FOREWORD

WELCOME Welcome to the 2018 Truck Book which is being published at a fascinating time for the commercial vehicles industry in the region. The past few years have proven highly challenging for fleet owners as well as manufacturers and distributors in the Middle East but there are signs that the market situation is beginning to improve – suggesting now is the time for companies to start re-investing in their fleets. With rail development slowing, the highways are once again being valued for their roles in powering trade across the region. National strategies to improve road safety and logistics networks present opportunities to companies considering renewing their fleet. So does changing emissions standards in some markets with the UAE leading the way. As it nears the standards of technology and fleet management seen elsewhere in the world, the region is also being identified as an important, progressive market for the makers of vehicles and fleet software and systems. Many of the new vehicles highlighted in this year’s edition will have been tested here before launch and to a level which has never been seen before. Consequently, we can hope to see many new vehicle ranges and models launching in 2018 – possibly more than we have ever experienced in the region. If you are preparing for growth, it is our hope that the 2018 Truck Book can help you to prepare for an exciting new chapter in your business’ own story.

The versatile seating arrangement allows the rear seating rows to be easily folded into over 30 different configurations or completely removed to suit any occasion. The Tourneo Custom also features an enhanced restraint system, which provides curtain airbags as standard for the front seat occupants, together with driver and passenger airbags and seat-mounted side thorax airbags. Tourneo Custom also offers three ISO child seat fixings, which makes it the safest people mover in the market. The powertrain is an improved version of Ford’s latest 2.2l Duratorq TDCi turbo diesel engine which combines outstanding performance and refinement with exceptional fuel efficiency. The Tourneo Custom is available in the region with two power ratings: 100PS and 125PS. Featuring a sixspeed manual transmission the powertrain delivers class-leading fuel consumption of 15 km/l. At 310Nm and 350Nm, its engine also produces class-leading torque figures in either engine configuration. Commercial truck customers all have different uses for their F-Series Super Duty, which is why Ford goes to extraordinary lengths to satisfy as many needs as possible. With second to none payload and towing capability combined with best-in-class horsepower and torque, Ford is delivering again with the all-new 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty Pickups and Chassis cab – the toughest,

smartest, most capable Super Duty ever. Ford’s second generation 6.7l Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel that powers Super Duty now delivers a best-in-class combination of 446PS horsepower and a staggering 1,254Nm. of torque. That power is standard for every pickup without requiring special tuning or unique hardware. The standard 6.2l V8 petrol engine now offers best-in-class torque among gasoline engines of 583Nm, with standard 390 horsepower. Both diesel and gasoline engines are backed by the TorqShift six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission for reliable and efficient towing. The all-new Chassis cab lineup is optimized to help commercial customers be more productive on the job. The frame is also the toughest, strongest, most rigid frame ever used in a Super Duty chassis cab. It features 95% high-strength steel with eight times more torsional rigidity than the previous frame, through-welded crossmembers, and fully boxed rails under the cab and forward for strength and safety. Using advanced materials, Ford is saving up to 160kg in the F-Series Super Duty reinvesting that savings into tougher, stronger components. For the first time, the body uses high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy throughout the cab, which improves dent and ding resistance while saving weight for significant increases in towing and payload capability. In addition to the heavier-duty fully boxed frame under the cab, many
components are more robust, including axles, suspension, driveline and towing hardware. The Ford Ranger remains one of the most capable and versatile mid-size trucks in its class. Customers can choose from three body styles: two-door regular cab, four-door Double Cab and Super Cab (only available in some regions) with additional rear-hinged doors accessing second-row seating. Each bodystyle provides a rugged load box with a generous load volume. Ford Ranger pickups offer a bold new look, cutting-edge technologies and enhanced diesel engines that deliver outstanding fuel efficiency and performance, the power and drivetrain lineup consist of a 3.2l diesel (200PS / 470Nm) six-speed auto 4x4; 2.2l diesel (150PS / 375Nm) six-speed auto or manual 4x2 or 4x4; 2.5l petrol (163PS / 226Nm) five-speed manual 4x2 or 4x4. A robust electronically controlled transfer case allows drivers in 4x4 models to shift on the fly from 4x2 to 4x4 High. For low-speed torque or additional downhill braking, drivers also can engage low-range 4x4 gearing, while an electronic locking rear differential helps to improve traction in difficult conditions. These off-road strengths are matched by a 1,360kg (maximum payload depends on model) payload and 3,500kg towing capability. Other advanced features include Sync 3, cruise control, navigation with full colour multi-function 8” display, making Ranger one of the most advanced trucks on the road.

