Life’s Puzzle Pieces Cause Mysterious Maladies

B

ack pain has stifled my life. This chronic pain robbed me of a summer normally filled with vacations, motorcycling and riding my ATV. Zero energy, painful sleepless nights and apathy for any activity have been my constant companion for nearly all of 2019.

Meltdown #683 happened early October, brought on by the constant pain. In a pool of tears, I begged God for relief. None came. A bit later, I asked God why this was happening. Yes, I know the doctors say its arthritis in all my vertebrae and hip bones and they say there are a couple bulging discs, and the list goes on.

However, deep inside I sensed it was more.

In my prayers, I was also asking when did this really start? Is it really simply from sitting at my desk and computer for twenty years? I could accept that except that it came on so emphatically. One day, no pain. The next day, excruciating pain. It made no sense to my mind.

Piece by piece, the puzzle started forming a picture. What were these pieces that flitted in and out of my thoughts? Pain, for sure.

Financial issues, yes. Time, always an issue.

Family, of utmost importance. Writing… writing…what? How was my writing a part of the pain? Okay, go with it, Kelly.

I can’t afford it. I have a business to run.

My family needs me. Oh, and there’s this pain. It’s going to be very uncomfortable traveling and sitting for 12-hour training

sessions.

Still in my meltdown, I’m crying (for those of you who always read my column, you know I cry a lot), and trying to figure out all this stuff. Those pieces of the puzzle; pain, money, time, family, passion. My passion to write keeps rising to the top. My mind spins out of control with fear. Each piece of the puzzle fights for my attention.

How can I juggle my responsibilities successfully? I’m only one person.

“You can’t.” Those two words settled into my mind then my heart. “You can’t.”

It is fall. The orange flames of my fireplace mesmerize me. The warmth comforts me. I am still.

“You can’t. Not while living in fear.”

Fear. It is still there. Financial fear.

Fear of lifelong physical pain. Fear of fitting all my responsibilities into a day, the week…a month. Fear of actually pursuing my passion, a gift from God himself. Fear.

It comes to me that my back pain started abruptly in February and has only grown worse. It so happens, (coincidently, I think not), I wrote my column on, you guessed it, fear. In February, I boldly wrote about stepping back into my power. And I believed what I wrote. After that, I felt prayed for. I was strong.

I wrote and sold my first article in seventeen years. I went to a writer’s conference. I wrote and sold another article and started diligently working on my second book. Diligently turned into on again, off again. And then nothing.

Pain continues to grow, excuses stand in the way of writing and once again, I’m fretting, fretting, about those pieces in my puzzle of life. With the LORD in my life, why do I do that? Boldly forge ahead…then hide in the shadows.

I’m human. And I forget that I’m not alone in this journey.

There are two books that have changed my life and taught me who I am, what my true identity is. Although, I sometimes forget, even for lengthy times.

The Bible is one book, of course. But the other is The Forgotten Way, by Ted Dekker, which has helped me understand what the Bible says about my identity. The LORD used the second book to open my eyes to what it says in the first book.

I don’t know why it always takes a meltdown, but I’m thankful for this one.

It helped me see that my fear had buried itself deeper within me and settled itself in my back. It helped me remember that Fear is a Liar (great song by Zach Williams). And it led me to several verses that I hope I will lean on in the future when I find myself making excuses not to write. I’ve also had several relatively painless days. Praising God for that.

If you are curious about the verses, they are: Psalm 34:4 I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.

Proverbs 1:33 But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.

Saturday following Thanksgiving 11/30/19

aturday, November 23, 2019 is National Adoption Day, a collective effort to raise awareness of the more than 123,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States. A coalition of national partners — the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network — founded National Adoption Day. On November 18, 2000, the coalition and the Freddie Mac Foundation encouraged seven cities to open their courts on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving to finalize and celebrate adoptions from foster care.

The first National Adoption Day was inspired by the innovative efforts of Michael Nash, a former presiding judge of Los Angeles County’s Juvenile Court. He opened the court on Saturdays, engaged the volunteer efforts of court personnel and finalized adoptions to reduce the backlog of one of the busiest courts in the nation.

Today, policymakers, practitioners and advocates collaborate to plan these annual, one-day events in 400 cities across the United States.

To date, the dreams of more than 70,000 children in foster care have come true as part of National Adoption Day events.

