The Top down approach As any business leader knows, the best way to instigate change is to do it from the top down. The Green Growth Strategy element of the UAE’s Vision 2021 plan, which lays out the country’s sustainability initiatives to stimulate growth and social development, has proven that the most effective route to lowering emissions is by leading by example. The UAE is aiming for 10% of its government vehicles to go electric as progress is made to reducing CO2 emissions by 2021. Where once the big new vehicle announcements by Dubai Police related to its latest Maclaren 570S, now we have the news that the law enforcement agency is buying the BMW3i. In Sharjah, where it has recently acquired a range of 127 fuel efficient cars, the police force is also testing the hydrogen cell-powered Mirai. Throw in a huge range of other projects that are underway, there is every chance the UAE government will have done its bit to tackling vehicle emissions. It’s now up to industry to prove it can also take climate change seriously. When we set out to research and write this issue, which is focused on trailers, environmental issues weren’t necessarily close to the top of the list of topics to discuss. However whether you’re discussing payloads or the materials, it is almost impossible to avoid ending ultimately on the topics of sustainability and emissions. I was particularly impressed by SSAB’s determination to prove that it is possible to produce steel – a material that is fundamental to strong trailers – without ending up with CO2. As CEO Martin Lindqvist explains, it is attempting to change a 1,000 year old process in decades in time to meet its deadline of the latter half of the next decade. As we approach an era where, if you can’t prove your carbon credentials then you’re not going to win business, then, this could be a huge boon to haulers. When you think about trailers, you always consider their coupling to the truck. Ironically another spin-off topic this month has been partnering. MAN is teaming up with Schmitz Cargobull in the region because they feel they are stronger in combination than apart. While that is a predominantly commercial decision based on shared values on tech and safety, it is also a reminder that when you are tackling the big challenges, like the market or the environment, sometimes it’s not always best to do it yourself.

I loved reading about the news that Dubaiheadquartered consultancy AESG and global technology research organisation Tecnalia have formed a partnership for the Middle East to deliver solutions for sustainable development in the region (‘AESG in sustainability partnership with Tecnalia’, May 9). Such stories give a bit of an insight on how Dubai seems to convert these energy and sustainability ambitions into reality in such short timeframes.

There was some useful advice in your recent article (‘Wake up to truck safety: Strategies for Gulf fleet operators’, February 8). As the article points out, a tired driver behind the wheel can turn a very safe and modern truck into a dangerous or hazardous truck. But let’s not forget that not all trucks on the roads of the region are ‘very safe and modern’. It is time to take older trucks off the roads for the safety of all – and, of course, the environment. network Al Safa first to sign cargo deal with Etihad Rail TRANSPORTATION Etihad Rail has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with trucking and transportation services provider Al Safa Transport for cargo movement using an integrated railway and truck transport model. The UAE’s railways operator said that the agreement, which was signed by its CEO Faris Saif Al Mazrouei and Al
Safa Transport MD Nabeel Chaudhry, will pave the way for efficient movement of cargo using the UAE’s railway network and is an example of the opportunity that rail presents for businesses seeking environmentally sustainable and cost effective methods to meet their transportation requirements. “We are delighted to sign this MoU with Al Safa Transport, a reputable
trucking services company with a track record for safe and efficient movement of freight across the UAE,” said Al Mazrouei. “More importantly, this agreement highlights the fact that rail and trucking services are not necessarily competing services. Rather, they should be viewed as complementary services that offer the end-users choice depending on their business needs.”
Dubai-headquartered Al Safa Transport is a part of the Al Safa Group. It was formed in 1976 and its network is spread throughout the UAE and the wider region. Nabeel Chaudhry, MD of Al Safa Transport, said: “We are very pleased being the first local trucking company to be signing this MoU, and we understand there is a great potential in the future for partnering.”

Jaidah building 2S facility for iSuzu in Qatar DEAlERS
Ayman Ahmed, managing director, Jaidah Equipment has revealed that it is going to build a new 2S service centre exclusive for Isuzu in Doha’s industrial area. Speaking at Jaidah Equipment’s recently held third edition of its Isuzu customers appreciation day, Ahmed added: “Jaidah Heavy Equipment has strengthened its position in the commercial vehicle market by offering complete solutions to its customers.” The gathering welcomed Jaidah’s key customers of 2016 as well as showcased new Isuzu products and solutions. Heavy duty range of trucks from Isuzu Japan were showcased at the event, including the Isuzu CYZ 6x4 rigid chassis with cab to end of frame length of 9.1m. Jaidah and Isuzu agree this is ideal for boom trucks or concrete blocks/ bricks transportation application. The Isuzu EXR 4x2 tractor heads were also present at the event and attendees were told this vehicle combines performance, durability and ease of operation. “Tailor-made annual preventive maintenance contracts and attractive parts credit back programmes are few of the initiatives taken during last period, while keeping in mind customers’ interests,” commented Ahmed. “We would like to stress the important role of the after-sales service; keeping this in mind, we are starting to build a new 2S service centre exclusive for Isuzu in the industrial area. This will help us in enhancing after-sales support to benefit our valuable customers and aid future business relations.” Hari Subramony, Isuzu sales manager, Jaidah Heavy Equipment, thanked customers for their continuing support to Isuzu. “Isuzu flat deck pickup and NMR short chassis with customisable box are ideal as delivery vehicles carrying more goods, at the same time being able to manoeuvre through lanes and bylanes of the city. Isuzu DMax diesel pickups offer excellent fuel economy and hence customers should consider overall cost of ownership rather than just initial purchase cost.”

SSab: Meet regS and Save coStS REGUlATIONS
Global steel manufacturer, SSAB, says its high-strength EcoUpgraded steel, can help improve efficiencies and ensure manufacturers meet emission regulations. “By upgrading to steel from SSAB, during the use of the product, manufacturers will quickly be able to compensate for the CO2 emissions from the steel production process. And once the break-even point has been reached, the application will continue to deliver CO2 savings far in excess of the original CO2 debt,” says Ozgur Yalcin, SSAB’s Area Sales Manager for Middle East . During its use phase, an SSAB EcoUpgraded product will generate CO2 savings that exceed the CO2 emitted during production of the upgraded part, thereby showcasing the environmental benefits of high-strength steel. Manufacturing a product using SSAB high-strength steel ensures important characteristics such as reduced weight, improved fuel economy and/or extended lifetime – all of which are key contributors to reducing the carbon footprint of the product. The SSAB EcoUpgraded initiative will provide proof points relating to reduced CO2 emissions that will enable OEMs – and their customers – to benefit from improved environmental performance. “The Middle East region is becoming increasingly aware and regulated on emission. The ability to protect the environment and reduce emissions as a business is going to be an increasingly important aspect for SSAB and our customers,” added Yalcin.

