PennDOT Preserves McKees Rocks Bridge

A project to preserve a Pittsburgh, Pa., bridge will be complete by next summer, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

The $40.8 million McKees Rocks Bridge Preservation project is fully funded by the state. The contract was awarded to Brayman Construction and Advantage Steel.

“It’s running longer than the original schedule because we added a lot of work, but we are on schedule with the work that we have,” said Jason Zang, district executive. He noted that work was added because of advanced deterioration that was not anticipated and unforeseen field conditions.

The location extends between Route 51 (Island Ave.) and Route 65 (Ohio River Blvd.) and includes sidewalk replacement, sidewalk support steel repairs, sidewalk railing painting, full-depth concrete pavement reconstruction of the road and two ramps at Helen Street, ADA curb ramp installation, approach pavement work at intersections of Routes 65 and 51, barrier replacement and upgrade, deck overhang and spall repair, railroad fencing installation and other miscellaneous construction. As work occurs, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction.

Crews Complete Phase 2 of Massive Queens Sewer Program

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced the completion of a $106 million infrastructure project in Maspeth, Queens that is the second of three that are creating a new drainage network through central Queens.

The project also upgraded over a mile of water mains and replaced smaller, local combined and sanitary sewers. DDC managed the project for DEP and DOT, and successfully used micro-tunneling technology throughout large parts of it to minimize construction impacts during work.

The project is the second in a series of three that is creating a major new drainage network through central Queens, and connects at several points to work that was pre-

Micro-tunneling techniques eliminated the need for disruptive open trench construction through a residential neighborhood. Here a crane prepares to lower segments of

viously completed by DDC in parts of 69th Street and Calamus Avenue in Middle Village. That earlier $19.5 million project, which installed 2,600 ft. of new sewer using open trench construction, created excessive noise and disruptions for local residents and was halted early, with the remaining work moved to the recently completed project so that micro-tunneling could be employed.

The third project currently is being designed in-house at DDC and is expected to start construction in mid-2026 with an estimated budget of roughly $80 million. That project will connect with the recently completed work at the Long Island Expressway and extend the new drainage system south to

roughly Juniper Boulevard South.

“This $106 million project is part of DEP’s commitment to building a new drainage network through Central Queens, which will alleviate the flooding caused by extreme weather,” said DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala. “We will continue to partner with DDC and DOT to invest in infrastructure upgrades that create more resilient communities, allowing us to better manage stormwater and protect our residents from climate change.”

“When the first project in this important new drainage system proved too disruptive to the community, DDC stopped work, changed its approach and used micro-tunneling instead, including in a very sensitive and busy area where crews tunneled under Queens Boulevard,” said NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Thomas Foley. “With projects like these, plus the massive Southeast Queens Initiative, DDC, DEP and DOT are investing billions of dollars in Queens drainage and street upgrades.”

Overall, the project installed about 3,625 ft. of new 96-in. diameter combined sewer plus about 900 ft. of new box sewers up to 12 ft. by 8 ft. and about 300 ft. of 84-in. HOBAS sewers. Additionally, approximately 1,300 ft. of combined sewer were replaced. About 5,500 ft. of water mains up to 90 years old were replaced with new ductile iron pipes, a more durable material.

One location where micro-tunneling was particularly effective is where the new sewer crosses under Queens Boulevard. Engineers estimated it would have taken months and

the new 96-in. diameter sewer down a shaft so they can be installed in the new tunnel below the street.

DDC, DEP and elected officials celebrated the completion of the $106 million project in Maspeth, Queens, on Oct. 4, 2024.

AED Foundation Brings Students to Apprenticeship Event

On Oct. 8, high school students from across Chicagoland took significant steps toward careers in the equipment industry by learning essential diesel engine repair skills, trying their hand at operating equipment, polishing their interview techniques, and connecting with industry leaders.

Hosted by AEDF in collaboration with SkillsUSA Illinois and its Youth Workforce Development Foundation (YWDF), the Industry Pathways: Career Experience brought more than 500 students from 20 regional schools and career centers together with employers and unions. These young participants received firsthand insights into careers as diesel technicians and equipment operators, helping address the equipment industry’s critical workforce needs.

This event, held at Johnsburg High School, was made possible by $8 million in federal funding that the YWDF and AEDF secured as part of the Apprenticeships Build America program earlier this summer. These funds support workforce development initiatives that engage youth across the country, demonstrating AEDF’s ongoing commitment to developing a skilled workforce that meets national demand. Throughout the day, students engaged in hands-on experiences, operating machinery, participating in mock job interviews, and building connections with potential employers actively seeking new talent.

“The AED Foundation is committed to equipping the next generation with skills and opportunities,” said Sean Fitzgerrel, vice president, AEDF. “We thank the Youth Workforce Development Foundation, the federal government and our industry partners for supporting our vision to bring real career opportunities to students across the nation. Together, we are raising awareness and building the essential connections that will strengthen and secure the future of a skilled workforce in our industry.”

Emergency Repairs Set for Bridge Over Delaware River

The historic Skinners Falls/Milanville bridge that once carried traffic across the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New York, but has been closed for the last five years, is set for emergency repairs later this fall to protect boaters and the waters below.

Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is proposing to replace the Calkins Creek bridge next to the Milanville General Store on nearby River Road. Both structures are just a short distance apart in the state’s far northeastern corner.

PennDOT plans to keep one lane open at a time during construction of the Calkins Creek bridge, rather than imposing a long detour.

The old bridge to Skinners Falls on the New York side of the Delaware River, however, will remain shuttered pending a decision on the ultimate fate of the one-lane bridge linking the two states, the Tri-County Independent in Honesdale, Pa. reported Oct. 10.

Bridge Pieces Have Fallen Into Delaware

On Aug. 2, the Upper Delaware Council (UDC), a two-state group that manages the scenic and recreational river, notified PennDOT of the urgent need for an emergency inspection of the Skinners Falls bridge after heavily-rusted metal parts were seen falling into the waterway by UDC representa-

tives.

As a result, PennDOT announced in late August that it would begin removing some of the loose bridge components, a project that will continue throughout this autumn.

Warning signs and buoys will be installed both upstream and downstream of the bridge and temporary protective netting to the superstructure will be erected. The agency undertook emergency procedures to obtain state funding for the netting.

The 1902 suspension bridge, listed on the National Register for Historic Places, was shuttered in 2019 to all traffic, including walkers and bicycles, due to its deteriorating condition. It had undergone emergency repairs several times before, and the structure’s weight limit was lowered twice.

By closing the span, immediate access to emergency services from the New York side was cut off, as well as use by the public.

PennDOT, in coordination with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), conducted a Planning and Environmental Linkages Study last spring to identify transportation purpose and needs, and weighed various scenarios for the fate of the Skinners Falls bridge, including estimated costs, the Honesdale news source noted.

Among their considerations were:

• Leaving the bridge as is.

• Demolishing and scrapping it.

• Removal and relocation.

• Two degrees of rehabilitation.

• Full replacement.

Public meetings and a survey also have been conducted to help decide what to do with the bridge.

