Networking Your Way to More Friends, More Adventures, and More Success!

Studies show that one of the biggest limiting factors for women in business is lack of a network. Women are less likely to have extensive networks to support and promote them as leaders, they are less likely to have day to day support at work, access to senior leadership, have someone coach them on company and industry politics or suggest them for opportunities and promotions. Julie Brown can change that!

Meet Julie Brown, Networking Expert. Brown’s interactive keynote will show you how to assess the strength and size of your network, discuss introvert vs extrovert networking, review the five most effective networking tools (virtual and in person), explain how to fit networking into your schedule everyday, and much more. The lessons learned can be immediately put into practice.

Blueprints for Change: Sustainable Building Structures

Structural engineers are not always involved in early discussions related to sustainable or green project approaches. Two critical aspects of carbon reduction are material selection and detailing for mitigation of energy loss, both of which benefit from the expertise of a structural engineer. This breakout session will discuss traditional concrete, steel, masonry, and wood structural systems, and alternative materials and products which can be used to reduce these systems’ embodied carbon. The presenters will also discuss structural detailing for thermal breaks. Case studies will be used to reinforce the topic, including the recently completed New Canaan Library, a pilot project for the Design for Freedom initiative.

Sending the Elevator Down – Why Female Leaders are Responsible for Empowering the Next Generation of Women in the AEC Industry

Being a female leader in a male dominated industry does not come without speed bumps. For mid-career professional woman, societal expectations might be that we have reached a high point, but we did not reach our positions by accident. The speaker will share her story of how her climbing the career ladder has influenced and shaped her as a leader, stressing the importance of role models and mentors that show a path of possibilities. Many women in the industry do not have enough female leadership in their career path to show them the possibilities to which they can aspire. This breakout session is a call to action for all men and women to understand the important role they play as mentors to each other and future women in our industry. Every woman has the capacity to become an unstoppable leader. This session will be repeated at 11:15am.

Inclusive Design, Rationale + Practice

Inclusive design is a framework for the design of places, things, information and policy. It is born of a conviction that design has powerful potential to shape human experience and it puts people at the center of the design process. Inclusive Design anticipates the ordinary but extraordinary diversity of ability, age, culture and builds in design solutions. The presenters will provide an overview of the global movement and illustrate Inclusive Design with case studies from the built environment.

B e That One Guy

BTOG trainings teach participants about the domino effect of harassment and help members understand their own ability to transition from a bystander to an Upstander. Union supervision, leadership and signatory contractors learn a better way to handle situations - one that shifts us away from the aggressor-biased solutions used in the past and embraces the power of Upstanders to become part of the solution. The concept of bystanders having the power to change jobsite culture is the core of our program.
