As a pillar of the construction machinery sector, the importance of cranes and heavy moving equipment cannot be overemphasized. Usually the first piece of equipment to arrive at a construction site and the last to leave, the crane is often the fulcrum around which other equipment works. In this special report we take a look at some of the crane and heavy moving equipment manufacturers, as well as related service providers, who are providing the market with new models and technologies, as well as improved ways of back-up service. The equipment market may no longer in its heady days of a few years ago, but crane segments such as rough-terrains, all-terrains and tower cranes are doing relatively well, as a spate of new orders over the past 12 months can testify. With urgency returning to projects in the region, such as for Dubai’s Expo 2020, the future is full of hope, say crane manufacturers and service providers, while revealing the region’s penchant for specific crane models. Indeed, more and more of these towering sentinels of the construction industry are becoming markers of activity.

SECTOR OVERVIEW LIF T AND MOVE REP ORT 2017

Scaling upwardS

With its oWn features and preferences, the Middle east’s crane sector is taking the Market conditions in its stride as it continues to Make steady progress

T

he Middle East crane and lifting products market has shown a steady bias over the years towards tower cranes and roughterrain cranes (RTC). Unsurprisingly so. With the breakneck pace of tower block construction that cities in the region have witnessed for the last several years, tower cranes manufacturers have found possibly their best global market in the GCC. Whether or not the rumour of a few years ago was true that more than 30% of the world’s tower crane supply was to be found in the UAE alone, the spindly spires of these cranes remain an ubiquitous sight in skylines around the region. Another obvious choice for the region is the roughterrain crane. The terrain in the Middle East, with its deserts and rocks, is ideal territory for the RTC, and it’s no wonder that most manufacturers and dealers report the RTCs outselling the all-terrains in the region. RTCs are expected to work long hours on job-

sites, whether civil construction, infrastructure, petrochemical plants or industrial. The nature of the RTC as a job-site work tool means that ownership or at least operation is typically concentrated with end users, Manitowoc’s David Semple, senior vice president for mobile cranes Middle East and Asia Pacific, told CMME in an earlier conversation. By comparison, while ownership of allterrain cranes is around 80-90% by rental companies, for rough-terrains ownership by end users is 40-50%. “The trend is clearly going towards rentals, but due to the purpose of the crane – as a tool – many contractors will continue to own their fleet of RTCs, or at least keep a core fleet

they own, with rental supplementing their fleet during peaks,” explained Semple. Company ownership and the workhorse nature of rough terrains means they have to be a “simplier and sturdier product”, he says. “You need to be able to run these machines with very simple maintenance, and with very simple training for the operator and maintenance teams.” Rise of the tower cranes Over in the tower crane business, “the GCC is actually one of the bright spots in the global tower crane sector”, says an executive from Abu Dhabi-based NFT Specialised in Tower Cranes, the biggest Potain dealer in the world. Dubai and Doha are driving the

3

regional market, he says, while Abu Dhabi seems to have suddenly lost appetite for big construction projects and consequently for tower cranes. However, Dubai has enough work to keep everyone busy. “We are really looking forward to the new developments and we’ve already started working there, having supplied cranes for projects related to the Expo 2020, where the Al Futtaim Group recently won a major construction contract and have three years to build the project,” NFT says. Another tower crane specialist, Italian manufacturer Raimondi, is cautiously optimistic about the region. The brand is now owned by Dubai-based KBW Investments,

giving it synergies within the KBW group to fall back on, which, technical director Domenico Ciano feels, has led to Raimondi’s recent success in the region that he would like to build on. To do that, however, Raimondi first needs to deal with what Ciano thinks are some of the traditional aspects of the GCC market – lack of awareness, price-sensitivity and difficulty of access. “For Raimondi, as a European manufacturer, you could say that a challenge is the lack of education about our quality versus that of other manufacturers. For the extremely price-conscious, more education on quality, durability, and real investment value is needed. If you think you’re saving money by opting for a ‘budget’ model with a vague manufacturing history, get in touch with Raimondi and we’re happy to tell you why our heavy lifting machinery is the better route.” Going by Raimondi’s performance figures and forecasts, many customers also seem to agree with that ‘better route’. The Italians had significant success last year, delivering 35 cranes in the Middle East and rounding of the year, the forecast is for more sales. Meanwhile, other crane categories are also doing reasonably well, especially all-terrain cranes, which are a staple of the oil & gas industry. A recent spate of ATC orders in the region has come from lifting solutions and equipment suppliers. The main beneficiary has been Terex Cranes, especially its popular Demag brand. Starting from late 2015 to date, more than 60 orders for Demag ATCs have been placed by companies in the region, with Kuwait’s Integrated Logistics, a well-known crane equipment supplier to the region’s oilfields, leading the way. On the whole, the Middle East’s crane sector is weathering the economic storm well and is ramping up for an anticipated surge in business in the future.

