Easing On Down the Highway Trailer Telematics Produce Key Performance Indicators By Lucy Perry
Data-driven decisions are key to the success of any contractor’s business. When it comes to heavy transport, the metrics you value indicate more than just a successful delivery. Analyzing the right data can help you fine-tune your operations for efficient transport management. Deciding which key performance indicators (KPI) to focus on can be tricky, but it comes down to how you want to run your transport business. “The global trucking industry runs on fuel, but it relies on data,” said asset tracking system provider Orbcomm. Construction Set for $37M Wildlife Crossing in Wyoming A $37 million wildlife crossing project designed to protect drivers and two mule deer herds is likely to begin construction in 2025, the Cowboy State Daily reported, citing Wyoming wildlife and transportation officials. Along a 30-mi. stretch of highway between Evanston and Kemmerer, the Kemmerer Wildlife Crossing project on U.S. Highway 189 in southwest Wyoming will add five underpasses, one overpass and fencing improvements. Those features will protect prized Wyoming Range mule deer, Wyoming Game and Fish officials said. Wyoming Department of Transportation spokeswoman Stephanie Harsha said the project will be put out to bid in May with construction likely starting a few months afterward, the Cowboy State Daily reported. The project, which will take about two years to complete, is being funded with a $24.3 million federal Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program discretionary grant. The stretch of U.S. 189 has been described as a wildlife slaughterhouse for wildlife, the Cowboy State Daily said. “It can be kind of a messy death zone,” former Game and
Part of the Dry Piney Connectivity Project, consisting of 33.4 mi. of 8-ft.-tall deer fence and nine underpasses.
The crossing is being built in an area that is part of the deer’s migration pattern — and has been the scene of several car and deer collisions, the Cowboy State Daily reported. State Game and Fish officials say about 80 deer-vehicle collisions are reported in the area annually but believe the figures are underreported. wildlife quickly learn to use the crossings. “In the places they get established, they almost eliminate [mule deer] highway mortalities,” Foster told the Cowboy State Daily. “If you just have a big enough view of the other side, then they’ll utilize it pretty quick. Because of the high fencing [along the highway], they’ll be searching for a way to cross. “If they feel comfortable with the space underneath, then they’ll go ahead and go through it.” The Federal Highway Administration is paying more than 20 percent of the project, with $4.2 million coming from WYDOT. The Wyoming Transportation Commission, Game and Fish Commission, Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resource Trust and other nonprofits and private partners added $8.8 million. Existing wildlife crossing improvements along U.S. 189 include the Trapper’s Point crossing and the recently completed Dry Piney Connectivity Project, with 33.4 mi. of 8-ft.tall deer fence and nine underpasses, Harsha said. Sherwood Construction Begins Oklahoma Interchange Project A more than $42 million interchange improvement project at Interstate 44 and State Highway 66 in Catoosa, Okla., began on Dec. 2, 2024. The Oklahoma Transportation Commission awarded the project to Sherwood Construction in August 2024. Completion is expected in summer 2026 during the Route 66 Centennial. The project will add lanes and straighten the curve on westbound I-44 between the
U.S. 412/Will Rogers/Creek Turnpike interchange and State Highway-167/193rd East Avenue, as well as relocate the existing eastbound I-44 exit to SH 66 to a more standard right-hand exit with a new flyover ramp. This flyover also will give 193rd E. Avenue traffic direct access to SH 66. A protected turnaround at 193rd E. Avenue also will allow SH 66 traffic to access eastbound I-44 and eastbound U.S.-412. Drivers began seeing lane closures on east
and westbound I-44, SH 66 and the I-44/Will Rogers Turnpike ramp to westbound I-44 during the week of Dec. 2. Lanes also will be narrowed in width. Two lanes of traffic on I44 will be maintained in both directions at peak travel times. Drivers are urged to use extra caution in the work zone. Recently, Sherwood Construction completed the Turner Turnpike I-44/ SH 66 Interchange Modification, a $35 million project at the eastern end of the Turner Turnpike
in southwest Tulsa at what was formerly called the “Tulsa Gate.” The work involved eliminating the left lane exit from WB I-44 to SH 66, widening I-44 to six lanes and creating a two-lane, right-side exit for WB SH-66 including a new bridge taking those lanes over the turnpike. Other work included a quarter-mile-long extension of Skelly Drive to South 63rd West Avenue and a new street connection to SH 66 to improve safety at the interchange.

Downtown the Focus...
NDOT Awards $54M Contract for U.S. 50 Renovation in Ely The Nevada State Board of Transportation in December 2024 approved a $54 million contract to Road and Highway Builders of Reno for a multi-year Nevada Department of Transportation project to transform and reconstruct U.S. 50 (East Aultman Street) through downtown Ely. The project will reconstruct and improve the highway, which was last fully repaved 30 years ago, with lighter resurfacing 13 years ago. NDOT secured a $24 million federal RAISE grant to support project construction. Project construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2025 and continue through 2026. NDOT will work to maintain access to all businesses during construction. NDOT, Road and Highway Builders and business groups will partner to keep the community updated on construction and construction traffic changes. Beginning by early spring 2025, community members can anticipate intermittent lane closures and up to 30-minute travel delays, as well as brief intersection closures on U.S. 50 (Aultman Street), as the following improvements are made between First Street and Bell Avenue and 10th through 15th streets through downtown Ely: Reconstruct and resurface aging roadway. Nearly 15 in. of aging roadway surface and base will be pulverized and blended with new cement to create a sturdier and more durable roadway base. Six in. of new asphalt will then be placed over the new roadway base for a smoother and safer roadway surface.
From 10th Street to 15th Street: Roadway surface improvements, along with reconstruction of curb, gutter, sidewalk, pedestrian ramps and driveways along this portion of the project. Lane configuration will remain the same with two lanes in each direction. Drainage, sewer and water improvements will tie into the nearly 2,300 ft. of drainage pipe and channels installed during the first phase of the project, resulting in an improved drainage network to reduce flooding concerns. Electronic flashing pedestrian crossing signs, known as rapid rectangular flashing beacons, will be installed, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic as they cross the street. These crossings will be at Fifth Street, Ninth Street, East 11th Street and 15th Street. Upgraded LED roadway lighting will be installed. Underground conduit line also will be enhanced for better connectivity to roadway cameras, road/weather information systems and more. This also provides the opportunity for early installation of future electrical and communications including fiber optic cables, as part of a broader plan to make high-speed internet more accessible throughout Nevada. Accessibility improvements will be made to sidewalk ramps. In addition, there will be complete street renovation from First Street to Bell Avenue: Between First Street and Bell Avenue, U.S. 50 will be transformed into a “complete streets” design, with one lane in each direction and a two-way left turn lane in the middle.
The transformation will help provide safe, comfortable and convenient downtown access for all. A report by Smart Growth America shows that “complete streets” can not only reduce crashes and injuries but can boost employment, economic development, and more. The Federal Highway Administration notes that such transformations can be especially important for rural main streets, where through travel and local access can create traffic safety challenges. Bicycle lanes and widened and accessible sidewalks will improve mobility for all, particularly with Ely at the crossroads of major statewide bicycle corridors. Additional, designated on-street parking will enhance ease of business access. Electronic flashing pedestrian crossing signs will be installed at Fifth and Ninth streets, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic as they cross the street. Upgraded, decorative LED roadway lighting, trees and other aesthetic improvements such as welcome signs will create a signature downtown environment. The three welcome signs, decorative pavement, street trees and tile medallions set into the sidewalk representing the cultural heritage of Ely will create a signature main street environment. The project marks phase two of the Ely Downtown Reconstruction Project. Completed in 2021, the first phase of the project improved the highway and drainage on U.S. 50/East Aultman Street between Bell Avenue and East 10th Street.

