Protecting Delaware Memorial Bridge

Some people might find insurance boring.

Others would find the lack of insurance protection negligent, especially when it comes to pro-

The Delaware Memorial Bridge soars 188 ft. above the Delaware River and carries I-295 and Route 40 traffic from Delaware to New Jersey. The two suspension bridges are four lanes each and on a busy day transport 80,000 vehicles in

Cranes held CraneFest 2024 at its world headquarters in Lexington, Ky., Sept. 16 to 20, 2024.

The event was held in two-day sessions with representatives of the company’s dealer network, rental houses and end users in attendance to learn about Link-Belt’s historic beginnings, manufacturing capabilities and lineup of world class cranes.

Link-Belt hosted a reception and dinner at FasigTipton, the oldest Thoroughbred auction company. The reception and dinner provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to network with peers and spend time with Link-Belt representatives.

The following day, the Link-Belt executive team welcomed the group with opening remarks followed by a video presentation which outlined Link-Belt’s history, development and accomplishments. Attendees were then bussed to the Link-Belt Company world headquarters for a tour of the manufacturing facility. After the tour, attendees were led to an outdoor staging area for a live presentation of Link-Belt’s full product line.

Link-Belt introduced its new 65-ton (60 t) 65 RT to its rough-terrain product line.

The 65 RT includes a foursection, full-power, greaseless main boom (38 to 115 ft. [11.6 to 35 m]) and an optional 35 to 58-ft. (10.7 to 17.7-m) offsetable bi-fold lattice fly that are manufactured in the United States at Link-Belt’s headquarters.

The 65 RT features a new hydraulic boom extend system, as well as LED lighting

for brighter, more efficient lighting during low-light conditions. The 65 RT also is equipped with a new six-speed Dana transmission with a remote filter for ease of servicing. The transmission is mounted to a 270-hp Cummins QSB6.7L Tier IV engine.

Following Link-Belt’s presentation of its crane lineup, CraneFest attendees were treated to lunch, after which they had an opportunity to review the cranes up close while spending time with Link-Belt company representatives for a full run down on each of the models.  CEG

Volvo CE Showcases Products at North American Event

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) welcomed nearly a thousand customers and dealers to its North American headquarters for Volvo Days, showcasing dozens of new and existing products and offering networking, a dynamic machine show, factory tours and hands-on experi-

ence with machines and services.

Volvo Days is a customer event held every few years in Shippensburg, Pa. The 2024 event is showing customers how the OEM is growing its range of offerings in both conventional and electric power across the company’s extensive lineup.

“Providing an exceptional customer experience is something we’re focused on every day of the year, but Volvo Days gives us a special opportunity to celebrate our customers, strengthen relationships and allow people to talk with our experts and test-drive machines,” said Scott Young, head of Region North America, Volvo CE.

Several new products were introduced to the North American market, including the SD125 soil compactor, the R60 and R70 rigid haul trucks, and the L120 Electric midsize wheel loader and new-generation EC230 Electric midsize excavator.

The event also is the first chance for many customers to have firsthand experience with the new series of Volvo excavators introduced earlier this summer. The series includes several mid-size and large models, with more to be introduced in the coming months, and represents the biggest update to the Volvo CE excavator lineup in two decades.

Volvo Days attendees commented on the power and responsiveness of the new excavators, as well as the thoughtful cab updates.

“I like how they changed the seat and how you can drive with the dials on the joysticks. Everything is more comfortable for an operator who’s going to be in the machine for eight hours or more a day,” said Gavin Craig, an operator at Craig’s Construction in Calhoun, Ga.

Dalton Nokes, general superintendent at Garrett Excavating in northwest Arkansas, agreed.

“These excavators are very responsive and smooth — some of the fastest excavators I’ve ever run,” he said.

The CD McIntosh Power Station project, commissioned by Lakeland Electric, required Total Wrecking to safely abate and demolish multiple units of the power station, including stacks, boilers, cooling towers, coal conveyors and more while maintaining operations at the active facility.

The team faced unique challenges, such as working in proximity to live overhead transmission lines and a sensitive ecosystem that includes wetlands, lakes and the Tenoroc Public Nature Preserve.

“This project showcases our dedication to executing large-scale demolition projects safely, efficiently, and with minimal environmental impact,” said Frank Bodami, president of Total Wrecking & Environmental. “We are incredibly proud to be recognized on the international stage and remain focused on delivering outstanding results for our clients.”

Since its introduction, Prinoth’s Panther T14R crawler carrier has remained a top choice for contractors looking to boost productivity and tackle work at even the most chal-

lenging job sites.

One of the standout features of the T14R is its efficiency, according to the manufacturer.

“The Panther T14R offers about 32 percent more productivity than other vehicles in the same category,” said Product Manager Eric Fatyol. “This impressive performance is achieved through a combination of high payload capacity, speed and maneuverability on rough terrain.”

With the ability to complete up to a third more work cycles, the T14R can significantly accelerate project timelines, allowing contractors to take on more projects and increase their revenue streams, the manufacturer said.

Art of Treading Lightly

In addition to its technical capabilities, the T14R also offers environmental advantages. With a maximum speed of 8.1 mph, this crawler carrier can reach remote job sites that would otherwise require expensive and environmentally disruptive road construction or costly helicopter service. By eliminating the need for access infrastructure development, crawler carriers like the T14R help contractors minimize their environmental impact and preserve sensitive ecosystems.

