NYC Completes $139M Infrastructure Job in College Point
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) joined local elected officials to celebrate the completion of a $139 million project in College Point, Queens, that covered over 100 individual blocks, upgrading over 6 mi. of water mains and over 8 mi. of sewers to improve stormwater drainage and water service.
The project, which was managed by DDC for DEP and DOT, also upgraded streets with more than 24 acres of asphalt and other major improvements.
“This major infrastructure brings critical investments to College Point, with upgraded roads and sidewalks that improve accessibility and enhance safety for all,” said NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “We thank the DOT, DEP and DDC teams for their unwavering commitment to get the job done, as well as Councilmember Paladino and Queens Borough President Richards for their staunch support in bringing this project to fruition.”

Richards for supporting us through this extensive project.”
“This major infrastructure investment will bring peace of mind to College Point residents who for years have dealt with poor street conditions and flooding after rainstorms,” said NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Thomas Foley. “These upgrades will help with stormwater management in the area and mitigate the effects of climate change for local residents. I thank the DDC team, DEP and DOT teams for their hard work, and Councilmember Paladino and Queens Borough President
These infrastructure upgrades were made to enhance quality of life for residents in the College Point area, addressing the longstanding issue of basement flooding caused by a combined sewer system. The project replaced parts of the outdated combined sewer system with nearly 8.5 mi. of new sewers — more than 21,000 ft. of storm sewers and over 22,000 ft. of sanitary sewers.
The construction of storm sewers included the installation of seven large storm sewer chambers and a tide gate designed as a barrier to prevent tidal waters from infiltrating the storm sewer system during high tide.
Micro tunneling was used in this project to dig in two locations, eliminating the need for 30-ft.-deep excavations that would have caused noise and other disruptions to the neighborhood.
Seven miles of water mains that were more than 50 years old were upgraded to new 8 to 20-in.-wide ductile iron pipes. The project installed 249 new catch basins and upgraded 51 old catch basins. Additionally, 92 fire hydrants were installed, 30 trees were added and more than 8,000 sq. ft. of wetlands were restored.

Eagle Power announced the acquisition of Mid-State Equipment Co. Inc., located in Pennington, N.J.
The purchase, finalized in midOctober, marks an important step in Eagle Power’s expansion into the New Jersey market.
As part of this growth, Eagle Power Turf & Tractor will undergo a rebranding, now operating under the name Eagle Power Kubota. While the name is changing, the company’s commitment to providing the same high-quality sales and service remains steadfast.
Mid-State founder Wayne Tuck will retire after more than 30 years of distinguished service, leaving behind a legacy that Eagle Power is proud to continue, the company said.
“The dedication to customer service and deep-rooted community relationships established by Mid-State will serve as the foundation for Eagle Power Kubota’s future
growth. To ensure a smooth transition, many familiar faces from Mid-State’s sales, service and parts teams will remain with the organization. support built by Mid-State. Our aim is to be more than just a Kubota dealership; we want to be a trusted partner in your endeavors.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Tuck said, “For the past 34 years, our goal has been to continually enhance the services we provide to our valued customers. As I move on to the next chapter of my life, I am grateful to have had the best team of dedicated employees and loyal customers, who have exceeded all expectations.

Paterson Officials OK Funding to Replace Iconic Footbridge
More than three years after the iconic footbridge at Paterson, N.J.’s Great Falls was closed for safety reasons, city officials on Oct. 21 approved a $1.14 million contract to replace the structure.
The installation of the new span should be completed within one year, according to the resolution approving the contract.
Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park enthusiasts have eagerly awaited the reopening of the bridge — which provides dramatic views of the 77-ft.-high waterfall. The work was delayed for more than a year amid a dispute over the structure’s ownership, the Paterson Press reported Oct. 23.
The bridge also will provide a shortcut for visitors seeking to walk from the national park’s Overlook Park section on the south side of the Passaic River to the north bank’s Mary Ellen Kramer Park area, which is closest to the waterfall.
The U.S. House of Representatives plans to name the new footbridge after late New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr., a Paterson native and former mayor, who died on Aug. 21 at the age of 87.
Pascrell served 27 years in the House and was one of the leaders in the effort to convince the federal government to designate the Great Falls area as a national park in 2009.
An earlier bill that would name the park’s overlook area — directly across the Passaic River from the waterfall — after Pascrell had been introduced in September by Rep. Frank Pallone, D-Middlesex.
“Without Bill’s leadership, this beautiful park — an emblem of Paterson’s role in America’s industrial rise — might not exist,” Pallone said in his press release. “His tireless work to protect and promote the Great Falls ensures that future generations will understand its significance.”
Pallone also issued a statement in September saying that he would seek to rename the park itself after Pascrell, but federal officials said there is no precedent for naming an entire national park after a member of Congress.
The section of the Great Falls park nearest the waterfall is named after Mary Ellen Kramer, who decades ago fought to preserve the area and prevent development there. She was the wife of the late Paterson Mayor Lawrence “Pat” Kramer.
New Bridge One of Various Upgrades Around Park
The footbridge’s construction is going to end up costing significantly more than officials initially expected, the Paterson news source noted. Two years ago, preliminary
estimates put the price at $300,000. Officials could not be reached by Paterson Press for comment regarding why the cost was higher.
The city already spent $172,000 on an engineering contract to design the replacement bridge.
Funding for the work comes from a variety of sources, including the National Park Service (NPS), the Passaic County Open Space Acquisition Grant Program and Paterson’s allocation of American Rescue Fund COVID-relief money.
The Paterson City Council voted to award the bridge contract to Colonnelli Brothers Inc. in nearby Hackensack, N.J., which was the low bidder for the project.
However, the council balked at approving a $2.95 million contract for the construction of the new Vista park, which would be located along a cliff overlooking the river.
Twice, separate developers aborted plans to build housing on the Vista property, which sits next to the senior citizen housing at the newly-preserved and historic Hinchliffe Stadium. The state Green Acres program eventually bought the land for $5.7 million so it could be preserved as a park.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh’s administration plans to put a small amphitheater, a playground, restrooms and a grilling and picnic area in the Vista park. Council members on Oct. 21 said they want a detailed presentation on those plans before they approve the funding.