The UDC, which advocates for rehabilitation to retain the bridge’s historic character, commented in its Aug. 2 letter, “[We remain] dismayed over how protracted and costly (at nearly $4 million) this Planning and Environmental Linkages Study has been since the beloved historic bridge was closed to all traffic on Oct. 16, 2019. It’s inevitable that the bridge continues to structurally decay while awaiting the determination of its fate.”

Skinners Falls, in rural Sullivan County, N.Y., is part of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River system and is maintained by the National Park Service. Just a few yards south of the old span, Sinners Falls also boasts of having one of the most popular river accesses along the Upper Delaware.

Calkins Creek Bridge to Get New Look

In its Oct. 1 announcement about the Calkins Creek Bridge, PennDOT asked for

public comment regarding the proposal to replace the River Road structure, located within walking distance of the Skinners Falls/Milanville bridge.

Once the Calkins Creek superstructure replacement is complete, the new bridge will accommodate pedestrians with a wider shoulder on the upstream side of the roadway, according to PennDOT.

Additionally, the transportation agency plans to powder coat the bridge beams, abutments, wingwalls, and guiderails with the brown color “typically used by the National Park Service,” PennDOT said. The Independent also learned that the state plans to use an architectural surface blue stone pattern for the bridge elevations.

“Scour protection material [rip rap] around the abutments will incorporate local stone that is intended to match the form liner [bridge elevations],” PennDOT explained.

When work gets under way, traffic control will include a single-lane, alternating pattern controlled by temporary signals during halfwidth construction. PennDOT also will accommodate pedestrians during construction using a designated signal phase to allow them to safely cross the bridge on temporary lanes.

The Milanville General Store on the south end of the bridge is a historic landmark in the Wayne County, Pa. community. 

Amtrak Breaks Ground On Philly Train Maintenance Facility

Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner was joined by Federal Railroad Administrator Amit Bose, White House Deputy Assistant to the President for Infrastructure Implementation Samantha Silverberg and Rail Passengers Association President and CEO Jim Mathews to celebrate the start of construction for Amtrak’s new heavy maintenance facility at Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia.

“This new maintenance facility is critical to upgrading the customer experience with new state-of-the-art trains, combined with our other major infrastructure projects,” said Gardner. “This project and several others like it will help drive continued ridership growth and future service expansion thanks to funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and continued support from the Biden-Harris Administration, Congress and many other partners around the country.”

“This project is an example of the progress that the Biden-Harris administration is making to realize the President’s vision for world-class passenger rail,” said Silverberg. “President Biden knows firsthand the importance of reliable train service which is why he secured the largest investment in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak in his Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This project will enable the efficient maintenance of Amtrak’s new Airo and Acela trains in Philadelphia to keep the trains running on time so that people can get to where they work, live and play.”

“Under the Biden-Harris Administration and through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are putting historic rail investments to work to advance major projects and upgrade vital infrastructure like Amtrak’s Penn Coach Yard,” said FRA Administrator Amit Bose. The Administration’s investments are modernizing and expanding passenger rail in the Northeast and beyond and helping to deliver the world-class rail Americans deserve, said FRA Administrator Amit Bose.

“Upgrades at Amtrak’s Penn Coach Yard near Philadelphia’s Gray 30th Street Station will drastically improve train maintenance, reduce train turnaround times, and more, resulting in more reliable and frequent passenger rail service for people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and riders up and down the Northeast Corridor.”

America’s passengers have been waiting for many decades to see this kind of longoverdue investment in the future of our rail network, which will make the trains we ride cleaner, safer, and more reliable,” said Mathews. “It’s yet another example of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s historic funding levels making a meaningful difference for the fare-paying public, and we’re

The new maintenance facility at Penn Coach Yard is one of Amtrak’s many rail yard and facility investments planned around the country to support new trains that will begin serving customers in the coming years. It is also the first in this program to begin construction.

thrilled to see this important project — one of six around the country — move forward.”

When it opens in 2027, the new heavy maintenance facility will improve the customer and employee experience by speeding up train maintenance and reducing turnaround times, due to more modern maintenance practices. The new facility will be used for daily inspections, service and cleaning, along with life cycle maintenance and heavy maintenance repairs. These upgrades will enable more reliable and frequent service across Pennsylvania and the Northeast Corridor (NEC), America’s busiest passenger railroad.

The $462 million project is funded entirely by the Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This new facility will service many of Amtrak’s Acela,

Northeast Regional, Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian trains that operate up and down the NEC, which today provides more than 12 million annual Amtrak trips and continues to grow.

Earlier this spring, Amtrak awarded a design-build construction contract for the new maintenance facility. Construction will take place within the existing rail yard footprint in two phases and require relocating existing functions currently spread around Penn Coach Yard into one consolidated multifunctional facility.

The new heavy maintenance facility will encompass nearly 350,000 sq. ft. within the existing rail yard footprint, featuring a twobay Maintenance and Inspection (M&I) facility with inspection pits, a drop table and fueling pads at each end, as well as two adjacent Service and Cleaning (S&C) tracks.

Additional upgrades include a new direct fixation track within the M&I and S&C areas; removal of existing and installation of new catenary (electric power) structures; new retaining walls and storage buildings; utility relocations and more. No major customer impacts are expected as a result of this project.

The new maintenance facility at Penn Coach Yard is one of Amtrak’s many rail yard and facility investments planned around the country to support new trains that will begin serving customers in the coming years. It is also the first in this program to begin construction.

Six major rail yards (five in the Northeast and one in the Pacific Northwest, where a construction contract was just awarded) will be upgraded with new facilities to support maintenance activities, routine inspections, equipment repairs and minor service and cleaning needs. Several layover sites outside the NEC also will be built or renovated. These are located along existing routes where trains are cleaned, serviced or stored, such as Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, Penn.

Amtrak is transforming train travel with brand new trains slated to replace a majority of the existing fleet, and these rail yard upgrades will advance the company’s new era of passenger rail. Amtrak Airo manufacturing has ramped up, New Acela testing is underway, and procurement has formally begun to replace the current Long Distance fleet.

Chicago Asphalt Contractor Embraces Electric Vehicles

Nearly 100 years old, Gallagher Asphalt is a fourth-generation, family-owned business with 225 employees. The Chicago-based company has four asphalt plants and numerous vehicles.

Dan Gallagher, CEO of the company, recently participated in the industry group The Road Forward. Composed of contractors, association members and academics, the group discussed how to implement ways to reduce the construction industry’s carbon footprint.

Q: You have stated that sustainability has always been an important issue for the asphalt industry.

A: Yes. Some 50 years ago, the industry began emphasizing recycled asphalt as a means of saving money without compromising road performance. That has been very successful. I appreciate the work done by organizations like the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) in helping us to learn about how to build longer-lasting pavements. That’s a key part of sustainability and reducing our energy consumption.

Now there is an opportunity to begin using electric vehicles as a part of our fleets. Sustainability lines up with reducing energy consumption.

Q: How did you first learn about electric vehicles and think about using them in construction?

