It was interesting to note that Monster.com had seen such a sharp decline in construction jobs advertised in the kingdom. But I don’t think one can read too much into this: While there may be a temporary decline in recruitment in Saudi Arabia, few can argue that the sheer scale of the country’s ambitions points to a stronger market in the long-term.

Dubai’s RTa To unDeRTake aiRpoRT RoaD expansion FORD TO LAUNcH 30 vEHIcLES IN MEA bY 2020 The upgrades will boost the road’s handling capacity and cut journey time.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded an AED 404 million ($110m) contract to upgrade the Airport Road in the emirate. The upgrades are expected to contribute to increasing handling capacity by an extra 5,000 vehicles per hour, and reduce the journey time on Airport Road from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) to Casablanca Street. A traffic study conducted by the RTA stresses the importance of completing the project by 2017, said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the RTA. “The project comprises the construction of bridges [and] tunnels at Rashidiya and Airport Road interchange with each of Casablanca Street, Marrakech Street and Nad Al Hamar Street. “It also includes improving at-grade

intersections, and constructing a service road of three lanes in each direction to separate the traffic movement from and to Nad Al Hamar from the vehicular flow on the Airport Street, starting from Rashidiya Interchange up to Marrakech Interchange.” The improvement of the Rashidiya Interchange comprises the construction of a bridge on the Airport Road of three lanes in each direction. This is expected to slash the waiting time at the interchange from 13 minutes to less than one minute, the chairman explained. Meanwhile, upgrading the Airport Road – Nad Al Hamar Road Interchange encompasses the construction of an additional bridge of two lanes in each direction, easing traffic snarls.

Ford Motor Company says it plans to launch at least 30 new vehicles in the Middle East and Africa by 2020, as part of a new regional strategy. Ford’s product push will begin with the release of eight new vehicles throughout the MEA by the end of next year, the manufacturer said ahead of the Dubai International Motor Show last month. “The Middle East and Africa spans 67 markets from Saudi Arabia to South Africa, and from Nigeria to Kenya, so customer tastes are as diverse as our markets. We are moving very quickly to expand our range with exciting cars, utilities and trucks,” said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, Europe, Middle East & Africa. With the total MEA car market expected to grow 40% by the end of the decade to 5.5 million vehicles, the car-maker expects its sales in the region to outpace industry growth.

DP WORLD TO TEsT NissAN PAThFiNDER hybRiD AT JEbEL ALi PORT

Dubai-based port operator DP World has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nissan to test the Pathfinder hybrid at the Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. The agreement will see the Japanese automaker supply two Nissan Pathfinder hybrids, to be put to the test to prove their fuel economy and low emission credentials. “We look forward to seeing how much the Nissan Pathfinder will help us reduce our

environmental impact and the potential savings it will bring to our drivers,” said Mohammed Al Muallem, senior vice president and managing director of DP World UAE Region. DP World’s fleet of vehicles at Jebel Ali Port is used to transport staff between the three terminals. Under the agreement, the port operator will test the Pathfinders to track fuel savings and carbon footprint reduction with hybrid vehicles.

The Pathfinder hybrid has a 74L fuel tank, the same as conventional models, and offers a range of 785km on a single tank with fuel consumption of 9.1L per 100km. Also available in four-wheel drive, the SUV has a supercharged 2.5L gasoline engine and an electric motor paired to a compact lithiumion battery. The battery fits under the third row seat so there is no reduction in space for passengers and luggage.

In its report, the Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development urges Gulf countries to curb domestic energy consumption or risk losing out on export revenues that account for up to 90% of government revenues. While oil consumption in the region in 1973 was less than 1% of

global demand, the Gulf nations currently consume 5% of the world’s oil, with just 0.5% of the world’s population. Moreover, the region’s primary energy consumption in the past decade has grown more than twice as fast as the world average of 2.5% per year. “The Gulf countries have to rethink the generous subsidies they have; they will have to look at alternatives,” said H.E. Al Attiyah, Qatar’s former Minister of Energy & Industry and Deputy Prime Minister.

or any business that owns trucks engaged in demanding or heavy-duty applications – such as construction sites, quarries and the like – the likelihood of damage through accidents or rough use is a fact of life. Considering the high investment value of heavy-duty commercial vehicles, getting your fleet repaired at a reputable establishment is crucial. To learn more about how trucks are repaired, Truck & Fleet ME visited the premises of AlFuttaim Auto & Machinery Company (FAMCO), the UAE dealer for Volvo Trucks, for a first-hand look at how a badly damaged vehicle can be made to look as good as new. Outside FAMCO’s workshop in Rashidiya, Dubai, stands a Volvo FH 440 with a shiny white cabin, its front grille gleaming in the sunlight. Less than three months ago, however, it was an entirely different picture. The truck arrived at the dealer’s premises severely out of shape; its entire cabin was twisted to one side and the flooring and chassis were damaged, says Stephen Gonsalves, body shop manager at FAMCO. In an instance like this, an inspection is first carried out on the vehicle and all the details are noted, after which an estimate is prepared, says Gonsalves, who recently celebrated 40 years at FAMCO and has seen thousands of trucks in his career. The estimate is then sent to the customer and his insurance company. If the truck doesn’t need to be written off and repairing it is feasible, the insurance company will approve