Hiring Construction Workers Starts With Right Candidates Hiring and retaining good construction employees, and finding skilled, reliable workers is an important focus point, but also a real challenge for employers. Turnover rates remain high, job seekers have increased expectations, labor shortages persist and the employers feel the pressure to meet project deadlines with a weakened workforce. Organizational development veteran Larry Kokkelenberg has more than 40 years of experience coordinating workforce efforts with employers. He trained more than 200,000 leaders, authored two books and has witnessed firsthand the costly consequences of hiring mistakes. During ConExpoCon/AGG 2023, he shared valuable insights and strategies to attract top talent and build a resilient workforce. Those insights are available in a free downloadable e-book from ConExpo-Con/AGG. Cost of Wrong Hire Recruiting the wrong person for a skilled construction role can bring long-term challenges, including high turnover, increased training costs and project delays. According to Kokkelenberg, effective hiring starts with identifying the traits and habits of successful employees to create a framework for interviewing and selecting ideal candidates. This backward approach to recruitment, outlined in the free online ebook, Hiring and Retaining Good Employees, helps companies attract individuals with the right technical skills, safety competencies and a mindset for teamwork. When companies hire the right people, they not only reduce turnover, but also foster programs where existing employees recommend candidates from their networks. “When employees communicate to their friends and family about good pay, great management and growth opportunities, they help develop referral programs,” said Kokkelenberg. “This method of getting the word out to local candidates is particularly useful and fills open employment opportunities with quality candidates.” Leveraging Outreach, Training Kokkelenberg stressed the importance of proactive outreach to find qualified talent. Initiatives such as summer internships, partnerships with community colleges, soliciting the Department of Labor, and working with the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program for transitioning service members, helps employers build pipelines of skilled workers. Digital platforms, local job fairs and community partnerships also play a role. However, the construction industry saw extraordinary labor shortages throughout 2024. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, in September 2024 the unemployment rate was 3.7 percent, and the construc-
tion industry had 288 thousand open positions. In a recent Workforce Survey Analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), 94 percent of respondents reported having openings for skilled labor positions in the construction industry, a 9 percent increase from 2023. “It’s hard to get the exact experience you want today,” Kokkelenberg said. “More organizations will need to invest in training, once they hire the right person.” Further, the AGC survey noted that 42 percent of respondents increased spending on training and development. While 61 percent reported increased pay rates for hourly skilled labor, just within the last year. These workforce strategies developed while 62 percent reported that available labor is simply not qualified to fill skilled roles in the competitive construction industry. Employee Retention Starts With Employer Accountability Once the right people are hired, retention becomes a shared responsibility. Kokkelenberg argued that salaries, work-life balance, job security and leadership opportunities are critical to keeping employees engaged.
“If employees see no growth opportunities or feel undervalued, they’ll look elsewhere,” he said. Retention also requires investment in training that goes beyond basic requirements. Employees who feel valued and see that their employer is invested in their development are more likely to stay. “Training should show employees they are part of the company’s future,” Kokkelenberg added. “It’s not just about compliance; it’s about demonstrating their worth.” Continuous Recruitment: Strategy for Stability Even with positions filled, Kokkelenberg advised companies to maintain an ongoing recruitment strategy to prepare for unexpected turnover. “You are hiring and looking for good people all year long,” he said. “Even when all your crews are together, you’re still looking for good people.” Employers must also address internal factors, such as pay scales, work environments and opportunities for advancement, to minimize turnover and build a stable workforce. The construction industry’s labor short-
ages remain a pressing issue, but as outlined in “4 Steps To Hiring and Retaining Good Employees”, the right strategies can make all the difference. From effective interviewing practices to strong onboarding programs, employers can create a workforce that not only meets today’s demands but drives longterm success. About Larry Kokkelenberg Kokkelenberg holds a doctorate with dual specializations in clinical and industrial psychology. He brings a multifaceted background as a successful entrepreneur, having founded and led several companies, including an asphalt paving firm. In addition, he has extensive experience as an organizational consultant, working across both private and federal sectors, including serving on a White House council. He also is a published author, contributing to the field of organizational development with two notable books. OD for the Accidental Practitioner, provides guidance for individuals who find themselves unexpectedly navigating the field, while its companion volume, OD for the Intentional Practitioner, offers a strategic approach for those pursuing organizational development as a deliberate career path.

