Creative collaboration Working to bring architect Santiago Calatrava’s complex design to life meant the team from Skanska USA worked more closely together every day, as Construction Global reports W R I T T E N B Y: LU C Y D I X O N 7
INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE BEGINNING of this academic year, the first students at the Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) building at Florida Polytechnic University started their studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. The building, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, was constructed by Skanska USA - on-time and within the set budget of $60 million. The biggest challenge facing both the design and the construction teams of the 160,000-square-foot structure was that 90 percent of it was on a radius, so the team had to find a way to build never-done-before louver arms that would rise to 12 stories above grade, and then hydraulically lower – all to ensure the optimum amount of daylight would enter the building. Chuck Jablon, Vice President of Operations at Skanska USA, explains: “These arms raise and lower in sync each day like butterfly wings, with the goal of shading the interior and inspiring the young STEM students as they arrive at school each day.” Working on such a complex building required the very best out of the project team, which included 8

12 salaried Skanska employees, 45 trade contractors and a total of over 1,000 craft workers. Jablon says: “All workers on site needed to pay immense attention to each detail and perform their work with the utmost precision. In order to bring Calatrava’s vision to life, it was imperative to build the project without any imperfections, which took careful planning and close coordination. For example, the rooftop aluminum louvers, with

a 1/16 of an inch tolerance – which represents one of the project’s wow factors – had to move in complete unison in order to work properly.” It is also important to note that there were zero lost-time injuries over the four years of construction work. This is in large part thanks to effective communication amongst all the team members and executives on the project and a strong commitment to maintaining the highest safety
standards that are part of Skanska’s Injury Free Environment culture. It was imperative that the construction team worked closely with the architect to make this a successful project. Jablon says: “We encouraged team members to break down the barriers that normally exist between designers and builders, and amongst construction trades. It was vital that each partner firm worked beyond contractual responsibilities 9

to seek broader, shared solutions. Some of those solutions included having specialty contractors and design consultants participate in design–assist roles since the early stages of the project. An intense trust was developed between the designers and our construction team because every craft worker understood they were creating a structure of which they could be forever proud. Ultimately, the IST building was delivered exactly in line with Calatrava’s original vision. It’s rare for that to happen, even more so on a project of this magnitude that featured unique elements never built before.” The construction materials used weren’t particularly unusual, Jablon explains, but the application of the materials was certainly unique. “Skanska focused on engaging all the stakeholders in the construction and design process from beginning to end. The complex rooftop system is supported by a concrete ring beam – 72 inches deep and 30 inches wide – that encircles the interior of the second floor’s grand common area. On the building’s radii, each column rotates on another angle. This building has about 300 radius points, with an 11
INFRASTRUCTURE incredible 90 percent of everything done on a radius – this is where each arm moves from in unison. “Throughout the building, the concrete is clean and crisp – which required tremendous attention to detail and concrete craftsmanship from our team. The building’s exterior is wrapped by a pergola of lightweight aluminum trellis that covers walkways and gathering spaces. In addition to being visually stunning, the pergola also helps the building function efficiently, reducing the structure’s solar load by 30 percent. Many of the Skanska team’s goal was to bring Calatrava’s design to life, while ensuring the project met the functional needs of the university

building’s details are understated: from the rotation of the columns, to the quality of the concrete pours and the challenging patterns cut into the floors – all of which demonstrates the entire team’s craftsmanship.” Working in such a different way had a big impact on all the team. Jablon says: “The biggest lesson we all learned as a team was to never compromise the design or the design intent. The most important aspect to accomplish early on is developing trust between Skanska as the builder and Calatrava as the designer. The biggest concern for world-renowned designers such as Calatrava is that their design will be compromised during the project’s preconstruction or the construction phase. Our Skanska team’s goal was to bring his design to life, while ensuring the project met the functional needs of the university. If you’re a builder, this is the type of project you dream about doing in your career. It’s an opportunity to take your experience and your knowledge and gather people you’ve worked with throughout your career and say: ‘Friends, we’ve got one. We’ve got what we’ve been dreaming about building our whole career.’