The T14R’s low ground pressure of approximately 3 psi ensures minimal impact on the terrain, leaving a smaller footprint than the roughly 10 psi of a human walker. This low-impact design allows the machine to navigate delicate landscapes without causing significant damage, making it an ideal choice for projects in environmentally sensitive areas.

Built for Performance

The Panther T14R features a Cat C7.1 engine, which adheres to the stringent EPA Tier IV Final and EUROMOT Stage V emissions standards. It’s also powerful enough to haul the T14R’s maximum payload of 29,100 lbs. at 33 percent, up a 15-degree slope.

The T14R also incorporates a unique single-touch drivedirection reset. The system allows operators to effortlessly reset cab and chassis alignment during operation, simplifying maneuvers and boosting overall efficiency. The vehicle’s hydrostatic drive motor has been fine-tuned to optimize high travel speeds and improve responsiveness under high-torque demand.

Undercarriage Overachievement

The T14R’s undercarriage is engineered like no other. Rugged large steel wheels and high-travel suspension allow the vehicle to maneuver over the most uneven soil, ruts, mud and ditches with ease. Its tracks are suitable for all soil types, and its self-cleaning undercarriage won’t accumulate mud and debris, allowing the equipment to operate smoothly and efficiently in all weather conditions.

The automatic track tensioning system simplifies maintenance, reducing downtime and allowing the T14R to spend more time on the job. This feature not only improves the machine’s overall efficiency but also helps to extend its lifespan, providing contractors with a better return on their investment.

Gain Broader Perspective

Safety is paramount on any construction site, and the T14R’s enhanced visibility features contribute to a safer working environment. The machine’s lowered and slanted engine cowling design provides operators with an unobstructed view of their surroundings, increasing confidence and reducing the risk of accidents.

“The overall architecture of the vehicle offers unmatched visibility gains, making it safer for everyone on the job site,” notes Fatyol.

In addition to its visibility advantages, the T14R also is available with a rear-view camera as an optional feature, further enhancing situational awareness and minimizing blind spots. This added layer of safety not only protects the operator but also ensures the well-being of other workers on the construction site.

All-Purpose, All-Terrain, All Time

The T14R’s versatility is further enhanced by its compatibility with a wide range of specialized attachments, making it adaptable to various industries and applications. Whether focused on off-highway construction, mining, utility infrastructure, oil and gas or environmental reclamation applications, the T14R’s power and flexibility make it an indispensable asset on any project.

Prinoth’s commitment to innovation is evident in the T14R’s advanced features, many of which are patented or patent-pending.

“We will keep pushing the boundaries to continually

Prinoth said the T14Rs exert only about 3 psi of ground pressure, compared to the roughly 10 psi of a human walker, making it perfect to navigate environmentally sensitive landscapes without causing damage.
The T14R’s 29,100-lb. payload capacity is the highest in its category, and its undercarriage is self-cleaning and won’t accumulate mud and debris, according to Prinoth.

develop the ultimate solutions for our customers in terms of safety, reliability, sustainability, and performance,” said Fatyol. “This dedication to continuous improvement ensures that the T14R remains at the forefront of the industry, offering construction companies the most advanced technology and capabilities available.”

Operate in Comfort Zone

Operator comfort is another key consideration, as it directly impacts productivity. The T14R’s ROPS/FOPS-certified cab is designed with ergonomics in mind, featuring a tilt and telescope steering wheel and foot throttle pedal system that mimics the familiarity of driving a truck. New oper-

ators can be trained to operate the Panther in a matter of minutes.

The T14R’s spacious, insulated cab is quieter than other crawler carriers and equipped with air conditioning as a standard feature, helping to keep operators focused and alert throughout long shifts, even in extreme weather conditions. A built-in inclinometer provides users with a display and adjustable alarms.

Setting Pace for Future

For construction professionals seeking a machine that can boost productivity, prioritize safety or conquer challenging terrain, the Prinoth Panther T14R is a top con-

tender, according to the manufacturer. The T14R continues to enhance the way contractors approach their projects, ultimately leading to faster completion times, increased profitability, and a competitive edge in the market.

Whether new or used, a Prinoth Panther T14R can help construction companies better position themselves for success in an increasingly demanding industry.

“With its performance, safety features, and versatility, the T14R platform gives the industry something to build with and to build upon,” said Fatyol. “That’s why we call it the fastest and most productive crawler carrier on the planet.” 

Experts Share Tips On Preventing Equipment Theft

destruction.

One morning, he discovered his skid steer had been stolen; the next, he noticed his compactor was damaged during a fuel theft.

“There’s a hole in the bottom of our fuel tank of our roller,” Veneta, Ore., excavation contractor Brian Sorensen, told news station kezi.com in late June.

“They drained all of the fuel out of it,” said Sorenson, adding that now he’ll have to fork out thousands of dollars to repair the compactor.

Fortunately, the skid steer was recovered just hours later, due to a GPS tracker he’d smartly installed on it.

“They started it and they drove it down the road, loaded it up and took it,” he said. “Luckily, we had GPS, so I was able to call the sheriff with the address of the machine and meet them out there.”

Sorenson said the worst equipment damage they’ve dealt with until now was stolen batteries.

