Hamad HamadPort Port allallset settototransform transformQatar Qatar into intoregional regionaltrading tradingcenter center
C
iting Hamad Port’s “great capabilities”, modern facilities and advanced systems, an official of Qatar Chamber has expressed his confidence that the mega project will increase trade volume between Qatar and the rest of the world. With rapid growth expected “in the coming years”, Qatar Chamber Director General Saleh Hamad Al Sharqi said Hamad Port would transform Doha into a regional trade center, promoting inter-trade in the Middle East and enhancing the region’s trade with the world. In a press statement, Al Shari said Hamad Port provided “a golden opportunity” for the private sector and Qatari businessmen to activate their business and promote the import and export of various commodities. “The port provides great capabilities for receiving all types and sizes of ships, allowing Qatari traders to import and export all goods,” he pointed out. Al Sharqi praised the achievements of Hamad Port during its partial operation, which lasted for less than a year. During this period, it was able to acquire 27% of the regional trade in the
Middle East. This is expected to increase further now. He underlined the important role played by Hamad Port “under the current circumstances” by the opening of direct shipping lines with a number of ports in Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, India and Pakistan. “This has contributed to the continuous flow of supplies and goods needed by the domestic market,” he said. Al Sharqi stressed that Qatar Chamber was continuously co-ordinating with the Qatar Ports Management Company (Mwani Qatar) “to provide all facilities” to national companies that are importing and exporting various goods in order to ease trade movement. Qatar Chamber will organize seminars and open meetings with Qatari businessmen and traders, as well as commercial companies operating in the country, to showcase the capabilities of Hamad Port. “They can benefit from these capabilities in terms of enhancing their business dealings and linking them with different import and export channels of different countries to enhance Qatar’s foreign trade,” Al Sharqi said.

pressed pleasure with the new agreement. “We are very pleased to announce this new agreement with BOTAŞ which will further strengthen our relationship with our friends in Turkey,” Al Kaabi said. “As the LNG market continues to evolve, Qatar’s ability to capture new opportunities is once again evident in this latest deal,” he stressed. “This deal reflects the deep confidence of our
customers around the world in our capabilities as a reliable supplier of LNG to satisfy their requirements,” Al Kaabi added. Commenting on the new agreement, Qatargas Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Al Thani described BOTAŞ as “a valued customer with deep expertise in the LNG industry”. He said: “Our relationship with BOTAŞ has evolved from supplying spot cargoes to the current medium term deal, and we look forward to providing BOTAŞ with reliable, clean energy for
many years to come.” Commencing on October 1 this year, the agreement provides for the supply of LNG from Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Limited (2) (Qatargas2), the world’s first fully integrated value chain LNG venture. The LNG will be delivered onboard Q-Flex vessels to either the Egegaz LNG Terminal, the Marmara LNG Terminal, or to the Etki LNG terminal in the Republic of Turkey.

INTERIOR DESIGN
Wealth Wealthand anddevelopment development frame frameQatar Qatarasasmarket marketofof “great “greatpotential” potential”for forglobal global designers designers Qatar’s building surge ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup has sparked a boom in interior design spend across the Gulf. In the last year alone, the GCC’s fit-out market has grown by more than $2.2 billion, and is now estimated at being worth $17.7 billion per annum. Qatar’s own interior design and fit-out industry is already valued at almost $3 billion a year and growing.

nternational design firms specializing in the manufacture and export of interior products have reasserted their belief that Qatar is on the verge of becoming one of the world’s most affluent hubs for furniture and decor, ahead of gathering in Doha this November for a major exhibition. The inaugural INDEX Qatar interiors exhibition will unite thousands of local, Middle Eastern and global design minds for three days of showcasing and networking, including some of the most influential manufacturers and suppliers of bespoke furnishings. INDEX, Qatar’s biggest-ever event of its kind, comes at a time of major growth for the interiors
industry. Forecasters predict Qatar’s interior and fit-out contracting spend will have registered 15 to 20% growth by the turn of the year, with mass regeneration meaning more is being spent per head of population across the combined commercial, hospitality, residential, retail, medical and education interiors markets in Qatar than anywhere else in the GCC. To international designers, that growing interiors spend positions Qatar as a prime market. Renowned global firms such as Jotun, Mezzaluna, Seasons Accessories Inc, Cristal de Paris and Stil Décor will be taking part in INDEX Qatar. Among those attending the event will be Ujjwal Goel, director at luxury Indian furniture brand La Sorogeeka. He sees great potential in Qatar market. “Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world,” he notes. “There is a lot of development happening at this point in time. Compared to the rest of the GCC, I believe there is a scarcity of good quality designers and contractors. That is an opportunity that La Sorogeeka sees, hence we’re looking to extend our reach into that market.” He is confident that with the FIFA World Cup coming up in Qatar in 2022, there is a lot of development which is there for tapping from all vendors from all over the world. “INDEX gives us that opportunity to put our foot in the door,” Goel points out. “Qatar has a great potential for quality contractors. We’ve been

working in Qatar for over the last decade and since we want to expand operations we feel that INDEX is the perfect place to help with that. “We want to meet a lot of new clients and get a foot in the door. We are confident the show will attract the talent from the market – the designers, architects and other industry professionals – to come and see the works of vendors from across the globe.” Qatar’s building surge ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup has sparked a boom in interior design spend across the Gulf. In the last year alone, the GCC’s fit-out market has grown by more than $2.2 billion, and is now estimated at being worth $17.7 billion per annum. Qatar’s own interior design and fit-out industry is already valued at almost $3 billion a year and growing. In terms of spend-per-head of population, the state is currently seeing an annual sum of $78 being spent for every resident on commercial interiors and their fit-out – almost double that of nearest rival Kuwait ($46). Across 2016/17, Qatar will have invested $488-per-person on retail projects, more than double that of the UAE ($227), with a further $909-per-head being put into the development of hospitals. In terms of contrast, Saudi Arabia – the second biggest investor in the region – is spending just $95. Qatar again leads the way in regards to money being invested in educational facilities and their

interior fit-out, with a $280-per-head-spend. INDEX Qatar will gather hundreds of international product manufacturers and interior design firms at the Doha Exhibition & Conference Centre from November 13 to 15. The overriding aim of the three-day event is to bring together those responsible for fitting out the vast portfolio of ongoing new-builds and renovations with international manufacturers and furniture, furnishing and décor suppliers. Jaafar Shubber, INDEX Qatar event director, says: “We are thrilled to be bringing the renowned INDEX brand to Qatar at a time when the opportunities could not be greater for quality design and architecture. “The growth Qatar is currently experiencing is only the beginning of what will be a huge window of opportunity for the entire design community, both on a local and international scale,” Shubber points out. “It comes as no surprise to us that our exhibitors are as enthused as they are about taking part in November’s show and reaping the rewards of Qatar’s widespread development and regeneration.” INDEX Qatar is expected to attract thousands of interior designers, architects, project managers, importers and distributers from the full spectrum of retail, hospitality, residential and commercial design.