The new hospital is being created to focus on having essential medical services close to home for more than 22,000 residents in the Riverton region. “This hospital represents our community’s resilience and determination to bring back local health care,” said Corte McGuffey, chair of the Riverton Medical District board of directors. “It’s been both a marathon and a sprint, and achieving this milestone is a testament to the dedication of our neighbors and supporters.” The new two-story, 71,000-sq.-ft. hospital will be in Riverton’s Eastern Shoshone Business Park. The hospital and clinic will provide a wide range of health-care services to serve local needs, including: • 13 inpatient beds, including labor and delivery and intensive care services • Two surgical suites
• Emergency department featuring a trauma bay and helicopter pad • Radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services • An outpatient clinic for primary and specialty care Once fully operational, it will offer highquality primary, acute, emergency and specialty care services such as trauma, orthopedics and 24/7 surgery availability. The new, combined hospital and clinic are scheduled for completion in late 2026 and will employ an estimated staff of 140. An
additional 90 jobs will be created during construction. Funding for the project includes: • $37.1 million Community Facilities loan from USDA Rural Development. • $1 million Community Facilities Emergency Rural Health Care Grant from USDA Rural Development. • $15 million in federal grant funding facilitated by the state of Wyoming Additional support and contributions from the city of Riverton, Fremont County, the Eastern Shoshone Tribe, USDA and

private donors, totaling more than $14 million. Riverton Medical District has an affiliation in place with Montana-based Billings Clinic, providing access to resources and expertise while maintaining local ownership and governance. For the past several years, Billings Clinic has supported the hospital’s planning and development efforts based on the long history of experience they have working with hospitals across Montana and northern Wyoming. “This hospital is more than a construction project — it’s a symbol of the power of community-driven progress,” VHI Vice President Brandon Wilkins said. “Our team is honored to partner with Riverton Medical District to bring vital health-care access to this region. We understand the unique challenges of building in rural communities, and we’re committed to delivering a facility that will serve Riverton’s residents for generations to come.” A groundbreaking ceremony for the hospital is scheduled for spring 2025. RDO Announces ISO 45001:2018 Certifications for 44 Locations RDO photo
RDO Equipment Co. President Chris Cooper announced to the organization that 44 RDO locations achieved ISO 45001:2018 certification, the world’s leading occupational health and safety systems. “This is us truly walking the walk when it comes to our commitment to working safely,” Cooper said. “RDO’s solid foundation with existing protocols and procedures set teams up for success to further strengthen their safety culture, keeping every team member safe by choice, not by chance.” All RDO stores selling construction equipment, except those in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming, have received their official ISO 45001:2018 certification from DEKRA. These RDO locations were selected for the latest round of a multisite ISO 45001:2018 including 43 equipment stores and service shops and RDO’s Field Support Office (FSO). “RDO as a whole made this commitment. We worked together to increase our team members’ safety awareness and our collective ability to discuss improving safety initiatives,” said Greg Erickson, RDO’s environmental health and safety manager. The first milestone in this nearly two-year process occurred when the RDO store in Dayton, Minn., and the FSO in Fargo, N.D., achieved ISO 45001:2018 certifications during the summer of
2023. RDO’s Safety and Risk Management team has spearheaded RDO’s multi-site certifications, closely working with the Internal Audit team to conduct on-site documentation processes and update daily safety procedures. For the latest multisite certification, all 44 RDO locations earned their ISO 45001:2018 through their work with RDO’s Safety and Risk Management team. As a part of the process, eight RDO locations also passed on-site audits conducted by DEKRA, a third-party certifying body. These locations included Pflugerville and Waco, Texas; Marshall and Sauk Rapids, Minn.; Aberdeen, S.D.; and Fargo and Williston, N.D. “We all understand that this certification isn’t a finish line or a report card, it’s about promoting a safe culture for all team members “ said Troy Young, general manager of the store in Pflugerville. “Now that we’ve received the certification, we’re not letting off the gas pedal. We continue to work together to keep every team member safe.” RDO safety and store leaders continue to develop safety frameworks and evaluations; they expect additional service, sales and parts teams to participate in future ISO 45001:2018 certification efforts. All RDO stores operate under the same ISO 45001:2018 occupational health and safety management system standard.

Monitoring KPIs Prove Invaluable to Track All Operations TELEMATICS from page 1
Fleet managers use truck sensor data to drive revenue, boost productivity, minimize costs, increase retention and more, the company blogged. However, data points that are often overlooked — and can provide great value — are those generated by trailers. “Once dismissed as nothing more than ‘dumb’ containers, trailers are proving to be an asset that can do far more than just move cargo,” said Orbcomm. In fact, driven by new capabilities, trailer telematics has grown from providing rough location estimates and other basic data to delivering myriad information. Live pinpoint asset tracking, real-time capacity, mileage data, detention monitoring, tire pressure, cargo and door status are a start. Investing in and combining trailer telematics with truck data, fleet managers can create KPIs that can measure performance and growth from nose to tail. Further, they can analyze performance data within specific areas of interest such as maintenance, cargo security, productivity and use, said Orbcomm. These insights will “bring fuller visibility and accountability to fleet management,” said the company. “They’ll also help fleet managers make data-informed business decisions and address top concerns specific to their fleet.” Those concerns could be anything from CSA violations and vehicle uptime to driver satisfaction and maintenance costs, said the company. Transporting goods is more than moving from Point A to B, said TransVirtual. A key factor is monitoring your KPIs. KPIs “help you track various angles of your operations,” wrote Jill Quijano, marketing of the logistics software provider. Which KPIs are most critical to your operations? Once you determine what you should be monitoring daily, you’ll have the answer. “In transport operations, KPIs are commonly used to track progress by quantifying efficiency and performance,” said Quijano. “They’re also a great strategy for identifying where the problem lies and what other departments are impacted by it.” Are you seeing a high number of failed deliveries over a period? Find the root cause before it impacts other operations, she said. “Monitoring transport KPIs manually can be time-consuming and prone to errors” from collating data from multiple sources, leading to discrepancies. Plus, Quijano points out, manual tracking lacks real-time insights, making it a challenge to identify trends or anomalies. To effectively track KPIs you need to align them to your business goals and customer needs and review and update them regularly. Finally, said Quijano, you need to automate your tracking function with a transport