“If the guys don’t lock a battery compartment, the battery might get stolen, it’s a couple hundred-dollar deal,” he said.

“But [we’ve] never had anything stolen like this, never any damage like that done to equipment before.”

Why, How Theft Is Big Business

Trackunit says construction theft is a growing concern, even with today’s asset equipment devices and software. Thieves simply exploit security gaps.

Theft is big business because of the resale value of machinery and relative ease of access to job sites, the equipment management service provider said.

Inadequate perimeter fencing, lack of surveillance systems and poor record-keeping also make job sites attractive for theft.

Nationally, heavy equipment theft costs the construction industry an estimated $400 million every year, according to National Equipment Register (NER).

Theft is a significant problem. Sites in Texas, California, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia are hit most often, said the national organization.

They’re particularly vulnerable, said NER, because of their large construction industries and high volumes of equipment in use.

Though Sorenson in Oregon was able to recover his skid steer quickly, Trackunit and NER said recovery rates for stolen machinery are alarmingly low.

“Even if your state isn’t listed among the top for construction equipment theft, it doesn’t mean you’re immune to the risk,” said Trackunit.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports only approximately 20 percent of stolen equipment is ever recovered.

Machinery most frequently targeted by thieves? Loaders, excavators, tractors, generators, light towers, forklifts, utility vehicles and compressors.

“These machines and equipment are prime targets owing to their high value,” said Trackunit.

Their ease of access and mobility also make them relatively simple to steal and sell on the black market, the company said.

Adobe Stock photo Loaders, excavators, tractors, generators, light towers, forklifts, utility vehicles and compressors are the most sought-after types of equipment by construction machinery thieves.

Adobe Stock photo

With gaps in security and easily accessed machines, when it comes to equipment theft, criminals are getting bolder forcing contractors to get more inventive in their theft prevention methods.

Construction theft is never random, say security experts. Certain patterns can indicate when thefts are more likely to occur.

“Thieves often strike during long weekends and holiday periods when job sites are less monitored and activities slow down,” said Trackunit. “Additionally, nighttime and early mornings are prime times for theft due to reduced visibility and fewer workers on site.”

Awareness of these common times can help in planning enhanced security measures during these vulnerable periods.

Equipment brands that offer the highest resale value and most widespread use across the construction industry are hit most often. They’re high in demand in both legitimate and illicit markets, said Trackunit, and their prevalence on job sites means they’re often readily accessible.

Plus, parts for these types of equipment are valuable and relatively easy to resell.

What frustrated Sorenson was the fact that no arrest was made in the recovery of his skid steer.

“When I was getting the skid steer, they were there speaking with the deputies,” the excavation contractor told kezi.com. “They had a ‘I don’t know how it got there, it’s not mine.’ And that was it. There were no arrests made; I got my skid steer eventually and left,” he said.

The local sheriff’s office said it can’t assume that the party that possesses the stolen vehicle is responsible for the theft.

“Just because they’re behind the wheel doesn’t necessarily mean they are the person that stole it,” said Sergeant Tim Wallace. “Maybe they know it’s stolen, or maybe they don’t. If they’ve purchased it, that’s an investigative lead we have to consider, too.”

What Machinery Theft Costs Contractors

As Trackunit notes, construction site theft can have severe repercussions, significantly disrupting job progress and creating substantial financial losses.

“When vital equipment is stolen, operations can halt, causing delays and missed deadlines, leading to penalties and damaged client relationships.”

A contractor’s replacement costs are often coupled with increased insurance company premiums and additional security expenditures.

“Beyond the tangible losses, theft can demoralize the workforce and erode trust within the team, as well as among contractors and clients,” said Trackunit.

Construction sites are often expansive, with many people going in and out, proving difficult to secure fully, especially during periods of low activity.

The frequent movement of machinery between sites complicates tracking and recovery efforts. Additionally, stolen machinery can result in additional security investments, further straining project budgets.

Another challenge in combating construction equipment theft is the lack of a standardized registration system, noted Trackunit.

“Unlike automobiles, heavy machinery does not typically have mandated registration akin to vehicle VIN numbers,” said the company. “Nor is there a centralized database for tracking ownership and theft across different jurisdictions.”

Stealing construction equipment is considered a low-risk crime because thieves often don’t get caught.

“This lack of significant consequences further encourages the proliferation of such thefts,” said Trackunit.

Prevention Takes Awareness, Ingenuity

Preventing theft is challenging without security measures. Advances in technology and telematics can significantly boost a contractor’s recovery chances.

Anniversary of Memorial Renews Calls for Work Zone Safety

Two decades after the dedication of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) workers’ memorial, highway workers continue to face the consequences of dangerous driving. Improved work zone safety is possible with collective efforts to practice good driving habits, including slowing down and avoiding distractions.

On Sept. 17, 2004, a monument was dedicated in a ceremony to recognize VDOT’s highway workers who lost their lives while on the job improving the commonwealth’s transportation system. Today, there are a total of 134 names of VDOT workers engraved on the monument. Many of the deaths occurred as a result of work zone crashes.

The monument was built entirely with donated funds and services from VDOT employees, family members, businesses and organizations throughout the state. No state funds were used in its construction.