Lincoln’s flagship full-size sedan is all-new for 2017, but it’s simultaneously become a rebirth; a reincarnation of an icon, says Lincoln: “Luxury customers look for three main attributes in their full-sized sedan; technologies that ease their everyday experience, a beautiful design that is crafted with attention to detail, and a vehicle with impressive power that makes it a pleasure to drive. The 2017 Lincoln Continental has all that in spades, emphasised by an understated, quiet luxury.” The new Lincoln Continental has been designed to be subtle while offering welcoming warmth, according to the Ford-owned luxury manufacturer. It’s an approach typified by the illuminated welcome mats that project onto the ground beneath both front doors where the driver and front passenger will step as they approach so they can avoid stepping into a puddle or debris. The door handles also glow in a hue that complements the exterior colour of the vehicle, highlighting their location, while signature LED accent lights on the headlamps and tail-maps add that sense of warmth Lincoln is aiming for. The Lincoln’s so-called E-Latch door handles have been tucked discreetly into the clean beltline and a neat buttonless keypad – which illuminates when required – on the door allows you to lock and unlock. The interior also boasts the brand’s most sensual materials ever, including Bridge of weir leather seat and door panels, a satin headliner, and shearling wool carpeting. The Lincoln-designed Perfect Position front seats have been inspired by private aircraft; and a patented comfort carrier system conforms to and supports the
body, enhancing comfort. The seats have available heating, cooling and massaging functionality, along with up to 30-way adjustability that conforms to passengers’ shapes and sizes. Additional comfort is provided by massage functions in the back and cushion. The rolling-pattern massage is designed to help reduce muscle fatigue, aches and pains by keeping muscles and blood vessels stimulated in the legs and lower back. The intuitive technology screams class and luxury, but not as loud and clear as the Revel sound system which offers a mobile concert quality listening experience comparable to what’s offered only through very high-end home audio systems. Point Source Architecture, Field Balancing Shorting Rings, auto-adjusting “Clarif-Fi” that matches source quality with the precise level of audio reconstruction, the beautifully-built and designed 13-speaker Revel audio system and a 19-speaker Revel Ultima system turns the new Continental into a concert hall. Further highlighting rear-seat comfort is an SPD SmartGlass tinting sunroof, which allows passengers to control heat from direct sunlight. Boasting higher ground clearance and better traction control, this model provides a softer ride and higher all round visibility. Very popular in Europe especially in countries like Norway and Uk, the vehicle now aims to makes its mark in the UAE and the growing conversion market of the Middle East. The AT35 is fitted with 35“ tyres on 17x10 wheels and the body has been raised by 30mm with 20mm raised suspension. The extended wheel flares are not only designed for housing the 35” tyres, but they have also given the isuzu D-Max AT35 a powerful look which makes it stand out from the crowd. Bought to the Gulf region by local dealer Genavco, the car is available from their showroom for both businesses and private individuals. The vehicle provides ultimate mobility on and off road – it is only a turn of a dial that is mounted
behind the gearstick that engages the four-wheel drive, and another turn selects low gears. The re-engineered suspension cushions the ride, while at the same time ensuring you can still feel the ‘real’ driving experience. The isuzu 2.5 litre twin-turbo common-rail diesel engine and 3.5t towing capacity, makes the AT35 the perfect work-mate. uae’s first hybriD truck HiNo 300 SERiES TRUCk LAUNCHED By AFM
Al-Futtaim Motors’ strong 2017 commercial line-up has been enhanced by the launch of the UAE’s first hybrid truck The Hino 300 Series Hybrid light-duty truck features the world’s first hybrid diesel engine designed to deliver cleaner, more efficient transport solutions. Like the conventional petrol-engine Hino light-duty trucks, the hybrid variants are totally customisable and can be used with mounted chiller body, freezer body or dry cargo box, making them the ideal environmentally friendly transport solution for cold chain and cold storage services. By employing a diesel Hybrid system, using a Euro 4 and EVV compliant 4L diesel engine matched to an auxiliary electric motor that is emission-free, the Hino Hybrid drive system significantly reduces exhaust tailpipe emissions when compared to a conventional diesel-engine truck. The Hino Hybrid emits significantly reduced emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide. Hino Hybrid trucks also offer reduced running costs through greatly improved fuel economy and savings on maintenance costs, thanks to the myriad technologies available such as Idle stop, Regenerative braking, Easy Start and take-off assist, and Diesel particulate active reduction filter. Ramez Hamdan, Acting Managing Director of Hino at Al-Futtaim Motors, said: “We have seen significant growth in the volume of light-duty trucks in the past three years. This growth has been paralleled with serious environmental goals by the UAE Government. “It’s imperative for us to counteract the effects of harmful CO2 emissions, and our hybrid offering is a proven solution for the commercial sector with an impeccable track record worldwide,” explained Hamdan.

SAB’s CEO Martin Lindqvist is guiding his company and the steel industry into hitherto unknown territory by pledging to reduce emissionfree steel by the end of the next decade. “We use blast furnaces; use coal to produce iron oxide; and when you get hot metal, you get CO2. But this is how we have produced steel for more than a thousand years,” he remarks. “We’ve got better and better but emissions remains the major problem of the steel industry. So we have decided to solve that problem.” It is possible you may not be familiar with the name SSAB but the 140 year-old Swedish company has been supplying steel for use on trailers in the Middle East for many decades. Bodybuilders in the GCC such as Bion Group, whose own CEO Noas Al Rawi was interviewed in T&FME last year, will swear by SSAB’s products, such as Hardox, to bolster the sides of their tippers and keep their vehicles running safely and efficiently. SSAB also acquired Finnish steel-producer Ruukki in 2014 and has forged a powerful new unit to sell structural steels under the Strenx banner for a variety of applications including the long booms of mobile cranes 16 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017
for companies like Liebherr and Terex. The day before we meet, T&FME had visited its steel mill in Oxelösund, a seemingly vast and steaming complex for processing iron ore raw material into the high strength, premium steel the company is renowned for. During a tour of its cavernous presses and labyrinths of workshops, where giant sheets, some as long as 100m, are prepared for shipping out to feed the hungry factories and plants of construction, automotive and heavy vehicle makers, we were reminded that in steel industry terms this was a small operation. Meeting in the much more palatial environs of a hotel in the heart of Stockholm, Lindqvist is eager to stress that, in an industry where size is everything, SSAB is happy to be one of its smaller, more nimble producers. “When you read the Swedish business press, they typically talk about the ‘Swedish steel giant’, but to be honest, globally we are about the number 45th, 47th or even 50th among steel companies,” he says unashamedly. “We are small but specialised, even if we are only covering a very small fraction of the global steel market. “We have a production capacity of 8.8 million tonnes and the market is 1.5

