Seldom has an industrial exhibition been as vital and timely for an industry as this year’s Bauma was for the global construction machinery sector. With the sector in the middle of an obvious and pronounced slump, the show breathed fresh life into the sagging spirits of machinery and equipment makers with its record number of exhibitors and visitors, and, most importantly, by its order activity that exceeded all expectations. According to figures published by the organisers, visitor numbers increased by 9%, while 63% of exhibitors were from outside Germany – the highest participation from outside the host country ever. And, as is tradition by now, the show broke its own record for total square footage to once again be the largest exhibition in the world. But the importance of the triennial event is much more than its size, especially this time. With uncertainty as the prevailing sentiment in the global construction machinery sector, manufacturers got the opportunity to suss out global markets by assessing visitor numbers and intent from various parts of the world. Among the regions that piqued sellers’ interest was the GCC, which saw a big increase in the number of visitors, hinting that upcoming events, and various railway and infrastructure projects, are keeping the wheels of the construction industry turning. One such project is Kuwait’s Jamal Abdul Nasser Street multi-level expressway
- and the country’s ministry of public works tells us about the sophisticated building techniques and advanced construction machinery being used in it. Projects such as the expressway have the power to drive demand for machinery in the region, and to fulfill this demand, the major global manufacturers are not hesitating to bring in their latest products. Construction truck maker Astra, for example, reveals in this issue that their new HD9 Euro6 truck launched at Bauma will be made available in the region straightaway, even though the Euro3 range is most popular here. In the same vein, the popular rough terrain crane sector in the region is benefitting from the entire product ranges of manufacturers such as Sany, Terex and Grove being available here. The buzz at the moment remains all about how Bauma has provided a stich in time for a flagging industry. What remains to be seen is whether it is able to save nine in the future.

First Volvo A60H haulers sold at Bauma Volvo Construction Equipment’s (Volvo CE) new A60H, the largest ever 6x6-configuration articulated hauler launched at Bauma 2016, found its first buyer at the Munich show: Burgh Plant Hire – a long-standing Volvo CE customer from South Africa. The equipment supply firm placed an order for three Volvo A60H articulated haulers, as well as one Volvo EC950E excavator, which was also unveiled at Bauma. The A60H has a 40% higher payload than its predecessor, the A40G. The sale deal was done between Stanley van der Burgh, CEO and owner of Burgh Plant Hire, and Roger O’Callaghan, CEO of Volvo CE’s southern African
dealer Babcock International Group, on day-three of Bauma 2016. Martin Lundstedt, Volvo Group CEO, Martin Weissburg, president of Volvo CE, Tomas Kuta, president of Volvo CE EMEA, and Carl Zietsman, operations manager at Burgh Plant Hire, were also present. “It feels great to be the first customer for the A60H,” Stanley van der Burgh said. “We run a huge fleet of Volvo A40s, and we don’t think there’ll be much difference except we’ll be moving more product quicker. They’ll just fall into the usual fleet with no changes.” His company owns more than 100 Volvo machines, mainly articulated haulers for coal mining operations.

Iveco’s Eurocargo 4x4 truck made its first public appearance at this year’s Bauma show in Germany. Designed for demanding off-road work, the new 15t truck is suited for construction and urban jobsites. Also offered in a 11.5t version, it has a range of wheelbases from 3,240 to 4,150 mm and runs a Tector 7 engine in 220
and 250hp variants on the 11.5t version, and 250 and 280hp variants on the 15t version. The Eurocargo 4x4 also incorporates protective features for off-road driving such as steel bumpers, retractable access steps and a specific radiator guard. The ZF six-speed manual gearboxes feature a servoshift system for easy
changes. Permanent fourwheel drive is provided by a longitudinal differential, which distributes torque between the front and rear axles. In addition, three differential locks provide traction even in low-grip conditions. Iveco also displayed a new Daily 4x4 steel 3-lateral tipper and a Trakker 6x6 3-lateral tipper at the show.

Japanese giant Sumitomo is examining opportunities in the Middle East and Asian markets after experiencing sluggish growth in the Japanese construction sector, the company said at Bauma 2016. “For the medium term, China, Middle East and the Far East will be added. Demands in these markets are estimated to keep growing for the medium term,” said Ichiro Shimada, Sumitomo’s managing director. The company also announced the addition of
two new paver models at the exhibition, with which it hopes to expand its presence in new markets: the HA60W-8, a wheeled paver with a paving width from 2.3m to 6.0m, and the HA90C-2, a tracked paver with a paving width from 2.8m to 7.5m, increasing to a maximum 9m with two bolt-on extension boxes. “By adding the pavers, we will make big progress in expanding our paver business… to the global market,” Shimada said.