Taylor Excavation Expands Services With Mecalac Iron
Taylor Excavation, a general construction company located in Trout Run, Pa., and owned by Terry Taylor, recently purchased a Mecalac model 6MCR from Woods CRW Corp’s Carlisle, Pa., facility.
The Mecalac 6MCR is a compact machine that combines the best of a mini-excavator and a skid steer in one machine using its uniquely engineered articulating boom.
After a three-month rental of the machine, Taylor was so impressed he made the decision to purchase it.
During the course of the rental, Taylor discovered that with the Mecalac’s powerful hydraulic system he could put any skid steer attachment on the machine, many of which would require a 24gal. per minute flow, and it was easily handled by the Mecalac.
“Once I experienced that, the decision to purchase was easy,” he said. “The Mecalac is truly two machines in one. I can do anything with it that any excavator or skid steer can do, and I only have to bring one machine to the job site and work on a small but complex project with one machine and one operator.
“With one machine I can put in footers; scoop up spoils; load, scoop and spread stone; or reach over a block wall,” he added. “I really can’t think of anything that a skid steer or an excavator can do that I can’t do with this machine. There are things that I can do with this machine that I would never be able to do with just a skid steer. A skid steer has a hard time reaching high enough to load a tri-axle dump. With the unique articulated boom of the Mecalac, I can load a tri-axle or go even higher, if needed.
been named the distributor for my area.”
“When I saw the Mecalac machine, I knew right away that it would make a great addition to my equipment fleet if it truly operated as described. The machine is manufactured in France, and I knew that no one else was making a machine like it that was available in the United States. I did some research and found out that Woods CRW in Carlisle, Pa., had
According to Taylor, after initially investing in the machine, it took him a little bit of time to get comfortable with the controls, but it was a short learning curve and he soon found the Mecalac to be a unique and highly productive machine for the types of work that he is involved in.

Highway Equipment & Supply Co. Hosts Customer Event
On Oct. 10, 2024, Highway Equipment & Supply Co. hosted its annual Customer Appreciation Day at Whitetail Preserve in Bloomsburg, Pa.
This event gives customers the opportunity to explore a wide range of equipment, enjoy a delicious lunch, test their skills in trap and skeet shooting, and participate in various giveaways. Equipment on display included top brands such as Volvo, Takeuchi, Morbark, Rayco, Avant, Kage and more.
Each attendee received a Highway Equipment & Supply Co. (HESCO) swag bag and had the chance to win raffle prizes including t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, watches, mugs and more. This event also provided customers with the unique opportunity to get an up-close look at new equipment and engage with experts from Volvo and Takeuchi, gaining valuable insights and asking questions about the machines.
This year’s event had even greater significance. Throughout the month of October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, HESCO made a donation to Geisinger Medical Center for each new machine sold. To further show its support, each machine sold during this time featured a special machine sticker symbolizing the company’s dedication to breast cancer research and awareness, reminding buyers of this important cause beyond the sale.
Each machine on-site at the event displayed the sticker, and signage was prominently placed to raise awareness of this campaign.
Jamie, territory sales manager of Bobcat at the Drums location, has personally witnessed the impact of breast cancer as he supported his wife through her diagnosis.
“Each of us, in one way or another, is touched by the fight against breast cancer — whether it’s through our own experiences or
those of someone we care about. Together, our collective strength and support can make a world of difference. Breast cancer awareness is not just about wearing pink; it’s about empowering ourselves with knowledge, supporting those affected, and advocating for a future where every diagnosis leads to a cure.”
“This annual event is a testament to Highway Equipment & Supply Co.’s commitment to building lasting relationships with our customers while providing highquality equipment and service. Over the past 70 years, we’ve cultivated a community of loyal customers whose support and feedback drive our success. We take pride in both the products we offer and the connections we’ve built, and we look forward to serving our customers for many more years to come,” the company said.

H.A. DeHart & Son Celebrates 140 Years in Business
Representing the Stellar Industries exhibit are Kevin Ellis, regional sales manager, and Chris Rycroft, director of sales, mechanics bodies and cranes, both of Stellar.
H.A DeHart & Son held an open house Oct. 17, 2024, to celebrate a remarkable milestone — 140 years in business.
The event, held at the company’s facility in Thorofare, N.J., where it has been for all its 140 years in business, drew well more than 300 contractors, municipalities and friends.
Joe Tompkins, who started with H.A. DeHart & Son as a sales representative in 1993 and became the company’s president in 2016, talked about the company’s long illustrious history during the event.
“We have developed from selling wagons back in the 1800s,” he said. “Then, we made truck-mounted bodies in the early days, the late 1800s and early 1900s for wooden bodies, wooden platforms and dump bodies. And then as things developed, we started working with some of the national manufacturers selling school buses, Great Dane trailers and truck equipment.”
According to Tompkins, H.A. DeHart has been a Great Dane trailer dealer since 1952, making it the longest-tenured Great Dane dealer in the United States.
“And we have been selling school buses since the 1940s,” Tompkins said. “For the past 25 years, we have been representing Thomas Built Buses, based in High Point, N.C., and they have been very good partner along with Great Dane.”
H.A. DeHart & Son was founded in 1884 with its primary business being blacksmithing. This business included the repair of wagons, which from all accounts, led the company into manufacturing new wagons. The first wagon produced then led the company into manufacturing ice units and furniture vans. With the advent of the automobile, the company altered their product line by selling truck chassis and building a truck body to fit.
Today, the company is an Employees Stock
With Open House at Its Facility in Thorofare, N.J.
Ownership Plan (ESOP) business that has entered into more than 30 dealership agreements with manufacturers of transportation equipment, including refuse, snow removal, hydraulics, dump bodies, stake bodies, street sweepers, cranes, recycling equipment and buses. Within these product categories, the company offers an array of product options and custom features. H.A. DeHart & Son also has a full line of parts, service and repair facilities to handle all facets of the transportation market.
During the event, many of these manufacturers set up exhibitor booths to showcase their lines, including Great Dane, Schwarz Industries street sweepers, GalionGodwin Truck Body, ARM Truck Corp., Stellar Industries, Towmaster trailers, Knapheide Manufacturing, New Way Refuse Equipment, Tommy Gate, Spaulding Mfg., Brush Hawg, Super Products “Camel Max” Jet/Vac, Swaploader hook lifts, Air-Flo, and many, many more.
“We have a diverse range of products, and we have a diverse customer base here,” said Tompkins. “We have municipalities from a 120-mile radius of South Jersey here to attend our open house, and we also have construction contractors here. So, diversification has helped us over the years. If one segment of contractor business is down, there’s always trash on the streets, which need to be picked up, the streets still need sweeping and the sewers and basins still need to be vacuumed and cleaned.”
In addition to exhibitors keeping guests busy, a country music duo, Bar None Band, kept everybody entertained with live music and H.A. DeHart & Son kept all well fed with a free lunch.
“It’s been a good run for us at H.A. DeHart and the fact that we are employee-owned, and employ over 75 employees, everybody takes pride in their ownership,” Tompkins said. “We all try to do a good job.” CEG