LEGAL
Unforeseen Unforeseen ground conditions ground conditions By Laura Warren
P
arties commonly agree in their contract that the risk of unforeseen ground conditions is to rest solely with the contractor on the basis that: (1) the contractor has had the opportunity to inspect the physical condition of the site, including subsurface conditions, and to check the presence and extent of any conduits, pipes, cables, services or contamination, together with any other conditions that might affect the works; (2) a failure on the part of the contractor to discover or foresee the site condition or risk does not entitle it to additional money or time; and/ or (3) the contractor is deemed to have obtained all necessary information as to the risks and all circumstances related to the site which might affect execution of the works. The effect of such a clause is that the contractor takes the risk of both reasonably discoverable and unforeseen ground conditions. The contractor must establish for itself that the works are in fact possible, that its tendered price and contract period are adequate for the purpose of executing those works and that its working methods are sufficient to ensure completion of the works. Arguably, this is not an ideal position for either party. A contractor is unlikely to be able to price for the risk with any certainty, resulting in a higher project price for the employer. Within the context of some projects in Qatar, the risks of including such a clause in construction are potentially open ended for a contractor in terms of cost and time. Pricing is made near impossible; the contractor is left faced with trying to manage the risk of, and price for, the unknown. It is also frequently the source of disputes; in the event of late completion due to an unforeseen ground condition such that performance of the contract is no longer profitable for a contractor, the contractor’s concern will be to cut costs, potentially at the expense of delivering the requisite degree of quality. The circumstances in which such clauses may be appropriate are essentially those where extensive, good quality geotechnical information is available for a contractor who has the experience, skill and resources to deal with any unexpected conditions. An employer may (and should) be keen to ensure that its contractor is in receipt of, or obtains, adequate information in order to reduce the costs of contingencies included in bids and secure a reliable design. Accordingly, it is not uncommon for an employer to engage environmental/ site investigation consultants to carry out investigative surveys and reports for inclusion in tender documentation.
In such circumstances, in order for an employer to retain protection against unexpected site conditions, it may include a provision which disclaims liability for the accuracy or completeness of any survey, report or document it has provided such that its contractor is not entitled to rely on such data and is left without contractual recourse against the employer in the event that the actual conditions vary from the site reports. The intention behind the disclaimer is twofold: (1) avoidance of arguments from the contractor that there was a representation or warranty by the employer as to the accuracy and/ or completeness of the information provided; and (2) the removal of any possibility that, if the employer has prepared and/ or provided a survey or ground condition report, the contractor may advance an argument for misrepresentation/ negligent misrepresentation arising from its reliance on the survey/ report. Alternatively, parties may agree that, whilst the contractor is generally responsible for ground condition risk, it will be entitled to an increase in the contract price and/ or an extension of time in respect of “unforeseen” physical conditions which cause cost or delay. This is the position adopted by the 1987 and 1999 editions of the FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Construction of Building and Engineering Works Designed by the Employer or “Red Book”, and the Conditions of Contract for Plant and Design-Build for Electrical and Mechanical Plant for Building and Engineering Works Designed by the Contractor or “Yellow Book”. In these books as unamended, recovery for cost incurred as a result of the risk can be reduced if more favourable conditions, than could have been expected, are encountered elsewhere in the slightly ambiguously worded, “similar parts of the works” (sub-clause 14.2 refers). On this basis, parties are left with making a judgement call as to what the contractor may have assessed as being significant and hence whether or not a matter should have been foreseen, and whether or not the risk is likely to eventuate. In this respect, there should be no distinction between the terms “unforeseeable” and “unforeseen”; despite the fact that this issue is for the most part considered after the event, the test is not whether or not the contractor actually foresaw the risk, or could have foreseen it, but whether or not it was reasonable to foresee the risk as a likely event. The FIDIC contracts referred to above attempt to provide us with some certainty by including a definition: “not reasonably foreseeable by an experienced contractor by the date for submission in the Tender”. This is still a difficult issue
to determine and, in practice, parties will give consideration to factors including information provided by the employer and/ or interpretations of the same, the contractor’s own pre-bid site investigations and information in the public domain at the time of tender. This option is aimed at achieving a compromise position whereby the contractor is able to price for site condition risk save for that which is genuinely unexpected – a form of mutual “risk sharing” if you like. Nonetheless, the element of uncertainty entailed in the “unforeseeability” test may still by a breeding ground for costly disputes. Legal Position Qatari law does not contain specific provisions which explicitly govern the allocation of the risk of discovering and dealing with adverse site conditions. This differs from the position in many common law jurisdictions that, without an express provision to the contrary, ground condition risk lies with the contractor like any other physical condition or buildability issue. In the absence of contractual risk allocation for site condition and in the absence of specific statutory provisions, parties to a construction contract may, in some circumstances, refer to various wider provisions of Law No. (22) of 2004 (the Civil Code) which deal with, amongst others, concepts of impossibility and force majeure. With respect to the concept of impossibility, Article 148 of the Civil Code states: “If the object of the obligation is impossible in itself, the contract is null and void.” Similarly, Article 188 of the Civil Code reads: “In contracts that are binding on both sides, if the execution of the obligation of one of the parties to the contract becomes impossible for some external reason in which he played no part, this obligation terminates, and the obligations that correspond to it terminate with it, and the contract is annulled automatically.” The law of force majeure may equally assist. Parties may refer to Article 402 of the Civil Code which states: “The obligation terminates if the debtor proved that performance of it has become impossible for him for an external cause in which he has played no part.” Additionally, Article 256 may be useful: “If the debtor does not execute the obligation in kind, or delays in executing it, he is obliged to pay compensation for the detriment sustained by the creditor, unless he proves that failure to execute, or delay in execution, was for an external cause in which he played no part.” Equally, Article 204 reads: “If a person proves that the detriment has arisen from an external

cause in which he played no part, such as force majeure, or unexpected event, or fault on the part of the person harmed, or fault of a third party, he is not bound to pay compensation, unless there is a provision that rules otherwise.” Interestingly, Article 258 of the Civil Code states that “An agreement may be made that the debtor will bear the consequences of force majeure or unexpected event” and thus parties may pre-empt the risk in their contractual terms. The law of impossibility, therefore, relies on proof that the particular unexpected or unforeseen ground condition renders the performance of the contract impossible, the consequence of which is termination. The law of force majeure may relieve a party from having to pay compensation (additional monies or liquidated damages depending on the claimant) in circumstances where the site condition was unexpected and in which “he played no part”. The question is then: would the concepts of impossibility or force majeure include unforeseeable ground conditions? This is essentially a question for determination by the courts (or arbitral tribunal) in the context of all the circumstances of the case. * Should you have any questions in connection with this article or the legal issues it covers, please contact Laura Warren of Clyde & Co LLP at laura.warren@clydeco. com

How to to meet How meet cyber-security cyber-security challenges challenges As cyber-crimes have become frequent, businesses are adopting innovative security strategies to prevent their sensitive and valuable data from being leaked to unauthorized users
T
he world in which we live is connected through networks, ranging from Internet banking to information sharing through e-mails. This extensive sharing of information comes with certain security issues. Cyber security has become an international concern as high-profile and large-scale breaches are posing a major threat amid fears that hacking and data breaches could adversely affect the global economy even. Cyber-attacks are responsible for many negative impacts on businesses, resulting in financial losses, disruption of services, loss of trust from customers, etc. As cyber-crimes have become frequent, businesses are adopting innovative security strategies to prevent their sensitive and valuable data from being leaked to unauthorized users. Let us discuss various challenges being faced by businesses, ways to tackle them and solutions to prevent them. Cyber-security challenges The list below highlights some of the cybersecurity challenges encountered by both large and small businesses.
Mobile devices: Mobile devices, especially smartphones, have become part and parcel of our lives, including our workplace. Most companies do utilize some security measures for their devices, but many employees use their smartphones for accessing and downloading corporate data, thus providing IT administrators no scope to ensure data security. Social networks: Popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, mainly used for socializing and posting multimedia files, are also responsible for providing a medium to leak company data. People often tend to post private information related to their workplaces and this makes the company they work with vulnerable to data leaks. Also, employees have access to many thirdparty applications through Facebook that may pose some unknown security threats to the business. Cloud computing: Cloud computing refers to a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet, instead of hosting on a local server or a personal computer, for the purpose of storing, managing and processing of data. As this technology involves a third-party to provide data security, there is a threat to business if the server of the third-party is compromised.
Even if cloud computing providers are taking many measures to ensure data safety, their different approach in terms of storage from the company could lead to security concerns. Ransomware: The threats of ransomware are are recognized widely, especially after the outage caused by the recent ransomware “WannaCry” in many parts of the world. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that blocks users from accessing their data on their computer systems until a payment is made to the hacker(s). However, it can’t be guaranteed that the cyber criminals will allow you access your data after the ransom is paid. This is a dirty practice to extort money, mostly in the form of bitcoins, from victims. Tips to keep hackers away Here are some of the cyber-security tips for businesses to prevent them from attacks from hackers and to minimize security risks. Set strong passwords: Simple passwords like your name, e-mail id or mobile number are very much predictable and are therefore easy to crack. So it is highly recommended for employees and customers to create passwords consisting of numerals, upper and lower case letters and special characters. The combination of these characters in a password makes it difficult for someone to crack it. Limit the number of attempts during authentication: If your account does not have a limit on the number of password attempts, then, hackers can use this opportunity to input random passwords till they are successful in accessing your account. Moreover, with the help of password cracker software, hackers can access your password within minutes. Thus, it is advisable to limit the number of attempts during every stage of authentication. Think twice before using password managers: Password manager software is a category of software which can assist you to create strong passwords and also store them in its database for future logging purposes. Though it has been adopted by many businesses, it has a loophole. As all the password related information is stored in a single database, if the hacker gets access to that database, he/ she can access every information and misuse them. Hence, it is wise to consider the pros and cons of such software before authorizing them to store sensitive information.
Glulam