the estimate and issue a local purchase order (LPO), after which the repair work can begin. With the truck in question, it was clear that a lot needed to be done, but nothing that the body shop couldn’t handle, Gonsalves says. “When we started the work, we had to take the whole cabin down to do major repairs on it. The front flooring was damaged and had to be replaced, and the back panel also had to be replaced.” The chassis had also undergone some damage, so the engine also needed to be taken out, he adds. While many of the parts located in front of the engine – such as the radiator, intercooler and AC condenser – were damaged, the engine block itself was safe. “When we have damage like this, we bring the truck and we start dismantling all the parts. Once we remove all the surrounding parts and loosen it up, then we take the forklift and we remove the whole cabin.” The cabin of the truck in question was taken down and mounted onto a special frame. “All the major repair is done on that stand because it is like a jig for the truck. When we do anything on that, if it fits perfectly, it will fit perfectly on the truck.” When the cabin is down, the damaged pieces and panels are then cut off and replaced with new fittings. In this case, the entire back panel had to be replaced with a brand new one, Gonsalves points out. The doors too had to be

10 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEMBER 2015

taken out. After that, technicians began the process of fitting the bulkhead in front, and then the flooring was fitted. “We just put it back altogether and did spot welding. We don't do the full welding; we just spot weld.” Once the cabin had been rebuilt and the major work done, it was hoisted back onto the truck. Next, the damaged doors were straightened out and re-painted, after which they were fitted back onto the cabin atop the truck. As nearly all the parts in question were replaced with new ones, it’s difficult to tell the truck has undergone repairs of this extent, Gonsalves says. “In other garages they do a cheap job. What they do is panel beat it. They will repair all

the items, part by part. And after you paint it, you will see it's wobbly, and you won't get that finish of the painting work. You can make out the truck is old.” In the FAMCO premises, there is a total staff of six technicians engaged in truck repair: three denters to do the panel work and three painters. This particular job involved a team of four people, two denters and two painters. After everything had been done, the final step in the process was cleaning the truck and then subjecting it to a road test to see if any further repairs need to be carried out. While customers more often than not see the value of agency repairs on their trucks, the cost can sometimes be a deterrent, explains Farhat Chaudhary, national after-market sales manager,

Truck & Bus Division at FAMCO. “Customers are keen on getting their trucks repaired in the FAMCO workshop and to use our services. But insurance companies are always concerned about the cost, so sometimes there is a conflict between both parties.” Nevertheless, FAMCO has built up a good working relationship with many insurance providers, who are confident in the services the dealer provides, Gonsalves says. After all, customers have the satisfaction of knowing that the repair work is being carried out by experienced professionals, using genuine Volvo parts. The FAMCO workshop in Rashidiya generally has parts availability of 90-95% when a truck comes in for repair or service, Chaudhary says. “Sometimes, if parts are not available, then we have a Volvo central distribution centre in Jebel Ali, which is an additional benefit because it's very close to us." If the part required is not available in the Jebel Ali distribution centre and is urgently required, it can be shipped within three days from the nearest location anywhere in the world. “There is a system that if we require a part in Dubai, then the system will find out where exactly that part is located, and it will arrange to ship directly to Dubai.”

he biennial Dubai International Motor Show is one of the most anticipated motoring events in the Emirates, and this year was no different, with the region’s most popular automotive brands all represented last month. While the established American, European and Japanese manufacturers were out in full force, it was hard to ignore the presence of Chinese brands at the show, keen on tapping into the UAE’s lucrative automotive market. Chinese automakers are actively expanding their overseas footprint, and the Dubai International Motor Show hosted a number of Chinese brands seeking to make inroads into the passenger and commercial vehicles segments in the GCC. Wuhan-headquartered DongFeng Motors (DFM), founded in 1969, is one of China’s biggest automakers. The company, which sold 3.8 million vehicles last year, displayed a line-up of ten models at the show, including the DFM AX7 SUV and the A30, which made their Dubai debut; its flagship Rich pickup; the H30 Cross; the S500 MPV; and a high-mobility off-road vehicle, the Warrior. Last year, DFM exported 70,226 vehicles, obtaining overseas overseas certifications for five passenger models and 30 commercial models. The manufacturer entered the UAE in 2013, partnering with Dubai’s AW Rostamani. Another Chinese manufacturer, GAC Motor, was also at the show. In conjunction with its UAE dealer Gargash Motors, the firm is seeking to expand its market share in the Emirates with