24 Grove cranes for Integrated Logistics
Kuwait-based heavy lift crane rental company, Integrated Logistics Co (ILC), added 24 Grove all-terrain cranes to its fleet last month to expand its operations in the Middle East, according to a company announcement. Jassim Mustafa Boodai, chairman and managing director of ILC, said the additions will help his company serve projects in the region, particularly from the petrochemical and oil & gas industries, where high output levels require lots of support work for cranes at production facilities. Most of the new purchases will be sent to work at Kuwaiti refineries.
ILC ordered the 24 units during a visit to Grove’s factory in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The cranes in the order include 10 each of Grove’s 100t GMK4100L and 130t GMK5130-2 models, and two each of the 300t GMK6300L and 400t GMK6400 models. Grove is part of the Manitowoc group, one of the largest construction machinery manufacturers in the world. “We have achieved substantial growth in our company, and as a result we’re purchasing more Manitowoc cranes to capitalise on the growing work levels in the oil & gas market,” Boodai said.

Potain cranes build ‘twisting’ Milan tower
t
wo Potain tower cranes are building an ambitious commercial development in the centre of Milan, Italy. The two MDT 308A cranes are on-site at the Torre Hadid project, a 170m mixeduse development in the centre of Milan. The ‘twisting’ 44-floor tower is designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA). It will be one of the tallest buildings in the city and will be one of the three iconic towers – Isozaky, Hadid and Libeskind – within CityLife Milano that in total will hold approximately 10,000 people. The project on Milan’s historic former trade site, the Fiera Milano, includes an art museum, a shopping district and a pavilion. The two Potain cranes, first erected in December 2014, are climbing at a rate of 4m per month and are set to reach their final working heights of 210m towards the middle of this year. Alfio Musumeci, the building site supervisor from Italian construction company Cooperativa Muratori E Braccianti Di Carpi (CMB), explains that the company chose the MDT 308A cranes for their proven reliability and performance, which help to ensure projects run smoothly and on time. “Potain cranes are efficient tools to build a highrise structure and their ability to carry heavy loads over great distances is a key benefit,” Musumeci says. “They require minimal set-up time and feature variable frequency drives that provide optimum performance. We can rely on Potain cranes to carry out the job to the highest standard and ensure our completion dates are met.” Potain’s MDT 308A is a top-slewing tower crane that offers a maximum jib length of 70m with a tip load of 2.9t. The crane is fitted with SmartCom, an electronic control system which provides the operator and service technician with information such as how long the crane was operated for, how long the hoisting, trolley winches and slewing mechanism were operated for, and the number of brake applications for those three mechanisms. The information is displayed on an on-board computer screen.

The 8x6 version of the HD9 model, which premiered at Munich last month, is part of Astra’s Euro6 range of all-wheel traction vehicles, and the Italian manufacturer has plans to expand this range with several drive configurations. “A special feature of this truck is its loading capability,” says Michele Bianchi, marketing and product manager at Astra trucks. “Our special reinforced Kesler axles are the unique components that contribute to this.” “This is the first truck in our HD model range with the Kesler axles. The vehicle is 2.9m wide and sports the Kesler Mark 2.5 axle. This also makes the truck road legal, so it can be registered and driven on-road as well, apart from the off-road terrain that is its domain. It is only available in the 8x6 configuration now but we are going to launch a 6x6 version soon.” Bianchi adds that with Astra being the brand of the Iveco and CNH Industrial group dedicated to the heavy off-road segment, the company’s product strategy is to move up in terms of loading capability. Apart from taking the HD9 model to all global markets, Astra is also making bigger axle load capacities available across its other product ranges. “This is a Euro6 model and we expect to sell 300 units in Europe this year, but the HD9 is also available for extra-European markets. The Euro3 and Euro5 are of course part of our range and we already mount extra reinforced axles on specific Euro3 models, especially the 8x4. But now our direction is to make features such as the extra reinforced axles also available on our other product ranges,” Bianchi says. Middle East push Closer to home, the GCC market is proving encouraging for Astra. With emission norms in the region still not as stringent as in Europe, the company’s Euro3 range is the most popular here, with Astra planning to capitalise by adding more Euro3 models. Bianchi says: “When we speak about the Middle East, we speak about the Euro3 range. Our strategy is also to enlarge the range. We
of course have models from our Euro5 and Euro6 ranges available here, in addition to the Euro3. But we have our complete Euro3 range available in the region and it has been our highest-selling one over the past five years, with almost 650 units sold.” “We are a leader in our segment in Oman, with more than 20% market share. And we have seen 450 units sold, most of them last year. The focus is on the construction segment, which is the main segment for the Oman market, but the oil & gas sector was not far behind last year and saw sales of a lot of units to many new customers. The second most important country for us is Saudi Arabia, where we sold almost 100 units last year. “Oman and Saudi are the main markets for us and we are doing well in them, but we are also distributing units in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and trying to secure new distribution partnerships for Kuwait. So we feel good about our future in the Middle East.” Speaking about Astra’s success in the Omani market, Bianchi points out the importance of partnering with a good dealer: “We have an important dealer in Oman with whom we enjoy a great partnership. For the past five years, Al Fairuz Trading and Contracting has consolidated Astra’s presence in the country with its service standards and network. This is the main point of our success in Oman.” “There are several important customers in Oman at the moment. Our dealer has 180 customers in its portfolio, and the top 20 have more than 300 to 400 Astra vehicles across mixer, tipper and other applications.” While the oil & gas sector has been a steady source for Astra’s customers, especially in Saudi Arabia, Bianchi has a bearish outlook

