The Global Dealer Technician Challenge will take place over a series of regional and semifinal competitions around the world.
The Top 10 finalists will have the opportunity to compete in the finals in March 2026 at ConExpo-Con/AGG in Las Vegas.
How Did Fabick CatÊs Technician Get Chance to Compete?
Cat dealers from around the world were given the chance to nominate one technician. Jack was selected by Fabick Cat based on his recent achievement, earning the title of Fabick Cat’s Top Tech through an internal
dealership-led Tech Challenge completed in 2023.
“Jack has not only demonstrated exceptional skill and expertise over the years with Fabick Cat, but he consistently exemplifies unwavering dedication and integrity. I can confidently speak for the entire Fabick Cat team when I say that we are all incredibly proud to have Jack representing our organization. He embodies the values we hold dear teamwork, commitment, passion and a relentless pursuit of excellence,” said Mark Hanson, senior vice president of product support of Fabick Cat. “And in this next phase of Cat’s global competition, Jack’s professionalism, impeccable skill and true leadership will shine.”
The Fabick Cat team celebrated Jack’s recent achievement as the dealership’s Top Tech winner. And now he has given his more than 1,300 peers the opportunity to celebrate Fabick Cat and show their support as Jack travels to Tucson later this year.

Buyers Offers Straight Blade Plow for Half-Ton Pickup Trucks
Buyers Products released a straight blade plow specifically designed for use with most ½-ton and smaller pickup trucks. Much like the 2022 SnowDogg VMXII, the MXII snow plow has been structurally optimized to weigh less than 450 lbs., which allows the plow to be mounted on lighter trucks like the Ford F-150s, Chevrolet Silverado 1500s and RAM 1500s, as well as many SUVs and smaller trucks.
The SnowDogg MXII is an extension of SnowDogg’s rapidly growing straight blade plow line, which also includes the EXII for one-ton-plus pickup trucks and CMII for Class 4-6 trucks. Designed to move heavy, wet snow in a compact design, the plow features a genuine, 304 stainless-steel blade and a frame built to absorb heavy impacts. The MXII also incorporates popular SnowDogg features like an upgraded RapidLink Attachment System and Floating A-frame and will be available with the new SnowDogg Illuminator LP Low Profile LED Plow Lights.
“Customers loved the improved VMXII mounting system, so we wanted to incorporate that into a straight blade offering for 2024,” said Scott Moorman, director of snow and ice equipment at Buyers Products. “As these vehicles continue to get lighter in the front end, we will continue to look for ways to optimize weight while keeping the strength that the application demands.”
The SnowDogg MXII is in production at Buyers’ facility in northeast Ohio. It is available for the 2024/2025 winter season.
For more information, visit www.buyersproducts.com. The SnowDogg MXII is available for the 2024/2025 winter season.
Guidelines Prevent Damage During Snow, Ice Removal
Chemical deicers and snowplows are commonly used in winter to eliminate hazardous ice and snow from parking decks and structures.
While deicers are doing their job melting away snow and ice, some may actually be corroding the parking structure’s concrete and reinforcing steel, and some snow removal techniques may actually be doing more damage than good.
Western Specialty Contractors, experts in parking garage restoration and maintenance, offer several tips to minimize unnecessary damage to parking structures during the winter months, and keep drivers safe.
Snow Removal Tips
• Clearly mark expansion joints in a way that will be visible to the equipment operator when the deck is covered with snow.
• Establish a snow removal pattern so that the plow blade approaches expansion joints, control joints and tee to tee joints at an angle no greater than 75 degrees.
• Equip snowplow blades and bucket loaders with shoes or rubber guards that prevent direct contact with the deck surface.
• Do not pile snow on the deck surface. Piles of snow can exceed the rated load capacity and cause cracking in the concrete deck surface.
Deicing/Salting Tips
Using chemical deicers to control ice and snow buildup is common. However, these chemicals can have a negative effect on concrete and reinforcing steel and should be used sparingly. There are several different types of deicers on the market that can be used, however, only those approved by the American Concrete Institute are recommended.
• Sodium Chloride — (road salt, table salt) This is the most common used salt deicer. It has little effect on concrete, but promotes corrosion in reinforcing steel and other metals. Use of this type of deicer is NOT recommended.
Western Specialty Contractors photo
Western Specialty Contractors, experts in parking garage restoration and maintenance, offer several tips to minimize unnecessary damage to parking structures during the winter months, and keep drivers safe.