Construction Global reports on the award-winning building projects that won this year’s Global Holcim Awards
EVERY THREE YEARS, the Global Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction have been recognising projects that deliver tangible benefits to local communities. And this year’s winners – sharing prize money of $350,000 – were chosen from over 6,000 entries from 152 countries. They include a project to turn a decommissioned water reservoir 14 December 2015
into a park in Medellín, Colombia, rebuilding social fabric through a community library in Ambepussa following Sri Lanka’s civil war, and creating public zones and floodprotection for the island of Manhattan. The judges, led by Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Graduate School of Design (GSD) at Harvard University, highlighted the
impressive quality of the entries. Jury member Alejandro Aravena of Elemental in Chile says: “The Holcim Awards have not just been able to bring sustainability to the attention of the people but have also raised the standard and the quality of how professionals have to deal with it.” And fellow judge Meisa Batayneh Maani of Maisam Architects and Engineers,
adds: “The competition sheds light on the way people live in different regions of the world and celebrates their specific ambition to live better lives. By doing so, the Holcim Awards disseminate information, showing the world what’s going on.” The international competition seeks innovative construction projects to promote sustainable 15

To compare the diverse submissions, the juries use the target issues for sustainable construction which have been identified by the Holcim Foundation, covering environmental performance, social responsibility and economic efficiency and also architectural quality and the suitability for broadscale application and multiplication of the project’s features. The competition has been run by the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation since 2004, and is supported by Holcim Ltd and its group companies in around 70 countries. BR has a long and distinguished history as a contracting engineering and construction company. Its antecedent companies MW Kellogg and Brown & Root date back to the early 20th century, and though they did not merge until 1998 these are the names still indelibly etched in the consciousness of the worldwide contracting sector. Today’s KBR was formed in 2006 when it spun out from Halliburton and floated on the New York Stock Exchange. In mid-2014, KBR streamlined its operations to focus on core strengths as a technology, engineering, procurement and construction company serving the global hydrocarbons and government services industries. Its three distinct global businesses: Technology &
MIDDLE EAST
Consulting; Engineering & Construction; and Government Services, are all in evidence as KBR seeks to lead the field in contracting and consulting, however the Middle East is currently offering a key set of opportunities. Over the years KBR has been involved in many projects in the Middle East region, largely as a global operator working out of its Houston, Texas headquarters; and its London Operating Centre. Right now, that is all changing, and KBR is pursuing a strategy of getting a whole lot closer to each of the countries in the region. A key move was the appointment in March 2015 of Jay Ibrahim, a Lebanese-born American, to the post of President, Engineering & Construction, Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Ibrahim now leads KBR’s expansion in the region, in upstream, midstream and downstream projects. Prices and producers The current slump in hydrocarbon prices is a constraining factor on oil producers wherever they are, admits Graham Hill, KBR’s recently appointed Executive Vice President responsible for Global Business Development and Strategy. But that’s not the whole story. “People think the industry comes to a halt as a result. It does not!” he insists, and with 38 years of contracting experience in global hydrocarbons, his analysis is worth listening to. “As the oil price falls, priority is given to those areas of the world where operators

can still make money at the prevailing market rates. We must not forget that the cheapest oil in the world is produced from onshore oil production in the Middle East. Their offshore oil is also relatively cheap because the waters are shallow and benign. The rest of the world is producing oil from deep and hostile waters, fields a long way from shore, using extensive subsea techniques and complex equipment like FPSOs, often in hostile conditions. “Beyond accessibility and proximity lies capacity. Look forward a century, and whatever progress renewables have made there will still be a demand for hydrocarbons. Where will these be found? in ‘the endgame’ will be the Middle East”. “There’s a lot of talk about shale,” he continues, pre-empting the inevitable question, “but shale is relatively expensive to produce, especially if you’re not in the USA. There they have the pipeline and road infrastructure to support it but in other places, the logistics both of production and delivery to the market are daunting, even if you can get past the environmental and social hurdles we all know about.” Jay Ibrahim does not think the oil price is a major issue for his clients. It’s more a matter of the ‘social burden’ that is placed on oil revenues, in countries that by and large lack other sources

of foreign exchange. That means anything from infrastructure to health and education. “Though the cost of production, and the social burden vary from country to country, with costs typically under $20 a barrel, most Middle East countries claim there is about $50 per barrel social burden. This means that, for most of the countries, $60-80 is their breakeven point.” So at the current prices, fluctuating between $40 and $50 per barrel, something has to give, as manifested in the June decision to shelve the 11 regional football stadia that Saudi Arabia is planning to build. “They are also sweating their facilities to get more out

of them. When the oil prices go down most operators, including those in the Middle East, think about how much juice they can get out of their existing facilities by doing revamping and debottlenecking projects as opposed to spending a lot of money on new capital projects. At the end of the day, using Micawber economics the Middle East is a happy oil producer because it is among the few selling at more than the cost of production. It also has to keep the wells flowing, and the exploration drills turning because true diversification is some way from being realized. For now the diversification is itself oil based, as the Gulf states spend and spend on downstream derivatives and chemicals. This again represents an opportunity for KBR.

