A Salute to a

Morrone Excavation Inc. offers site work solutions for new homes along the Connecticut and Rhode Island coastline

W Mike Morrone, President

When Mike Morrone was a teenager, he dove headfirst into the construction industry. In 1991, after spending a decade learning the trade, he founded his own company: Morrone Excavation Inc. Over the last 30 years, the firm has established a specialized operation in the Westerly, R.I., region.

“When I was 16, I started out working for my uncle and grandfather in the sand and gravel excavation business,” recalled Morrone. “I also spent time working for my father as a mechanic at his service stations and repair facilities. Eventually, I realized I preferred the site work and the excavation business to mechanic work and started my own excavation company.” Morrone’s staff consists of two full-time employees and one part-time employee. The firm services a territory from Old Saybrook, Conn., to the Newport-Warwick, R.I., area. It focuses on residential work and smaller commercial projects.

“Primarily, we complete high-end homes along the Rhode Island and Connecticut coastline,” explained Morrone. “We basically complete the site work from the excavation to the foundation for our projects. In some cases, we’ll demo an existing home and remove the septic system; then we will excavate and install a new foundation, install the utilities and a new septic system, backfill it with material, subgrade the site, create the driveway, and get the property ready for finish grade. We will also grade private roads for property access or smaller developments as well. It’s a lot of long hours because we travel wherever the business takes us. My wife’s support has played a big role in the company’s success.”

Running a smaller operation means that Morrone has a real sense of pride about his work. “We’ve established a niche business where I enjoy going to the job site every day,” stated Morrone. “We stand behind our work and do

The excavator was also a good value.”

Operators backfill a new home near Westerly, R.I., using a Volvo ECR58 excavator, a Volvo L35 wheel loader and a Volvo EC160 excavator. “I’ve owned a wide range of competitive machines over the years but prefer the Volvo equipment,” said President Mike Morrone. “They’re good on fuel, smooth and quiet to operate, and hold their resale value.”

everything the right way the first time. That mentality has helped us establish relationships with several builders in the area that we work with to complete our residential projects.”

Consistent demand

Throughout the course of a year, Morrone and his team will work on 12 separate residential projects of various sizes. Demand for Morrone Excavation’s services has been consistent due to the company’s proximity to New York City. “This area is a popular location for people to build summer homes where they can get away from New York City for a while,” noted Morrone. “We’re very busy during the winter because people prefer to have their work completed while they’re not using the property. During the summer, we’ll do a lot of demolition work for people buying real estate that want to build larger homes.”

At a job site near Westerly, Morrone and his crew are completing work on an approximately 200-acre lot.

President Mike Morrone backfills the foundation before installing exterior drainage at a property near Westerly, R.I.

“Currently, we’re working with a builder to complete a main house, cottage and barn,” said Morrone. “We demoed an existing home and are doing the site work for all three of the new structures. We’re also going to dig several ponds, install some roads and add a bridge. Once it’s complete, the property will be a functioning farm. “At the location where we demoed the existing house, we dug a new foundation and are backfilling it before installing the exterior

drainage,” continued Morrone. “We’ve also added interior drainage to the property. Once the drainage is installed, we’ll finish backfilling the structure, subgrade it, and get the site ready for builders to put up a house.”

Equipment as good as dealer support

To complete projects on schedule, Morrone Excavation relies on its fleet of Volvo equipment. “Currently, we use the EC160 excavator, EC140 excavator, ECR58 excavator and an L35 wheel loader to complete our jobs,” said Morrone. “I’ve owned a wide range of competitive machines over the years but prefer the Volvo equipment. They’re good on fuel, smooth and quiet to operate, and hold their resale value.

“Equally important is the support that we get from the dealership after purchasing the equipment,” added Morrone. “Without that, we’re dead in the water. Woodco does a good job taking care of us to make sure we’re running and maximizing our uptime.” When looking for new equipment or making a call about a machine, Morrone works closely

with Jim Capobianco, a Woodco Machinery sales representative.

“Jim is accessible whenever I have a question, whether that’s Tuesday afternoon or Sunday evening,” stated Morrone. “The parts and service department also do an excellent job servicing our machines. We haven’t had any major issues with our machines, but when something does come up, they’re quick to resolve the problem.”