Astra’s unique selling proposition is the strength and robustness of its trucks, which come from the use of high tensile steel and heavy-duty components.
“Oman and Saudi are the main markets for us and we are doing well in them, but we are also distributing units in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and trying to secure new distribution partnerships for Kuwait. So we feel good about our future in the Middle East.”

for sales to the sector in 2016, owing to depressed oil prices. “This situation will persist, and even the big companies are struggling to achieve their targets. For this reason we expect this segment to show a decrease in demand in the short term.” While Astra does not yet distribute its products in Qatar, its parent Iveco has a dealer in the country. “We are trying to ascertain whether we need to collaborate with other CNH brands in the distribution or to go in independently. We are still refining our strategies for distribution in Qatar and will take a call by the end of the year,” Bianchi adds. Dealership synergies Bianchi explains that Astra, Iveco and other CNH brands synergise their dealerships on occasions, but “there is no fixed strategy to either go alone as Astra or to have unified Iveco or CNH dealerships”. “We have unified dealerships in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while in Oman there are two different dealers for Astra and Iveco. We treat it on a case-by-case basis.”
He explains that though Astra makes trucks, its products differ from Iveco’s in many ways, especially in the chassis, frame and heavy-duty components. “These make Astra trucks strong and reliable because our market is the heavy duty construction, oil & gas, mining and quarrying segments where strength and reliability is very important, apart from the performance.” “The after-sales and service demands can also be quite different for Astra when compared to Iveco products, and not all dealers are equipped to provide what is necessary. So that is another factor that we think about to decide whether to have a separate Astra dealership,” Bianchi adds. Elaborating upon some of the key differences that sets Astra apart from its competitors, as well as from Iveco products, Bianchi says the strict demands of off-road usage can only be met by the most robust of components. “Torque and power are strictly defined for heavy off-road utilisation in Astra’s case, and torque at low rpm is our forte. Our vehicles need a completely different chassis and frame in terms of dimensions, stiffness and materials. We use very high-tensile strength steel with 530 megapascals of strength, and most of the structural components for Astra are specifically designed for off-roading,” he explains. Speaking about Astra’s future in the region and forays into new regional markets, Bianchi reveals that Iran is on the Italian company’s radar after sanctions were removed early this year. “At the moment we have sent feelers to prospective partners in Iran to enter the country, possibly by next year. It can develop into a key market for us.”

T
he 31st triennial Bauma show, held April 11-17 at the Messe Munchen in Munich, was a seven-day event of superlatives. The world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment, Bauma 2016 attracted around 580,000 visitors from 200 countries to the capital of Bavaria in Germany – an increase of more than 9%. After Germany, the top ten countries of origin among visitors were Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden, Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. A total of 3,423 exhibitors – 1,263 from Germany and 2,160 from elsewhere – from 58 countries presented products, developments and innovations on 605,000sqm of exhibition space, with which the show broke its own record set last year for the biggest exhibition in the world. Exhibitors from outside Germany accounted for 63% of the total, higher than ever before. “The response from the participants this year was amazing. The visitors at Bauma always come looking to invest, but this year the exhibitors’ order books filled up much faster than expected. Many exhibitors are talking about a record level of demand at Bauma 2016. And that is an extremely positive sign in this current uncertain climate,” says Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO of Messe München. Johann Sailer, chairman of the VDMA Association for Construction Machinery and Building Material Machines, agrees: “Bauma is the ideal platform for presenting innovative new developments, because it has a big impact in the industry around the world. Again in 2016, the world’s largest show of construction machinery delivered impetus for further growth in our sector.” As well as breaking records in terms of exhibitor and visitor numbers and exhibition space, Bauma 2016 was also a great place for filling the order books. Stefan Heissler, a member of the Board of Directors of Liebherr-International AG, confirms: “Bauma 2016 was a tremendous success for Liebherr. We received many orders from a wide variety of different markets. In some segments our expectations were even exceeded.” For Michael Heidemann, vice-chairman of the Management Board of Zeppelin, “Bauma 2016 has once again shown everyone that it does indeed boost innovation and it has lived up to