Nevertheless, despite having a second-to-none presence in the Middle East, before this year KBR engaged with the region very much as a global partner rather than a local player. In the past KBR was executing specific projects in the ME as opposed to building sustainable continuous business in the various countries and primarily in engineering and construction (E&C) projects. From this year, this approach has changed, as reflected in Jay Ibrahim’s appointment and the establishment of a regional headquarters in Abu Dhabi. “We have been sub-scale in relation to the number of projects we deliver,” he admits, “but from here on in our operating model will be to work as a local business in each of the counties of interest. Instead of looking to the Houston, Texas office/headquarters to provide the expertise and resources it needs, KBR is increasingly autonomous in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions. In particular, it has been investing heavily in India. “India is a vital part of the supply chain for projects in the Middle East,” says Graham Hill. “It is geographically close. The Middle East countries have small populations, and to supplement the indigenous population they naturally employ people from the subcontinent.” Though India still retains its low-cost advantage, there are many other compelling reasons why KBR has chosen to establish technology centers there. Among the requirements sourced from India are engineering and procurement services, construction labor, construction supervision, technology, licensing, chemical sales, equipment manufacturing, specialty items and many others. “We do all these things out of India because it is a very competitive country, a largely Englishspeaking market, and has a legal system based on English law.” And in order to avoid any short term supply side constraints KBR has deliberately chosen diverse locations, at present Pune in the west, Chennai in the east and Delhi in the north.

With 26 integrated world-scale manufacturing plants, over three million metric tons of capacity per year, and a total investment of about US$20 billion, it is anticipated that Sadara will become a Fortune 500 company within the first year of full operation – 2016/17. KBR’s part in this massive project was to execute the project feasibility and pre-FEED (front-end engineering and design) for the entire complex, as well as the FEED scopes of several major assets. The company will continue to have significant numbers in Jubail as part of the integrated project management team assisting Dow and Aramco during the final stages of the project, says Ibrahim. “We have been engaged on that project for five or six years.” Sadara has scored a lot of superlatives, not least clocking up 80 million construction man-hours without a Lost Time Incident (LTI). That achievement had nothing to do with luck, he insists. The KBR onsite team performed hundreds of joint safety walkthroughs with the project management team and their construction contractors. The same culture is applied in the other major projects in the region, such as the Jazan refinery and terminal, again for Saudi Aramco. In 2012 KBR was awarded a contract for FEED and PMS services to develop the process design, layout, integration and optimization of the facility, develop equipment and material specifications, the preparation of EPC bid packages and the development of a construction estimate for the refinery. client seeks to pass on the majority of the risk to the EPC partner. There may be ‘better’ models when benchmarked against western economies, but western regulatory frameworks may not fit so well in the Middle East. It comes back to fundamentals. The Middle East continues to attract money, as evidenced by the interest of Chinese contractors like Sinopec and Indian players like Larsen and Toubro and Punj Lloyd, which are taking an increasing interest, following on the heels of the Korean contractors who picked up $15 billion of contracts seven years ago. This inward investment is good news for KBR, which is ready to provide Pre-FEED, FEED, Project Management, and even EPC, construction

One other tempting market remains; in Iraq KBR would like to grow the footprint it has alongside the IOCs at the large oilfields of Rumaila and Majnoon (where KBR is already building the camp for Shell). He also is keeping a close eye on Iran. Sanctions make direct engagement impossible right now, but he sees engagement with Iran as an important keystone of KBR’s ambition to be a major local player in the Middle East. With the rapid thaw in Iran’s relationship with the west, a KBR presence in Tehran might not be too distant a prospect.