Key performance indicators take trailer telematics to a new level by helping transport contractors monitor the factors that have the greatest impact on hauling operations.
management system (TMS). “A TMS simplifies KPI monitoring by consolidating data from various sources and consolidating them in one place,” she said. “Moreover, you get real-time visibility of shipments, deliveries, delays and incidents in easy-to-read formats and reports.” A TMS also allows you to compare KPIs across different areas in the business and alerts you to any issues. Where, How to Start Analysis Regardless of whether you monitor operations manually or with a management program, here are Quijano’s pick of seven KPIs to start with: 1. Must-Arrive-By-Date or On-Time Deliveries On-time deliveries or must-arrive-bydates is a metric that assesses if your busi-
ness is meeting its promised delivery times. “If you want a more detailed look at why deliveries are late, break down the KPI into different metrics,” said Quijano. Those include: • Time in fulfilment: This covers the entire order fulfilment process; from the moment an order is placed to shipping. • Delivery time variance: The difference between the actual delivery time and the scheduled delivery time of each shipment. • Truck turning rate: The time spent on site for each delivery. • Route efficiency: This measures the effectiveness of transport routes in terms of minimizing distance, time and costs. • Diving into these numbers helps you reduce lead times and meet promised shipping dates to boost customer satisfaction and loyalty. “Companies in highly competitive indus-
tries should strive for a 99 percent to 100 percent on-time delivery rate,” she said. But in general, a rate of 95 percent and above indicates that a business delivers its goods within an acceptable time frame. “At the end of the day, set a benchmark that matches your operational capabilities, industry standards, and customer expectations,” added Quijano. 2. Delivery in Full, On Time (DIFOT) As the name suggests, DIFOT measures how many orders were delivered on time, in totality, and with exactly what was ordered. “It’s a KPI commonly used for measuring delivery efficiency,” said Quijano. “However, it’s common for teams to apply it throughout the supply chain too.” DIFOT scores vary per sector or industry, she said, but your business would want to strive for 95 percent and higher. 3. On-Time Pickup On-time pickup covers the portion of pickups completed within a set time window, showing carrier efficiency and operations and customer service impacts. “According to the Supply Chain Consortium, the average on-time pickup is 96 percent across several sectors, a feasible industry standard,” said Quijano. 4. Transportation Costs “Like any business, your goal is to remain efficient while keeping costs down,” she said. “It’s essential you determine the total costs borne from transporting goods.” These costs, which include operating costs, maintenance charges and fixed costs, should be measured alongside your monthly gross income. “Not only does it help with calculating your profit margins, it’s also helpful when see TELEMATICS page 72

I-35 Project Involves Six Phases Running Through 2033 EXPRESS from page 1
Improvements include removing the existing I-35 decks, lowering the roadway and adding two non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle-managed lanes in each direction along I-35 from U.S. 290 East to SH 71. The project also will reconstruct east-west cross-street bridges, add pedestrian and bicycle paths, and make additional safety and mobility improvements within the project limits. The initiative has the goal of improving, according to the TxDOT project page, “this critical regional, national and international thoroughfare by enhancing safety, managing congestion, improving operations, and creating a more dependable and consistent route for the traveling public, including bicyclists and pedestrians, emergency responders and transit.” This project is divided into six phases. The Martin Luther King Bridge will be delivered in 2026 by Harper Brothers Construction LLC, and the Lady Bird Lake (Holly Street to U.S. 290/SH 71 is expected to begin in mid-2025 and be finished in 2031 by Balfour Beatty. The drainage tunnel under I-35 and Cesar Chavez Street will start next year and be completed by 2028, while the CapMetro/Red Line Bridges (Airport and 4th Street) will start in 2026 and be completed in 2029. The final phases begin in 2027 — the Downtown section (MLK Boulevard to Holly Street) will be completed in 2033 and the University section (U.S. 290 East to MLK Boulevard) will be done in 2032. In addition, the project is lowering sections of managed and main lanes through portions of the impacted area. That includes removing the upper decks on I-35 (between Airport Boulevard and MLK Boulevard); lowering I-35 through downtown (between MLK Boulevard and Holly Street); and reconstructing the bridge across Lady Bird Lake. Project planning dates to the 1980s on the impacted stretch of I-35, which handles roughly 200,000 vehicles daily. The environmental study and schematic design were completed between 2020 and 2023, and final design and procurement finished between 2023 and 2024. The project was designed by AECOM, HDR, HNTB, Jacobs, Volkert Inc. and WSP. “One of the major design challenges of the Central project was the constrained corridor of downtown Austin,” said Jeff Barker, a TxDOT public information officer. “TxDOT
A rendering of the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge.
designed and revised schematics to limit right-of-way impacts and reduce those that were initially proposed. To overcome such a challenge, TxDOT designers found ways to use vertical space under frontage roads and avoid extensive acquisition. “As the team began planning for construction, the challenge shifted to how crews could maintain traffic levels and access during construction,” he added. ‘The Central corridor serves multiple means of transportation, including vehicles, buses, trains, bicycles and pedestrians.” Barker added that infrastructure lifespans vary based on multiple factors, including usage, weather and damage. Barker said that TxDOT has worked closely with both the city of Austin and the University of Texas (UT) on the conceptual design of deck caps and stitches along the project corridor, with the city and UT funding operations and maintenance of these enhancements throughout the project’s life. TxDOT will be responsible for building the infrastructure and implementing fire suppression requirements during construction. As for cycling and pedestrian improvements, the plan is to build more than 19 mi. of new shared-use paths, create vehicle bypass lanes to reduce through traffic at 28 intersections, establish 13 connections to the urban trail and bicycle networks, widen and enhance existing east-west crossings, and construct new bicycle-pedestrian crossings at Fourth Street, 51st Street, Red Line at Airport Boulevard, Lady Bird Lake, Third Street, 15th Street and 41st Street. Pavement designs for the new feature are “under development with both concrete and asphalt options being evaluated.” This project is in its early stages. “The early work has been related to utility relocation, retaining wall work, as well as curb work at the southwest corner of MLK Boulevard and along the southbound frontage road,” Barker said. “The most significant work will begin in early 2025, beginning with the closure and reconstruction of the north side of the bridge.” To prepare the construction site, TxDOT began the acquisition and demolition process early to ensure that all properties were cleared before general contractor crews arrived. At 3807 N. Interstate 35 (formally Gulf Gas), 3735 N. Interstate 35 (formally Chevron), 3828 N. Interstate 35 (formally Shell) and 3810 N. Interstate 35 (formally Dura Tune Inc.), petroleum storage tanks were removed last November.
Soils are being tested for contamination. The underground infrastructure will include a drainage tunnel installation. “The drainage tunnel and pump station segment will enhance water treatment in Austin,” according to the TxDOT project web page. “This segment will collect, move and treat water to accommodate the lowered I-35 main lanes, while benefiting the greater community.” To build the concrete tunnel, a tunnel boring machine will cut through rock. Drop shafts will be constructed along I-35 during the construction of the tunnel segment to provide locations for dirt and debris to be removed and provide a point for maintenance access post-construction. The drop shafts will likely be built with jackhammers and excavators. The University segment is between U.S. 290 East and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. It will add two high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) managed lanes in both directions along I-35. In addition, the project will reconstruct east-west crossings (bridges) at: Manor Road, Dean Keeton Street, 32nd Street, 38½ Street and Wilshire Boulevard, and reconstruct the Airport Boulevard intersection and add a pedestrian-only bridge at Capital Plaza. “The removal of the upper decks is anticipated to begin in 2027 and is expected to be complete by 2032,” according to the project page. As operations progress, the number of Harper Brothers and subcontractor personnel will increase. The general contractor has hired many local and regional subcontracting firms. And as work ramps up, so will the amount of materials delivered to the various sites. Demolition and excavation operations will generate large amounts of concrete, asphalt and rebar, as well as pipes for underground infrastructure. Recycling material is an important aspect. “Once excavated from the project site, TxDOT works with the community to identify locations that the dirt can be repurposed for development and/or environmentally approved green fields,” the project web page said. Standard equipment such as cranes, excavators, dozers, loaders, motor graders and manlifts will be on-site. Harper Brothers mechanics will take care of routine equipment maintenance. The company buys and rents equipment from a variety of dealers. CEG (All photos courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation.)