Prefer virtual keyboards for confidential data: With time, the hackers have become more sophisticated as they can access your system by recording your keystrokes with the help of keylogging software. You are more vulnerable to such attacks if you are using shared computers. So, it is better to use virtual or onscreen keyboards for inputting sensitive information as it cannot be traced by keylogging software. Refrain from storing the customer’s CVV number: Saving the credit/debit card details of a customer, the card number, validity, etc., with the permission of the customer, is beneficial as it allows quicker checkouts if needed. However, it increases security concerns such as the hackers manipulating the customer details, or making unauthorized payments through the cards.

The alternative solution will be to store all the card information except the CVV number. This will provide more security to the customers’ in-
formation. Also, the customers would not mind inputting the three-digit CVV number every time during checkouts. Security solutions To protect businesses and minimize cybersecurity risks, here are some of the effective solutions. Comodo: Comodo is an award-winning security provider offering a plethora of essential security features that are essential to provide security for your business. It has many free tools as well as paid tools which can be purchased by paying an affordable price. Some of its notable solutions include Comodo One, an IT management platform; and Comodo Securebox to provide security against malware. There are many other solutions too. Besides these, you will get free antivirus for all your systems, firewall protection, SSL certificates, etc. Symantec: Most of the major cyber security solutions cater to the needs of multinational and large businesses and therefore are not feasible for small businesses. But Symantec is an exception in this regard. Besides for large enterprises, Symantec provides comprehensive security packages for the small business at affordable costs. The security package of Symantec includes antivirus, firewall protection, auto-backup of data, data recovery, e-mail scanning, and many others to ensure data privacy and system protection. CloudFlare: Cloudflare is a free tool that offers protection against cyber-attacks such as SQL injections and denial of services (DoS) that have the potential to cause the complete shutdown of your website. The most promising feature of Cloudflare is that it can automatically detect any malicious attacks, block them and also generate reports to inform the users. Besides, this tool may determine the authenticity of new users by evaluating factors such as IP address, history, etc. It also allows the users to block specific IP addresses, and enable firewall protection and SSL security certificates to ensure data protection. ESET: ESET is a universal solution for the security of all your devices. ESET offers a wide array of security packages that can provide security for computers, mobile devices, servers and networks. The company provides the option for customized security tool for businesses which includes endpoint security, e-mail security, file security, virtualization security, etc. Random.org: Creating strong passwords for your accounts is the prerequisite for preventing your account from unauthorized access. Random.org is a security website that generates passwords automatically in a random manner. The passwords generated can be up to 24 characters in length and consist of case-sensitive alphanumeric and special characters. These are strong as well as secure as compared to manually typed passwords, and thus, are difficult to crack. Network security is one of the major issues to be taken care of in the cyber world. Computer networks are the soft targets of cyber criminals and it cannot be denied that such cyber-criminal activities are going to increase in future. However, businesses can adopt efficient cybersecurity solutions to protect them from malicious activities and also minimize the losses due to them.

Katara Hospitality as Hospitality Partner, to increase awareness of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value, and make tourism a positive change for good. World Tourism Day comes at a time when Qatar’s tourism sector is experiencing exciting and monumental change. Last month, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, Qatar Tourism Authority, and Qatar Airways launched visafree entry to Qatar for citizens of more than 80 countries. Last year it also introduced a 96-hour transit visa, which allowed passengers transiting at Hamad International Airport the option of leaving the airport and exploring the city for up to of 96 hours, as long as they had a return ticket. The growing demand for this will place Qatar amongst the world’s most popular destinations for long-haul transit visits. Discover Qatar, a division set up by Qatar Airways to advance the development of Qatar as a premium tourist destination, has also reached millions of people around the world with engaging marketing and advertising campaigns to encourage and promote visa and holiday packages. As part of Discover Qatar, the airline recently launched ‘+Qatar’ in partnership with Qatar Tourism Authority
and Qatar’s hospitality sector, a free transit visa and the offer of free 4-star and 5-star hotel stays for First, Business and Economy passengers stopping over in Qatar. As part of Qatar Airways’ combined efforts to boost tourism in the country, the awardwinning airline has accelerated its global expansion plans, and recently added a number of new destinations to its expanding global network, including Kyiv, Ukraine; Prague, Czech Republic; and Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Qatar Airways also recently launched direct service to Sohar, Sultanate of Oman; Nice, France and Skopje, connecting even more people to more places, and making it easier than ever for passengers to visit Qatar as part of their journey. The award-winning airline’s upcoming destinations include Adana, Turkey; Cardiff, Wales; Canberra, Australia and Chiang Mai, Thailand, to name just a few. World Tourism Day is observed each year on 27 September as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), part of the United Nations (UN), looks to mark the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.

he Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), formed by the Qatar Government to oversee important operations related to the 2022 FIFA World Cup to deliver the required infrastructure for the event, has awarded the contract for manufacturing and installing stadium seats at Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah stadiums to Coastal Group based in Qatar. In addition to the two stadium projects awarded by the SC, a third project for Al Bayt Stadium has been awarded by Aspire Zone Foundation to Coastal Group.
“Our goal is to be one of the leading and most innovative companies in our sector in the country and the region, with the capabilities to absorb knowledge from leading international companies and transfer that knowledge locally,” he added.
“We are very proud to announce that these seats for the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be made in Qatar,” said Hassan Al Thawadi, SC Secretary General.
Coastal Group is a cluster of related businesses focusing on steel fabrication, steel galvanizing, trading, healthcare and seat-manufacturing. The conglomerate based in Doha has been a key player in the Qatari construction sector and has been actively involved in several leading projects such as Aspire Stadium, Hamad International Airport, Khalifa Stadium, Lusail Multipurpose Hall, National Museum of Qatar and Qatar Foundation, to name a few. Coastal Group, through its subsidiary Coastal Trading and Contracting, has inked an agreement with Forum Seating – a brand owned by European-based Nowy Styl Group for manufacturing the stadium seats with the respective firm’s technology. Coastal Group has set up a seat-manufacturing facility in New Industrial Area, Qatar, for the production of highquality stadium seats required for the three stadiums. The facility is capable of producing up to 15,000 seats per month. State-of-the-art polymer injection-molding machinery is used to manufacture the seats. The seatmanufacturing process is completely automated which, in turn, reduces health and safety risks for employees at the facility, while making sure the manufacturing process is highly effective and efficient. The contract awarded to Coastal Group marks another milestone in the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy’s commitment to promote the local industry and this contract awarded to Coastal Group ensures the same since the stadium seats will be manufactured at Coastal Group’s Seat-Manufacturing facility located in Qatar.
“Creating an impact on Qatar’s economy was a key component in our bid to win the FIFA World Cup hosting rights. By facilitating local contractors and companies to take part in the construction of the infrastructure for the tournament, we are delivering one of our key legacy commitments and ensuring the benefits of the 2022 FIFA World Cup are felt across the country,” he added. The technology partnership with Forum Seating allows Coastal to manufacture the award-winning spectator seats used in major stadiums across the world in Qatar and this would put the state on the exporting nations’ map. The company aims to procure the demands for stadium seats in Qatar as well as to be capable for exporting the same to the MENA region, and gradually to the whole of Asia.
The seat-manufacturing process at Coastal Group’s facility has started and even made great progress – with 35,000 seats already manufactured and delivered to Al Wakrah Stadium. The production of seats for Al Bayt and Al Rayyan stadium are in process as per the project schedule. Coastal’s manufacturing facility has been designed and set up with sufficient capacity to allow the firm to manufacture seats required for all seven stadiums. The whole of Qatar can be proud about the fact that FIFA 2022 will be made possible through activities of the local industry along with the government’s support. The Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah stadiums will have 40,000 seats each in tournament phase and Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City will have a seating of 60,000.
“We are extremely delighted to be the first state-of-theart stadium seat-manufacturer in the GCC region and we feel extremely proud about the fact that our firm is able to contribute to the Qatar National Vision 2030 that aims to transform Qatar into an advanced economy, capable of achieving sustainable development by 2030,” stated Nishad Azeem, CEO, Coastal Group.
We are honored to be part of one of Qatar’s largest upcoming event with our ‘Made-in-Qatar’ seats
“Our aim is to produce high-quality and sustainable stadium seats while making sure our carbon foot print is at the lowest. The stadium seats fall under the ‘Madein-Qatar’ initiative, with both manufacturing and assembling of the product being done in our seat-manufacturing facility located in Qatar,” the CEO said.

Qatar’s fast-paced construction Qatar’s fast-paced construction industry embracing creativity industry embracing creativity and innovation and innovation Qatar aims to continue adopting new-age construction techniques that are environment-friendly, economic and innovative
Q
atar’s economy continues to grow at a fast pace while the state is making huge strides in urban development. As Qatar’s infrastructure facilities wit-
ness a major expansion, new buildings, modern shopping malls and entertainment zones are cropping up all over Doha and other townships in the country. The growth and prospect of Qatar is being displayed in its construction industry in the form of creative architecture and use of innovative technology with the object of achieving sophistication, modernization as well as beautification of the city skyline. This adds to the country’s tourism value as a whole. But the million dollar question is how this innovative approach has been induced in Qatari culture? Let’s take a close view. Architecture in Qatar The latest trend of Qatari architecture is based on innovative simplicity and is closely related to tradition and heritage. For example, the latest stadium for 2022 World Cup in Qatar is being built in the shape of a “gahfiya” – a tightly-fitted cap worn by Arab men as part of their traditional dress. Experiments on architectural innovation are going on in Qatar with designers taking inspiration from the country’s tradition. This, often, makes the country look like an innovative architectural lab.
Because of these design experiments, Doha is counted as one of the “must-see” spots for modern architecture aficionados with iconic projects like Museum of Islamic Art, Msheireb Properties, Faculty of Islamic Studies in Education City, Qatar National Museum, West Bay Business District, etc gaining international acclaim.
Qatar’s construction industry is trying its best to use local resources and reduce environment pollution as much as possible.
According to one of the leading architects in the state, “Qatar is completely motivated to make certain its unique legacy and ethnicity remain with us, grounding the base of the growth on the variation of micro-climatic system with an ardent stimulation that challenges to evoke what made the traditional exclusively special.”
*The use of dune sand has been banned and it has created a major impact on the construction industry. However, wadi gravel is available almost free of cost so the alternative product has gained great popularity.
Green construction Instead of regular construction materials, architectural engineers and builders in Qatar are seeking to move towards using economic and eco-friendly products to construct buildings. For example, wadi gravel, recycled steel-slag, and used cooking oils are being applied in random for construction of modern buildings in Qatar, which are environment friendly and cost efficient in price. While steel slag is the byproduct of stainless steel manufacturing process, gravel is the byproduct of sand, washed and pre-processed. Innovative approach * Of late, wadi gravel is increasingly being used for land refilling. This highlights the fact that
*Construction experts are also trying their best to make energy-efficient roads so that logistics and transportation become better and cost effective.
*The use of veg-block is another major step toward recycling for saving environment in Qatar. The manufacturing process of the veg-blocks saves energy in comparison to traditional concrete-block manufacturing. *Heat-reflective paint is used for tunnels, bridges and different commercial buildings, reducing cooling needs. This also promises a greener and cleaner environment around. Modular construction Modular construction is becoming popular in Qatar. This is a space-saver technology for accommodating more utility features. Instead of having elaborate project design layout, modular construction gets completed within a smaller time frame and without wasting constriction material.
Enhanced safety Qatar’s construction industry has become quite organized and as a result labor welfare has become an integral part of site management in Qatar. This is one of the major principles of Qatar’s urban development. The safety features include wider use of sign boards, sidewalks and fences so that risky works like scaffolding, lifting, managing vibrations, risk of slip from height can all be prevented. Multiple benefits There are multiple benefits of using innovative and creative approaches in the construction process. These are: * 90-92% faster turnaround time, * Use of 100 % recycled components * Waste management up to 85% * Reduce logistics and labor cost by enhancing energy-efficiency of an entire setting. Advantages of this modernization drive faster project completion time, best ROI, maintaining health and safety standards, reducing the risk of accidents. The construction industry is playing a vital role in achieving scientific and ergonomic infrastructure development in Qatar and thereby it is attracting foreign investments into the country which is completely consistent with its vision of becoming a top hub in the region for hosting world events like the FIFA World Cup 2022.