hen it comes to power sources, Texas is well known as a land of oil and natural gas. But with a fluctuating market and complex consumer demands, diversification is more important now than ever before. To add range to Texas’s energy supply, the state brought in the expertise of Archer Western Construction, one of the biggest and most experienced hydro plant builders in the United States. Through a partnership with the Trinity River Authority and East Texas Electric Cooperative, Archer Western’s $100 million 24-megawatt (mW) Lake Livingston Hydro Plant project is on track toward providing 82

east Texan homes with a greener source of power.
The perfect place to build Hydro plants are a relatively uncommon sight in Texas. But when the perfect location presented itself, the partners behind the Lake Livingston Hydro Plant project seized the opportunity to bring the state more green energy. That location is Lake Livingston, an eastern Texas reservoir along the Trinity River that provides around 71 percent of Houston’s water supply. “The Trinity River runs right through the middle of Lake Livingston, and for every gallon of

Powerhouse, pre-excavation water that comes into the lake, they have to let a gallon out to go down to Houston,” says Andy Pettit, assistant project manager for Archer Western’s Livingston Hydro Plant project. As Pettit explains, this project will route water through the hydro plant instead of directly through the dam, taking advantage of the flowing water as a source of power generation. “There’s always going to be energy being made,” he says. “If it’s low flows, there might just be one gate at the hydro plant open and the dam closed off; with high flows, all three gates at the hydro plant might be opened with some gates of the dam as well. But because this is Houston’s main source of water, it’s never going to stop.”

uncharted waters alone—it is able to draw from the extensive knowledge of its divisions nationwide. “Here in Texas we stay in close contact with people working on the other hydro plants. There’s one in Kentucky right now, and one in Pennsylvania as well,” says Pettit. “We have them come down about once a year and we sit down for meetings to go over what they’ve learned from building their own hydro plants.” By pooling this information, Archer Western is able to bring clients the best and most cutting edge facilities in every frontier. Opportunities for innovation The biggest benefit of the knowledge network that Archer Western brings to the Lake
Livingston Hydro Plant project is the ability to find new innovations for the hydro plant model. This has led to a project with unique features that combine added strength and efficiency. One key innovative feature in the Lake Livingston Hydro Plant project is its penstocks connecting the intake structure to the powerhouse. “Typically they will be steel pipe with a lining on the inside. Originally we had 14 foot diameter steel pipes running 2,000 feet from the intake to the powerhouse,” says Pettit. “Through value engineering, that ended up being changed to reinforced concrete penstocks, a big 3-barreled box culvert. It’s my understanding that these are the first concrete penstocks ever.” Changes to infrastructure are

not done without good reason, and the concrete penstocks introduced with the Lake Livingston Hydro Plant project bring with them considerable benefits including significant cost savings to East Texas Electric Cooperative, given that steel pipes must be welded, coated, and placed in special bedding for protection from the elements. The structure of the concrete penstocks adds increased longevity, so that East Texas Electric Cooperative consumers will be able to enjoy the benefits of the hydro plant for decades to come.

Working together on a brighter future With plans in design underway, there is still plenty of work left to do. Working with suppliers and subcontractors like Gracon LLC on plans to set turbines and generators in place, Archer Western is on track to complete its Lake Livingston Hydro Plant project by 2018. These partnerships are a vital part of the building process. “We always communicate with them and value their input on everything and work together,” says Pettit of working together with partners toward a common goal. “We work together to come up with the best solution.” The results of that teamwork and effort upon completion will be 12,000 homes in East Texas powered by hydroelectric energy. In a world where diverse energy sources are needed, it’s an important step forward for hydro power and for Texas.

hat a difference a year makes: In August 2014, the Toledo DPU advised half a million people in the area to not drink their tap water due to a toxin detected in the water supply. A state of emergency was declared and residents were without drinking water for nearly three days. “The do-not-drink advisory is a big 92

part of our story, because it became a catalyst for change,” said Toledo’s DPU Director Ed Moore. While residents have since returned to normalcy, it’s been a different story for the utilities department. Over the past year, DPU has launched a slew of programs and initiatives to upgrade infrastructure in order to ensure the contamination

issue never occurs again. Plan of attack According to Moore, the utilities department in Toledo had been falling on hard times in recent years, with decreased funding for capital projects and infrastructure. This resulted in a significant amount of deferred maintenance.
“In 2013, with the help of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, we went to the city council and received a water rate increase for capital improvements. We initiated $314 million in bonds through the rate increase, assigned $264 million for the drinking water plant, and the other $50 million to the water distribution system, said Moore. w w w. t o l e d o . o h . g o v

