At a first glance, the skid-steer loader is hardly as impressive as some of the more visible pieces of construction equipment you may see in our part of the world. The humble and usually small skid-steer does not have the size of a big excavator or the stature and prominence of a tower crane. Neither does it have the power of a bulldozer, nor the presence of a large dumper. What it lacks in these aspects, however, it more than makes up for in utility and versatility. And sophistication. You do not get to be among the top two most popular machine categories in an entire region such as the Middle East without having a trick or many up your sleeve. The skid-steer loader’s bag of tricks is the range of complex attachments and tools it supports, which makes it suitable for an array of functions that perhaps no other single machine is capable of. From loading and material handling to landscaping and sand cleaning – and plenty more – the number of jobs that a skid-steer can perform makes it the darling of both fleet and individual owners. Add to this the relatively low cost of upkeep, and, as Bobcat, Case, et al tell us in this issue, you are as likely to find multiple units of skid-steer loaders with the large fleet operators who serve big construction projects as you are to find your friendly neighbourhood Pathan rolling up in his own single unit when you want to hire someone to, say, flatten the nearby sandy lot for a car park.

Green machines are another area that we look at in this issue. It’s a revelation how fast emission-free machinery has caught on. While not yet popular in prime fossil-fuel territory such as the Middle East, they are gaining traction in advanced economies. And with our region gradually becoming environmentally aware, it is only a matter of time before we see more green machines headed our way. The new Iveco Stralis, launched in Madrid last month, is already one such option that might soon be plying Middle Eastern roads. Its NP version has probably the first gas engine in commercial transport that eliminates the gap with diesel engines. As the Holy Month makes way for Eid Al-Fitr festivities this month, we extend our heartiest greetings and best wishes to CMME readers. Eid Mubarak!

The new “3D printed” building next to Emirates Towers (‘World’s ‘first 3D-printed office’ opens in Dubai’) is certainly the shape of things to come. If this structure took just 17 days to ‘print’, then it’s not difficult to imagine how such technologies will start to transform our industry. It will be interesting to see what kind of regulation and issues around buildings standards this throws up. James Scott, online comment

Volvo Trucks has developed a new concept vehicle that cuts fuel consumption by more than 30%. The new truck uses aerodynamic design and lower kerb weight to achieve the drastic reduction in fuel consumption, the Swedish truck giant said. There is a massive 40% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency of both tractor and trailer and the entire rig has been optimised for improved aerodynamics with features such as cameras instead of rear-view mirrors to cut air resistance. It’s also fitted with newly-developed tyres with lower rolling resistance and a trailer that

weighs 2t less than standard. “Energy-efficient vehicles are a priority for us both out of environmental concern and to reduce customers’ costs. Our concept truck showcases the immense power of ongoing technical advances,” said Claes Nilsson, president and CEO, Volvo Trucks. The truck is the result of a fiveyear research project to create more energy-efficient vehicles with support from the Swedish Energy Agency. Though not available on the market, its features are already being used on Volvo’s road trucks, with more to follow.

quipment from Italian crushing powerhouse MB Crusher is helping to clear the way in the building proces of the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) through the eponymous mountain range in the Caspian Sea area. The 692km SCP has been designed to transport gas from the Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea, through Georgia and on to the Georgia-Turkey border. At full capacity, and after additional stages of development, the pipeline is expected to carry up to 25 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year from the Shah Deniz field to customers in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The expanded SCP system will tie into the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) in eastern Turkey and connect with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline at Turkey’s western border some 1,900km away, which will eventually continue under the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy. As a partner in the development of the SCP and TANAP, MB Crusher is providing 13 of its MB-S18 S3 screening buckets for construction work in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The screening buckets, suitable for excavators from 20t to 35t, make it possibile to directly reuse recovered material, particularly useful in road building, construction and maintenance of pipelines. They allow the entire process to be completed without having to transport the excavated material off-site for screening and crushing, which saves both time and money, and mitigates much of the environmental impact of the project. The MB-S18 S3 can also be fitted with a magnet and a nebuliser kit, increasing its versatility for the separation of iron along with the suppression of dust, which is making it an ideal equipment for use in the inhabited areas the pipeline is being built through. The MB-S18 S3 from MB Crusher, fitted to Caterpillar excavators, is returning a crushing performance in several remote areas of the project, where extreme weather conditions and inhospitable terrain test equipment to the maximum.