Jobs Rise, But Finding Qualified Workers Remains Tough
from page 1
Builders (NAHB). That’s 5 percent more than the previous peak in 2006, according to Anat Nusinovich, economist of the National Association of REALTORS (NAR)
She said nationally the average growth rate of construction jobs from 2007 to 2023 was 0.4 percent.
Though the housing sector is one part of the construction market, it does serve as an indicator of just how construction jobs affect the economy.
Numbers Speak Volumes
Between 2007 and 2011, the construction jobs growth rate was negative, reaching a low of -16 percent in 2009 during the Great Recession.
“The rate saw another significant decline during the pandemic, dropping from 2.8 percent in 2019 to -3.2 percent in 2020,” said Nusinovich. “However, the construction industry has since rebounded, reaching a growth rate of 3.3 percent in 2023,” — 0.5 points higher than pre-pandemic.”
The economist noted that this year, the local average growth rate for construction jobs is 2.9 percent, matching pre-pandemic numbers from 2019.
According to the NAR report, approximately 70 percent of analyzed areas outperformed this rate over the past year.
Notably, between 2019 and 2024, Cleveland, Tenn., registered the highest growth rate at 60.0 percent.
Elizabethtown, Ky., and Fayetteville, Ark., came in at 57.1 percent and 42.9 percent, respectively.
Further, two areas in Idaho — Idaho Falls with 37.5 percent and Boise City with 37.2 percent — came in the fifth and sixth places.
Punta and Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla., also showed “significant” growth, ranking fourth at 39.5 percent and tenth at 35.4 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, and ChicagoNaperville-Elgin, Ill.-Ind., experienced the lowest growth rates at 0.5 percent.
These two cities were followed by Midland, Texas, with 0.7 percent, “despite having the highest share of construction jobs in 2024,” said the NAR.
“Between July 2019 and July 2024, only 7.3 percent of the areas recorded no growth in construction jobs, with a growth rate of zero.”
However, NAR’s Nusinovich said, from before the pandemic until this summer, 17.3 percent of the observed areas experienced negative growth rates. That indicates a a loss of construction workers, she said, noting that the biggest losses were in Lake Charles, La., whose rate was -52.2 percent.
Next in line was Johnstown, Pa., with -37.9 percent, and Augusta-Richmond County, Ga.-S.C., at -29.9 percent.
“Ithaca, New York, which also had the lowest concentration of construction jobs, saw a decline of 21.4 percent in its construction workforce since 2019.”
The AGC also tracks construction employment trends and found that 80 percent of U.S. states saw jobs increases in September. In all, 24 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between August and September of this year, according to the association.
More states would have added workers year-over-year if
contractors could find enough qualified applicants, said AGC.
“It is great that four out of five states have added construction jobs over the past year,” Ken Simonson, chief economist, said in a statement.
“Even more states would be seeing gains if there were enough qualified workers available to fill job openings,” the association told ConstructConnect.
In its BLS analysis, AGC found construction jobs rose from September to September in 40 states and declined in 10 states and the District of Columbia.
Texas added the most construction jobs, at 42,300, followed by Florida, with 37,100; Ohio, 16,400; Michigan, 12,600; and Indiana, 12,500.
The largest percentage increases were in Alaska, with 3,700 jobs and Hawaii, with 4,500. Oklahoma, at 7,800, and Nevada, at 10,000, followed.
New York State saw the largest loss, at, -6,900 or -1.8 percent, followed by Oregon, -4,800 or -4.1 percent and Maryland, -4,600 or -2.9 percent.
AGC reported Oregon had the largest percentage loss, followed by Maryland and Maine.
“For the month, construction employment … was unchanged in Minnesota, Rhode Island and Vermont,” said the association. “Texas added the most jobs, followed by Ohio, Florida, South Carolina and Colorado.”
Ohio had the largest percentage gain, followed by South Carolina, Alaska and Nebraska.
Tennessee lost the most construction jobs in the month. Oregon and Louisiana followed.
North Dakota lost the highest percentage of jobs. Oregon and West Virginia were next. see JOBS page 88
The construction industry has rebounded from a period of negative job growth between 2007 and 2011 to a record 3.3 percent

KEMROC Expands; Plans to Increase Nationwide Presence
By Katherine Petrik CEG EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
Klaus Ertmer, founder of KEMROC, has been described as a visionary pioneer in the construction equipment industry. His decades of engineering expertise have led KEMROC to the forefront of specialized excavator attachments for demolition, trenching, mining, tunnelling, subsea excavation, soil mixing and recycling operations.
KEMROC Grows
In 1999, Ertmer founded his first company, and by 2000, manufactured the first transverse drum cutter in Germany. By 2010, the company had a presence in China, India, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
In 2012, a subsidiary was established in Arizona and in 2014, another subsidiary was in Brazil. In 2016, a welding parts plant was opened in Qatar, with the KEMROC brand being established in 2017.
New Products
Over the years, one strategy has remained constant: product innovation. KEMROC is continuously innovating and creating new products based on customer needs and insights.
Some of these product innovations include various rotary drum cutters, cutter wheels, rock saws, augur drives, trenchers, stump grinders, diamond saws, power tool drives, patch planers, cutting drums and more.
“KEMROC will revolutionize the construction industry replacing Hoe Rams with a more precise cut, which in turn increases production rates and makes a job site safer,” said Robert Medina, vice president of sales, KEMROC distributor Rock Hard Solutions.
Expansion
As KEMROC’s product offerings grow, so too does its need to expand its dealer network in the United States. Recently, Scott Thornberry, owner of Rock Hard Solutions, began offering the KEMROC line at his Ohio dealership.
Thornberry, also the owner of T&C Contracting, was introduced to the KEMROC EK150 chain cutter when he accidentally bumped into it at a trade show. According to his website, he was fascinated by the attachment, and used it on

a job that was supposed to take two weeks. Due to the KEMROC, the job was completed in three days, stunning Thornberry.
“My relationship with KEMROC started out as a business opportunity,” he said. “However, as I got to know the entire KEMROC team I realized that they are just as much a family as we are and strive every day to be the best solution on the market. For this reason, a business opportunity has evolved into a mission for me, a mission to help them succeed in the U.S. market.”
Jason Faust is president of Construction Machinery Company (CMC) and a friend of Thornberry. His company is the dealer of KEMROC in Indiana and Kentucky.
“CMC and KEMROC have built a strong partnership that helps us focus on finding and providing solutions for our customer’s problems rather than just selling them equipment,” said Faust.
As KEMROC expands its dealer, service, parts and support footprint in the Midwest and across the United States, the company pledges to provide dealers with the support they need.
“KEMROC is more than just a brand offering innovative solutions — it is a brand founded on unwavering trust,” said Mirna Makary, KEMROC regional marketing manager.
“We are about delivering an exceptional customer experience ensuring that our customers feel genuinely supported at every step of their journey and projects. We are proud to stand by our partners and customers, providing solutions that truly make a difference in terms of productivity and cost reduction.”
Innovation continues to fuel the company’s growth and expansion.
“At KEMROC, we have a solution for every job,” said Mina Tadros, business development director — global of KEMROC.

