Visitors and businesspeople who travel through Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city, would probably ignore an 86-acre section of the waterfront. Since the 1970s, this neglected area has been home to a collection of abandoned buildings, barely used parking lots and brownfields. The Christina River borders the area and creates marshy wetlands and a shoreline along the north side.
After a lengthy environmental study and assessment, this land is about to change. Planners have begun working with various entities to develop this site. The Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC) believes that this location

The new year has brought work zone cameras, installed to protect both the driving public and transportation construction workers, into focus. Michigan joins other states adopting safety camera programs, and many proving camera technology reduces driver speeds and protects construction workers. In fact, Indiana logged a 70 percent reduction in speeding when it installed the cameras.

Md. officials unveiled the new design for Baltimore’s new Francis Scott Key Bridge on Feb. 3, almost a year after a container ship slammed into the old span.
Md. officials unveiled the new design for Baltimore’s new Francis Scott Key Bridge on Feb. 3, 2025, almost a year after a container ship slammed into the old span, sending it tumbling into the Patapsco River and killing six workers in the process.
“This is a great day for Maryland,” said Gov. Wes Moore as the design was revealed. “But it’s not lost on me that today’s triumph was born out of tragedy.”
Renderings of the new structure show a soaring cable-stayed bridge to replace the old steel truss bridge that was destroyed in the early hours of March 26, 2024, when the container ship Dali slammed into the span.
Once it is built — the contractor predicts the bridge could open in fall 2028 — the new structure will
be the first cable-stayed bridge in the state and restore I695/Baltimore Beltway, a major connection between Dundalk and Baltimore. The freeway also is a principle commercial route on the East Coast.
The loss of the bridge disrupted supply chains and shut down a toll road used by more than 30,000 vehicles a day, and which collects $56 million in tolls per year, Maryland Matters reported.
“This directive isn’t about nostalgia, it’s about necessity, because you can’t have a fully functioning Port of Baltimore … without the Key Bridge,” Moore said during the bridge design’s debut event at Tradepoint Atlantic, not far from the remnants of the destroyed structure.
The governor also announced an
investment of $15 million in Tradepoint Atlantic’s terminal container project, which is expected to increase container capacity at the complex by 70 percent. That project is expected to generate as much as $1 billion in private investments and create up to 8,000 jobs.
The new Key Bridge will carry four lanes, with two in each direction. In addition, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the rebuilt bridge will provide 230 ft. of clearance for ships passing underneath, compared with the old span’s clearance height of 185 ft.
He characterized the design unveiling as a “significant milestone on our path to make the
Baltimore region and the vital Northeast corridor whole again.”
“The Port [of Baltimore] is an economic driver for all of Maryland and the nation,” he said, noting that the new structure will be “a working bridge for a working city,” though its designs are not fully finalized.
Now that the initial plans and renderings have been revealed, the next step in the bridge’s construction is razing what remains of the old structure, according to Moore. Demolition is expected in spring 2025 and construction will begin shortly after, he said.
Preconstruction operations already have begun, such as collecting soil samples and mapping subsurface waterways, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) announced in
January 2025.
Also in January 2025, the Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $75 million contract to hire three firms that will oversee construction management services on the project under the name Bridging Maryland Partnership. The group will oversee work by the project contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Co., to ensure that “the accelerated design and construction process remains on track,” according to MDTA.
“Maryland is a bridge between America and the rest of the world,” Moore added. “Commerce and trade are the bedrock of our state. And we will continue to make investments that honor our tradition. We still have work to do, but this is a very important step forward.” CEG

