MD 4 Project to Add Diamond Interchange

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MD SHA) continues work on a $283 million project to improve safety and mobility at the interchange of MD 4

(Pennsylvania Avenue) and MD 337 (Suitland Parkway) in the Upper Marlboro area of Prince George’s County.

The project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2028, weather permitting. It will provide enhanced traffic operations throughout the corridor with the construction of a new diverging dia-

mond interchange.

This improvement project will increase roadway capacity to meet existing demands, address safety concerns and provide room for future traffic growth.

Work began in March 2024, with $283 million

ECA Mourns Loss of Its Former President, Chairman

Alfred “Al” Roy Kern died Aug. 29, 2024, former president and chairman of Equipment Corporation of America, died peacefully at home in Ocean Ridge, Fla. He was 89.

Born in Pittsburgh on Nov. 30, 1934, to Leonard and Alice, Mr. Kern was a fifth-generation Pittsburgher whose great, great, great grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1850 to work in the Pittsburgh steel mills. He grew up in Sheraden [Pittsburgh] and earned a civil engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh, graduating magna cum laude. Upon graduating, Mr. Kern immediately enlisted in the Navy where he served as a lieutenant in the Civil Engineering Corps and was first stationed in Mayport Naval Base [Jacksonville, Fla.].

While in Mayport, he met his wife of 61 years, Iris Matthews. After three years in Mayport, he and Iris were transferred to Lualualei Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they started their family. After serving a six-year tour and experiencing a brief delay from discharging due to the Cuban Missile Crisis, Mr. Kern and his young family moved back to his native Pittsburgh [Moon Township] to work for his father, Leonard, in

his construction equipment distribution business, Equipment Corporation of America (ECA).

Mr. Kern was associated with ECA, based in Coraopolis, Pa., for close to 50 years. He helped grow the company into one of the largest and most respected foundation construction equipment distributors on the East Coast.

In his 35 years at the helm of ECA, his philosophy was “always take care of customers first” and he transitioned the compa-

ny’s product offerings, specializing in foundation and hoisting equipment. He further expanded the two locations (Pittsburgh and Philadelphia] to five by adding a full-service branch in the 1970s in Upper Marlboro, Md., [Washington, D.C.], later entering in a partnership with a related business in Taunton [Boston], Mass., and oversaw the purchase of Specialty Construction Equipment [now named ECA Canada] in Toronto in 1999, thus expanding ECA’s footprint. Today, ECA has 11 locations throughout North America.

Mr. Kern supported and was active in the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED), serving on AED’s board and numerous committees, and other trade associations including Deep Foundations Institute [DFI], the International Association of Foundation Drilling [ADSC] and the Western Pennsylvania Contractors Association. He also served as a district council leader and advisor to the Boy Scouts of America, was a member of the Masonic Temple and Kiwanis. A life-long Christian, Mr. Kern had belonged to Coraopolis United Methodist Church and, later, First Church of Boynton Beach.

Mr. Kern’s interests included reading novels and the Wall Street Journal, and he was an avid golfer, shooting his age at 74 and many times after that. He was a long-time member of Montour Heights Country Club [Moon Township, Pa.], Williams Country Club [Weirton, W. Va.], and finally, the Lost City Golf Club [Lantana, Fla.].

He was predeceased by his wife, Iris, and his son, Dennis (Loraine) of Mesa, Ariz. He is survived by his children, Roy (Lori) of Peters Twp, Pa.; and Tara (Pete) Rose of Peters Twp., Pa.; and also, by his six grandchildren, who knew and loved him as “Pepa:” Rod (Anna) and Darby Kern; Nolan and Brea Kern; and Jake and Ryan Rose. A Celebration of Life Services for family and friends will be planned for a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to:

Groff Tractor Holds Inaugural ‘Tee Off for a Cause’ in Pa.

Golfers gathered at the Bluestone Country Club in Blue Bell, Pa., Sept. 9, 2024, to help raise money for an important charity — Construction Angels. The 501(c) nonprofit organization provides immediate financial assistance and grief counseling to the spouse and children left behind when a construction worker is involved in a work-related fatality.

Groff Tractor & Equipment recently partnered with Construction Angels by becoming its Pennsylvania affiliate, leading to the inaugural “Tee Off for a Cause” golf classic. Money raised from the event through sponsorships, raffle prizes and the Beat-the-Pro competition totaled $118,000.

“Today is the inaugural Groff Tractor & Equipment golf tournament and they are the first to bring us to the state of Pennsylvania for the first sold-out golf tournament at Bluestone Country Club,” said Kristi Ronyak, CEO, founder and national director of Construction Angels. “Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will go to help families that have had a fatality, and the other 25 percent will help students for next year, either if they are trying to continue their education in construction or if they have lost a parent due to a job-related fatality. They can apply every year through our scholarship for anything they want.”

“This is a cause that’s very near and dear to our hearts and contractors,” said Mike Savastio, co-president and CEO of Groff Tractor & Equipment. “If you are in this business, whether it’s us on the dealer’s side or our customers, unfortunately, you are probably going to face this at some point. When we met Construction Angels through John Deere, we jumped on board and became the affiliate for Pennsylvania. The beauty is that all the money we raise here today stays in Pennsylvania, so it truly is for the benefit of people who live in Pennsylvania and work in Pennsylvania.”

As for the event, 27 groups of four competed and there was a three-way tie for first

place with James D. Morrissey Inc., Kriger Construction Inc. and Mid Penn Bank each scoring a 57 at 14 under par. The longest drive winner was Jesse Betts of Allan Myers Inc. and the closest to the pin winner was Tripp McKeon of Construction Equipment Guide.

Volvo CE Marks 50 Years of Manufacturing in Shippensburg

It’s been 50 years since workers began building heavy construction equipment at a plant in Shippensburg, Pa.

Back then, the site was owned by IngersollRand and employed about 50 people. Today, it’s the North American headquarters of Volvo Construction Equipment and employs more than 650 people.

Staff gathered to celebrate the milestone Sept. 12 in conjunction with a visit from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers “AEM Manufacturing Express” bus tour. Festivities included a cookout, yard games and sharing stories from the last five decades.

“We have heavily invested in our facilities, our people and our services here in Shippensburg. The work done at this site has a significant impact on our customers, our industry and the local community,” said Gustavo Casagrandi, head of operations at the site. “It’s rewarding to gather today to reflect on all of that.”

Combining this celebration with AEM’s visit was natural.

Shippensburg Site History

1974: Construction equipment production begins with compaction products.

1980: A 46,000-sq.-ft. expansion upgrades machining, fabrication and welding capabilities.

1988: A 38,000-sq.-ft. expansion boosts assembly space.

1992: A 54,000-sq.-ft. expansion adds to assembly space again.

1993: The 49,000-sq.-ft. main office is built.

1998: A 21,000-sq.-ft. expansion provides more space for drum manufacturing.

2007: Volvo CE acquires the site from Ingersoll-Rand.

2010: A $30 million, 200,000-sq.-ft. factory expansion is completed.

2011: The Region Americas sales and marketing team relocates to the site.

2013: The wheel loader production line begins operation.

2013: A new office expansion is inaugurated.

2014: The Volvo Customer Experience Center opens.

2023: The Technical Training Center opens.

2024: Volvo and AEM celebrate 50 years of equipment manufacturing in Shippensburg.

“We’re proud AEM members, so this is a great way to celebrate our employees’ contributions to the construction and manufacturing industries,” said Casagrandi.

The “AEM Manufacturing Express” is an interactive mobile tour visiting 80 member manufacturers across 20 states. It’s the largest public engagement initiative in the association’s history, designed to celebrate the U.S. equipment manufacturing industry and the 2.3 million workers who help “build, power and feed the world.”

“We’re thrilled to be part of this 50th anniversary celebration alongside community leaders and supporters,” said Megan Tanel, president of AEM. “This tour has been an amazing opportunity to tell the stories of the people of our industry.”