Work Zone Safety

In work zones, speeding and distracted driving are some of the biggest factors leading to crashes that result in injuries and fatalities. The anniversary of the memorial provides everyone with an opportunity to remember the importance of safe driving in

work zones and the tragic consequences of unsafe driver behavior.

Unlike typical road conditions, work zones involve large equipment, traffic pattern changes, lane closures, uneven pavement, speed limit changes, and — most importantly — workers. Improved work zone awareness is needed to protect highway

workers, drivers and pedestrians.

From 2014 to 2024, there have been more than 35,000 work zone-related crashes across the commonwealth. That averages out to approximately 10 work zone-related crashes every single day. In that same time period, there have been 15,677 work zonerelated injuries and 142 fatalities, including

other drivers and non-VDOT workers.

Tips to Safely Navigate Work Zones

• Slow down.

• Focus and ditch the distractions.

• Use caution, stay alert.

• Follow the signs. Signs and flaggers will direct you through work zones. Expect changes. in traffic patterns as a project progresses.

• Watch out for workers and slow-moving equipment.

• Allow extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

• Expect speed limits to vary in work zones. Enhanced fines of up to $500 may be levied for speeding in a work zone.

• Be patient. Crews are working to improve the safety and comfort of your travels.

• Never change lanes in a work zone.

• Before starting a trip, visit 511Virginia.org for real-time information on work zones and incidents. Download the free mobile 511Virginia app or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.

For more information on the VDOT workers’ memorial, visit www.vdot.virginia.gov/about/workers-memorial/. 

S.T. Hudson, R.E. Pierson Team Up On Del. Bridge Project

The first major bridge strike was just a year after its completion in 1969 when it was hit by a tanker that plowed through the

BRIDGE from page 1

each direction along the Northeast corridor. The Delaware River Bridge Authority (DRBA) collects tolls and manages the bridge.

The DRBA is currently working to protect this valuable resource. The destruction of Baltimore’s Key Bridge in March by a runaway container ship weighing approximately 100,000 tons is fresh in the minds of many.

Gregory Pawlowski, senior engineer of the DRBA, is working with R.E. Pierson Construction and Hudson Engineers to create eight cells or “dolphins” filled with sand, stone and concrete to protect the bridge towers that support the 2,000-ft. span across the water.

The timeliness of the effort is more circumstantial than good planning.

“The discussions about enhanced bridge protection go back to at least 1999,” said Pawlowski. “At that time, there was not a desire to invest the dollars needed to protect the bridge. Planners felt it would detract from other infrastructure needs like caring for the bridge deck, upgrading overpasses and taking care of our ferries.”

As the DRBA assembled the funds for adequate protection of the bridge, it also put together a team to work together on the project. The team included Ralph Farabaugh, construction supervisor, R.E. Pierson of Pilesboro, N.J.; and Tony DePasquale, director of marine engineering of S.T. Hudson Engineers of Cherry Hill, N.J.

“When we did our research, we discovered that we first applied for a grant for bridge protection back in 2002,” said Pawlowski. “So the money took a while to arrive, but we are glad it is here now.”

History of Serving Travelers

The second suspension bridge was completed in 1968 for $77 million. The first major bridge strike was just a year later when it was hit by a tanker that plowed through the “fender,” the original protection system.

Today’s protections are more robust than the earlier efforts. But today’s ships are much more massive than the vessels of 50 years ago. The concept is surprisingly simple, although the execution is not.

“When a truck loses its brakes, the driver can plow into drums filled with sand on the side of the road,” said Pawlowski. “These structures can save lives.”

The bridge protection follows a similar pattern. Workers have been building immense “dolphins,” 80 ft. in diameter filled with sand and rock that can take the hit from runaway ships. The dolphins would be destroyed but would absorb the impact from the hit and leave the bridge towers unscathed.

The project will cost approximately $100 million and is two-thirds complete.

Of course, building protective structures in water is more complex than building them on land. The construction team began by sinking test piles to see the depth required. The piles were constructed in 40 ft. of water with the piles on the west side at 110 ft. and the east side piles at 135 ft.

The plan requires the workers to use a temporary platform to steady the straight wall sheet piling as it is lowered into the water. Pawlowski described the process as working off the temporary platform to lower the sheet piles slowly in the water, 5 ft. at a time, making sure the river mud did not cause the piles to toe in or toe out and overstress the piling interlocks. The eight dolphins required 150 sheet piles with each about 16 in. wide.

Precast concrete panels were attached to the inside and outside of the piles causing them to stiffen and be able to withstand the water pressure from the outside. The panels also should keep the steel from corroding in the water. Workers also installed a walkway and railing on the top of

each dolphin.

The temporary platforms used 653 tons of steel. Once the construction is complete the platforms will be dismantled. The dolphins required a total of 3,700 tons of steel.

Construction Teamwork

Tony DePasquale brought some ideas for the dolphins over from his time with the Army Corps of Engineers. His team at Hudson put together the plan for the current construction in 2010. The team then put the plan forward for permitting and reviews by regulators.

When the plan for the protection system was approximately 30 percent complete, both R.E. Pierson and the DRBA began serious collaboration on how to best build the system. The working entity is called a Construction Manager General Contractor (CMGC).

Still, the team did not get adequate funding to begin the protections. Finally, the funding package arrived around 2018 and, after more reviews, work on the project began.