Wu Song, general manager of GAC

Motor.

the introduction of three new second-generation models: the GS4, the GS5 Super and the GA6. “Cars under the GAC Motor’s brand have come to the market after having spent a considerable amount of man hours in our research and development centre,” says Wu Song, general manager of GAC Motor. “We are here at the show to further build our brand recognition. We are keen to grow our presence in the Middle East and the Dubai International Motor Show serves as the right platform to achieve these objectives.” GAC Motor is wholly owned by GAC Group. It expects to sell a total of 180,000 vehicles globally this year and aims to achieve production capacity of half a million in 2017, in response to growing demand. The company’s foray into the international market has been accelerated by an aggressive branding strategy, under which it sponsored the Hollywood movie The Transformers: Age of Extinction last year. “We are here to cater to the mass market's need for mid- and high-end cars. There is a huge demand in that category, and we are closely monitoring this segment and will soon lead this place in the near future,” Wu says. At the show, GAC Motor debuted its flagship model, the GS4 SUV, which outputs 202Nm peak torque from 1,500 to 4,200rpm, with fuel consumption of 6.3L per 100km, according to the manufacturer. Another exhibitor from the Far East was SAIC

Motor, which launched the latest range of models from its Morris Garages (MG) and Maxus brands. The company showcased an LCV line-up under the Maxus marque, which derives its name from the Maxus model of the British commercial vehicle manufacturer LDV Group, acquired by SAIC Motor in 2010. On display at the SAIC Motor stand during this year's show were the Maxus G10 MPV, the V80 minibus and the electric-powered light bus EV80. The new Maxus G10 features a combination of a 2.0T direct injection spark ignition engine and a ZF 6AT transmission with a maximum power output of 225hp, allowing it to easily tackle rough road conditions. While it is an MPV, it can also be sold in a cargo version, says Jolly Yang, director – department of overseas business at SAIC Motor. With a maximum load capacity of 2500L, the G10 can be used by private business owners for in-city deliveries. It has also been widely used as an airport taxi by customers in China, Australia and Southeast Asia, Yang says. In addition to the G10, SAIC Motor also showcased the Maxus V80. A key model for the brand in Middle East, the V80 is equipped with a diesel engine utilising third-generation high pressure common rail technology, delivering maximum power output of 100kW and maximum torque of 330Nm. The Maxus brand has been in the UAE market for over two years and first entered

The Maxus brand entered the UAE market with the V80.

“we are here to cater to the mass market's need For mid- and high-end cars. there is a huge demand in that category and we are closely monitoring this segment” the van segment with the V80, Yang says in an interview on the sidelines of the show. “We have already been succeeding in the high-end private school bus segment, and we are also doing some special purpose vehicles for ambulances, police vans and refrigerated transport applications and so on.” Basic modifications for special purpose vehicles are carried out in China, after which the vehicles are exported to the UAE. Local partners also often carry out modifications, he notes – vehicles to be used as school buses, for instance, are completely modified locally. “For refrigerated vans, we equip them with a dual compressor in China. For ambulances, we do most of the painting and equipment in China.” “For both the G10 and V80, we're targeting fleet customers. The G10 is a popular choice for staff transportation. Besides fleet customers, it would also be a good choice for larger families in the Middle East.” Apart from the UAE, the manufacturer is also expanding its footprint in Saudi Arabia, Oman,

16 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEmBER 2015

Qatar and Lebanon. A core market it will focus on going forward is courier services firms, Yang says. “Those are our biggest customers, and they found that among various suppliers that our maintenance, our durability is much better than not only Japanese brands but also the European brands.” But how does the brand plan to position itself against Japanese rivals, which dominate the LCV segment in the region? Yang notes that Maxus plans to cater to

larger fleet customers with customised solutions, citing an example where a service centre was built near the factory of a large customer in Malaysia, ensuring the customer lost no time in maintenance. “This is our know-how, and we are going to do that in the UAE as well," he says. "We come to every customer with a customised solution. Together with the product, the payment terms, the price, after-sales service as well as the spare parts, it’s a total package.”

Future Plans For the uae SAIC Motor plans to expand its Maxus commercial vehicle lineup over the next few years, and venture beyond the minibus and van segment. The manufacturer plans to introduce a range of pickups in 2017 and will launch an SUV in 2018. The company will also launch a 2.4L manual version of the G10 next year. “In 2019, we are bringing a

totally new generation of the Maxus V80, which will match European standards for not only the emissions but also safety,” Yang says. Emissions are a key focus for the company, he adds, in line with the increased emphasis on sustainability in the UAE as the country gears up to minimise its carbon footprint in the run-up to Expo 2020.

