We have been particularly impressed by the tors the chance to join training programmes that can improve the efficiency, productivity and, perhaps most importantly, safety. Given the amount of advice and training available, why aren’t we the most efficient and safest region out there? Well two major barriers appear to be the major sticking points. The first is perhaps the most understandable: money. Despite many of these training

Prima mover

Tata enters the global highway fray with the new Prima. Has the truck got what it takes to take on the big boys? T&FME thinks it may succeed

T

he Tata Prima might be the halfway point between the high-tech continent crossing trucks offered by European and Japanese manufacturers and those at the value end of the market you’ve been looking for. The India manufacturer and its UAE dealer in the Prima are so confident in the truck that they’re offering it with one of the most generous warranties available in the market. Your first impression of the Tata Prima (model viewed: 4438.S) is how unlike any other commercial vehicle by the Indian behemoth it is. The stripped down and austere looks and finish of its fellow Tata vehicles have been dumped in favour of the sort of stylised front-end favoured by other tractor makers in the 40t class. The tiltcab mounted on the chassis features sweeping curvy lines on the sides, and a large black grille on the front. Its bumper is heavy duty and features angular and modern head lamps. Air ducts sit either side of the grille and the fascia is grooved beneath it, suggesting Tata has worked hard on making sure that its truck is as aerodynamic as possible. While not as distinctive as Scania’s or Volvo’s most recent designs, for a truck pitched towards

the value-end of the market, it’s outwardly pleasingly rugged-looking and beyond what you may expect in a similar price band. (The 4438.S is a much more refined and complete proposition, for example, than the Dongfeng DFL4240A2 that T&FME looked at in February.) Climbing into the tractor is more difficult than hoped with a relatively high hop from the second step to the floor of cab. Once inside however you see where Tata has expended much of its effort when it was designing the Prima. Tata have fitted the Prima with an airconditioned control room with enough space to fit two bunks at the rear (although T&FME didn’t try it out, Tata says that it has fitted an ambience control unit to control climate conditions from the beds for a comfortable sleep). Controls on the side allow the ISRI-made seats (ISRI and Tata Johnson Controls have had a JV for a number of years) at the front to be reclined. Ride comfort will be pretty comfortable even if you’re running a long leg from Jebel Ali to Muscat. The whole interior reflects a deliberate attempt to match the high ergonomical standards of international brands. You would expect the visibility to be good with the cabin over chassis set-up providing a position close to the road, however the large

windscreen and generously-sized windows at the side mean that you get a pretty good view from up top. European drivers may not agree but overall, the dashboard and driver environment feels over specced - despite the model demonstrated featuring the empty switch spaces on the mould of the dash – for some operators in the UAE used to analogue dials and spending time with a chiropractor. While it may be a looker it is what is underneath and behind the cab that will probably matter the most for buyers. In this regard, Tata has sensibly opted to combine the best of its own know-how with that of its partners in India, or in some cases manufacturers providing their own off-the-shelf contributions. The engine (Cummins ISLe 375 Euro-III) specifications are as robust as the chassis. The 6 cylinder, 8900cc unit provides a torque of 1550Nm and 300-plus HP, earning the Prima the right to say its has one of the best power to weight ratios in its class. Top speed on the hydraulically power steered tractor is listed at 110km/h and should have enough clout to deal with overloading. (T&FME was particularly impressed with idle volume and in-cabin noise. The Prima is surprisingly discreet and comparable to most other trucks available.) From a maintenance and repair point of view, the mounting of the engine and turbo intercooling unit is easily accessible. The Cummins engine itself is typically straightforwardly designed and compact. Tata once had to ship its blocks from the US but today produces them with Cummins in a JV (Tata Cummins). If parts are needed they can now be quickly shipped in from the sub-

continent even if they originated in the States. The Prima 4438.S is packed with a Euro-III unit which is fully electronically controlled. Sensors inside the engine report to a connection point inside the vehicle, so should there be a fault a diagnostic kit can take readings to direct repairs and replacements. The international line-up of suppliers to the truck also includes Eaton which supplies the 9-speed gearbox and transmission, Hendrickson the suspension, and even the reflectors are supplied by 3M. In terms of applications, Tata has worked on providing a competent braking system in tandem with specialised axles for heavy duty and high speed uses. The Indian manufacturer also claims that the tractor offers excellent loading and unloading times for faster turnarounds. Entering the market in its two-axle configuration, the tractor is suitable both inside cities as well as the open highway, and it’s easy to see it being a useful link in many logistics and transportation chains.