“One of the key elements on this design is the inclusion of wick drains in the dolphins,” said DePasquale. “This system allowed us to consolidate the soil without having to dredge the river. I believe this approach will work and save the cost of dredging.”

Equipment for the project has included four 300-ton capacity cranes, several barges and an excavator for work in a marine environment.

Consultants with specialized water skills also have contributed to the work. One consultant monitored the vibration caused by driving the sheet piles. Another consultant did inspection dives while the cells were being filled. Their job was to ensure the integrity of the sheet piling interlocks during the filling.

As workers push toward the finish line for the project, S.T. Hudson, R.E. Pierson and the DRBA feel they have a solution that will be beneficial to entities in other states as they seek to protect their bridges.

“We don’t want it to happen to our bridge what happened to the Key Bridge,” said Pawlowski. “Our team has designed and built the protection to work against the biggest vessels that come through the Panama Canal. Our vision is to protect this bridge for future generations.”  CEG

TWS Marks Five Years of Manufacturing Filterpresses

Terex Washing Systems (TWS), a global leader with more than 60 years of expertise in the design and manufacture of washing equipment, celebrated five years of manufacturing filterpresses.

This milestone underscores the team’s commitment to environmental responsibility in quarry operations worldwide, with its filterpresses processing approximately 100 million tonnes annually across the globe.

“Our journey in the design and development of our own filterpresses began in 2019 and today, we stand as a global leader in delivering complete ‘Feeder to Filterpress’ solutions,” said Mark Fisher, business line director of Terex Washing Systems. “The evolution of our filterpress technology underscores our commitment to driving efficiency and sustainability in the quarrying industry.”

Benefits of Filterpress Technology

One of the key advantages of the Terex Washing Systems filterpresses is their efficiency in water recycling, which reclaim over 95 percent of the water used in the washing process, minimizing water consumption and reducing the need for freshwater input.

Filterpresses also aid in waste reduction by producing a dry filter cake waste product. This dry cake is easily transportable and can be reintegrated into the quarry or used for other applications. By maximizing water recycling and minimizing waste generation, these systems help quarry owners meet environmental regulations and demonstrate a strong commitment to responsible quarrying practices.

Another benefit of filterpresses is

improved overall efficiency of the wash plant by streamlining the water treatment process. By effectively separating solids from liquids, they produce cleaner water for reuse and optimize the performance of downstream equipment.

Quality assurance is another significant advantage as filterpresses provide clean, recycled water to re-enter the washing process, improving the quality of washed sand and aggregates.

Leadership in Technology

Since the inception of in-house filterpress manufacturing in 2019 at the Terex Washing Systems headquarters in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, the team has refined its filterpress technology and integrated it into its comprehensive “Feeder to Filterpress” washing solutions. These systems divert waste from landfills while recycling the water used during the process, significantly reducing environmental impact and improving aggregate production for quarry customers.

Beyond innovation, Terex Washing Systems offers comprehensive global support and service. With 40 distributors worldwide and regional offices in the United States, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Australia, Terex Washing Systems provides localized expertise and service.

Supported by a dedicated technical team and advanced laboratory facilities, Terex Washing Systems ensures optimal equipment performance and sustainability throughout its customers’ operations.

Startup HB Attachments Rebrands as TRUE Attachments

In the post-pandemic economy, earth-moving equipment dealers struggle with tight competition and shrinking profit margins.

Industry expert Kelly Russell founded HB Attachments Inc. in 2023 to help excavator dealerships in the United States close more deals with higher profits. The startup designs, manufactures and distributes high-quality aftermarket excavator work tools, including buckets, rippers, quick couplers, rakes, thumbs and grapples.

In September, the family-owned business, based in Springfield, Mo., revealed its new brand name: TRUE Attachments.

The profit margin on a new excavator is quite small, so dealerships have very little room to negotiate with potential customers who are shopping based on price. However, sales are typically bundled with a package that includes several attachments designed for the machine’s boom arm.

Finding the right attachment wholesaler can greatly affect a dealership’s ability to craft a competitive yet profitable sales offer.

“I saw a need in our industry for a supplier of high-quality attachments — based in the central U.S. — offering wholesale products at a price that would give a dealer the slight edge they need to win more deals and increase the average margin per deal,” Russell said.

Russell launched the company with a team comprised of loyal family members and opened a warehouse in southwest Missouri. The company distributes its products to dealerships throughout the United States.

The attachments are designed to perform well in a variety of industries, including timber, quarry and mining, oil and gas, as well as construction and excavation, according to the company.

Kelly Russell founded HB Attachments Inc. in 2023 to help excavator dealerships in the United States close more deals with higher profits.

TRUE Attachments currently offers products to fit the following brands of excavators: Case, Kobelco, Komatsu, Kubota, Hitachi, John Deere, Volvo, DEVELON, Hyundai, Takeuchi, Yanmar and SANY.

The company began as HB Attachments — with a honey badger as the mascot — but recently consulted with Midwest marketing

agency Henderson Media LLC on a rebranding package that included the new TRUE Attachments brand name, logo design, domain name registration and upcoming website launch.

HC55 · MontabertÊs Most Compact Drifter, Yet

Montabert hydraulic drifters are recognized worldwide for their high performance, reliability, long maintenance intervals, and low tool consumption, the manufacturer said.

