Michigan, California and Wisconsin all claim Paul Bunyan and his Big Blue Ox, the University of Kentucky claims Big Blue Madness during basketball season, but little Rhode Island is the only state to claim the Big Blue Bug. The Big Blue Bug, or, as he is officially named, Nibbles Woodaway, is the giant blue termite that sits atop Route 95 South in Providence, R.I. It is the unofficial mascot for the state, the invention of the Goldman family, the owners of New England Pest Control. For more than 70 years, New England Pest Control has helped the locals control their insect infestations. For nearly 30 years, the company has been much better known for its distinctive landmark hovering over the highway. Nibbles has been a Rhode Island institution since 1980, giving Hasbro’s

Mr. Potato Head a run for his icon money. Some 58 ft. long, 9 ft. tall and weighing in at two tons, the termite is known throughout the nation. From movies (“Dumb and Dumber”) to cartoons, to TV and newspapers, architecture, design literature and more, the Bug has caused joy, smiles and more than a few car accidents. RIDOT Pulls the Switch Every year before Dec. 1, the bug is lit up with a special ceremony for Christmas. This year, for its 17th Annual Holiday Lighting, the Big Blue Bug honored the engineering Iway team at Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). During construction of the nearly finished $610 million highway that has improved traffic dramatically throughout the state’s capital since it was opened in phases two years see RIDOT page 8

Gov. Moves Funds for Patriots Bridge Designs Considered for New N.Y.-Vt. Bridge By Glen Johnson

AP POLITICAL WRITER

BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick moved Dec. 4 to defuse a potential political time bomb by announcing he will no longer use federal economic stimulus money to pay for a pedestrian footbridge sought by the billionaire owner of the New England Patriots. An administration aide briefed on the decision said the $9 million project “will be funded with other non-ARRA dollars,’’ using the acronym for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The person spoke on condition of anonymity before the decision was formally announced. The reversal came just three weeks after the Metropolitan Planning Organization approved using stimulus money for the project despite criticism from state legislators and the Massachusetts Republican Party. Patrick is up for re-election next fall, and another of his critics was Treasurer Timothy Cahill, a former Democrat now running for governor as an independent.

A month before the approval, team owner Robert Kraft and his wife, Myra, made the maximum allowable campaign contributions to Patrick and the Massachusetts Democratic Party. In the case of the governor, that was $500 each; in the case of the party, that was $5,000 each. A year earlier, Robert Kraft gave similar donations to Patrick and the party as the state was designating his property a special growth district. The donations were Kraft’s first to the governor and first in four years to the party. About the same time, Patrick was seen with Kraft in a luxury box at Gillette Stadium. At the time, Patrick denied a quid pro quo. He did so again last month, telling The Associated Press, “There’s no ‘there’ there.’’ The governor added: “We’re making these decisions on the merits. ... There are others who have asked for investment of Recovery Act dollars or federal bonding dollars who have contributed to us and we’ve said no because those projects did not stand on their own.’’ The Krafts are proposing to use

a 500-acre site across the street from Gillette Stadium for an office park. The planned bridge would connect parking lots on both sides of busy Route 1 and allow patrons of the office site to reach not only the stadium, but also the Krafts’ Patriot Place entertainment plazas. Patrick said the project would create 4,500 permanent jobs and 4,000 construction jobs. He proclaimed the project “shovelready’’ during the Nov. 13 interview, but the aide said Friday the footbridge funding was being switched because it cannot be built quickly enough. Instead, the stimulus money will be spent on other work. The aide said two other projects in Amherst and Worcester also will no longer be financed with stimulus money but other funding. The aide would not identify that funding source. A Patriots official said the team was not involved in the decision. “That decision is coming from the Statehouse. That doesn’t affect us at all. We’re not involved in that process,’’ said team spokesman Stacey James. Contact Edwin M. McKeon Jr.