XCMG LIF T AND MOVE REP ORT 2017

ReAching high

Chinese giant XCMg is setting lofty standards in produCts and serviCes as it Consolidates its position aMong the top Crane brands in the world

A

fter a sharp shower, the temperature in Jilin, northeastern China, has dropped to zero degrees even in October, and it seems that winter is around the corner. But Yu Fengjiang who has engaged in the crane business for many years, is apparently unconcerned at the chilly weather, because at this time, his business is in the prosperous period. On the cusp of China’s National Day, Yu is busy leading his fleet of cranes to construction sites. This time, the project is a ceiling installation task at a gas station in Meihekou City. It is a piece of cake, he says. But for the construction party, this is the most complex part. At 9am, the fleet arrives at the construction site, which has attracted a large number of passers-by. Six XCMG cranes working together will surely draw attention. Among the cranes there is a QY50KA, and five other 25K series models. After studying the construction

site and communicating with the construction party, Yu quickly orders the cranes into place. Choosing a spot, extending the crane legs and hanging the slings, the preparation work is ready in a few minutes. Under Yu’s unified command, the six cranes work together and soon finish the ceiling installation. After work, when people are astonished at the efficiency, Yu says what matters is not his ability, but his experience. This kind of group hoisting work, especially for largescale installation construction, is very difficult, he says. The key is to choose the appropriate lifting points to ensure and maintain balance during lifting and adhere to the requirements of

cranes. Since the purchase of his first XCMG crane, he has been on the road to success, he adds. Over the years, XCMG’s K crane series has supported the rise of his business. And now that he is optimistic about his future business, Yu is considering whether his current equipment can meet his future needs. Although he likes the K crane series very much, XCMG’s G generation is also on his radar as he looks to keep pace with the times and expand his business with the new generation G series products. And it’s not just in XCMG’s home base of China. Yu’s story is one that is repeating itself the world over for XCMG, whether in other parts of Asia, in North America, Africa,

5

Europe or even in the Middle East. For us in this part of the world, XCMG cranes are a permanent fixture of the lifting landscape - in the form of mobile cranes, tower cranes and crawlers. While fleets of the Chinese crane specialist’s products are seen running about at various job sites in the Middle East, one of the most prominent jobs it has undertaken in the region lately is at a sports facility under construction in Doha, Qatar. An XCMG QUY100 crawler crane was recently involved in building ancillary facilities for the preparation of a football World Cup venue in Doha, delivering what the manufacturer calls “China power” to the region. With the searing temperatures in Qatar,

The top Chinese manufacturer and one of the leading global brands, XCMG is present in all crane categories, from mobile ones to giant crawlers.

where the desert climate features scorching heat, dryness, strong wind and dust, the XCMG crawler crane took all the negative factors in its stride while repeatedly lifting 25t excavators in and out of a 60m deep cavity which was being excavated to construct a water storage pit. It successfully accomplished all tasks and won praise from the client for its stable and reliable performance, becoming a bright spot in the construction blueprint for the 2022 World Cup venue. Wide range And it’s not only in crawlers that XCMG has made its brand well known. The Chinese heavyweight is known just as

well, if not more, for its mobile cranes, comprising all-terrain models from 180t to 1200t, rough-terrain cranes from 25t to 200t, a range of truckmounted cranes with various lifting capacities, as well as tower cranes and crawler cranes for heavy-duty lifts. XCMG says it achieves the high standards of its products through its next wave process of Global Intelligent Manufacturing, saving time and cost in the process as it delivers greater quality. This entails a Customer-to-Manufactory (C2M) business model replacing traditional manual production lines and adopting intelligent manufacturing technologies. Intelligent manufacturing is more than replacing human workers. It is computers learning algorithms and making decentralised decisions to automated machines. Inside XCMG’s smart factories, the full adoption of MES (Manufacturing Execution System) can be seen throughout the production lines. With all key computerised facilities connected to the XCMG IoT system, the MES acts as the brain of the factory, mastering every stage in the production chain and allocating work tasks in real time, from logistics, inventory, production, to quality control. The end result is a superior product that holds its own anywhere in the world and has made XCMG the No.1 Chinese equipment maker as well as putting it among the top-five in the industry globally. All this is backed up by comprehensive service levels, both during and, especially, after a sale. XCMG offers sales consultation services to help customers identify the right product for their purposes and then provides financial solutions to enable the purchase. After a sale is made, the company’s global team of 5,000 service engineers take over for 24-hour service 365 days of the year, with a stated policy of offering a 15-minute response time, a parts delivery guarantee of within 72 hours and completion of most jobs inside 24 hours.