More challenging job sites

Looking forward, Morrone is optimistic about his business success. The demand for new homes in the area continues to grow annually. “The future looks bright because we’ve got a lot of work lined up through 2022,” noted Morrone. “We’re looking at adding larger equipment to take on some of the projects ahead of us. The sites are increasingly becoming more challenging because most of the preferred lots have already been sold and developed. We’re encountering more ledges, boulders and other challenging materials. It’s heavier work that requires a bigger machine, but we can handle it.” ■

Callahan & Montalto Site Construction LLC focuses on building partnerships and offering turnkey solutions for its customers

T Timothy Montalto, Owner

Timothy Montalto’s family has been in the construction business since the 1940s. He grew up working for his family’s company and learned a variety of trades in the construction industry. “As a kid, I spent more time on job sites than I did playing kickball or riding a bike,” Montalto recalled. “It was work, but I enjoyed it.” In 1998, Montalto used his passion and skill set to found Callahan & Montalto Site Construction LLC, which is named after his grandparents. “I was always very close to them,” he explained. “Callahan is my grandmother’s maiden name, and Montalto is my grandfather’s. They were hard workers and inspired me to pursue this career. I dedicated the company name to them so that I can see their name every day when I come to work. My grandfather always put my grandmother first, so that’s why it starts with Callahan. “When I went out on my own, it was only me, a backhoe and one employee,” Montalto added. “We started out taking on whatever projects came our way. Steadily, we built a strong customer base that allowed us to grow and take on larger projects.” Today, the company has 27 employees. It works with a wide range of residential and

commercial partners throughout Central Massachusetts and is based in Holden.

“We’ve taken on just about anything that has to do with construction,” stated Montalto. “Our customers turn to us for projects because we’re focused on doing the best job possible without cutting corners. Our employees are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Project capacity

Currently, the firm has eight active projects. It typically completes $4 million to $5 million of work annually. The types of projects depend on the season and the firm’s workload.

“We’re able to take on every aspect of a project but have also built relationships with other contractors to complete work more efficiently,” said Montalto. “In the past, we’ve completed projects as the general contractor where we do the foundation, building, everything. On other projects, we might only install the utilities. We’re very flexible about the jobs we take on and who we will partner with based on our workload.”

Recently, the firm began working on a commercial project for a pharmaceutical company. “We’re providing a turnkey job site solution that will support a new $90 million lab for a subcontractor of Pfizer,” revealed Montalto. “The total site is roughly 6 acres, and we’re completing all of the site work and site finishes for the job. That consists of blasting and hammering over 10,000 yards of ledge, digging and prepping for foundation footings, installing the utilities, building two retaining walls, then paving and adding the site finishes. “The rock was a big challenge on this job site,” continued Montalto. “As we’re digging for utilities, it’s hard to guess where the rocks are located. We’ve pre-blasted a lot of stuff, but you really don’t know where the rock is until you dig it up. We have experience taking on this type of work and haven’t let it slow us down.”

Long partnership with Woodco Machinery

To stay on schedule, Callahan & Montalto Site Construction relies on its fleet of Volvo equipment. That includes EC300E, ECR305C, EC140E, ECR58 and ECR40D excavators; as well as L110H and L90H wheel loaders.

“The versatility of the Volvo equipment helps us stay on schedule,” noted Montalto. “It’s been very reliable for us. The machines are user-friendly and comfortable for operators. Really what makes a difference is Woodco Machinery. Over the last 20 years, we’ve established a strong relationship with Woodco. They do a great job of servicing our equipment and limiting any downtime. If we need to swap out a piece of equipment, which doesn’t happen very often, they loan us a replacement machine to keep us on schedule.” Montalto established a relationship with Woodco Machinery General Manager Dan Rott early in his career. Today, Montalto works closely with sales representative Matt Rainha. “Matt is great about answering his phone whenever I call,” stated Montalto. “The support we receive from Woodco makes me feel comfortable purchasing new equipment. In construction, something is always bound to come up. Woodco provides us the support to know that when something does go wrong, they will be there to take care of it and keep us going.”

Like father, like daughter

Montalto’s passion for the construction industry was passed down to his daughter, Abby, who runs her own company called Buy The Yard. The business sells sand, gravel, mulch, decorative stones and other construction products.

Owner Timothy Montalto (left) works closely with Woodco Machinery sales representative Matt Rainha to service his company’s Volvo equipment. “Matt is great about answering his phone whenever I call,” stated Montalto. “The support we receive from Woodco makes me feel comfortable purchasing new equipment.”