A proposed restoration of passenger rail service between Scranton, Pa. and New York City cleared another hurdle in January, advancing to the next stage of a federal program designed to identify new and viable passenger train routes.
The Scranton to New York Penn Station (NYP) Passenger Rail Corridor project is among the first five in the nation to advance to the second stage of the three-step Corridor Identification and Development Program, the TimesTribune reported.
The second stage includes the completion of a Service Development Plan (SDP) for the proposed route and serves as a precursor to the third step, which could deliver potentially hundreds of millions of dollars for rail construction and related work in advance of the Big Apple-bound trains running again.
Larry Malski, president of the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority (PNRRA) told the Scranton news outlet that his agency is making plans to begin the construction bid process, which then “allows us to start accessing, after we complete step two, the bigger amounts of funding that are out there.”
As proposed, the restored service would see Amtrak passenger trains run between Scranton and Manhattan’s Penn Station with stops in the Pa. towns of Mount Pocono and East Stroudsburg, as well as in the N.J. cities of Blairstown, Dover, Morristown, Montclair and Newark.
An Amtrak study released in March 2023 found that restoring such a service would generate $84 million in new economic activity annually, creating jobs on both sides of the Pa.-N.J. border.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is taking the lead in developing the SDP, which will include:
• stakeholder engagement with railroads, agencies and the public;
• service options analysis and transportation planning;
• capital project identification, conceptualization and cost estimating;
• environmental analysis; and
• financial and implementation planning.

)A proposed restoration of passenger rail service between Scranton, Pa., and New York City cleared another hurdle in January, advancing to the next stage of a federal program designed to identify new and viable passenger train routes.
“Under Governor Josh Shapiro’s leadership, PennDOT is aggressively putting additional federal and state transportation investments to work for Pennsylvanians, whether it’s fixing our roads and bridges or restoring and improving passenger rail service,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said in a news release.
“Advancing this project ensures we will leave no stone unturned as we grow the northeastern region’s economy and mobility. We are steadfast in our commitment to the public, business leaders and many more who look forward to restoring this passenger rail connection.”
The route from Scranton, Pa., to New York City last served passenger trains in 1970 as part of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Today, the entire right-of-way is still intact, with most of it in active use by various public rail operators.
Restoring it — which could happen as early as 2028 or 2029, if plans come to fruition — has long been a goal of rail advocates and supportive elected officials alike, the Times-Tribune noted.
Much of the progress they have
celebrated in recent years was made possible by the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, a signature legislative achievement of former President Joe Biden.
The Scranton to New York-Penn Station rail corridor has been the subject of numerous studies, including the Amtrak Connects US Corridor Vision Plan, and longrange transportation proposals that show growing demand for intercity passenger rail service along a corridor that has heavy auto traffic and unpredictable travel times for commuters.
PennDOT said that upgrading the rail corridor will provide a transportation option for historically under-served northeastern Appalachian Pa. and northwestern N.J.
The corridor study and development are made possible by the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) corridor identification and development program in the bipartisan infrastructure law, with the
goal of developing formal planning studies and performing preliminary engineering for new intercity passenger rail corridors as well as enhancements to existing routes.
The SDP scope’s $500,000 investment was fully funded by the program, and the SDP development’s estimated $5.46 million cost will be 90 percent federally funded. The remaining 10 percent is to be provided by PennDOT.
With Pa.’s transportation agency as the lead agency and Amtrak as the proposed operator, the owners of the route — PNRRA, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), New Jersey Transit (NJT), and Amtrak — are all project partners in working to restore passenger service to the corridor.
Beginning in Scranton, the 60mi. segment of the route in Pa. and across the Delaware River is owned by PNRRA and currently used for freight rail service between Scranton and the town of Slateford. One mile of track south
of Slateford Junction was previously removed and will need to be reconstructed.
The Lackawanna Cutoff, a segment of the route between Slateford and Port Morris, N.J., carried its last freight train in 1979 as part of the Conrail network and subsequently had its track removed as well. The portion of this segment in N.J. is owned by NJDOT. Currently, NJT is reconstructing about 7 mi. of track at the east end to extend its commuter service from Port Morris to Andover, N.J. The other 20 mi. from the Delaware River to Andover also will need to be restored, PennDOT noted.
From Port Morris, the route will run over existing NJT commuter lines to Kearny, where the route connects to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor for the last eight mi. into New York Penn Station.
After the SDP is completed and federally approved, the projects identified in the plan will begin preliminary engineering and environmental review in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration.