A: It began when I was coming out of church one Sunday when I saw a Tesla in the parking lot. I met the owner, and he insisted on taking me, my son and a friend for a ride. He pulled onto the road and

impressed me with the vehicle’s acceleration. I drive to Springfield, the state capital a few times a year, to Peoria and other cities, so I started clocking my mileage. I wanted to see where the charging stations were. I thought I could make this work and decided to get a Tesla.

I got my first Tesla in 2015. I had always driven an SUV or pickup, so, this was a first for me. I now have 185,000 miles and have not changed the brakes yet.

I haven’t once regretted my decision to go electric. It has convinced me that electric vehicles are the future.

Q: What about the drawbacks — range, etc.?

A: Technology is always moving rapidly forward. Our industry is good at being flexible. I believe we are going to see the same thing in battery technology. My car has a 250-mi. range when I purchased it in 2015 and now after nine years and 185,000 mi., I get 226 mi. on a charge. I still have the original battery. Manufacturers are coming out with a more than 400-mi. range now. In the next year or so, it might be up to 500 mi.

Six of our employees own/drive Teslas. I have ordered four electric pick-ups as well as a semi. I have taken delivery of one Cybertruck and it is a great truck. We have charging stations here at the office and, of course, people can charge their vehicles at home. I can see this expanding beyond just personal use to commercial use.

Q: How will having electric vehicles change your business?

A: The vehicles have fewer mechanical parts, so they should be easier to service.

We usually aren’t doing too many long hauls, and these trips would be easily in the range of the battery. It’s going to make

believers out of truck drivers. Most people are slow to change, but I believe they will soon see the advantages of electric vehicles.

I believe when the semis arrive, they will be like my car with smooth acceleration and regenerative braking that will generate electricity to power the vehicles. I believe the new trucks will have less wear and tear on brakes, adding more life to the vehicles. And, of course, the vehicles will not need oil changes and some other routine maintenance.

Q: Other vehicles as well?

A: As battery technology advances, I can see a day when more and more of the construction fleet will be electric, including rollers, pavers and dozers. I’m not sure how it would work in the field — perhaps a battery swap?

Q: What are some of the other considerations that the industry needs to be aware of?

A: For electric cars, there were several tax breaks available. Those breaks have been removed because manufacturers have sold enough vehicles. But that might happen for semis. Of course, it would be nice if there were more places on the road to stop and charge. I’m not big on tax breaks. I believe technology has to prove itself. Still, I believe there is a movement in the industry that will

help these innovations through various kinds of incentives.

At our asphalt plants, we have plenty of power, which would make them good places to charge the electric vehicles. We would be charging off-peak, and there are incentives for that. There are benefits to that instead of facing the challenges of having to find a place on the road to charge.

Q: How would you compare the costs of electric versus gas- or diesel-powered vehicles?

A: The electric vehicles could be up to one-third of the cost to operate. Of course, the vehicles will cost more to purchase. But this is a case of being an early adopter to new technology. For example, Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y are more reasonably priced than the newly released vehicles.

I know from my travels there are apps you can use to find charging locations. Not all of them are dedicated to Teslas. As the price of batteries continues to fall, the savings will increase dramatically.

Volvo Expands Soil Compactor Lineup With 12-Ton Model

Volvo Construction Equipment is broadening its compaction range in North America with a new model targeting medium- to heavy-duty compaction jobs.

The new SD125 soil compactor is designed to provide exceptional results with low operating and ownership costs, making it a fit for both rental houses and highway contractors, according to the manufacturer.

The 12-ton machine becomes the largest model in the Volvo soil compaction portfolio with an 84-in. smooth-drum and operating weight of 26,565 lbs. (12,050 kg). Its specs are similar to the existing SD115 but with a 0.2 in. (5 mm) thicker drum shell and a heavier outer eccentric weight. This results in an additional 935 lbs. (424 kg) of mass on the drum, increasing the static load and eccentric force for a different amplitude profile.

“The SD125 is a direct response to dealers and customers who have asked for a machine that combines the quality and performance of the SD115 with the heavier weight of a 12-ton machine,” said Justin Zupanc, compaction product manager. “We take feedback seriously, and I think this model shows that.”

As terrain and material depths change, the ability to adjust dynamic drum forces is as simple as the flip of a switch on the new

SD125. Another switch adjusts the two drum frequencies to compensate for changing conditions, and a five-frequency feature is available as an option to further boost versatility and performance.

The center joint provides +/-35 degrees of articulation and +/-12 degrees of drum oscillation for stable yet flexible performance and greater operator comfort over rough terrain. Because the drum is in constant contact with the ground, compaction is smooth and uniform.

The additional static weight on the drum frame enhances stability and performance with the ability to negotiate 35 percent slopes for better gradeability. The angled frame allows higher clearance in the approach to steep slopes and while loading, eliminating the possibility of damaging the surface or the machine. The frame and articulation joint are covered by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty.

A heavy-duty axle is integrated into the drivetrain for an efficient rear wheel drive system. The No-Spin differential increases traction, eliminates tire slippage and improves gradeability, performance and

productivity. A high-traction variant is available for demanding applications where additional torque is needed to tackle extreme slopes or thick lifts of loose material.

All three levels of Compact Assist software are available on the in-cab tablet (the Volvo Co-Pilot) allowing users to determine the visibility, mapping and reporting features that are most important to them.

The SD125 features a powerful Tier IV F four-cylinder Volvo engine with 147.5 hp (110 kW). Active DPF regeneration eliminates material build-up, further reducing emissions. The engine is backed by Volvo dealer service and parts support and a

1,000-hour warranty.

Additional features include:

• A hydraulically operated engine cooling fan that runs only when needed, reducing fuel consumption.

• Lower noise levels for operator comfort.

• Optional fan reverse for cleaning out the coolers.

• Volvo long-life coolant to protect the machine for up to 6,000 hours.

• Remote hydraulic test ports that can be configured to enable quick and easy hydraulic checkpoints without having to open the system.

In line with the Volvo commitment to safety, the emergency stop system shuts down the engine, applies the brakes and stops the machine’s movement if the operator rises from the seat for more than five seconds during operation.

The SD125 is designed and built at the Volvo CE North American headquarters in Shippensburg, Pa., along with all Volvo asphalt and soil compactors. This year marks 50 years of compaction engineering and manufacturing at the site.

The SD125 will be available for order in North America during the first half of 2025.

FAE RCU75 Can Now Be Equipped

With RPL/SSL-45 Asphalt Shredder

FAE expands its range for the construction sector with a new combination of asphalt shredder and RCU tracked carrier.

Now, with a special installation kit, the RCU75 can be equipped with an RPL/SSL-45 asphalt shredder. The addition of this attachment allows FAE to offer customers a wider range of solutions, capable of addressing specific needs across industries.

The RPL/SSL-45 is compatible with the RCU75, can mill up to 7 in. deep and has a working width of 17 in. The head comes standard with modern technological features. The combination of self-leveling skids and tilt ensures optimal results even on uneven surfaces. Operational precision is ensured by the hydraulic drive system — which makes it possible to work right up against a wall on the right or left side — as well as practical depth and cutting indicators. The water system with integrated tank allows for the

elimination of dust from machining operations and contributes to cooling the teeth. It also has special teeth, designed specifically for use on asphalt and concrete road surfaces.