“Considering this, we launched the V80 now in Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards. Even though this drives up the cost, we don’t want to downgrade ourselves just to match the competition. We want to remain a responsible company.” In 2019, the V80 will be launched in a Euro 6 version, he notes.

ith a history going back to 1971, the biennial Busworld Kortrijk is the world’s oldest and most famous bus and coach exhibition. Clocking in with close to 35,000 visitors and 411 exhibitors from 36 countries at this year’s edition, it’s no surprise that the show is a one-stop shop for buses and coaches, bodybuilders, components, accessories and services. True to tradition, Busworld 2015 featured many of the major players in the bus and coach space, and the focus was stronger than ever this year on alternative-drive vehicles, reduced fuel costs and TCO, as well as enhanced driver comfort and safety. SCANiA Swedish heavyweight Scania launched its new Interlink range of buses and coaches in low,

medium and high decker models. The range is the Swedish manufacturer’s largest ever, offering options from city buses to long-distance coaches. The Scania Interlink Low Decker is offered in a full range of engine options, including bioethanol, diesel and biodiesel. The bus exhibited at the show featured Scania’s 320hp Euro 6 gas engine. “We can now offer customers an opportunity to substantially reduce their CO2 emissions in line with the growing awareness of the urgent need to reverse global warming,” says Klas Dahlberg. “Cities around Europe are increasingly restricting the use of diesel and Scania provides the widest range of alternatives.” In line with the focus on alternative fuels, Scania also showcased its hybridised Citywide LE, which is equipped with a 320hp hybrid biodiesel engine. The 12m bus is designed primarily for suburb-to-suburb and suburb-to-city operations. The bus, which uses the Euro 6 powertrain and runs on up to 100% biodiesel, was launched in 2014.

Scania’s hybrid system is part of the manufacturer’s modularised range of powertrains for both buses and trucks, in a wide range of combinations. On the Citywide buses, the hybrid unit, comprising an electric machine (motor and generator) and automatic clutch, is between the engine and the gearbox. The electric machine is rated at 150kW and 1,050Nm. Energy storage of 1.2kWh is provided by a lithium-ion battery integrated in the roof structure at the front of the bus and is housed together with a DC/DC voltage converter and a cooling unit. The hybrid system, together with a DC/ DC converter, stop-start function and eco-roll, contributes towards considerable fuel savings, and with the use of biodiesel provides CO2 savings of up to 90%. The Futura FDD2 coach is available in two lengths: 13m, seating 84 passengers, and 14m, seating 96. Both are three-axle coaches. Under the hood, the VDL Futura FDD2 is also fitted with the DAF MX-13 375 Euro 6 engine, producing 375kW (510hp) and 2500Nm of torque within a 1,000-1,425rpm range. The coach is also equipped with a ZF AS Tronic automatic gearbox. The 4m-high double-decker, which retains the Futura design language, features an aerodynamic front that appears to be a single, curved window, but actually consists of multiple sections to minimise replacement costs in case of damage. In addition to the FDD2, the Dutch manufacturer also showcased a three-door version (1-2-1) of the low-entry Citea LLE-120 for the first time at Busworld 2015. VDL’s Citea city and regional buses are designed to be lightweight, resulting in lower maintenance costs and fuel savings of 10 -20% compared with conventional buses. iVeCo Italy’s Iveco had six vehicles on display at its stand this year at Busworld: the Lounge, a new version of

The Lion’s Intercity has been adapted for use in long-distance transport and shuttle services, and in school bus operations, combining comfort with functionality and safety. At the fair, it was showcased in 12m and 13m versions. MAN’s new generation of safety systems, available for all coaches and intercity buses, includes features such as adaptive cruise control, advanced emergency braking system and lane guard system (LGS). Consistent with its focus on safety, the manufacturer presented an alertness assistant developed for long-distance holiday traffic at the show. The system accesses data from the LGS and, based on stored records, determines whether the driver's attention has decreased and can recommend that the driver take a break.

T

he Mitsubishi Fuso brand has long been an undisputed leader among light-duty vehicles in the UAE. The sheer abundance of Fuso Canter trucks in the Emirates is evidence of the large market share the brand commands in its segment. Despite Fuso’s popularity, however, its vehicles have hitherto been confined to the light-duty segments, with other brands asserting dominance in medium- and heavy-duty applications. That may be about to change, with the introduction of an expanded range of Fuso trucks that sees the brand venture into medium- and heavy-duty workhorses in a series of configurations for a range of missions, including construction, logistics, long-haul and municipal applications. The new range was unveiled to customers and media at an event held in the chilly interior of Ski Dubai, the indoor ski slope in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates.

