En Face Dance Force Brings Home a Grand Championship

ongratulations to the En Face Studios dance company, who brought home a grand championship. We are so extremely proud of our dancers! Our dancers trained very hard this season, and it definitely paid off! On the weekend of May 1st our company dancers completed their competition season at Encore Performing Arts competition where they brought home the prestigious division grand championship and division overall awards. Two of our dancers were

also awarded the title of Miss Junior Encore and Mr. Petite Encore. Congratulations Annabelle Finch and Jace Senior! Our dancers were fortunate enough to train with some of the best instructors in the industry, including Travis Wall, Stacy Tookey, Sonja Tayeh, tWitch, Misha Gabriel, Jess Hendricks, Francisco Gella, Todd Flannagan, and many more. Humans Who Believe in Jesus Call Themselves Christians But Don’t Forget, Christians Were Humans First

nd human we will always be, and we will make mistakes and say stupid things and forget our manners. It’s a wonder I have any friends at all. As I started this piece, I immediately thought of four experiences of “Christian” people in my life, who were so terrible to me that I hardly believed they were “Christian” at all? But not five minutes later, I was reminded of my own guilt at having done exactly the same things to other people. Nobody on earth is exempt from making an inexcusable faux pas or causing a “near miss.” Even with my church sticker on the car, I accidentally went straight in a turn-rightonly lane. I truly thought I could go straight until the blaring of a horn caught my attention, along with the look of horror on that driver’s face. But it isn’t always an accident. I’ve also been guilty of purposely choosing to do wrong, say wrong, act wrong. I shudder at the things I’ve said in public and that others have seen my unattractive

behavior, all of which I wish I could undo. But there is no back button for that.

And that goes for ALL people, Christian or not, people who read the Bible and those who don’t, people who go to church and those who don’t. Until we die, even Jesus knows our hearts whether we Christians, will say and know Him or not or choose to let Him do DUMB be a part of our lives or don’t let Him be a part of our lives. I still make mistakes. Why? Because The only difference between me, I am human. I am a Christian who is a Christian, and someone who does human. not know Jesus, is that I believe God Many people say they don’t want to will, one-by-one, take my mistakes and be a Christian or go to church because inner issues away from me and guide “they” are all hypocrites. he Auxiliary hosts a fish fry the first Friday of every month. Bring the family out for a great dinner and some fun. Adults $10 and kid’s options $5. Everyone is welcome. We will host the annual Fourth at Firestone kickoff breakfast on Saturday, July 4th, from 7 to 9:30 AM. The charge is $8.00 and includes: eggs, meats, pancakes, green chili, torts and beverages. The parade starts at 10 so come to the Post early. We will also have an information booth for those folks interested in learning about the Auxiliary activities and wanting to become members. We have many programs for veterans and families and community projects that may be of interest to many. There is a coloring contest, pg. 18, for youngsters ages 2 to 12. We would like to have as many entrants as possible. Bring these to the breakfast on July 4th. “What does it mean to be an American? “ is the theme. Hip Replacement To Walking a Golf Course In Less Than A Month

very summer Bill Plante returns to his home state of Maine to visit family and get some R & R. During Bill’s five week visit in 2014 he started experiencing tremendous pain in his hip, back and groin. “The more I was walking and the more I was spending time on the beach, in the sand, it was getting worse. By the time we were ready to leave and drive home I was really hurting.” Bill arrived back in Colorado on a Sunday and by Monday he was in his primary care physician’s office taking x-rays and investigating the problem. “Come to find out it was arthritis… I was bone on bone,” Bill said. Bill’s doctor prescribed physical therapy and pain medication to see if it would help with his pain. “I made some progress but not very quickly. Bill made an appointment with Dr. Nirav Shah and upon his first consultation both Bill and Dr. Shah agreed to try another nonsurgical alternative which was a cortisone injection. “For patients who are bone-on-bone,” Dr. Shah commented, “cortisone injections do improve pain temporarily, it may not be a complete reduction in pain but it can allow someone, such as Bill, to function more normally.” For Bill, the injection provided minimal relief and within three weeks he knew he was ready for his total hip replacement. “I tell patients you will know in your head, in your heart and in your joint when you are ready for surgery,” Dr. Shah said. Dr. Shah and Bill decided on a surgery date of Feb. 17, 2015. “I do my best to schedule a patient’s surgery around their family and travel schedule,” Dr. Shah said. “My grandson was playing in a golf tournament in Florida in