DuraEdge Creates Infield Soil for Phillies, Pirates, More
The clay, also known as the “Pittsburgh Red Bed Claystone,” resides in the Glenshaw formation under several layers of overburden, including sandstone, gray shale and limestone.
DuraEdge opened its doors in 1999 and began by providing sand and soil mixtures for local golf courses. Owner Grant McKnight previously worked at a construction-material company his father owned, which ignited McKnight’s interest in sands and soils.
“I’d found that I loved the science of it, so I immersed myself in studying and selling sand,” he said.
After a local, yet prominent university, Slippery Rock University, requested infield soil from DuraEdge, McKnight worked tirelessly to formulate the perfect game-day dirt that offered the moisture control and durability baseball fields demand.
It’s All in the Details
By studying the unique properties of sand and soil, McKnight sought out a particular red rock clay found in a dirt farm located in Sarver, Pa. The clay, naturally adhesive
and particularly absorbent, initially appeared too hard, leading McKnight to nearly “scrap the whole thing.” But once he took a gamble and mixed the clay with sand, however, “everything changed,” according to McKnight.
This successful find created the perfect soil and fostered a happy client — creating an entirely new niche for DuraEdge. The Slippery Rock job then helped the company secure its first “big-league” client, the Philadelphia Phillies in 2005. After that, McKnight said, “the rest is history” and its soil is now spread across baseball fields across the country.
The clay, which takes nearly two months to excavate from the ground and to process properly, contains illite and chlo-
rite, two unique minerals essential for moisture control and water absorption. The clay, initially very dense and compact, absorbs water without expanding, making it ideal for any ball field and rainy conditions.
Obtaining the clay, however, is no simple task. The clay, also known as the “Pittsburgh Red Bed Claystone,” resides in the Glenshaw formation under several layers of overburden, including sandstone, gray shale and limestone — anywhere from 10-60 ft. below the Pennsylvania mine surface. This requires a considerable amount of time and heavy iron,

Volvo to Launch Long-Range Version of FH Electric Truck
Volvo photo
Volvo’s long-range FH Electric truck will allow transport companies to operate electric trucks on interregional and long-distance routes and to drive a full working day without having to recharge, according to the manufacturer.
The electrification of heavy trucks is continuing across the world and longer distances are now becoming a possibility.
Next year Volvo will launch a new longrange version of its FH Electric that will be able to reach up to 373 miles on one charge. This will allow transport companies to operate electric trucks on interregional and longdistance routes and to drive a full working day without having to recharge. The new Volvo FH Electric will be released for sale during the second half of 2025.
“Our new electric flagship will be a great complement to our wide range of electric trucks and enable zero-exhaust emission transport also for the longer distances. It will be a great solution for transport companies with a high annual mileage on their trucks and with a strong commitment to reduce CO2,” said Roger Alm, president, Volvo Trucks.
Five Years of Electric Leadership
The enabler for the 373 mi. range is Volvo’s new driveline technology, the socalled e-axle, which creates space for significantly more battery capacity onboard. More efficient batteries, a further improved battery management system and overall efficiency of the powertrain also contribute
to the extended range, according to the manufacturer.
Volvo Trucks is a global leader in medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks with eight battery-electric models in their portfolio. The wide product range makes it possible to electrify city and regional distribution, construction, waste management and, soon, long distance transport. Volvo has so far delivered more than 3,800 electric trucks to customers in 46 countries around the world.
“The transport sector represents seven percent of global carbon emissions. Batteryelectric trucks are important tools to reduce the climate footprint. Besides the important environmental gains that electric trucks bring, they offer truck drivers a much better working environment, with much lower levels of noise and vibrations,” said Alm.
Volvo Trucks drives the transition towards fossil-free transport to reach its netzero emissions target by 2040 using a threepath technology strategy. The three-path technology approach is built on battery electric, fuel cell electric and combustion engines that run on renewable fuels like green hydrogen, biogas or HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil).

Cedarapids Announces Availability of Its New CRC1350S
Cedarapids, a division of Terex and a global leader in modular, portable and static materials processing equipment, is releasing for sale the CRC1350S portable closed-circuit cone and screen plant.
Designed for high production while maintaining portability, the CRC1350S is the largest portable closed-circuit cone and screen plant on the market today, according to the manufacturer, remaining permittable with a travel height of 14 ft.
The CRC1350S stands out for its ability to deliver high production at lower costs per ton. A key component to this success is the powerful 400 hp TC1300X Cedarapids cone crusher.
With improved kinematics and a large eccentric throw, this advanced cone crusher produces quality aggregates with
superior shape and cubicity.
Complementing the cone crusher is the 7 ft. TSV horizontal screen, which enhances production and accommodates a wider range of applications. Its high g-force oval stroke motion and variable slope operation allow it to outperform traditional horizontal screens.
Standard Features, Benefits
The CRC1350S is equipped with numerous standard features designed to enhance the customer experience and operational efficiency. These include an oversized cone feed hopper with an overflow chute, a straight-line undercrusher conveyor, a metal detector for enhanced safety, a hydraulically powered transfer chute and various axle configurations to facilitate easy plant permitting in all states.

The plant is designed for fast setup and operation, with easy-access maintenance platforms, a hydraulic folding walkway and integrated emergency stop stations to ensure operators quick return to production.
The CRC1350S plant delivers increased throughput and quality product shape.
Russ Burns, sales director, said, “Our focus with the CRC1350S was to address what customers consistently tell us they need: higher production, lower costs per ton and ease of mobility. This plant combines power, efficiency and portability to meet
those demands head-on.
Proven Performance in Field of Railroad Ballast Production
In a recent field test, the CRC1350S was utilized in a highproduction railroad ballast application. The project involved processing drilled and blasted granite material into 2 in. minus railroad ballast. Material was fed by a Cat 349 excavator into a Powerscreen 32 in. by 47 in. jaw crusher with a 5 in. closed side setting, reducing the granite to 9 in. minus.
From there, the material was conveyed to the Cedarapids CRC1350S, which was configured to produce three product variations: railroad ballast at 2 in. by 7/8 in., 3/4 in. stone and 1/2 in. minus dust. The CRC1350S produced an estimated 425 tph, split across the three products. While the plant demonstrated excellent performance, there is potential for even higher production rates with the use of a larger excavator and minor adjustments to the circuit, according to the manufacturer.
The customer expressed high satisfaction with the CRC1350S’s performance in the rail ballast configuration, highlighting the plant’s significant production capacity and ease of transport.
The Cedarapids CRC1350S closed-circuit cone and screen plant is now available to order.