FAE’s road planers are based on “cold planer” technology. With cold planer technology, the road’s surface is scraped and cut by the impact of special teeth attached to the rotor. The RPL/SSL-45 has a specially designed tooth layout to increase performance and reduce vibration, making it the perfect tool to prepare roads for resurfacing, or to simplify excavation operations.

With these new products, FAE has enhanced its catalog for the construction world, an increasingly important sector in which FAE technology and quality continue to drive innovation.

Acco Creates Monster Machines: Super Dozer, Motorgrader

In the early 1980s, Umberto Acco, an entrepreneur and owner of a civil construction company in Portogruaro, northern Italy, received a job that would require his company to build a custom crawler dozer and motorgrader.

The machines needed to be big — really big — and were intended to be used on a project that involved moving earth — lots of earth — in large, desert areas.

per hub.

While many components of the dozer had to be custom made, including the blade, Acco used mainly Caterpillar parts to build what has become known as ‘Super Dozer’— the world’s largest bulldozer.

As of 2018, it also is the most powerful tracked dozer ever made.

How Big Is Big?

The specs for the more-than-40-ft., 183ton crawler dozer are dizzying. Two 8-cylinder, 675 hp Caterpillar diesel engines combine for a 1,350 hp output. The blade measures 23 ft. wide and 9 ft. high. The rear ripper (a claw-like device) measures 10 ft. and is powered by hydraulic rams.

The tracks were custom made by Berco. The transmission operates through two drive sprockets for each track to create torque generated from the engines. The brakes and control mechanisms are operated hydraulically. This massive piece of iron was the only one of its kind produced.

For comparison, Caterpillar’s largest model, the D11 dozer, is 115 tons, 35.8 ft. long, 14.9 ft. wide, had a 22 ft. blade and operates at 850 hp.

The world’s largest production dozer is Komatsu’s D575A 168-ton, 1,050-hp dozer. This machine measures 38 ft. 5 in. long, 24 ft. 3 in. wide and has a 11 ft. 11 in. blade.

Motorgrader

The world’s biggest motorgrader also was created in 1980 for the same project. It had two engines: the 700 hp front end articulated from the 1,000 hp rear end. It measured more than 24 ft.; weighed 200 tons; had a 33 ft. blade; and had a total of 12 tires — two

While in storage, the machine became a tourist attraction. It did not survive its time in storage and has been dismantled and sold for scrap.

Major Roadblock

The dozer and motorgrader were to be used for a massive earthmoving project in Libya. It is unclear whether the machines were to be used for a pipelaying project or for other land-development but just as the dozer was completed, Colonel Gaddafi encountered an embargo by the United Nations, which included trade restrictions. The Acco dozer and motorgrader could not be shipped to Libya.

The dozer was operated only once on a job in southern Italy. However, the cost of transporting it was prohibitive and both machines were placed in storage and maintained at the factory where they were built.

Umberto Acco passed away in 2006 without appointing successors to the company. The decision was made not to continue with Acco’s innovations and the business was shuttered. The property became a dumping ground for various earthmoving machines, including the giant dozer and motorgrader.

Second Chance

In 2012, an old friend and neighbor of Acco, Dino e Rino Valerio, who also is a collector of historic vehicles, saved the dozer from demolition. He purchased the monster machine and arranged for heavy transport to a new location. Although Valerio passed away in 2012, today the dozer is safely stored and on display with the rest of his collection for public viewing at the family’s Bejaflor nursery.  CEG

John Deere Premieres Its Next Phase of P-Tier Dozers

Improving its product portfolio of large dozer offerings, John Deere introduces the 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier dozers as part of its performance tiering strategy.

Previously in market as the 950K and 1050K, these robust machines are the next generation of models to join the increasing lineup of John Deere P-Tier dozers.

The new 1050 P-Tier dozer boasts an increase in engine power and a redesigned hood and front-end design. In addition, both the 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier offer enhanced visibility and improved safety features, positioning them as an ideal solution for operators aiming to boost productivity and protection on the job site, according to the manufacturer.

“John Deere is dedicated to providing its customers with large dozer options that fit the needs of every job site, and the new PTier machines offer the durability and reliability our customers demand from machines of this size class”, said Matt Costello, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry.

“The 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier dozer models were updated with the customer in mind, helping them increase efficiency, visibility and gradeability in even the most

demanding conditions.”

The strategic design enhancements of the new P-Tier dozer models aim to improve operator safety, visibility on the job and uptime. Now equipped with standard LEDs, operator efficiency has been significantly improved during night-time or low-light operations. Also helping to improve uptime, the cold weather hydraulic lines are specially tailored for cold climate operations. These hoses, which replace the standard option, are rated for lower temperatures, ensuring smooth hydraulic function in harsh winter and weather conditions.

The cab of the 950 P-Tier and 1050 PTier can be tilted for easy serviceability access under the cab.

Taking safety to the next level, the Operator Presence System ensures that an operator is present in the seat of the cab, with the seat belt fastened, before the park break can be released. This ensures a critical layer of safety, preventing accidental movement or operation before the operator is buckled in. The P-Tier system also integrates the park brake switch into the system status monitor, eliminating the need for traditional park lock levers. This inte-

gration not only streamlines the operation process but also enhances the overall safety mechanism of the machine.

Enhancing operator comfort and functionality, both models now feature a premium heated and ventilated seat option, which is air-suspended with adjustment controls for optimal ergonomics. The seat design remains at a 15-degree angle to provide optimal comfort when operating the rear ripper. The updated cab features new ergonomic controls, neutral counter rotate, and an integrated forward neutral reverse switch. This ergonomic focus ensures operators can work for extended periods with reduced physical strain, helping to enhance productivity on the job site.

Remaining the largest Power-Angle-Tilt (PAT) dozer in the market, the 950 P-Tier dozer features SmartGrade, John Deere factory integrated mastless 3D grade control. This machine has the power for heavy cuts and the finesse to finish grade.

Receiving a significant increase in operational advantages upon its entry to the PTier portfolio, the newly upgraded 1050 PTier dozer boasts a range of features and enhancements that boost overall functionality and efficiency. One notable upgrade is

the tag link and blade design that brings the blade 10 in. closer to the frame.

Along with the tag link, inverted tilt and pitch cylinders were added. The inverted tilt and pitch cylinders, lowered hood and larger front window help improve operator visibility to the blade. The repositioning of the 168-in. blade, due to the updated tag link design, paired with double-bogie undercarriage provides operators with a more balanced machine and a clearer view of the blade corners, which is a critical factor for precision work.

In terms of power, the 1050 P-Tier dozer features a revamped JD14 (13.6 L) engine which replaces the 13.5 L engine in the 1050K. The JD14 enhances durability, reduces fuel consumption and uses a single canister in the aftertreatment system to meet emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter.