Verdict While the Prima is unlikely to deliver the ultimate in performance, its all-round build quality is difficult to beat at its price. It’s also a great all-rounder, providing comfort for long distance excursions and flexibility for carrying freight at ports with fast loading and unloading times. TYRES Overview

Trying not to wear out As summer and the burning rubber season approaches, T&FME talks to the manufacturers trying to stop your wheels grinding to a halt

I

t’s May and it goes without saying that it’s hot out there and we can expect our roads to be full of rubber. The leftovers from burst truck tyres and blowouts litter the highways of the Middle East creating a hazard for other road users including other truck drivers. Blown tyres cause accidents and can tragically take lives. Sadly most tyre failures are avoidable. Tyres are often damaged long before you realise it and visual and physical tyre checks are essential to keep track of what’s going on in your individual tyres. During the heat of summer, the combination of the heavy load, ambient temperatures far over 40oC and pushing at the top end of your truck’s speed can stress the tyre beyond its limits. A previously damaged tyre can take no more and

6 TRUCK&FLEET ME MAY 2014

fails. Underinflation is also a major cause of tyre failure. The entire weight of the vehicle and load is being carried by air. If you are running on underinflated tyres, the parts that make up its structure come under more stress than they are designed for. Rubber is particularly vulnerable under the extreme heat on the roads in the region (remember the surface temperature is often far higher than the air temperature). Drivers really should be checking their tyre pressures every single day but it becomes of paramount importance in the long summer months. Overloading is also ppa common feature of transportation operations in the region which is concerning as overloading a vehicle can also fatally damage a tyre. Just because your truck

will accept a 120t load it doesn't mean your tyres can carry the weight, especially if they're underinflated. Lars Moller Al Shirawi’s general manager, aftermarket, says beyond the care of the tyres themselves, many fleet owners and drivers are taking chances when it comes to the use of retreaded rubber. “The gross combination weights are ridiculously high. A general specification would carry 110-120t and if you look at the manufacturing specifications on the truck and the trailer, the loads shouldn’t be more 90t,” says Moller. “These trucks do it but when you get out on the roads these trucks are generally not well maintained – especially the trailers. They overload and speeds are too high.”

Overview

With all the load of the truck and trailer carried by its tyres, workshops like Al Shirawi’s in Al Quoz are full of vehicles that bear the mark of operators who are taking chances when it comes to tyre care. “A lot of trucks owners are only using retreaded tyres even though they claim that they only put them on the drive wheels not the steering wheels. Then they don’t maintain the tyre pressure,” he pauses. “So yes… many interesting things can happen.” With tyre costs estimated to be up to 25% of a fleet operation there is both a safety and productivity incentive to take tyre care more seriously. Both truck manufacturers and distributors are more and more often offering fleet owners advice on how to run their

operations, but there is a third party, the tyre manufacturers themselves, that are now offering both the technology and the training to reduce accidents and cut costs. For instance Goodyear’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT), promises a future where tyres remain inflated at the optimum pressure, without the need for external pumps, electronics or driver intervention. A commercial vehicle design is still being tested but the company is convinced it will add kilometres between refuelling. More immediately Bridgestone's recently opened Truck Tyre Centre is a forwardthinking approach to bridging the gap between the manufacturer, its dealers and the most importantly fleet operators and truck owners.