Bandit Announces HM6420 Hammermill Horizontal Grinder
The Bandit team has brought the HM6420 hammermill grinder to market.
This highly productive 40 in. capacity grinder is designed and manufactured to be an alternative solution for those grinding applications that may contain contaminants. A Caterpillar C32, 1,200 hp engine provides ample torque and horsepower for optimal machine performance and productivity.
The heart of the HM6420 is a 50 in. diameter by. 66 in. wide hammermill. The heavy-duty mill features a 1.75 in. drum skin custom formed from rolled plate. The mill is supported by a 7 in. main shaft constructed of alloy steel that has been ultrasonic tested.
Each pocket within the mill is manufactured from high strength A-514 steel. These combinations create a structural sound mill for added durability and integrity. The mill is equipped with 20 carbide infused hammer inserts built to withstand the toughest material fed into the machine. Each holder is securely attached to the mill via a
quick change pocket system. Each holder recesses into the mill pocket, increasing durability.
A top plate covers the pocket and holds in place by six hex bolts. The hammer insert is attached to each holder utilizing two bolts. With this set-up, the mill hardware is easier and quicker to replace.
A heavy-duty slat-style infeed conveyor is directly driven generating more than 18,000 lbs. of pulling power. The large diameter feed wheel is also directly driven and provides an additional 17,000 lbs. of pulling power and 8,650 to 17,300 lbs. of down force when hydraulic pressure is applied. These combinations allow the HM6420 to grind massive quantities of material efficiently and effectively at one time. A proportional feed system is standard and regulates the feed
system from 82 to 132 ft. per minute. The HM6420 has one of the fastest feed rates on the market allowing it to quickly process material. The proportional feed system allows operators to adjust the feed based on material being processed ensuring maximum output and grinder efficiency, all while achieving a higher quality end-product.
Bandit photo The heart of the HM6420 is a 50-in. diameter by 66-in. wide hammermill. The mill is equipped with 20 carbide infused hammer inserts built to withstand the toughest material fed into the machine.
Three screens are located on the top side of the HM6420 mill. A variety of screen sizes are available up to 7 in. to produce various endproduct sizes. The top feed wheel moves upward, and a removable screen cradle allows for quick screen set-up changes. All work for screen changing is performed outside of the machine.
An impact detection system is standard and designed to limit damage if a contaminant is struck inside the grinding chamber. Once an impact event is detected, the grinder will idle down, open the
gate, disengage the clutch, and reverse the feed.
A 56 in. dual discharge system with a stacking height of 16 ft. 8 in. is standard. The standard wireless remote controls all grinding and tracking functions and features an LCD screen that will display engine coolant temperature, engine oil pressure, engine load percentage, engine RPM, and battery voltage.
Bandit initially debuted the HM6420 at the 2023 ConExpo show. After the show, further evaluation and testing was conducted and the machine was then demonstrated to a variety of customers and dealers at Bandit’s 40th Anniversary event in September of 2023. Final testing of the HM6420 took place in the fourth quarter and the machine will begin production in the first quarter of 2024. The addition of the HM6420 expands the already diverse line of Bandit horizontal grinders available.

CLAY from page 44
such as the company’s Cat D8T R dozer and Cat 323 and 326F excavators. After excavation, the clay is transported to a DuraEdge processing plant, then crushed and screened into a fine powder before being deemed usable.
Once the material arrives on site at the processing facility, DuraEdge uses its D9H dozer, Cat 926M, 962K and 962M wheel loaders and Cat 259D track steer to handle and move the clay through the various stages of the process. A Cat 323 excavator breaks down the clay into just more than an inch in size with the help of a specialty attachment. The primary size reduction is accomplished with an ALLU DH 312 screening bucket, compatible with their Cat excavator. It has giant revolving teeth that shred the clay into smaller, more manageable pieces and prepares it for the secondary crushing process.
Conveyors transport the clay, which then runs through a Rock Engineered Machinery Company Inc. (REMco) vertical shaft impact crusher. The REMco crusher contains a rotor that spins at an impressive 1,800 revolutions per minute, which slings the clay mineral outward into a reinforced steel shell that pulverizes the clay into a viable clay powder. The REMco crusher is in a closed circuit with a screening plant, a Terex-Finlay 683 Supertrack double deck screener. The clay remains in this circuit and will go back through the REMco as many times as necessary until it passes through both decks of the screener. This leaves the final clay no
larger than 5/32-in. minus particle size.
Next, the clay is combined with sand, dependent on the field and the use of the soil. For example, infield mixtures may receive more sand compared with material used for the pitching mound and batter’s box, which requires more hydration. Because this clay is naturally so absorbent and effective asis, no chemicals, preservatives or additives are necessary. The soil is now ready for send-off.
Altogether, this combination of unique clay and specially graded sand creates impeccable stability, moisture control and traction essential to any baseball player’s success, regardless of any rain, sleet or hail. This differentiating mixture also increases player safety by minimizing slips and can even eliminate game downtime. Without concern for harsh weather conditions and with increased player safety, more games can safely continue without the need of rescheduling or postponement, which ultimately helps the league save money and capitalize profitability.
Big-League Dirt With Big-League Results
In addition to this unique infield soil created by DuraEdge, McKnight collaborates closely with MLB staff members, his team of soil experts and the field groundskeepers to address any specific needs of each field. For example, the infield soil for the Boston Red Sox will vary from the San Diego Padres or the Texas Rangers soil because these soils face different climates and therefore require a different
soil makeup.
In addition, DuraEdge uses local sand to better suit each field’s needs.
“This clay is special,” McKnight said. “We ship the clay to our plants. They then use sand that’s available in those places. That allows for the kind of consistent products that MLB teams want. The MLB guys understand the science,” said McKnight, which helps ensure optimal soil and performance.
With minor maintenance required and a substantial lifespan of up to 10 years, DuraEdge’s infield mix has become a staple to many baseball fields nationwide, resulting in a substantial demand. One field alone requires approximately 80-100 tons of material including dirt, clay, quick-drying material and topdressing products. Within a year’s time, DuraEdge excavates, loads and transports approximately 30,000 tons of clay from the Glenshaw formation to meet the demands of its clients. Because of its hard work, DuraEdge is now an official partner of Minor League Baseball and named the “Official Infield Playing Surface of Minor League Baseball.”
While little thought once went into the soil used at baseball fields, its composition now plays a vital role to moisture control, soil stability and the players’ abilities to play safely despite inclement weather. Whether it’s another practice or to play in the World Series, the perfected soil and infield mix helps players perform their best.