Isuzu Trucks

FINDING THE BEsT sOLuTION One of Isuzu’s strength has always been adding products that can answer customer demands and provide the best solution for their businesses.
Isuzu Trucks B eing one of the most visible lightand medium-duty commercial truck brands in the GCC, Isuzu needs no introduction to the region. One of the earliest entrants in the region’s commercial trucking sector, Isuzu today is among the top brands in the segments it operates in throughout the Middle East, and the outright market leader in some countries in the region. Behind this performance is an expertise in diesel engines and a legacy of excellence in manufacturing that is more than a hundred years old. Founded in 1916, Isuzu Motors has the longest history of any Japanese vehicle manufacturer. Down the years, the company has consistently focused on “creation without compromise” in the process of building Isuzu into the company it is today, which is boldly taking up the challenge of global leadership in commercial vehicles and diesel engines while maintaining its tradition of Japanese dedication to quality, attention to detail and technological innovation. Isuzu believes that commercial vehicles and diesel engines are essential
to supporting people’s lives globally as they move things and provide power. The company is proud that by expanding its operations across the globe from Japan, Isuzu products now benefit people in over 100 countries. After more than a century of excellence, Isuzu says that it is constantly moving forward with an uncompromising commitment to product development, quality, advanced manufacturing systems and customer support to ensure the most advanced safety, economic and environmental performance as well as service standards. More than 80 years have passed since the first Isuzu truck was pulled out of its factory in Japan, an event that marked the start of Isuzu’s steady rise to its current prominence both as Japan’s best-selling truck manufacturer and as a major force for innovation that is helping to lead the global truck industry. In this time, the company has built over 26 million diesel engines and has earned a reputation of being a manufacturer with a technological edge, which has kept setting the pace for the industry in developing fuel-efficient,
low-emission and powerful diesels. As a result, Isuzu has excelled over other companies in innovations such as the introduction of direct-injection systems and turbocharger incorporated with an intercooler, as well as electronically controlled common-rail high pressure fuel injection systems. The excellent reliability and durability of Isuzu engines has earned them many plaudits, such as making them the first and only choice for the Japanese national expedition to Antarctica. Today, Isuzu has a global diesel vehicle supply network that encompasses Europe, North America, Japan and other parts of Asia. Other than Isuzu, no diesel manufacturer in the world has such a global production and sales network. The global production network has been further enhanced by two overseas research and development subsidiaries in the US and Germany, backed up by Isuzu R&D in Japan, which contribute to effective development of diesel engines to satisfy the requirements of markets across the globe. Isuzu’s exploits closer to home in the Middle East are no less significant.
The brand is doing extremely well in the light commercial vehicle sector in the region, capturing the numero uno position in Saudi Arabia and steadily growing its market share to become one of the top brands in its segments in other countries such as Oman and UAE. In the UAE, a market which Isuzu entered in 1982 in partnership with Genavco, the company has steadily grown its market share to become among the most successful light-duty vehicle brands, especially with its N-series range, says Anton Du Plessis, General Manager for Isuzu at Genavco, the exclusive dealer in the UAE. “We also offer medium-duty vehicles and our D-Max pick-up truck range, both of which are very successful in the market. Durability, reliability and fuel economy are the three hallmarks of Isuzu vehicles,” Du Plessis adds. Speaking about the future he says that with the UAE commercial vehicles sector moving to Euro 4 emission standards from 2018, as mandated by law, Isuzu is doing its upmost to support this initiative for cleaner vehicles.
Isuzu Trucks
24
sTrONG rEPuTATION Isuzu has built a strong reputation in the region and its range has steadily increased its market share in the GCC.
“We respect and fully support the vision of the UAE leadership to make the country a leader in the region in terms of emission standards. Isuzu is bringing in its Euro 4 compliant vehicles this year and the sophistication levels of our vehicles to be sold in the region from now on will be very high. While the new Euro 4 regulations and the UAE’s new value added tax will have an impact on the cost of Isuzu vehicles in 2018, our value proposition will remain as high as ever,” Du Plessis explains. “We believe that our product is among the very best in the segments we are in and the testimony for it is that many fleet owners are very happy with our products. At the end of the day, cost of ownership is key to the success of any fleet operator. He wants to reduce his costs as much as possible. Anything from fuel, parts and service to downtime - wherever he can minimise on the cost per kilometre of operation, he will take it. “Isuzu being one of the world leaders
in engine technology, our vehicles have extremely fuel-efficient engines. For any operator, if he cares about fuel economy, our product definitely is ahead of the pack. Of course, this region is perceived to have a culture that does not care too much about fuel consumption, but if you’re concerned about your operating costs, that’s one element you need to look at, because 30% of a typical fleet’s operating cost is fuel. While parts, service and labour costs are all valid considerations, fleet operators need to look at the revenue that a vehicle is generating for them and that is where Isuzu shines, backed up in the UAE market by Genavco, part of the hugely respected Juma Al Majid group and a name as reliable as Isuzu. For the market here, Genavco is Isuzu. The future for Isuzu in the region is all about expansion of its range and services. The company is planning to introduce a line of compressed natural gas-powered trucks to the region this year, especially in the UAE.
“As the UAE moves towards cleaner fuels, CNG is one of the options that is not only available in this area but also provides a cleaner source of energy,” says Du Plessis. “Our competition will offer you a hybrid vehicle when it comes to that segment of the market, which may be part electric, but is still dependent on diesel, defeating the objective of cutting out diesel emissions. The CNG vehicles in our lineup will offer a much cleaner alternative.” With Isuzu’s quality well-known in the region, the brand has steadily increased its market share in the GCC. Building on this success, the next step for the company is to introduce its heavy trucks in the region. Du Plessis says: “Isuzu has obviously got the presence and the reputation in the market on which to base its model range expansion. Wherever you look in the light- and medium-duty sector in the GCC, you see Isuzu trucks running around. Popularising their heavier trucks in the region is the next goal for Isuzu in the Middle East.”