During Intermat this year, Montabert launched the most compact and fastest underground drill in its range: the HC55. The HC55 features a number of developments. For example, a new hydraulic dampener system responds automatically to rock conditions, adapting the drill’s operation to match, thus increasing productivity while protecting the lifespan of the striking bars.

Available in four models, all Montabert CPA Drills include the following features:

• Intelligent rock-sensing technology: Reduces production costs via tooling protection as it optimizes blasting through precision drilling.

• Standard radio remote control: Full attachment control, including 2D/3D angle indicator and depth measurement with autostop.

• Fast operation: Idle time reduction and quick rod installation.

• Lightweight: aluminum feed beam reduces attachment weight, increasing maneuverability and allowing extra mounting options.

• Versatility: Carousel offers a wide range of drilling capacities (shanks, number of rods).

• Smart hydraulic dust collector: Optimizes dust filter lifespan with automatic filter-cleaning while drilling.

• Remote product support: Bluetooth connection with smartphone for diagnostics, monitoring, and factory assistance.

Primarily designed for bolting applications, this 15 kW drill is very easy to install on drill rigs due to its minimal footprint, reversibility and symmetrical connections. Engineered to withstand the toughest applications and the most extreme working environments, the nose of the HC55 has been reinforced to resist corrosion, while the unit includes five seals and an additional protection system that further work to extend wear-part lifespan.

The HC55 is compatible with R28 and R32 female couplings, as well as R32, R38 and T38 male couplings. For more information, visit montabert.com.  (Photo courtesy of Montabert.)

Volvo Announces Plans to Launch Hydrogen-Powered Trucks

Trucks that run on green hydrogen instead of fossil fuels provide one way to decarbonize transport. Hydrogen trucks will be especially suitable over longer distances and in regions where there is limited charging infrastructure, or time for, recharging of batteries.

Volvo will begin customer tests with trucks using hydrogen in combustion engines in 2026, and the trucks will be commercially available towards the end of this decade.

Already, testing in labs and in vehicles is ongoing. The hydrogen-powered combustion engine trucks will complement Volvo’s offering of other alternatives, such as battery electric trucks, fuel cell electric trucks and trucks that run on renewable fuels, like biogas and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).

“Trucks where the traditional internal combustion engine remains but runs on hydrogen will have the same performance and reliability as our diesel trucks, but with the added benefit of potentially net zero CO2 emissions well-to-wheel. They will be a valuable complement to our battery electric trucks, which have been on the market for several years,” said Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management and quality, Volvo Trucks.

Volvo trucks with combustion engines powered by green hydrogen have the potential to deliver net zero CO2 well-to-wheel when using renewable HVO as ignition fuel and are categorized as “Zero Emission Vehicles” (ZEV) under the agreed new EU CO2 emission standards.

“It’s clear that several kinds of technology are needed to decarbonize heavy transport. As a global truck manufacturer, we need to support our customers by offering a variety of decarbonization solutions, and customers can choose their alternative based on transport assignment, available infrastructure and green energy prices,” said Hjelmgren.

Volvo trucks with hydrogen-powered combustion engines

Volvo will launch trucks with combustion engines that can run on green hydrogen. These trucks provide a significant step to decarbonize heavy transport.

will feature High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI), a technology where a small amount of ignition fuel is injected with high pressure to enable compression ignition before hydrogen is added. The advantages of this technology include higher energy efficiency with lower fuel consumption, and increased engine power.

Volvo Group has signed an agreement with Westport Fuel Systems to establish a joint venture using HPDI technology.

Facts

• Hydrogen-powered Volvo trucks will have an operational range comparable to many diesel trucks, depending on

the type of transport.

• Due to the low CO2 emissions from hydrogen combustion, these trucks are categorized as “Zero Emission Vehicles” under the agreed new EU CO2 emission standards.

• Hydrogen combustion engines will also emit very small amounts of nitrogen oxides and particles.

• Hydrogen also can be used to power fuel cell electric trucks, where electricity is produced on board the truck. Fuel cell electric trucks do not emit any tailpipe emissions, only water vapor.

Snow Removal Equipment — How to Do More With Less

Many snow removal businesses base their decision on acquiring snow plow or pusher attachments on the initial cost, overlooking long-term expenses, improved efficiency, quality of clearing, and the potential to secure additional projects. When considering these factors, the optimal return on investment is achieved through the utilization of adaptable and agile attachments, even if the upfront expenditure is a little higher.

According to Degen Kelly, director of operations at Outdoor Pride, a company that generates approximately $13 million in annual revenue from snow removal services, it is tempting to focus on the lower initial purchase cost or to simply order the same attachments other companies use. This leads many to just “rinse and repeat” for par thinking, he said.

However, for the greatest overall returns, more attention should be given to the ROI that higher quality attachments provide. These attachments offer more flexible choices that allow a variety of movements in tight spaces, while adding to the value of skid steers, which are specifically designed to be nimble. Unfortunately, many standard snow plows and pushers have limited functionality, and if big and bulky, turn a nimble skid steer or wheel loader into a large, clumsy piece of equipment with limited maneuverability.

Given the harsh environments where snow removal is required, these attachments must not only perform efficiently but also must last over time.

sories that are compatible with skid steers, wheel loaders, front-end loaders, tractors and other machinery.