JCB is celebrating a historic milestone with the production of its millionth backhoe loader.
The first JCB backhoe rolled off the production line in Rocester, Staffordshire, in 1953. Called the Mark One, it brought hydraulic power to construction equipment for the first time.
In the first full year of production in 1954, just 35 of the machines were built, and it took more than 20 years for the first 50,000 to be made. It took 59 years for the first half million JCB backhoes to be manufactured –but less than 13 years for the next half million to be produced, culminating in today’s celebrations.
JCB now manufactures backhoe loaders in the United Kingdom, India and Brazil. Despite the maturity of the versatile backhoe loader, it is still one of the biggest selling pieces of construction machinery, and it remains the world’s fourth-most-popular machine in the construction equipment sales league table, according to JCB.
Hundreds of backhoe loader employees lined the road outside JCB’s world headquarters on Jan. 31, 2025, joining company Chairman Anthony Bamford to watch a cavalcade of 16 backhoes from down the ages. These spanned a 1954 Mark I through to a 2025 3CX model.
Also joining in the celebration today was retired JCB employee Ken Harrison, aged 100, who joined JCB as a welder in 1952 when only 29 people worked on the shop floor. Harrison, one of the last-known survivors of the production team that built the first JCB backhoes, retired 36 years later in 1988.
“I am the only person in the business now who can remember the early days when we first started to make backhoes in what was a former cheese factory in Rocester,” Bamford said. “Looking back at that time, I could never have imagined that we would
make one million of these diggers after such humble beginnings. Looking back is a fun thing to do, but it’s always been JCB’s way to look forward, and I’m looking forward to the production of the next one million backhoes.”
The one millionth JCB backhoe to be produced was a 4CX model, which was decorated in graffiti art by London-based artist and illustrator Dave Smith and presented to Bamford at the Jan. 31 celebrations.
North American audiences were able to share in this production milestone during the ARA Show in Las Vegas. JCB displayed a new 3CX Pro model with special One Millionth livery in booth 3931, highlighting updates to the backhoe line including:
• enhanced roading capabilities: With a six-speed auto-shift transmission and a top speed of almost 30 mph, these machines deliver improved fuel efficiency and reduced travel time, which is crucial for utility repairs and emergency responses.
• updated excavator end design: Featuring a new outer box dipper, this design offers superior weight distribution, making it the optimal solution for thumb mounting. Operators benefit from improved stability and higher lift capacity when handling heavy materials at full reach, ensuring exceptional performance for tasks like material handling and demolition.
• upgraded cab: The redesigned cab features a 7-in. display, Bluetooth connectivity, ergonomic joystick controls and improved visibility through larger mirrors and LED work lights. This ensures that operators stay comfortable and focused throughout their shifts.

Case Construction Equipment’s 580EV, the industry’s first electric backhoe loader in full production, has been awarded a prestigious Good Design Award in the Transportation category.
The 580EV represents a big leap forward in electric construction machinery, combining the robust capabilities of its diesel counterpart with all the environmental and operational benefits of electric vehicle technology.
Zero emissions and minimal noise make the 580EV model an ideal solution for urban construction crews, utility teams, municipal crews and other contractors who want to work more productively while also minimizing carbon footprints, according to the manufacturer.
The Good Design awards, managed by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd, is one of the oldest and most respected awards programs for contemporary design. Each year the program celebrates the most innovative industrial, product and graphic designs produced around the world.
The Case 580EV, which was recognized for exceptional industrial design, seamlessly combines form and functionality to create an unmatched operator experience. Clean, flowing body lines accented with boldly colored “electric blue” decaling help call out the cutting-edge EV technology under the hood. Inside the cab, Case took an operator-first approach with an 8-in. color touch screen display, user-friendly controls and ergonomic membrane keypads protected against dust and other debris. Multicolored, four-corner strobe lights also let operators work safely and meet regulatory requirements, with adjustable colors, strobe patterns and an “always-on” feature for low-light conditions when strobes are not needed.
“We designed this workhorse machine from day one as a purpose-built, high-performing EV, but we also wanted it to have a look and feel that operators would love,” said Terry Dolan, vice president — North America, Case Construction Equipment.
“This recognition from Good Design underscores our continued leadership in design excellence and functional innovation as we work harder than anyone to give contractors more tools in the toolbox for them to succeed on the job site.”