Middle East interest The number of visitors from the Middle East also followed the general growth trend to record a rise over previous years. The GCC especially surprised many exhibitors by the number of visitors it contributed to the show. Speaking about the interest from the Middle East, Shahir El Essawy, business director for Hub South (Middle East & Africa) at Volvo Construction Equipment – Sales Region EMEA, says: “The event this year far exceeded expectations and we had more visitors from GCC countries to the Volvo stands than any other year. The outdoor demo area was also
a huge hit and was very much appreciated by all visitors. Many customers from GCC countries showed a lot of interest in our products and services, especially our newly launched products at Bauma 2016.” Commenting on the significance of Bauma for Volvo CE, he adds: “Bauma allows us to demonstrate the strength of the Volvo Group to thousands of customers – how our highly efficient and productive machines from Volvo CE and reliable on-road construction trucks from Volvo Trucks can work together in a customer’s operations, as well as the powerful and environmentally-conscious engines from Volvo Penta. “ “Volvo CE’s sister brands, SDLG and Terex Trucks, also exhibited at Bauma this year, showcasing the Volvo Group’s capabilities in the value construction equipment and light mining segments.” For Volvo CE, the main product launches at the show were the Volvo A60H articulated hauler and the Volvo EC950E excavator. Both models represent new size classes for Volvo CE, and the A60H is the largest true articulated hauler ever on the market. “We are bringing both new machines to the GCC through Famco, our distribution partner in the region,” El Essawy adds. “The Volvo EC950E is the perfect size to load the new hauler and we are confident of its success, given the proven track record of the Volvo

We took some important orders on these new heavyweight models, so we are off to a good start.” Meanwhile, other entities from the GCC were also checking out the market at Bauma for new launches and products to bring to their local markets. Among them was crane and work platform rental specialist Johnson Arabia, whose team was at Bauma to get a view of the latest developments in the sector and window shop for new machinery. “Attending Bauma is a must in our line of business, because this is where we get an overview of the industry every three years and get to know about the latest trends, technologies and products,” a spokesperson for the company says. “At Bauma 2016, we again made an assessment of where the industry stands and spotted some new products that would be great additions to our Middle East fleet, such as the Demag crane line reintroduced by Terex. We will base our future fleet expansion decisions based on the knowledge we have gathered at the show.” Other manufacturers echoed Volvo CE’s sentiments about the importance of the show and their success in it. Alexander Schwörer, managing director of Peri, says: “For us, Bauma 2016 was a tremendous success. We are very satisfied with the response and with the high quality of the trade visitors.” Also impressed was Frank W Reschke, sales director and member of the Management Board of Masa: “We are very happy with how the show went. Right from day one, we were welcoming a constant stream of guests from all over the world at our booth. The quality of the trade audience is first-rate, as it was three years ago, and we had some excellent business talks.” Bauma is also the number one platform for exhibiting companies to premier their innovations to a global trade audience. John L. Garrison, CEO & president of Terex Corporation, emphasises: “Every three years, Bauma offers us the unique opportunity to meet with customers from around the world. As the largest trade show in our industry, the 31st edition this year was a good opportunity to showcase new products and services.” Masatoshi Morishita, managing director & CEO at Komatsu Europe, sums it up neatly when he says: “We made use of the attention Bauma 2016 attracted to present our innovations. This event is a milestone for the industry.” “It’s not only Komatsu that tries to get certain machines ready in time for Bauma. This trade show really drives the entire industry forward.”