Contractor Employs Cold Recycling Train With Vögele SUPER 2100-5i Paver
ARNOLD MACHINERY COMPANY www.arnoldmachinery.com Las Vegas, NV 702-642-9000 Phoenix, AZ 602-414-1900 Tucson, AZ 520-294-7677 Albuquerque, NM 505-895-1565

The Wirtgen W 240 CRi cold recycler transfers the prepared material by conveyor to the Vögele SUPER 2100-5i paver, which paves it immediately.
The project was to renew the agricultural road near the Dutch village of Ferwert quickly and economically using low-emission machinery. The contractors decided to use the in-place cold recycling method, as this prepares the reclaimed material on site immediately and then reuses it for the paving process. They used a tried and tested combination of Wirtgen Group machines: the W 240 CRi cold recycler from Wirtgen and the new SUPER 2100-5i Highway Class paver from Vögele. Saving CO, Money The environmental performance of road construction projects is becoming more and more of a focus. In-place cold recycling has become established as a resource-saving technique which also delivers economic benefits as a result of the time and expense saved. The Dutch companies KWS and Freesmij opted for this rehabilitation method on the 0.8 mi. long and 10.2 ft. wide asphalt road near the village of Ferwert. The paving crew used the Wirtgen Group cold recycling train to mill off the existing asphalt layer and also to prepare the material on site (also called “in situ” or “in-place”) and make a new base course of bitumenstabilized material (BSM) by mixing in binders and other aggregates. “In-place cold recycling is the response to the ecological and economic demands of modern road construction,” said Raymond van de Stadt, managing director asphalt at primary contractor KWS. “In just two days, we renewed the
entire stretch of road using 100 percent recycled material, thereby significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and, of course, saving time and costs compared to conventional methods.” Powerful Cold Recycling Another benefit of cold recycling was key in this application on a narrow agricultural road: the entire recycling train takes up the width of just one lane. To rehabilitate the 10.2 ft. wide road in one pass, the team first used a W 100 Fi compact milling machine from Wirtgen to pre-mill at a width of 3 ft. and a depth of 5.9 in. This was followed by the cold recycling train, consisting of water and bitumen tank wagons, the Wirtgen W 240 CRi cold recycler and the new SUPER 2100-5i large paver from Vögele. As this process prepares the reclaimed material in situ and uses it for the paving process immediately, both the recycler and the paver had to achieve a high output. The W 240 CRi can produce up to 882 tons of material an hour at a maximum pave width of 7.7 ft., while the SUPER 2100-5i can take up to 22 tons of material with an extra material hopper and pave up to 1,213 tons per hour. Efficient Teamwork On the job site in Ferwert, the cold recycler milled out the old road material to a depth of 5.9 in. in one pass, and in the mixing chamber prepared the material to form homogeneous BSM by adding foamed bitumen using an integrated Vario spray bar. The W 240 CRi then transferred the
material to the following Vögele paver, which paved the 5.9 in. high base course at a speed of around 13.1 ft. per minute. After completion of the recycling work, the SUPER 2100-5i sealed the base course with a 1.6 in. thick asphalt surface course. Machine Technology The contractors relied on environmentally-friendly technologies, both for the machines used and for the rehabilitation process itself. The Vögele large paver of the new “Dash 5” generation features a particularly sustainable drive concept, for example: with a 6cylinder John Deere engine, the SUPER 2100-5i meets European exhaust emissions standard stage 5 and still achieves 178 kW at 1,700 rpm, even in ECO mode. The intelligent engine management system and Vögele EcoPlus optimized low-emissions package also reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 25 percent. The splitter gearbox, the controlled hydraulic oil temperature circuit, the energy-optimized tamper stroke and the speed-controlled fan all contribute to the reduction. Optimized Material Management, High Pre-Compaction Another new feature of the “Dash 5” pavers — the updated material handling control system — also was beneficial in terms of the environmental performance and quality of the construction project. The auger and conveyors now communicate with one other, ensuring see FERWERT page 40

SAKAI America’s New Machines Make Their Debut Earlier in 2024 SAKAI America introduced two groundbreaking machines earlier this year at World of Asphalt 2024. The first production SW884ND 79-in. asphalt roller featuring Guardman safety technology: • Guardman goes beyond basic proximity sensors. Integrated directly into the roller’s hydraulics during production, it detects objects and personnel not just behind the machine, but also in front, automatically slowing or stopping the roller to prevent collisions. • This intelligent system functions in various conditions, including near walls, at night, and even through dust and steam. • Notably, this model boasts both front and rear detection/braking, unlike smaller SAKAI Guardman models that solely rely on rearward monitoring due to their size and improved visibility. A prototype electric walk-behind double drum roller co-developed with Honda: • This innovative roller utilizes Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e system, a removable and swappable lithium-ion battery system. This eliminates “charge anxiety” as batteries can be conveniently swapped on-site and charged during off-hours without needing to move the entire machine. For more information visit www.SakaiAmerica.com. (Photos courtesy of SAKAI.)