Tuscany Sunny Days

I

n August, my husband and I traveled to Italy. Tuscany has been on our bucket list for quite some time. We flew into Florence, had a private transfer to our home for the week. Montecatini Terme is a town about an hour or so from Florence. It’s a great town to tour some of the area and still be able to come home to our wonderful hotel every evening. Every day, we traveled with a small group of 23. The group was diverse from young families, millennials, welltraveled seniors and first time visitors.

The countryside is all you would picture: olive trees, vineyards, small medieval towns. The amazing part was all the wonderful fresh foods and crisp house wines we experienced. Every alley you walk down has small restaurants and cafés that serve the most wonderful meals along with friendly service. You could sit forever without the rush, if you’d like. Oh, did I mention the Gelato?

Some of the places we visited included Pisa (a little too many tourists for me!), Lucca (a small town with much history and a guide that was so proud to be a resident there!), Florence to see all the works of Michelangelo including his famous David and the Ponte Vecchio which is the famous bridge with shops filled with beautiful gold jewelry.

We went through the wonderful, scenic countryside to Sienna. This town has a horse race twice every summer. The Palio di Siena has ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colors, represent ten of the seventeen contrade, or neighborhoods. Interesting is that the horse is the most important and the celebrity. If the jockey falls off the horse, he really doesn’t matter. It’s the horse that is honored. There are quite interesting stories about this yearly race.

W e traveled by bus and train to the famous Cinque T e r r e (above).

This is a string of five fishing villages. Each village is different and situated in the mountains and above the Mediterranean Sea. The only way to visit these picturesque towns is by train, boat or hiking on some challenging trails. In Vernassa, we had a terrific seafood meal. This village is known for fresh fish and ravioli. Both were very different from anything we had before. The ravioli was stuffed with grouper and had a limoncello cream sauce. We shared a sample of several different anchovies with some of our travel companions. Did I mention Gelato???

As I said, every night we came back to our home away from home. Next day on to a winery where they grow grapes on 45 year old vines. We sampled some great wines and olive oil.

That same day, we traveled to the hilltop village of San Gimignano and next to a local cheese farm and learned how the pecorino cheese is made. Later that evening, as our last night together, we had a Tuscan feast with traditional cuisine and wines in the Tuscan countryside.

Tuscany and Italy are filled with beauty, history, friendliness and the best food and wine. We’re looking at maybe going back in 2021. Interested?

Children Helping Veterans Need Your Help

his will be the third year that Jackson, Maisie, and Rainah will be Stuffing Stockings for Veterans! It all began a few years ago when our friend, Beth Skinner of Skinner Realty, put a call to action on Facebook that she was collecting stockings for veterans and if anyone wanted to contribute, we could drop them off and she would deliver them. We couldn’t think of a more fitting event to be a part of. Since then this will be our third year donating stockings. Last year with the help of many who donated, the kids were able to fill 25 stockings with essentials and treats for local veterans!

American Legion Auxiliary 1985 The American Legion Auxiliary 1985 has three major events for November and we would like to invite everyone to join us. These are open to the public. National Caregiver Month The Benefits and the Challenges

L

ocally, TRU PACE, a Program of Allinclusive Care for the Elderly, is helping older adults age in place in southwest Weld and Boulder counties. This holistic medical program opened in March of 2017 and has helped support local caregivers, whether they are the spouse, the adult child or friend. TRU PACE manages all medical care and medications, in-home services, and rehabilitation therapies, provides transportation, and has a day center Monday through Friday based in Lafayette.

Key in this model of care is caregiver support. The PACE model provides a Monday-Friday Day Program which gives the caregiver a break and they also provide respite care. In addition, caregivers of loved ones enrolled in PACE have access to supportive services for themselves. 80% of our Participants live at home and 90% of them live with or near an involved family caregiver.

Caregiver health and well-being is a growing public health issue. There are a multitude of benefits and challenges when giving care to another. For many, the benefits can include: keeping you active, mentally engaged, increasing physical performance, increased family closeness, and a sense of purpose.

And of course, there are challenges to caregiving. Caregivers have to juggle multiple roles: providing support to their loved one, maintaining a household and more often than not, a job. Many have younger children and for older caregivers, they frequently have healthcare issues of their own. Over time, a caregiver can experience social isolation, poorer nutrition, feelings of being overwhelmed and less likely to care for themselves.

This month, the Area Agency on Aging is sponsoring a six week class called “Powerful Tools for Caregivers”. It will meet Tuesdays, 10am-11:30am starting November 5 – December 10th at the

TRU PACE, a Medicare and Medicaid program, identifies and supports the unique needs of family caregivers to maintain their loved one at home.