Large diameter pipeline “The original plan was to stretch all the improvements over a 20year period, but the Ohio EPA was seriously concerned about the condition of the drinking water plant and condensed the plan down to five years.” Faced with this quick turnaround, DPU needed to be highly organized and efficient to meet its goals. “That’s why we hired Warren Henry to lead the water treatment improvements program,” said Moore. “He basically quarterbacked this initiative and turned things around, including our relationship with the Ohio EPA.” “He called me after the drinking 94

water advisory and offered to help. When a guy like Warren calls, you get him started working right away. Warren played a big part in what we did and I give him a lot of credit,” Moore said. Implementing change While plans may have been in the works, the do-not-drink advisory threw into sharp relief how critically Toledo needed these vital upgrades to improve the quality of life for the community. The first step toward change for DPU was getting the donot-drink advisory lifted. Since then, it has been a beehive of activity with almost as

Dearborn project many contractor personnel as city employees at the water treatment plant. The department immediately updated its treatment protocol using a combination of chemicals to treat Lake Erie water. “We quadrupled our powder active carbon, quadrupled the potassium intake and activated an early warning system with a buoy that serves as a floating weather system,” said Moore. DPU also convened a Blue Ribbon Panel of nine national experts to review long-term plant improvements to remove algae toxins. The panel recommended a process that pushed the City of Toledo into the future of water treatment. “They
came in and validated everything we were planning to do. Additionally, the panel recommended we add ozone to our plant, which is the big gun for the microsystin toxin. It’s basically creating lightning in a bottle and electrifying our water. It’s been around but it’s very expensive.” Taking it a step further, the department has invested approximately $12 million in a new chlorination facility at the treatment plant that will allow more chlorine to be stored on site and injected in more locations along the treatment process, which should prevent future undesired scenarios from happening again. w w w. t o l e d o . o h . g o v

In the end, the do-not-drink advisory was a major learning experience for all of the agencies involved. The silver lining of the ordeal is the department has an established protocol for procuring consistent sampling, which is now being used as a model statewide. Toledo Waterways Initiative Upon citizen approval in 2002, and in compliance with the city’s consent decree, DPU is in the midst of the Toledo Waterways Initiative (TWI), a massive water pollution control project to upgrade sewer infrastructure and reduce overflows into area waterways that will cost in excess of $500 million. Led by Julie Cousino, Program Administrator of TWI, the initiative is nearing completion after more than a decade since its inauguration. TWI aims to reduce contaminants in local rivers, streams and Lake Erie by building several types of structures to hold, separate or divert storm and waste water during periods of heavy rain. This water is then funneled for treatment before being returned to the waterways. Completed in 2006, phase one of
TWI consisted of improvements to the water reclamation plant with the addition of a wet weather facility with cutting-edge technology, including a 25 MG equalization basin that doubled the capacity of the plant. Phase two was completed in 2014 and included the elimination of all known sanitary sewer overflows. The third portion of the program, which is currently underway, involves the reduction of combined sewer overflows. The largest project for this portion of TWI includes a 36 MG underground storage basin. “The Toledo Waterways Initiative is one of the most innovative initiatives I’ve been a part of,” said Moore. “This program will allow us to have w w w. t o l e d o . o h . g o v

Collins Park settling basin a platform to build upon and set the stage for continuous improvements down the road.” With the completion of construction in 2020, Cousino said, “TWI will eliminate approximately 650 MG of untreated sewage from entering Toledo’s waterways annually. That’s an 80 percent reduction in overflow volume.” “Julie Cousino has been paramount for us and has ensured that all portions of the project are completed on time and on budget,” Moore said. Moving forward “Since the advisory, there have not only been massive capital 98

upgrades and investments” said Henry, “but the City has improved communications with the public using social media and the City’s website.” To ensure transparency among residents, earlier this year DPU began implementing a realtime dashboard posted on the city’s website that closely monitors water conditions in the intake crib in Lake Erie. “One of the biggest benefits of the water-quality dashboard is that it dispelled rumors about drinking water conditions on a daily basis,” said Moore. The system records the current status of drinking water quality based on Ohio EPA guidelines. The