that material feed is even more consistent and precisely coordinated. This avoids load peaks, saves fuel, enables an optimum head of mix, and so uninterrupted paving. The new hydraulically extendable limiting plate for the auger tunnel, called the Power Tunnel, additionally ensured an optimum material height in front of the AB 500 TV extending screed used on the job site. Equipped with tamper bar and vibrator compacting systems, the screed also achieves a high degree of pre-compaction. With the hydraulic tamper stroke adjustment, the paving team was able to adjust the tamper stroke at the touch of a button from 0.16 in. to 0.32 in., optimally setting it within seconds for paving the base course and then the surface course. This significantly shortens setup times compared to mechanical adjustment. The simple and accurate adjustment method also ensured optimum pre-com-
paction, good screed floating behavior, and consequently an ideal paving result. Rehabilitation Method With Bright Future After only two days, the entire 0.8 mi. stretch of road was completely rehabilitated. This successful test run convinced the contractors of the economic and environmental benefits of the method. The resource-saving use of material, the high quality of the prepared material, the reduced transportation required and the drop in CO₂ emissions — as well as rehabilitation in one pass — make a significant contribution to greater climate protection and efficiency in road construction. “Cold recycling technology is a model for road rehabilitation which will continue proving its efficiency in the future,” said Freesmij CEO Henk Vreeswijk. Hitachi Construction Machinery Challenge...
Startups to Share Vision of Future of Construction, Mining During Challenge Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas hosted the Hitachi Construction Machinery Challenge on Nov. 20 at its Americas regional headquarters in Newnan, Ga. For the past 70 years, Hitachi Construction Machinery Group has been a leader in developing machinery that is efficient, reliable and innovative. The Hitachi Construction Machinery Challenge is the group’s next step toward becoming a true solutions provider to offer its customers machinery and technological solutions that will optimize and modernize job sites across the globe, the manufacturer said. One hundred and 27 startups from all corners of the world submitted proposals to exhibit their innovative technologies in one of three categories: Transforming Construction Planning; Revolutionize Equipment: Information, Interface & Autonomy; and Transform Fleet Management. These startups were narrowed down to nine finalists (three for each category) who presented their innovations to a panel of judges for a chance to exhibit their technologies at the International Construction Machinery Fair bauma 2025. The day consisted of an opening exhibition time where guests could interact with each startup as well as hear from guest speakers. Each startup then pitched to a panel of judges. The day end with an award ceremony and a networking event. Guest speakers included Edvard Bruun of the Bruun Automation Research LAB at Georgia Institute of Technology, and Shankar Radhakrishnan, the COO of Dimaag-AI. On display during the open exhibition time was an example of Hitachi Construction Machinery’s collaboration with
a startup, the electric excavator developed in partnership with Dimaag-AI. The startups pitching in the Transforming Construction Planning category were ALICE Technologies, Smart PMO and Sodex Innovations GmbH. These three contenders presented technologies that provide actionable data and critical information to assist in decision-making during both the planning and construction phases of a project. Some problems they’ve been challenged to solve are around the optimization of cost, time and CO2 emissions, leveraging ICT machinery, implementing matchmaking solutions and outcome monitoring. For the Revolutionize Equipment: Information, Interface & Autonomy category the contenders were Hive Autonomy, Teleo and iNAGO Corp. They presented innovations that evolve how operators and owners engage with their equipment. The specific challenges they’ve set out to accomplish are enhancing operator information clarity, innovating equipment operation interfaces and adaptive autonomous operation solutions. Survey: Many Businesses Lack Access to Digital Safety Systems Twiceme Technology, a Swedish company dedicated to safety solutions, revealed the findings of its 2024 Construction Safety Survey. In the industrial market survey of 500 construction contractors and 390 safety managers/directors, the data revealed that while 79 percent of safety managers have digital systems to track critical safety information and personal protective equipment (PPE) health, only 40 percent of contractors surveyed noted they have digital access to this information, too. Digital safety technologies have served a vital role in the outdoor sports industry for quite some time, and the construction industry is now beginning to follow suit. Digital technologies embedded within PPE can increase efficiency, decrease deficiencies in information, and empower the wearer and issuer to make the workplace safer by more quickly alerting, locating, and identifying injured persons. It is critical to have information about workplace certifications, PPE equipment health and emergency information about a contractor available at the fingertips of those at a job site. Digital technologies can make an immense difference in response times when an incident occurs. Construction sites can be dangerous, and 69 percent of contractors surveyed noted that they or a coworker had experienced a serious accident at a job site. Of this group, 54 percent said that the first person to respond on site did not have relevant health information about the injured person, which could help accelerate and improve the first-aid process. Also, 45 percent of this group were not adequately trained to provide preliminary help to an injured worker in the moments before first responders were on the scene. “Safety managers are doing a great job with digital safety processes, but there is a critical gap when this information does not reach the workers,” said Christian Connolly, CEO, Twiceme. “Distributing smart PPE can help solve this issue. Investing in PPE like safety helmets and harnesses that have Twiceme-enabled NFC chips embedded within revolutionizes how information is shared and accessed, thus having a positive impact on how management and contractors can respond and act in emergency scenarios.” When safety managers were prompted to rank features of an ideal safety management