O

ne of the most well-recognised global crane manufacturers, Terex Cranes has become a benchmark for quality and innovation in the industry. Enjoying an envied level of brand equity in the construction and lifting market of perhaps every country in the world, the company has become legendary for its products. After all, it owns the Demag brand of mobile and crawler cranes, besides the Terex Cranes brand. It’s not just market-leading products, however, that have garnered Terex Cranes its enviable worldwide reputation over the years. In fact, that reputation is built as much on after-sales service as on wowing customers with the right product mix. In the Middle East, Terex Cranes carries forward its legacy of customer-centric back-up service from its regional base in Dubai, where its sales team is currently headed by Joerg Mueller, senior sales manager and team leader. Terex Cranes’ service team currently has five

service technicians and one service supervisor in Dubai, serving the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and the rest of the region. Another team of three is based in Saudi Arabia with one supervisor. The spare parts team is able to connect directly with all customers in the Middle East. Terex claims that having the same working hours, days and time zones from their regional base as the rest of the GCC allows them to offer response times that set the industry standard. Team members are from more than eight different countries – a diversity that Terex says helps find the right cultural fit with customers. The Terex Cranes Dubai office serves customers for both its brands: Terex and Demag. The

Demag brand was reintroduced at Bauma 2016 in Munich and is one of the strongest crane brands in the world, which customers associate with innovation and technology. While Terex brought back the Demag brand for all-terrain and crawler cranes, rough-terrain, truck and tower cranes are available under the Terex brand. When the Demag brand was re-introduced, many old and reactivated customers were very happy to hear that the brand with which they started their businesses was back, including customers in the Middle East. This has resulted in several orders for Demag from the region, with some of the most recent ones coming from Kuwait’s Integrated Logistics, which ordered

7 12 Demag all-terrain cranes earlier this year, and Bahrain-based Sarens NASS, which placed orders for 15 all-terrains. Also, in late 2016 and early this year, Integrated Logistics purchased of 31 more Terex cranes across its crawler, mobile and Demag lines. More recently, Kuwait-based JCT ordered five new Demag cranes, while Bothar Boring and Tunneling from Australia ordered Terex mobile cranes for its Mideast operations. New models Behind these orders is Terex’s constant innovations and new model introductions. The manufacturer recently introduced the RT90 rough terrain crane to positive feedback from the market. A compact crane that offers a boom length of 47m, it has a 3m wide chassis and features the IC-1 control system, which is something new on Terex roughterrain cranes. Terex says the feature will be available in other models of the range in the near future under the DTI badge, which stands for Demag Tech Inside. In the crawler crane sphere, Terex enjoys healthy demand, with crawlers still widely used in the Middle East for industries such

as oil & gas, infrastructure projects like bridges, power plants, and big stadiums and sporting venues. The main benefit of crawlers is that they can be mobilised rapidly, like the CC3800-1 Demag crawler, which is well known and respected in the Middle East’s heavy-lifting industry. Meanwhile, Terex puts the region’s strong demand for all-terrain cranes this year down to a combination of several factors, such as investments to bring down the age of existing

Re-introducing the much-loved Demag brand at Bauma 2016 was a masterstroke for Terex, and has led to heavy order bookings, especially from the Middle East.

fleets, a revival of spending this year after last year’s pause due to market uncertainty, the positive effects of the Demag brand’s relaunch and a high visibility for Terex in the market. Terex Cranes feels customers look for a product which stands for quality, reliability and safety, and offers a competitive pricing. And this is what it says it strives to deliver, whether in its Terex or Demag lineup of cranes. Among its recent innovations, Terex feels the IC-1 Plus crane control system is a great benefit for customers. It contributes to safety on job sites and also offers tangible financial benefits by firstly reducing the need for counterweight and thus saving transport costs, and also enabling smaller capacity cranes perform lifts that were hitherto supposed to require larger models. As customers look for complete solutions rather than just a single product, they also expect manufacturer to take care of service packages and financing solutions. Here, Terex Financial Services is a big support as it can help customers secure the best financing packages for their investment. Terex says this is in line with its dictum that customers should focus on their core business - operating the cranes.