The AEM and Volvo teams invited local policymakers to the event to raise awareness of and support for bipartisan policies that support the equipment manufacturing industry and its employees.

Five Decades of Manufacturing in Shippensburg

Over the past 50 years, roadbuilding and general-purpose construction equipment has been manufactured at the Shippensburg factory beginning with compactors, which have remained a focus.

Proximity to Interstate 81 — a major manufacturing and distribution corridor — and a highly skilled employee base made the area appealing to Volvo Group, which acquired the site in 2007 as part of its purchase of the road development division of Ingersoll-Rand.

Volvo has made significant investments in the site over the past 17 years, including a $30 million, 200,000-sq.-ft. expansion of its operations footprint in 2010. In addition to the production of wheel loaders, soil compactors and asphalt compactors, operations at the location include a regional excavator completion center and a rebuild center for used equipment. The site is the North American headquarters for sales and marketing, a hub for purchasing and supply management, and the design and engineering center for compaction equipment.

The Volvo Customer Experience Center and 40-acre proving grounds opened in 2014, housing a demonstration fleet of more than 70 pieces of equipment spanning the company’s full product portfolio. In 2023, a Technical Training Center wing added machine servicing bays and classrooms where dealer technicians and sales teams can learn about Volvo’s latest machines and technologies, including electric equipment. The venue hosts more than 10,000 Volvo CE dealers and customers annually.

Volvo CE collaborates with the Franklin County Career & Technology Center on a training program for industrial workers and has partnered with Shippensburg University to support a new engineering program. The company employs about 50 interns each year, and Penn State University is an Academic Preferred Partner of the Volvo Group. Volvo CE also works with the National and Pennsylvania chapters of SkillsUSA to support middle

At the event, Takeuchi-US also celebrated the production of its 10,000th compact track loader, a TL12 model, at the Moore facility, which opened in September 2022.

Takeuchi’s employees signed the interior of the TL12’s rear cover, and soon, this unique, one-of-a-kind 10,000th machine will be delivered to a Takeuchi customer.

Congressman William Timmons, 4th District, South Carolina spoke at the event, noting the importance of manufacturing in Spartanburg County and thanking Takeuchi-US for putting its faith in the Moore community by locating its compact track loader production facility there two years ago.

Several other dignitaries also were on hand for the festivities, including:

• David Britt, Spartanburg (SC) County council vicechairman

• Allen Smith, president and CEO, OneSpartanburg Inc.

• Kyle Sox, VP of Industrial Development, OneSpartanburg Inc.

• Katherine O’Neill, chief economic development officer, OneSpartanburg Inc.

• Dwayne Hatchett, director of existing industries, OneSpartanburg Inc.

• Cole Alverson, administrator, Spartanburg County

• Carter Smith, advisor, OneSpartanburg Inc.

“As proud AEM members, we believe in the importance of American manufacturing, and we were pleased to host the AEM Manufacturing Express tour,” said Jeff Stewart, president of Takeuchi-US. “We enjoyed celebrating our employees and the Moore community while highlighting our contributions to the local, regional and national economies.

“We’ve only been open for business in Moore for two years, but we’ve already manufactured 10,000 machines and now employ more than 150 people here. We thank our local policymakers for joining us at this celebration and learning more about how we’re helping drive innovation and eco-

nomic growth in this region.”

Born on Sept. 23, 1955, and raised in Gladwyne, Pa., Mr. Holleran was a larger-than-life presence who brought joy, laughter and love to everyone who knew him.

A graduate and three-sport varsity athlete at Episcopal Academy and an attendee of the University of Dayton, Mr. Holleran went on to build a successful career in the specialized heavy construction equipment industry. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own business, Machinery Services Inc., where he combined his sharp business acumen with a lifelong interest in earth-moving equipment. He also was past president of the Delaware Valley Associated Equipment Dealers (DVAED).

Mr. Holleran’s passions extended well beyond his professional achievements. He was an avid golfer, a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and a lover of good music, craft beer and comedy. He was happiest when surrounded by friends and family, whether they were traveling, sharing a laugh or simply watching sports together. He was always the

life of the party.

Known for his mischievous sense of humor, his generosity and his charismatic personality, he touched many lives. He had a remarkable athletic ability and while he “never considered himself an academic,” he was an avid reader with a keen interest in American history. His caring nature combined with his sharp business instincts and charming demeanor will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He was a devoted husband to Kathy Jo Holleran and a loving father to his two children, Gerald Holleran III and Joanna Holleran. He was the proud brother of James Holleran and Sheila O’Neil and was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Sr. and Rosemary Hayden. His extended family, Aunt Joan and Uncle Tom Hayden, and their children, and Aunt Barbara Kearns held a special place in his heart.

A devout Catholic, Mr. Holleran was a longstanding member of St. Elizabeth’s Church, where his faith played a central role in his life.

Slow, Steady Progress Repairing America’s Bridges, According to Data

Nearly 221,800 U.S. bridges need major repair or replacement, an American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) analysis of recently released federal government data shows.

Placed end-to-end, these structures span more than 6,100 mi., or the equivalent of every mile of urban and rural interstate in California, Florida and Illinois.

Of the bridges needing repair, 42,067 are rated in poor condition and classified as “structurally deficient.” That is 324 fewer than in 2023.

States with the biggest decline in the number of bridges in poor condition: Pennsylvania (down 90), Louisiana (down 87), Florida (down 85), West Virginia (down 74) and California (down 64).

Bridges in poor condition represent 6.8 percent of the 2024 U.S. bridge inventory — compared to 7.3 percent in 2020.

“Over the last five years we have seen significant progress in states like Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Louisiana and West Virginia — reducing the number of bridges in poor condition,” said Alison Premo Black, ARTBA’s chief economist who conducted the analysis.

“While improvements can take time, every bridge repair increases the safety and effi-

ciency of our network for the traveling public.”

States have received $15.9 billion in the first three years of the IIJA’s new $27.5 billion formula bridge program and, to date, have committed 46 percent ($7.3 billion) of these resources to over 4,170 bridge projects.

The remaining 54 percent ($8.5 billion) of already released bridge funds — plus the $10.6 billion that will be provided in the next two years — will support needed bridge improvements well into the future.

• I-680 over Capitol Avenue, California

• I-55 over Madison Street, Illinois

• I-95 over Route 608, Virginia

Based on average cost data submitted by states to the U.S. Department of Transportation, ARTBA estimates it would cost more than $400 billion to make all needed repairs to the 221,800 structures.

“While improvements can take time, every bridge repair increases the safety and efficiency of our network.”

Twenty-three states have committed at least half of their available bridge formula funds, with the top 10 being: Georgia (100 percent), North Dakota (99 percent), Indiana (98 percent), Florida (96 percent), Oklahoma (95 percent), Nebraska (91.5 percent), Idaho (91.5 percent), Arkansas (88 percent), West Virginia (85 percent) and Alabama (85 percent).

Bridges that have come off the “poor condition” list include:

• I-695 over U.S. 40, Maryland

• I-93 over Conley Street, Massachusetts

Alison Premo Black American Road & Transportation Builders Association

Bridges newly rated in poor condition include:

• I-90 over Canal to Stewart Streets, Illinois

• Interstate 680 over Monument Boulevard, California

• I-93 over Mystic Valley Parkway, Massachusetts

• I-95 North and Southbound over Thurbers Avenue, Rhode Island

• IH-35 over Grand Avenue, Texas

About Report

The data in the report is from the Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory (NBI), downloaded on Aug. 20. Specific conditions on bridges may have changed because of recent work or updated inspections.

Bridges are classified in good, fair or poor condition based on their inspection ratings and definitions from U.S. DOT.