billion tonnes, so we are only addressing a small fraction of that amount.” Products like its QT steels (as in quenched and tempered, a process involving heating then cooling that strengthens and hardens materials like steel and other iron-based alloys) Hardox and Strenx may be considered niche products suitable for the requirements of heavy industries but they play a vital role. Lindqvist proudly says that Hardox is so well-known it is almost a generic by-word for high strength steels – the hoover of vehicle production, if you will. “We have to choose the market segments and geographies where we can have a strong position,” he says. “We have four high strength steels and a market share between 5% and 40% – that is a tiny part of the global market. QT is probably only 3-4million tonnes per year globally but we have a very strong position and are the market leaders. We are the biggest steel producer in the Nordic region of flat carbon material and the biggest plate producer in North America. “We work a lot with branding and have done so more or less since the beginning. Hardox is probably the strongest brand name and the most generic. When people talk about abrasive resistant steel they use the name.

They may not know that SSAB are producing it but they will know the name Hardox. “Whoever you are ask out in a quarry, a mine or in a truck tipper they know about Hardox.” He adds: “We are a steel company providing value added services, that’s all we do and only what we do. What we think makes us successful is flexibility in our operations this is a volatile business so we need flexibility. As you know the steel mills are not necessarily built for flexibility. We build them to run 24/7 for 15 years – it’s stable production, stable demand. That’s not how the world looks so it is important for us to be a high performing organisation with a superior customer experience.” Later that day, Lindqvist will be presenting the main awards at the Swedish Steel Prize, a global event that celebrates innovative and potentially industry re-shaping ideas using its products. Hundreds of SSAB’s clients
and end-users will be present to see who wins. Among them is a trailer manufacturer from the US that has produced a new rear impact guard for trucks and semi-trailers that exceeds North American standards (and European for the matter) which also reduces the impacts of off-set collisions. T&FME was also impressed by a South African company’s mining transporter, and Lindqvist says that the whole event is crucial to explaining how SSAB works with clients to produce new technology. “Innovation is what the Swedish Steel prize is all about,” he enthuses. “Some people claim that steel is an old-fashioned material that should be put out of business due to other materials but we don’t feel that. “It is needed when you build societies and cities. Steel is in many aspects a fantastic material because it’s one of the very few that is 100% recyclable. I feel that steel will be needed in the future as well, and with

new products and new steel grades we can compete with aluminium and other materials. We see growing interest in steel as well.” Many industries including the automotive sector are especially eager to see where its development of smart steel heads. good example of how the company works alongside its customers to design materials for new applications. “Typically, when we develop something, we like to do it with partners and customers. In our experience as a small steel company it works and avoids a lot of mistakes.” SSAB has developed new steel grades for the automotive sector with the main benefits of the combination of energy absorption, weight and costs, he adds. “If you take aluminium, for example, you can have the same weight but much better energy absorption which is, of course, important during an impact. A lot of automotive companies are trying to solve this by using press hardening, a technique that was actually invented and developed by SSAB 25 years ago. “When we roll-form these high strength cold-roll materials we can get the same energy absorption as hot stamping at the same weight, and is per piece 25-30% cheaper for the enduser. That is the main reason that automotive in volume terms was 28% higher last year and in Q1 this year it was another 22%.”

WhAT IS hARDOx? Hardox is a very wearresistant sheet steel. Hardox is manufactured and exported worldwide by the Swedish company SSAB, which developed the first modern wearresistant sheet in 1974. As this steel wears slowly, even under large mechanical loads, Hardox is also called wear plate.
To ensure it continues to be a viable contributor to building the vehicles and cities of tomorrow, the steel industry is having to come to terms with ever more stricter regulations on emissions. SSAB can rightly claim to be one of the world’s leading companies when it comes to making loads lighter and vehicles run further – but is it enough? “I think the best thing that we do right now is help our customers to reduce weight and fuel consumption. That is the best contribution we can make to the global environment,” he says. “Having said that we still have a problem and that is, of course, greenhouse gases and our emissions of CO2. We have invested a lot. We are the most CO2 effect of Steel producer globally and we are very proud of that but we are still and emitter of CO2.” He estimates that SSAB contributes 10% of total CO2 emissions in both Sweden and Finland, but he is committed to see that number reduced to zero. SSAB together with mining company LKAB and the energy firm Vattenfall have formed a jointventure company to develop and then begin producing steel that produces no CO2.
“Instead of using coal to reduce the iron ore we are going to use hydrogen,” he explains. “We have already proven it is possible on laboratory scales but the challenge will be doing this on a big industrial scale.” With Oxelösund, the plant most likely to trial and implement the new technology, due to end its current production cycle in ten years the pressure is on to prove that it can be possible. “The timeline is of course a bit stretched out but we will start this year to build the pilot plant. We expect to have a trial plant up and running by 2025. Remember that the current way of producing is 1,000 years old and we are talking about ending it within ten years - 15 years maximum. “The waste product will be pure water and it will solve a huge problem for SSAB and the global steel industry. It will also be extremely beneficial for the global climate. This is a really interesting project that we’re really proud of,” he continues. “This really is innovation at its best. We are not only concentrating on new steel grades, new applications together with our customers but we are also trying to take responsibility in other areas as well.”

orking together, MercedesBenz Trucks and the trailer manufacturer Krone have transformed the concept of an “integrated approach” to reduce CO2 into reality in less than twelve months. The integrated approach involves everyone in the haulage sector playing their part in reducing fuel consumption: commercial vehicle manufacturers, body/tyre suppliers, logistics companies and, last but not least, political decision-makers. The two companies’ development efforts on the integrated approach bring customers real benefits. The specific Mercedes-Benz Actros unveiled at the IAA 2016 features the efficiency package and the latest generation of the OM 471 six-cylinder inline engine, Predictive Powertrain Control (the anticipatory cruise control system) and A-label low rolling resistance tyres. When combined with the new Krone Profi Liner Efficiency trailer, it promises a reduction in fuel consumption, and therefore CO2 emissions, of up to 20% compared to existing combinations. A standard semitrailer-tractor combination from 2014 forms the basis of this comparison. Mercedes-Benz Trucks and its partners launched the first Efficiency Run in 2015 and were able to save up to 14% on fuel as a result in comparison to a standard semitrailer-tractor combination. Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, with responsibility for Daimler Trucks & Buses: “In 2015, the Efficiency Run proved that the integrated approach works. Now, just one year later, we are putting products that are fit for series production onto the roads. Our optimised semitrailer-tractor combination pays off for the environment and our customers: it lowers CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by up to 20% – and the cost can be amortised in about eighteen months.” Gero Schulze Isfort, managing director of the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group, adds: “Working in partnership has moved us a decisive step forwards in terms of the integrated approach. The 2015 Efficiency Run more than confirmed our expectations. We have subsequently further optimised our trailer, particularly with regard to everyday practicality. Thus, we were able to launch another field trial, now ended, which has resulted in a semitrailer that is fit for series production and is now going on the market – the Profi Liner Efficiency.” Reducing fuel consumption, and 22 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017