scale consist of: • CLEAR: not detected in the intake crib in Lake Erie and in tap water • WATCH: microsystin detected in the intake crib in Lake Erie but not detected in tap water • CAUTION: microcystin detected in tap water, but test results do not indicate the need to issue an advisory; additional testing and sampling underway and water treatment has been accelerated • PRE-SCHOOL ADVISORY: do not drink for children five and younger. • DO NOT DRINK ADVISORY: do not drink for all citizens “We have an advanced warning system for early detection with buoys and sondes that allows us to implement operational changes, prior to the microcystin reaching the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant,” said Moore. In addition, the drinking water advisory also revealed a lack of communication with interdepartmental agencies. Therefore, DPU has developed a text message and email system that links all regional community partners with instant communication. DPU brought in industry experts, business community members and academia to brainstorm together. “All the ideas and recommendations came out of the stakeholder group. This group will continue to play a vital role in restoring the public’s confidence in our water system,” Moore concluded.

delivering commercially superior solutions to their customers while installing state-of-the-art equipment and processes to ensure the most efficient manufacturing, with significant attention being paid to environmental protection. In its mission toward sustainability, Holcim focuses on limiting the environmental footprint of its production, specifically in regards to energy and water usage for producing each ton of cement. With a commitment to make major investments in the latest technologies, Holcim intends to develop an energy-efficient culture within its staff by embedding energy efficient habits of consumption into their daily work. This will be accomplished by upgrading current equipment to reduce the volume of electrical and thermal energy used, substituting fossil fuels with alternative fuels to generate fewer CO2 emissions and using mineral components in all products to preserve the quality expected by its customers. One of Holcim’s largest investments is the company’s
Waste Heat Recover (WHR) Power plant, which has been operating since 2012. The steam-cycle plant is among the first in Vietnam to use heat from the production process to generate electrical energy. The plant uses two waste heat sources: a kiln preheater exhaust and a clinker cooler exhaust. Since the WHR plant meets 25 per cent of the plant’s electricity requirements, it takes pressure off the national grid supply and significantly reduces CO2 emissions by an estimated 25,000 tonnes per year. This provides massive benefits to the environment, economy and society as a whole. Some of the company’s other investments include using a Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) to reduce energy consumption in cement production, installing bag filters to reduce dust emissions and perfecting co-processing technology in Hon Chong cement plant. Using co-processing in cement kiln technology, Holcim developed its operation using considerable investments in new technology for its co-processing actions at the Hon Chong cement plant.

These innovations didn’t happen overnight, but instead came about through small, incremental changes initiated by Holcim’s goal of continuous improvement. This has led to Holcim receiving several national and international certificates, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. “At Holcim Vietnam, continuous improvement is not only the task of constantly seeking out ways to improve processes, products or services, but also is considered a business strategy,” said Nguyen. “In over 20 years of operation, we have achieved a lot of important national and international certificates and have used them as crucial measurement criteria to streamline and improve our daily operations while maintaining consistency and quality.”
Talent management Holcim instills a commitment to health and safety in everything it does. The company’s “Zero Harm” plan has a goal of conducting business without having any injuries, while creating a safe and healthy environment for employees, contractors, visitors and communities. “This is how we intend to make a difference in the way we work, in our business and communities,” said Nguyen. In order to achieve this, Holcim maintains a global health and safety management system designed to continuously improve performance and manage risk. It also establishes a culture of safe execution through targeting operational discipline and communicating with all stakeholders on relevant issues.

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, and Caesarstone spends a large portion of its resources to create unique designs in order to stay above its admiring competitors. One of a kind Caesarstone has been able to build and maintain the best brand recognition in Australia through years of evolving marketing strategies, combined with a focus on business-to-business relationship building. But above all, Caesarstone preserves the best product quality and innovation design solutions. As a brand name that is often viewed as the ultimate brand of the quartz-surface industry, this type of recognition has both positive and negative effects. “It’s good because everybody knows the brand Caesarstone, so that’s what consumers want,” said CFO of Caesarstone Australia and South East Asia Moshe Wolfson. In an attempt to differentiate its product from those of the
competition, Caesarstone makes unique designs a focal point of its operations. In Australia, Caesarstone has about 50 different colours of quartz countertop designs, with a slightly higher number in the U.S. While the actual process and technology used at Caesarstone is confidential, the company is a close partner with Breton technology, which manufactures the machinery. With a warehouse in each Australian capital city, Caesarstone’s primary focus is making sure it has enough product in stock, while also not having an overabundance that would create dead stock. With the help of Hawthorn-based Taars consulting, Caesarstone uses forecasting to predict the demand and the required purchases. Forecasting is a vital component of Caesarstone’s logistics success,