March and I wanted to be there,” Bill commented. “I asked Dr. Shah if I would be able to walk the golf course 3 ½ weeks after my surgery. He didn’t think I could walk a full 18 but he was confident I would be able to walk at least nine holes.” As planned, Bill received his total hip replacement and 25 days later he was following his grandson on the Talis Park Golf Course in Naples, Florida “not even limping. That’s how great I was,” Bill said. “Everything Dr. Shah predicted, worked. Everything he said is exactly what happened,” Bill continued. “He told me I would be walking the same day as surgery, and I was.” Bill is happy about his decision to have a hip replacement. He is equally as happy with his surgeon and will eventually elect to have his other hip replaced as well. Bill’s advice to other people considering a hip replacement: “I put up with pain for six months and in hindsight I could have cut that in half. I encourage people to get it done sooner rather than later. Pick a surgeon with a good reputation and one who has done a lot of surgeries… I had such a good experience with Dr. Shah... And, while increased conservation is important and should be pursued, numerous studies have shown it will not solve the water scarcity problem of our area by itself. We must have additional supplies. But, even though the opposition presents no real logical rationale against the NISP, it is backed by several socalled “big green” organizations like the Sierra Club and must definitely be taken seriously. Many of these organizations would be happy if there were no permanent human habitation on the Front Range and certainly don’t want to see any increase in population. They believe they can choke off growth by denying adequate water to the area. It is therefore absolutely essential that as many Carbon Valley residents as possible attend these hearings to express the need and their support for this critical project.

♦ All About Agendas and Meetings ♦ Ever wondered what the

Frederick Town Board does? Or how the agenda comes together each week? Or what each part of the agenda means? How about the difference between work sessions and executive sessions? We’ve put together some information on all of those items for you in this article. ♦ The Mayor and Town Manager work together to determine the agenda for each board meeting. These can include ongoing business as well as new items that are assigned by the Board for staff to look into and bring back to the Board at a later meeting. Town staff is also able to bring forward topics for the Board’s consideration. ♦ Items for the agenda are discussed in the Wednesday staff meeting following each Board meeting. Staff then goes back to research and prepare information on items relating to their department and responsibilities. Each item of the agenda includes a staff-prepared memorandum outlining the issue and any important supporting documents. Each item is then reviewed by the Town Attorney before being put on the agenda. Agenda items are then approved for presentation by the Town Manager, and are forwarded to the Town Clerk to assemble into a packet for the Board of Trustees. These packets are then electronically transmitted to the Board the Friday before the regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday Tony Carey

was first conceived by community members during our sales tax discussions in 2013. This community vision was made possible by the subsequent approval of the one percent sales tax increase approved in November 2013 by residents and was then augmented by a $1.3 million dollar DOLA grant, which are funds derived from oil, gas, carbon dioxide, coal and metals extracted in Colorado. The program is designed to offset impacts of the energy industry on local governments.I am excited to see this major improvement completed and another promise kept to the residents of Firestone.  As with any road project, please keep in mind the orange cones and road work zones will create temporary delays and inconvenience. We thank you in advance for your patience and tolerance to keep the construction crews and our community passengers safe. Plan on a few extra minutes to get to your destination or travel alternate routes to ease congestion. ♦ 4th at Firestone  Independence Day in Firestone is always a day packed with fun. This year’s 13th annual celebration features all kinds of

activities beginning with the American Legion Auxiliary Breakfast and Firecracker 5k & 10k early at 7 a.m. The incredible community parade begins at 10 a.m. and weaves its way through to the main event at Miners Park in Historic Firestone. Enjoy live music, free activities, rides, vendors, a classic car show, great food and more. My favorite part is honoring our veterans and active military that are responsible for our celebration of independence and freedom. Any comments or concerns brought up that require action must be placed on a later agenda at the direction of the Board.  Consent – These items are considered to be routine in nature and are enacted by one motion and vote unless a board member requests the item be removed for discussion.  Action – Items that are requested by the Board or brought up by staff and need presentation and discussion before any action is taken, but action is intended at the same meeting.  Discussion – Items of general interest to the Board where action isn’t required at the same meeting.  Mayor & Trustee Reports – Each member of the Board is allotted time to provide comments on any subject they choose, including providing comments related to anything brought up during public comment. ♦ In addition to regular board meetings, there are other types of meetings too. ♦ Work sessions take place before each regular meeting to discuss any issues that may have come up with the agenda and after to debrief from the meeting. The public is invited to be present at these meetings. Regular work sessions are also conducted on the first and third Tuesday of each month. No formal action is taken at work sessions as they are information gathering sessions. The public is also invited to be present at these meetings. ♦ Executive sessions can be held to discuss matters allowed