• Calcium Chloride — This is a major ingredient in most commercial deicers. It has little effect on concrete, but promotes corrosion in reinforcing steel and other metals. Use of this type of deicer is NOT recommended.
• Ammonium Nitrate or
Ammonium Sulfate — Use of this deicer will lead to serious concrete deterioration due to its direct chemical attack on reinforcing steel. Use of this type of deicer is NOT recommended.
• Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA)— The effects of this deicer
are similar to salt, but it requires more time to melt ice. It has no adverse effects on concrete or steel reinforcement. If a deicer is required, a CMA is recommended. It is important to minimize the amount of deicing chemical applied during the first two years of the concrete being installed. During this time, the concrete has an increased permeability which can allow the deicing chemicals to migrate into the concrete more rapidly. As concrete ages and cures, it will become less permeable and chemicals will not penetrate as easily.
It is important to remember that the use of deicing chemicals in general are not recommended. The safest way to remove ice and snow is to use a plow. Sand also can be used to increase tire traction on the deck, but be sure to protect the drainage system when washing down the deck after its use.

USDOT Unveils National V2X Deployment Strategy
COMMUNICATION from page 1
In August, the DOT unveiled its National V2X Deployment Plan, which the agency said sets the launch vision, goals and milestones for the next 12 years.
“Excitement is building around V2X,” said Egan Smith, managing director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) joint program office.
“As deployments become more widespread, we are going to see the safety benefits multiply,” he told DOT’s Public Highways magazine.
With the launch, DOT is calling on public agencies and private-sector stakeholders to take action on 12 specific interoperable deployments, all by 2036.
“Interoperability is the key,” Govind Vadakpat, the ITS JPO program manager of smart infrastructure told Public Highways. “Vehicles, devices and infrastructure all must … communicate … seamlessly across jurisdictional boundaries for V2X to reach its full potential.”
The FHWA has stepped up to advance interoperability. The agency is providing technical assistance and resources to V2X deployers, for one thing. It’s also working to resolve regulatory uncertainty, establishing a V2X peer group and identifying proven V2X applications.
Finally, FHWA is investing in research, development and deployment of V2X technology, according to the article.
More than 800 comments prove stakeholders support the draft deployment plan, many enthusiastic about its key features.
Citizens Band radio technology, first popular in the 1950s, continues to be a vital communication tool in the trucking and heavy transport sector.
It is an early example of “a ubiquitous communication system that was, and is, used both by citizens at home and … in any type of vehicle or boat,” said hackaday.com. “For truckers in particular it provides a means to obtain constant updates on road conditions [and for] truck-to-truck communications should the need arise.”
Car drivers, who connect and inform via smartphone technology, still want access to a communication network for crucial information, said hackaday. Cruise control and collision avoidance systems (CAS) monitor activity around the vehicle as well as potential traffic rule violations.
“The number and types of CAS and other forms of advanced driver-assistance systems [ADAS] in modern cars keep increasing,” said the publication.
Everything “from LIDAR and cameras to radar systems” prevent collisions, keep the car in the current lane and detect braking cars ahead. These systems also integrate data obtained via a data link on upcoming traffic
lights and other notable features long before they become visible.
“It raises the question of whether … V2X … would do more than standardize and expand upon much of the technology that is already out and about on the roads today,” said hackaday.com.
Titled Saving Lives with Connectivity, the deployment plan will guide DOT’s V2X implantation and the agency’s goal of zero highway fatalities. The plan was released in draft form about a year ago, detailing the technology that would enable vehicles and wireless devices to communicate.
“These technologies can enable a more safe, secure and efficient transportation system while maintaining privacy and consumer protection,” said DOT.
The agency also said that the technologies will contribute to the Safe System Approach adopted by the USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy. The Safe System Approach is a comprehensive plan launched in January 2022 to address the crisis of roadway deaths.
The national plan “has the power to save lives and transform the way we travel,” said Pete Buttigieg, secretary of transportation. “The department recognizes the potential safety benefits of V2X, and this plan will move us closer to nationwide adoption of this technology.”
Robert C. Hampshire, principal deputy assistant for research, said the plan was drafted in collaboration with pubic and private partnerships.
“The plan will accelerate investment, research and deployment in V2X ‘market certainty,’” he said.
And, Shailen Bhatt, FHWA administrator, said the plan provides a framework for the acceleration of V2X deployment. Along with the deployment, FHWA announced nearly $60 million in grants to three entities to promote deployment.
The goal is to advance V2X communication, ensuring connected technologies communicate securely without interference across a variety of devices and platforms.