NEWS ANALYSIS JULY 2016

The Iran ImpacT

With sanctions removed and an economy freed to outside influences, CMME looks at the opportunities and challenges for machinery sellers in the iranian market

W

hile in the political sphere there are myriad interests, ideologies and matters of national security being played out in the competing interests of the Gulf States, America and Iran, in the world of construction machinery the reality is a lot more simple: companies just want to sell some kit. Since European and US companies were barred from selling machinery and vehicles to Iran, their overall sales figures in the Middle East region have suffered to some extent – with some companies that had a larger share of the Iran market more heavily impacted by the freeze. And for good reason: Iran is the largest market for vehicles, and one of the largest markets for machinery in the wider region. Many truck sellers had assembly facilities in the country, and there exist long-standing relationships with local distributors. It’s no secret that virtually the day after sanctions were lifted the flights into Tehran were full of representatives from the various equipment sellers, looking to re-establish connections, and their presence, in the market. After all, there must be a huge and unmet demand for spare parts in the country. But, as they make a beeline for the country, they may find a market where the trading environment has changed massively. Chinese manufacturers – unconstrained by political sanctions – have made massive in-roads into the market, both for heavy machinery and trucks, busses and passenger vehicles. Other manufacturing nations have also been similarly unrestrained – in Taiwan there were no restrictions on trade with Iran, as long as their technology did not contain any elements licensed or built by a US company. Nevertheless, practically speaking, Chinese equipment sellers have talked about the difficulties of receiving payment for machines – after all, the international links for Iran’s banking system were shut down by the sanctions. Chinese brands have in the past been beset by quality issues in some markets –

17 but with the new wave of machinery of a tougher design, it will be interesting to see how deeply the Chinese brands have penetrated the Iranian market, and whether the western brands will be able to wrestle back something approaching their former market shares. It’s also worth wondering how successful the sanctions have been in restricting the flow of spare parts into the country – one imagines that where there is a demand, the market will do its best to meet it (though of course this is not to cast aspersions on the integrity of the major companies in abiding by the sanctions). Recent aftermarket expos in Dubai have seen large numbers of buyers from Iran looking to purchase spare parts including tyres, air, oil and water filters, that could be containerised and shipped across the Arabian Gulf. With these sorts of cheap parts able to be sourced en masse from smaller suppliers in China and elsewhere in Asia, it’s a likelihood that some traders in Dubai – ever the trading hub – have seen excellent business. But certainly there must be many OEM machines operating in Iran which are in need of a good overhaul with the less common parts. Closer to home, there may also be indirect effects. The removal of sanctions could yet see more oil flood into the market, with Iran saying that it will return to ramping up production as soon as possible now that restrictions have been lifted. While the sanctions were in place it was only able to sell oil to a handful of nations, including China and India. While the lower price per barrel of oil seems to be here to stay, any further drop will drastically impact on the already reeling earnings of the Gulf states, to varying degrees (oil revenues only make up a fraction of Dubai’s budget, for example). The price of oil is closely watched by industry insiders as a barometer of health for the construction industry, since the government budgets play such a big role in the constitution of the construction sector in the Gulf. If the price of oil manages to climb, or even remain steady, then money will more readily be released for projects; if it drops any further, then projects may come to a halt - or continue at a snail’s pace with money released at a slower pace. Nevertheless, it’s too early at this stage to guess what Iran’s moves will be like in the oil market a year or more into the lifting of the sanctions, and how the price of oil will behave - but it’s certainly a contingent factor when it comes to business forecasting in the region.