Lastly, on the 1050 P-Tier, the new cooling system has been redesigned with a single plane layout, positioning coolers sideby-side instead of stacked. This new design not only improves cooling efficiency but also simplifies access for cleaning.

DD130 Dozer Provides Productivity in Fine-Grading Applications

The DD130 dozer is a new addition to the current DEVELON dozer lineup. The DD130 dozer will offer a productive fine-grading solution for residential and light commercial construction.

DEVELON, formerly Doosan construction equipment, entered the North American dozer market in 2022 with a smaller dozer size, the DD100, competing in the 140-hp and under category in 2022. After much anticipation from dealers and customers, the first DD100 dozers made their way to dealerships and eventually customer jobsites in Q3 2022.

“The new DD130 dozer will build on the success of the DD100 with many of the same popular features,” said Moo Young Park, engineering manager at DEVELON. “The feedback from our dealers and customers after the launch of the DD100 was very positive, and we hope to continue the momentum with the larger DD130 dozer for the North American construction industry.”

Productivity

The DD130 dozer delivers more horsepower, better tractive effort and superior pushing power to help operators move more material and get more in the done pile. Productivity is driven by the dozer’s 6-way variable angle pitch blade. Customers can choose from two blade options: a standard 4.6 cu. yd. blade or an optional 5.5 cu. yd. capacity blade. The blade moves freely to lift, tilt and angle, and 2way mechanical adjustments can change the blade pitch to control how steeply the blade will dig into the ground.

Visibility

One of the biggest differences between the DD130 dozer and other brands is the visibility to the machine’s blade. The front engine compartment offers a narrower design to make it easier for operators to see their work.

The precleaner is tucked away in the engine compartment to maximize front visibility.

The electronic cooling system was moved to the back of the dozer to further improve front visibility.

The cab’s low-profile front pillars provide maximum glass area.

All-glass doors provide a full view of the working environment.

For further visibility and safety, a standard rearview camera provides operators with an additional view of the dozer’s surroundings. The full-color, 8-inch Smart Touch display shows the rearview camera view. Also standard are high-illumination LED lights and four premium wiper blades.

Technology

Advanced technologies in the DD130 dozer deliver more precision to help operators meet exacting specifications. A 2D grading system option is available to make precision grading easier, even for novice operators.

Serviceability

The DD130 comes standard with an electronically operated tilting cab that provides access to internal components. Even with the cab tilted, the dozer can be started while the machine is being diagnosed or repaired.

An in-line precleaner, which comes standard, helps improve filter life and is integrated with the air cleaner. It’s also more compact to fit in the smaller engine compartment. Self-cleaning and maintenance-free, the intake system can expel a variety of debris, including mud, snow, leaves, sawdust and chaff.

The dozer undercarriage is designed for convenience and cost-effective maintenance. Areas of the undercarriage that naturally experience greater wear and tear are easy to access. For example, a removable side panel provides access to an area to add grease to the undercarriage’s tension system. Customers can order replacement parts through their local dealer.

A telematics system is a standard feature on the DD130 dozer, making it easy for customers to remotely monitor and maintain their machine. They can monitor the health, location and productivity of the dozer from a user-friendly mobile app and website. The customer’s dealer can also see the equipment status and notify them when it’s time for service to minimize machine downtime.

HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America announced the expansion of its product line into crawler dozers with the availability of its first new dozer model, the 115 net hp (86 kW) Hyundai HD100.

The addition of dozers to the Hyundai product line broadens its line of earthmoving equipment, which already includes wheel loaders, hydraulic excavators, articulated dump trucks, skid steers and compact track loaders, as well as equipment designed for material handling in specialized applications.

“The new HD100 dozer will be a great addition to the equipment fleets of earthmoving contractors, forestry, waste handlers and other customers who already enjoy the benefits of using Hyundai wheel loaders and excavators,” said Mike Ross, senior VP, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America. “It’s further evidence of the Hyundai commitment to providing the right solution for a wide range of earthmoving and material-handling applications.”

David Spooner, product manager, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America, said, “This new Hyundai dozer delivers best-in-class power-to-weight ratio and the best visibility to the dozer blade. Our dealers and customers, especially in landscaping and forestry, have already expressed a lot of interest in this machine.

“Customers know that, when they buy a machine with the Hyundai name, they will get a full-featured machine with more standard features, as well as Hyundai’s industry-leading warranty and support from Hyundai’s expanding network of dealers.”

He said the Hyundai HD100 dozer is designed to be heavier and deliver more power and tractive ability than other dozers in its size class. The machine’s undercarriage system includes dual-flange rollers outside the chain of the track and single-flange rollers inside the chain of the track to help ensure the track stays on the undercarriage to reduce wear and provide greater operator comfort.

The Hyundai HD100 dozer is a 10-ton-class machine with a standard blade capacity of 2.9-cu. yd. and a digging depth of 1 ft. 6 in. The fuel-efficient 4-cylinder Hyundai G2 DM03 engine meets Tier IV Final emissions standards. Standard operating weight is 23,589 lb., and track length on the ground is 108 in. A hydrostatic transmission provides

smooth control of speed and torque while enhancing ease of operation.

Superior Visibility, Grading Precision Increase Productivity, Efficiency

The Hyundai HD100 dozer offers superior visibility to the standard 6-way angle blade. Positioning the electronic cooling system at the back of the machine results in an unobstructed view of the blade.

Further adding to the excellent visibility to the working end of the dozer are the narrow front hood, placement of the inline pre-cleaner under the hood, minimized cab pillars and maximized glass areas including all-glass doors. A rearview camera, high-illumination LED lights and four premium wiper blades are all standard.

The standard 6-way variable-angle-pitch dozer blade — with a maximum angle of 25 degrees — delivers more precision when grading or moving dirt, clay and other materials. The standard blade float function is ideal for fine finishing or smooth back grading.

The machine is compatible with grading technologies that help even novice operators work faster and more precisely, save time and fuel and maximize productivity, according to the manufacturer.

The 2D Smart Blade assist function, which comes standard, makes precision grading easier. The HD100 also can be ordered Trimble-ready from the factory. This optional 3D machine guidance and 3D machine control system activates automatic blade movements based on GPS coordinates.

Options Add Versatility

An LGP (low ground pressure) option is available when ordering the dozer with a wider 10 ft. 7 in. blade vs. the standard 8 ft. 11 in. blade, along with track shoes that are 4 in. wider than the standard shoes. Other available options include a parallel ripper or towing draw bar.

Other key specifications include maximum travel speed of 5.6 mph, seven track rollers, shoe width of 1 ft. 8 in., ground contact pressure of 5.6 psi (38.6 kPa) with a standard blade. Ground pressure is 4.2 psi (29.0 kPa) with the optional LGP package.

Siren Sensing Allows Emergency Vehicles to Clear Bridge

BRIDGE from page 1

“This is the McKees Rocks Bridge, so if you’re familiar with the area, it’s a very heavily used bridge,” Zang said. “We have it restricted down to one lane in each direction, which has caused a lot of challenges at each end of the bridge, especially the northern side of the bridge with Route 65.”