by law and are limited to the following situations: discussion of the purchase of sale of real or personal property; receiving legal advice from the attorney, confidential matters under State or Federal Law; security arrangements or investigations; negotiations; personnel matters if requested by the party; and discretionary documents protected under the Open Records Act. The Board must have an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the quorum present to hold an executive session. This is the only type of meeting that is not open to the public. ♦ Board retreats are typically held twice a year. The Board meets to discuss upcoming budget cycles, organizational goals and to work on team building. There is no formal action taken at retreats, and the public is invited to be present at these meetings. ♦ The Liquor Board meets on an as needed basis to review all applications, renewals and other requests for liquor licenses in the Town. The public is invited to be present at these meetings. ♦ The Town Board also sits as the Urban Renewal Authority and meets on an as needed basis to make decisions related to urban renewal matters in the Town of Frederick. The public is invited to be present at these meetings. ♦ Emergency meetings are very rare but may be called by the Mayor or any two Board of Trustees members in the event of an emergency that requires the immediate action of the Board of Trustees in order to protect the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the Town. Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District Board of Directors Fills Vacancy Frederick, Co- Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District announces the appointment of Board of Directors District Number One serving the City of Dacono. The Board of Directors interviewed three candidates for the vacancy that had been open since March 2015. Joining the Board of Directors is Darrell Brunken. A resident of Dacono for 20 years, Brunken was sworn in on May 19, 2015 and will serve until May 2016. He was born and raised in Hastings Nebraska and moved to Arvada, Colorado in 1964. Brunken was employed by the U. S. Postal Service for 37 years, as Clerk-CarrierSupervisor and Postmaster and owned and operated a small construction business for several years after retiring from the Postal Service. “I am committed to informing the residents of Dacono of the District’s current and future plans as well as making sure they are participating and have a voice to the District”, said Brunken. Revitalization of Thunder Valley Baseball and Softball Fields Frederick, Co- Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District (CVPRD) along with St. Vrain Valley School District are renovating Thunder Valley (TV) baseball and softball fields. The fields are in satisfactory condition but the infield, mounds and bullpen area are in need of repair. The project will cost about $16,700 to completely return the fields to a functioning condition. Youth Sports Coordinator Megan Zwart said, “Renovating the fields so the moisture drains properly creates a safe playable field, in return there is a reduced chance of injury and lowered frequency of rainouts”. ilas Sizemore, a Dacono resident and Erie High School graduate, has been servicing the Carbon Valley, Mead and east Longmont and Erie communities with lock service since 2013. His company known as Front Range Lock & Safe handles commercial, residential and automotive security service. In addition to 24/7 emergency service, Silas handles security cameras, electronic locks and safes. An additional area of business he covers is that of installing seamless gutters and downspouts. You may have seen Silas’ green pickup and shell in the community. He prides himself in being an honest and reliable locksmith with value pricing. n June 1, 2010, I awoke to excitedly launch my new business, Face to Face. I estimate that I’ve spoken over 50 times, created 35 business pages, and written 60 status updates a week since the beginning - totaling 14,400 status updates in five years!

Hunter’s Grille Offers a Quality Experience at Value Pricing By Jan Sciacca

unter’s Grille boasts of a top notch staff and a loyal clientele who loves the unique menu. That same clientele has helped spur an enthusiastic and growing Sunday brunch crowd. The restaurant known as Hunter’s Grille, 51 Erie Parkway, existed under three other names and ownerships before owners Don Hess and Mandy Curl purchased it in April 2014. Don admits to a rocky start when news of a “soft” opening somehow permeated Erie neighborhoods and unexpected crowds converged on the restaurant. With his new staff, new menu and food for only those he was expecting, it was overwhelming. Before he knew it, the restaurant, which hadn’t opened yet, was receiving less than stellar reviews. All that has changed. The restaurant is large and can accommodate 200 in its restaurant/bar area and another 60 on its two patios. Don and Mandy sold their Estes Park restaurant in February so Don now spends his days at Hunter’s Grille. His attention to detail shows. For those who haven’t been to Hunter’s Grille, you’re in for a treat. The menu has appetizers that range from Buffalo wings to Calamari to Rocky Mountain Oysters. The salad offerings are gourmet in nature and include selections of salmon, grilled chicken or juicy marinated grilled steak. With 10 dressings available, there is one to please everyone. There are two types of Don’s award-winning chili, assorted beef, seafood and chicken sandwiches. The menu also sports BBQ, burgers of all types, including veggie, elk and buffalo, 5 premium beef steaks, two types of trout, pecan salmon and the list goes on. Hunter’s Grille is value priced, with entrées listed at $10 or higher. The steaks are superb quality and priced at nearly half what the going rate is at comparable restaurants. Hunter’s Grille was the location for a recent Erie Rotary Club social time. There I learned from locals Jan deLuise and Ila Mettee-McCutchon that I should try their favorite appetizer picks of Calamari and artichoke cheese dip. They recommended the pecan salmon or a three meat sausage plate as a main course.