The icy event saw Al Habtoor Motors, the UAE dealer for the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corporation (MFTBC), launch the FA medium-duty and FJ and FZ heavy-duty trucks. This means Kawasaki-based MFTBC’s product offering now encompasses a complete range of payloads, 3-18t in the rigid range and 40-49t GCW in the tractor range. The newly unveiled Fuso trucks, which no longer bear the familiar Mitsubishi badge on the front, will ensure the brand is poised to cater to the UAE’s growing industrial activity, which has led to increased demand for heavy-duty trucks for special applications. “In the UAE, the Fuso range has already proved its reliability and profitability in various sectors,” says Karl Hamer, managing director of Al Habtoor Motors. “With the all-new robust, fuel-efficient and rugged range, customers will now have a wider choice of quality vehicles for specialist roles, with

significantly lower operating costs. Backed by Al Habtoor Motors’ efficient customer service support, it’s a win-win situation for our customers.”

history The Fuso brand name goes back to 1932, when the name was given to a bus built at the shipbuilding and mechanical engineering factories of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Kobe. In 2003, Daimler AG acquired 43% of MFTBC, gradually increasing its share. In 2011, the German manufacturer acquired a stake of just under 90% in the firm, with various Mitsubishi group companies holding the remaining shares. 2012 saw Daimler open a $1 billion production plant in Chennai, India to manufacture commercial vehicles under the Mercedes-Benz, BharatBenz and Fuso brands. The Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) plant in Chennai will produce the vehicles, which will then be exported to the Middle East, says Roland

Schneider, president and CEO of Daimler Commercial Vehicles MENA. “The new Fuso product line-up gives us an edge over the competition, as we have now a complete commercial vehicle range. "Our new medium-duty trucks incorporate the DNA of the successful Fuso Canter and Fighter models, and the heavy-duty trucks are based on Mercedes-Benz technology. We have carried out extensive development work on these trucks to make them robust, fuel-efficient and comfortable.” Fuso vehicles currently have 70% of the UAE market, Hamer notes, and the dealer is working to ensure that success carries over into the mediumand heavy-duty segments.

New raNge At the event, Al Habtoor Motors unveiled a 4x2 FA model, a 4x2 FZ tractor head and a 6x4 FJ tipper. With a maximum GVW of 9.6t, the FA medium-duty truck chassis can be deployed in a variety of applications, such as cargo body, cargo body with crane, freezer and container. It can also be used for special applications like garbage compactors, skip loaders, tippers, tankers and aerial platforms. The FA series is powered by a common rail turbo with intercooler engines, delivering an output of 100kW (134hp) at 2,500rpm and torque of 420Nm at 1,500rpm. The FA range also features an aerodynamic cab design that saves fuel and reduces cabin

noise. In addition, it provides a high degree of manoeuvrability, and its chassis has been reinforced with heavy-duty suspension to support heavier loads. Developed for long-distance operations, the FZ tractor head is used for high-speed hauling in the 40-49t category of trailers, car carriers and containers. The tractor head, which has a maximum GVW of 16.2t, is powered by a sixcylinder 6.4L engine delivering 170kW (228hp) at 2,200rpm and 810Nm at 1,200-1,600rpm. The engine is mated to a nine-speed transmission. Meanwhile, like the FA, the heavy duty FJ series can be used as cargo body, cargo body with crane, refrigerated transport and logistics, or in special applications like garbage compactor, tipper, skip loader, transit mixer, tanker and aerial platform. The FJ series is powered by an engine delivering 205kW (275hp) at 2,200rpm and 1,100Nm at 1,200-1,600rpm, and features sixspeed / nine-speed overdrive transmission. It has a maximum GVW of 25t. The FJ series is available in 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 configurations. The model on display was a 6x4 truck mounted with a 16cbm tipper, offering maximum gradeability of 62.7 degrees. “Our all-new Fuso trucks have already gained a great reputation in other markets, thanks to their robustness and fuel efficiency. Until now the UAE has been a strong market for FUSO, and I am convinced that the new

vehicles to medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses, Mitsubishi Fuso has a vehicle to suit most commercial requirements. It is a name that has become synonymous with performance, affordability, quality and durability.” GAC customers from Oman were recently presented with an opportunity to visit the DICV manufacturing facility in Chennai for a first-hand look at the entire truck production process. They also got to experience the new trucks on a specialised test track. The GAC Group has represented the Fuso brand in Oman since 1973.

A

successful cold chain is a complex operation and often presents a number of challenges to operators on both the storage and distribution sides of management. The biggest challenge, undoubtedly, is to preserve quality and safety of perishable goods from the point of harvest or manufacture through the supply chain to the consumer. The harsh climatic conditions in the Middle East add additional complexity, urgency and responsibility to the supply chain. A single weak link could result in products being left in an unusable or even potentially dangerous state. Several large freight forwarders and integrators have stepped up their game by investing in state-of-the art warehouses and distribution centres; however, most fall down when it comes to long-haul capability of road transporters, resulting in the majority of perishable products being moved by air in expensive cold containers. The most plausible approach to mitigating risk and better controlling the final outcome is to operate under high standards and adopt stringent operational practices throughout the

entire logistics cycle. Here are the top five best practices that every transport operator needs to implement to provide the smartest, most efficient service possible to clients.