therefore CO2 , is currently one of the biggest challenges facing the haulage sector. In sectors outside the emissions trading scheme, of which haulage is one, the EU wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030. This demands enormous effort on the part of everyone involved in the haulage sector. However, the industry is convinced that it can accomplish this task – without statutory provisions – not just out of a sense of responsibility for the environment and society, but also driven by its customers. This is because lower CO2 emissions also mean lower fuel consumption, which represents a high cost factor for o ur customers. Back in 2008, European manufacturers formulated a vision to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020. It is essential, however, that this is cost-effective so that transportation by truck does not become more expensive and there is no impact on the European economy’s competitiveness. The responsibility here lies not just with the manufacturers of tractor units, but rather with the entire trucking system. That extends to tractor units, semitrailers, tyres, fuel, operations, infrastructure and fleet replacement. The Efficiency Run is the best proof that this integrated

approach works in real-world practice: compared to a standard semitrailer-tractor combination built in 2014, consumption could be reduced by 18-20% as a result. Thanks to the Efficiency Run, the package of measures being presented at the IAA to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 could quickly be transformed by Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Krone into specific standard products, which are already available to order. Depending on the truck and trailer in use, the following increases in efficiency are evident in terms of fuel consumption and the reduction in CO2 emissions: • Krone Profi Liner Efficiency: over 5% • Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor unit: up to 6% • Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC): up to 5% • Low rolling resistance tyres for tractor unit: 2-4% This increase in efficiency of up to 20% in total pays off for customers. Depending on the application and the vehicle service life distance, the extra cost of the trailer can be amortised in one to two years. In 2016, Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Krone organised a further three-month endurance test. As part of the Efficiency Run, five transport businesses tested the new optimised semitrailers in everyday operation: Grosse-Vehne, Elflein, Rhenus, Seifert and Wiedmann & Winz. In the course of this, the transport companies involved deployed their own Actros tractor units dating from 2013 to early 2015 from their fleets. These included two Actros 1845, two Actros 1842 and one Actros 1843. None of the five vehicles were specially configured for the three-month test run and no efficiency packages were implemented. The only on-board equipment was the FleetBoard telematics system into which Krone Telematics had been integrated including tyre pressure loss detection system, and Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC). Instead, the main focus of the field trial was on the completely new semitrailer attached to the five Actros models: the Krone Profi Liner Efficiency. It celebrates its world première at the 2016 IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover, Germany, and is now available to order. This solution differs from the familiar Krone Profi Liner in three main ways: new self-engineered Krone side panels made of impact-resistant plastic cover all the sides, including those of the three trailer axles, and improve the Cd value by 5.2%; a fourpart rear wing, also made of robust plastic, improves the Cd value by a further 6.3%;

and A-label low-resistance tyres reduce rolling resistance. In comparison with the previous year’s Efficiency Run, this test run did not look solely at fuel savings. Assessing the new trailer’s everyday usability was a specific priority. This involves examining handling, noise emission, robustness, loading options and access. During the three months of testing, the five semitrailer-tractor combinations covered more than 150,000 km on German roads. They transported car engines, steel, paper, timber products and building materials – in short- and long-distance haulage. According to the drivers, the new trailer really proved its worth in tough day-to-day operation. Loading is possible from all sides and even from the top, and presents no problems at all. Using a forklift to load from the side works just as smoothly as with a conventional trailer, despite the side panels. No damage to the side panels was noticed at any time during the test phase. Reverse docking onto a loading ramp was also completed without difficulties. All that is necessary is to fold in the four-part rear wing before opening the rear-end doors. Based on feedback from drivers, this takes just a few seconds. They also made positive comments about the familiar operability of the lifting and lowering unit.
OPTIMISEd AEROdyNAMICS The new Krone trailer was not the only form of the integrated approach that was presented at the Hanover at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show. The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz Actros featuring optimised aerodynamics due to a new spoiler lip, an optimised drivetrain and economical heavy-duty engines will also be on view for the first time. Of the new generation comprising three six-cylinder in-line engines, the most economical is the OM 471 with a displacement of 12.8 litres. The standard optimised Mercedes-Benz Actros with this engine variant consumes up to six percent less fuel. In addition to the new engine and transmission technology, the driving
strategy also makes a noticeable contribution to lowering fuel consumption. Mercedes-Benz has been setting benchmarks for many years now with Predictive Powertrain Control, GPS data and topographic maps in conjunction with the Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission, and with fuel savings of up to five percent. The shift points of the anticipatory cruise control have undergone further optimisation. Internal tests by Mercedes-Benz confirm that journey times change only negligibly with the new strategy – in reality, the difference is of no significance. In contrast, the saving effect of the new driving strategy is tangible, says the company.
The structural system for the side panels was singled out for high praise. It comprises five individual elements. These can be removed easily by hand at the height of the trailer axles – an important consideration when a wheel needs to be changed, for example. Even so, the lightweight plastic side panels (a proprietary Krone design) are so stable that they do not cause any wind noise. The side panelling is, of course, certified by the German Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV) and complies with legal requirements relating to the side underride guard. Low rolling resistance tyres and the trailer’s improved Cd value reduce consumption by over 5%. The side panels improve the Cd value of the Krone Profi Liner Efficiency by 5.2%. What’s more, the rear wing improves the Cd value by a further 6.3%. These two benefits, in conjunction with low rolling resistance tyres, have an extremely positive effect on the Actros tractor unit’s fuel consumption. An analysis of FleetBoard and Krone Telematics data showed that the optimised aerodynamics and use of A-label tyres reduced consumption by over 5% on their own. Krone’s new efficiency specification will also be available for the Mega Liner, Cool Liner and Dry Liner in future.