Volvo CE has maintained a healthy profitability on lower volumes for the fourth quarter, following 12 months of declining sales, impacted as it has been by an ongoing weaker market landscape across many regions in the world. But while net sales have dropped 16 percent in Q4, net order intake for the same quarter has risen 19 percent, driven by improvements in major markets across Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania.
And while South America has seen a growth in net sales of 19 percent and deliveries increased 29 percent for the last quarter,
overall global sales are down for the full year by the same Q4 drop of 16 percent. In Q4, net sales decreased by 16 percent to SEK 22,197 M (26,578), of which net sales of machines decreased by 19 percent and service sales decreased by 2 percent. Adjusted operating income amounted to SEK 2,609 M (3,320), corresponding to an adjusted operating income of 11.8 percent (12.5). For the full year 2024, net sales dropped by the same 16 percent, amounting to SEK 88,305 M (104,981). Adjusted operating income amounted to SEK 12,737 M (16,993).
Volvo CE is maintaining a more positive outlook coming into 2025, following a year of milestone investments and pioneering new product launches, continuing with its largest product portfolio overhaul in decades.
Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE, said, “Despite lower volumes, we have been able to maintain a healthy profitability, whilst at the same time introducing new products and services, including a new range of articulated haulers to our existing portfolio.
“As we navigate challenging market conditions, we stand firm in our commitments and continue to invest. This last quarter has seen us move forward with our biggest launch year ever, balancing tomorrow’s innovations with our customers’ needs for today. 2025 will see us continue with these exciting developments, strengthened by an incredible performance from all our employees around the world.”
New excavator models were rolled out, including the EC650 in China and the EC300 in South Korea, while in Europe, the latest generation of excavators was expand-
ed with the launch of three mid-size crawler excavators. In January, a comprehensive range of industry-leading articulated haulers was launched. The updated range consists of seven models from 25 to 60 tons including one completely new model, the A50, offering customers a new size class for unbeatable hauler performance, accessible to customers in global markets over the coming months.
Compared with the historically high levels in Europe and North America for the final quarter of 2023, the total machine market contracted in these regions, largely due to a saturated end customer demand in Europe, resulting in a 25 percent drop, and a normalization of replenished dealer and rental fleets in North America, prompting an 8 percent drop.
However, South America saw a 5 percent increase due mainly to improvements in Brazil, while government policies to stimulate the real estate market were the main driver for market growth in China (6 percent). Asia, excluding China, was flat with lower development in Southeast Asia, South Korea and Turkey, while markets in India and the Middle East grew.