The launch represents a “significant milestone,” said Laura Chace, Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS) president and CEO.
“USDOT’s enthusiastic support for V2X adoption provides clear guidance to stakeholders for continued V2X development, investment and deployment.”
In June, DOT awarded $60 million in grants in Arizona, Texas and Utah to advance connected and interoperable vehicle technologies. The awards are intended to serve as national models to accelerate and spur new deployments of V2X technologies.
Connected vehicle technology like V2X “has potential to make roads safer and save lives,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation
Pete Buttigieg in announcing the awards. “The grants we’re announcing today are helping accelerate the development and adoption of potentially life-saving V2X technology nationwide.”
“The funding … will help accelerate the technology so that we can deploy it on a national scale,” said Bhatt.
That in turn means the agency can “provide new tools to reduce deaths on our nation’s roads and highways,” he added.
In Arizona, the Maricopa County DOT will receive $19.6 million for largescale deployment of V2X technologies.
Arizona’s plan is to connect 750 physical and virtual roadside units to an estimated 400 vehicle onboard units targeting transit, emergency and freight fleets via emergency vehicle preemption, vulnerable road user (VRU) detection, transit signal priority and freight signal priority applications.
Those applications will be in Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale and unincorporated Maricopa County, as well as along ADOT’s U.S. 60.
Texas A&M Transportation Institute will receive $19.2 million to deploy in Houston, College Station and corridors connecting the two cities.
The project serves to enhance safety, efficiency and overall mobility for VRU at signalized intersections and traffic-navigating emergency responders It also serves transit operators seeking efficient routes, workers operating within construction zones and everyday motorists.
The Utah DOT will receive $20 million toward deployment sites in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Each state represents a broad variety of population densities, demographics, jurisdictions, topography and transportation facilities.
All of Utah, I-80 through Wyoming, and major portions of Colorado including Denver, I-70 to the Utah border, and I-25 through Colorado are included.
The applications focus on safety, mobility and environment and support the ability to demonstrate measurable impact. They address critical needs including connected intersection, weather impact, curve speed warning, traveler information, VRU and other safety technologies.
Wireless communication would transmit road and traffic conditions more directly and independent from signs near or on the road, reported hackaday.com.
The publication likened the technology to airplane transponders, saying it would give vehicles “awareness of where other traffic is hanging out.”
The V2X technology also would include communication regarding infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P) and vehicle-to-network (V2N).
“Is this the future of road traffic?” asked the article. “The DOT seems to think that its deployment will be a good thing” — except for tricky regulations.
“V2X has been stuck in regulatory hurdles,” noted the publication. “This may now change, with the DOT releasing a roadmap for its deployment.”
As ITS explains, V2X-enabled cars also would be able to communicate with V2Xenabled bicyclists and pedestrians with V2Xenabled devices on themselves or a bike.
“This would then communicate with the vehicle’s ADAS, ideally preventing collisions between the vehicle and these much squishier traffic participants,” said hackaday.
“These personal V2X devices could be integrated into smartphones at some point, for example.”
ITS’ deployment plan envisions V2Xenabled cars with 5.9 GHz-enabled radios communicating with roadside units (RSU). An exchange of relevant information would build upon the knowledge gained so far from cellular-V2X (C-V2X) trials, according to hackaday.
“The RSU would be placed at intersections, where it could eliminate many crashes.”
This while also providing the driver with information on when a traffic light will turn green and prevent the running of red lights. While it sounds wonderful on paper, said hackaday, there’s the chance that spoofed V2X messages will affect traffic or cause casualties it seeks to avoid.
The ITS cybersecurity research program wants trusted communications between vehicles, infrastructure and other parties in a V2X-enabled system.
“This would seem to involve some secure way to signing messages while guaranteeing some level of anonymity,” noted hackaday.
To avoid collision, “you only need to know where the vehicle, bike or pedestrian in question is roughly located before any onboard sensors can detect it.”
“If V2X wants to succeed, it should be implemented and handled in a way that works with … biases, rather than against them,” said the article. “If lives are saved due to V2X-enabled cars …then those are convincing arguments.”
The publication maintains that implementing V2X might be easier than self-driving cars. That’s because it doesn’t change or replace anything more than do ADAS features in today’s cars.
“It might even be quite realistic to retrofit V2X into existing vehicles, significantly promoting kinetic hesitancy in close traffic situations,” said hackaday.com
But the publication takes a cautious approach to the concept of V2X standardization: “We will have to wait and see what happens.” CEG