n many ways, MAN Truck & Bus and Schmitz Cargobull couldn’t be more perfectly matched. On the one side, you’ve got one of the world’s best-known commercial vehicle makers who has built a wealth of local knowledge and has proven to be especially adept at elevating the issue of safety in the region. And on the other, you’ve got a relatively recent newcomer who is also hungry for regional expansion and offers some of the best trailer development in the world. It’s also not a coincidence that the partnership unifies two companies that share a common heritage of providing German engineering knowhow to customers – and have the technology to back it up. Under the arrangement, the two companies will offer a range of truck and trailers that can be adapted according to the requirement of the fleet purchaser. Franz von Redwitz, managing director of MAN Truck and Bus Middle East FZE, explains that his company was keen to join forces with a top German quality brand, “as it ensures safety for our customers.” He adds: “We are fully committed to continuing to offer a full range of services 24 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017
that demonstrate the very best of German engineering and proven safety and comfort. Schmitz Cargobull is a well-recognised trailer company globally and is also committed to expansion across the Middle East. We are investing in quality products that can be tailored and personalised based on customer requirements.” MAN Truck & Bus Middle East offers the trailer-maker greater reach as well as an attachment to some of the industry’s bestregarded safety technology. Features on the truck-trailer combinations such as its EBS (electronic braking system ABS (anti-lock braking system) will come as standard. Von Redwitz explains that MAN Truck & Bus Middle places safety at the forefront of its offering to fleets. Indeed, it is far into a safety campaign which has been aligned with the UAE’s Vision 2021 plan to reduce road accidents and fatalities. The campaign really gathered momentum when, late last year, it hosted a road safety event in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police for both governmental agencies and commercial operators, and the company continues to work towards protecting all road-users.
We are fully committed to continuing to offer a full range of services that demonstrate the very best of German engineering and proven safety and comfort”
He says the tie-in with Schmitz Cargobull, “is in line with our vision to invest in safety and our safety campaign that we’ve been communicating since end of last year. We started with the campaign event with Abu Dhabi police and have continued with a set of different messages to support the 2021 UAE vision.” The deal with Schmitz Cargobull, while continuing the focus on safety, also coincides with the further investment into an expansion of its locations across the Middle East. The company recently opened a new regional headquarters that combines its operations, new sales and training teams with MAN TopUsed Center, for the first time. “MAN Truck & Bus Middle East has moved to a new location in Jebel Ali in order to be linked with our TopUsed team,” explains von Redwitz. “This initiative brings the entire team together in order to provide a full range of services and sufficient support for importers and users across the Middle East. He concludes: “All our efforts are always geared towards providing the highest standards to maximise customer satisfaction and safety.”

olvo Trucks presented its vision for safer and more economical fleets in the Middle East at a speciallyarranged media briefing in Dubai last month. The session which featured a welcome appearance by company president Claes Nilsson as well as MEENA head Giovanni Bruno provided both an update on the Swedish manufacturer’s progress in the region and an opportunity for it to reveal that five major safety and efficiency features are coming to the FM, FMX and FH ranges in the region. While it wasn’t a revelation for Nilsson to reveal that the Swedish company is offering a full range of “medium to heavy duty trucks” and “complete transport solutions for professional and demanding customers”, it was surprising to hear that Saudi Arabia still ranks as one of its major export markets with 1,277 vehicles shipped last year. Volvo enjoys a 37% share of the market in the Kingdom. With its sales driven by the powerful trading and distribution giant that is Zahid Tractor it has tripled the number of trucks on in the country over the past decade. Nilsson believes that reform and investment in Saudi Arabia will mitigate short-term disruption in the market. Designed to align with the Saudi’s Vision 2030 plan, Bruno revealed that the company is partnering with Zahid to launch what they describe as the “safest truck made in Saudi Arabia” – a version of the FH that features a driver airbag, lane change support, lane keeping support, its ESP – electronic stability program, a driver alert warning system, the headway collision warning system with emergency brake; as well as a tanker that meets ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) classifications for dangerous and flammable goods. Zahid is also expanding the amount of local materials (to 30%) used in the assembly of Volvo trucks to ensure the vehicles follow the localisation guidance for both the National Transformation Plan 2020 and Vision 2030. Beyond Saudi Arabia, Bruno added that the company is also maintaining a leading position in the UAE and Oman and has experienced, “a market share increase in Qatar and Egypt.” 26 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017