The training offered is intended to increase the safety of commercial vehicles through customer awareness. A learning centre emphasises the safety and reliability of the Bandag system retreads, and showcases the economical and environmental value of retreaded tyres. (Bridgestone is promoting its system as a environmentally-friendly solution as it uses up to 75% less energy and resources than making a new truck tyre.) Acting as both trainer and consultant, Bridgestone's approach should improve the lifespan of truck tyres as well as the standards of tyre care and fleet management within its users. The name Pirelli conjures up images of high performance tyres, but the famous Italian brand has turned its considerable expertise to

WABCO’s ABS functionality helps to prevent locking of a vehicle’s wheels as a result of excessive actuation of the service braking system, especially on slippery roads.

Tyre care is absolutely critical if a fleet operator wants to save lives and money.

the commercial vehicles sector with its new Carrier range. Three million kilometres went into testing the tyre in some of the toughest conditions imaginable. According to Pirelli the new tyre could reduce total lifetime costs as well as improve the safety of light commercial vehicles such as vans. Pirelli promises lower rolling resistance, a longer lifespan, better handling, improved comfort and better performance. If that sounds like it’s too good to be true, the Pirelli team in Dubai says that the company is already proving that it is both committed and convinced it can make a difference to the fleet market in the Middle East. ”We have a very good distributor network and as this region is growing very quickly; it is time to throw our hat in the ring,” says Pirelli marketing manager Pierre Olivier Chevalier. “We had a truck tyre presence in the past, but now our target is to dramatically develop the business.” The successful 01-Series brand has been in the market for two years and Pirelli truck tyre guru Georgios Balaskas says that while the

company initially focused on tyre development for cooler climates, a focus on the region means it can now declare its products as desert-ready. “We spent more than three years continuosly testing,” confirms Balaskas. “We have the correct product for the area as we conducted a lot of tests in Saudi. In Europe, Pirelli means a very strong tyre and the best for international fleets and and we have done a lot of things to reduce the costs internally and the spare money we have has been invested in our truck tyres." From a global high-end tyre manufacturer’s point of view overloading presents technical challenges which canlimit the ranges and sizes they can and are willing to offer - Pirelli for instance stops at 24in. The trade-off between fuel consumption and the loads carried and environmental conditions means that the tyres here do not offer the same fuel economy seen in Europe. However with the new generation of tyres and trucks, such as the Volvo FMX and MAN's TGS-WW, there is still potential for greater fuel economy with power for fleet operators willing to take on new trucks to take the load rather than overload.

According to WABCO, taking the hitches out of being hitched can help to reduce the total cost of transport. The UK company’s innovative Intelligent Trailer Programme is the ultimate scheme to improve the safety and efficiency of all types of trailers. It consists of different modules and functions that can be used separately or in combinations. Trailer builders and fleet operators can select those functions that are most relevant for their particular needs through the most cost-effective solution. WABCO’s Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) functionality helps to prevent locking of a vehicle’s wheels as a result of excessive actuation of the service braking system, especially on slippery roads. The system detects when the trailer wheels block during hard braking. It unblocks the wheel while maximising the effectiveness of the brake force to reduce speed. ABS significantly reduces the stopping distance during emergency braking within physical limits and allows the driver to keep control of the vehicle during emergency manoeuvres.

“WE have the correct product for the region as we conducted a lot of tests in Saudi” 8 TRUCK&FLEET ME MAY 2014

Another interesting feature the Rollover Stability System (RSS) is included in the Electronic Braking System (EBS). It reliably prevents vehicle rollover within physical limits. The system assesses vehicle data such as wheel speed and load information and – by means of an integrated sensor – it assesses transverse acceleration data.