S
afety in formwork operations mainly consists of two aspects: the working environment for workers, and effective design and construction to ensure stability and longevity of the structures erected. To achieve success in these aspects, adequate planning before and during the construction process is a must so that the structures are erected without compromising on the safety of workers and machinery. In addition to planning, effective designs and adequate construction methods for the formwork should be adopted. By following these steps in a concrete manner, a strong and durable structure can be built. Here are some of the major hazards in formwork and scaffolding work.
Accidents due to falls Accidents occurring due to falls are considered the primary hazard because they are fatal in nature. Some of the major reasons for fall accidents include slippery surfaces, congested work areas, improper setting of ladders, no provision for fall-arrest systems, lack of guardrails and restricted accessibility to operation sites.
tion of lungs. Frequent contact with these harmful chemicals may also cause irritation of skin and further aggravation of the situation can lead to redness, inflammation or dermatitis. Also, contact with concrete or cement for a prolonged period, especially when accumulated inside boots, may lead to the above medical conditions. • Dust and concrete particles: During operations such as chipping or cleaning of formwork, dust and concrete particles may be blown that may come in contact with eyes of workers and cause injuries. • Poor lighting: Dim or inadequate lighting in work areas, especially during nights, while carrying out risky operations such as installing or stripping forms, or placing concrete, may lead to potential hazards. • Equipment: Equipment utilized during formwork operations, such as ladders and scaffolds, are not only responsible for fall accidents but can also cause slips, trips and other accidents. Factors responsible for such accidents include improper setting up of ladders, manually carrying materials during climbing, scaffolds being erected or dismantled without fall protection.
Environmental factors
Electrical hazards
Environmental factors can also be responsible for hazards. Conditions such as rain and snow can make surfaces slippery which may eventually lead to accidents. Heavy wind is dangerous as the handling of plywood sheets can be a problem and tight bracing may be required for panels. It may also cause hardening of hoisting, mainly with large panels or tables.
Electrical equipment such as power tools, extension cords, supply and wiring systems are regularly used during forming and scaffolding operations to complete the work faster. However, using such equipment in risky conditions such as in mud, wet excavations, ground water and fresh concrete can result in short circuits and hazards.
Health hazards Various kinds of health hazards may occur during formwork operations. Form oils are sprayed during work which may cause irrita-
Material handling: There are possibilities that hazards may occur during improper handling of materials. This may lead to spraining or straining of muscles, excessive impact on joints, shoulders and back, and even bruises and crushed fingers.
Safety measures Adopting proper safety measures is essential to prevent accidents and injuries. Safety measures in formwork industry can be categorized into three stages-planning, designing, installing. Safety measures through planning
The possibility of formwork fall during erection can be checked by fully decking each lift which includes:
Planning is the first and foremost step to avoid accidents and minimize risks.
• positioning a full deck of planks during each lift
• Formwork and scaffolding operations mostly take place in congested areas which are more prone to accidents and injuries. Thus, proper planning is necessary to manage time and availability of space so as to minimize hazards and injuries.
• positioning planks on the next lift while standing on a fully decked platform
• Effective-planning should be adopted at every level, including those of managers, supervisors and workers. • Managers and supervisors should undertake effective planning regarding labor, raw materials, machinery and work schedules.
But, in some circumstances, providing edge protection on the leading edges will be necessary. Some of these situations are as follows:
• Workers should undertake proper planning regarding the implementation of best work methods and safety measures to get optimal output from their assigned tasks.
• if the height of the deck along its sides of the deck is altered during erecting and no joists or form ply has been implemented at this varied height
Safety measures through designing
• if a leading edge is to be left unattended and the deck needs to be accessed by persons other than form workers
• The designing and construction of formwork should be done considering stripping, pouring and removing of formwork. Filter strips or crush plates should be applied at corners of wooden forms so that the strips can be easily removed using a wrecking bar. Removal of strips allows easier stripping of adjacent panels. • The strips should be designed keeping clearance at the edges of the panels to accommodate wrecking bars.
• The pick points used for hoisting should be specifically designed so that the panel is adjusted properly during installation, concrete placement and removal. Also, the strong backs and wales should be properly attached to the formwork. Safety measures through installation Erecting Formwork frames: The erecting of formwork frames should be carried out

• leaving each lift fully decked in place until it is dismantled Edge protection on the formwork deck: In case of formwork having complex designing, it may not be viable to give edge protection due to the varying profile of the deck. In fact, providing edge protection may lead to further hazards. For instance, during installation of edge protection, workers may be prone to risks and injuries.
• Planning has a significant role to play in the areas of fall protection, material placing, material handling and work platforms.
• A wall form should be designed in such a way that it will be capable to withstand loads and forces exerted by hoisting.
16
considering the safety of the installers and stability of the overall structure. It should be immediately followed by attaching braces to frames. To minimize the risks of formwork fall during erection, edge protection on the frames should be installed.
• at openings in elevator shafts Formwork false deck There may be some circumstances where the deck is situated at a greater height so that the workers need to stand on a higher platform to install bearers and joists for carrying out formwork operations. In such cases, a dummy deck, known as “false deck”, can be provided to carry out operations smoothly. The false deck usually consists of form ply, scaffold planks or modular platform sections. It should be placed both inside and between formwork frames. An access opening can be provided in the deck to allow movement of materials. The construction of false deck should be carried out without having any large gaps. Safety of workers and equipment are essential factors in formwork and scaffolding operations. Formwork should be erected keeping in mind the materials used and their type. The process of installing and dismantling of formwork should be carried out by trained personnel only.

Global mega-projects for improved infrastructure Global trends such as urbanisation and the population growth are important triggers for innovations in the construction industry. We need to develop greater efficiency in construction processes in order to meet the challenges as regards infrastructure, especially in mega-cities. Infrastructure projects for the world of tomorrow are being implemented today using the expertise of Doka.
E
very year, some US$ 2.5 billion are invested in infrastructure worldwide. This is not enough by any means, as a recent study by the McKinsey Global Institute (McKinsey&Company) dated June 2016 demonstrates. As far as can be seen today, an investment of US$ 3.3 billion annually until 2030 would be necessary to keep pace with population growth, urbanisation and demographic change. In order to bridge the gap a variety of approaches will be necessary from both politics and industry. Here the construction sector is called upon in particular. One lever would be an increase in productivity in the construction of infrastructure projects, because a reduction in construction times reduces at the same time the required investment. Innovation for an improved infrastructure It is evident that an enormous amount of potential is still dormant within the construction sector. According to a study some 57% of the operations in construction are due to activities which do not create added value – for example, inefficiencies, errors or lack of communication. And if we study the development of productivity in the building industry in important industrial countries like Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, it is clear that during the past twenty years this has stagnated or even declined, as the current study by the McKinsey Global Institute proves. As a supplier to the construction industry, the Doka Group makes an important contribution to increased productivity within the sector and hence also to infrastructure projects. The international formwork experts from Austria aim to make the entire construction process even more efficient in future – from planning to building to maintenance and ultimately even the disposal of property. The formwork experts have already taken a number of crucial steps in this direction. The company deals with innovative technologies, building materials and methods. It is also expanding its expertise, most recently through the takeover of the Dutch technology company B|A|S. Doka is thus actively promoting the change in the building sector – in the direction of increased efficiency and profitability. The following projects show, how Doka puts this into practice:
Muskrat Falls – A superlative hydraulic power station project (CAN)
Concreting on this site had to continue even when temperatures plummeted to -40 Celsius in winter and rose to +30 Celsius in summer. With hundreds of measurements, Concremote – the new concrete sensor technology by Doka – ensured reliable on-site temperature monitoring and hence secured the quality of the mass concrete structures. Temperature development measurements are fundamental for monitoring thermal stresses in the concrete that develop as a result of temperature variances. This data helps to put into place avoidance actions mitigating development of thermal cracks and the potential for future structural damage. Three World Trade Center – New York acquired 260,000 m² more infrastructure (USA)

OCTOBER 2017
The project is on track for a 2020 launch where this state-of-the art integrated metro line will be one of the most advanced rail transit systems in the world. The Doha Metro includes in the first phase over 111 km of underground tunnel sections and 37 stations. The Red Line, also known as the Coastal Line, forms the key line in Qatar’s infrastructure system. In order to expedite the progress on site, Doka Qatar provided pre-assembly services for the Large-area formwork Top 50 base slabs, lining walls, lift walls and staircase walls, as well as pre-assembly of the Load-bearing tower Staxo 100. Fabrizio Fara, Assistant Construction Manager ISG JV pointed out how Doka added to efficiency on site: “The Doka system is known for its dependable quality, however in addition to this, the industry knowhow amongst both the sales and engineering teams has offered a big advantage in terms of job safety and efficiency.”
Motorway bridge SO 223 – top bridgebuilding technology for Slovakia (SVK)
More than 1 km in length, the bridge on the D3 motorway near Zilina, the fourth largest city in Slovakia, will ease the traffic situation in the country’s north-western region. Two separate bridges, each with a carriageway width of 11 m, will carry the motorway across a reservoir on the River Vah. Various formwork solutions were used on account of the project’s complexity. They were planned by the engineers at Česká Doka branch. Progress on this build was rapid, because the equipment deployed included several Cantilever formwork travellers. Due to short site-erection times, fast repositioning and cycle times, formworking operations could move ahead at a rate of 40 m per week. Aurora – Living space on 92 storeys (AUS)
Queensferry Crossing – World’s longest cable-stayed bridge with 3 towers (GBR)
The optimum formwork solution could be defined early in the project. Also regarding safety Doka supplied top quality. The safety systems incorporated into the solution surpassed the requirements of New York City’s building code and those of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The skyscraper was designed by architect Richard Rogers and offers over 260,000 m2 office and shop space. Also for the Towers 2 and 4 the formwork solution was provided by Doka. Gerald Desmond Bridge – A bridge solution for one of America’s busiest ports (USA)
Graz Southern Ring Road – An important infrastructure project for Austria (AUT) The Graz Southern Ring Road forms part of an important infrastructure project in Austria which will be completed in 2017. Along a length of two kilometres, 1.4 km of which will be a tunnel construction, the road will run in future as a four-lane carriageway, most of it underground. As a result, traffic jams will be a thing of the past. The DokaCC formwork traveller combined with Concremote, Doka’s digital concrete monitoring system, ensures that the tight five-day cycle time with the planned 12 m can actually be kept to.
Doha Metro – Public transport infrastructure for Qatar (QAT)
On this infrastructure build the self-climbing formwork from Doka proved very cost-effective, because it required no additional crane time and keeps construction progressing in an 8-day cycle.