He added that in this heavily-used intersection, one of the turning lanes had to be eliminated, so this created some issues.

“There’s also an emergency services company that basically is headquartered right beside of the bridge and uses the bridge very heavily,” Zang said. “So, when we first went into construction, they were highly concerned with the traffic cues and backups, and what we ended up doing was using a pre-emptive traffic signal technology out on the project that senses sirens and gives them a green light to allow them to clear the bridge. It’s worked out really, really well. It’s also a high crash area. It’s a long bridge, it’s narrow with the two lanes, people speed and initially we had a lot of accidents on the bridge. It seems to have calmed down.”

He reported that another challenge involves winter services.

“Our plow trucks have 12-foot-wide plows on them; the lanes are 11-foot-wide, so that’s problematic,” Zang said. “So, we had to work around that and use specialty equipment in the winter to clear the bridge of snow.”

He also noted the unique aspects of the structure, which extends for 1.1 mi.

The $40.8 million McKees Rocks Bridge Preservation project is fully funded by the state.
The project involves more than 220,000 lbs. of structural steel repairs and approximately 5,000 cu. yds. of concrete poured with approximately 7,000 cu. yds. demoed.

Work to Preserve ‘One-of-a-Kind’ Bridge

A project to preserve a Pittsburgh, Pa., bridge will be complete by next summer, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

BRIDGE from page 76

“It’s one of kind,” he said. “There’s no other bridge like the McKees Rocks Bridge. It was built in 1930. There are unique details of how things are put together and how things are supported, which kind of led us to add the work. We ended up deciding to replace all the barrier in the bridge, which was not in the original design, because the sidewalk is what we were replacing. The sidewalk is supported by the barrier, so we wanted to make sure we had solid foundation for the sidewalk support, so we ended up deciding to replace the barrier.”

He explained that another phase of the project when funding becomes available will involve painting the bridge deck.

Zang said that some of the spans on the bridge are what is called a through truss. There are some suspended spans, deck arches and open spans.

“Another challenge is that it goes over ALCOSAN,” he said. “It’s the biggest wastewater treatment plant in

Allegheny County. It treats Allegheny County, city of Pittsburgh and several of the spans of the bridge actually go over that plant, which is a very active plant. They’re also going through major projects to expand their service, so it’s a very congested, heavily used area.”

Subcontractors include Amari Painting for painting of the sidewalk support steel and pedestrian railings along the sidewalks; Rae-Lyn for all temporary signs along the project; Bronder Technical Services for electrical/signals; Strongstown’s B&K for temp concrete barrier; Williams & Willman for line painting/pavement markings; and Eurovia (Northeast Paving) for the paving tie-ins on each end of the project (at the SR 65 and SR 51 intersections).

There are approximately 45-60 workers in total from the prime contractor and its subcontractors daily.

The project involves more than 220,000 lbs. of structural steel repairs and approximately 5,000 cu. yds. of concrete poured with approximately 7,000 cu. yds. demoed. CEG

USDOT Unveils National V2X Deployment Strategy

roadside infrastructure. It’s being compared with vintage technology still appreciated by truckers around the world.

In August, the DOT unveiled its National V2X Deployment Plan, which the agency said sets the launch vision, goals and milestones for the next 12 years.

“Excitement is building around V2X,” said Egan Smith, managing director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) joint program office.

“As deployments become more widespread, we are going to see the safety benefits multiply,” he told DOT’s Public Highways magazine.

With the launch, DOT is calling on public agencies and private-sector stakeholders to take action on 12 specific interoperable deployments, all by 2036.

“Interoperability is the key,” Govind Vadakpat, the ITS JPO program manager of smart infrastructure told Public Highways. “Vehicles, devices and infrastructure all must … communicate … seamlessly across jurisdictional boundaries for V2X to reach its full potential.”

The FHWA has stepped up to advance interoperability. The agency is providing technical assistance and resources to V2X deployers, for one thing. It’s also working to resolve regulatory uncertainty, establishing a V2X peer group and identifying proven V2X applications.

Finally, FHWA is investing in research, development and deployment of V2X technology, according to the article.

More than 800 comments prove stakeholders support the draft deployment plan, many enthusiastic about its key features.

Singing Praises of Connectivity

Citizens Band radio technology, first popular in the 1950s, continues to be a vital communication tool in the trucking and heavy transport sector.

It is an early example of “a ubiquitous communication system that was, and is, used both by citizens at home and … in any type of vehicle or boat,” said hackaday.com. “For truckers in particular it provides a means to obtain constant updates on road conditions [and for] truck-to-truck communications should the need arise.”

Car drivers, who connect and inform via smartphone technology, still want access to a communication network for crucial information, said hackaday. Cruise control and collision avoidance systems (CAS) monitor activity around the vehicle as well as potential traffic rule violations.

“The number and types of CAS and other forms of advanced driver-assistance systems [ADAS] in modern cars keep increasing,” said the publication.

Everything “from LIDAR and cameras to radar systems” prevent collisions, keep the car in the current lane and detect braking cars ahead. These systems also integrate data obtained via a data link on upcoming traffic lights and other notable features long before they become visible.

“It raises the question of whether … V2X … would do more than standardize and expand upon much of the technology that is already out and about on the roads today,” said hackaday.com.

Titled Saving Lives with Connectivity, the deployment plan will guide DOT’s V2X implantation and the agency’s goal of zero highway fatalities. The plan was released in draft form about a year ago, detailing the technology that

New Tech Enables Safer, More Secure Transportation

would enable vehicles and wireless devices to communicate.

“These technologies can enable a more safe, secure and efficient transportation system while maintaining privacy and consumer protection,” said DOT.

The agency also said that the technologies will contribute to the Safe System Approach adopted by the USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy. The Safe System Approach is a comprehensive plan launched in January 2022 to address the crisis of roadway deaths.

The national plan “has the power to save lives and transform the way we travel,” said Pete Buttigieg, secretary of transportation. “The department recognizes the potential safety benefits of V2X, and this plan will move us closer to nationwide adoption of this technology.”

Robert C. Hampshire, principal deputy assistant for research, said the plan was drafted in collaboration with pubic and private partnerships.

“The plan will accelerate investment, research and deployment in V2X ‘market certainty,’” he said.

And, Shailen Bhatt, FHWA administrator, said the plan provides a framework for the acceleration of V2X deployment. Along with the deployment, FHWA announced nearly $60 million in grants to three entities to promote deployment.

million for largescale deployment of V2X technologies. Arizona’s plan is to connect 750 physical and virtual roadside units to an estimated 400 vehicle onboard units targeting transit, emergency and freight fleets via emergency vehicle preemption, vulnerable road user (VRU) detection, transit signal priority and freight signal priority applications.

Those applications will be in Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale

transponders, saying it would give vehicles “awareness of where other traffic is hanging out.”

The V2X technology also would include communication regarding infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P) and vehicle-to-network (V2N).

The goal is to advance V2X communication, ensuring connected technologies communicate securely without interference across a variety of devices and platforms.