The recent brunch offering on Sundays has been a huge hit with the community. The Sunday before I met with Don, the restaurant had served 60 dozen eggs. Brunch is served Sundays, 9am-2pm and consists of traditional, “favorites,” skillets, omelets, waffles and stuffed baguettes. Hunter’s Grille carries 12 beers on tap and offers seasonal beers as well. The ambiance and the 45’ bar is a good meeting spot for imbibing in the daily special of $1.50 draft beer. Don Hess affirms, “90% of the food offerings we serve, we make from scratch.” Don typically makes all the chili gravies, sometimes arriving as early as 4 a.m. to start his recipes. He shared that he’s won a chili cook-off two years in a row. When

I asked what was in his secret recipe, he became passionate in his explanation, like an artist explaining the blends and textures in a painting. He also shared that Jack Nicholson was present at one of the chili cook-offs. The picture he presented indeed showed Jack and Don together at the contest. Don has lived an interesting life. He’s a chiropractor by education but chose not to practice. Before buying Hunter’s Grille, he and his wife Mandy owned a restaurant in Wellington for three years. Prior to that in 2008, they purchased and operated Hunter’s Chop House in Estes Park. Before venturing into the restaurant industry, Don and Mandy owned a commercial printing business in Colorado Springs for 6

years where they employed 45 employees. The original link or interest in food for Don goes back to his mother, who had a fascination for gourmet recipes. Don explained that his mother would either eat somewhere or see a recipe somewhere and decide she would make it at home. He remembers his mother being determined to serve a stuffed squid like she had seen in a magazine, even though home to them was a South Dakota farm, where Don was raised. Don credits his father and mother with showing him the creation/discovery process. Later he became aware of the commercial food environment when he worked as an Air Force health inspector. When not at the restaurant, Don likes to cook from scratch, hunt, fish and snowmobile. Mandy likes to visit her family in England, jet ski and read. eborah Cameron, a Tri-town resident, is launching a women’s craft beer group to the area. It’s called Barley’s Angel Colorado, Carbon Valley Chapter. The women’s group will meet quarterly, with the first meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 21 at 7 pm at Georgia Boys BBQ Smokehouse in Frederick. Deborah says, “Colorado is ground zero for craft beer and I began the organization to provide women who love craft beer the chance to meet other women who feel the same way and to enjoy the variety of great beers being brewed and offered in our area. I currently have two very strong chapters going – one in Boulder and one in Denver. I wanted to open one in the Tri-town area because I live here, I love the brews Georgia Boys offer, and I want to meet all the great female beer drinkers that live in this area.” Deborah wants women readers to know that beer can be more than just light, sharp or cold pilsner. There’s a range of flavors from sweet and malty to tart/sour and complex. Beer can be light and refreshing or heavier and dessert-like. She continues, “It pairs really well with food and there’s a great flavor combination for everyone.” The first meeting on July 21 will involve meeting the chef at Georgia Boys to hear how he makes his barbeque and how it pairs with beers. Three craft beers, paired specifically with three BBQ “taster” plates will be sampled. Members who come to the first meeting will help plan the group. Deborah says the chapter will serve fun, friendship and a great time to women of Frederick, Firestone and Dacono but women from outside the area (Longmont, Mead, Erie and beyond) are welcome too. finish. Prep usually includes light sanding where needed and scraping of any visibly peeling or chipped paint. Holes from nails, etc, will be patched and cracks will be filled. Retexturing drywall, if necessary will be done at this stage as well. A primer coat will be needed if there are any damaged areas or if there are any surfaces that have never been painted, and it would be applied at this stage. Tape and caulk will be next . Once the area is prepped and primed the paint coat will be applied. A high quality paint is always recommended. Ceilings will be painted first and the trim will be painted next. Before starting walls, corners and anything that needs to be painted around will be cut in by hand, then the walls will usually be rolled. After an adequate dry time a second coat of paint can be applied if needed. Once the paint has dried enough, all the tape is pulled, paper and plastic sheeting is removed, drops are pulled and the area is cleaned up. The paint job is complete!