TELEMaTiCs Telematics technology provides the ability to record and constantly monitor in real time a whole range of data via a web portal. This includes engine and driver performance, trailer temperature and payload condition, door openings, tyre pressure, travel time and route progress. In case of irregularities, fluctuations or unexpected events, an immediate alert is sent directly to the user’s PC via SMS, email or a popup window. Real-time information is the real deal in managing F&B fleets efficiently. Data on temperature deviation during transit can only be retrieved at the end of a transport leg, by which time the cargo may have been subjected to temperature fluctuations, resulting in wastage. Telematics can alert management and drivers immediately when the temperature in the trailer is too low or too high, so that they can address the issue then and there. The tracking system should be supported by dedicated customer

dRivER TRaining pRogRaMME Drivers are integral to the business, and it is extremely vital that they have the appropriate knowledge, skills, abilities and attitude necessary to perform competently in a field which is prone to a number of health and safety challenges – be it road accidents or impact on product integrity. Drivers need to be trained on best practices from an organisational, behavioural and technical point of view. The drivers should be able to understand the importance of their role on the road and within the larger supply chain, and how to manage this responsibility on a daily basis.

opTiMisEd RoUTing Route selection is important in order to maximise cold chain performance, especially during the summer season. In extreme temperatures, companies should select routes that minimise the number of times doors must be opened.

In the event of a breakdown or equipment failure, the transport operator must be able to respond quickly. Even with the best systems and monitoring technology, an unplanned delay or rerouting could jeopardise shipment stability. The operator should prepare for and set a tested strategy that clearly maps out emergency plans in the event of a delay.

I t is essential that the fleet operator maintain fleet and equipment routinely, to avoid unnecessary and unavoidable breakdowns of equipment or vehicles. This proactive approach to maintenance reduces or eliminates the risk of perishable cargo spoiling as a result of a vehicle being stranded en route.

From million-dollar deals to a vintage Fire truck, the Big 5 this year had it all and more. Jerusha sequeira reports

t

he buzz in the air was virtually palpable at the Middle East’s largest building and construction show, The Big 5, which returned to Dubai last month. The 2015 edition of the show was bigger than ever, with organisers expecting an estimated 85,000 participants. This year, The Big 5 was co-located with Middle East Concrete (MEC) and PMV Live at the Dubai World Trade Centre, where it ran from November 23-26. The exhibition was officially inaugurated by H.E. Dr Rashid Amhad bin Fahad, UAE Minister of Environment and Water. About 3,000 companies exhibited at the event, and participants came from across the world. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, India, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt and Pakistan were the top countries by representation. “While other events in the region may focus on real estate or property development, The Big 5 spans the entire construction industry,” says Nathan Waugh, event director of MEC and PMV Live.

“With tighter budgets and greater demand on profit margins, the chance to be able to witness products, technologies, heavy machinery and other equipment is important.” This year, The Big 5 featured 75 free CPD-certified workshops and seminars worth $250,000 to the industry – the show’s largest ever education programme – alongside a series of live product demonstrations. Education aside, the show also saw business transactions worth millions of dollars and a number of companies securing contracts, organisers said. One of them was Polish company Techmatik, which signed a $2.7 million deal with Dubai’s Consent LLC for the purchase of a concrete block machine. Italy-based MB Crushers also said it sold two of its crushers with a combined value of $85,000 to a Saudi company. As one of the region’s most important shows for the construction industry, The Big 5 and PMV Live once again attracted heavyweights from the commercial vehicle sector, which displayed vehicles built to tackle construction applications. said Noas al rawi, CeO of Bion Group. as part of its expansion, Bion industrial has added new models to its existing line-up: the B 460, B 240 and B 320, with capacities of 46m3, 24m3 and 32m3 respectively. The B 460 and B 240 tipper trailers have been developed to transport bulk abrasive materials such as sand, gravel, aggregate, rubble and debris. The B 320 has been designed for greater impact bearing capacity and elasticity, combined with a curved bottom design for quick material discharge. The manufacturer also launched the CB 520 cement bulker, manufactured to be 3t lighter than others in the same market category.