The definition of “poor” is when a key element of the bridge — the deck, superstructure, substructure or culverts, are rated in poor or worse condition. During inspection, the conditions of a variety of bridge elements are rated on a scale of 0 (failed condition) to 9 (excellent condition). A rating of 4 is considered “poor” condition.

MD SHA Expects to Complete MD4 Project By Fall 2028

allotted for construction and $20.5 million for engineering. The total also includes Infrastructure Investment Jobs Act (IIJA) funding.

The contract was awarded to Concrete General Inc. of Gaithersburg under Project Manager Bob Rosencrance.

“The project is necessary to improve safety and relieve existing congestion and accommodate increasing traffic volumes associated with local future growth,” said Shantee Felix, media relations manager.

In addition to the new diverging diamond interchange, the project includes:

• Realigning the Pennsylvania Avenue Service Road and Armstrong Lane;

• Reconstructing on- and off-ramps to Joint Base Andrews;

• Constructing a new signalized intersection at Presidential Parkway and Central Park Drive, along with new sidewalks;

• Constructing a new two-lane ramp over MD 4 to provide a direct connection between northbound MD 4 and westbound Suitland Parkway;

• Adding a new shared-use path across the Suitland Parkway bridge;

• Constructing four new bridges;

• Realigning Presidential Parkway with Suitland Parkway; and

• Realigning and widening MD 4.

“The new interchange at MD 4 and Suitland Parkway is critical for residents and commuters, and will accommodate economic growth throughout the region,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “The project will improve mobility and accessibility, and advances our mission to deliver a comprehensive, world-class transportation system for all.”

Proposed construction hhases are:

Phase 1 (current): Drainage upgrades will be made to existing stormwater facilities. Presidential Parkway at the Service Road will be extended to Central Park Drive. Median adjustments will be made for a new intersection. Armstrong Lane and the Pennsylvania Avenue Service Road will be detoured to MD 4 and Central Park Drive. A new Service Road will be constructed west of the existing road to connect to Presidential Parkway.

Phase 2: A temporary alignment of MD 4 northbound and southbound will be constructed. Central Park Drive at MD 4 and Presidential Parkway will be closed. Traffic will be detoured along Presidential Parkway and the new Service Road from MD 4. Old Marlboro Pike at Suitland Parkway will be closed for future ramp construction.

Phase 2a: Suitland Parkway eastbound to MD 4 northbound will be detoured to allow for new ramp construction. MD 4 northbound shoulder closures will begin at Dower House Road to allow for temporary alignment of MD 4.

Phase 3: Primary structures work will begin. MD 4 northbound and southbound will be relocated east into a temporary alignment to facilitate the lowering of MD 4 and the completion of the new Suitland Parkway bridge.

Phase 4: A newly constructed Suitland Parkway bridge will open to westbound traffic. Eastbound, the bridge will be widened to accommodate ongoing ramp construction.

Phase 5: Structures work will continue as MD 4 southbound is transitioned to the new roadway under the Suitland Parkway bridge. MD 4 northbound will remain in temporary

Numerous Jurisdictions Make MD 4 Project Challenging

alignment.

Phase 6: MD 4 northbound and southbound will shift to permanent configuration. Final ramp work for the interchange will be completed with traffic signals. Shared use path across Suitland Parkway bridge will be complete for pedestrian access.

Felix said that one of the challenges involves the number of stakeholders and jurisdictions surrounding the project.

In addition, she noted high ground water levels and compressible soils; maintaining traffic and access to facilities during construction; state-supplied materials for some previously started work that needed to be completed; and height restrictions with the adjacent Air Force Base.

“Additionally, there were time of year restrictions as the project began, so we had to clear trees for the work areas to be accessible within the first month and a half,” Felix said. “That was a change of plans and partnering adjustment on day one.”

She also spoke about what makes the project unique from others.

“This project has a history of delay concerns and it is very schedule-driven to be successful,” Felix said. “The many stakeholders and political history have the project in the spotlight as well as it being in an urban area.”

She added that work assignments vary based on scope and locations of work to be performed at a given time.

“There will be hundreds of hands that have been a part of this project from conception in the 1970s to where we are now,” Felix said. “That also makes it challenging. Coordination efforts of staff become critical for success and project management when it comes to cost, schedule and quality optimizations.”

For erosion and sediment installation, stormwater management installation, subsurface drainage work and rough

grading earthwork in phase 1 of 6, field staff of the state and contractors numbered around 25 people plus an administration staff on both sides and teams of designers.

“We all have our eyes on subsurface drainage concerns, as we have known groundwater 5 feet below existing grade and have a 25-foot mainline cut to perform to lower the road,” Felix said. “We have stringent dewatering practices to maintain throughout the process. We have concerns for settlement of upwards of 9 inches in locations warranting wick drains and permeable low density cellular concrete [PLDCC] to accelerate settlement timelines. There are two dam permits for the two sediment basins that get converted into ponds.”

Felix added that the project has a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise goal of 24 percent, featuring players that have been a part of the work before and looking ahead as new teammates.

Major subcontractors include Interlock for the structural steel; DRM for shear studs; Priority for concrete flatwork; Site Services for E&S controls; Road Safety for temporary signage; Midlantic Markings for pavement markings; TSI

for electrical and ITS; Aarons for excavation and hauling; Kelley’s Trucking for hauling; Holcim for paving; Wolff for tree clearing; Collision for guardrail and permanent signage; WF Wilson for waterline work; Road Safe for guardrails; Keller for Wick Drains; Hunt Valley for concrete decorative staining and painting; and Concrete General for structures and drainage.

“Various cranes will be mobilized when we get to sheeting and structures work and are FAA height restricted with the adjacent Air Force Base,” Felix said. “A lot of the work will be done with typical dozers, loaders, excavators, graders, rollers, pavers, etc., which are mostly owned.”

Keller also will also use a wick drain stitcher.

The project includes five bridges with two cast-in-place retaining walls. There will be 4.6 mi. of RCP storm drain to install and another half mile of plastic pipe.

The project will include 119,665 linear ft. of steel piles; 7,182 linear ft. of steel girders; 1,364,062 linear ft. of wick drains; and 808,628 cu. yds. of excavated soils.  CEG

The project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2028, weather permitting.

AEM Visits LeeBoy as Paver Maker Marks 60th Anniversary

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) stopped by the North Carolina production plant of LeeBoy Aug. 29, 2024, as part of the trade association’s Manufacturing Express bus tour.

Throughout the summer, the goal of the AEM Manufacturing Express initiative was to recognize and celebrate the industry by making 80 visits across 20 states. The tour also highlights the innovative technologies, processes, people, and products that are revolutionizing the U.S. manufacturing sector.

“Equipment manufacturers are the backbone of America, representing $2.3 million employees,” Kip Eideberg, AEM’s senior vice president, said in a recent news release.

“In North Carolina alone, our industry contributes 87,031 jobs and $11.3 billion to the state economy. The AEM Manufacturing Express is thrilled to be in North Carolina to celebrate the critical role of the state’s equipment manufacturers in building, pow-

ering, and feeding our nation.”

During its stop at LeeBoy’s Lincolnton factory, AEM also feted the company and its employees’ contributions at a time when the construction equipment maker is celebrating its 60th anniversary in business.

In addition, the AEM event, noted LeeBoy President Shannon Seymour, allows “us to let our associates get to know what AEM does for LeeBoy and showcase the company.”

Seymour added that AEM is made up of more than 1,000 member companies and approximately 2.3 million associates.

“It provides various resources for member companies such as data, market share analysis, and educational materials,” he said. “AEM is also very well tied into Washington and lobbies on our behalf to make sure that American manufacturing companies stay strong and remain a backbone of this country.”

LeeBoy Turns 60, Adds Several Upgrades to Product Lineup

LEEBOY from page 41

For example, AEM often helps arrange for politicians to make stops on the factory floors of its member companies as a show of their encouragement and support.