REGIONAL REACH IVECO operates two offices in the Middle East region and its major markets include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Egypt and Qatar. It also entered the Kuwait market in 2018 via Kaico in 2017.
IVECO I VECO’s presence in Africa and Middle East draws on an important and rich heritage dating back to the Fiat 682. Since that truck first launched in Africa in the early 1960s, the brand has always been synonymous with reliability and quality. Today, thanks to a full range of commercial vehicle, IVECO is able to fit every mission from urban and international delivery, freight transportation to construction and quarry sectors. Today, IVECO has two offices in the Middle East: one in Cairo and a second located in Dubai. Supporting the regional operation is a fully dedicated team at its headquarters in Turin, Italy. The region is growing in importance at IVECO and it is expecting its presence in the Middle East and Africa to grow substantially in the near future. “We are proud to say that our after sales service is reaching a very high level. Our customers can be sure to be followed by teams with high professionalism and our improved warranty conditions on Heavy Trucks,” says Marco Torta, Iveco’s GCC area sales manager. “Fundamental to this expansion are three main pillars of support for customers:
premises, processes and people.” In 2017, IVECO invoiced more than 2,000 units in the Middle East with its major markets in the region including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Egypt and Qatar. It is also focusing on opportunities in the Kuwait market where, in November 2017, Kaico, a leading automotive and auto products distributor, proudly launched IVECO as the leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles and vans in that market. IVECO is the only manufacturer in the world that covers all sectors of light, medium, heavy, special on-road and off-road vehicles through just one brand. According to the company, its unique offer enables it to produce: “Strong and resistant vehicles for every load and every mission; reliable quality that won’t let you down when you have completed a job; modern and powerful engines for a safe and rewarding drive; consumption and operating costs that support fleet profitability; and European technology recognised around the world.” Due to the wide line-up offered, IVECO is able to cover all the main segments of the region from mining and
quarrying to construction, logistics and transport, public and munipality works. Its extensive heavy range represents IVECO’s core business in all the main markets of the Middle East. As the needs of fleets are changing so are are the types of vehicles required and IVECO’s off-highway and on-highway ranges offer a superior choice for fleet owners. IVECO is particularly strong in both the off-road construction segment (comprising tippers, pumps and cement mixers) with the ‘Trakker’ and the ‘Astra’ models and the on-road segment for long haulage distribution with the ‘Performer’ and the flagship ‘Stralis’. IVECO is also strong in the waste management segment and the general municipality business where the ‘Eurocargo’ range between 12t and 18t GVW is the real answer to their mission requirements. Medium and light ranges are gaining a more relevant role in the market, leading IVECO to experience constant growth among UAE customers. The new Daily Hi-Matic will be available in the near-future for Euro 5 markets including the UAE and is equipped with a car-like automatic gearbox
that will enrich an already large Daily range that offer covers the 3.5t to 7.5t segment with panel van and chassis cab models. An already impressive line-up of vehicles will be further bolstered by the arrival of the new Stralis X-Way in the Middle East in 2018. “IVECO will be proud to launch the new On- and Off-Road Stralis X-Way range in the Middle East,” says Torta. “The Stralis X-WAY raises the stakes in light off-road missions with the biggest payload in its segment. It combines the best of IVECO’s fuel-efficiency and safety technologies with the legendary off-road robustness of its toughest vehicles to deliver high productivity with low total cost of operation (TCO).” The switch to a new emissison standard also represents a major opportunity for IVECO in the UAE with customers benefitting from a wider power range especially in light and heavy trucks, adds Torta. “They will have the possibility to improve their business with more missions and more versatile vehicles, always closer to the European Market,” remarks Torta. “To give you a few examples: we expect a strong improvement in IVECO’s presence