The celebration, at the ZM headquarters in Sitra, took place in front of the first Fuso canter that was sold in Bahrain by ZM, which later it decided to buy back from the customer, and retain in the company’s premises. “We are very proud of the success that Mitsubishi Fuso has achieved over the years, through the sales records on the trucks, buses in addition to the light vehicles, and the satisfaction of the customers,” said general manager of the company, Mohammed Zaki . “80 years has passed since Mitsubishi had

successfully manufactured the Fuso canter, through all those years, this brand has formed a base of a wide range of happy and satisfied customers which stands out for its high fuel efficiency and optimal total cost of ownership,” he added. The first generation of the Fuso Canter truck came on the market in March 1963. Fifty years and eight generations later, Daimler is celebrating the truck as a best-selling hit with global sales of over 3,700,000 units since the market launch in its home market Japan. The light-duty Fuso Canter truck is the flagship of the Daimler subsidiary, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), and is in demand by customers in more than 150 countries around the world.

Eighty five cases of diesel fuel smuggling were uncovered in the UAE last year, the Federal Traffic Council announced last month. The council said there were 48 cases recorded in Abu Dhabi, 11 in Dubai, 15 in Ajman, five in Sharjah and six in Ras Al Khaimah. “Those who smuggle hazardous material will face a variety of consequences,” said Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zafeen, director of Dubai Police Traffic Department. “They will be charged with transporting hazardous material without a licence.” In some cases diesel fuel was smuggled from one emirate to another, and in others, to other countries. He said those who are caught smuggling hazardous material can face time in jail if they put people’s lives in danger and/or pay a fine of Dh30,000. “They will definitely face prison time if they have put the lives of innocent people in danger by transporting hazardous material,” said Maj Gen Al Zafeen. He added that gangs that smuggle diesel will be charged with transporting flammable material in vehicles that are not equipped.

transmission. The additional gear means that gear ratio have been made lower at low gears and wider at high gears, producing responsive acceleration and smooth-shifting operation at all revs. And lower RPMs while travelling at high speeds means improved fuel efficiency. The vehicle is available with a 2.5L petrol engine, producing 121kW gross power, or the more

powerful 2.5 common rail diesel engine, with 128kW power. Torque on both engines is impressively high for the vehicle class, making the Navara a perfect vehicle for powering up slopes with heavy loads (or towing a boat on the weekend). With the 4WD variant, drivers can select between drive modes and change operation while travelling at speed (up to 100km/h). Those

who frequently travel on off-road conditions or broken sandy ground will benefit from the 4LO mode, which distributes more power to the opposing wheels which have higher surface traction when there is freewheeling on sand. The mode options are shown on a digital display.

Chevrolet Colorado According to Chevrolet, its new Colorado took five years and $2 billion to develop, the most extensive clean-sheet midsize truck programme in Chevrolet’s 101-year history, and perhaps a sign of how competitive – and important – is the pick-up market globally. The Colorado is based on GM’s global body-on-frame, rear-drive midsize truck architecture, with excellent hauling and towing capabilities.

Mitsubishi L200 Development of a stiffer chassis led to a reduction in noise inside the cabin. Low and high stance models are both equipped with a double wishbone suspension coilover, twin-tube shocks, and a solid stabilizer bar on the front; for the high-stance vehicles, the rear leaf springs are over the rear axle for increased ground clearance.

High towing capability Increased ground clearance

Mitsubishi’s L200 pick-up has a distinctive curving front design, and the reliable pick-up has an established fan-base, due to vehicle comfort and performance. Drivers face a balanced and slick instrumentation panel, while its body has been engineered for less drag. Comforts include a flip-down sunglasses storage case and cup and bottle holders. On-the-job performance remains king in the pick-up segment, and the L200

has a number of power options, including a 3.5 litre V6 engine that puts out 137kW. A 2.5l diesel engine produces a high-torque output, ideal for going off-road with a full load of cargo or towing. Drivability is assured with a double wishbone front suspension with coil springs and stabiliser bar, with an abovethe-axle leaf spring rear suspension.

Distinctive design Extra-strong cabin frame

Knowing the residual value is difficult but the new entry is backed by excellent aftermarket support.