On Scotland’s east coast, not far from Edinburgh, the Queensferry Crossing viaduct is under construction across the Firth of Forth. 2.7 km in length, when finished it will be the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge with 3 towers. Composite bridge travellers from Doka were used for the formwork of the twin viaducts.
Northern Hub – Faster rail connections for the North of England (GBR)
Melbourne’s second-highest residential building, which is being erected in the city centre, will even have direct access to the underground “City Loop Line”. The formwork expertise of Doka and its Australian subsidiary Lubeca ensures that construction progress is rapid. The core of the building is being built using two climbing systems. This solution ensures fast cycle times and at the same time fewer workers are needed in comparison to more conventional methods of construction. Aurora is rising skyward in a four-day to five-day cycle time. When completed, the high-rise will provide space for 941 flats, 250 serviced apartments and office and shopping space.
New, faster rail links for the north of England is the objective of the rail project Northern Hub. When finished, the mega-project will link the region’s major cities, with Manchester as the main node. One of the biggest challenges on this project is that some of the new railway bridges are right beside listed structures of historic importance. Doka was able to provide custom-tailored formwork solution for the complex design of the viaduct piers. At the same time Doka speeded up work routines by delivering the pre-assembled formwork ready-to-use to site.
About Doka: Doka is a world leader in developing, manufacturing and distributing formwork technology for use in all fields of the construction sector. With more than 160 sales and logistics facilities in over 70 countries, the Doka Group has a highperforming distribution network which ensures that equipment and technical support are provided swiftly and professionally. An enterprise forming part of the Umdasch Group, the Doka Group employs a worldwide workforce of more than 6,000.
Additionally, 110 bridge deck units weighing 760 metric tonnes were built with static shoring and formwork from Doka. The formwork solution from Doka ensured speedy progress on the build.

High-rise buildings: High-rise buildings: issues ofof safety and issues safety and security security
M
ost people in metropolitan cities now tend to live in apartments in high-rise buildings. But living in high-rises presents a set of challenges regarding safety and this aspect needs proper attention. Fire safety is an important requirement if you are living in a condominium. You should be knowledgeable about fire safety methods and ways to deal with such emergencies. The first step towards safety First, it is important to make yourself thoroughly familiarize with the interiors and layouts of your building. Make sure that you know about all the exits, fire alarms and all the stairways that lead to the exit of the building. Before any mishap, you can set a safe meeting place for all family members staying with you away from your building where they can wait till each one of them arrives. In this way, people can easily save themselves from hazards such as earthquakes, fires, or other calamities.
High-rise fall protection There should be proper safety tools for workers who are engaged in the construction of high-rise buildings. High-rise safety straps are the most common tool that the contractors working in a big building should use for accident prevention. This consists of a D-ring which is fixed to a web strap and a protective e sleeve. This special equipment provides an adjustable safety attribute for the individual. This is easy to use and do not take much time to install. Safety straps are available in varying lengths which you can use according to the requirement.
may spread to any extent which requires careful preparations.
slightly open them from bottom or top until smoke or fire starts entering.
A disorganized evacuation can result in confusion, injury, and property damage. The following suggestions should be considered during a fire emergency.
Use stairs instead of elevators: Unless the fire extinguisher team instruct you to use the elevators, do not use it. Only a few people can use the elevator at a particular time, so it’s not an effective way to evacuate all of them at the same time. Sometimes, the fire-fighting team may also need elevators to extinguish blaze from a particular area. Elevators may also get filled with smoke which can be highly dangerous.
Fire emergency
Quick evacuation: When you get instructions for evacuation from apartment, you must do it quickly before the fire spreads. Stay calm and follow the directions and do not inhale smoke. In case you do not see any fire in adjacent rooms, prepare to run quickly by shutting all the doors behind you. This will prevent spreading of fire in the house.
In case of a fire emergency, the decision to stay or leave depends upon the type of building you are living in. If you are living in a fireproof building, the fire is most likely to be contained in the area from where it has started. It is advisable to stay in your fireproof block and call emergency helpline for help. In non-fireproof buildings, the fire
Keep calm and stay wherever you are: Do not leave the building until fire exterminators give instructions to do so and until and unless any heat, smoke, or medical issue forces you from doing so. One can use towels or clothes for stuffing under the doors to restrict air vents and spreading of fire. Do not break the windows but you can
Precautionary measures: Make a safe evacuation emergency plan and practise it with the people in your house. Remove all flammable materials from your house to avoid fire. Dry grass and the wooden material are a fuel for the fire, so keep your lawn fully hydrated and well maintained. Consult with the local fire administration about how to prepare and when to evacuate under such circumstances.

ees so that they can stay at the best point of their expertise. Unless regular training is given, workers in a scaffolding company may lose their integrity and that can lead to any mishaps. Before selecting a scaffolding company, check if the company maintains a trained staff for its complicated scaffolding and formwork.
Check for safety features
A good scaffolding company must have due insurance coverage plans for its workers so that if anything wrong happens, the laborers concerned and their families could be taken care of. Before hiring a company, don’t forget to check the availability of insurance coverage for its staff.
Scaffolding and formwork is an intricate service and is involved with a high risk of accident and injury if the support structure is not properly executed. The most intricate part of building this structure is the understanding about the need of the construction and use of proper materials to ensure the safety of the workers concerned. Only a reputable scaffolding company can ensure the right safety assessment for a construction site. Introducing Micropiles as an alternative solution for structures facing uplift problems in Middle East. Underground structures like tunnels, through structures and railway station are often subjected to considerable uplift forces due to the high ground water level. To overcome these uplift forces it is possible to increase the thickness of the bottom slab of the structure to create enough dead weight. However when increasing the bottom slab thickness

than 30 years. Micropiles are piles with a borehole diameter of max. 300mm and an internal steel element, which is able to carry tension or compression loads. The load transfer to the ground is achieved via skin friction. Despite the small diameter which enables quick installation in the solid ground conditions like for example in Qatar, the Micropiles develop a high carrying capacity due to their relatively high circumference.
GEWI® piles are being used in Germany and Europe for solving uplift problems since more

T
he Lusail Boulevard Tunnel, which is constructed by Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) and Teyseer JV on behalf of the Lusail Real Estate Development Company (LREDC), allows the A3 Road to pass under the main boulevard. It is one of the largest tunnels ever constructed in the Middle East.
The main contract was to construct the cut and cover tunnel plus all associated structures and services. The total length of the tunnel is 2 kilometers, including troughs, while the covered element extends over 650 meters. The overall width is around 45 meters incorporating three cells: two lanes each for north and south bound roads and an approximately 13 meter wide provision for a light rail transit system in the middle cell. The total volume of concrete poured was in excess of 300,000 m3. With the sheer volume of concrete involved, one of the central challenges of the project would be to get all the complex structures cast of in the short timeframe required by contract. The formwork system used would be key and the contractor’s strategy was to look for a system with a rapid cycle that was still safe and easy to operate. With this in mind CCC turned to Delmon for a cost-effective solution. Delmon Scaffolding LLC is distributer for ULMA and supplies formwork and scaffolding solutions throughout the Middle East. They are headquartered in Dubai but have sub-offices in Doha, Sharjah Muscat, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.