was Ford Trucks, participating for the second time, in conjunction with its UAE dealer Al Tayer Motors. The company unveiled its 2016 model year heavy commercial vehicles, displaying an 1843T tractor, a 3535M 6x4 chassis mixer and a 4135M 8x4 chassis mixer. Last year, Ford Trucks partnered with Al Tayer Motors to enter the UAE market and opened new showrooms in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Since then, the brand has been looking to significantly increase its share in the UAE heavy commercial market with tipper, mixer and tractor sales. “The Middle East is a priority region in Ford Trucks’ growth plans. Following the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where we launched our new facilities last year, we plan to expand our sales and service network into Oman, Qatar, Bahrain

and Iraq markets,” said Emrah Duman, Ford Trucks international markets director. “We believe our product line-up is well ahead of the competition, offering solutions to different market needs, such as a hot climate package specially developed for the GCC region and complete truck solutions for all Middle East markets.” Ford Trucks’ hot climate package provides increased air conditioner performance along with an improved radiator and filtration. The package is offered across the entire product lineup for GCC markets. The manufacturer is also looking to attract customers with its after-sales offering: UAE customers can avail of a three-year/unlimited km standard warranty.

“Our expanded network will provide customers with a strong service support and spare parts availability in the near future. We are confident that our products and growing network will lead to stronger presence of Ford Trucks in the region,” Duman said. The Ford Trucks models on display at the stand this year – the 1843T tractor, the 3535M (6x4) and the 4135M (8x4) mixer – can be customised with transmission and cabin modules for on-road and off-road conditions. Tractors and construction vehicles from Ford Trucks’ mixer series for construction applications are offered in 6x4 and 8x4 versions with a 345hp engine, while the mixer capacity ranges between 7.7 and 12.7m3. Meanwhile, the 1843T tractor model is presented with a 10.3L 424hp Euro 3 engine. Germany’s MAN Truck & Bus was also at the exhibition, marking a hundred years manufacturing commercial vehicles (covered in detail in Truck & Fleet ME’s November issue). “It is a great honour for us to celebrate our hundred-year milestone together with our local Importer United Motors and Heavy Vehicles,” said Franz von Redwitz, managing director of MAN Truck & Bus Middle East.

Ford Trucks exhibited for the second time at PMV Live.

To mark its century of manufacturing, MAN showcased at its stand a firefighting truck manufactured in 1961, alongside three construction vehicles from its current range and also the MAN TGX, set to be launched by the end of next year. The MAN 520 L1 4x2 historical fire fighting vehicle, which operated in Germany until the late 1980s, was shipped to the UAE and fully refurbished by Darwish Bin Ahmed and Sons, MAN´s importer in Abu Dhabi. The truck has maximum power of 120hp and is equipped with an extendable ladder, operated manually. The cabin inside, including a bench at the back, is wooden and accommodates six firefighters. Also on display at the stand was the Euro 5 TGX 6x4 tractor head, greener and more powerful, with an output of up to 540hp. With a GVW of 33t and GCW of 180t, the truck is geared towards the demands of construction and long-haul applications. The MAN TGX, which has been fully adapted for the local market, will offer enhanced fuel efficiency and significantly reduced emissions. Series delivery of this type will be launched late next year. One of the highlights of the current range

on display was the German manufacturer’s most robust vehicle, the TGS 41.480 8x8, designed for rough off-road conditions and applications including oilfields, maintenance of high voltage cables and construction crane operations. Other trucks from the current range on display were a TGS 40.360 6x4 mounted with a 9cbm concrete mixer, and a TGM 18.240 4x4, equipped with a cargo body and crane for offroad works in difficult terrain. At The Big 5 show, MAN, in partnership with Microlise also launched its new telematics system MAN EcoStyle for the Middle East, developed to improve fleet performance. The system enables transport operators to improve driving standards, reduce wear and tear and boost safety. It also helps fleet owners and operators cut back on operating costs, emissions and fuel consumption. “From a construction standpoint, what sets us apart is our expertise in meeting the varying transportation needs of the industry, including special application vehicles. MAN has a successful track record in this sphere,” von Redwitz says. “Looking at the needs of our customers, we felt it was also the right time to launch our MAN EcoStyle fleet management solution.”

number of Toyota Camry hybrid taxis across the UAE and is in line with its objective of reducing pollution from transport, the company said. “The Toyota Prius is the car that started it

all in 1997, introducing the future of sustainable mobility and driving Toyota to the top of the environmentally friendly vehicles game,” said Len Hunt, president Automotive Group at Al-Futtaim. “With this fourth generation, the new 2016 Prius delivers a target fuel efficiency of at least 40km/L, and we are confident that it will usher in a generation of change in UAE mobility.” With sales hitting 3.5 million units worldwide, the Prius’ hybrid technology combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The vehicle requires no additional road and transport infrastructure, as the cars do not need to be externally charged, noted Koji Nagata, general manager, Toyota Middle East and North Africa Division. The Prius can be powered by the petrol engine, the electric motor or a combination of both. The new Prius comes with an entirely new Toyota platform, resulting in improved handling and safety. The chassis is 60% more rigid, while the powertrain unit’s lower placement and low centre of gravity has increased the vehicle’s stability and comfort, the manufacturer says.