hen it comes to building or upgrading ¬road infrastructure in already busy and congested urban environments, engineers everywhere agree that the word “challenging” only begins to describe such projects. Not only does the planning need to be spot on and the execution faultless despite the constraints, heavy reliance must also be placed on specialised machinery, whose indispensability in seeing the work through to completion rises in direct proportion to the difficulty of the task. Kuwait has recently embarked on such a challenging project, one that seeks to upgrade and add to existing road infrastructure on Jamal Abdul Nasser Street, a busy central area of Kuwait City. The Jamal Abdul Nasser Street Development Project is a strategic undertaking by Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works (MPW) as part of its continuing plans to further enhance the existing infrastructure and transportation network of the country. The road project aims to transform Jamal Abdul Nasser Street into an internationally standardised, multi-level expressway extending for about 11km from Jahra Gate Roundabout – a landmark in central Kuwait City – to the Grenada area in the western region of Kuwait. According to the ministry, the total cost of the project is KD 242.4 million ($803 million), which includes a multi-level elevated highway along with the upgrading and reconstruction of the existing service roads to provide additional traffic lanes with new, enhanced or relocated utilities infrastructure. Handling the project is the joint venture of Pace and Louis Berger, which has been commissioned by the ministry to carry out the design and oversee the implementation of the project. Right at the outset, the ministry outlined six clear objectives for the
project. First was segregation of bypass traffic and local traffic flow via elevated highways. Next was increasing highway capacity to minimise traffic congestion. Improving road facilities and services was another key objective, as was making the project future proof by building in redundant capacity and service capability to meet demands that may arise with time. The final concerns were safety-related, seeking to reduce traffic accidents and improve overall road safety standards. “In both its design and construction stages, the project stands as an engineering marvel. Its calibre can be measured by the various advanced and large-scale techniques and structural propositions employed to erect bridges, making it rank as one of the largest multi-level road projects in the world,” says Ahmed Suleiman Al Hassan, assistant undersecretary of the Roads Engineering Sector at the MPW, Kuwait. Many establishments on the Jamal Abdul Nasser highway will benefit from the upgraded infrastructure. Among these are educational institutions, medical facilities and governmental departments, such as the grand campus of Kuwait University, the Shuweikh Medical Zone and the offices of the Ministries of defence and Trade. Most importantly, the upgraded road with enhanced capacity will also benefit the Shuweikh port zone, which stretches alongside part of it.
32
SITE VISIT M AY 2016
“Undertaking this five-phase project in such a busy metropolis like Kuwait City, along with the fact that it is upgrading an existing and already very busy road, required very intricate methods of construction that would not impede or disrupt the traffic flow or disturb the dynamics between the public and the environment,” says Mahmoud Ramadan, A project engineer representing MPW on the site. A series of sophisticated large-scale operations are being used to execute the project, requiring the latest innovations in bridge construction. This entails the construction of a stretch of over 18.6km of super elevated precast segmental viaducts and ramps. These viaducts will be built by precast segmental techniques, with the segments assembled into a monolithic structure by means of post-tensioned steel tendons, linking them between the pier diaphragms. Dr John Faulkner, project engineer representing the consultant’s JV, says: “All the segments will be delivered from the precast yard (PCY) to the erection sites by means of low-bed trailers travelling on the existing road network during periods of reduced traffic flow. The precast yard is located alongside Doha Motorway, towards the west of Kuwait City, about 12km from the project.” “The pre-casting operation takes place
24 hours per day and the PCY is equipped with large-scale pre-cast machinery, such as mould production frames, heavy gantries, electric generators, water tanks and arrangements for curing. The yard itself occupies a total area of 130,000sqm apart from the offices, laboratory and concrete batching plants.” Process and equipment The first stage of segment casting starts in the steel reinforcement cutting zone, where steel bars are cut, bent and shaped to form the segment’s reinforcement as per the structural designs. The use of the latest hightech computer and CAD technology enables the reinforcement to be formed quickly and accurately to the required shapes. Afterwards, a total of 11 overhead electrically operated cranes lift and move the reinforcement cages into the segment moulds in order to complete the casting and pre-stressing process. Longitudinal and transverse pre-stressing ducts are inserted prior to concrete pouring to allow insertion of high-tensile steel strands for subsequent post-tensioning purposes. A total of four gantry cranes, two each of 100t and 140t, mobilise the precast segments from the production bay up to the storage yard and finally load them on low-bed trailers for delivery to construction sites. “The precast yard provides a bigger work
“In both its design and construction stages, the project stands as an engineering marvel. Its calibre can be measured by the various advanced and large-scale techniques and structural propositions employed to erect bridges, making it rank as one of the largest multilevel road projects in the world”