speeding and reckless driving in construction zones,” said Rep. Will Snyder, who co-sponsored the legislation.
He believes the two bills focused on work zone cameras “will protect our essential road workers and drivers alike.”
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer echoed Snyder’s comments: “These bills will make sure that every Michigander is safe on our roads.”
The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) fought for the Michigan laws, Lance Binoniemi, vice president, told Fox17.
“Over the past five to 10 years, we’ve seen a very large uptick in the number of accidents and the number of fatalities within construction zones,” he said. “That prompted our association and its members to look at other states, what they were doing to protect their workers.”
safer roads, safer vehicles, safer speeds and post-crash care.
He said Maryland saw an 85 percent drop in the number of speeders in the first five years of the program.
“There’s virtually no repeat offenders after you get caught once with a written warning,” added Binoniemi.
According to Safety & Health magazine, the bipartisan Michigan legislation allows speed cameras to be positioned in roadway work zones.
Drivers exceeding the speed limit by at least 10 mph in a work zone with workers present will be issued a written warning.
The warning will be issued “using a form that is created by the automated speed enforcement unit,” according to Safety & Health.
Fines for a second speeding violation within three years can reach $150; subsequent violations can go up to $300.
In announcing the legislation in late 2024, Michigan DOT noted that 23 other states currently use camera technology.
Some states have had similar laws dating back to 2020 on the books. Maryland’s Gov. Wes Moore signed legislation last April.
In January 2022, the USDOT released its National Roadway Safety Strategy targeting the number of accidents and deaths on U.S. roadways.
And as the Pavement Network noted, while roadway fatalities had been in decline for 30 years, beginning in 2020, deaths began to increase.
The DOT strategy tackles safer people,
Automated speed enforcement systems are proposed as part of the solution to address safer speeds.
The DOT promotes speed safety cameras “as a proven countermeasure” against speeding, reported the Pavement Network.
Pennsylvania was an early adopter, going back to 2020 when PennDOT used 17 unmanned white Jeep Cherokees with cameras mounted inside. The devices monitored and captured drivers in active work zones. If a driver was 11 mph over the work zone speed limit, the driver was issued a warning.
Second offenses, according to the Pavement Network, garnered a fine of $75 while third offenses carried a $150 penalty.
“After two years, PennDOT feels the program is working to keep construction crews and drivers safe,” said the network.
The agency reported that speeding in 2021 was reduced to 20 percent in all zones, and speeding over 11 mph was reduced to just 3 percent.
PennDOT also said the camera program issued 842,546 speeding violations; 84 percent were issued as warnings for first-time offenders.
“It’s results like this that have brought the use of speed cameras into focus for other DOT programs,” said the Pavement Network.
In 2023, only 13 states at the time allowed the use of cameras to track speeders in active construction zones. It was a fairly new safety application then. Several states debated related legislation, and not all of them liked the idea for various reasons.
More than one state prohibited the use of
While some states don’t want speeding cameras installed, citing privacy issues, others are debating the safety benefits of the devices.
cameras because of the notion of state DOTs and cities profiting from the program. Others were concerned about privacy, according to the Pavement Network article.
But those states that moved forward with program implementation, it said, saw “measurable” drops in work zone speeding, it said.
In its speed safety camera program planning and operations guide, the USDOT said local governments have found safety cameras can reduce fatalities.
“Speed safety cameras (SSCs) … use speed measurement devices to detect vehicles that are exceeding the speed limit,” said the federal agency. “Local governments have found that when used appropriately as part of a broader strategy SSCs can reduce
traffic fatalities.”
Reductions in fatalities are especially critical around schools and constructions zones, said DOT. The SSCs “have been shown to reduce roadway fatalities and injuries by 20 to 37 percent.
Local governments have used cameras to address safety problems where crashes cannot be addressed more effectively with other countermeasures, it said.
It outperforms traditional enforcement, signage, public outreach and speed feedback signage in these situations.
“Additionally, as a traffic safety device, the motivation for SSC programs must be safety for road users using data-driven approaches,” said DOT.
“In order to build public trust, SSC programs should be transparent about the use of revenue from citations,” the agency added.
“Revenue generated from SSCs in some jurisdictions has been put back into safety programs, rather than to finance unrelated expenses for the city or county.”
Citing three success stories, DOT started with Pennsylvania’s program, which allows the use of SSCs in active work zones.
Aspects of the program including how fines are used, are outlined, said DOT. Revenue first goes to running and maintaining the program.
“Any excess revenue goes to the Pennsylvania State Police, PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.”
New York City implemented a school zone SSC program, which expanded a pilot program to include more school zone locations.
Speeding during school hours was reduced by 63 percent and injuries from pedestrian crashes decreased by 17 percent at SSC locations, said DOT.
And, Seattle also first piloted SCCs in school zones using mobile vans in 2009. Following this pilot, the city launched a fixed camera program in 2012. The program began with eight cameras at four schools and expanded in 2014 and 2015.
“SSCs are only authorized in school zones, which have speeds limits set at 20 mph,” reported the DOT.
Indiana DOT implemented a program for camera usage to reduce speeding in work zones this month, reported television station Fox59. Part of the state’s “Safe Zones” program, it puts speed cameras on the interstate