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP) New Yorkers and Vermonters affected by the closure of the Lake Champlain Bridge linking the two states got the opportunity Dec. 12 to see six possible designs for a new span and to submit their opinions about them. The designs were put on display at a series of meetings in Ticonderoga, approximately 10 miles south of the bridge linking Crown Point, N.Y., and Addison, Vt. People were asked to fill out a survey seeking their opinions on the various bridge designs. Some residents said they preferred one of two arch designs because of their similarities to the existing bridge. Cathy Robarts, a retired social services worker, said an arch bridge would fit in better with the rural setting. “This is the country,’’ Robarts said. “They look more like moun-

tains. The others remind me more of what you’d see in the city.’’ Also among the designs were two flat bridges and two that featured elaborate cables linked to towers. “I’m willing to accept what they come up with as long as they use the input they got here. Give us some say,’’ said Tom Jaquish, a retired construction worker from Moriah, N.Y., who attended the morning session with his brother Fred, an IBM engineer from Addison. The bridge was closed Oct. 16 after being found to be unsafe because of severe deterioration of its concrete piers. Closing the 2,184-ft. bridge, used by approximately 3,400 vehicles a day, has disrupted lives on both sides of the border, forcing motorists to take 100-mi. detours or ride ferries to reach jobs or medical appointments. “I don’t expect them to just get over it. Their entire lives have been disrupted,’’ said Diane Lanpher, a Vermont state representative from Addison. Transportation officials from both states and engineers from HNTB, the Kansas City-based firm that will design the new bridge, gave a Power Point presentation of the six possible designs, then were available to members of the public who filled Ticonderoga’s town hall for the meetings. The public has until Jan. 11 to submit comments on the project. New York and Vermont officials will make their choice soon after, and then HNTB’s design team will get to work, with the goal of starting construction in the spring and opening the new bridge in the summer of 2011, said James Boni, the bridge project manager for New York state’s Department of Transportation. Boni said the new bridge will cost between $65 million and $90 million, depending the design chosen. The new span also will have two lanes, but with wider shoulders to accommodate bicyclists. Sidewalks for the new bridge also are planned. The old bridge, opened in 1929, will be demolished with explosives, most likely in mid-January, Boni said. “I’ve been telling people to go down and say goodbye,’’ Lanpher said.

RIDOT Officials Throw the Switch for Nibbles Woodaway RIDOT from page 1

ago, Nibbles got a bird’s eye view of the thousands of workers supervised by RIDOT to build the impressive highway. With 5,200 energy-saving LED holiday lights adorning Nibbles, the R.I. Department of Transportation team that produced the Iway, assembled once again and performed the annual ceremonial lighting honors. Having watched the entire project from a bug’s eye view — and, you can take that literally, because Nibbles was only some 6 ft. from the 195W-95S ramp during the entire construction process — the Iway project reached a significant milestone in November, with the opening of the last highway segment of the relocated interchange of I-195 and I-95 in Providence. “We couldn’t think of a better group of people to do the honors. The Iway project makes Rhode Island better,” said New England Pest owner Steve Goldman.

Nibbles Woodaway, the Big Blue Bug, is fully lit with 5,200 lights, a Rudolph nose and antlers as he overlooks thousands of drivers circumventing the new Iway over Providence, R.I., each day this holiday season.

Two Tons of Bug The bug is exactly 928 times the size of an actual termite. Each wing is 40 ft. long, each leg 11 ft. long and each antenna seven feet in length. Without question the largest termite on earth, he was the brainchild of then-owner Leonard Yale Goldman circa 1979 when the company bought its building. Very sharply, Goldman Sr. wanted to make certain that potential customers knew who they were. According to quahog.org, the bug was made of wire mesh and fiberglass over four days in October 1980 at a cost of $30,000. Originally purple in color, the same as its microscopic counterpart, the sun soon bleached the bug blue, as it has remained. A landmark for traffic reporters for decades, each major holiday the bug’s dimensions are augmented. First comes a 300-lb. Uncle Sam hat and white Styrofoam beard for the 4th of July. On Halloween, one can see him adorned with a witch’s hat and broom. At Christmas, he gets a blinking red nose and hundreds of other lights. His TV credits include Oprah Winfrey and several Farrelly Brothers movies. He has been mistaken for “big game” on occasion, when owners found his underside shot up with buckshot. When he left his perch for the first time in 22 years in 2002, to be repainted, the company received 500 calls from drivers wondering where he had gone. Pulling the Switch At 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 23, at corporate headquarters, 161 O’Connell Street, Providence, owner and president Goldman joined RIDOT’s Chief of Construction Frank Corrao, Project Engineer Lambri Zerva, Deputy Director Chuck Alves, Resident Engineer Raymond Castigliego and Chief Public Affairs Officer Dana Alexander-Nolfe for the lighting ceremony on the roof as hun-