system, the large majority marked the following components to be valuable to extremely valuable: • Get alerts for overdue inspections and maintenance tasks for PPE (96 percent). • Get real-time reports on safety compliance issues and incidents (96 percent). • Access to real-time insights into worker attendance and location at job sites (96 percent). • Inspect and receive automatic reminders when workers’ certifications near expiration (91 percent). • Keep track of their workers’ PPE to reduce missing or lost equipment (90 percent). • Access to paperless inspection and filing of required inspections per OSHA guidelines (88 percent). The value of such features is clear: more than 88 percent of survey managers said they would be willing to pay $15 or more for helmets or other PPE gear for their organization if they included a safety management system that tracks work-related documents, equipment expiration dates, emergency response and reporting tools. “As general contractors and other industrial organizations across the U.S. transition from hard hats to safety helmets or plan to invest in other job site PPE, such as fall protection, they should also look at embedded digital technologies as a top priority,” added Connolly. CNH Designs Case Compact Track Loader Inspired By Metallica’s James Hetfield A special edition compact track loader from CNH construction brand Case Construction Equipment was on display at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, Calif., at the Helping Hands charity concert. Held on Dec. 13, this annual event is organized by the rock band Metallica’s All Within My Hands charitable foundation. Following its debut, this customdesigned Case TV450B compact track loader is destined for use at the ranch of Metallica frontman and co-founder James Hetfield. Hetfield commissioned the design as part of an equipment supply agreement with the Case brand. The CNH Design team brought their expertise to the project to develop proposals inspired by Hetfield’s career and persona. The winning proposal was submitted by John Piper, a rising design talent at CNH. Piper crafted a concept that recalled one of
Hetfield’s tattoos, a skull with wings, together with the sharp iconic font reminiscent of his band’s graphics and album artwork. He also drew from the pinstriping in Hetfield’s private hotrod collection. All these elements were integrated atop a sandy camouflage pattern reminiscent of Hetfield’s signature Snakebyte electric guitar — a direct request from the artist. CNH Senior Designer Darin Weisensel led the production phase of this project, working to bring the custom design to life on the Case TV450B. Built at the Case production facility in Wichita, the TV450B compact track loader is an industry fixture. Tough and rugged, it performs tasks such as digging, loading and dumping in commercial and residential construction activities as well as landscaping. For more information, visit cnh.com. Mecalac Introduces Compact Loaders With Foldable Canopies
Foldable-canopy MCL loaders make agricultural tasks such as stacking bales, managing fodder and cleaning stables simple and efficient.
The foldable-canopy MCL loaders are engineered to excel in confined spaces, specializing in landscaping and agricultural applications.
Mecalac, a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of compact construction equipment, offers a foldable-canopy version of the MCL2, MCL4, MCL6 and MCL8 — part of its MCL compact loader line. The foldable-canopy MCL loaders offer an ideal solution in landscaping and especially agriculture applications, according to the manufacturer. The quick-folding canopy allows operators to leverage the loaders’ benefits in areas with limited overhead clearance, making a spot once inaccessible to machines now a reality. This compactness is especially valuable on a farm where operators are completing work in areas such as livestock stalls and milk parlors. “Space can come at a premium in some work sites, but that doesn’t mean productivity must be sacrificed,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager of Mecalac North America. “Engineering compact loaders with a folding canopy gives our customers an efficient option to thrive in areas not previously reachable with similar equipment.” The MCL loaders are compact but robust machines providing features and functionality not found in other machines their size. A folding canopy allows users to work in areas inaccessible by traditional, larger loaders. The loaders are equipped with hydraulic and maneuverability options, M-Drive and Speed Control. With M-Drive, the engine speed can be controlled independently of travel speed, allowing power and hydraulic flow to be adapted to best suit the job at hand. Speed Control allows operators to set the maximum travel speed from 1 mph to the max speed of 19 mph (MCL6 & MCL8

Four Reasons to Consider Using Compact Excavators By Darren Ashton SPECIAL TO CEG
Some people say skid steer loaders (SSLs) are the most versatile compact machines, largely because the industry has done a nice job of standardizing attachment interfaces across brands. But we’ve seen similar standardization across compact excavators in recent years, so why not take a closer look at the features that might make them an even smarter choice for your fleet? Big Versatility In Small Package As noted, a mini-excavator can support many different attachments. Here are some of the options you’ll be able to use: • General-purpose bucket • Tilt bucket • Grapple bucket • Thumb • Moil-style hammer tool • Chisel-style hammer tool • Blunt hammer tool • Breaker • Auger EW60 with attachments. Consider These Comfort, Performance Features When Purchasing Next CTL Today’s compact track loader models are more powerful, productive, efficient and comfortable than ever. Their popularity has soared as they are now seen as an all-day job site tool. With the increased demand for these machines on a variety of job sites, OEMs have prioritized innovative, ergonomic comfort features without sacrificing power so operators can tackle tough jobs with less fatigue. If you are in the market for a new compact track loader, here is what to look for when evaluating the operation and comfort features. Control, Productivity Convenience can start at the very beginning with technological features like keyless ignition, display screens, intuitive controls and high-quality attachment systems for your compact track loader. Keyless ignition improves contractors’ time savings and efficiency. For compact track loaders with the 7 in. touch display, on-screen attachment control provides valuable information to operators when it comes to monitoring and positioning attachments as well as providing tips for using attachments effectively. Additionally, large, waterproof, scratch-resistant LCD touch displays allow operators to see information clearly inside the cab. Operators won’t even have to take their gloves off to use the touch screen. To further support optimum productivity and performance, operators are opting for Bobcat selectable joystick control, or SJC, for their compact track loaders. With SJC, you control your loader and attachments easily and comfortably with nextlevel customization and control. Low-effort joysticks allow operators to control all machine functions with their hands, and this also is loaded with several exclusive features that adapt to the loader’s performance to specific job requirements. During inclement weather, no operator wants to make repeated trips in and out of the cab. Bobcat’s Power Bob-Tach attachment mounting system allows operators to effortlessly switch between non-hydraulic attachments without having to exit the cab. Other features that keep operators

productive include two-speed travel, automatic ride control and dual-direction bucket positioning. These types of on-demand features will reduce your travel time across job sites, carry material faster across rough terrain and minimize spilling and maximize efficiency when using buckets, respectively. Visibility Cab-forward designs with optional features like clear-side enclosures and rear-view cameras offer optimal visibility while using a compact track loader. When working at night or inclement weather conditions, LED lighting can make it easier for operators to see where they’re moving and depositing materials. Environment Heating and air conditioning is an expected commodity today. Look for compact track loaders that come with these two features, as well as easy to open side windows for increased air circulation. Heated air-ride seats also will keep you warm during the winter and make your ride less bumpy when working on rough terrain. Pressurized cabs that add efficiency to heat and air conditioning systems along with reducing noise and vibration and minimize the debris and dirt that enters the cab allowing you and your team to enjoy working throughout the day. It also reduces noise and vibration, too, allowing
operators to focus more on their job tasks rather than their surrounding environments. This results in higher productivity. Even the smallest features, such as charging and USB ports, Bluetooth radios and device connectivity to take calls from the cab, storage bins and cup holders can make a significant difference to operators. Space Since operators are spending more time in cabs, it’s important to ensure they have plenty of room. Make sure cabs have a large door with lower thresholds to allow for easier entry and exit. Prioritize larger cabs with ample arm, leg and shoulder room so operators remain comfortable during long, busy days. Driving Productivity With challenging labor shortages, stressful project deadlines and harsh job site conditions — comfort is an especially critical aspect of machine design that makes a positive impact on your operator and the bottom line. So, when it comes to selecting the right compact track loader, don’t think you have to sacrifice comfort to achieve maximum performance and efficiency. Today, machines are designed with innovative, ergonomic comfort features so you can overcome job site challenges with less fatigue.