Among the OEM’s offerings is its AutoWing QuattroPlows, available in four models and machine operating weights, which are specialized attachments that allow operators to switch between angle plowing, wide-angle plowing, pushing and back dragging on the fly.

According to Kelly, Outdoor Pride discovered the QuattroPlow seven years ago, at a time when they were looking for an alternative to the attachments they were using.

“Most of the other options were flimsy, fixed box [snow pushers]. You really didn’t have the flexibility to drag or angle. The attachments where backdragging and angling was an option were bulky and limited the ability to easily maneuver the skid steer,” said Kelly.

The optimal return on investment when considering snow removal equipment is achieved through the utilization of adaptable and agile attachments, even if the upfront expenditure is a little higher.

Of course, given the harsh environments where snow removal is required, these attachments must not only perform efficiently but also must last over time.

“Once you crunch the numbers, you see how much time [high quality attachments] can save, how much onsite equipment you can eliminate, how much quicker your operators can work, and how much longer the equipment lasts,” said Kelly, who earlier in his career was responsible for operating snow clearing machinery with a range of

attachments from different manufacturers.

“Once you start to think about the ROI with the goal of doing more with less equipment, using a more flexible, quality attachment is a no-brainer,” said Kelly.

Effectively Removing New England’s Heaviest Snow Loads

Founded in 1988, Manchester, N.H.based Outdoor Pride has become one of the largest landscape and snow management providers in New England. Like many landscape contractors, the company offers yearround service that includes snow removal in the winter for large commercial and government-owned properties.

“All the facilities we maintain are zero tolerance, which means that if they ever had to shut down, they could lose a lot of revenue every hour. So, the ability to quickly and safely clear snow from a site is essential. We

need our entire fleet of equipment effectively performing every day during snow events,” said Kelly.

According to Kelly, the average annual snowfall in New Hampshire amounts to approximately 60 in. However, as recently as 2020, the state experienced winters with snowfall exceeding a 100 in. To keep up with the high demand for snow removal services, Outdoor Pride maintains a large fleet of more than 300 machines, ranging from trucks and full-size loaders to skid steers and walkway equipment.

For snow removal, the company has 85 Bobcat skid steers and mini loaders, each equipped with a unique AutoWing attachment from Minnesota-based SnowWolf Plows.

Founded in Minnesota in the 1970s as a family run snow removal and landscaping contract business, SnowWolf transitioned into the role of equipment manufacturer in 1990. Today, the OEM offers a variety of models and sizes of snow plows, pushers, blowers, and other snow removal acces-

In contrast, a key feature of the AutoWing design is the ability to extend and retract its side wings independently, depending on the width of the road or the amount of snow cleared. This allows operators to efficiently clear wider swaths of snow without manually adjusting the plow’s position, increasing productivity and reducing the need for additional passes.

The AutoWing also is unique because it only requires one hydraulic circuit for efficient operation. No additional wiring is necessary and there are no specialized controls. The attachment can be angled left or right with a standard control feature on the joystick. The user-friendly design simplifies operator training.

“[The QuattroPlow] has all the great aspects of a fixed box, along with the ability to easily angle and back drag. It has a very simple setup with just two hydraulic lines,” said Kelly.

Outdoor Pride also elected to utilize SnowWolf’s ActivEdge, a unique design involving multiple cutting-edge sections with individual adjustability and adaptability. The floating cutting edges allow for more precise snow removal even on varied surfaces and minimizes the need for excessive salt or deicing agents.

Investing in Snow Equipment; Using It Flexibly, Efficiently

SNOW from page 89

“We have seen a benefit from utilizing the [ActivEdge]. Our plow edges are now following the contours of the pavement a lot easier,” said Kelly.

The increased efficiency of Outdoor Pride’s snow removal equipment has substantially improved its operations. Kelly estimates the amount of time to clear a complex area has been reduced by one-third, which often means an additional machine is not required. Due to its ability to conform to surface contours, the ActivEdge more effectively clears the area, reducing the necessity for additional passes or excessive salt applied post scrape.

Although decreasing operator time is important to Outdoor Pride, Kelly said there are other ancillary factors that contribute to the ROI. A major factor is the ability of the equipment to withstand the rigors of annual snow clearing.

The QuattroPlows the company purchased seven years ago are still in service and other than new edges from time to time have required very little maintenance.

“The [attachment] is an investment, but from what we have found, it is an investment that gives us results and lasts,” said Kelly.

“We are experiencing significant ROI in decreased operator time to get through an entire property. We also see it in the longevity of the product.”

While the initial cost of equipment like snow plows or pushers can be a significant factor, it is essential to evaluate their longterm benefits, including increased efficiency,

These attachments offer more flexible choices that allow a variety of movements in tight spaces, while adding to the value of skid steers, which are specifically designed to be nimble.

better quality of clearing, and the ability to handle more jobs.

By opting for more flexible and nimble attachments, snow removal services can enhance their operational efficiency and effectiveness. When the ROI is carefully analyzed, it becomes evident that the initial higher investment in advanced attachments

pays off, making them an indispensable component of modern snow removal strategies. For more information, call SnowWolf at 800/905-2265, email info@snowwolfplows.com or visit www.snowwolfplows.com.  (All photos courtesy of SnowWolf.)

Transportation construction companies from three states were recognized Sept. 23 for their outstanding employee safety programs during the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) national convention in Amelia Island, Fla.