In LeeBoy’s case, Seymour said that Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s current lieutenant governor and the Republican candidate for governor in November’s election, visited the Lincolnton plant in 2023. In addition, Pat Harrigan, a Republican running for the U.S. House to represent the state’s 10th congressional district, made a campaign stop at LeeBoy several months ago.

The manufacturing company has its origins in the Charlotte garage of LeeBoy’s late founder, B.R. Lee, who began making pavers there in 1964. Since then, the equipment maker has moved to a large, 33-acre production site in Lincolnton, northwest of Charlotte, where it produces a range of commercial paving equipment and machines, including pavers, motor graders, distributor trucks and brooms.

Over the past couple of years, Seymour said that LeeBoy also has introduced several new upgrades to its product lineup.

“The most notable improvements have been our electric products, which we brought out slightly more than a year ago,” he said. “Not only did we make the first commercial class electric asphalt paver, but we also introduced the first electric broom. And LeeBoy is about to get back into distributing rollers. In fact, we have rollers available for order at the present time and will begin delivering them in January.”

Plans call for the equipment manufacturer to create a 1.25-ton, 36-in.-wide roller, as well as a 3-ton model with a 48-in. width, and more models to come.

“LeeBoy will also begin selling and marketing soil rollers too, as well as rubber-tire machines,” he said. “This is a good opportunity for us because we believe LeeBoy is the only paver manufacturer that does not currently sell rollers. We did so up until a few years ago and are happy to re-start their distribution.”

The company has managed to remain among the market leaders in the commercial

class paving equipment business, Seymour said, because LeeBoy has long realized “it is about connecting with and listening to our customers, understanding how they use the equipment, and constantly refining the equipment for more efficient usage.

“Quality and reliability are also an enormous factor – how we keep these pavers running for our customers,” he added. “Uptime is everything for them.”

Seymour noted that LeeBoy’s nationwide distributor network is seen as being “the front line” in terms of contact with the end customers.

“The dealerships that have great service departments and rapidly react to any potential repair issues that arise in the field are the ones that make a difference in the marketplace,” he said.

For its part, LeeBoy itself has proven to be outstanding at supplying parts to its dealers overnight or as needed, something that the equipment maker has prioritized to improve efficiency, according to LeeBoy.

With a warehouse built to be shared by both its production and parts departments, Seymour believes that LeeBoy has created an advantage for itself by having its entire operation under one roof.

“Let’s say we need a wiring harness for a 20-year-old machine. We just make it in this factory,” he said. “Or, if a weldment is required, we can run out to the weld cells and get that done quickly. That capability really helps us get service and parts needs turned around in a hurry.”

Dynapac Introduces Seismic Technology for Asphalt Compaction at WOA 2024

At World of Asphalt, Dynapac introduced its Seismic technology for asphalt compaction.

The intelligent Seismic Asphalt system improves compaction performance significantly compared to conventional compaction carried out at a fixed frequency, according to the manufacturer.

Seismic Asphalt automatically detects the optimum compaction frequency and continuously adjusts it accordingly. Due to the Seismic Asphalt system, Dynapac can offer an increase in efficiency and lower cost of ownership from fuel savings and less wear-and-tear on the roller.

By compacting at the natural frequency of the asphalt mat, Seismic Asphalt avoids double-jumping of the drum and losing any compaction effort.

Traditional double drum vibratory rollers deliver a rapid succession of impacts to the surface at a frequency that is either pre-set at a high or low amplitude or at a frequency that is adjusted manually. Seismic Asphalt from Dynapac does it differently. Since the drums and the material act

as one dynamic system, several benefits can be found from the system’s natural resonance frequency. By compacting at the natural frequency of the asphalt mat, Seismic Asphalt avoids double-jumping of the drum and losing any compaction effort.

Seismic Asphalt automatically determines the optimal drum vibration frequency for the compacted material, constantly monitors the variations of the asphalt layer, and automatically adjusts to changing temperature conditions. The operator no longer has to manually set the frequency or guess what asphalt material type or frequency should be used at any given time. By using the pre-set on the speed limiter, a constant speed and optimal compaction is ensured, thus allowing the operator to focus on meeting the compaction requirements.

Dynapac’s well-renowned tools such as Dynapac Compaction Meter and Dyn@lyzer ensure that these requirements are met. It will be a standard feature for the CC2200VI-CC6200VI and the CO2200VI-CO6200VI roller ranges. For more information, visit https://dynapac.com/us-en/. 

BY THE TRUCKLOAD. HAULING IN PROFITS

Save time and save money with powerful and efficient Volvo articulated haulers. These machines are durable and reliable, built to operate in tough terrain with incredible fuel efficiency that helps save on your bottom line. Haul in more profit when you haul with Volvo.

Rokbak Celebrates Three Years of High-Quality Hauling, Positive Growth

September 2021 was a notable month. Cristiano Ronaldo became the all-time leading goal scorer for men’s national football teams. SpaceX launched the first all-civilian spaceflight. And the U.S. recorded its lowest-ever levels of people living in poverty.

But in Motherwell, Scotland, the celebrations were centered around something altogether more groundbreaking: the launch of the Rokbak brand.

Since rebranding three years ago, the Scottish articulated

hauler manufacturer has carved out a unique identity based around robust and reliable products, an unwavering commitment to customers and an instantly recognizable brand.

“We had a solid product line at the time of launch, but introducing any new brand has an element of risk,” said Jacqueline Reid, Rokbak head of marketing, communications and product management.

“However, we had great support from Volvo Group and a clear understanding of who we are and what we stand for, so we were able to create something that perfectly encapsulates our company, our people and our products. And since we launched our customer focus areas, we’ve been able to evolve that even further.”

Brand Startup

Launching the Rokbak brand proved a huge success and led to five accolades at the Marketing Society Star Awards 2022. The company has gone on to become a leading name in articulated dump trucks in just three years, with its distinctive machines delivering productive and profitable performance to customers worldwide, in demanding applications such as construction, quarrying and mining.

“We set out to create something that not only we could be proud of but that others would be proud to represent,” added Robert Franklin, director of sales of the Americas. “Three years later, we have a strong brand, a strong team and a

Rokbak Not Only Reached, But Exceeded Pre-Launch Goals

Since its launch in September 2021, Rokbak articulated haulers have made their mark worldwide.

ROKBAK from page 60

growing dealer network, all with a positive outlook on the future.”

In fact, North America has been one of the biggest success stories for Rokbak. It was here that the company’s first machines were delivered in 2021, with a pair of RA30s sold to earthmoving, utility and clearing company Linco Construction of Houston, Texas, via Easton Sales and Rentals.

Since then, both RA30 and RA40 models have provided excellent performance in all hauling conditions to customers around the world. From muddy terrain to slippery slopes, from scorching heat to sub-zero conditions, these trucks are moving earth and materials in the UK, Ireland, France and Germany, and on to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand.

“We’re proud of the market image and enthusiasm generated by the Rokbak brand,” said Scott Pollock, senior product manager. “Our team members and external partners embraced the opportunities it presented, fostering stronger relationships and delivering a more solidified market presence.”

Setting Itself Apart

Rokbak’s success is rooted in its commitment to customers, which emphasizes close collaboration with dealers and building personal partnerships with end users and owners. This strategy has been a cornerstone of Rokbak’s growth, with its dealer network expanding as the brand’s reputation continues to grow and customer satisfaction increases.

“We’re fortunate to benefit from strong word-of-mouth referrals and have a wide range of customers and dealers who have a positive view of Rokbak,” said Franklin. “We’ve had several third-party approaches to work with us due to this. We have a different approach to others, and customers have confidence that their dealer has solid support from the OEM.”

Rokbak’s culture of openness extends to its Motherwell facility where it regularly welcomes dealers, customers and operators to tour the factory, take a training session or catch up with colleagues.