Volvo Trucks also believes it now has a “good set-up” and is ready for its business to take-off in Iraq. Its operation in Iran has also witnessed, “a positive development of the business thanks to our strong history” in the eastern country. The introduction of the I-Shift transmission in the region (especially in the UAE) has proven that there is a demand among some fleet buyers for safer and more efficient vehicles. The company is now offering five features across their FH, FMX and FM ranges designed specifically for industry truck operators working in the “challenging climate and varied topographies” of Middle East countries. The company wants to provide industry business operators with “brand new world-class technology solutions that increase their overall uptime while decreasing their overall fleet management costs” and is clearly targeting heavy on- and off-road users in the region. The I-Shift systems fitted with crawler gears (tested by T&FME last year) is to be officially available in the market. As will Automatic Traction Control, Volvo Dynamic Steering for dual front axels, a version of the I-Shift for severe-duty applications and heavy duty models with an increased front axel load. The new version of I-Shift makes it possible to add up to two new crawler gears. As T&FME found during testing, this offers an entirely new scope of movement for trucks with automated transmission. The crawler gears make it possible to start from a standstill in extreme situations, meaning the driver can haul a heavy load without worrying about getting into situations that may lead to costly standstills. “Combining crawler gears with a suitable rear axle ratio that optimises engine revs at high speeds, results in lower fuel consumption on the highway. This is a significant benefit to haulage firms doing this kind of work,” says Volvo Trucks. Volvo’s Automatic Traction Control has been developed for tough environments. Already used on its articulated haulers, it is now standard on the Volvo FMX front-wheel-drive trucks; 4x4, 6x6, 8x6, 10x6. The system consists of software connected to the wheels’ speed sensors, which detect and control wheel drive. When a rear wheel starts to slip, power is transferred automatically to the front wheels without the truck losing torque or speed. A coupling clutch activates the front-wheel drive in just half a second. 28 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017
PUTTiNg i-ShiFT ThRoUgh iTS PAcES Early in 2016, Volvo Trucks’ inventiveness was again on show as its new I-Shift with crawler gears was put through its paces. This technology was tested to its limits in the Port of Gothenberg with a FH16 production model, the most powerful in the FH series, completing an astonishing challenge, pulling a 750 tonne 40-trailer land train from standstill over 100 metres to demonstrate the remarkable capabilities of the gearbox. The enhanced option for the I-Shift automatic gearbox can drive as slowly as 0.5-2 km/h and can start off from standstill while safely hauling 325 tonnes, a unique achievement for series-produced trucks with an automated gearbox. Embodying this commitment to innovation is the technology that has gone into developing the FH series of Volvo Trucks, not only making them robust and durable to withstand the variable road conditions and extreme climate of the Middle East, but also one of the safest, most comfortable and easiest models to drive. The innovative I-Shift automatic gearbox found in the FH series has brought a new level of safety to heavy long-haul and construction. Re-introduced to the FH series in 2014, the automatic transmission has helped reduce the risk
of accidents by removing the possibility of common driver mistakes such as not engaging the engine brake when going downhill, not engaging the correct gear, or driving at a very high RPM. With I-Shift, all of these driving mistakes are avoided and the truck driver can focus on the road, become more fuel efficient and reduce the wear and tear of his clutch, gearbox and brake pads. The technological advancement of the I-Shift gearbox is underpinned by the state-of-the-art software packages that have been developed at Volvo. Proprietary software, such as the Performance Shift, Gearbox Oil Temperature Monitor, Heavy Start Engagement, and Enhance Shift Strategy, comes as standard in nearly all of the FH series and is integral to this industryleading transmission. Volvo Trucks’ commitment to safety, is also keenly felt in the technological development of the FH series’ braking system. Jack-knifing can cause serious accidents especially to susceptible drivers, unaccustomed to slippery conditions that can occasionally cause trouble to the region’s drivers. The Volvo FH’s Stretch Brake is initiated when the vehicle is being driven downhill or turning to help prevent jack-knifing.
“Volvo’s Automated Traction Control offers drivers improved manoeuvrability and fleet owners the added benefits of lower fuel consumption and decreased wear and tear,” says the company. “The system ensures that the optimal drive combination is always enabled, removing the decision from the driver.” Trucks across the Volvo Group’s ranges (including Renault and UD) are all currently designed to improve ride comfort but Volvo Dynamic Steering combines conventional hydraulic power steering with an electronically regulated electric motor fitted to the steering gear. Volvo feels this enables precision steering while giving the truck driver a safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable working environment. “Designed and engineered with drivers in mind, Volvo Dynamic steering elevates the steering of heavy vehicles to an entirely new dimension. This innovation can reduce wear-and-tear injuries on drivers, keeping them on the road which in turn benefits business productivity,” claims Volvo Trucks. Specially optimised for severe duty applications, the rugged version of the I-Shift – the I-Shift for severeduty applications – automated manual transmission is engineered for a wide range of construction and oil field applications. The gears and the hardware in the severe-duty I-Shift have been hardened to withstand frequent shifting in rugged operational environments like the varied landscapes and topography found throughout the Middle East. The enhanced I-Shift gearbox now offers more efficiency and productivity benefits for automated manual transmission and integrated powertrain to customers operating in tough vocational applications while providing improved uptime and longer component life. Finally, Volvo Trucks’ heavy-duty models with dual front axles allow for the increase the maximum technical capacity from 18t to 20t. Given that Middle East operators frequently drive heavier than their European counterparts, the extra load capacity translates directly into increased income-earning potential, as well as more flexibility for truck builds. “Something that is particularly valuable when transporting heavy materials in construction operations. Higher load capacity above the front axles also permits a greater variety of crane configurations and allows other applications with considerable weight on the front axles.”

that reach Dubai affects the stability of the regular distribution network.” He said high demand parts is stimulating a growth in counterfeit sales in Dubai. “Some of the independent garages are focused on servicing only inexpensive, old cars using very low quality spare parts. SKF is trying to change this trend,” Gupta commented.
Saif Humaid Al Falasi, group CEO of Enoc, says that the energy company has witnessed a steady growth in its downstream business despite the UAE economy shrinking in 2016. While GDP in the UAE fell by 2.5%, demand for gas, diesel, lubricants and jet fuel grew by 6% and were boosted by improved sales to the aviation, road and transport sectors. Al Falasi added that o “With the latter part of 2016 seeing oil prices steadying, Enoc Group’s energy business has seen growth, especially for its diesel oil and aviation fuel products in domestic and international markets,” said Al Falasi. “We are capable of meeting the demands of our customers in over 60 countries and we were able to achieve 100 per cent of our targeted volumes, while exceeding our targeted volumes and bottom line profitability.” “The Middle East’s demand for diesel, gas and oil is also expected to regain growth this year owing to higher crude oil price stimulating industrial activities. Our expectations for 2017 is to perform better as the GDP is expected to increase to 2.5% on the back of minor recovery in oil prices.”

mong the leading global brands at this year’s Automechanika Dubai event was WABCO, a provider of electronic braking, stability, suspension and transmission automation systems for commercial vehicles. The Belgianheadquartered company, which achieved sales of US$747.3 million in the first quarter of 2017, is showcasing its entire range of aftermarket technologies and services. Philippe Colpron, the WABCO aftermarket vice president, said: “The GCC has become a very attractive market for transport and logistics in the last years. As the oil price is declining, the region is looking for new ways to grow, for example with a stronger focus on tourism. “In the next years there will be a significant number of big events, including the Expo Dubai 2020 and the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. These events are connected to giant infrastructural projects which result in a higher demand for transport and logistics. Our role is to support the transport and logistics companies in the region to reduce the downtimes of fleets and to maximise their efficiency.” Also looking to make an impression this year was ZF Aftermarket from Germany. under the brands ZF, Sachs, Lemförder, TRW, Boge, and Openmatics. Dr Alexander Sabbah, managing director of ZF Services Middle East, said: “Through our well established Middle East footprint comprising a head office in Dubai paired with a fully equipped technical centre, a central logistics centre and branch offices in Kuwait and Qatar, we perfectly meet the rising regional demand well into the future.” Balkrishna Industries (BKT) from India was among the key international players in the Tyres & Batteries section, and launched its latest range of off-highway tyres (OHT) for multi-purpose trucks, material handling, Port equipment, Backhoe loaders, and All Terrain Cranes. Rajiv Poddar, the joint managing sirector of BKT said: “BKT has emerged as a global leader in the OHT segment and has established itself as a highly reliable brand. We’ve made massive investments in our manufacturing facilities and processes which ensure uninterrupted supply of class leading quality products.” Global player A-MAP, which specialises in the distribution of aftermarket automotive spare parts, automotive batteries, tyres and lubricants was present for a ninth time.
A DyNAmic pArTs mArkET Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Automechanika Dubai’s organiser Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “It’s estimated that 44.5 million passenger vehicles will ply Middle East roads by 2020, while a further 1.8 million commercial vehicles in the GCC will pave the way for some impressive opportunities for the automotive services industry. “Automechanika Dubai presents the key to this dynamic market, offering a unique platform for global
and local players alike to look for new regional distributors, open up new markets, or expand on existing customer bases where there’s still plenty of room for growth.” Automechanika Dubai covered the six product groups of Parts & Components (1,125 exhibitors); Tyres & Batteries (230); Accessories & Customising (205). Repair & Maintenance (200); Electronics & Systems (140); and Car Wash, Care & Reconditioning (55).
Showcased at this year’s show was its Sebang batteries, Solite batteries, the Asimco range and the recently added Achilles tyres range. Managing director Asad Badami said: “We rate this exhibition very highly. We have to be there because it is important for our identity in the automotive market and this is the only exhibition that puts all parts of the automotive industry together in one show. “To A-MAP, Automechanika is more than just a trade fair for the industry, it offers us a platform and opportunity to meet and network with our existing customers from around the world as well as new ones to showcase our latest products and services in a professional setting. We had some influential visitors and the opportunity to meet potential new distributors. He continued: “Our stand attracted a good number of visitors this year with a positive response and allowed us to interact and engage with new business leads. Although we felt the general footfall at the exhibition to be less this year, the quality of meetings and contacts made, was an improvement from last year.” A-MAP sells its automotive spare parts, batteries, tyres and lubricants to trade professional’s worldwide and has expanded its presence in markets A locAl iNTErNATioNAl show Automechanika Dubai 2017 opened with 1,954 exhibitors from 57 countries looking to make inroads in a market where spare parts revenue will be worth $14.8 billion by 2021.