VolkswagEn Amarok Volkswagen is the newest of the premium European vehicle manufacturers to enter the pick-up market, but its Amarok shouldn’t be seen as lightweight, and is larger than its main market competitors. Perhaps it’s to the brand’s benefit that it was able to start with a relatively blank slate,

rather than being wedded to a long model generation history. A number of the technologies implemented in the Amarok are being used for the first time in the mid-size pickup segment, including Bi-Turbo charging of the top engine and an optional permanent 4MOTION all-wheel

drive with Torque Sensing (Torsen) differential with a 40:60 ratio between the front and rear axles (one of three driveline options for the Amarok). The vehicle was initially launched in the Middle East with an 188kW petrol engine in 4x2 configuration, but more recently

the variant range was bolstered by the addition of the 2.0L TDI diesel double-cabin, a move made in response to customer demand. The 4x4 variant was launched this year with a six-speed manual.

Mazda BT-50 Mazda’s BT-50 was launched in 2011, and shares a base platform with the same year’s Ford Ranger. With a sporty front design and high road profile, it’s another pick-up targeting the working week + weekend driver market. Comfort features include a large and spacious cabin, wide-opening doors, a digital display, and the gear stick placed closer to the wheel for a sportier driver feel. But while Mazda wants to impress upon you how much like

Ford Ranger a passenger car the new BT-50 feels, it can’t hide a solid architecture beneath the exterior panels. The pickup has a high towing capacity of 3,350kg, which Mazda credits to the tougher vehicle frame to which the tow bar is attached. For carrying tools and material, the maximum cargo capacities range from 1,214l up to 1,829l.

Sporty front design Large cargo capacity

When Ford released its new Ranger pick-up in 2012, the market was stunned by the larger, roomier and gruntier vehicle, which now in many markets runs up against the Hilux as the vehicle of choice. While driving a pick-up used to mean enduring a basic, workmanlike interior, the Ranger’s interior is car-like, with air conditioning standard on all variants in the Middle East. Options include leather-trimmed seats, dual-zone

electronic automatic temperature control (DEATC), or its electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) 4x4 system, which lets you shift from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive without having to stop the vehicle. Safety is also focused on, with ABS braking standard, as well as a strengthened bodyshell and multiple airbags. Read our review on page 16.

The Hilux holds its value but remains expensive second-hand no matter the mileage or age

Toyota Hilux Toyota’s Hilux is one of the best selling pick ups in the world, and also one of the best-loved. Known for its reliability and easy availability of spare parts, it’s a favourite of those who want a hard driving vehicle that can conquer tough conditions, including the high heat and dust found in the

Middle East. Buyers have a range of options, including whether to select a 2.0 or 2.7l petrol engine, or the 2.5l, 4-cylinder, direct injection common rail diesel engine. It is available in a 4x2 and 4x4 options, while in 4WD mode it the driver can choose between a number of driving

modes that best match, whether 2WD for regular driving on city streets and high ways, a mode for rainy, slippery conditions, and a special L4 mode for conditions where strong traction is needed. A smooth ride is ensured by the high-rigidity frame, optimising the body structure to help reduce

noise and vibration and improve stability and control. This is further reinforced by the rigid axle rear suspension, with both the leaf springs and the damping force of the shock absorbers.

T

he Ford Ranger, codenamed T6 when it was being developed, is a mid-size pickup truck produced by the Ford Motor Company. A concept of the pick-up was first unveiled in October 2010, at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney as a nod to where it was designed. The Ranger replaced two regional Ranger platforms: the Mazda BT-50-derived model sold in the Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions and the North American model sold in select Latin American markets. When Ford finally released the new Ranger pick-up in 2012, the market was stunned by the larger, roomier and gruntier vehicle, which now in many markets runs up against the Hilux as the vehicle of choice. The Ranger had been produced by Ford in the US for three

decades but fell out of favour with buyers in North America just as the F150 strengthened its position as the leading pick-up in its class. Indeed the Ranger is now fully designed and developed by Ford Australia for global markets and remains one of the best dual-cab utes when it comes to playing both workhorse and lifestyle vehicle. While driving a pick-up used to mean enduring a basic, workman-like interior, the Ranger’s interior is car-like, with air conditioning standard on all variants in the Middle East. Options include leather-trimmed seats, dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control (DEATC), or its electronic shift-onthe-fly (ESOF) 4x4 system, which lets you shift from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive without having to stop the vehicle. Following Ford’s philosophical changes in its designs