ÂBak to the Future

Ambitious goals were set for Rokbak prior to its launch, which the company has not only met, but exceeded, including in sustainability, as Reid explained:

“Rokbak has introduced clearer communications and built a stronger dealer network. We’ve also improved our product sustainability through reduced fuel consumption and adapting to alternative fuels such as HVO. We’re increasing the time between maintenance intervals, to keep uptime high and reduce material disposal to further reduce our impact on the environment.

“It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in three years. We have the tools and the people to prepare us for future growth too. We’re always moving forward, and already looking forward to the next three years.”

KAGE Innovation Raises Bar On Midsize Snow Pushers

KAGE Innovation has built its reputation around snow removal products that are overbuilt by design yet simple to operate and maintain. Its latest snow pusher exemplifies that perfectly, according to the manufacturer.

The SnowStorm BLAST is a fixed-side snow pusher with safety and performance features to spare.

Member of SnowStorm Family

A part of the SnowStorm plow series, the BLAST utilizes the moldboard technology of the KAGE 2-in-1 SnowStorm snow plow and pusher system.

A part of the SnowStorm plow series, the BLAST utilizes the moldboard technology of the KAGE 2-in-1 SnowStorm snow plow and pusher system — for 15,000 to 30,000 lb. loaders and 100-plus horsepower tractors — and replaced the angle plowing and 2-in-1 function with a hydraulic free, entry level pricing option that includes extra float and a 3-in-1 connect feature.

Without hydraulic hoses, there is one less thing for operators to worry about breaking on those long, late nights of clearing snow.

tures that make the SnowStorm plows stand at the top of their class including:

Durable Contouring Technology

touring cutting edge, the AdvantEdge, the SnowStorm BLAST mimics the performance of a sectional snow

AdvantEdge sectional cutting edge also increases the lifespan of the cutting edge up to 20x that of a standard high carbon steel cutting edge as the spring-loaded sections control down pressure and the material of the cutting edge sections are made of harder and more wear resistant Hardox steel or Carbide materials, according to the man-

KAGE replaced the fixed poly skid that are standard on its 2in-1 system version of the SnowStorm plow with floating and oscillating poly skids on the BLAST. This means,

in contact with the substrate even when pushing snow over curbs, if the box were tipped too far forward or backward, or if the cutting edge were worn down. This also helps project the plow, machine, driver and infrastructure from excessive damage upon impact with hidden obstacles.

Equipment Friendly

With the 3-in-1 connect feature, there should be no reason you can’t attach your appropriately sized machine to your SnowStorm BLAST as it is compatible with category II 3-point hitches and loaders with quick attaches — such as JRB416, Cat, etc. — or clamps directly to your loader bucket.

Easy Maintenance, Repair

Even maintenance and repair is easy on the SnowStorm BLAST. Release the pressure on the floating skids with an easy access leaf spring tension lever. Nearly everything is bolt on, including the side panels, so most repairs can be done quickly and easily compared to welded parts.

Equip Exposition Names Meecha New Show Director

Equip Exposition, the international landscape, outdoor living and equipment exposition, has announced Chris Meecha will become its new show director effective Sept. 16.

Meecha, currently general manager of Fern Expo in Louisville, joins the show three years into its rebranding and continued expansion under the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute’s (OPEI) full ownership and management.

In launching the new Equip in 2022, new attendance and exhibitor records were set. More than a million square feet of exhibit space and 30 acres in the Outdoor Demo Yard were booked out, with the show attracting 27,000 attendees in 2023.

“Chris is well known in the show management world as a leader and innovator, and will help take Equip to the next level,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of OPEI, which owns and manages the trade show. “We’re building a world-class event, and it was the perfect time to have him join the team, three years into Equip’s rebranding.”

Meecha spent 14 years at Fern, one of the country’s leading trade show and exposition service providers. He served as general manager of the firm’s Louisville office, which is one of its principal locations. He brings with him 30 years of trade show industry experience and served as a show director before joining Fern.

According to Kiser, hiring Meecha is all part of the evolution of the award-winning show, which received two Grand Awards in Trade Show Executive’s Gold 100 Awards program: “Most Innovative Show” and the “Slam Dunk Award: Best New Idea.” The show has been nominated for three more Gold 100 awards in 2024.

With more than 1.2 million square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibit space, Equip Exposition is one of the largest trade shows in the United States, bringing in more than $25 million annually to Louisville. For more information, visit www.EquipExposition.com. 

Bobcat to Debut Several New Machines, Product Innovations at Equip Expo 2024

Bobcat Company will showcase several new and recently introduced grounds maintenance and turf renovation machines at Equip Expo.

Equip Expo attendees will have the unique opportunity to experience the Bobcat T7X, the world’s first all-electric compact track loader, according to Bobcat. While the machine has been on display at prior trade shows, this will be the first time attendees can operate the loader as part of Bobcat’s exhibit. The T7X is commercially available at select Bobcat dealerships and available to rent through certain Sunbelt Rental locations.

New Utility Tractors On Display

Introduced in June 2024, Bobcat’s utility tractor lineup (UT6066, UT6566, UT6573) offers a competitive advantage for hauling, digging, raking, scraping and more. Bobcat will display its UT6573 at this year’s show.

Bobcat utility tractors feature 12x12 powershuttle transmissions that deliver smooth shifting without stepping on a clutch pedal, according to Bobcat. Powered by turbocharged, Tier IV diesel engines, these tractors offer robust performance with low-end torque, plus an efficient fuel system. The tractors offer easy service access and simple maintenance, as well as reduced noise and vibration for more comfortable driving.

The climate-controlled cab, which comes standard on the UT6566 and UT6573, provides year-round comfort. The utility tractors also feature wide glass panels on models with cabs, convenient visibility to the three-point hitch, power and tilt steering, and ergonomic controls that enhance operator performance and minimize fatigue.

Bobcat Turf Renovation Equipment

Bobcat turf renovation equipment includes aerators, sod cutters, dethatchers and overseeders that serve landscaping and grounds care professionals across a variety of industries including golf, sports turf, landscaping and rental. These turf renovation products officially joined the Bobcat brand in early 2024 following a brand transition from RYAN. The SC18H sod cutter, AE19 aerator, AE30S aerator, DT18 walk-behind dethatcher and verticutter will be on display at Bobcat’s indoor booth.

ZT5000 Zero-Turn Mower

The Bobcat ZT5000 is a high-performing, turf-taming machine designed to tackle challenging mowing tasks with precision and ease, according to Bobcat. It is equipped with an AirFX cutting system with a deep, bullnose-deck design that increases vacuum, lifting grass to the blade for a superior cut while the bolt-on, air-gap baffle technology accelerates under deck airflow for a professional finish. The ZT5000 is available with two cutting deck sizes: a 52-inch or 61-inch deck.

The Bobcat AT450 articulating tractor is a four-season machine that excels at material handling, turf maintenance, slope mowing and snow removal, and is an ideal solution for landscapers, hobby farmers, golf course groundskeepers and sports facility professionals, according to Bobcat. The tractor’s articulating and oscillating frame keeps all four wheels in contact with the ground — even on rough, uneven terrain — helping with stability and limiting turf disturbance.

The Bobcat booths will highlight an array of other products including compact tractors; light compaction; small articulated loaders; compact track loaders; compact excavators; portable power equipment; utility vehicles; and walkbehind, stand-on and zero-turn mowers. Bobcat will also show its ZT6000e electric zero-turn mower and its ZT6200 autonomous mower prototype. Yanmar Compact Equipment Launches TL80VS CTL

Yanmar Compact Equipment launched the TL80VS compact track loader as part of its new line of compact track loaders. The TL80VS excels in several segments, including construction, utility and rental. The vertical-lift unit provides performance similar to machines with 10 to 20 more hp. It’s equipped with a variety of features, including an impressive lift height and high-flow attachment capabilities. The machine offers Yanmar’s signature reliability and performance, ease of use and efficiency.