hen you are making a world-class truck you need to follow world-class processes. This truism is of course not lost on illustrious Italian truck maker Iveco – and their reputation for excellence is testimony to how much pride they take in building their range of heavy vehicles. So, while the CNH Industrial group company flew down a posse of the world’s automotive and heavy equipment press to its Madrid plant last month for the launch its new Stralis heavy truck, it could not resist showing off its real pride and joy – the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) silver medal-winning factory that also produces this year’s International Truck of the Year, the Eurocargo, as well as the heavyduty and off-road Trakker range along with the Daily delivery van. World Class Manufacturing is of course the Japanese concept of total plant perfection, which Iveco’s parent company, CNH Industrial, applies across its manufacturing operations and facilities. Once Iveco decided on the Madrid plant as a production centre for the new Stralis launched last month, it was quickly brought up to WCM levels in preparation for making the new model. One of the main features of the WCM programme is the direct

relationship between an activity or project and its cost benefits. Continuous improvement initiatives are driven by the Cost Deployment pillar, which accurately identifies all plant waste and loss, guides the corporate functions tasked with containing and eliminating the sources of waste, evaluates project feasibility, and assesses and certifies the results achieved by carefully monitoring specific performance indicators. “The widespread use of WCM principles allows the entire company to share a common culture based on efficient processes and on a language universally recognised across all plants and countries in which CNH Industrial operates,” says Gianalberto Lupi, head of Iveco’s heavy business line. “WCM leverages knowledge development through employee participation, through which knowledge generated anywhere in a plant can be codified and subsequently incorporated into new products, new services, and new ways of working,” adds product director Clement Chandon.

At the Madrid factory, this new way of working involves a staff strength of 2,600 people working in two daily shifts, producing 132 Stralis units every day. A Stralis takes 45 hours to build, 10 out of which are spent in checking the quality of various components and stages of assembly at the 11 quality gates spread out at strategic areas on the factory floor, usually after the completion of a particular stage of assembly. As a testament to Iveco’s dedication to quality, no part of a product is left unchecked and the truck is tested under rigorous quality parameters. This quality-first mindset also extends down to the lowest rung of the factory workers. Each employee can give 20 suggestions and ideas per year for processes and items that they feel can be improved upon. The ideas are encouraged by awarding special prizes to the best suggestions at the end of the year in a practice that enables WCM principles to percolate to all levels of the organisation. Apart from the Stralis, the factory also makes the Trakker heavy-duty off-road truck,

which is particularly popular in the Middle East. The same WCM principles and attention to quality are followed for the Trakker as well, which makes Iveco confident about its performance in the challenging conditions of the region. In December last year, Iveco and its UAE distributor, Saeed Mohammed Al Ghandi & Sons, launched the Trakker EuroTronic in the UAE. The truck features the advanced EuroTronic automated gearbox, which lowers operating costs and increases comfort. The Trakker was also extended to Saudi Arabia in April this year when Iveco joined hands with regional machinery distribution powerhouse, FAMCO, to make its range available in the kingdom. In October last year, Iveco supplied 207 Trakker trucks to Oman’s Galfar Engineering and Contracting through its dealer in the sultanate in one of the biggest truck deals ever in the Middle East. Among the Trakker’s variants, the EuroTronic is accompanied by the AD380 models in different configurations: tipper, compactor, water tanker and mixer. The Trakker offers off-road heavy hauling with low operating costs and high durability. Designed to meet customers’ needs for strength and reliability in extreme off-road missions, it has a Gross Vehicle Weight ranging from 18 to 41t and Gross Combination Weight up to 70t. The range includes the Cursor 13 engines and the Hi-Land and Hi-Track cabins. Rigid versions come in configurations from 4x2 to 8x8 with 380 to 440hp. Tractor versions are from 4x2 to 6x6 configurations with 380 to 440hp of power.

NEW RELEASES JULY 2016

Manitowoc introduces new Potain HuP 32-27 Why get it? Telescoping masT for increased heighT and greaTer luffing capabiliTy of jib Global equipment major Manitowoc recently introduced the latest addition to the line-up of Hup cranes by its Potain brand of tower cranes. First revealed at the triennial Bauma machinery show in Munich this year, the Hup 32-27 is being released to the world market now, while also being exhibited at various equipment shows around the world. The Hup 32-27 has an overall maximum