in recent years, safety is also focused on, with ABS braking standard, as well as a strengthened bodyshell and multiple airbags. It all adds up to a smoother ride during the work week, while allowing the Ranger to double as a family car after hours. As long as you’re not expecting it ot ride like an S-Class Mercedes, the reduced bounce will be a pleasant change for those used to their pick-ups feeling like bouncing on a jelly. The improved driver comfort doesn’t mean that power has been compromised: buyers have a choice of a 2.5 litre petrol engine, or 2.2- and 3.2-litre diesel engines. The 2.2L diesel puts out 110kW of power, with up 375Nm of torque, ideal for towing loads. The Ranger has three available body styles – Double Cab, RAP Cab and Regular Cab – depending on whether the focus is on carrying passengers or cargo.

A team of Ford heavy-hitters were sent from Michigan to Australia, the designated homeroom for this new-generation global vehicle, even though it is built in Argentina, Thailand, and South Africa. Designer Craig Metros’ last vehicle before the Range was on the F-Series, furthermore vehicle line director Gary Boes had previously worked on the Mustang and Flex, and engineering director Jim Baumbick had worked on 20 Ford models before the Ranger. Ford’s team of experts traveled the globe and examined the primary compact pickup competitors, namely the Toyota Hilux (a rebodied version of the Tacoma), Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi Triton – three popular workhorses in sold in Asia, Europe, and South Africa – and the research shows in the final models that are available here.

By the conclusion of its development Ranger utilised expertise from all points of the globe. It was tested in the Australian outback, in the jungles of Thailand, and on the ice roads of Sweden, and it spent a lot of time in North America doing altitude, durability, and tow testing. The design and product development teams had full access to Ford’s global capabilities, testing facilities and extensive pickup truck knowledge. Using latest computer technologies, the product development team conducted about 30,000 computeraided assessments on areas such as safety, durability, ergonomics, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics during the virtual phase. Of these, 7,500 virtual assessments were carried out in the under-body to ensure a robust vehicle foundation and more than 10,000 virtual assessments on the upper-body to align styling

also raised the beltline significantly, along with the rails of the load box, giving the Ranger a substantive presence on the road while increasing its functionality with the deeper box. According to Ford, the regular cab has the biggest box volume in its class at 1.82 cubic meters and 1.45cubic meters respectively while the Double Cab is among the top with 1.21 cubic meters. At 5,359 mm long and 1,850 mm wide, the Ranger is bigger than the previous-generation model, but remains easily maneuverable on narrow city streets and during parking, thanks to a responsive steering system requiring no more than 3.5 turns of the wheel lock-to-lock - one of the best in the segment. The B-pillar in the double cab has also been moved forward, delivering best-in-class rear leg room and knee clearance. Three adults can easily fit in the second row of the Double Cab with room for more in the rear.

The total automotive aftermarket trade in Dubai was worth US$ 10 billion in 2012, the first time it has ever hit the US$10 billion mark, underlining the city’s importance as the hub of a flourishing international trade route, it told delegates at the Automechanika Academy, on the sidelines of the event. The Dubai Customs figures revealed that the countries of Japan, China and Korea were the largest importing countries, making up 51% of automotive total trade while Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and the Sultanate of Oman made up the top export and re-export markets. A further breakdown reveals that parts and accessories of motor vehicles was the largest importing sector with $133 million or 22% of the total. New pneumatic tyres of rubber for motor cars, trucks and lorries came in next at $117 million while parts for engines made up