“We engineered the TL80VS to give the market a compact, maneuverable machine with performance that punches above its weight class,” said Peter Ovrebo, product management director — North America, Yanmar Compact Equipment North America. “This machine’s capability provides similar performance to larger machines while maintaining the agility of a more compact unit.”

Performance

The 9,610-lb. TL80VS is a construction-grade machine with excellent durability. A 2,900-lb. rated operating capacity and 74-hp Yanmar Tier IV Final diesel engine offers superior performance and productivity to maximize ROI. A 10-ft., 6.5-in. max bucket pin height improves the TL80VS’ ability to load dirt into trucks and thrive in other at-height tasks, according to the company. Users can navigate the jobsite with a top travel speed of 8 mph.

The TL80VS offers premium performance and operator comfort with a torsion axle suspended undercarriage featuring a pivot link system at the rear axle. The linkage technology uses a spring load that reduces oscillation and stabilizes the machine for improved ride quality and material retention. Additionally, the TL80VS can be optioned with a 34.3-gpm high flow with performance maximized by large line sizes, hydraulic coolers and direct-drive pumps for reduced power loss and increased flow and pressure directly to the attachment.

According to Yanmar, operators can work longer in comfort with the machine’s standard mechanical suspended seat

and a 7-in. touchscreen display improves convenience on the job. Premium 360-degree visibility enhances jobsite awareness and safety, improved by a removable roof hatch escape.

Efficiency

The TL80VS includes multiple options to raise productivity and provide intuitive operation. Self-leveling technology uses dual-direction capabilities to automatically level the load while raising and lowering loader arms. A work tool positioner enables operators to preset the angle of the attachment based on the task, while return-to-position technology lets operators set a designated height for the loader arms. Through auto two-speed, the machine shifts automatically

between low- and high-speed modes for a smoother transition between the two. This gives users more control in spaces with limited room, along with grading and other applications, according to the company.

Speed-sensitive ride control provides the convenience of enhanced material retention at higher speeds without needing to actively switch the feature off when converting to grading or other slower-moving applications.

Each of these features, as well as many others, provides more efficiency and makes the machine easy to learn, allowing for a quick training process for users of all experience levels.

Technology

Customers can choose to equip the TL80VS with Yanmar’s optional SmartAssist Remote telematics. The service offers a wide range of features, including error detection and notification to real-time operational status updates and daily work reports. SmartAssist also strengthens security with integrated theft protection, allowing the owner to set a range from a specific location and trigger an alert if that range is exceeded, according to the company.

Reliability

The TL80VS includes a two-year/2,000-hour warranty. The machine’s durable steel-embedded rubber-tracked undercarriage provides construction-grade dependability. Heavy-duty bar-tread tracks complement the undercarriage through improved ride quality and reduced vibration. The bar-treaded tracks provide year-round dependability, improving traction in extreme conditions like snow, mud and soft soils, according to the company.

Yanmar also provides a 1-year/1,000-hour warranty on the tracks.

The unit provides easily accessible daily checkpoints; removable skid plates; three-panel engine access; and a swing-out radiator that can be opened without tools for quick, convenient cleaning when necessary.

Diamond Mowers Present Its 2024 Equip Expo Preview

Diamond Mowers is bringing its signature power, performance and productivity to the 2024 Equip Expo where it will showcase a premier lineup of skid steer and excavator attachments engineered to withstand the toughest terrains and demanding workloads season after season, according to the company.

Drum Mulcher DC Pro

Delivering a new level of mulching performance for low flow (16 to 30 GPM) loaders up to 75hp, the Drum Mulcher DC Pro is differentiated by its 63cc, two-speed, bentaxis piston motor, which allows the attachment to spool-up faster and deliver greater force to power through more and larger material. Features include a 50-in. cutting width to slice through and mulch trees and brush up to 8 in. in diameter; a rugged chassis that allows the operator to manipulate downed material; and an optimized infeed system that produces an aesthetically desirable chip size and reduces the need for back-dragging.

Excavator Drum Mulcher DC Pro X

The Excavator Drum Mulcher DC Pro X increases the versatility of midi-excavators by effectively cutting back and processing unwanted vegetation, making it ideal for land clearing and forestry management, according to the company.

Offered in 30-in. and 50-in. cutting widths to accommodate carriers from 4.5 to 10 metric tons, it comes equipped with a 63cc adjustable displacement hydraulic motor that provides impressive torque to process materials up to 8 in. in diameter and oversized, serrated skid shoes to control, position and manipulate downed material. The processing cham-

ber is shaped to effectively mulch on the first pass and reduce the need for back-dragging while depth control rings that limit bite size for optimal infeed work in conjunction with

steel teeth to give operators complete control of the cutting action.

Reflex Stump Grinder

The Reflex Stump Grinder is an excellent choice for land clearing and rural grinding applications, according to Diamond Mowers. It uses the skid-steer’s lift arm to position its heavy-duty wheel in the stump, then drives it through the wood using the machine’s wheels or tracks.

This grinder is equipped with a cushioned parallelogram mechanism that protects the wheel from too much pressure, alleviating overload by flexing and keeping the wheel out of harm’s way. Grinding wheels are available in 24-in. or 26in. cutting widths and are paired with an appropriately sized motor to match the hydraulic flow of the machine.

Expo attendees can see these attachments up close by visiting Booth #21104 during the show.

Amtrak Unveils Renderings of Future West Baltimore Station

Amtrak published new renderings of the future West Baltimore MARC Station that will be built as part of the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program.

The updated designs build on previous versions shared publicly and were developed in close coordination with MDOT MTA, while also incorporating feedback provided by members of the community and other stakeholders.

“These renderings reflect the meaningful input we received from community members through the design process,” said Amtrak Assistant Vice President Luigi Rosa, who is leading the Program. “The new West Baltimore MARC Station will upgrade the customer experience for thousands of annual MARC riders while enhancing connectivity to Baltimore Penn Station, Washington, D.C., and beyond.”

“We are so excited for the public to see the transformational West Baltimore MARC Station,” said Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold. “This is the next step in creating an interconnected transit hub for the West Baltimore community which will provide access to the local bus network, MARC trains and the future Red Line light rail line.”

The new West Baltimore MARC Station will feature:

• Restrooms

• Enclosed waiting area

• Full ADA accessibility, including elevators and level boarding platforms that line up with the train, allowing all doors access for boarding and alighting

• Local transit connections, including to the West Baltimore Bus Hub and future Red Line Light Rail

• Roadway improvements

• Widened, protected and illuminated sidewalks on Franklin and Mulberry streets

• Enhanced pick-up and drop-off areas

• Public art from local artists

The new fully accessible station is a vital component of the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program, which will modernize and transform a 10-mi. section of the Northeast Corridor through several infrastructure upgrades.

These include the construction of a new tunnel for electrified passenger trains that currently use the existing 151-year-old B&P Tunnel, a $50 million West Baltimore Community Investment Program designed to benefit neighborhoods along the new tunnel route, new road bridges, modern rail infrastructure and more.

The overall Program will be completed by 2035. Amtrak and MDOT MTA are developing a construction timeline for the new station and will publish additional updates as planning and final design efforts advance. 

Ditch Witch of Virginia Adds HD Hyundai Compact Lines

HD Hyundai Construction Equipment

North America announced the addition to its North America dealer network of Ditch Witch of Virginia, Glen Allen, Va.

The dealership will represent Hyundai compact construction equipment products — including compact excavators, skid steers and compact track loaders — from its four locations serving central and northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, eastern West Virginia and the Delmarva peninsula.

Ditch Witch of Virginia is a provider of trenchers, vibratory plows, horizontal directional drills and stand-on skid steers. Vice President of sales and owner, Jacob Horton, said the company’s growth and marketplace demand made the time right to expand into compact construction and earth-moving equipment.