Challenges The tunnel walls were formidable, up to 13m high, 2m wide and had to be cast in a single pour. This height of fresh concrete will generate intense pressure on the formwork so any proposal needed to be robust, but also quick and easy to use in order to achieve the rapid cycle required. The roof slab was also challenging, approximately 30,000 m2 total area, 1.8 deep and with a clear height under soffit of 9 meters. Shoring towers are ideal for this type of application, but because of the scale of the project, it was feared that assembly, dismantling, transporting and reassembling for the each pour would consume enormous resources and time. Solution For the walls, ULMA Enkoform was the ideal and obvious solution. Enormously versatile, the VM20 beam and DU Waler spacing can be adjusted to cope with any geometry or loading, allowing it to handle the huge concrete pressure involved, while still being relatively quick and easy to handle for the contractor. For the slab, ULMA T60 shoring towers were well suited in terms of the load bearing capacity and the height under soffit, but with the vast quantity of slabs would be somewhat labor-intensive. “In order to overcome this problem, we proposed to configure the T60 into ‘preassembled tables’ that could be
stripped and moved without dismantling,” said Delmon Scaffolding LLC. “We quickly devised a general layout in which rows of tables were stripped while still leaving two lines to back prop, which we estimated would reduce the labor required by as much as 75% compared to the conventional approach,” the company said. Due to the significant advantages of time and cost saving offered, Delmon was duly awarded the formwork contract and commenced supply almost immediately. The contract program was extremely challenging; however, the contractor, with full support from Delmon Logistics, Engineering and Field Assistance teams, quickly mobilized and began progressing the structure. The formwork solution given by Delmon proved a hugely effective and contributed to the success of the project. The slab works commenced in August 2015 and finished on schedule in March 2016, despite the late start of this activity. Conclusion Recalling the project, Regional Sales Director Frank Abbott commented: “The success of this project highlights the importance of the team behind the equipment. The Delmon infrastructure team understood the challenges of this project from the outset and were able to propose an innovative solution formwork that ultimately saved our client time and money. ”

economical, comfortable, sporty and manual. Engine, accelerator and transmission response are then adapted accordingly. The interior of the V-Class is a completely new MPV experience. And not only because it is pleasantly quiet. High-quality materials with a pleasant touch and feel and a harmonious colour concept, intricate details as well as a progressive and sensuous design idiom convey outstanding highclass appeal in the segment – and that hallmark “welcome home” feeling typical of MercedesBenz cars. A particular eye-catcher is the dynamically styled two-part dashboard. The upper and lower sections are separated by a large, three-dimensional trim element that creates an impression of width and underscores the high-class appeal. Mercedes-Benz Vito Offering tangible external strengths, great intrinsic values, maximum benefit and low costs, the new Mercedes-Benz Vito is the versatile and real professional among mid-size vans. sengers. Available in three basic designs – Vito Tourer BASE, Tourer PRO and Tourer SELECT – it serves all segments in the field of commercial passenger transport. The Vito Mixto makes life easy for you: whether if you have to transport people, cargo or both, the Vito Mixto is an economical, versatile and reliable partner. You can choose between a two- or threepassenger bench seat in the rear, and optionally equipped with a twin co-driver’s seat the Vito Mixto carries up to six people and still offers plenty of space for materials and equipment behind the bench seat. Performance: Powerful and efficient petrol engine. The Vito uses the best of what Mercedes-Benz has to offer. The M274 is a well proven and tested turbocharged petrol engine known from other models. With a delivery of 211 Hp and 350 Nm (10 Nm more than the previous V6 engine) it delivers great performance with optimum efficiency. In terms of power ratings and performance characteristics the engine in the Vito is tuned precisely to the requirements profile of a MercedesBenz van. From the air ducting and mass air flow sensor to the exhaust system, the engine is designed specifically for the Vito. Power delivery and drive ability, cold-starting properties and control of injection, noise characteristics and exemplary exhaust gas quality, as well as the measures employed to optimise fuel consumption, are all as you would expect from Mercedes-Benz and the new Vito. Air conditioning is as individual as the Vito itself: every customer can arrange these systems to suit their specific model and deployment scenario. TEMPMATIC semi-automatic climate control for the cab is optional.

eveloping a strategy to launch transport projects under a privatesector participation (PSP) model was the theme of a workshop held recently by the Ministry of Transport and Communications in co-operation with various public and private stakeholders. The strategy aims to leverage capital and efficiencies associated with the private sector in delivering excellent transport infrastructure projects. The workshop, which mulled over a project on “private-sector participation strategy for Qatar’s transport sector”, was attended by representatives from the Ministry, Qatar
Chamber, various government entities, mobility and transportation industry, private sector companies and financial institutions.
standards, policies, and programs that help encourage larger private sector participation in national projects,” it pointed out.
The workshop sought to understand views of all these entities for the best execution and outcome of the project.“The project translates directives of Qatar’s wise leadership on the importance of boosting private sector participation in economic projects across the country with a view to maximizing its contribution to the development process nationwide,” a statement said.
The project aims to increase private sector participation in Qatar’s transport infrastructure development, attract more of its investments, develop a PSP Strategy and Framework for the transport sector at the national level and understand its readiness to receive such participation.
“It also reflects the considerable attention the Qatari leadership pays to the regulation,
It also aims to drive private sector’s investment into mobility and transport projects by creating a chain of potential projects.
The PSP Framework is going to cover all modes of transport, including rail, marine, bus, taxi and aviation. The aim of the consultancy project is to identify potential PSP projects, produce a policy framework and strategy to address challenges and capitalize on opportunities. Among projects that were reviewed at the workshop included one on a “pilot” plan for implementation under the PSP Framework. The Ministry is set to finalize that strategy before the end of this year.
Aspetar workshop for healthcare providers Aspetar workshop for healthcare providers tackles concussion-related sportssports injuries tackles concussion-related injuries
A
t the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Germany, Uruguay’s Alvaro Pereira collapsed on the field after receiving a blow to the head in their match against England, Argentina’s Javier Mascherano suffered a head injury at the semifinal against Netherlands and German midfielder Christoph Kramer sustained a head injury during their World Cup final against Argentina, as a result of which he couldn’t remember most of the game, according to statements he made to Sports Illustrated. These are just a few of the renowned cases where coaches have allowed players to return to the field of play without properly checking for any signs of brain injuries. This has prompted international bodies, including FIFA and the English Premier League, to revise their protocol regarding brain-sustained injury, particularly concussion.
Aspetar – the orthopedic sports medicine hospital in Qatar – recently organized the first concussion symposium in the Middle East, titled “Aspetar Sport Related Concussion Workshop for Healthcare Providers”. The workshop tackled the latest issues related to concussion and offered comprehensive training to healthcare providers on Aspetar’s protocol to help identify and treat concussion injuries in sports, on and off the field.
Concussion is a traumatic brain injury following direct contact or sudden acceleration and deceleration of the brain inside the skull.
Contrary to popular belief, concussions injuries are not always a result of a blow to the head. Such injuries could be caused by a direct hit anywhere in the body if it transmits an impulsive force to the head. Concussions occur across all sports, with multiple studies reporting that the highest incidence rates happen in American football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. The conversation around concussion in recent years has been mostly focused on aggressive and physical sports such as American Football and Hockey, with much of the research around it being conducted in the US. However, less is discussed or studied about the prevalence of concussion-related injuries on Association football players and Olympic athletes outside of the US, and even less focuses on athletes in the Middle East region. Speaking about the topic, Dr Scott Gillogly, Chief Medical Officer at Aspetar, said: “Aspetar recognizes the importance of proper concussion care to prevent serious compli-
cations among athletes, such as second-impact syndrome, post-concussion syndrome and the possible association with the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).” The workshop drew on the expertise of Aspetar’s staff in the field of sports medicine to offer a range of concussion-related topics and its implications on athletes in Qatar particularly, and worldwide generally. These included introductory sessions on concussion management, neuropsychological aspects and physiotherapist treatment
of concussion, on-field recognition and removal steps, field side assessment, computerized neurocognitive testing, concussion monitoring and referral, return-to-play postconcussion, as well as ethical and legal issues surrounding it. The workshop was organized by the Aspetar Sport Related Concussion Program, a comprehensive concussion management program offering evidence-based concussion care for athletes everywhere, particularly locally.