such as Russia and Qatar. It is also currently building a new 8,500sqm storage facility in Jebel Ali Free Zone. Badami says the new facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 and adds that it will include a “state of the art super flat floor, equipped with battery charging facilities as well as a quality control designated area.” This year’s event took place during a testing time for the automotive industry. While there was plenty of product on display, T&FME was told by some exhibitors that they felt footfall was a little lower this year. Given that some estimates calculate that vehicle sales are down by as much as 50% this year, it is understandable if this was the case. However most felt the quality was largely good. Hans Georg Brune, managing partner of cardan shaft manufacturer CSN Middle East, told the magazine that, while his company chose to not exhibit this year, he instead visited the show. He says he managed to score some good meetings regarding wholesale opportunities for CSN range of quality product.

“I hope we can get into business together – with the outcome to be seen over the next three to four months as we approach the Ramadan and Summer vacation season,” he said. Looking at the aftermarket, Brune says CSN has seen growth this year as its product range (manufactured in the region) continues to expand. However, he stressed that some fleets are preferring to strip ageing vehicles before buying new parts. “Despite an overall difficult market, CSN is growing and we are looking to at least double last year’s results, but this is only possible due to the fact that our product range fits into multiple industrial areas, from the automotive to heavy industry,” he explained. “The market is getting more and more cost-conscious as the overall situation is weak. Payment collections from clients is an issue and as a lot of fleet and equipment is taken off the road, fleet owners cannibalise the off-work equipment to keep the remaining fleet going before purchasing new parts!”

MiX Telematics looks at how fleets can reduce fuel costs
D
espite the relative reduction in the price of fuel over the past two years, fuel continues to be the number one cost of operating a fleet. As such, fleet managers are continuously looking for new ways to reduce fuel consumption. It’s well-known that driving behaviour such as speeding, excessive idling, harsh braking and sudden acceleration burn more fuel and directly impact fuel consumption and kilometre per gallon rates. Mix Telematics suggests that managers should considers actively coaching driver behaviour while they are in the vehicle. “Virtually every fleet manager has advised drivers to avoid this behaviour, and many have even hosted classroomstyle training for drivers. Fewer, however,
36 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017
are taking advantage of technology that lets them monitor driver behaviour while drivers are on the road,” says the company. Fleet management software and on-board computers (OBCs) make it possible to automatically monitor for unsafe or fuel-wasting behaviours, and alert the driver and managers when an event occurs. Software can be configured to audibly alert drivers when they trigger an event (eg. speed approaches or passes the posted speed limit) so the driver can immediately self-correct the behaviour. “Managers can then track warnings and events and use the data to further coach drivers,” Mix Telematics recommends. “Better yet, managers can use the data to reward safe driving: customers have found that rewards are more effective than punishments (such as fines) when it comes to

incentivising safe and fuel-efficient driving.” Fleets that use this approach have reported fuel consumption reductions of 10-15%, which could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for a very large fleet. One hour of idling consumes roughly a gallon of fuel for a heavy-duty vehicle, and a half-gallon for a light-duty one. If your fleet has hundreds of vehicles and they each idle for an hour a day, that’s hundreds of gallons a day (and thousands of dollars a day) in wasted fuel. Fleets should implement an idling policy, and then monitor idling time, urges the company. “Excessive idling also puts additional hours on engines, leading to more wear and tear and higher maintenance costs,” explains MiX Telematics. “Fleet managers should implement an idling policy, and then
FUEl EFFiciENcy
actively monitor it via their fleet’s OBCs, which can be configured to collect engine data. Many fleets set an idle limit of five minutes, which is in line with most state and federal regulations. In school zones, the idle limit might be one minute or less.” (“In some industries, such as Oil & Gas, drivers use their vehicle as their safe haven, and thus companies may need to adjust their idling policies to account for the need for heat or air conditioning for drivers at rest.”) A further method of reducing fuel consumption and increasing efficiency would be to set and monitor high-end speed limits for highways consistent with maximum fuel economy for the vehicle. Vehicle and engine manufacturers can provide recommendations for optimising speed and fuel economy. Cummins Engines, for instance, provides a guide with advice such as: Every 2% reduction in aerodynamic drag results in approximately 1% improvement in fuel economy; Above 55 m/h (88.5 km/h), each 1 m/h increase in vehicle speed decreases fuel economy by 0.1 m/g (miles per gallon); Every 10 psi that a truck’s tires are underinflated reduces fuel economy by 1 percent. “Fleet managers can implement governing systems that allow them to limit an engine’s speed, or utilise fleet management software to monitor for speed and warn drivers when they are approaching or have surpassed a local speed limit or a company-defined top speed limit,” says Mix Telematics. “Monitoring enables managers to track trends, coach drivers as needed, and reward good driver practices.” Excessive RPMs can also be hard on engines, waste fuel and can limit a driver’s ability to control the vehicle. If fleets monitor for this behaviour and use in-cab audible feedback for drivers to reduce it: “Managers can also use the data to coach drivers on gear-shifting strategies.” MiX Telematics furthermore suggests that creating incentive plans around driver-controllable metrics to reward drivers’ efforts can have a positive impact on fuel economy. “Gamification can be a great motivator: we’ve seen many fleets hold contests among drivers to see who can exhibit the safest and most economically sound driving behaviour. Set measurable goals, such as a 5% reduction in fuel consumption or a 10% increase in m/g over a six-month period. Share the rewards of these campaigns in the form of prizes or bonuses.”