another 5% of the total trade. On the export and re-export side, parts and accessories of motor vehicles made up 28%, or $117 million, while new pneumatic tyres for cars, buses and lorries made up another 17% at $608 million. Analysis from research firm Frost & Sullivan estimates that the replacement market for auto parts, tyres and batteries in the GCC is expected to double in size by 2017 over 2012 levels. The report estimates that demand for parts, batteries and tyres would be worth US$ 13.46 billion in 2017 as compared to $ 6.73 billion in 2012 with a CAGR of 14.9 per cent. Passenger vehicles accounted for a majority of this trade, comprising 80% of the market in 2012 at US $5.36 billion. This trend is expected to continue with demand for passenger vehicle components set to reach US $11 billion by 2017. Saudi Arabia and UAE comprise the bulk of

the GCC aftermarket, together representing 82.8% of total demand while Kuwait is the third largest market in the region. One of the strengths of the show is ability to draw both local suppliers and big name international firms. Leading the German participation in Automechanika Dubai 2014 will be a range of international heavyweights. These include the likes of: Liqui Moly, Schaeffler Group, Meyer Glitza, Bosch, Europart, SAF Holland, Blitz Rotary, Rema Tip Top, ZF, Dana, BASF, Kaercher, Jost, BPW, Axalta and Mann+Hummel among others. The Automotive Aftermarket division of Robert Bosch Middle East has announced a 15% growth target across the region for 2014, as the market for aftermarket parts experiences strong growth. Bosch has highlighted the region as the fastest growing

market in the world and is rapidly expanding its scope of operations to meet the demand. “Automechanika Dubai is by far the largest and most influential trade exhibition in the Middle East, providing us with a crucial platform to connect with our existing partners and customers, and to extend new business channels

to important markets across the region,” said Andreas Bodemer, VP for Bosch Automotive Aftermarket, Middle East and Africa. Automechanika is one element to a busy promotional period for Bosch, spearheaded by its series of 30 ‘Sales Blitz’ events targeted at retailers across the region.

“We chose to exhibit in Automechanika Dubai as this event is the window to the Middle East and Africa” “For the last two years Bosch Automotive Aftermarket has enjoyed double digit growth across the region, but rather than rest on our laurels, we want to keep on growing and increase our market share,” said Bodemer. “There are four blocks of success which will take us to our 15% target growth by the end of the year. Firstly we need to increase our visibility by doubling the number of retailers that supply our products. We would also like to increase the number of Bosch service centres by 2015 to 400. The service centres are large consumers of our automotive parts and this strong forward integration can account for more than 20% of the aftermarket parts sales.” Bosch will be joined by fellow heavyweight ZF at the show. Dr Khalid Alexander Sabbah, managing director of ZF Middle East said the company is exhibiting for the fourth year in a row. “We are participating to present our products,” said Sabbah. “Automechanika Middle East underlines the growing recognition of ZF Middle East as a leading supplier for driveline and chassis technology in the region.” Dubai is the principal port of entry for the world’s automotive industry in the Middle East and Europart Middle East’s Zabi Khan, describes it as a gateway to the region. “This event is the window to the Middle East and Africa. Dubai’s easy access to all major markets makes it a gateway to the rest of the near and Far Eastern countries,” he said.

Since opening its Dubai office in 1984, Mineral Circles Bearings (MCB) has enjoyed both the boom and gloom however it has persevered during the downturn to emerge as a major force in the region. Celebrating its 30th anniversary at the show, the company says it now has branches in Sweden, Lebanon, Iraq, Morocco, and India. “Since opening in 1984, we have achieved a humbling level of success. Despite MENA having recently experienced great financial difficulties, MCB has remained resilient and standing,” the company said in the lead up to the event. “By maintaining positive networking with all our suppliers, we have been able to continuously provide for our new and long-term clients even in the most urgent situations.” As the region experiences increases in vehicle turnover, MCB is ready to provide essential bearings to keep cars running smoothly. Manufacturing of Chevrolet and Hyundai model vehicles in Egypt will soon mean 3 million cars in the country’s roads. Automotive market in Iraq is predicted to reach 2 million by 2015 and Syria’s rebuilding requirements will take place. MCB is ready to assist the people in these counties regain their lives by helping them get back on the road. “The bearing market holds many ironies. Being barely noticed, bearings are the silent heroes that make the manufacturing world go round. We are proud to be a big part in helping the MENA region become more productive, efficient, and vibrant in every way.”