CAREER SITES
Here Hereisishow howtotodetermine determine your youremployees’ employees’salaries salaries
S
alaries are one of the most critical aspects of talent management. Although employees care about a multitude of different attributes when selecting a job, such as job responsibilities; management style; and opportunities for career advancements, money remains a very important factor in the equation. Many companies find it quite challenging to come up with their salary decisions. There are many factors to be taken into consideration. What is the employee’s career level? How much value will they add to the company? How profitable is the company? What is the state of the economy like? What are the laws and regulations? What is the cost of living? Here are some of the most essential elements and tools that can be used to make salary decisions easily and much more accurately: Internal pay scales Most established companies have a specific pay scale that they generally adhere to. The pay scale usually plots salary ranges for different positions in each unique department. It also indicates the salary progression as the employee accumulates more years of experience and tenure with the same employer. Using pay scales, the employer gains an idea of the cost of their employees’ salaries over a longer period of time, which as a result enables them to make well-planned decisions regarding annual raises, bonuses, and such. Industry and market benchmarks Without doubt, managers and HR professionals do not arbitrarily pick their salary ranges and pay rates. Even when constructing their own pay scales, they often need to look at labor laws, market averages, and industry benchmarks beforehand. This is to make sure that they do not under-compensate or over-compensate their employees for their work, that they stay in a competitive position among other employers, and that they do not violate any minimum wage or union laws. But researching all of these different elements and coming up with a number can still be very cumbersome and timeconsuming. Employers are often too busy to dedicate the time for such a process and may not even have the expertise or the tools to conduct an in-depth compensation analysis. Because companies truly need a tool to help them benchmark and gain indepth salary information, Bayt.com, the Middle East’s #1 job site, introduced the region’s first salary search tool. Thousands of employers across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are using this tool to search salaries based on
specific locations, industries, positions, career levels and many more criteria. Using a tool like Bayt.com Salary Search, employers can benchmark against realtime industry data; analyze and compare employees, positions, or entire pay structures; and make confident decisions regarding their salaries. Previous salaries Another tool that employers commonly rely on when determining their pay rates is knowing the candidates’ previous salaries. On a job application or during the interview stage, an employer may ask the job candidate how much they were paid in their previous position(s). The number given by the job seeker would be used as the benchmark and would help the employer determine how much to offer. Job seekers who use Bayt.com have the option of listing their previous salaries as well as their target salary, which helps employers screen candidates before conducting an interview or moving forward with a particular applicant. Likewise, employers have the option of stating their salary range on their job descriptions. Negotiation One thing to keep in mind is that salaries aren’t set in stone. Most often than not, job candidates and employers engage in a negotiation phase. This could start during the job interview. Employers often ask about salary expectations, which would let them know if the job candidate will fit or break their hiring budget. Once a job offer is extended, negotiation often takes place in order to arrive at the most reasonable compensation. Some companies, however, are inflexible and do not negotiate their offers. The full package Another point to remember is that compensation includes more than just the salary. Most compensation packages include benefits. Things like health insurance, transportation, housing and education allowances are to be considered when looking at and negotiating a salary. These benefits have monetary value that you could even list and explain for a potential employee.

Added value Finally, keep in mind that salary decisions can also be circumstantial. If a company is interviewing an outstanding candidate, who has a very impressive experience and skillset, yet an expensive salary expectation, it is not unwise to bend the salary ranges a little bit. When employers are truly interested in hiring the best of the best, the chances are they will need to offer more in return. As a result, hiring managers need to evaluate the “added value” of a new hire in order to determine how much they should be compensated.

Qatar is encouraging a range of initiatives to increase ICT awareness among the population. Recent initiatives by the government – such as the training of web developers and designers, or the development of IT talent programmes by the MTC – aim to ensure the country strengthens its ICT and innovation fundamentals. Globally speaking, Qatar is already well placed in terms of digital technology readiness and innovation. In the “Global Information Technology Report 2016” by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Qatar ranked 27th out of 139 markets on the networked readiness index, which aggregates data from 53 indicators. The country performed strongly in several segments, including government use of ICT and national ICT skills, placing fifth for both worldwide. The regulatory landscape, as well as business and innovation environment also ranked high, coming in at 18th and 15th, respectively. However, with the country ranking 120th on the WEF’s affordability sub-index, there is scope to bring down the cost of ICT in some areas. Some services, such as leased lines, are comparatively expensive, leading the sector regulator, the Communications Regulatory Authority, to announce in December that it was seeking to boost the availability of competitively priced services for business to support the country’s economic diversification. By contrast, in 2015 the cost of an entry-level purchase of at least 500 MB of pre-paid data for a mobile handset – which in Qatar actually buys customers 3 GB of data – was equivalent to 0.29% of GNI per capita in 2015, the 18th cheapest in the world, according to the International Telecommunication Union. This improved to sixth cheapest for the post-paid purchase of 1 GB of computer-based mobile broadband (at 0.21% of GNI per capita).

Issue No. (123) October 2017, Doha - Qatar
RoofRoof installation begins at 2022 installation begins at 2022 World CupCup semi-final stadium World semi-final stadium and manufactured in Italy and then sent directly to Qatar for installation. The stadium’s facade structure is also being assembled in Germany, where it is being shaped and painted to represent a traditional nomadic tent. The fabric engulfing the facade is one-of-a-kind and has been developed specifically for Al Bayt Stadium. The facade will be transported over various shipments to Turkey, where it will be cut and fabricated into its final installation-ready form to be fitted at the stadium.
C
onstruction at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor City, a proposed semi-venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, continues at pace, as work begins on the assembly and installation of the roof structure system. Located 40km north of Doha, the 60,000-seat stadium was designed to emulate a traditional nomadic Qatari tent. The roof structure is being designed by a German design firm before being further detailed
The facade will be made of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a white type of plastic mixed with other components, which is used in well-known football venues like the Allianz Arena in Munich and Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Aspire Zone Foundation Project Director for Al Bayt Stadium-Al Khor City, Dr Nasser Al Hajeri, praised the rapid progress being made, saying: “This is an important milestone for the project as we move towards the delivery of the sta-
dium. Once the roof structure and the outside membrane are finalized, we will be able to start installing the retractable roof.” Mohamed Ahmed, SC Project Manager for Al Bayt Stadium-Al Khor City, expressed happiness over the work progress. “We’re very happy with progress on-site, with precast fabrication now 100% completed. External piling to support the roof structure is also at full speed and 60% completed,” he said. After the tournament, the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to around 30,000 seats, with the upper tiers donated to countries in need of sporting infrastructure. The upper concourse of the stadium will then be converted into a hotel. A shopping center and a branch of Aspetar, the leading sports medicine facility, will also be incorporated into the structure alongside entertainment complexes, multipurpose halls and other venues. Parks and greenery will form an integral part of the surrounding precinct’s design plan.