Preventing Burnout The most important step you can take to combat burnout is to closely monitor your stress level. Prolonged high stress hinders the immune system’s ability to fight disease and can lead to fatigue, depression and eventually, burnout. The following strategies can help relieve stress:

Caregiver Burnout Burnout can be defined as “a debilitating psychological condition brought about by unrelieved stress”. Because burnout may not be readily identified the same way a sore throat or rash may be identified, caregivers may deny or simply be unaware of the warning signs. Signs of burnout include:       

Feeling pessimistic and dissatisfied Decreased energy or emotional exhaustion Withdrawing from friends or social interactions Loss of interest in work or hobbies Increased use of alcohol or medication to relax Becoming impatient, irritable or argumentative Lower resistance to illness

Join a caregiver support group. A support group is a safe place for you to share experiences and frustrations with other caregivers as well as seek advice. Set reasonable limits. You can’t be a successful caregiver if you give until there is nothing left. Be realistic about how much time and energy you can devote to caregiving. Pull back if you feel that you’re surpassing this threshold.

Frederick Seeks Artists for Community Canvas Program Program will add murals to Town of Frederick utility equipment

he Frederick Arts Commission, in partnership with Frederick Power & Light, is offering local artists a chance to display their artwork in a very public way –on utility equipment throughout the community! The Community Canvas Program is seeking applications from local artists for the 2015 cycle which will include transforming one to two utility boxes

into bright, active murals in Frederick. Decisions will be made by the Frederick Arts Commission by the end of June. “If you think about a utility box it’s really just a five-sided canvas waiting for a painting to happen,” said Frederick Arts Commission Chairperson, Laura Brown. “It seemed a shame not to take advantage of the opportunity to bring some color, some whimsy and an element of surprise into the community, and so was born the Community Canvas program.”

you do the exact same fitness and exercise routines the same way week in and week out, your body will quickly adapt to that particular workout and workload. When your body isn’t challenged beyond its comfort zone, you won’t see the results you’re looking for. It won’t take much to mix things up to prevent plateaus. That’s why attending my ladies only fitness groups will challenge you in new ways. By varying the number of reps, the way the exercises are performed, to the variety of exercises themselves will constantly surprise the body and continue to push you forward. In addition to changing the exercises in the ways I mentioned above, you can also change the weight-lifting or body-weight exercises by contracting your muscles in different ways. Isotonic movements of your muscles are either concentric (where the working muscle shortens) or eccentric (where the working muscle lengthens). When you lift the weight, your muscle contracts concentrically. An example of this is when you do a bicep curl, you’re pulling the weight toward your shoulder. When you bring the weight back down to straighten your arm, this is the eccentric contraction. At the midpoint of the exercise, when you stop moving the weight and you’re still holding it, your muscles contract statically, or an isometric contraction (where the length of the muscle stays the same). You can adjust the way you do your exercises and reps by shifting the emphasis among the three forms of muscle contraction, which provide you with three ways to do almost anything and endless ways to switch around your routine to keep it fresh and motivating. With using the example of the bicep curl above, you can slow the concentric contraction (slow up, regular speed down) or regular speed up and slow the eccentric contraction back down. You can also do a bicep curl to the half way point and then hold that isometric contraction, and then release it back down to rest. This is just using one example of one exercise, so you can see how you can have hundreds of variations with just changing up the speeds in which you perform each one.