Caesarstone puts an emphasis on efficient production in order to minimise waste of raw materials and energy. Some of its production processes to protect the environment include recycling and disposal of hazardous materials. Branching out A key to Caesarstone’s success is innovation to keep its brand thriving. Several years of consistent marketing strategies, as well as building businessto-business relationships, have boosted Caesarstone’s brand recognition to the highest levels in Australia. The company is also working closely with its partners to develop the brand in New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, China, India as well as other countries, targeting high GDP per capita regions. In addition, it has recently expanded its production to the United States market as well. Caesarstone has made a substantial US$130 million investment in two production lines in Richmond Hill, Ga. The first line is already operational, while the second line is just about to start up. “It’s obviously a statement of our willingness to put that sort of investment to develop the U.S. market,” said Wolfson.

Construtora Ferreira Guedes As the center of the Agis group operations, Construtora Ferreira Guedes brings major infrastructure projects in its portfolio. Founded in 1936, it is responsible for some of the most emblematic projects in Brazil, having participated in construction of most of the roads in the state of São Paulo and many other parts of the country, as well as the Carajás railway and the Transposition of San Francisco River. According to Carlos Nobre, Director of Business Development of Agis Group, despite being dedicated to public contracts in recent years, his team is also developing new parternships and contracts in the private sector. “We are currently active in the portfolio of suppliers of large

ecnoedil S.A.’s presence in Paraguay’s public works during the last 60 years has proven the construction company worth as an unconditional partner to the country’s infrastructure development.
Construction of CAIASA agro-industrial center
Though “sea, land and air” may be a bit of stretch when addressing the company’s involvement in different projects nationwide — due to the fact that Paraguay does not border any sea — even major ports in the Paraguay River host public projects involving Tecnoedil, as well as airports, highways, avenues and other routes. The company is involved in private investment projects for industry and commerce, as well as for the Social Prevention Institute’s healthcare facilities. The equipment and machinery owned by Tecnoedil doesn’t seem to ever idle, given other business units include equipment rental as well as building supplies and consumables sale. Tecnodil provides the country’s construction sector of the latest-generation machinery, which otherwise would be nearly inaccessible in Paraguay. “Over the years, Tecnoedil has proven to be the leading company for Paraguay’s public works,” proudly stated Roque Ardissone, engineer and General Manager for Tecnoedil, whose tenure with the company started shortly after graduating from Asuncion National University in 1974. Projects all over Paraguay Tecnoedil’s involvement in multiple projects keeps the company’s staff busy, transferring their machinery across Paraguay. Tecnoedil´s capability of bringing Paraguay the most advanced technology and machinery for construction also serves another business unit: machinery rental and sales of construction consumables. Tecnoedil exports gravel to northern Argentina (a scarce commodity in the area), in addition torunning a roof panel manufacturing, distribution and sales operation. Establishing a joint venture with an important Spanish corporation allowed Tecnoedil to import a kind of prefabricated concrete, which previously was only available in Europe. “We strive to improve our service offer for the construction sector by bringing innovative, latestgeneration products into Paraguay,” explained the executive.

proper training and become certified operators of construction vehicles. The company has 500 machines and vehicles working on simultaneous projects countrywide, resulting in openings for future operators and topographers. Engineers and other technicians are also eligible to receive scholarships for postgraduate studies.
Forecast calling for planned, control growth Due to fluctuations in domestic and regional economic markets, Tecnoedil is not taking unnecessary risks during the current project tender bonanza in their home country. The company is planning to achieve a 10 to 15 percent growth rate. Based on the company’s work quality, accomplishing this rather modest projection is a reasonable expectation.

Tecnoedil’s competed projects portfolio and longstanding reputation only benefits Paraguay’s construction sector. One pending project for Tecnoedil is to earn highway operation concession, in the same conditions of their current operation of the Ciudad del Este route, which is currently the only such concession in Paraguay. Other pending endeavors include properly planning and training the upcoming generation of executives to take over the company’s reins when current board members retire.

“Our younger staff is on the right track to take over the company. We have clearly addressed their preparation as our assignment and it’s been developing properly,” Ardissone concluded.