The launch represents a “significant milestone,” said Laura Chace, Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS) president and CEO.

“USDOT’s enthusiastic support for V2X adoption provides clear guidance to stakeholders for continued V2X development, investment and deployment.”

Grants Spur Deployment Models

In June, DOT awarded $60 million in grants in Arizona, Texas and Utah to advance connected and interoperable vehicle technologies. The awards are intended to serve as national models to accelerate and spur new deployments of V2X technologies.

Connected vehicle technology like V2X “has potential to make roads safer and save lives,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in announcing the awards. “The grants we’re announcing today are helping accelerate the development and adoption of potentially life-saving V2X technology nationwide.”

“The funding … will help accelerate the technology so that we can deploy it on a national scale,” said Bhatt.

That in turn means the agency can “provide new tools to reduce deaths on our nation’s roads and highways,” he added.

In Arizona, the Maricopa County DOT will receive $19.6

and unincorporated Maricopa County, as well as along ADOT’s U.S. 60.

Texas A&M Transportation Institute will receive $19.2 million to deploy in Houston, College Station and corridors connecting the two cities.

The project serves to enhance safety, efficiency and overall mobility for VRU at signalized intersections and trafficnavigating emergency responders It also serves transit operators seeking efficient routes, workers operating within construction zones and everyday motorists.

The Utah DOT will receive $20 million toward deployment sites in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Each state represents a broad variety of population densities, demographics, jurisdictions, topography and transportation facilities.

All of Utah, I-80 through Wyoming, and major portions of Colorado including Denver, I-70 to the Utah border, and I25 through Colorado are included.

The applications focus on safety, mobility and environment and support the ability to demonstrate measurable impact. They address critical needs including connected intersection, weather impact, curve speed warning, traveler information, VRU and other safety technologies.

How Smart Will Technology Be?

Wireless communication would transmit road and traffic conditions more directly and independent from signs near or on the road, reported hackaday.com.

The publication likened the technology to airplane

“Is this the future of road traffic?” asked the article. “The DOT seems to think that its deployment will be a good thing” — except for tricky regulations.

“V2X has been stuck in regulatory hurdles,” noted the publication. “This may now change, with the DOT releasing a roadmap for its deployment.”

As ITS explains, V2X-enabled cars also would be able to communicate with V2X-enabled bicyclists and pedestrians with V2X-enabled devices on themselves or a bike.

“This would then communicate with the vehicle’s ADAS, ideally preventing collisions between the vehicle and these much squishier traffic participants,” said hackaday. “These personal V2X devices could be integrated into smartphones at some point, for example.”

ITS’ deployment plan envisions V2X-enabled cars with 5.9 GHzenabled radios communicating with roadside units (RSU). An exchange of relevant information would build upon the knowledge gained so far from cellular-V2X (C-V2X) trials, according to hackaday.

“The RSU would be placed at intersections, where it could eliminate many crashes.”

This while also providing the driver with information on when a traffic light will turn green and prevent the running of red lights. While it sounds wonderful on paper, said hackaday, there’s the chance that spoofed V2X messages will affect traffic or cause casualties it seeks to avoid.

The ITS cybersecurity research program wants trusted communications between vehicles, infrastructure and other parties in a V2X-enabled system.

“This would seem to involve some secure way to signing messages while guaranteeing some level of anonymity,” noted hackaday.

To avoid collision, “you only need to know where the vehicle, bike or pedestrian in question is roughly located before any onboard sensors can detect it.”

“If V2X wants to succeed, it should be implemented and handled in a way that works with … biases, rather than against them,” said the article. “If lives are saved due to V2X-enabled cars …then those are convincing arguments.”

The publication maintains that implementing V2X might be easier than self-driving cars. That’s because it doesn’t change or replace anything more than do ADAS features in today’s cars.

“It might even be quite realistic to retrofit V2X into existing vehicles, significantly promoting kinetic hesitancy in close traffic situations,” said hackaday.com

But the publication takes a cautious approach to the concept of V2X standardization: “We will have to wait and see what happens.”  CEG

Third Phase of Queens Sewer Project to Start in Mid-2026

many pedestrian and traffic disruptions to relocate underground utilities that are already in the street and then install the new sewer. Instead, micro-tunneling reduced construction time at the Queens Boulevard location from several months to roughly one week.

Local catch basins and fire hydrants were upgraded and nearly 1.5 mi. of local curbs were replaced along with sidewalks in many areas. The project also upgraded 47 pedestrian ramps to be ADAcompliant, and added 18 trees and a bike lane in the area.

“The need to upgrade our sewer infrastructure is more pressing than ever,” said Councilmember Robert F. Holden. “Thanks to the city for completing the second phase of this massive sewer project, and I look forward to the third and final phase being completed in the coming years to finally give residents some relief.”

“The families of Maspeth deserve to live free from flooding every time it rains, and this critical project will go a long way toward protecting homes and businesses across this community,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr.

“Thank you to our partners at DDC for getting this work done in a way that was as least disruptive to area residents as possible, and I look forward to completing the third and final phase of this project in the years to come.”

“I am happy to see the completion of this infrastructure project here in Maspeth,” said Assemblymember Steven Raga. “It is incredibly important that our city’s design meets the needs of residents, and this new drainage system and additional upgrades will better serve Queens residents. I appreciate DDC responsiveness to community concerns throughout the installation of this new system and look forward to the completion the third and final project in near future.” 

Caterpillar, IMA Engineering Forge Innovative Collaboration

Caterpillar Inc. announced a new alliance with IMA Engineering to enhance Caterpillar’s Cat Precision Mining initiative.

This collaboration aims to use cuttingedge technology to provide real-time, detailed information about ore, the raw material extracted in mining, enabling sites to improve the efficiency and accuracy of mining operations.

Cat Precision Mining is Caterpillar’s advanced vision to improve every step of the mining process, from extraction to processing. By incorporating real-time data and the latest technologies, this initiative aims to ensure that mining operations can adjust more quickly and precisely to the natural variations in ore.

“Our goal with Cat Precision Mining is to give our customers the tools they need to make quick and accurate decisions, leading to better handling and processing of materials,” said Marc Cameron, senior vice president Caterpillar Resource industries Sales, Services and Technology. “We believe the collaboration will ultimately elevate the industry’s standards in mining productivity and efficiency.”

The joint effort will focus on using IMA Engineering’s ore sensing technologies in different stages of mining and integrating them into the Caterpillar ecosystem. These technologies are crucial for accurately identifying and analyzing the material properties of ore as it is mined and processed so lowquality material is classified as waste and not processed, the company said.

Jukka Raatikainen, CEO of IMA Engineering, highlighted the importance of teamwork in advancing the mining industry.

“Mining is going through a transformative shift to digitalized, autonomous operations. Disruptive solutions are required to reach the ambitious levels set by the industry for safe, efficient and sustainable mining. Our collaboration with Caterpillar is enabling that change,” said Raatikainen.

This alliance not only underscores Caterpillar’s commitment to leading through innovation but also strengthens its role in transforming the mining industry by improving decision-making and enhancing overall operational efficiency. 

