NAWIC’s 30th Annual Construction Expo Held in Augusta
T
he 30th Annual Construction Expo of Maine was held April 14 and 15 at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Maine.
The expo, sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Maine Chapter, featured 175 indoor exhibits and more than 2 acres of outdoor exhibits by leading providers of products and services to the construction industry. During the expo, guests had the opportunity to attend several seminars on a variety of topics, including an Enviro-Septic technology course, an introduction to Lead Enterprise, an underground safety seminar, an overview of current and impending regulations affecting the construction industry and a gravel pit and quarry compliance workshop. NAWIC’s Maine Chapter expressed its appreciation for the many companies, organizations and attendees that helped make the 30th annual expo a success. “We are grateful for their continued support of NAWIC, the Chapter Scholarship Program and Construction Expo of Maine,” a spokesperson said. For a complete list of sponsors and for more information, visit http://www.nawicmaine.org/expo.html.
Milton CAT, one of the largest Caterpillar distributors in North America, had an array of Caterpillar equipment on display.

Scott Bridges of Bridges Construction, Bangor, Maine, just purchased this Hyundai 210LC from TB Equipment, also in Bangor.
Chadwick-BaRoss, the Volvo dealer of Maine and New Hampshire, made this rubber-tired excavator available for close inspection.
Nortrax displayed for the first time in New England the new John Deere 764 high speed dozer. This tracked dozer combines the speed of a motorgrader with the flotation of a crawler dozer.

DISPLAY ADS/ Work Resumes on Navy Base Building CLASSIFIEDS Sagamore Bridge Boosts R.I. Economy BOURNE, Mass. (AP) Construction has resumed on the Sagamore Bridge and that could mean headaches for anyone trying to get on or off Cape Cod for the next few months. The bridge has been reduced to one lane in each direction while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers performs maintenance and repairs on the 75-year-old bridge. The first phase of construction caused major backups on Route 6 last fall. Officials hope to complete the spring phase before Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the summer tourism season. The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce is advising motorists to allot extra travel time and, if possible, avoid using the bridge at peak weekday commuting times from 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Drivers also may consider using the Bourne Bridge as an alternative.
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) State and local officials said a $150 million construction spree at Naval Station Newport is providing a much-needed boost to the state’s sputtering economy. The projects started last year and are expected to continue through next year. Navy officials as well as members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation were at the base on March 1 to mark the start of construction on a new $19.2 million fitness center, which could provide up to 300 construction jobs. Most of the projects are the result of the Pentagon’s 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act, which downsized some military bases but spurred growth at others. Sen. Jack Reed told The Providence Journal that the base’s growth comes “in the nick of time.”

This father and son team traveled from Glastonbury, Conn., to attend the Davis auction on April 10, and although John Cavanna (L) enjoys test driving this Morooka MST-800 track dump, he wouldn’t find much use for it while working at his job at the Hartford Police Department. His father, Paul, might like it for his farm, though.