“Abby grew up going to job sites with me and always wanted to run the equipment,” recalled Montalto. “Like me, she’s always had her hand in some part of the business. Although she’s running her own company, we still work closely together. Once I’m ready to retire, she will take over and continue to grow the business.” ■

Texting program simplifies customer communication with Woodco Machinery’s parts and service departments

R

Recently, Woodco Machinery rolled out its texting program, which allows customers to directly text Woodco’s parts department (888-345-1375) and service department (888-345-1380). The program is an alternative to emailing or calling the local branch.

“We felt the need to add a texting service for our customers because we’re always looking for ways to improve communication between the dealership and the customer,” stated Parts Manager Steven Bodtmann. “It allows our customers to text directly into us as if they were making a general phone call. It also gives our customers the ability to share pictures and documents with us.”

“Most people glance at their phone for text messages more often than they check their emails or voicemails,” added Service Admin Sarah Yergeau. “Texting can be a faster and easier way for customers to communicate with us. We’re able to streamline service without interrupting their day.” When customers text with Woodco, the messages are kept in the database

for future communication. This can be helpful if someone at Woodco is out of the office; the previous messages will be there, so employees do not need to repeat communications with the customer.

“Everybody in the department has access to the conversation thread with a customer,” noted Bodtmann. “That allows anybody working with our customers to more efficiently service them and keep everybody on the same page.”

Steven Bodtmann, Parts Manager

The program is intended to supplement other forms of communication, such as emails and phone calls.

“Having multiple routes of communication is always a benefit,” stated Yergeau. “Instead of calling a customer and explaining something over the phone, we can more clearly break the information down through a text, include any relevant images and documentation, and do so without interrupting the customer. Overall, texting is an easy, fast and efficient way for Woodco and our customers to communicate, and we look forward to continuing to find new ways to improve our service.” ■

New partnership with Yanmar Compact Equipment North America offers diverse lineup of compact equipment

F

Finding the right compact machine for a project can be challenging. In 2019, Yanmar Holdings Co. Ltd. acquired ASV Holdings Inc. and in 2020 created Yanmar Compact Equipment North America (YCENA) to simplify that decision for customers. In 2021, YCENA joined the Woodco Machinery dealership network to increase serviceability throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

“Independently, ASV and Yanmar are strong products born from innovation,” remarked Tate Johnson, YCENA president. “Yanmar produced the first commercially viable compact

diesel engine and mini excavator. ASV is America’s original track loader. Bringing the two product lines together establishes YCENA as a major player in North America’s compact equipment space.”

“Partnering with a company like Woodco brings many positives to the relationships with our customers,” added Bill Stewart, YCENA business development manager for the Northeast. “Woodco’s dealership network provides excellent parts and service capabilities for our customers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The relationship with Woodco further emphasizes our commitment to providing high-quality service to our customers.”

Continued innovation

Woodco’s complete lineup of YCENA equipment includes compact track loaders, skid steer loaders, excavators, tracked carriers and wheel loaders.

Recently, YCENA launched the MAX-Series cab for its skid steer loaders and compact track loaders. The MAX-Series cab provides 360-degree visibility and an ergonomic design intended to reduce operator fatigue with additional legroom, shoulder room and foot room, compared to previous models. The display panel features a 7-inch, full-color touchscreen for visibility to vital monitoring specs and a backup camera — and can be customized by the operator. The MAX-Series machines are built to lead the industry in hydraulic performance, tractive effort, undercarriage technology, reliability and serviceability. “The MAX-Series cab brings premium in-cab comfort to our skid steers and track loaders,” said Johnson. “We took a step back to reimagine what an operator would need to be comfortable. What we ended up with is a world-class experience.”

In 2020, YCENA launched the Yanmar SV40 compact excavator, specifically designed for the North American market. The 9,515-pound machine offers best-in-class power, digging force and lifting capacity that makes it effective in tight spaces. Available in cab and canopy mode, options for the SV40 include a second PTO function, a 4or 6-way blade, and an additional counterweight. YCENA’s commitment to innovation and the introduction of new products makes it a leader in the compact equipment world. ■

GREATER IMPULSE ENERGY FOR MORE COMPACTOR/ DRIVER PRODUCTIVITY!

The leader in trench compaction technology, NPK delivers the industry’s greatest impulse forces with overall superior performance through hydraulically operated rotating eccentric action. Greater vibration forces generate stress waves in granular or loose soil material, bringing the soil’s air to the surface and packing the particles closer together. Greater impulse action works together with the carrier’s downward forces to compact cohesive clay-type soils.