“We try to provide our customers with everything they need to get the job done,” Horton said. “The Hyundai compact equipment line brings it all together with even more jobsite solutions. We have looked for the right partnership for some time, and we’ve found it. This is the perfect time for

our dealership and customers to pick the Hyundai brand.”

Horton said, “The Hyundai product line lets us talk to anyone who needs to dig below the dirt,” encompassing a variety of construction, utility, landscaping and materialhandling applications. He described Hyundai as “a great partner with high quality equipment and great support, including training, financing and marketing.”

In addition to its Glen Allen headquarters near Richmond, Ditch Witch of Virginia also has locations in Chesapeake and Manassas, Va., and Seaford, Del., all of which will sell and support Hyundai compact equipment.

“Hyundai is happy to add Ditch Witch of Virginia to our dealer network,” said Mike Ross, senior vice president, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America. “Its success in selling related equipment lines makes Ditch Witch of Virginia perfectly positioned to represent Hyundai compact excavators, skid steers and compact track loaders.”

AI Helps Simplify Data Management For Fleet Managers

company outlines five factors IT leaders must consider in harnessing AI’s benefits.

At its most basic AI, or machine learning, monitors large volumes of data that a telematics system can churn out.

As Teletrac/Navman explains, AI technology designed for fleet management clearly and concisely produces, analyzes and reports on that data.

“AI spots patterns and behaviors and can make recommendations based on the data,” said the company in a website article.

These tools develop expertise and offer data beyond alarms and status alerts, said Teletrac. AI offers a glimpse into the future of a machine or an entire fleet.

“It recognizes patterns that are hidden in the data and helps you answer the questions that you don’t know to ask,” the company said.

This is considered by the company to be “the biggest difference between AI and business intelligence.”

Where business intelligence requires the user know what questions to ask, AI uses data to identify factors most influencing outcomes. After identifying influencers, AI then provides recommended adjustments so the user can chart a course of action toward better fleet management.

Potential to Streamline Fleet Management

“The role of AI is to simplify data management and help fleet managers identify problem areas before they become an issue,” said Teletrac.

The technology then helps create real-time coaching and training programs a contractor can use right away.

According to Teletrac, AI factors in prediction with cause and effect and anticipation to streamline fleet management.

The company explains three scenarios AI has the capability to solve based on the data available are prediction, cause and effect and anticipation:

1. This seems familiar (prediction): We have seen “X” scenario before and “Y” was the result. In other similar cases, these situations tended to emerge.

2. I’ve noticed when this then and that (cause and effect):

3. Based on historical data, this is likely to occur (anticipation): For example, AI has noticed that reducing harsh driving generally increases vehicle lifespans and reduces fuel consumption.

“AI relies on data, and lots of it, to learn about operations and provide insights and predictions,” said Teletrac. “Fleet management systems capture an ever-increasing volume of data from a wide range of data points, which can be pulled into an AI processor.”

Data includes but is not limited to engine diagnostics ODB2 and J1939, CAN bus, runtime, maintenance, fuel usage idle times and location and driver hours.

Other data AI is capable of capturing pertains to dangerous and distracted driving, fatigue data and vehicle/asset utilization data.

Taking Asset Management By Storm

The construction industry has been lit by AI and according to Fleetio there’s no shortage of fleet management product offerings on the market right now.

They’re all designed to help fleets improve safety, productivity and decision making. Some systems are designed to work through smart devices.

Last year, data analytics software provider Foresight Intelligence integrated AI features into its Fleet Intelligence solution, controlled by voice.

Speaking in English or Spanish, mobile devices can be used via

voice to request assistance with real-time information about the equipment.

On the job site, dozers, excavators and trucks can be tracked for location, usage, maintenance and inspection details, based on the user’s role on the project.

Contractors, manufacturers, dealers and rental houses can better manage their assets, utilization and project outcomes deploying the right resources at the right time.

“Fleet Intelligence provides triggers and signals that allow teams to proactively manage their equipment, in the language of their choice,” said the company. “These new AI-powered features will have an incredibly positive impact on machine availability and project profitability.”

The AI-powered voice control features are designed to deploy and use easily with no training required or technology expertise needed.

Designed to be as simple as pushing a button and asking for information, the new features allow for quick adoption by crew members. As a result, the company said, the system promotes safety, ease of use in the field and efficiency.

“Fleet Intelligence helps our customers manage more equipment with fewer people,” said Dale Hanna, CEO. “Construction managers, fleet supervisors, technicians and operators will be able to access relevant fleet and equipment data in their preferred language.”

Purpose-built for the construction industry, the system provides “unparalleled” insights into every aspect of the mixed fleet environment.

“We’ve had telematics, sensors in equipment, computer managed componentry and other technological advancements,” said Ron Slee of Learning Without Scars.

This system “provides triggers and signals that will have a positive impact on machine availability and project profitability,” said

the construction equipment trainer.

An AI-powered tire scanning program from Anyline gives smart devices the ability to read, interpret and process visual information.

With AI and computer vision in the company’s mobile tire tread scanner the user points a smart device at a tire and the app creates a digital model of it. The device reflects the tread depth of the scanned tire to provide accurate and consistent data, an improvement over the tradition of measuring with a quarter.

“All tire data collected via the app is automatically recorded and can be easily shared within an organization,” said Fleetio.

Users can link tire data to specific VINs or license plates to get greater visibility of tire health in relation to specific vehicles.

“By making it faster and easier to monitor tire health,” the app helps fleets replace or retread tires at optimal times, said Fleetio.

“As a result, fleets benefit from reduced maintenance costs and higher vehicle uptime.”

Predictive maintenance analytics have become a key facet of a solid fleet management department.

With a goal of reducing unplanned downtime, Optimum Fleet Health’s system analyzes more than 8,000 performance indicators.

The AI-powered Optimum VRx predictive engine can anticipate system failures up to four weeks before they happen, asserts the developer.

“With the knowledge that a vehicle is likely to fail soon, fleets can head off unplanned downtime by scheduling preventive maintenance,” said Fleetio.

The technology also diagnoses the causes of issues and provides actionable resolution plans for fleet managers.

“By elevating the efficacy of preventive maintenance, fleets are able to minimize costly disruptions … and reduce replacement vehicle costs,” said Fleetio.

Case Helps Contractors Maneuver in Tight Job Sites

Fresh off the heels of the largest number of product launches in the company’s history, Case Construction Equipment is further enhancing its machine lineup, offering a big range of new models and upgrades to empower construction and utility crews facing labor shortages and constrained job sites.

Adding more versatility, maneuverability and muscle on machines ranging from backhoes to rough-terrain forklifts, Case is continuing its mission to solve problems on the job site through practical innovation, allowing teams to accomplish more with less amidst growing demands from booming infrastructure investment.

“Labor shortages continue to shrink the workforce, while at the same time companies are challenged to work more productively and more profitably,” said Terry Dolan, vice president — North America, Case Construction Equipment. “We geared our latest round of Case innovations toward helping crews maneuver these challenges more effectively and efficiently than ever before.”

The new lineup of Case machines includes three new Construction King backhoe loaders, a new 5-metric ton class mini excavator and an all-new, full-sized wheel loader that ups the ante on power and versatility. Case also is launching new upgrades to existing machines, including maintenancefree emissions solutions and linkage improvements for compact wheel loaders and enclosed cab options for Case H Series all-terrain forklifts.

New Backhoe Loaders Double Down On Productivity

Case Construction King backhoe loaders have made a name for themselves as the original two-in-one tool-carrying machines. Now, Case is taking innovation further with two new models that offer side-shift capabilities — letting operators move the boom left or right to work more efficiently parallel to walls or around obstacles.