Customers have found that rewards are more effective than punishments (such as fines) when it comes to safe and fuelefficient driving”
On average, commercial fleets report 1-4% in fuel shrinkage each month. Fleets can actively monitor fuel levels by configuring fleet management software to transmit fuel level information directly to fleet managers. This data can help identify discrepancies in fuel levels that may indicate theft or out-of-route driving miles. In-vehicle monitoring systems (IVMS) can also improve safety and reduce costs over time, adds MiX Telematics. “Many fleets are in the midst of either updating their in-cab technology or looking at installing their first IVMS,” comments the company. “If your fleet is among them, be sure the system you select can support monitoring these factors. A solution that can do all of this may have a slightly higher up-front cost, but fleets quickly make up in the difference in the form of lower fuel costs, in addition to all of the benefits (monetary and otherwise) that accrue from improving the safety profile of your fleet – most importantly, reducing crashes, which saves lives.” MoTor MoNiToriNG Fleets can actively monitor fuel levels by configuring fleet management software to transmit fuel level information directly to fleet managers.

t almost seems too good to be true. It is often thought that one can park their old, used car in a dealership and in return, drive away with a brand-new and a shiny vehicle. So profound are the myths surrounding the automotive trade-in business that it’s no wonder customers are often perplexed as to how the procedure works, which can lead to unfulfilled expectations and disappointment. Mahesh Rohra, director at Arabian Automobiles Company, clarified some important issues related to effective trade-ins. “The reality is that the benefits of trading in your car at a trustworthy dealership can pay off remarkably, reaping both financial and value-based rewards,” he comments. “Customers can save time and money by understanding the dealership they work with.” Before deciding to go ahead and trade in 38 TRUCK&FLEET ME JUNE 2017
a car, the team at Arabian Automobiles shares the most practical tips and pointers to help make the most out of a trade-in experience. The first step in trading in a car is usually accompanied by a test drive, a thorough check by the mechanic to ensure that the vehicle is in sellable condition and of an appropriate age with great mileage. The salesperson will then evaluate a trade-in value, which in most cases could be negotiable. The final agreed-upon trade-in value will be deducted from the cost of the new car. Clearly, the advantages are well worth it when a trade-in is done correctly and facilitated by professional experts in the field. First of all it can be fast and convenient, if done right. Selling a car privately can take weeks, or even months. There are also ‘lone agents’ that delay the sale before making it an equitable

exchange. A dealership will be keen to take the vehicle off your hands on the same day after the evaluation was made. Oftentimes, dealerships will also purchase your car even if you decide not to trade it in for a new one. An infinite amount of paperwork and logistics is usually involved in selling a car privately, not to mention the risks of a flopped or undervalued sale. In comparison, where a licensed and registered dealership is involved, there is a quality guarantee and the process is handled by professionals from evaluation all the way through to new car delivery. Customers opting for a trade-in deal will notice that it is much easier now with low down payment assistance options and no upfront payments or deposits at many dealerships. customers that are looking for a change. In terms of positive equity, if the car is valued at more than what is owed, the money can be utilised as a down payment on the new car. Some dealerships offer to purchase the old car to reduce any outstanding loan and pay the balance. These benefits allow the customer to fund their new car and drive it out of the dealership on the same day. Experienced evaluators are representing their company in their transactions, so the market valuation is fair and equitable. In addition, during a private sale, the seller runs the risk of being pressured by the new owner into paying for any mechanical issues that may arise. However, dealerships undertake all accountability for the drivability of the vehicle once it has been traded in, and usually don’t contact the seller post sale. Though few and far between, there are a few main disadvantages to trading in your vehicle. However it is possible to provide you with some expert advice on how to avoid common pitfalls. Primarily it is useful to understand that the dealerships don’t consider the cost that

went into the upkeep of the vehicle. If the vehicle recently underwent a tune-up or had additional accessories, the costs of these aren’t taken into consideration during the trade. However, it could be worthwhile to mention the repair costs and time period over which the repairs were done to the dealer. You may even bring along receipts for the transactions and try to leverage it as an advantage when negotiating the car’s value. In rare instances, dealerships may not want to accept a used car trade-in if the vehicle is out of favor with the buying public or if they already have a multitude of similar vehicles on their lot. Even though a vehicle’s desirability can have a significant impact on its trade-in price and value, as a general rule dealerships take most cars for a trade-in as long as the vehicle is in sellable condition and is mechanically well kept. If you are in doubt as to whether your car can be accepted by the dealership, call in advance or send a few photos to the dealer before paying them a visit. Their sales people will usually be equipped to give you a general idea of whether or not your car is able to be traded in or not. dOUBLE a adViCE Arabian Automobiles is the exclusive dealer for Nissan in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

In the whIte desert Polar explorer and Arctic Trucks founder Emil Grimsson on tackling Antarctica
O
ver eight months in route planning, analysing data and risk-assessment were necessary to establish a potentially safe supply path between the landing point of the icebreaker vessell and Whichaway Camp in Antarctica. White Desert, the luxury tour operator of this camp, commissioned Arctic Trucks to provide vehicles and expert support to establish a land route for a future supplies line. The team studied more than 1,500 km with a main focus on finding a safe route along the Iceshelf. No vehicles had travelled this route before. The main challenge in finding a new route was crevasses created as the glacier moves over ice rises and the Jutulstraumen, an ice flow that moves up to 4 meters per day through otherwise
slow moving ice shelf. The Arctic Trucks team was faced with an unexpected amount of ice melt but their training and persistence allowed them to successfully navigate the situation. Building on decades of experience travelling in crevassed areas in Iceland and having pioneered a route from NOVO ice runway up along the Shcherbakov mountain range up to the Antarctica high plateau in Queen Maud Land, Arctic Trucks undertook this challenge with confidence. The team of used their expertise, environmental training and vehicle handling knowledge to their advantage to tackle the harsh conditions and successfully complete the expedition. Using satellite data and the latest GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) the expedition collected 11GB of scanning data, documented
suggestions for further operational improvements and also took unique photography and video footage. The data has already been made available to University of Iceland will be shared with the scientific community. The expedition used two Arctic Trucks AT44, one 4x4 and one 6x6. The vehicles are re-engineered Toyota Hilux, fitted with very large low air-pressure tyres, a setup that has now successfully recorded 277,000 km driven in Antarctica. For this type of operation, the Arctic Trucks vehicles travel about three times faster and use about 1/6th of the fuel the common belt vehicles that are being used in Antarctica. This allows for huge cost savings in fuel and more scientific research to be conducted during the season. In addition it leads to a big reduction of the CO2 emissions and has proven very reliable.