Caregivers in TRU PACE have access to an assessment that leads to a care plan with support services, education, respite care and interventions that address their needs.

TRU PACE’s Social Work team completes a comprehensive participant and caregiver psychosocial assessment at enrollment and every 6 months to address changing participant needs, assist with advance care planning and identify and respond to caregiver support needs.

In addition, there is a monthly caregiver support group with an emphasis on educational topics related to caregiving.

These groups also create a sense of community and combat isolation. In the winter of 2020, TRU PACE hopes to launch an online evening support group.

TRU PACE’s wrap-around services help support participants and their caregivers as they try to age in place. The program is paid through Medicare and Medicaid combined or through private pay. For more information, please call 303926-4745 or go to pace.trucare.org.

Frederick High School Student John Klingensmith Invited to National Academy of Future Physicians

H

i, my name is John Klingensmith, and I am a Junior at Frederick High school. I am a very devoted student that takes my academics very seriously, and I love helping my peers. I also volunteer and teach children at my Church at LifeFellowship Frederick every Sunday.

I am taking advanced classes such as AP Biology and Medical Terminology, and plan to get enough college credits by the time I graduate to have a year and a half completed in college. In college, I will be in the medical field and become a Forensic Pathologist.

I also have an accumulative GPA of 3.982 and have won several academic letters and awards.

Recently I received a letter informing me that I am invited to the National Academy of Future Physicians to represent Frederick High School’s Senior Class in Boston, Massachusetts. I will receive the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence. During the conference I will: meet some of the greatest minds in medical technology and several Winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, observe surgery and ask questions, discuss various topics in medical developments or dilemmas, and earn college credit for every day I participate!

However, in order to attend, I need to raise $3,500. That includes flight, hotel, and tuition to attend with my parents. The deadline for the full amount due is November 20th.

I am writing this letter to humbly ask for your financial help. I hope that you will see that this is a good investment in, not only me, but also FHS and the Carbon Valley. Any financial gift is appreciated and I thank you, ahead of time for your consideration of my request.

I am honored to be considered for this award and representing my Senior class at Frederick High School.

hen we think of inflammation it is most often in relation to a physical injury.

The symptoms are redness, swelling, pain, warmth to the touch, and loss of function to the affected tissue.

Affected tissue is the key phrase here, indicating that inflammation applies to the entire mammalian system, (thinking of pets too!) and these symptoms can arise anywhere, to any and all organs and tissues. oor posture can happen over time and you may not even know you’re starting to slouch or have a protruding head.

Some causes of poor posture are regular activities in our daily lives, especially when prolonged and done every day. These can include staring at a computer screen, sitting in chairs, driving, looking down at a cell phone or tablet, carrying a bag on the same shoulder or carrying small children, and standing for long periods of time.

The American Journal of Pain Management says that “Posture effects and moderates every physiological function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.”

Poor posture with slouched shoulders lead to overstretched upper back muscles and tight chest muscles. Your best defense against poor posture, back/neck pain, and injury is a strong upper body that includes strengthening your core/back muscles and stretching.

Most people with poor posture will start to experience neck and back pain in time. If you find yourself slouching at your desk or while standing, that can be an indication your core isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. My new Corrective Exercise Programs (that will be available soon), will help you to correct some old habits and injuries to assist your body in functioning better overall.

The good news is that the main factors affecting posture are not difficult to change. Here are some quick tips on how to stretch and strengthen some of those muscles:  Head Retraction Look forward with neutral posture. Bring head directly backwards giving yourself a “double chin”, hold 3 seconds and return back.

Don’t tilt your head up or down.

 Pectoral Stretch - stand in the frame of a smaller doorway with arms out to the side at a 90 degree angle at the elbow joint without shrugging your shoulders. With arms against the door frame, lean forward slowly to stretch your chest muscles.  Immediately improve posture by lengthening your spine and standing up taller by imagining you’re pulling up on a string coming out the top of your head that is attached to all of your vertebrae.  If you sit for long periods of time, take a break from sitting in a chair every half hour for two minutes to stand, stretch, or walk down the hall.  When you’re sitting, pull your navel in toward your spine and hold this for as long as you can (without holding your breath).  Activities such as walking, swimming, or bicycling are great cardiovascular exercises, while strength training exercises will help the muscles surrounding the core and back to stay strong. A balance of core and back muscle strength is important to help support the upper body and maintain good posture.  Planks and dumbbell row’s are exercises that work to increase strength in your core, shoulders, and back muscles.