T

here often come times in the field of construction, machinery and transport when unimaginably large and heavy objects need to be moved. At such times, conventional equipment just does not cut it and speciality, purpose-built apparatus is called for, made by specialist manufacturers – such as Goldhofer. With a long history of excellence behind it, Goldhofer has become synonymous around the globe for bringing the exacting standards of German precision engineering to the field of heavy-duty road haulage and oversized cargo transportation solutions. The company’s tradition of excellence goes back a long way. Goldhofer Aktiengesellschaft has a history that reaches all the way back to 1705. What began as a forge has developed and grown continuously over the centuries, and today this old and established company is the global market leader in its segment, with customers in over 160 countries. From facilities occupying more than 100,000sqm in the southern German towns of Memmingen and Ostfildern, more than 700 Goldhofer employees supply

customers worldwide with heavyduty modules and the accessories needed for almost every application. Technologies and products that have covered millions of miles and transported countless tons of cargo form the basis for Goldhofer – in cooperation with customers and partners – to continually develop new and customised configurations for a wide range of transport requirements. Such is the regards and reputation for excellence that Goldhofer enjoys that it was recently chosen by experts of the University of St. Gallen and the Academy of German Global Market Leaders for the 2017 Global Market Leader Champion award, which is an index created in 2015 that is used to identify companies in the DACH countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) who are world

market leaders in their respective fields and “model” companies in their sectors. Being a model in its own industry is important for Goldhofer and is something that the German specialist for transport solutions in the field of heavy haulage and oversize cargo transportation is determined to be in the future, too. And, accordingly, the company is ever vigilant about its standards and keen on bringing cutting-edge innovation in its field to its customers worldwide. In the framework of modern economic developments, the Middle East has become an enormous growth market for the haulage industry, and Goldhofer has been a part of this success story for about 50 years now. Customers from the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and many other countries have long placed their trust

11 in top-quality transport modules “made in Germany” with a very high level of vertical manufacturing, and Goldhofer has enjoyed exciting rates of growth in the region over the last few years especially. In addition to heavy-duty modules, Goldhofer produces the STZ-P series of low loader semitrailers with pendular axle technology. These vehicles are becoming increasingly popular for handling items with payloads of up to 150t. With their innovative frame design, Goldhofer’s modular THP/SL heavyduty systems – the all-rounders in the heavy-haulage industry – are a particularly robust solution. With axle loads of 45t per axle line, they have passed the test of time in practically every industry. The bogies can be combined with other modules and self-propelled transporters as well as with goosenecks and all kinds of decks. That makes them ideal for handling payloads totalling several thousand tons. As the perfect addition to its THP heavy-duty modules, Goldhofer also offers the PST/SL series of self-

propelled vehicles. The hydrostatic drive of these self-propelled heavyduty modules guarantees smooth travel at infinitely variable speeds under even the most challenging conditions. The series also includes the PST/ES-E 285, a hydraulic track width adjustment that brings an increase in lateral stability of up to 25%. Moreover, there is the PST/ES-E 385, which offers an axle load of up to 60t, an optimum payload/axle load ratio.

Goldhofer’s »Faktor 5« high girder bridge comes with a unique 5:1 payload to deadweight ratio and can be used to transport loads of up to 500t. It is ideal for moving heavy and abnormal loads like generators and transformers, including operations on challenging routes, for example across bridges and other load-sensitive structures and surfaces. In 2016, Goldhofer landed another world first in the form of its ADDRIVE, which is now available in the Middle East market as well. With its powerful switchable drive for heavy-duty axles, the system is a unique combination of the characteristics of a towed module and those of a selfpropelled modular transporter in terms of tractive force, speed and economics. The option to connect and disconnect the drive as required – for fast travel on flat terrain or additional power on a gradient – makes ADDRIVE an extremely flexible solution. In addition to ADDRIVE, Goldhofer will also be presenting more new products and solutions through the year and investing in further development work in an enthusiastic and innovative spirit. The company’s objective is to deliver first-class ideas and solutions to delight the heavyhaulage industry.