Yanmar Upgrades ViO35-7 Configuration Yanmar Compact Equipment introduced the ViO35-7 mini excavator, featuring significant productivity, configuration and operator experience improvements. The 24.4-hp true zero tail swing excavator includes leading 360-degree visibility, a 25 percent increase in travel speed under load and a 7 percent improvement in excavator efficiency. It fits perfectly in job sites both big and small in construction, rental, utilities, landscaping and more. The ViO35-7 stands out as a flexible and robustly dependable model that provides an excellent power-tosize ratio and is easy to transport and simple to maintain, whether by an owner operator, contractor or rental fleet. “This new iteration of the ViO35 elevates both what operators can do and their experience while doing it,” said Zac Evans, mini excavator product manager, Yanmar Compact Equipment North America. “Yanmar listened to customers and delivered an upgraded model that’s easier to use and move around the jobsite. The ViO35-7 brings new levels of productivity while maintaining unbeatable reliability.” Performance Operators see numerous benefits from the new ViO35-7’s improved productivity and performance features. The 8,047-lb. model has increased excavation capabilities due to greater breakout forces and improved cycle times under load. Plus, a higher torque swing motor boosts power for backfill work involving swinging and usability on slopes. This is all powered by the heartbeat of the ViO35-7, a highly efficient threepump hydraulic system and 24.4-hp Yanmar engine. The three pumps greatly improve performance and lead to less risk of slowing down during simultaneous operations — such as with the boom, stick, swing and curl functions — compared to mini excavators with only one pump. The new model provides increased maneuverability. With 25 percent faster travel speeds under load, operators can move quickly from task to task around the job site. It’s also easier to transition to slower tasks due to the auto kickdown feature built into the two-speed operation.
Reliability The ViO35-7 builds upon the reliability standard in other Yanmar products. The model is designed to last, featuring an overall robust build. That includes a highly durable undercarriage, cylinder guards, hose guards, strategic placement of the boom light to limit risk of damage, Yanmar’s wellknown diesel engine and more. It’s all backed with one of the industry’s best mini excavator warranties: 4years/4,000-hours. The new model includes additional serviceability features, including simplified fan belt tension adjustment due to the rearward location of the alternator. Its engine also doesn’t require the addition of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), allowing for simple operation and service. Yanmar configures the ViO35-7 for

The pin grabber style, double locking quick coupler is versatile, accommodating a wide range of attachments, from buckets to breakers. The ViO35-7 also provides operators with a new level of configuration options to allow owners or businesses to choose the most efficient machine possible for their intended applications. Buyers have the ability to add a second auxiliary circuit for attachments that provide multiple functions such as a rotating grapple or tiltrotator. Straight and angle blade options allow additional ways to customize the machine.
Operator Experience Greater visibility, comfort and ergonomics are all hallmarks of the ViO35-7’s improved operator station. Larger windows and an updated roof design improve jobsite awareness with a leading 360degree view for optimal visibility from the tracks, blade and bucket to peak dump height. Operators can work in greater comfort with an adjustable suspension seat, ergonomic joystick controls and switch positions, reduced cabin noise, improved HVAC distribution and greater foot space with an updated pedal layout. Additionally, the model includes Yanmar Compact Equipment North America photo creature comforts such as a cup holder, phone holder and tablet convenient maintenance, including holder for convenience in the cab. easy access to grease points and filter Technology locations. Deciding Metrics: First Determine Most Relevant Data TELEMATICS from page 28
sending quotations to customers or partners,” said Quijano. When calculating transportation costs consider the following: • Operating costs: Fuel cost per kilometer, fuel surcharge • Fixed costs: insurance, driver wages, depreciation, insurance • Maintenance costs: As the name implies, these are expenses for maintaining your fleet “Your overall goal is to decrease transportation costs while maintaining delivery quality,” she said. But “for obvious reasons, there’s no industry benchmark for transportation costs,” added Quijano. Factors such as intermodal transportation, distance travelled, fuel prices and market conditions influence your costs over time, she said. “However, you can compare your monthly costs against competitors to identify opportunities to optimize” costs. 5. Truckload Capacity Simply put, this metric tracks the percentage of space utilized on
your truck — and every inch of truckload capacity is a revenue opportunity. “Unused space means a loss on fuel costs, extra wear and tear for your fleet, you name it,” said Quijano. To ensure you’re maximizing the potential of your trucks over a given period, divide shipment weight by the available shipping capacity. “Of course, the greater the overall weight, the greater the savings are for businesses and customers alike,” said Quijano. “The goal is to then add as much weight as possible but be mindful to stay within the legal and safety shipment standards.” 6. Billing Accuracy Avoid incurring unnecessary costs by tracking billing accuracy. “Keep a sharp lookout for incorrect pricing, invoices, and inaccurate weight,” said Quijano. You can calculate billing accuracy by dividing the number of errorfree freight bills by the overall freight bills during a given period. You can do this for each carrier or in total to gain insights into charges that might have gone unnoticed,

reduce transportation costs and increase net profit. Your billing accuracy should come in at least 95 percent to 98 percent — 100 percent should always be your goal, said Quijano. “Invoices should accurately reflect the services provided, rates, and surcharges,” she said. “You don’t want to end up overcharging — or undercharging — your customers or partners.” Make sure you train staff involved and consider investing in technology solutions if you don’t have confidence in your manual tracking