The annual ARTBA “Contractor Safety Awards” promote worker safety and health as core values of the transportation design and construction industry. Granite Construction was named safety program “Grand Champion.” The judges were impressed with Granite’s empowerment of their workers to enhance safety on every work site, as well as its communicating safety concerns and solutions to its employees.

Companies were competitively selected based on their accident and injury rates on worksites as reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration

(OSHA); their Experience Modification Rates (EMRs) as determined by their insurance carriers; and their safety programs. Finalists from three categories based on personnel hours worked in the previous year were invited to present before a panel of industry judges.

Selection criteria also included demonstration of key principles of safety excellence including management commitment, employee participation, incident investigation, auditing, planning and risk assessment.

The awards were presented as follows:

• Less than 500,000 personnel hours: Perry Engineering, Winchester, Va.

• 500,000 to 1 million: Texas Sterling, Houston, Texas

• More than 1 million: Granite Construction, Watsonville, Calif.

NUCA of Metro DC’s

Education Foundation Grants Scholarships

The board of directors of the National Utility Contractors Association of Metro DC’s Foundation for Education (the Foundation) announced the recipients of its 2024 scholarships.

The Foundation was launched in 2017 to support young leaders interested in the construction and utility excavation industries. The scholarship program supports our strategic goal of ensuring the continuing legacy of professionals in the utility construction workforce. The Foundation annually awards academic scholarships to rising high school seniors, current college, graduate or vocational tech school students. Scholarship awardees are represented in all academic backgrounds. Pursuing a field of study relevant to the construction industry is a plus. The scholarship is funded by the generosity of its members throughout the year.

Gabriel Santos, president of Blueridge of DC, and president of NUCA of DC and the Foundation said, “We are very proud of the students who were awarded the scholarships and wish them well in their studies.”

“While not all are going into the utilities and construction industry, it is an honor to help our members and their families with financial support in their pursuit of continuing education,” said Christy Walika, executive director of NUCA of Metro DC.

This year, the Foundation had the most applications since its inception.

The 2024 recipients and their sponsoring NUCA of DC members are:

• Erick Alegría — CW & Sons

• Jenna Cackowski — Fortiline Waterworks

• Akayla Diamond —ReAgg LLC

• Maggie Hennessy — Washington Air Compressor Rental

• Molly Mouillesseuax —Flippo Construction

• Gabrielle Stine — Miss Utility

Advances in Tech Can Boost Equipment Recovery Odds

monitor locations.

Deploy Surveillance, a mobile unit provider, said these units are ideal for construction sites because they can be quickly deployed.

The units can be set up to monitor the site 24/7 via advanced analytics and an offsite monitoring center.

“If an event is ever triggered, everything is recorded in crystal clear video using combination HD, thermal and night vision cameras,” said the company.

Some units can record and read the license plate of a fleeing vehicle hundreds of feet away, said Deploy.

“The knowledge that the construction site is being monitored can dissuade thieves and vandals from attempting to break in or steal equipment.”

Heavy equipment theft costs the United States construction industry an estimated $400 million every year. Inadequate perimeter fencing, lack of surveillance systems and poor record-keeping can contribute to the problem for contractors.

Alarms can be installed on the surveillance units to alert the company’s security team if there is an intrusion or other security breach. This, then, can help to quickly notify law enforcement or security personnel to respond to the site and prevent theft or damage.

“Not only that, but some units have builtin speaker systems that allow the agent to address the intruder live via the mobile surveillance unit,” said Deploy.

The video feeds and alarm systems can be accessed remotely, and motion detection sensors can alert when there is movement on the site.

Business security system provider Safe and Sound suggests other ways to prevent construction site theft, starting with identifying marks on your assets. Simply engrave serial numbers or other identifying marks on tools and vehicles.

“Most construction materials around your job site are expensive and easily fenced, making them easy targets for potential thieves,” said Safe and Sound.

Copper tubing and wiring in particular demand a high price. Vehicles often lack standardized serial numbers, making them easy to strip for parts to sell.

“Engraving serial numbers or other identifying marks on your tools and vehicles is a great way to start if you’re concerned,” said the security provider. “As a bonus, it can also help keep your records more organized and smooth out your administrative process.”

Fully securing your site requires a construction site security system designed

specifically for the construction industry. That means video monitoring service, time-lapse or motion-activated surveillance cameras in strategic locations. Securing a commercial construction site is generally done with temporary wireless cameras connected to a cellular network.

Hardwired security cameras are even more powerful than their wireless counterparts for projects that have access continuous power at the site.

“While they’re much more expensive, these edge-solution cameras are typically an entire surveillance system in themselves,” said the security provider.

Some systems are even capable of securing your entire site from a single vantage point. The downside is the power requirement, said the company.

“A cut wire will disable your surveillance, and it will be difficult to trace stolen equipment.”

Back in Oregon, Sorenson told kezi.com he was considering installing cameras or arranging for security patrols on the job site.

But since the two machines were not needed for the next phase of construction, they’d simply been moved away.

“Ideally, we don’t want to mobilize on and off a job site over and over again,” he said. “So, we’d leave the equipment here until the next phase begins. But with the damage that’s been done, it’s not worth the risk. So, we’ll haul it back to the yard and bring it back out.”