NYC Upgrades More Than 8 Mi. of Water Mains in Queens
more than 4.5 acres of sidewalk and 5 mi. of curb were upgraded, and 226 pedestrian ramps were upgraded to meet ADA compliance. The project also upgraded the roads with 24.5 acres of new asphalt.
“The completion of this critically important infrastructure project is a massive win for College Point, which finally has the modern sewer system it has long needed,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “Thank you to our government partners for their work in completing this project, to the families of College Point for their patience and to the members of my office’s College Point Task Force for their advocacy as we work to make this community a better place for all who live here.”
“The College Point sewer project was one of my top priorities since taking office,” said Councilmember Vickie Paladino. “I could see how the people of College Point had suffered under this long-delayed project and I took aggressive action to see its completion. Between weekly phone calls with DDC and regular visits to the site with the contractors, the work began moving faster than it had under any other elected official. I’m proud to be the City Council Member who finally delivered College Point’s roads back to them.”
“I am encouraged by what these infrastructure improvements will do to help alleviate significant flooding and other sewer system issues in College Point,” said New Yok State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. “Our residents have been dealing with the destructive consequences of poor stormwater drainage for too many years. There are still areas in need of remediation and we must not ignore the fact that this is a good start but additional areas must be addressed. While the DDC has assured me that these upgrades will have an immediate and lasting impact on our water mains and street conditions, we must continue to take a proactive approach in combating the growing complications of climate change in
our most vulnerable communities.”
“Residents of College Point have lived in fear of the rain for far too long, as even a small shower can flood streets, homes and storefronts,” said New York State Senator John Liu. “These water and sewer upgrades will not just provide needed relief for the area’s persistent flooding problems, but allow for some long-overdue peace of mind. Infrastructure
upgrades continue to be a top priority for northeast Queens, and we are grateful to DEP, DDC and DOT for working together to bring sustainability and resiliency to the residents of College Point.”

Del. Receives Federal Funds to Repair Dune Breaches On Indian River Inlet
Delaware Gov. John Carney announced Sept. 12 that after a pair of breaches this year, as well as several near-breaches of coastal dunes just north of the Indian River Inlet Bridge, two state agencies will be assigned the task of protecting the beach and Delaware Highway 1 before the upcoming winter storm season.
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is slated to add additional metal sheets to the shoreline and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) will perform an emergency sand replenishment project between now and December, Delaware Business Now reported Sept. 19.
Delaware’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, secured $10 million in federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help pay for the beach replenishment effort.
Each time that storms severely damaged the shore earlier in 2024, access was temporarily cut off to the bridge, and crews moved in to make repairs.
“This area is one of the most visible signs of the increasing effect of storms on our state,” Carney said in a press release. “State crews have been engaged in continuous repair work over the last month, but we are still seeing threats to the dunes and the highway at many high tides, so we need to put larger protections into place in the near term. I appreciate all the crews for their tireless work to keep our community and our roadways safe every day.”
All Hands On Deck for Repair Effort
Carney said his administration would continue to work with state Sens. Russ Huxtable and Gerald Hocker, state Reps. Pete Schwartzkopf and Ronald Gray, and other concerned legislators, including Carper, over the next several months on future plans for the inlet to ensure its protection and restoration.
“I am glad to work with our state and federal partners to help secure this funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” Carper said in a press release issued by his office.
“Maintenance of the north and south shores of the inlet is a critical component of the storm management systems that protect [Del. Highway 1] and the bridge from extreme weather and other impacts of climate change. This funding
Crews from both DelDOT and DNREC have spent the last several weeks battling erosion conditions in the area, including creating a temporary dune from rocks and sand, in addition to hauling in truckloads of sand to the Atlantic Ocean shoreline, much of which has subsequently been washed away. Work has gone on six days a week and crews have monitored the area at every high tide.
DelDOT expects to vertically install additional steel sheetpiles into the ground to create a wall in the coming weeks to protect the roadway bed. DNREC has contracted with a dredging company that can mobilize in late November to undertake the needed renourishment work.
“While we have been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers [USACE] on a longer-term solution, it is clear that even a matter of weeks might make a difference this winter, so the state will move forward now on a significant replenishment project to restore the beach and dune,” explained Shawn M. Garvin, secretary of the DNREC. “We appreciate the support from our congressional delegation, especially Senator Carper, in working on future measures and federal funding as we will continue to need that after this action. Use of the beach and parking lot at the north inlet may be restricted in coming months as the work progresses and we appreciate the public’s cooperation.”
DelDOT Secretary Nicole Majeski noted, “Delaware Route 1 is critical for daily travel and for emergency vehicle access in the area, so additional steps are merited to protect it. These measures are necessary to maintain the roadway’s daily operation and hopefully avoid timely and costly repairs from potential breaches.”
will help Delaware, and the Army Corps of Engineers implement a long-term plan to secure the dunes and protect the infrastructure surrounding the Indian River Inlet Bridge.”
Carper also authored provisions that were enacted by the federal Water Resources Development Act of 2022 and signed into law by President Biden in December 2022 to directly help the Indian River Inlet.
They included:
• Extending the current period of federal assistance for the operation of the sand bypass plant to 2034. The bill also creates a path to authorize an additional 50 years of assistance — extending federal support for the project to 2084.
• Directing the USACE to renourish the state beach north of the Indian River Inlet when the sand bypass plant is not running, or its operation is insufficient. This work would be similar to the practice for renourishing other beaches in Delaware.
• Addressing recreational facility damage caused by a lack of USACE maintenance at the Indian River Inlet by directing the federal agency to repair the damaged sidewalk, gazebo, and other public facilities.
“It’s critically important that we strengthen the area around the Indian River Inlet to protect the communities, businesses, and recreation that thrives in the region,” Carney said. “I’m grateful to the Army Corps of Engineers and to Senator Carper for securing additional funding to help with this important work. It will make a huge difference.”