space and a suitable environment for quality assurance of the segments with regard to consistency, strength requirements and durability. Other advantages also include easy geometry control and guaranteeing accuracy of future construction and better quality control,” says Ramadan. The project entails the construction of an elevated segmental mainline viaduct extending for about 10km straight along Jamal Abdul Nasser Street. The precast segments for the viaduct are received from the precast yard and mobilised vertically by a winch crane mounted on an 850t launching gantry, which pre-assembles all of the segments into one span in a technique commonly referred to as span-by-span. A total of three interchanges and seven entry-exit ramps across the mainline viaduct add up to around 10km of additional short and long segmental viaducts. Their segments are lifted individually and attached to the previously installed segment on either side of the pier using the balanced cantilever method. Ramadan elaborates: “All activities related to the erection of concrete precast segments are carried out along the viaduct’s alignment. The viaduct superstructure is, for the most part, made up of continuous precast, prestressed, segmental spans ranging from 26m to 108m.” “Each of the 8,600 segments in this project
33
is unique and meticulously designed using 3D models, such that each will fit into the exact position at the site. The segments are raised upwards to their required positions to form the complete span between two consecutive piers.” Explaining the technical details behind the construction, he adds that this can be accomplished by two methods of erection – span-by-span and balanced cantilever. The first will be used to build the 8.6km main viaduct line, where the span arrangements are in a multiple precast segmental box and measure 34m to 57m. In this method, all segments of a span are lifted in their correct sequence and suspended temporarily by means of an overhead launching girder, then epoxy glued together, followed by stressing to form a continuous unit. The entire span is then released from the girder to the pier diaphragm by means of closure stitch. After the erection of each span, the launching girder moves to the next. The main structure is made by two to four parallel single box girders connected in pairs with slab closure pours. In the balanced cantilever method, precast segmental box shorts for the 10km ramps span from 26m to 61m. The span is built by beginning at the pier and proceeding outwards mid-span equally on each side of the pier. At mid-span there is a cast-inplace closure joint, either with the adjacent balanced cantilever or with the end span. Among the equipment required for these methods is a lifting winch equipped with a spreader beam to pick up the segment and travel with it along the main girder. This winch is fixed onto launching gantries, two of which are being used in the project. Each launching gantry further uses other pieces of equipment during the erection of the spans. Apart from compressors and generators for powering the winches, the
equipment includes forklifts, Man lifts and high-capacity spreader beams with slings and chains. Trailers and low-bed trucks bring the girders from the yard and position them under the winches, from where they can be picked up. Where launching gantires cannot be used, mobile cranes have found extensive use to lift pier segments and end spans of the project into place.
Construction sequence Explaining the two methods of erecting the spans, Faulkner says that in the span-byspan method, the gantry is side-shifted on the box alignment of the first section of the carriageway to be erected. Side-shift is the movement of the launching truss from one carriageway to the next by sliding sideways on the support cross-beams. The hoisting winch is then connected to the first segment, which is lifted onto the main girder and released in place. This process then repeats for all the sections of the bridge, and the position of the segments is adjusted by using the winch trolley and spreader beams. Two hoisted segments are joined together by means of epoxy, with the winch trolley used to bring them together at the joint and hold them in place. The spreader beams are
used to adjust the grade and cross fall of the segments, and temporary PT bars are stressed to close the joints. The joints are then closed and the gantries slide forward for the next segment. The balanced cantilever method, Faulkner explains, starts with assembling the first lifting frame on the deck, followed by erecting the second typical segment of the cantilever. The segment is glued to the adjacent one using epoxy and temporary pre-stressing. The lifting frame is then moved to the cantilever tip and the second lifting frame is assembled on the deck. Permanent cantilever tendons are Installed and stressed, and the segments are then erected in pairs, one for each side of the cantilever, using the two lifting frames. The lifting frame in the mobile configuration is designed to travel along the cantilever deck while lifting a segment. This feature is being used at the project when the area below the tip of a cantilever is not accessible to the low-bed trailer delivering the segments. When all segments of one cantilever have been erected, the lifting frames are dismantled and reassembled on the next pier. “At places in the project where impediments in the surroundings do not make the use of the lifting frames possible or make it inconvenient to lift and erect the cantilever segments, the segments are being erected by means of a mobile crane, apart of course from the pier segments and endspan segments, which are always erected by crane,” Faulkner adds. The mobile cranes used for this purpose are a mix of heavy duty rough terrain, allterrain and crawler cranes, all equipped with spreader beams in order to lift the segments and adjust them according to their final super-elevation and longitudinal slope.

Terex launches Tc85 compacT excavaTor Why get it? Short radiuS tail Swing and boom offSet for high manoeuvrability in tight job SiteS The new Terex TC85 compact crawler excavator is built for demanding excavation jobs and space-restrictive trenching work, featuring an optimal combination of a short radius tail-swing and a Knickmatic boom offset that allows operators to dig alongside the machine’s own tracks. Weighing 8,200kg, the TC85 boasts bucket capacities from 87 to 305l, a dig depth of 4.52m, a bucket digging force of 53,200N and a reach of 7.72m. This new model’s deep digging capability makes it an ideal machine for
landscaping, general construction, water and sewer, electric and utility, as well as municipal applications. Three track options are available: rubber (standard), steel and steel with rubber pads, allowing contractors to match their machine to their applications. Featuring a Tier 4 Final 75-hp (55.4 kW) 2.9L Deutz diesel engine with 221 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, the new TC85 excavator meets emissions requirements through a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), which serves as a catalytic converter. This translates to a reduced maintenance exhaust system as there is no need for regeneration or to inject diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Auto engine stop comes standard, which helps save fuel. The TC85 has a dual-circuit hydraulics system with load-independent flow distribution (LUDV) to allow all functions to be controlled simultaneously and independently of each other. The structural design also complements the efficiency of its hydraulic systems. For example, the TC85 is designed with a low center of gravity so that the weight is evenly distributed. A balanced machine enables the operator to quickly change operation speed without the machine bouncing around.
The excavator can work closely alongside walls and other existing infrastructures thanks to its Knickmatic boom. The articulated joint on the boom allows the machine to be moved to either side at full digging depth. With an articulation angle up to 120 degrees in total, work can be carried out on very narrow construction sites, alongside walls, hedgerows and on sloping terrain. The Knickmatic cylinder is internally located, protecting against collision damage. Two boom options are available: monobloc (standard) and circular (optional). The first offers a staggered boom set-up to give the excavator extra dumping height, range and digging depth. The circular boom is ideal for limited access jobsites, such as inner city construction sites, where space is constrained. SPECIFICATIONS