lifting capacity of 4t while the heaviest weight it can lift at its jib end, which is 32m in length, is 1t. The crane can also attain an impressive 40m of maximum height under hook. Further versatility is delivered through the jib’s luffing capability with a choice of three raised positions at inclinations of 10, 20 and 30 degrees, in addition to the horizontal position. The crane has an adjustable two-section mast that has a third section contained within the second. This design allows the third mast section to be telescoped out, boosting its working height by 27m. When combined with the jib’s luffing capability, the maximum inclination angle allows the highest potential under-hook height of 40m. According to Manitowoc, the new Potain Hup 32-27 self-erecting crane can help operators get more jobs done through higher crane utilisation, creating a higher return on their crane investment. The company claims the maximum

reach in its class for the Hup 32-27, which it says, makes for class-leading performance. There are multiple integrated configurations for various jobsite needs and Potain’s new Smart Set-up software makes for simplified crane erection using the exclusive Potain remote control. The software is the exclusive Potain solution providing an intuitive user interface to simplify folding and unfolding the Hup 32-27 through step-by-step directions clearly visible on the remote control screen. epending on who you ask, the skid-steer loader – that compact and ubiquitous machine you see on probably every construction site – is either the largest selling category of machinery in the Middle East or at least in the top three. For manufacturers with a substantial presence in the compact machinery segment, such as Bobcat and Case, the skid-steer is the biggest cash cow. And, according to research available at Case, the segment comprises almost 25% of the GCC machinery market, forming almost half the market when combined with the excavator segment. The skid-steer is also an important segment for manufacturers usually associated with larger machines, such as Caterpillar and Volvo CE. Known for its compact machinery, Bobcat’s range of skid-steer loaders is among the most popular on the market. The company achieved a unique feat earlier this year of crossing the one million mark in skid-steers sold. “It’s not easy to find a manufacturer who can claim to have produced a million pieces of any single equipment in any segment of the construction machinery business,” says Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and Africa for Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment. “This is a milestone both for us and the industry.” Rhayem points out that the brand is near-synonymous with the machine, especially in the Middle East. “In our region when you say Bobcat, you actually mean a skid-steer loader. This is what we are famous for and it is our largest selling and most important category by far by both volumes and reputation,” he says. Anecdotal evidence Narrating an anecdote to drive home his point, Rhayem says: “I was speaking with someone from the competition recently and he told me a customer came to his workshop and asked, ‘Did you finish repairing my Bobcat?’ He told the customer that it was not a Bobcat but another brand, but the customer still insisted on calling

his skid-steer a Bobcat even though it was made by another company.” This recognition is due to the wide customer base that the skid-steer loader enjoys, Rhayem feels. “Today there are three or four main activities related to the skid-steer loader. The first one is definitely construction but cleaning and maintenance is a close second. To give an example of the importance of the skid-steer in cleaning, last year we won a big tender of 150 units in Saudi Arabia just to clean Mecca during the Haj,” he points out. “Then you have the rental sector and the owner-driver. This last category of users are small owners who have bought probably only one Bobcat, which they rent out for jobs where they can drive the machine themselves. We have a preponderance of Pathans from Pakistan as our customers in the owner-driver segment.” Rhayem says that after enjoying a stellar 2015, Bobbcat has seen a shrinkage in the market in 2016, which started late last year due to turbulence in the Saudi and Qatari economies. “But overall, we are maintaining our leading position in the market.,” he adds. Over at Case Construction Equipment, Franco Invernizzi, senior business director for Middle East and Africa, echoes similar sentiments: “You can find literally anybody buying our skid-steer loader. There are small operators with one or two machines as well as the big fleet owners. “In my experience, over the last couple of years, apart from the small-owners,

many big fleet customer have also become interested in skid-steers. This is a testimony to its importance on any kind of job.” Case has consistently been in the top-three in the region in skid-steer sales, Invernizzi adds. “The skid-steer loader is one of our oldest and best-known products. Last year our market share in the GCC was around 7-8%, which is lower than what Case is used to. This year, however, we have gained market share rapidly on the back of a couple of big skid-steers deals in the region, which were to the tune of 40 to 50 machines each. One was in Qatar and the other in Dubai. “Our most important models in the region are the SR130 and SR150. These machines offer between 50HP and 60HP and have operating loads of between 600kg and 750kg. The SR150 is our best-seller. It’s important for a machine to be simple and reliable and very flexible so that you can attach to it whatever you want – brushes, buckets or forks. This is what Case offers its skid-steer customers. When we sell a skid-steer, we are selling an entire system.” The tool carrier concept is also what drives the market for Bobcat, which is one of the pioneers of the tool carrier concept in the segment, Rhayem points out. “Today we offer more than 160 attachments for our skidsteers, which is by far the most in the market. From agriculture, landscaping and sand