Survey: Overall Industry Outlook Remains Positive
“The value of construction starts rose 1.8 percent year-over-year in September,” said AGC.
But the sector “edged down 0.9 percent year-to-date in the first nine months of 2024 compared to January-September 2023,” ConstructConnect reported.
Nonresidential building starts rose 1 percent for the month but fell 7.5 percent yearto-date. Civil starts increased.
Among the 25 largest categories, AGC found that the best-performing year-to-date are electric power infrastructure and airports.
On a year-to-date basis through September, total construction starts were up 2 percent from 2023, according to Dodge Construction analysis.
Nonbuilding starts slipped 3 percent over that year and miscellaneous nonbuilding starts were up 10 percent.
Environmental public works starts were up 7 percent; highway and bridge starts, 3 percent and utility/gas starts down 23 percent.
Nonresidential building starts rose 2 percent year-to-date; institutional starts were up 13 percent; commercial starts were down 2 percent.
According to AGC, the Fed’s take on the construction picture is that economic activity was “little changed” since early September.
The government reported commercial real estate markets were generally flat, although data center and infrastructure projects boosted activity in some areas.
“Contacts noted that it remained difficult to find workers with certain skills or in some industries, such as technology, manufacturing and construction.”
According to ConstructConnect, AGC officials urged Congress to increase funding for construction workforce training and education programs.
The association believes the funding will help address workforce shortages likely holding back employment growth in the sector.
“Enabling more people to learn about construction as a career opportunity is essential,” said Jeffrey Shoaf, CEO of AGC, adding that learning would help fill the openings created by the infrastructure, power and manufacturing projects under way.
Industry Looking Toward Future
Also tracking the construction jobs market, and chiefly how IIJA stacks up jobs-wise at its midway point is ARTBA.
The transportation builders association said the highway, street and bridge construction industry added nearly 40,000 jobs over the first half of IIJA.
“Industry employment surpassed record levels in 2023 and has continued rising since on a year-over-year basis,” said ARTBA.
Looking forward, the Eno Center for Transportation believes 2024 could be “the tipping point” for IIJA funding
to “start pouring out of the U.S. Treasury.”
Jeff Davis, Eno senior fellow, recounted that IIJA loaded the Highway Trust Fund with 24 percent more money for highway account programs.
The 2021 bipartisan bill also allotted 32 percent for mass transit. Increases afterward are estimated in the 2- to 3-percent range per year.
Davis said through the first 10 months of fiscal year 2024, highway account outlays are up 20 percent from the 10month mark pre-IIJA, in FY 2021.
“And mass transit account outlays are up 49 percent over FY 2021,” said Davis, adding that the 2021 level suffered more from COVID aid displacement.
At IIJA’s half-way point a year ago, the Brookings Institute predicted that IIJA’s total economic impact would “continue to evolve.”
Adie Tomer, senior fellow, said that as more states and localities put federal dollars to work, an increased demand for skilled labor was expected.
He said that economists expected a high number of separations within infrastructure occupations would continue to challenge recruiting and retention.
“Construction of IIJA-funded projects will last well beyond 2026, when the legislation expires,” said Tomer.
Inflation Reduction Act tax credits will support energyrelated projects for another nine years.
“America needs to get serious about growing and diversifying the infrastructure talent pipeline, because time is run-
ning out,” he stressed a year ago.
Marcum, a construction accounting firm, found in an industry survey that in 2024 the outlook across the board is a positive one.
“Our survey reveals that despite the challenges facing the construction industry, the overall outlook remains positive,” said Joseph Natarelli.
The top concerns revealed in the survey can help business strategize for the future, said Roger Gingerich, leading Marcum’s Midwest construction practice.
The survey found that ongoing labor recruiting and retention struggles remain a top concern for construction companies. In fact, 29 percent of Marcum survey respondents cited it as the biggest threat to their business.
The Associated Builders & Contractors noted that though construction firms have made gains, BLS statistics show a sharp decrease in job openings
“At the same time, there is not a lot of labor out there but demand for labor has subsided a little,” said Zack Fritz, ABC economist.
As of September, construction unemployment was at 3.7 percent, just above the August mark of 3.2 percent.
“To be a craft worker in construction, you generally need to have experience and credentials in the construction field,” said AGC’s Simonson said.
He called it a chronic problem and despite the economic gains he believes the labor employment picture will continue to hamstring the industry. CEG

Woods CRW Helps Pa. Firm Find Tremendous Iron Value
With the Mecalac’s unique boom design, operators are one attachment change away from using the same machine they dug with to load up materials.
TAYLOR from page 20
Taylor found some surprising and unique aspects of the Mecalac machine that have been very useful.
“With the articulated boom and a 72-inch skid steer bucket, I use the Mecalac to clean the berm of a road,” he said. “When you rotate the boom to the left it cocks your bucket 10 degrees, so you are actually putting a crown back into the road. I had been considering putting a tiltrotator on the machine and once I experienced this, I decided I didn’t need it for the type of work I do, although I certainly can understand where a landscaper or someone who handles a lot of brush could see the benefits of a tiltrotator.”
Taylor is so impressed with the Mecalac 6MCR that he is now considering purchasing a Mecalac compact wheel loader.
“They make some really impressive loaders that will travel down the road at over 20 miles per hour.
“I am now doing work for our township that I would not have been able to look at before. With the reach of the Mecalac, I am mowing for the township that they could not reach with their traditional boom mowers. I am able to reach out 18 feet with the Mecalac. I have a pole saw, which has a 24inch blade and will give me a 28-foot reach for me to trim trees for the township.
“What we are looking at is areas on town roads where trees have formed a canopy over the highway that does not allow any light in. With this setup, I will easily be able to trim those areas with out putting any men
in a bucket or lift. This pole saw is designed to work on a skid steer, but when I put it on the boom of my Mecalac, I have gained an additional 14 feet.”
Currently, Taylor Excavating is using the Mecalac to demolish a small road bridge.
“The Mecalac is using a hammer to break up the concrete with the great hydraulic flow that the Mecalac produces I am going through 8 inches of concrete like it was nothing,” he said. “I have a bit that I had manufactured that allows me to drive 24-inch schedule 40 steel pipe into the ground. We use it for a structure pole to install gates. We’ve used it to hold rip rap in place along creeks that we build. For the gas industry I have driven thousands of these for supports to hold valves.”
The coupling system on a Mecalac is unique unto itself.
“I had to make a couple of modifications on some of my attachments to make it work, but my gut feeling is telling me that this coupling system is going to hold up longer than your standard pin grab system.”
Taylor is certain he has received tremendous value using his Mecalac.
“I have had other local contractors stick up their nose at what I’m doing,” he said. “But they can go out and purchase a skid steer and pay $80,000. I am getting a skid steer, an excavator, a loader, a telehandler, all-in-one machine and with some of the Mecalac features, I can execute many jobs that you wouldn’t be able to do at all with a standard skid steer or excavator.” CEG (All photos courtesy of Woods CRW.)