NAWIC, Dept. of Labor, Community Leaders Join for Roundtable

NAWIC photo

The collaborative roundtable and signing event fosters workplace stability, inclusion and support for Lansing, Mich., workforce and the nation.

The National Association of Women in Constructions (NAWIC) President-elect Rita Brown joined leading innovators in Michigan’s workforce on Sept. 5 at the U.S. Department of Labor’s Lansing, Mich.-area Good Jobs Principles Roundtable, and signed a national initiative designed to support the creation of quality jobs that enhance stability, promote inclusivity and empower workers across the construction sector and beyond.

This initiative is led by U.S. Department of Labor Acting Secretary of Labor Julie A. Su and locally by Andy Schor, mayor of Lansing.

The Good Jobs principles were created to enhance communities and business competitiveness on a global scale with a framework of principles for workers, businesses, labor unions and governments to create a shared vision of job quality. Cities across the country are adopting these principles.

Brown’s insight on the construction industry as CEO of Brown Construction Collective Plus (BCC+), brings a nationwide perspective, based on her significant volunteer and corporate work in advocating and advancing women and underrepresented populations.

“The Good Jobs Initiative is important and tangible for our members [NAWIC’s] and for the growth and stability of the construction industry. The reinforcing principles of the Initiative speak directly to our NAWIC mission and vision. Connecting resources between employers, employees, unions, government and industry is intentional and resourceful. There isn’t a downside,” Brown said.

NAWIC was invited to participate in this significant initiative, marking a historic moment for this nationwide organization. Being part of this event spotlights NAWIC’s presence nationally and demonstrates the organization’s commitment to advocating for job quality, advancement, inclusivity; benefiting the industry and NAWIC members. NAWIC currently has 120 state-based chapters in eight regions, representing women working in all aspects of the construction industry.

The National Association of Women in Construction is dedicated to advocating for recognition of the value and impact women bring to these industry jobs and amplifying their relevance in all aspects of the construction industry.

Superior Construction Wins ARTBA Glass Hammer Award

Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, is a 2024 winner of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Glass Hammer Award.

The association gives the annual award to companies in the transportation construction industry that use innovative programs and activities to promote women leaders within their businesses.

In 2022, at the request of Chief Executive Officer Nick Largura, Superior Construction launched the Superior Women in Construction (SWiC) initiative. The internal talent development program empowers women and drives innovation. It was designed in collaboration with a certified executive and team coach to promote a diverse leadership pipeline and access a broader range of talent aligning with Superior’s mission and vision.

In the inaugural year, company executives selected 11 rising women leaders to take part in the pilot program. The women had access to monthly group coaching on leadership topics, individual career coaching sessions, a mentor program and opportunities to learn about various parts of the construction industry. They also completed team projects centered around creating value for Superior Construction.

“The mentorship was especially helpful because it gave me greater access to various aspects of our company and business opera-

tions,” said SWiC member Amy Henningfield, who has been with Superior since 2011.

As part of the program, SWiC members were encouraged to volunteer with organizations working to advance and empower women in construction, including industryrelated associations and local community groups. Among other activities, SWiC members attended numerous high school and university career fairs to increase awareness about roles for women in the construction industry. They took part in a non-traditional employment workshop to introduce construction career possibilities to eighth-grade girls. In addition, members spoke at an American Heart Association Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) event.

The inaugural SWiC program members graduated in fall 2023. Many of them are now on the SWiC steering committee. Members of the second SWiC class are currently completing their yearlong program. In launching SWiC, Superior Construction has created a program it hopes will become an industry standard and generate more advocates for women in construction.

Members of the SWiC steering committee accepted the Glass Hammer Award at ARTBA’s national convention conference in Amelia Island, Fla. For more information, visit superiorconstruction.com. 

Business News... Komatsu Plans to Acquire Mining Software Developer

To expand its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and help customers optimize their mining operations, Komatsu announced its intent to acquire Octodots Analytics, a Chile-based digital solutions provider.

The announcement comes as the company debuts its new Modular ecosystem, a bold vision for the future of mine site optimization and data sharing, at MINExpo 2024 in Las Vegas.

Building upon Komatsu’s DISPATCH fleet management system, the Modular ecosystem is a set of interconnected platforms and products designed to simplify existing workflows.

“Our ecosystem is designed to empower customers to optimize decision making at the machine, mine site and enterprise levels,” said Jason Fletcher, SVP Mining Technology Solutions, Komatsu.

“Octodots’ expertise and solutions map perfectly to what we’ve created and we are excited about the opportunities to incorporate their products and capabilities into our offering.”

Since 2017, Octodots Analytics has been developing and commercializing advanced digital solutions for industries including mining, construction, forestry, transportation and more. Kohler Energy Rebrands as Rehlko

Kohler Energy officially rebranded under its new corporate name Rehlko (pronounced REL-co), marking a major milestone in the company’s 100plus-year history delivering energy solutions that provide independence, agility and security to mission-critical infrastructure, facilities and residences.

Rehlko will continue operating as an independent enterprise. The company became a stand-alone entity in May 2024 when Platinum Equity completed a transaction with Kohler Company to establish then-Kohler Energy as a stand-alone business. Platinum Equity is the majority owner of Rehlko with Kohler Company remaining an investment partner.

“We are embracing our future as an independent company with the new Rehlko brand and celebrating our legacy and our commitment for tackling the most complex energy challenges, and the values that guide everything we do and stand for,” said Brian Melka, Rehlko chief executive officer.

“Our company’s new name is derived from the six letters of Kohler and reflects the reliability, resolve,

reinvention and resilience that have been the hallmarks of this organization in addressing the ever-evolving distributed energy needs of the marketplace.”

Rehlko will continue to provide control, resilience and innovation through a comprehensive range of energy solutions, including power generation, energy storage, and renewable energy technologies among others.

Rehlko operates a broad portfolio of leading businesses including Power Systems, Engines, Uninterruptible Power, Home Energy, Clarke Energy, Curtis Instruments and Heila Technologies. Kohler Power Systems and Kohler Engines will lead the enterprise portfolio brand transition by officially becoming Rehlko branded by the end of 2024.

“This rebranding is more than just a clever name change. The letters that comprise the name Rehlko reflect our 100-plus years of rich heritage under the Kohler brand and represent a bold step forward in our journey to continue building and powering a sustainable energy future,” said Francis Perrin, chief brand and sustainability officer at Rehlko.

Melka officially unveiled the Rehlko brand at the Fast Company Innovation Festival on Sept. 17 and will launch its new corporate website — Rehlko.com.

The company will support its new enterprise rebranding through a multifaceted marketing effort including a targeted advertising campaign to introduce Rehlko across top- tier business and trade industry media publications, with the theme “Resilience is Reinvention.”

The company also is continuing its partnership with two of the Interpublic Group’s (“IPG”) global communications and branding agencies, The Weber Shandwick Collective and FutureBrand, who have been supporting brand launch and brand design efforts, respectively.

Headquartered in Wisconsin, Rehlko will maintain operations in more than 100 locations across the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