Renault tRucKS t tanKeR fOR HazaRdOuS gOOdS Renault Trucks has developed a tanker version of its Renault Trucks T vehicle, awarded International Truck of the Year 2015. The T Tanker is a specific solution designed for customers carrying hazardous materials, perishable goods and chemical products. In order to make unladen weight as low as possible and thus increase payload capacity, the Renault Trucks T Tanker is fitted with aluminium rims, air and fuel tanks, as well as a lightweight fifth wheel. Furthermore, a number of non-essential elements such as door extensions have been eliminated, the manufacturer said. As far as load and driver safety are concerned, the T Tanker also features a new tyre pressure monitoring system as standard.

QuicK tiPS Stay cool on the road by following these HVAC maintenance tips: 1. Ensure your vehicle’s air-conditioning system is regularly inspected. Even small leaks or damaged components can damage the entire system, increasing repair bills and downtime. 2. If you notice a leak, do not use any leak fixing products. They are only a temporary fix and can increase repair bills due to excess debris in the system. 3. A dirty or clogged air filter dramatically reduces airflow into the cab and can cause bad odours. Replace the filter regularly.

ZaFCo ExhibiTs aT sEMa UAE-based tyre distributor ZAFCO showcased two new patterns at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas: the all-season Zeetex ZT3000, an eco-friendly alternative in the PCR category, and the Accelera Delta Sport, the brand’s first racing tyre. The firm also displayed a wide range of patterns in the PCR, TBR, SUV and Winter categories.

4. Keeping your condenser free of debris ensures it will maintain a perfect cooling temperature in your cab. Check and clean your condenser regularly. 5. A faulty blower motor will reduce or even stop airflow to your cab. If you notice decreased airflow or hear a buzzing, grinding or humming sound when turning on the A/C, take your truck for an inspection. Source: Alliance Truck Parts

OMAn’s sOhAR PORT TO lAunCh TRuCk APPOInTMEnT sysTEM Truck drivers calling at the Sohar Port and Freezone in Oman will soon be able to schedule collection and delivery of cargo through a new truck appointment system to be launched this month at the Oman International Container Terminal (OICT). “The truck appointment system will provide time and cost savings for logistics service providers and the broader Omani economy. Perhaps the biggest benefit will be the ability for drivers to monitor traffic flows remotely and schedule their arrival,” said Albert Pang, CEO of OICT. “This extra visibility should lead to better traffic flow in the port and on local roads, as well as fewer

empty trips between Muscat and Sohar.” The OICT, a joint venture between the Omani government and UK-based Hutchinson Port Holdings, has invested $184 million in developing terminal operations at Sohar. Oman’s logistics sector has grown rapidly in the past decade, and aims to create 80,000 jobs by 2020. The new truck appointment system is expected to make the industry more competitive and has been designed with end users in mind, Pang said. Drivers will have three options to book arrival times at the port: a mobile app, a website and an IVR (Interactive Voice Recognition) number.

N

ovember is an exciting month for motorsport enthusiasts in the UAE, with events like the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix giving fans the opportunity to witness F1 stars battle it out on the circuit. Away from the much publicised action in the UAE capital, however, Dubai also offered motorsport enthusiasts the chance to see some racing action off the track, in the form of the Dubai International Rally 2015. The race, which kicked off on Friday, November 20, saw 17 rally drivers compete for the title, with UAE’s Sheikh Khalid Bin Faisal Al Qassimi clinching his third win at the event. Al Qassimi beat Qatari drivers Abdulaziz Al Kuwari and Khalid Al Suwaidi, who bagged second and third place respectively. Al Qassimi and co-driver Chris Patterson,

in their Citroen DS3 RRC, finished the 12-stage rally in 1 hour, 58 minutes and 41 seconds. The Abu Dhabi team leader’s first-day lead of 1 minute 44 seconds was cut short by Al Kuwari in the second day’s stages, with the Qatari closing the gap to 57 seconds. “After leading the race on the first

day, I decided to change my strategy to a more defensive one as I didn’t want to put unnecessary pressure on the car, and I was able to maintain the lead without any serious problems,” Al Qassimi said. Commenting on the close competition and battle for the title, second place finisher Al Kuwari said: “I was able to lead all the stages on day two, but the tyre problem I faced yesterday affected the final result, as the time I lost made it hard to catch up with the leader.” Held under the patronage of Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, president of the UAE National Olympic Committee, the Dubai International Rally is one of the main attractions of the third Dubai Motor Festival. The 12 rally stages stretch across 1,000km, with up to 255km of special stages.