Learn the jargon e-parts gives its breakdown of the terms you need to understand the aftermarket. Genuine/OE Genuine or (OE) Original Equipment is basically the original part used by the manufacturer on the car when it left the factory. That part could have been made under contract by an OEM supplier other OEM supplier, for instillation on the new machine. There are many parts like body panels, brake rotors, interior trim items, etc. that are made in the car manufacturer’s own factories, or sometimes factories under contract to produce that product only for the car manufacturer. OEM Original Equipment Manufacturer refers to a part that is manufactured by a company like Bosch, Mann, Hella and others under design from the car manufacturer, like Audi, VW, etc. This part is then made available for sale by the OEM manufacturer, but in that manufacturers packaging. In many instances the car manufacturer’s part number and logo are removed to prevent copyright infringement. OEM Equivalent A part that would be considered an OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer Equivalent would be one that is, for instance, an OEM part for one car company say Saab but not for another car company. A good example of this would be an oil filter for a particular Volvo engine is Mann, however the OEM oil filter for a particular Saab is Mahle. Aftermarket Is just that, something that is made by a supplier other than the OE or OEM manufacturer.

W

hat do you do if you own a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Ferrari FF, Lamborghini Aventador, Aston Martin One-77 and Bugatti Veyron? If you’re the Dubai Police you get yourselves the McLaren MP4-12C. Whether it’s a supercar to chase down hypersonic super villains down the Emirate’s highways or a souped up promotional tool, T&FME would like to commend the taste of Dubai’s law enforcers. Raised on crime busters like James ‘Sonny’ Crocket in Miami Vice we just can’t help but be a little geeked out by having one of the fastest production cars ever produced keeping our streets safe. Clocked at over 333km/h, the follow up to the McClaren F1 (which stopped production in 1998, really is it that long ago?), would beat Sonny’s Testarossa to the cop shop by a desert mile. That car wasn’t a slouch either. The Ferrari Testarossa could accelerate from

0–100km/h in 5.3 seconds and from 0–97 km/h in 5.2 seconds and on to 161 km/h in 11.40 seconds. It could complete a standing kilometre in 23.80 seconds. The maximum speed of the Testarossa was 290 km/h (or 180 mph on a Miami street speed camera). However the MP4-12C is a modern motoring marvel in every sense. McLaren has stated the 12C can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in 9.0 seconds. During independent testing of a stock 2012 12C, DragTimes recorded a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.7 seconds and a quarter mile time of 10.2 seconds at 218.15 km/h – the 3rd fastest verified time for a stock production car at the time. The car has a claimed top speed of 207 mph (or 333 km/h on a Sheikh Zayed Road speed camera) and according to tests by Sport Auto, it even reached 213.2 mph (343 km/h) . It can also brake from 200 km/h to a complete stop in under 5 seconds. Braking from 100 km/h to zero can be done in

under 30m, around seven car lengths. The MP4-12C reflects the development of car production in the 30 years since Miami Vice was aired. McClaren invested $84 million to build the McClaren Production Centre to develop supercars like this. It features a carbon fibre composite chassis, and is powered by a mid-mounted McLaren M838T 3.8-litre V8, twin-turbo engine developing approximately 459 kW; 625 PS= and around 601 Nm of torque - McLaren claimed that it would have a higher horsepower to carbon dioxide emission ratio than any internalcombustion engine available when it was first announced. The car makes use of Formula 1-sourced technologies such as “brake steer”, where the inside rear wheel is braked during fast cornering to reduce understeer. Power is transmitted to the wheels through a sevenspeed seamless shift dual-clutch gearbox. T&FME’s advice is to step aside when you see this beautiful beast in your headlights.