could be welcoming to businesses and residents while at the same time generating tax revenues.
Officials envision Riverfront East transforming into an 86-acre section that will become shops, businesses, restaurants and homes. This transformation could look similar to the area across the Christina River, which is home to Frawley Stadium, banks, residences, restaurants, a movie theater and the Delaware Children’s Museum.
Tony Mottola of the RDC is heading up the multi-million-dollar effort.
“We don’t want this to be just another suburban area, but we want it to function as a part of the city with its energy and choices,” said Mottola. “The return on investment for this type of work can be huge. On the west side of the riverfront, the city invested $32 million in brownfield development with an ROI of $180 million.”
The RDC is working closely with government officials, contractors and the engineering firm of RK & K on the property.
“Our vision is to make the city cleaner, safer and a more attractive place to live,” said Mottola. “We have been given the task to find new and creative ways to make this happen.”
Location matters. The Wilmington Riverfront is just a 10-minute walk from a popular rail center, 20 minutes from Philadelphia’s airport and a twohour train ride from New York City.
The RDC is now taking important early steps for the remediation of the brownfields and demolition of six existing buildings.
“We are working with the state of Delaware and local consultants on the remedial action plan which will include an analysis of the soils,” said Mottola.
“We are also working with the state to cure any problems with the soil and to take care of it in the future. We will be encapsulating the soil so any pollutants will be prevented from affecting future activity.”
Workers also will be building up the property to a 100-year flood level. This standard will require approximately 4 to 5 ft. of fill. The construction team has built a haul road in the middle of the property to keep disturbance in the surrounding area to a minimum. The team also will be constructing a bulkhead to prevent flooding from the nearby waterways. The team estimates it will haul approximately 200,000 cu. yds. of soil to the development. Once deposited, the soil will need to surcharge six to eight months to settle before grading, road building and construction can begin.
The demolition and remediation are in their early stages with workers using articulated trucks, haul trucks, dozers, front loaders and excavators. Later the construction team will employ paving equipment and rollers to achieve proper compaction for the streets in the development.
Developers also must consider utilities. An underground passage has been delivering the utilities to the property since the 1920s and must be updated. Workers also will relocate a 24-in. water main and will route other utilities.
Rather than put dirt and stone on top of the new utility vault, the construction team will be using ultra-lightweight foamed glass aggregates (UL-FGA). The aggregate is produced by a nearby company, Aero Aggregates. The material is made from recycled glass and