dreds of cars whizzed by below. Corrao was the RIDOT executive who actually got to physically throw the switch. President Goldman was effusive in his praise for RIDOT and explained why they were chosen this season. “Each year, right before Thanksgiving, we select a member of the community to ceremonially ‘flip the switch’ that will light up the Big Blue Bug,” said Goldman. “The principal completion of the Iway made it obvious to us that we should ask RIDOT to be our guest in turning on the lights. “Working with the RIDOT was a pleasure (throughout the six-year process),” said Goldman. “Each of their representa-

tives was professional and courteous. They kept us apprised of the status of the project, as it pertained to us and made every effort to assuage any concerns we may have had at the time.” Goldman admitted that he had some concerns during the many years it took to finish the highway, and sometimes wondered if Nibbles’ nose might get bopped by a crane or two. “Of course, we had some concern related to the proximity of the ramp to our building, but we were assured that all would be well,” he added. “And it turned out fine. “As we are not a destination business — we service homeowners and businesses at their respective locations — there wasn’t any effect on the traffic coming to us,” said Goldman. “And, as we are already a widely known landmark, some would say, ‘icon,’ the location of the ramp now gives drivers traveling 195 West to 95 South an up close and personal look at Nibbles. “In the end, all turned out well and we could not be happier with both the project and our relationship with the great people at RIDOT,” he added. Alexander-Nolfe agreed, saying, “The Big Blue Bug is an important and respected Ocean State icon and, while RIDOT has been building the Iway, the Big Blue Bug has been right there with us. While the Iway project won’t be completed until 2012, we expect Nibbles Woodaway to watch over the Iway for decades to come. We want to thank New England Pest Control and all Rhode Islanders for their patience and understanding while RIDOT has been busy building this project.” Frank Corrao of RIDOT lights the Big Blue Bug. Cheering him on (L-R) are New (This story also can be found on England Pest Control owner Steve Goldman; Karen Vecchio, The RDW Group; Lambri Zerva, Iway project manager; Raymond Castigliego, resident engineer; Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site William “Chuck” Alves, deputy director; and RIDOT Chief Public Affairs Officer at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Bidders Vie for Late Model Rental Equipment at Alex

Nathan Howell is now 13 years old, but said his father taught him how to operate equipment, including this 2007 Case 450 skid steer, when he was only five years old.

The crowd gathers to place the highest bid on the lots for sale.

A

lex Lyon & Son held an auction Dec. 12 in Ledyard, Conn.

A bidder tests the 54 ft. (16.4 m) reach capacity on this 2001 Gradall 544D4S telescopic forklift.

The sale featured late model rental fleet construction and support equipment, aerial lifts, and trucks and trailers. The rent-ready equipment came from several national rental fleets to make room for new purchases.

While he wasn’t planning on purchasing any equipment, nine-year old Marcus from Burrillville, R.I., certainly enjoyed climbing in the equipment, including this Hyster 200 forklift.

Greg Tenedine of North Haven Construction in North Haven, Conn., was interested in the heavy equipment for sale at the auction.

Lynwood Perary of Preston, Conn., didn’t have to drive too far to attend Alex Lyon & Son’s auction in Ledyard, Conn.

Jack Lyon owns and operates the hugely successful and highly respected Alex Lyon & Son Auctioneers Inc.

This John Deere 650G crawler tractor could be very useful at Harrison Griffin’s, Beaver Brook Farm, in Suffield, Conn.

Three prospective equipment buyers bundle up in warm clothing for the chilly auction on Dec. 12.

Two bidders look over the engine of a 2000 Lull 644D-34 telescopic forklift before the auction began at 9:30 a.m.

This bidder appears very interested in a Hobart welder for sale.