EXPANDING RANGE 2018 will see several major additions to an already large choice of vehicles for fleet owners, including the new Stralis X-WAY and the Daily Hi-Matic Euro 5 version in the UAE market.
on garbage collection missions thanks to the exceptional features of the Stralis X-Way. Also, in the heavy range the Trakker 410hp model will be available to regional customers. “Additionally, in the light range, there will be much more choice in terms of engine power and innovation with the Daily HiMatic Euro 5 version. This represents the first 8-speed automatic gearbox in the industry and is designed to deliver the best in comfort and safety for specific missions and segments such as: delivery, municipality and ambulance vehicles. In Europe, the Daily Hi-Matic represents 30% of Daily sales and has improved our market share versus big competitors like Mercedes.” Product quality is a key factor in its ranges and IVECO products are designed to raise productivity while further reducing TCO, and minimising running costs. What’s more, the whole range is ready for conversion and ready for any mission. IVECO products are designed in order to control the TCO
starting from the engine to transmission with technologies aimed to improve fuel efficiency and extend maintenance intervals. Beyond the products is a widespread and professional network ready to provide aftersales support and financing. Additionally, IVECO’s regional workshops provide maintenance, repairs and spare parts and are well-equipped for customers and are run by highly qualified staff. “The ultimate objective of a commercial vehicle is to be always on road, and running. It is an objective that we share, and that drives our service policy,” explains Torta. “All IVECO services (from financing to maintenance, from assistance to repair) are conceived to increase uptime and boost business profitability. The client is first and we want IVECO drivers to feel they are always protected by a trusted partner, especially across vast and demanding regions. With its integrated service and parts system, IVECO is a working man’s best friend.” Looking ahead IVECO is looking to build on its progress in the region, says Torta.
“In a challenging year related to the economic and social situation in Middle East overall, with the price of oil still not picking up to the expected level I must say that we are pleased of our results,” says Torta. “We have registered an improvement in sales of approximately 20% with signs of recovery in most markets. In 2018, if the overall economic situation picks up – and also thanks to the constant work we have done with our partners – we can finally get volumes fully in line with the potential of the region. “Our aim in 2018 is to consolidate our leadership in the Gulf area and keep growing in the rest of the Middle East following a strong start in Kuwait. We want to improve light range sales considering the large size of the existing market. We are focussing on each country in order to satisfy our customer needs with tailor made solutions. The perfect vehicle for all customer needs is our main goal. Our work starts when the customer buys a vehicle – this is a must for us.”