T

he GCC construction market is showing key indicators of economic development and, despite low oil prices, is forecast to grow. Major growth drivers include population increases as well as an influx in tourism from big events like Dubai Expo 2020 and other events around the region, especially big-ticket sporting extravaganzas, which are all expected to spur construction-related activity. It’s well known that time is money in the construction business. Any downtime can be troublesome and costly. And, projects can take a serious hit for each day that a revenue-generating piece of machinery is out of service waiting for a part. So, heavy equipment manufacturers must find new ways to optimise their businesses and avoid downtime, especially as competition grows. In comes aftersales service, often a sub-optimised area of business. But having a well-oiled after-sales service operation can have a real impact on productivity and be a brand differentiator. Syncron is of the view that there are some key aftersales service areas where heavy equipment organisations should focus to boost product uptime, resulting in increased efficiency, revenue, profits and customer loyalty. Managing service parts inventory has always been challenging for manufacturers and dealers. But now, with the boom in e-commerce sales and increased customer demands for quicker delivery, service parts management is creating more headaches than ever. Embracing modern solutions and new business practices can help. Adopting a dedicated service parts management solution can be a game-changer

for manufacturers. These solutions tie into existing ERP systems, allowing organisations to track parts, eliminate obsolete parts and reduce carrying costs – an estimated 25% of total inventory value. Most importantly, this ensures that the right parts are in the right place at the right time, maximising uptime and revenue. When it comes to increasing margins and remaining competitive, pricing is one of the key profit levers. However, many organisations continue to use

Excel spreadsheets and cost-plus pricing strategies to determine service parts prices, often leaving money on the table in the process. Service parts pricing should not be static. Instead, it should be the result of varous factors, from weather to time of year and location. All factors need to be linked under one umbrella to adjust pricing and glean accurate, actionable data, regardless of time, geography or currency, to ensure a company wins the service parts pricing game.

Maximise Maximise Time is money in the construction business. Any downtime – from equipment breakdowns or required maintenance – can be troublesome and costly. A well-oiled after-sales service operation has a significant impact on productivity and is a true competitive differentiator for companies in the industry.

Atlas Copco, Claas, Daimler, Hitachi, JCB, Komatsu, Kubota, Manitou, Manitowoc Cranes, Scania and Volvo CE, are just some of the world’s leading brands that already trust Syncron to optimise their after-sales service operations. Join them to deliver the right part, at the right place, at the right time, and at the right price ultimately maximising uptime and customer loyalty.

The special grooving pattern first developed more than 50 years ago by Frank LeBus has been refined over the years for quite remarkable applications. One such application is aboard The Investigator, a research vessel belonging to Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It has six winches on deck, spooling rope of up to 8.4km in length, wrapped around the drum in 27 layers. Lebus International Engineers GmbH supplied the spooling system for this drum, with precision engineered grooving embedded in the drum face to ensure continuous perfect spooling. Not all lifting equipment is as sophisticated as this, but wherever the wire rope – or synthetic rope sometimes, these days – that is spooled in multiple layers on a drum, Lebus helps smooth spooling. The benefit is not just reduced downtime; it has also been shown to increase the life of the rope by more than 500%. Wire rope is a complex machine in its own right that often seems to have a mind of its own. Its behaviour can sometimes be hard to diagnose and faults hard to identify. This is where Lebus’ expertise comes into play. Its engineers diagnose spooling problems and provide solutions. Often, there is a mismatch between the rope and the drum. Few people realise how important it is that these two elements are designed to match. The

longer the rope, and the more layers it is wrapped in, the more important this is. If you bring in a new wire rope of a different construction, diameter or length, then your winch drum is unlikely to be a perfect fit any longer. If you are lucky, it might be adequate, but the lifespan of the rope or the drum is likely to be compromised. Even with perfect spooling, the grooves on the drum face that control the behaviour of the rope will be gradually worn down eventually. Like the rope, the drum face is a wearing part. However, it is not usually necessary to get a whole new winch or even a new drum. Winch drums can be refurbished to as good as new very simply. The grooving pattern on the face of a rope drum can be supplied on a pair of half shells, also called split sleeves. When attached to the face of an old drum, they provide new guidance for rope spooling. You do not even have to send the winch back to the workshop for repairs. Sleeves can be bolted or welded into place in the field.

LEBUS’ innovation

advantages of split sleeves

• Easier to change the sleeves than the whole drum in the event of a change in application or type of rope • Less expensive to change the sleeves than the whole drum in the event of a change in application or type of rope • The lifetime of the drum increases considerably because only the sleeves need changing when the groove eventually wears out • Sleeves, large or small, can be retrofitted onto existing drums, even on site