sakai sW654series roller Why get it? enhanCed fuel eConomy and Sakai’S CuStom featureS Sakai introduced its upgraded SW654series vibratory tandem roller at the World of Asphalt 2016 earlier this year to provide the market with machines for small to large tonnage jobs requiring oscillation. The range features a Kubota 3.3l diesel engine rated at 73bhp with Tier 4 emissions compliance and ECO Compaction Mode (ECM) reduces fuel consumption by up to 37%, Sakai claims. General paving applications for the single eccentric shaft SW654 and SW654B and twin-eccentric shaft SW654ND oscillating rollers include widening of roadways to compaction of shoulders and ramps to parking lots and driveways. The “B” model features a split drum best suited to operating in tight corners without pushing or shoving material. Vibratory compaction by the 58-inchwide, 42-inch-diameter drums is achieved at 3,000vpm in low frequency or 4,000vpm in high frequency for fast, efficient achievement of specified density targets. The range also has Sakai’s customdesigned shock isolators that reduce the transmission of vibration back to the operator and critical machine components, a super-heavy-duty articulating and oscillating centre hitch design for superior chassis stability and neutralactivated dynamic hydrostatic braking.
JCB says its compact 525-60 Hi-Viz loader is designed to offer the performance of a fullsize telehandler within a compact footprint. The machine features a side engine mount, which permits a low boom pivot point for stability and good visibility to the front wheels, the rear, across the boom and to the forks. All boom functions are controlled by a single servo lever joystick, with proportional control of two-stage boom extension. The 525-60 features three steering modes - front-wheel, all-wheel and crab steering. A limited slip differential for the front axle is offered as an option and can improve the vehicle’s traction by a wide margin over the non-optioned version. Powered by a 2.5l, 74hp (55kW) JCB fourcylinder Diesel by Kohler engine, which is certified Tier 4 Final without a DPF or DEF,