On ThE TECh TrACk MiX Telematics provides solutions for logging, managing and analysing data to increase safety and efficiency in fleet management.
MIX TELEMATICS A global leader in the vehicle tracking and fleet management industry, MiX Telematics began operations in South Africa in 1995. Using advanced GSM-based tracking technology to provide vehicle recovery and personal safety services, it soon became one of the leading vehicle tracking and stolen vehicle recovery service providers in South Africa. The company set up its operations in the Middle East region in 2002 and has gained considerable traction in the region’s market. It currently runs a self sufficient operation in the region consisting of sales, service, support and other critical functions, which require over 50 full time staff. MiX Telematics boasts a strong network throughout the Middle East that delivers on-ground in-country sales, service and support. “We pride ourselves in partnering with companies that can represent our
brand values in their respective countries,” said Brodie Von Berg, Sales & Marketing Director, MiX Telematics. “The real scope and scale of our services is the dealer channel network we have built in over 120 countries around the world.” MiX Telematics’ customers in the region come from across a number of industries, including logistics, construction and oil and gas, with the most successful segment for the company being commercial vehicle operators seeking safety and performance improvements. Using the software-asa-service (SaaS) delivery model, MiX Telematics’ products and services are designed to aid customers in improving safety, efficiency, security and compliance. “Every fleet operator is exposed to the risk of a motor vehicle crash, the risk of becoming uncompetitive due to above average operating costs, the risk of loss from security failures and process failures. We address the specific requirements of each customer and deliver
on our value proposition with best-in-class customer service,” stated Von Berg. Among the products that MiX Telematics released late last year is MiX Journey Management - a comprehensive electronic journey risk management solution that integrates with a company’s fleet management platform. The solution is designed for fleet operators seeking an easy and automated way to keep their drivers, passengers and cargo safe and secure, while reducing business risk related to journeys. “MiX Journey Management integrates fully with our Fleet Manager solution for managing driver and vehicle performance and safety through the use of IVMS technology. It replaces tedious paper-based journey management processes as well as the need for operators to develop their own in-house solutions,” said Von Berg. The solution addresses journey risk exposure in a broad business sense: from the protection of drivers, passengers and cargo to business reputation around

service quality and compliance factors. The solution also takes into account the impact journeys may have on the environment and the surrounding community. “Another product recently released is our MiX Insight Agility reporting system,” Von Berg explained. “We recognised that managing big data for our customers is a tedious task. Generating reports can be bittersweet. They are business-critical but sometimes frustrating to compile and tedious to set up. Creating layouts with trends and graphical information can also be time-consuming. MiX Telematics is taking reporting to the next level with MiX Insight Agility. The suite allows for dynamic data interaction in Microsoft Excel. Unlike static reports, users finally have the power to create and shape reports in the format they prefer.” With the construction sector in the Middle East increasingly embracing big data and a digitised analytical approach, MiX Telematics has been able to return healthy growth figures in its regional business despite the slowdown in the Middle East market due to the oil price impacting new infrastructure projects. “We have fared well in the region in the face of all challenges and are continuing to support our customers to increase efficiency and further reduce their fleet operating expenses. It is always a compliment to have long term customers who see us more as a fleet partner than a technology vendor,” Von Berg said. Looking ahead, he expects continued

growth across all of the GCC countries as companies invest in telematics to ensure the safety of their drivers along with the goal of achieving better efficiencies in their fleet. “We need to keep expanding our reach through our dealer channel partners into new territories to provide an even larger footprint for our customers regardless of the location of their operations. “Being a truly global organisation, our customers can rely on us regardless of the location of their fleet. We need to ensure that the required support is close at hand,” he said.

