FACES OF KIRBY-SMITH MACHINERY

Preventative Maintenance Coordinator Jennifer Smith celebrates a decade at KSM

This year marks Jennifer Smith’s 10th anniversary with Kirby-Smith Machinery Inc. (KSM). She distinctly remembers her interview with the company before being hired as a service clerk for KSM’s Texas branches.

“I said I was looking for a career — not a job — and here I am 10 years later, having held several positions,” said Smith, who is currently the preventative maintenance coordinator for KSM and based out of the Oklahoma City branch. “Each role prepared me for where I am now, which is a new position that was created last year. When I saw it pop up on our careers site, I thought it was perfect for me.”

Smith knew KSM was going to be a great fit for her because everyone is invested in each other’s success and well-being.

“It’s a true family atmosphere,” she stated. “A good example was a couple of years ago when my daughter was born. They threw me a baby shower in the shop as part of an appreciation event for the technicians. It’s a really great company to work for, and I just love Kirby-Smith.”

In addition to her coworkers, Smith has built strong relationships with customers, and some were even a little concerned when she moved to a different position.

“I had weekly contact with many of them, and that was no longer the case,” she explained. “They reached out because they were worried that I was no longer with Kirby-Smith, which I think says a lot about our relationship.”

Setting up service

Much of Smith’s time is spent setting up scheduled services under the Komatsu Care program that provides complimentary service for the first 2,000 hours or three years on most new machine purchases. She gets notifications by email of machines that are close to a service interval, noting that there can be as many as 160 to 260 a day that have to be scheduled.

“Whether a machine is under Komatsu Care or has passed its complimentary period, preventative maintenance is essential to its performance and longevity,” said Smith. “That goes for all makes and types of equipment. If you don’t take care of your machine, you could have serious issues down the road.”

Jennifer and her husband, Chris, stay busy looking after their daughter, Josie, and enjoy going fishing every chance they get. ■