Volvo Trucks North America has unveiled significant enhancements to its Blue Service Contract, a dealer-managed preventive maintenance solution designed to maximize fleet uptime and efficiency.
Powered by proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) models, the adaptive maintenance system adjusts service intervals dynamically based on factors such as fuel consumption, idle time and oil samples. This data-driven approach replaces traditional static intervals with customized and optimized schedules, ensuring the right maintenance at the right time. By consolidating services into fewer planned stops, the system maximizes uptime for customers and keeps trucks on the road longer.
The announcement was made at the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) 2024 Management Conference & Exhibition in Nashville, Tenn.
With the highly adaptive Blue Service Contract, customers benefit with service schedule optimization, bundling services into one stop, leading to reduced operating costs. Conversely, if a truck has seen unusually demanding conditions for a prolonged period of time, the adaptive maintenance AI model will recommend service sooner, reducing the likelihood of unplanned downtime.
In both scenarios, uptime is improved, resulting in better economic outcomes for customers. Dealers proactively schedule service visits using connectivity within the Blue Service Contract, allowing customers to focus on business growth while knowing maintenance is being managed efficiently to keep trucks in peak operating condition.
These new features are enabled by Volvo Trucks’ integrated connectivity solutions, which monitor the entire truck that is connected to the 24/7 Volvo Trucks Uptime
Center. This allows fleet managers and their dealers to monitor and manage trucks in near real-time. The Blue Service Contract leverages this connectivity and ensures that the service bay, technician, and all necessary Volvo genuine parts are on-hand when the truck arrives at the dealership, expediting service and returning the truck to the road quickly.
This service is available throughout Volvo Trucks’ expansive dealer network, regardless of where the truck was purchased.
“There have been substantial improvements in service intervals in our products over the years. We find that many fleets are
over-maintaining their trucks, which can be costly. Applying AI to optimize maintenance intervals based on truck specs, operating conditions and actual use ensures our customers can maximize the uptime of their Volvo trucks,” said Magnus Gustafson, vice president connected services, Volvo Trucks North America.
“The Blue Service Contract leverages the integrated connectivity of our trucks and incorporates our uptime services to provide customers with a simplified and more effective maintenance solution. This connectivity is a defining feature of Volvo trucks, including on the all-new VNL, the most connected
truck ever built.”
In addition to adaptive maintenance, the Blue Service Contract now offers increased flexibility, allowing customers to choose specific services covered under their contract. New contract service options include fuel filters, valve adjustments, pickup and delivery, truck washes, DOT inspections, additional chassis lubes, and other add-on services, providing a white glove experience for drivers and fleets. These services can be customized for individual trucks, enabling operators to create a tailored fleet management strategy that makes their job simpler and hassle-free.
The Blue Service Contract can be paid via ACH, FleetPreferred or as part of truck financing through Volvo Financial Services in fixed monthly payments with no interest expense. Equip Exposition photo
With more than 1.2 million sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor exhibit space, Equip Exposition is a “must see” for dozens of reasons, including the 30-acre Outdoor Demo Yard.
This October, Equip Exposition, the international landscape, outdoor living and equipment exposition, will unveil several new features for the award-winning trade show, including new equipment categories, top-notch entertainment and more.
From Oct. 21 to 24, 2025, thousands of landscapers, dealers, contractors, hardscape experts and outdoor power equipment manufacturers will gather at the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC) in Louisville for the largest event of their industry.
“We are always aiming to improve what we can offer attendees, and the excitement around the 2025 show is already high. We’re well ahead in exhibitor space reservations this year over 2024,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of power equipment, small engines, battery power systems, portable generators, utility and personal transport vehicles, and golf cars, which owns and manages the blockbuster show.
With more than 1.2 million sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor exhibit space, Equip Exposition is a “must see” for dozens of reasons, including the 30-acre Outdoor Demo Yard, unique peer-to-peer networking events, education and technical training offerings both in English and Spanish, high-level speakers and world class entertainment.
But Kiser said landscapers, contractors, industry insiders and power equipment dealers should put Equip Exposition on their calendars early this year because several must-see events and offerings will be on hand, including:
• A special keynote speaker, Jesse Cole, founder of the wildly-popular baseball team, the Savannah Bananas, who will inspire attendees to grow their own businesses to
new heights. As one of America’s most famous entrepreneurs, Cole will share what it takes to develop a great idea into a brand that people embrace and love, and how to keep creativity flowing for the long haul.
• Created just for Equip Exposition, an exclusive small batch Bourbon will be made by a Kentucky master distiller. For help in naming the bourbon, Equip welcomes input from attendees and exhibitors though a special naming contest.
• Boom trucks, lifts and other large vehicles will be available in an outdoor KEC parking lot as well as indoors on the KEC’s Freedom Hall floor.
• A newly-expanded and re-located UTV Test Track will move this year to a larger area. The relocation frees up additional space in the 30-acre Outdoor Demo Yard, where attendees will test equipment, drive, cut, chop, dig, trench and do more in the re-configured space.
• Top-notch entertainers Big & Rich and solo country artist Gretchen Wilson will perform an exclusive concert for show attendees at the Kentucky International Convention Center (KICC) in downtown Louisville on Thursday evening of the show. The concert, included with admission to Equip Exposition, is a great place to network and provides a load of fun.
Since assuming management of the business-to-business trade show in 2022, OPEI has worked to energize Equip Exposition’s offerings. The show broke attendance records in 2022 with 25,000 attendees, in 2023 with 27,000, and again in 2024 with 28,500.
Registration is only $25 through May 31, 2025. The blockbuster trade show brings more than $25 million annually to Louisville.

Some states have had camera programs in place for years, seeing significant
in traffic accidents and fatalities, involving both construction workers and drivers.

where crews are working. The agency reported a 70 percent reduction in speeding after the installation of cameras along one I70 work zone.
Now, drivers see signs saying “Speed limit, photo enforced” while passing through the construction zone.
For the most part drivers are taking it in stride. “I personally don’t have an issue with it because it’s about safety,” T.J. Davis told Fox59. “Everybody deserves to make it home to their family or to make it to their work safely. Safety is first for me, personally.”
New Mexico legislators, just beginning the discussion, introduced a bill to place speed cameras in construction zones across the state.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the bill would authorize NMDOT to place cameras in construction zones.
Over the past five years, New Mexico State Police issued more than 13,000 citations in construction zones.
“Automated speed enforcement cameras work,” said Ricky Serna, state transportation cabinet secretary. “They’re proven to work. They’ve been proven to reduce speeding by 50 to 60 percent and cut crashes by up to 30 percent in other states.”
The New Mexico proposal calls for a $50 fine for going 5 to 10 mph over the speed limit, $100 for going 11 to 15 miles over and $200 for anything above.
The state police will issue the citations, said Serna. The DOT will use the revenue to pay for the program and promote work-zone safety awareness.
Washington state gave notice that speed cameras are on the way to freeway work zones. The WSDOT was set to debut mobile devices to improve safety.
The state legislature passed a bill in 2023 to allow speed enforcement cameras in active work zones, reported news radio station KIRO. The station said Mark Ottele, senior project manager of Granite Construction, testified in favor of the bill.
“I wonder if people would slow down if they knew it was their daughter, son, grandfather, mother and uncle who was in those work zones,” he said.
“The program is intended to be a tool to enhance and complement existing state enforcement efforts,” Travis Snell, WSDOT legislative liaison, testified.
It’s also meant “to change driver behavior, reduce overall speed and increase safety for our highway workers and driving public,” he said.
Six mobile enforcement cameras are expected to be active in Washington work zones by the summer.
According to KIRO, the cameras are mounted on a small trailer and can be deployed at any work zone.
“Where they are active, WSDOT must post signs warning that camera enforcement is ahead and what the speed limit is,” the radio station said. CEG