blowing to construction, breaking, cleaning and trenching - we have an attachment for almost anything the customer wants to do. We even sell them to the competition. “People buy Bobcat not only for our quality and after-sales back-up but also for its second hand value – you can sell a Bobcat for up to 70% of its original value even after four years of use. But mostly they buy Bobcat because of its range of applications,” he says. Heavyweights in the game Some manufacturers known more for their large equipment are also among the leaders in the more compact skid-steer category. Two cases in point are Caterpillar and Volvo CE, whose equipment is among the most prominent of sights at regional job-sites. “The skid-steer loader is a highly important equipment offered within the GCC market. For the markets that FAMCO covers with Volvo CE – Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain - compact equipment represents around 60% of the total equipment retailed, out of which skid-steers account for another 60% of the total compact equipment market,” says Ahmad Halwani, regional general manager for construction equipment at FAMCO, the regional distribution partner of Volve CE. “The major utility factor of compact equipment such as skid-steers is their flexibility and ability to achieve many tasks that were earlier dedicated to heavy machinery. The main advantages of compact construction equipment are that it is lowcost, light-weight and easy to transport and operate. This is ideal for small to mid-sized contractors, allowing them to complete jobs efficiency at relatively lower costs,” he adds. According to Halwani, FAMCO’s main customers are owner-operators, contractors, state departments such as municipalities and the rental sector. “The rental sector is a prime purchaser of compact machines such as skidsteers. Versatility is crucial and the machines are expected to carry out numerous duties, with quick-hitch attachments speeding changeovers from tool to tool.” The Volvo CE models that FAMCO offers in the region’s skid-steer market are the MC60C, MC70C and MC115C, which offer 47.9HP, 59.9HP and 74HP respectively, with rated operating capacities of 612kg, 703kg and 1.1t. “The best features of the machines are their single loader arm designs for performance, durability and improved visibility,” Halwani says. “Side-entry cab access and versatility through attachments for a multitude of applications are some other key factors behind their success in the market.” Meanwhile, at Caterpillar, another global

heavyweight synonymous the world over with heavy equipment, the small skid-steer loader is as important as the big machines. “A Cat skid-steer loader is positioned among the top choices in the Middle East market’s compact machinery segment, particularly in the GCC. The assured value and brand image reflected by the Cat skidsteer makes it the most preferred choice among our customers,” says a spokesperson for Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, Caterpillar’s distribution partner in the region. “Cat skid-steers are utility machines with various attachments, making them a prime choice among leading general contracting companies, who use them for construction projects and landscaping purposes.” Features like a hydraulic joystick and a

single foot throttle offer optimal operation comfort in the Cat 216B3, which is the most preferred in Cat’s skid-steer loader range. It also has a high 635kg operating capacity, he adds. The features of the skid-steers AlBahar sells in the region are almost the same as those offered on the skid-steers in Cat’s global portfolio, excluding some additional features for the US and Europe markets to meet specific regulatory requirements there. “The compact machine segment in our product line is of great importance to AlBahar and our customers, as this product segment alone shapes 50% of the total Building Construction Product (BCP) industry share. Al-Bahar offers a comprehensive range of skid-steer loader equipment, some of which are the 216B3, 226B3, 246D, 236D and 262D. All Cat skid-steers are known for being easy to use and versatile,” he adds. Al-Bahar’s performance in the skid-steer loader market has been growing steadily in terms of market share and year-on-year sales growth, and the dealer plans to keep this trend continuing. “The Cat B3 series of skid-steer loaders is the recent series we have introduced and we are glad to say that it has successfully achieved its own market share, along with considerable customer trust and satisfaction,” the spokesperson says. The B-Series has many work tool options and delivers outstanding performance with a spacious, ergonomic operator station and easy-to-use pilot-operated joystick controls. A high-performance powertrain, advanced hydraulic systems and traditional Cat reliability complete the quality and efficiency package.