displacement design to optimise pushing power and drawbar pull. Operators will notice updates to the dozer’s hydraulics, including a larger pump for both the standard mechanical controls and a new option — electrohydraulic (EH) controls. Deere says the EH control is more responsive to the operator, adding that the feature provides a “significant” improvement to grading with a grade control system versus mechanical control. When a 700K is ordered with the EH control, it comes ready to accept the installation of the grade control system of the customer’s choice. John Deere has also added a blade shake feature to the machine, which shakes loose material from the blade at the push of a button. Two new blade sizes have also been added: a 320cm blade is now available on the XLT frame and a 366cm blade on the LGP frame. rough terrain cranes M AY 2016
Rough teRRain champions CMME looks at the evolution of the rough terrain crane market and how the model has grown in size and importance
T
he construction sector may be gloomy on depressed oil prices and sluggish global economic cues, leading to lower sales of machinery and equipment, but one piece of equipment that seems to be holding its own is the humble rough terrain crane. This versatile machine was never the glamour boy of the equipment world. Overshadowed in the lifting department by its more conspicuous counterparts, such as crawler cranes, tower cranes, knuckle boom loaders and the poster boy of the crane world – the all-terrain crane, the rough terrain has always been the silent workhorse of the bunch. Until now. A collusion of two factors have influenced a renewed demand for rough terrain cranes in the Middle East. The first is the budgetary constraints on the construction sector, which has forced machinery users to make do with less. The versatility of the rough terrain crane means that it can be used in a variety of situations and for many different tasks, reducing the need for multiple pieces of specialised equipment. The second factor is the way the rough terrain crane’s capacity has evolved. Once only
suitable for smaller loads, the latest offerings from manufacturers such as Grove, Tadano, Terex, Sany and others can now lift up to 145t, pitching them in the big league where the all-terrains used to rule. Mobility, of course, is a given with the rough terrain crane. As its name suggests, the crane is designed for use in extreme off-road terrain and comes with all-wheel drive and matched differentials as a matter of definition. Designers at most rough terrain crane manufacturers treat it as a tool, not a showroom model. For more than 50 years, this tool has been relied upon to perform in the harshest and most remote of job-sites, often in the hands of less than well-tutored operators and often with less than world-class product support. The product lines of all the leading manufacturers in the US, Japan and Europe started with small cranes of 10-18t capacity,
and the largest cranes on offer were in the 60-70t category. Now, however, the industry is offering cranes with almost the same reach, quality of control and operator environment as like-sized all-terrains in classes up to 150t. For the likes of Grove, Terex and Sany, these developments flow from the longterm process of cross-pollination and product rationalisation that stems from their acquisition of the all-terrain technology of Krupp, Demag and Faun respectively. Merits recognised Hand in hand with the availability of these larger capacity and longer reach rough terrains has come recognition of the relative merits of these cranes by customers, and with this a significant transformation in the structure of crane market demand. This is clear to see when analysing the balance between the sales of all terrains and
45
rough terrains by capacity class. In 2005, on a worldwide basis, sales of 50-65t rough terrains and all terrains were almost equal. However, sales of larger all-terrains up to 135t capacity exceeded those of rough terrains by 4:1. According to recent market estimates, however, sales of 50-65t rough terrains exceeded those of all-terrains by 7:3, while in the larger sizes up to 135t, sales of rough terrains exceeded those of all-terrains by approximately 10%. In both categories, this is the first time since larger-sized all terrains established their market presence that larger rough terrains have gained market dominance. This phenomenon also holds good for the Middle East, which enjoyed a banner year last year, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE accounting for some 70% of regional demand for rough terrains – almost 300 units. Among the market leaders is Chinese
manufacturer Sany, which is enjoying buoyant sales in the segment, as reported by Liu Biao, director of Sany Cranes International. “You may come across rough terrain cranes in the remote desert oil and gas fields, the narrow medians of highway construction sites, street corners in the downtown areas or at precast block lifting and assembling sites,” Bao says. “We are proud to say that Sany’s rough terrain cranes have become integral working units of the GCC’s social and economic development.” This regional success story for Sany is only six years old, though. “Back in 2011, we partnered with Abu Nasr General Transportation to deliver the first seven Sany rough terrain cranes to NDC’s oil fields for oil rig erection and mobilising in the remote western region of Abu Dhabi. These were the first Chinese rough terrain cranes worked in UAE’s oil and gas projects,” Bao adds.
Rough terrain cranes have found favour in the GCC’s oil & gas fields, construction sites and industrial complexes, with Sany among the preferred brands.
Well-known Western manufacturers, such as Grove and Terex, have, of course, had the first mover advantage in the Middle East’s rough terrain crane sector by virtue of their long association with the region. Part of equipment giant Manitowoc, Grove has long been a market leader in the mobile crane category. It was one of the earliest to offer rough terrain cranes on the world market and now boasts a range that extends from the 30t RT530E-2 to the new 135t RT9150E. The RT530E-2 comes with the Grove’s Crane Control System, which offers a userfriendly interface with two full graphic displays mounted vertically for better visibility and a jog dial for easier data input. Manitowoc says the RT530E-2’s Tier IV compliant 164hp QSB 6.7L Cummins diesel engine offers durability and functionality, while a new load sensing hydraulic system uses piston pumps for crane functions. The

four-section, full-power boom is formed of 100ksi steel to reduce weight while maximising structural capacities. The 135t RT9150E, on the other hand, is the highest capacity rough terrain crane currently produced by Grove, and among the highest in the segment. It features a 60m main boom, which, Manitowoc claims, is the longest of any rough-terrain crane. The crane is well suited for refineries, power plants and other large projects with heavy-duty lifting requirements in a compact space. Another globally respected manufacturer, Terex, which is also among the pioneers of rough terrain cranes, has models ranging from the 27t RT230 all the way to the 118t RT130. However its recent launches have been in the 75-100t class and these are not only notable for their technical and practical advancements but also for what they represent. The Quadstar 1100 and the Quadstar 1075L are the first rough terrain cranes to showcase what Terex describes as its “global development mindset”. The Quadstar 1100 has a 100t capacity and features a 47.2m dual mode double keel boom for optimising lifting on short or long radius. When extended, maximum tip height is 76.1m. The last word, though, belongs to Japan’s Tadano, which boasts the world’s largest rough terrain crane in its line-up. The GR1600XL-2 is a 145t three-axle machine that
utilises a six-section Tadano pin boom — the same technology the company uses in its all-terrain cranes. The crane was created particularly to serve the needs of the energy and mining sectors where, Tadano reports, longer booms and larger capacity are in demand. And it has been well-received in the Middle East’s oil & gas sector as well as in the construction of heavy infrastructure, such as railroads and

highway interchange systems. Going up to 145t was a large step up for Tadano, and for the rough terrain crane as well, which has now carved an important niche for itself in the lifting arsenal of construction, equipment and rental companies. With ever increasing capacities and its emergence as the one crane to fit multiple applications, the rough terrain crane can be expected to have a smooth future.