One of the company’s main goals in 2018 is to grow its dealer channel partner network and continue to innovate in its solution offerings to remain at the forefront of the industry. And innovative new product launches are expected to help keep the momentum going. “We will continue to assess the macro and micro changes in the market and how these changes impact our customers. SPEED GULF T he family group of businesses headed by Sanjay Aggarwal and his sons Hitesh and Ishan was first established in 2006 and has been successfully investing in new ventures ever since. The crown jewel within the group remains its first venture, the Abu Dhabi-based Super Cement Manufacturing, but this has subsequently been joined by a series of other successful businesses including its ductile iron steel pipe plant, a lime manufacturing company, a school, a trading house and its entry into transportation in December 2016. Despite starting barely over 12 months ago with just two employees and no experience in the industry, the transportation unit, Speed Gulf General Transportation, has managed to grow to a fleet of 60 units – all of which are running successfully. Leveraging the group’s experience of growing businesses, Speed Gulf has already established the UAE and Oman as major markets and it has recorded rapid growth in the transportation of cement, stone, clinker and raw slag ensuring they have become key earning segments. The team at Speed Gulf General Transportation
has continued to grow and today it employs 72 drivers (all with a minimum of five years of experience in the UAE) supported by a team of 14 skilled and highly-experienced personnel which oversee the operation, accounting, service and key coordination of the fleet. Among the biggest advantages of Speed Gulf General Transportation are its service, the transparency it ensures for its clients and its 24/7 operations team which makes sure cargo is received on time. The company will also provide job-based solutions for customers and is always willing to create the infrastructure required to get the job done. Speed Gulf General Transportation enables customers to track their set of trucks through a unique login ID. The software for the tracking and the training to operate the system is provided by the company and the software helps the customer to save time and plan their operations in an efficient manner. Should there be a breakdown of the unit from their designated fleet, Speed Gulf General Transportation makes sure that a replacement is provided within three hours. According to Speed Gulf General Transportation’s commercial director Ishan
Aggarwal, the company’s goal for 2018 is to become one of the prominent transporters in the market: “As manufacturers we understand the value of a transparent and effective transporter. There are many transporters in the market aiming at high profit margins with no value to commitment. As a new company we have much to learn. At the same time, we strive to become a reliable transporter and have the will to reach our goals.” To continue its rapid growth, Ishan says Speed Gulf General Transportation will need to continue to serve its major fields while entering other sectors of transportation or industry where its current units and services can be used. “Our goal is to further focus on the food and waste management industries in the coming year,” he adds. “The target is simple – double the fleet size to double our reach in the market. We will expand only when we have strong contracts backing our fleets as we do not want to expand at an abnormal pace. Taking on more than they can handle has been a major downfall of many large companies in the transportation business. We’re focussed on not being one of them.”

SUppORTiNg CUSTOMERS AND bUSiNESSES UD’s customers are increasingly aware of TCO and want their business to be more efficient and profitable. In 2018, it is aiming to give its customers all the tools to succeed, not only when it comes to products but also its services.
UD TRUCKS U D Trucks has been present in the Middle East for more than 60 years. Initially managed directly from Japan, UD Trucks opened its Middle East regional office in Jebel Ali, Dubai, UAE in 2006. Since then, UD Trucks has cemented itself as a leader in the market. UD is a well-established Japanese brand with a century of heritage. Owned by the Volvo Group, the second largest truck manufacturer in the world, it also benefits from Volvo Group’s proven technologies and processes. Both its heavy-duty range, Quester and its medium duty truck range, Croner have proven their worth in meeting the key needs of the typical truck user in Middle East following their resepective launches in 2016 and 2017. Because it was specifically built with Middle East customers in mind, the all-new Quester range has proven a particularly strong seller. With the Quester, UD Trucks wanted to develop a multi-purpose truck that met the wide variety of needs specific to the region, including off and on-road use, construction, distribution and long-
haul transportation. The Quester range was a major step forward for the company and combines the best of European touch and Japanese quality. The Quester model focuses on features that make businesses grow. These include fuel economy, payload, robustness and a wide range of applications and variants with high maintainability to extend the uptime of the truck and provide a higher ROI for customers. Fuel economy is delivered by leveraging high technology in core components like modern high torque engines and complete driveline, aerodynamic design and the UD fuel coaching system all serve fuel efficiency. Robustness is delivered through a very robust chassis that offers many variants for different applications including hub reduction axles, 8x4 variants. UD Trucks recently introduced its new HD 6X4 40 T and 8X4 rigid which will enable the company to compete fully in the heavyduty construction segment and it has great ambitions with this product in the region. UD Trucks is also expecting high demand for the medium-duty Croner which, like the Quester, was designed
with Middle East customer demands and business needs in mind. The Croner is a reliable and versatile truck range built with robust and quality components to deliver extra productivity and superior uptime. In terms of aftersales, a number of servicing packages are available to customers. Through its training programmes it provides service technicians that ensure customers can receive the correct level of preventive maintenance and the latest technical specifications. Authorised UD workshops and mobile workshops also have access to the most upto-date UD tools, diagnostic equipment and UD Genuine Parts. These elements reduce un-planned stops, increase vehicle uptime and protect our customers’ investment. UD Truck sales saw improvement in all the major GCC markets last year and in 2018 it is focussing on a newly introduced Quester 40T model for the construction sector in the region. It is also enhancing the service side of its operation and will focus on competence development by delivering tailor made training programmes for customer drivers.