So, You’re Thinking Of Buying Your Very First Home

hether you are buying your first home or your fifth, the steps are much the same. The differences are in your experience and comfort level. If it is your first home, you will be dealing with new processes as well as different technology. Ask questions, so you will better understand both. The first step is important. Select a Realtor with whom you will be comfortable. In addition to interviewing several agents, talk to people you know who have recently used the services of a Realtor. Ask the agents you interview if they are familiar with first time home buyers and if they like dealing with them. You should select someone who is patient, knowledgeable and willing to teach. You will need not only the answers to questions, but also guidance in knowing what questions to ask. Getting pre-qualified or pre-approved for a loan is the next step. Pre-qualifying is the process of talking to a lender to see how much you can borrow based on your income and expenses. Pre-approval is the same process, but goes one step further. The lender doing the verifications will actually approve you for a loan, subject to your finding an appropriately priced property. In today’s market, rates are low, so a fixed rate mortgage is the best way to go for most buyers. Keep in mind that the payment you arrange to make should probably not be the largest you’re qualified for. Determine an amount you’ll feel comfortable paying. You may qualify for a higher payment that your lifestyle will support. Once you know the price range for which you qualify, it’s time to start looking at homes. Many people are more comfortable looking at homes online to start with. National sites such as Realtor. com are good, as well as more local sites like zadelrealty.com can help you get a good idea of the local market. Once you have a basic idea, the most efficient way to do this is to sit down with your Realtor and discuss the homes you have found as well as your wants and needs. Make a list of the things you must have and the things you’d

like to have but aren’t mandatory. Your agent can then give you information on the properties that meet your needs. If there are few homes available, your agent can counsel you on what expectations are realistic. In some markets, there are a wide variety of properties available from bank owned homes to ones that are in great shape and ready for occupancy. At other times, like the current market, there may be very little on the market, so it is necessary to make quicker decisions. Take notes when looking at homes, and try not to look at more than four or five in the same day. Each time you look, try to keep in mind the very best property you see, and forget about the others. When you find the right home, it will then be time to write an offer. This is a legally binding contract, so make sure you understand it. Take time to read it, and get advice from a real estate attorney if you like. Address all of your concerns in the contract. Don’t assume that someone else will take care of problems. During the time between writing the offer and the closing (the date when you become the owner) much will take place. The lender will ask you for what will seem like a never-ending list of items. Don’t take it personally. Lenders ask every borrower for a substantial amount of information. You will also need to do a physical inspection of the property. While anyone can do this, hiring a professional can be money well spent. You may not feel it necessary to reject the property due to the inspection report, but it’s still good to know what you are buying. Take the same steps with the closing as you did with the contract. Read, ask questions and understand. And finally, enjoy the pride of home ownership.

ummer; it’s here, right? Mother Nature has been teasing us with an occasional sunny day sandwiched between black clouds, bolts of lightning, torrential downpours and beautiful rainbows! When I remember summertime as a kid it was bike rides with friends, hanging out at the pool, going on a blackberry hunt through the woods, riding my horse, playing catch in the front yard and NEVER setting foot inside the house before dark! Sadly, I don’t notice any of those things happening with kids today. What should be streets and parks filled with kids out playing is instead empty playground equipment in quiet neighborhoods. Instead of playing outside, kids are inside in front of screens with video controllers or smart phones in their hands. I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop this week put on by the St. Vrain Valley School District entitled ‘Learning in Motion: Integrating Magic into Every Classroom’, put on by Kim Bevill. It was fantastic! I learned more in that one day than I have in a long time. What I took away though was just how little our kids actually move today; hence the reference to the video games and smart phones. Ilearnedthatourbrainsaremeanttomove… yes, our brains! Getting our blood flowing allows the brain to move therefore increasing learning, memory, concentration and mood! Moving is essential to a brain’s function. Everything that we do is dependent on the use of our body. Conclusive research proves that movement can improve balance, coordination, flexibility, heart function, hormone swings, increases in energy, better sleep, improved stress levels…and the list goes on! How does all of this relate to a school setting you ask? According to further research, kids who move and are more physically fit are able to better perform academically. By moving and increasing blood flow and oxygen to the muscles and brain, we are able to decrease feelings of lethargy, boredom, stress and aggression. Thus allowing students to be more productive and on task rather than feeling bored which leads to trouble. As a result of attending this eyeopening workshop, Carbon Valley Academy is committed to bringing movement into the school this fall! On your visits through the school, don’t be surprised to see kids juggling bean bags, walking balance beams, playing a game with pool noodles; and that’s just for starters. But here’s the best part………it can start this summer, BEFORE school is even back in session! Get your kids moving, send them on bike rides, walks with the dog, and trips to the playground. Play catch with them, swim with them, hike, run; whatever gets them moving! The more they move, the more blood flow to the brain, the better they feel and the more productive they are. It’s going to be an exciting year at Carbon Valley Academy! There’s lots to look forward to. We will have a booth at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Frederick through July 9 if you want to learn more before the school year starts! “Your Creative Side” Paint and Sip Studio Opens By Jan Sciacca