John Mielke Joins
ABC as Sr. Director of Apprenticeship
Associated Builders and Contractors has named John Mielke as its senior director of apprenticeship. The former ABC Wisconsin chapter president will provide strategic direction, transformational leadership and innovative education solutions to ABC’s 67 chapters and 23,000 members and their apprenticeship trusts nationwide.
In this key role, Mielke will lead education programs that develop construction’s next generation of craft professionals, including government-registered apprenticeship programs with Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 — or ERISA — compliance requirements and flexible, competency-based and market-driven education methodologies. He also will defend the principles of merit shop construction before regulatory and legislative bodies and represent ABC before the media, external agencies, corporations, partnerships, trade associations and regional and national workforce groups.
“John has been a champion of construction education for more than 30 years at ABC’s Wisconsin chapter, which boasts one of the association’s most ambitious and successful apprenticeship programs,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development.
“He’s the ideal leader to help ABC chapters’ 800 existing education programs...”
“He’s the ideal leader to help ABC chapters’ 800 existing education programs — including more than 450 government-registered apprenticeship programs across 20 different occupations — deliver value to the contracting community. And he will help ABC members continue to build their own innovative, merit-based craft education programs to address a workforce shortage that currently tops half a million.”
Mielke’s career at ABC Wisconsin spanned 32 years, beginning as apprenticeship coordinator in 1992 and culminating with 12 years as president of one of ABC’s largest chapters. He grew the chapter’s membership to more than 1,000 and its government-registered apprenticeship program to 2,400 apprentices annually in 13 trades. Under his leadership, the chapter achieved major legislative victories protecting worker choice, including repealing Wisconsin’s prevailing wage law, passing right-to-work legislation and banning government-mandated project labor agreements. He was named an Icon of Construction by the Wisconsin Daily Reporter in 2019.
“When I joined ABC of Wisconsin 32 years ago, I was an apprenticeship manager,” said Mielke. “Fast forward to today, and ABC of Wisconsin’s apprenticeship program is now one of the largest in the country, so this is a full-circle moment for me. I look forward to taking on this new challenge to grow ABC apprenticeship programs nationally.”

The interview was hosted on the Machinery Pete show on RFD-TV, a channel that features programming devoted to rural issues, concerns and interests. This channel is available on most cable TV packages and can be streamed using major streaming services, including Roku and Apple TV. For more information, visit www.thempadvantage.com
Machinery Pete is the fastest growing show offering news, market trends and industry changes along with being a marketplace for buyers and sellers of used farm and construction equipment. Machinery Pete also is known for offering farmers and contractors a vast selection of equipment listings in one place with innovative search tools that make it easy and fast to find relevant equipment.
Founded in 1989 by Greg Peterson, Machinery Pete has
come a long way from its beginnings in his home office in Rochester, Minn., where he passionately researched, tracked and reported on auction prices both with ag and construction equipment. In 2014, Farm Journal and Machinery Pete partnered to provide a more efficient marketplace for buying and selling used ag equipment plus expanding his platform to reach deeper into the ag and construction world.
Machinery Pete has become well known worldwide because of his ability to offer interesting stories and correct information to the ag and construction world through social media and his many online tools, plus his weekly TV programs which Jack Lyon has watched for years.
In July 2015, MachineryPete.com launched its marketplace with leading edge marketing solutions for dealers, informed and built with the online equipment shopper in mind and creates meaningful connections between buyers and sellers of ag and construction equipment Worldwide. The company headquarters is in Chicago, Ill.
Because of Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) and Alex Lyon & Son having enjoyed a long business relationship and friendship spanning four decades, CEG also felt it was time to help tell the Alex Lyon and Son story.
“Jack [Lyon] and CEG have worked together since he began conducting construction equipment auctions more than 40 years ago,” said Ted McKeon, president and publisher of Construction Equipment Guide.
“Jack and Alex Lyon & Son have been loyal, longtime advertisers and CEG has attended and covered hundreds of his auctions, including his sales at the annual Florida auctions, over these many years in print and online. We greatly appreciate our business relationship and personal friendship with him and his team.” CEG
Debuts New Construction Foreman Certification Program
The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) released its new Construction Foreman Certification Program, another comprehensive program in its Construction Leadership Series.
Developed in conjunction with industry subject matter experts, this online training and certification program provides a flexible, turnkey solution to train and qualify current and upcoming foremen in the critical areas of people management, communication, quality, safety and productivity.
Research from the Construction Industry Institute highlights a significant gap in formal training for construction foremen, as many craft professionals are promoted to foreman without the proper preparation. The research further states that industry investment in training for foremen is “one of the biggest opportunities for the industry to improve productivity and performance,” yet many contractors cite time and resource constraints as barriers.
NCCER’s new foreman training program eliminates these bar-
riers by providing a self-paced, online program accessible anytime, anywhere. The engaging courses include audio, text, activities and videos with industry leaders talking to individuals through practical, real-world lessons.
“Foremen are the backbone of our industry. They make plans reality by leading people, managing work, solving problems and making decisions. The foreman is crucial to project success,” said Boyd Worsham, NCCER President and CEO.
“NCCER’s Construction Foreman Certification Program will allow more individuals to invest in their future, and more companies to invest in their people through professionally designed learning and certification.”
Ultimately, the program serves two key organizational objectives — risk reduction and employee retention. It can shorten the learning curve and help current and future foremen become highly effective leaders more quickly.

AED Outlines Tax Priorities to Ways & Means Committee
On Oct. 15, Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) submitted its priorities to the House Ways & Means Committee’s Republican Tax Teams that are charged with studying key tax provisions from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and preparing for next Congress’ expected reform debate.
“With much of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expiring, it’s imperative that Congress make pro-growth, capital investment incentivizing provisions a permanent part of the tax code,” said AED’s President and CEO Brian P. McGuire.
“In 2017, AED was at the table during the TCJA debate and significantly impacted the final product to benefit equipment dealers. Once again, AED and its members will lead the way to ensure the equipment industry’s priorities are fully considered and lawmakers understand the importance of tax policy that propels economic growth, investment, and job creation.”
In its comments, the association focused on five key areas:
• Permanently reinstating 100 percent bonus depreciation
• Making permanent the 199A pass-