Previewed at last year’s ConExpo, the new 97-hp Case 580SV Construction King side shift and the larger, 110-hp Case 695SV side-shift and 695SV center-pivot models are now available, in addition to the N Series lineup. The new machines carry over many popular features from the N Series, like ProControl swing dampening, auto ride control and ECO modes for fuel savings, along with significant upgrades to maneuverability.

“The new side-shift models take the legendary Case Construction King capabilities to new frontiers, putting them smack dab into confined spaces and up next to structures,” said George MacIntyre, product manager — backhoe loaders. “With a hydraulic

side-shift boom and vertical outriggers, these machines can get more done in tight spaces. They also let operators dig rectangular trenches without having to reposition.”

The Case 580SV side shift features a tool carrier design that improves stability and material retention, while its side-shift configuration and narrow width make for more productive work in confined spaces. For bigger, tougher jobs, the powerful Case 695SV side-shift and center-pivot models feature a tool carrier loader arm, allowing them to do double duty as a wheel loader, meaning one less machine to bring to the job site.

Both 695SV models are equipped with 4WD, 4-wheel steer and four equal-sized tires and include a PowerShift transmission. The expanded Case backhoe offering also is compatible with numerous attachments, giving crews a big toolkit for improving productivity, speed and accuracy on highly varied jobs.

New Case Mini-Excavator Brings Upsized Power, Versatility

For construction and utility crews who are scaling up work on bigger jobs but still need to work in tight spaces, the all-new Case CX50D mini-excavator delivers more punch in a compact design. This 5-metric ton class machine offers greater lifting capacity and better digging performance for jobs that demand more production in shorter time from operators.

When it comes to attachment versatility, the new mini excavator powers a wide range of specialized attachments for highly varied jobs. It comes standard with multifunctional hydraulics and a second auxiliary circuit, as well as an optional third auxiliary circuit for advanced attachments like tilt

And with a variety of axle options to match jobsite conditions, they’ll be able to get the best traction performance possible.

The new Case 651G also helps operators stay productive longer with a roomy cab that boasts all the comforts operators love. Features like AC and heat, heated seats, Bluetooth radio and phone connectivity let operators work comfortably, while the rear sloping hood and optional backup camera improve visibility.

“When production demands on difficult jobsites require long days of uninterrupted work, operator comfort is key to productivity for the long haul,” said Neil Detra, product manager — full-size and compact wheel loaders. “We designed this new machine with operators top of mind to provide an experience that’s like taking your office to the job site.”

Compact Wheel Loaders Boost Visibility, Control

rotators and grapples. It also offers another optional dedicated auxiliary circuit to power mulchers.

Crews also can improve the safety and efficiency of material handling with the optional object handling kit that includes check valves on the boom and arm.

Operators also will be able to work longer and more comfortably in the CX50D due to the automotive-style cab. Here, Case goes all in on comfort, control and convenience, including features like auto climate control with heat and A/C, Bluetooth radio, a fiveway adjustable seat and a customizable LCD screen that provides important data on the machine and attachments.

Case Delivers More Muscle That’s Easy to Handle

For teams that need a tough workhorse that doesn’t compromise on control, comfort or versatility, the newest addition to the Case large wheel loader family offers a robust solution to boost productivity on the job site. The Case 651G delivers breakout force of nearly 24,000 lbs. and lifting capacity of over 16,100 lbs. to help teams plow through tougher jobs. The new model also features a larger hydraulic pump for increased cycle times, a curved bucket for better material retention and a higher hinge pin for better dumping clearance.

Case makes it easier to manage all the muscle of their new full-sized wheel loader with features like a touchscreen display and adjustable, intuitive electrohydraulic controls that allow the operator to independently set boom and bucket responsiveness to smooth, moderate or aggressive. Operators can even weigh loads and track material moved with an integrated onboard scale.

Updates to Case F Series compact wheel loaders will help teams working in confined job sites with new features that improve visibility and control. An elevated driving position, an abundance of curved glass in the cab and four-corner strobe lights ensure maximum visibility on the job site, while new Zbar linkage upgrades let operators push their machine further with maximum breakout force.

Case 21F, 121F, 221F and 321F models also feature time-saving, maintenance-free Tier IV Final emissions solutions that improve uptime by eliminating regeneration and expensive diesel particulate filters.

Control-enhancing features like parallel lift capabilities on Case 21F and 121F models help keep loads stable and allow for better visibility of the coupler during attachment changeouts. Case 221F and 321F models combine auxiliary high-flow hydraulics and a creep speed mode to provide max hydraulic flow at constant speeds for smoother operation of attachments like brooms and snowblowers. All the models also feature improved LCD screens with simplified controls to make operation easier.

Rough-Terrain Forklifts Protect Operators in Tough Conditions

Case H Series rough-terrain forklifts offer construction crews and utility teams a versatile, easy-to-operate solution for lifting heavy loads in off-road environments. Now, a new factory-designed, built and installed enclosed cab option protects the operator from the elements and helps teams work in more extreme conditions. With heat, AC and comfort features such as Bluetooth radio and USB charging ports, operators can continue working in sweltering heat or frigid cold. For more information, visit CaseCE.com. 

Implementation, Legacy Equipment Should Not Deter AI Use

With AI systems users can spot patterns and behaviors and make recommendations based on specific data.

Predicting Fleet Management’s Future

In development by Bridgestone Mobility Solutions is a virtual fleet manager solution, which the company said will be available within two years.

It’s designed as “an extra pair of eyes for human fleet managers” who will feed the technology with data from various company operations systems.

“From there, the virtual fleet manager will interpret that data and provide recommendations and insights that humans might’ve overlooked,” said Fleetio. “Human fleet managers will be able to interact with the virtual fleet manager through questions and commands using everyday language a la ChatGPT.”

Raghunath Banerjee, Bridgestone’s vice president of data solutions, stressed that virtual fleet managers won’t be replacing humans anytime soon.

“They will get a virtual fleet manager who is really going to help them, train them, provide them with the right insight,” said Banerjee.

In its research, Info-Tech delved into the concept of how AI is capable of transforming fleet management.

The IT research firm offers practical cases to help fleet managers and IT leaders solve their asset management challenges.

“Data is being generated at an exponential rate due to technological advancements,” said Kevin Tucker, principal research director.

The rate makes it nearly impossible for humans to perceive and analyze all the data in a timely manner.

“Fleet managers will increasingly need to use AI if they want to keep up with the … growth … for scalable transportation solutions and infrastructure.”

The complexity of implementation with legacy equipment and unsupported systems should not deter organizations from AI adoption, said Tucker.

“These systems are evolving, with the prospect of providing prescriptive instructions soon becoming a reality,” he said.

In its latest blueprint, Info-Tech highlights the importance for fleet managers to build collaborative partnerships with industry peers, tech companies and experts.

In fleet management, AI allows users to track and analyze data related to engine diagnostics, CAN bus, runtime, maintenance, fuel usage idle times and location, driver hours, dangerous and distracted driving, fatigue data and vehicle/asset usage data.

“With AI becoming a pivotal contributor to the fleet management solutions market, understanding its impactful delivery is imperative,” said the firm.

Here are five factors Info-Tech said both fleet managers and IT leaders must consider:

1. Be Intentional: Emphasize clarity about important AI adoption factors, such as policy, transparency, ethics and accuracy requirements.

2. Identify Embedded AI: Recognize and assess AI integration in products, even when it’s not immediately apparent, directly interactive or configurable.

3. Unmask Invisible AI: Diligently identify AI functionalities hidden within products.

4. Fix Hallucinations: Develop strategies to manage and mitigate the risks of AI-generated misinformation.

5. Enforce Responsible AI: Advocate for the development and deployment of trustworthy AI solutions.

Info-Tech maintains that AI in fleet management can also enable greater flexibility for remote and hybrid work models.

“This technological shift allows for remote monitoring, helping employees balance their personal and professional commitments,” said the company.  CEG
