Becoming a Problem Solver -Dealing with Conflict as a Normal Part of Business
Sexual Harassment Training for Small Employers
Master problem solving skills needed to cope with unexpected conflicts that arise during the course of doing business -- including a construction project. Participants will be given a problem solving toolkit and role playing exercises which will be discussed.
This course is intended provide supervisory and management level employees with the knowledge of how to avoid, recognize and remedy sexual harassment in the workplace. "Sexual harassment" will be defined, the law will be explained and managers will learn how to address suspected sexual harassment in the workplace. Anyone who supervises other employees in the workplace are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Movable Bridge Engineering Thursday, May 6, 2020
1-Day Workshop - 8 AM-4 PM (lunch provided) Cost: Members $330 - Non-Member $450 The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Construction Institute are offering a session for practicing engineers on the topic of movable bridges. We will cover the civil and structural engineering considerations of designing movable bridges.

Learn the basics of movable bridges, both highway and railroad. Discuss current AREMA and AASHTO code requirements regarding movable bridges. Learn the civil and structural engineering process of designing movable bridges. Learn the advantages/disadvantages of 3 types of movable bridges (vertical-lift, horizontal swing and bascule). Session will include photos of movable bridges and bridge components to better illustrate the material. Participants will receive copies of portions of the AREMA & AASHTO specification sections relating to movable bridges.

Principles & Practice of Railroad Engineering Thursday-Friday, May 14-15, 2020
2-Day Workshop - 8 AM-4 PM (lunch provided) Cost: Members $595 - Non-Member $795 This two-day course covers the fundamental engineering principles of the design and operation of railroads: passenger, freight and transit. It is assumed that participants will have a background in engineering, but not necessarily in the railroad field. Several guest lecturers, known experts in their particular field of railroad engineering, will also participate in the course. Specific topics covered in the course include train resistance, track components and rail, train geometry and alignment, bridges (deck types and loading), railroad motive power, high speed passenger rail, yards and interlockings, railroad signaling and freight vs passenger operations.
Learning Objectives
• Understand the fundamentals of railroad signaling: wayside, cab and PTC. • Learn the basics of third rail and overhead catenary traction power systems. • Understand basic track geometry and yard layouts. • Appreciate operational differences between passenger and freight operations. Several guest lecturers, known experts in their particular field of railroad engineering, will also participate in the course.