To provide more options for customers, the new R 934 weighs approximately 78,500 lbs. and is positioned between two existing models, the R 930 and the R 945. The R 945 is a new option for the 90,000 lbs. class range. In addition to improved engine power, the Generation 8 crawler excavators are equipped with a boom concept with a modified head, providing operators with an optimized load curve leading to better fuel savings on site.
Liebherr has been designing and manufacturing machines for material handling for more than 60 years. With the different versions of the LH 22 Industry machine model of the generation of Liebherr handlers, high performance and yet economical machines specially designed for use in demolition applications. The optimized design of the 141 HP engine supplies a high torque output for fast and strong movements. Load peaks are compensated for to ensure that maximum torque is available at all times for highest handling capacity, according to Liebherr.

Workers will be building up the property to a 100-year flood level. This standard will require approximately 4 to 5 ft. of fill.
RIVERFRONT from page 30
weighs 85 percent less than traditional aggregates.
The construction team will keep recycling in mind for other work, as well. Wherever possible the team will use material from demolished buildings and other structures as fill for future work on the property.
The progress at Wilmington Riverfront is being funded through the Delaware Department of Transportation, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, federal grants and money from the RDC. Most of the land has been purchased that will be needed for the project’s 86 acres. The development will include 13 acres of greenspace.
RDC planners are focused not just on buildings, but also on people. The Salvation Army building was located on the property and has been caring for the poor and homeless since 1986. The old building was demolished, and a new, larger facility was built. It opened in 2022 approximately a mile away at 610 S. Walnut St.
“It’s a beautiful location, across from the river where it’s a more accessible to foot traffic, as well as bus lines,” said Major Morris McCullough, administrator of the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center. “The new center is some 40,000 square feet for the residents. We host about 65 residents.”
Tony Mottola has been a property manager for more than 25 years before taking on the work at RDC. He also is a horticulturist, so he takes special delight in seeing neglected land cleaned and new growth appear. He sees the Wilmington Riverfront as an example of what can happen when government, nonprofits and industry work together to create a new future.

In honor of its 100 Year Anniversary, Caterpillar Inc. announced Cat Limited Edition machines are available for purchase through select Cat dealers around the world.
Along with the latest machine technologies that Cat customers have come to expect, the Limited Edition models feature a custom “Centennial Grey” paint scheme to recognize the original color of Caterpillar’s first products.
“We could not have reached this historic milestone without our customers and dealers,” said Tony Fassino, Caterpillar Construction Industries group president. “Since 1925, our customers have used our products and services to help improve the quality of people’s lives throughout the world. The Limited Edition machines allow our customers to celebrate Caterpillar’s heritage while focusing on the work ahead.”
The models also will include special markings denoting 100 Years and a commemorative interior plate. The models are available in North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
“Few companies are fortunate enough to make it to this point, and we know how we got here,” said Fassino. “It’s because of our history of innovation and the exceptional collaborations we’ve had with our dealers and customers over the past 10 decades.”
Contact your local Cat dealer to determine availability. Models may include:
• compact, small and medium wheel loaders
• backhoe loaders
• skid steer loaders
• compact track loaders
• small and medium track type tractors
• mini, small, medium and large excavators
• motor graders
The Cat Limited Edition machines will be displayed at select Centennial celebrations and trade shows.