olvo Trucks arrived in the Middle East in the 1960s and the Volvo Group Middle East regional offices were opened on the 20 March, 2006 in Jebel Ali, Dubai, UAE. The offices include a regional parts distribution centre and a regional competence development centre to train dealers in optimal machine usage and productivity through the use of Volvo’s Dynafleet system, site simulations and Volvo simulators and other tools. Volvo Trucks has cemented its position in the Middle East’s construction and long haulage industry through consistently and continuously driving progress and developing enhanced solutions that cater to both industry professionals and drivers. It currently employs 60 members of staff across the region. The transport solutions offered by Volvo Trucks Middle East include a mix of pioneering the latest product technology whilst enhancing customer’s productivity, allowing them to increase uptime and optimise service and maintenance for the duty cycle. It has become a pioneer
within the trucking industry by producing enhanced solutions which benefit both drivers and fleet managers. Firstly, its range of Volvo Trucks - the FMX, FH and FM – is highly advanced, offering a whole raft of innovative features to its clients. These include the ground-breaking Volvo dynamic steering, which delivers exceptional handling in all operating conditions. Secondly, its I-Shift’s intelligent electronics constantly monitor factors like road grade, speed, weight, and engine load to help keep the truck in the most fuel-efficient gear possible. This technology allows drivers the safest, most efficient, informed and comfortable driving experience possible. Finally, its Dynafleet system can reduce wear and tear whilst increasing safety, and maintaining profitability and fuel efficiency which is essential for a successful business. Volvo Trucks provides customers with a number of service contracts (blue, silver and gold); the benefits vary from scheduled maintenance by certified Volvo technicians to 100% uptime guaranteed.
The Volvo service contracts enable customers to keep on the road, reduce downtime and thus total cost of ownership, while improving operational control and boosting customers bottom line. In 2015, it also launched its comprehensive driver development programme to further educate professional truck drivers in the Middle East. The programme, which complies with EU directive results in safer drivers, lower fuel costs and a reduction in environmental impact for businesses. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman and Iran are amongst key countries for Volvo Trucks in the Middle East. These countries are projected to be the strong construction markets in the Middle East in 2018 and beyond. With major construction projects such as Dubai EXPO 2020 taking place in the region, there will be a huge demand for its construction and long-haul vehicles moving forward. Both its Long-Haul range (Volvo FH) and Construction range (Volvo FMX) are the most lucrative segments in the region. It is considered leaders in the heavy haulage segment
where the Volvo FH accounts for approximately 70% of its sales. Having made an important contribution to development in the region, Volvo Trucks key benchmarks to date include the opening of a new CKD plant (AVI Arabian Vehicles & Trucks Industry Co. Ltd) in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia in 2015. The plant is a joint venture between Zahid Tractor and Volvo Group with an assembling capacity of 4,000 Trucks in one shift and 7,000 trucks in two shifts. Secondly, its new I-Shift gearbox with crawler gears launched in 2016 and the updated automatic transmission makes it possible to add up to two new crawler gears. This means, among other things, that the truck can move off from standstill and transport a gross combination weight (GVW) of up to 325t. Offering an entirely new scope for trucks with automated transmission, I-Shift with crawler gears makes it possible to start from a standstill in extreme situations, meaning the driver can haul a heavy load without worrying about getting into situations that may lead to costly standstills. gears with a suitable rear axle ratio that optimises engine revs at high speeds, results in lower fuel consumption on the highway. This is a significant benefit to haulage firms doing this kind of work. Overall, 2017 was yet another good year for Volvo Trucks in the Middle East, mirroring the company’s impressive global performance. During the year, the company experience good sales of its construction range and also saw good results in its service and parts
sales as well. It is expecting even stronger growth in the upcoming year. In a rapidly changing and maturing Middle East market, its customers are increasingly aware of the total cost of ownership rather than the price of the truck alone and they want their business to be more efficient and profitable. Looking ahead, Volvo Trucks will continue to ensure that it provides its customers with all the tools to succeed, not only when it comes to the products,

but also the services. One key target is to have I-shift gearboxes in 100% of trucks sold in 2018. Safety is also paramount to Volvo Trucks which is a key concern within the region with rising incidents in the construction and long-haul industry. With road safety also a key focus of the UAE’s Vision 2021 and the National Transformation program in Saudi Arabia, the company will be looking to introduce more safety features as it continues to focus on the UAE’s Vision 2021 programme.