rederick High School graduate Abby Fields, knew when she went to her first paint and sip art studio that was what she wanted to do. It took time, research, study, education and support from family but Abby opened “Your Creative Side,” a new paint and sip art instruction studio, in May of this year. When Abby moved to Longmont, after completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Hospitality from Metro State University, she saw an opportunity to pursue combining her acquired skills with her love of painting, all in an exciting venue of an art instruction studio. Your Creative Side is located in Longmont at 700 Ken Pratt Blvd, Suite 210, next to Lucky’s Market. The painting class schedule is on the studio’s website: yourcreativesidepaintstudio.com. Dennis Melosh takes Kids Toys to a Whole New Level Submitted by Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District

hen Dennis Melosh told the Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District that he wanted to donate a play kitchen to be used in the KidZone they were overjoyed. Dennis is a craftsman and takes his toy making serious. “It started with my daughter’s suggestion that I make a toy kitchen for my granddaughter’s birthday 7 years ago. It was a hit. A couple of her neighbors wanted sets, a couple of my friends wanted sets, my doctor wanted a set and the orders kept coming” said Melosh. Eight sets later they have improved with suggestions from the moms. A larger window in the oven door, two drawers for storage instead of a door with a shelf and a chalkboard was added on the back of the stove to play school. The original set is still in use. He works hard to make them enjoyable and sturdy - hopefully to become heirlooms. They are made out of 1/2” MDF with sides, shelves and back dadoed, glued and nailed. The face frame is poplar wood that is pocket screwed together. All of the edges are rounded over to prevent injuries. The stove/sink unit weighs 70 pounds. There is an option of a microwave instead of the freezer.

Melosh added, “I enjoy making different things in my wood shop. I have made desks, bookcases, and sewing cabinets, trays to hold dominoes that have inlays, toy chests, cedar chests, and many other various things. Being retired after 40 years of repairing and installing

The Friendly Fork Lunch: The Best for Seniors in Carbon Valley

Senior Friends! It’s time to encourage all of you 60 and over to come and enjoy the luncheons put on by Weld County Area Agency on Aging every Tuesday and Thursday. You do NOT have to belong to any senior center. It is a lunch provided for all seniors no matter what your life story is. The meals are good, nutritious and are prepared by University of Northern Colorado Dining Services in Greeley. Weld County Area Agency on Aging works to give you healthy meals and notates the calories, fats, etc. on their monthly menus for

each total meal so that you know what you are consuming. The idea is to help Seniors with their nutrition for a suggested donation of $3 per person. A delicious salad bar has been added every Tuesday and FREE Bingo is now offered once a month also on Tuesdays. Other ideas are being considered for activities after lunch to encourage fellowship. Enjoying the company of others in our age group, sharing life experiences and being able to contribute your knowledge and helpfulness to others is quite a plus. The program intent is to encourage Senior health, lessen stress and promote friendships. The meals are administered and served by Retired Seniors Volunteer Program personnel that want to make

Patient centered medical homes encourage coordinated care efforts to create long term healing relationships between providers and patients; ultimately improving patient outcomes by shifting focus from treatment options to prevention methods. Headaches and migraines can occur for variety of reasons. The most commonly nown sources are from dehydration, arometric pressure changes, and blood irculation. Another common, but less ell known source of headaches and migraines is due to cervical muscle tension, physical trauma, and head injury. The location of the headache or migraine will usually indicate whether or not it comes from trauma to muscle(s), or another source. Typically, headaches experienced on the forehead and behind the eyes come from the sternocleidomastoid,(SCM) the large muscle in the front of the neck, or the Scalenes, which are thinner muscles behind the SCM. These muscles are vulnerable in traumatic situations such as car accidents where the head is forced forward, and these muscles contract, causing increased muscle tension and “trigger points”. Trigger points are areas on the muscle that, when pressed or rubbed in one particular area, pain is felt in an entirely different area. For example,

during palpation and massage of the SCM, I often find Trigger points along the muscle that re-create a headache or migraine pain pattern that feels like the headache is “behind the eye”. When these Trigger points are found, they are treated through both acupuncture and massage techniques. More acupuncture points are selected according to further information the person provides regarding their health, and the nature of the headaches or migraines. The nature of the headache or migraine pattern is also important since each person has a different experience. For example, some people experience a sharp stabbing pain, others feel a pounding or dull constant ache, and some are sensitive to light and feel nauseous. Taking into consideration all of the person’s background helps to provide a more well rounded treatment in order to get to the source of the overall h e a l t h concern(s).

Carbon Valley’s Boy Scout Troop 98 is looking for Boys from ages 11 to 18 years old who want to become Boy Scouts. Boys can choose over 135 different Merit Badges to earn examples are; Finger Printing, Canoing, Camping, Archery, First Aid, Pioneering, Wilderness Survival, Space Exploration, the list goes on and on for what the Boy Scout is able to achieve. Boys can advance in rank from Scout all the way to Eagle Scout. The Boy Scouts go camping, hiking, canoing, fishing, since the Troop is led by the boys themselves they can decide what activities they want to do, having the Adult Leaders for guidance. Troop 98 is also looking for Adult Leaders who would want to become a Committee Member or an Assistant Scoutmaster. The Committee Members are responsible for tracking finances and Boy Scout Rank Advancements, submitting Tour Permits to the Council for Campouts, just to name a few ways in which an adult may volunteer their time to help out a great organization. ecently when we communicated with Erie resident Barb Coffan, we found her at a hospital in Aurora interpreting for a Deaf patient. She had been doing so for 10 hours. She brings the world alive to those who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, Deafblind, or oral. Barb holds certifications that most of us wouldn’t understand – CSC (Comprehensive Skills Certificate), OTC (Oral Transliterating Certificate), SC:L (Specialist Certificate: Legal), including a Colorado Legal Interpreting Certificate. She is qualified to interpret in a variety of legal situations and is qualified to

work as an oral interpreter, which is one who makes spoken English visible to a consumer who relies on lip-reading. She loves helping those who are challenged in the auditory area and is active in the Deaf Ministry program at East Boulder Baptist Church, 7690 East Baseline Road, Boulder. The Deaf Ministry at East Boulder Baptist Church was started in 1991. All special events of the church and Deafled events and special separate worship services are interpreted. Deaf and hard-of hearing children are also welcome in the Deaf Ministry. Advance notice is requested for children so that the Fellowship Hall. Frederick Enters IGA Public-Private Partnership for Colorado Blvd and SH52 Improvements

t the last board meeting, the Frederick Board of Trustees approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with Miners Village Metropolitan District (MVMD) to make critical road improvements near Colorado Boulevard and State Highway 52 (SH 52) that will accommodate and entice future development. In the IGA, Frederick agrees to construct and pay $1,105,000 for the following improvements:

• Short extension of 5th St. across Colorado Blvd. • Roundabout at intersection of Colorado Blvd. and 5th St. • Roundabout at intersection of Colorado Blvd. and 13th St. • As an alternate if funds permit, Frederick will construct additional capacity to accommodate the westbound SH52 traffic turning northbound onto Colorado Blvd.

In addition, MVMD agrees to construct and pay $1,000,000 for the following improvements: • Improving SH 52 and Flying Circle Blvd. intersection including installation of a complete four-direction traffic signal and the extension of William Bailey Dr. north of SH 52 for approximately 1,000 feet • Establishing acceleration/ deceleration lanes on SH 52 adjacent to Flying Circle Blvd.

“This is a great example of a public-private partnership where both sides are working together to create improvements key to encouraging economic development within our community,” said Mayor Tony Carey. “The kinds of businesses we are trying to attract in terms of retail

and primary employment want to start with a property that is shovel-ready with infrastructure already in place.” Coordination of this project will be handled by MVMD and the Town will pay 5% of the project cost to MVMD for construction management and oversight. MVMD will also coordinate the bidding of the project, which is currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in approximately 90 days. Nationally Recognized Developer Annexes into Town

n a major step toward a new master planned community development into the Town of Firestone, the Firestone Board of Trustees approved an annexation application for Brookfield Residential Colorado on May 27, 2015. The annexation includes the Brookfield Residential property along Colorado Boulevard south of Colo. Highway 66 and east of Interstate 25, extending Firestone’s current northern border. The development, which will be named Barefoot Lakes, will ultimately bring new homes and a host of new amenities to the area, an outcome Firestone community leaders welcome. “This is another one of those defining moments for our community where this is going to change everything,” said Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen. “This is a quality development that will bring

lakes, trails, nature areas, new homes, new residents and much more to our community. We look forward to a long relationship with Brookfield and are excited about the planned community they intend to bring to Firestone.” The annexation includes approximately 1,300 acres of land bordered by Colorado Boulevard and Colo. Highway 66. All parcels of the community were entitled by Weld County in 2006. Ultimately, the development is planned to include new homes as well as interconnecting trail systems, numerous parks and amenities around a 120-acre lake, located within the community boundaries and adjacent the St. Vrain State Park.