How Horses Help With Mental Health Issues

ar from being the simple beasts of burden or transportation tools they were in the past, horses today have become key players in the mental rehabilitation of many people around the world.

Equine-assisted therapy is an umbrella term encompassing several therapeutic activities involving horses.

Hippotherapy, utilizes the movement of horses for physical, occupational, or speech therapy, though horses have been used for physical therapy since at least the fifth century B.C., the formal discipline of hippotherapy wasn’t established until the 1960s.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) a type of experiential psychotherapy that uses horses to help in the treatment of psychological and behavioral issues, is a much newer activity.

Naturalization Ceremony

T

uesday, October 8, 2019 Esther DeManche, Registrar and Connie Masson, Recording/ Correspondence Secretary of the Carbon Valley Chapter NSDAR, participated in the Immigration and Naturalization Ceremony held at Twin Peaks Charter School in Longmont.

Thirty new citizens came from 14 different countries including China, Ireland, Germany, Israel and others. The largest majority were from Mexico.

Esther and Connie were privileged to hand out United States flags as well as bookmarks with the Preamble to the Constitution or the American’s Creed. The Twin Peaks Choir sang the Star-Spangled Banner acapella in four-part harmony. Additional Twin Peaks students led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

We were honored to be a part of this Ceremony – the third one for our new chapter.

The past two ceremonies were at the Boulder Library and the headquarters in Denver at the Immigration and Naturalization Administration building. Electronic Lockboxes

f you have been in the home buying or selling mode over the last few months, you may have noticed a different kind of lockbox on homes.

The latest technology through SentriLock has been adopted by the Realtor Associations and MLS and is beginning to be used Realtors.

Accountability and stepped up security are the main benefits for homeowners.

As with the old mechanical boxes, you give your Realtor a key to put inside and set up a protocol as to what approvals are necessary for the showing. But instead of 3 simple letters or someone’s year of birth, the new technology has a much higher level of security.

With the new Bluetooth enabled boxes, a Realtor with the app on their phone, just taps a button on the box and enters their PIN on their phone and the box opens. No more concern about someone seeing the code or fumbling around in the cold or poor lighting. The listing agent will also receive a notice when the showing begins and ends, so they can pass that information along to the seller.

Your Realtor can generate one time codes for use by inspectors, appraiser or others authorized to get into the home. Since the code is only good for one use, you don’t have to worry about someone coming back or giving it out.

If you don’t have one of these boxes in use, ask your Realtor about getting one.

e’ve still got a couple of months until 2019 draws to a close, but it’s not too early to make some end-of-the-year financial moves. In fact, it may be a good idea to take some of these steps sooner rather than later.

Here are a few suggestions: • Boost your 401(k) contributions.

Like many people, you might not usually contribute the maximum amount to your 401(k), which, in 2019 is $19,000, or $25,000 if you’re 50 or older. Ask your employer if you can increase your 401(k) contributions in 2019, and if you receive a bonus before the year ends, you may be able to use that toward your 401(k), too.

• Add to your IRA. You have until April 15, 2020, to contribute to your IRA for the 2019 tax year, but the more you can put in now and over the next few months, the less you’ll have to come up with in a hurry at the filing deadline. For 2019, you can put up to $6,000 in your IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older.

• Review your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to review your investment portfolio at least once a year, and now is as good a time as any. But don’t make

any judgments based solely on your results over the past 10 months. Instead, look carefully at how your portfolio is constructed. Is it still properly diversified, or has it become overweighted in some areas? Does it still fit your risk tolerance, or do you find yourself worrying excessively about short-term price swings? These are the types of factors that might lead you to make some changes, possibly with the help of a financial professional.

• Don’t forget about your RMDs. Once you turn 70½, you generally need to start taking withdrawals – the technical term is “required minimum distributions,” or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar plan. After the first year in which you take these RMDs, you must take them by the end of each year thereafter. If you don’t withdraw at least the minimum amount (calculated based on your age, account balance and other factors) you face a penalty of 50% of what you should have taken out – a potential loss of thousands of dollars. So, take your RMDs before Dec. 31. The financial services provider that administers your IRA or 401(k) can help you determine the amount you must withdraw.

• Think about next year’s opportunities. It happens to almost all of us: A year has passed, and we haven’t taken the actions we had planned. So, start thinking now about what you

want to do in 2020 from a financial standpoint. Can you afford to ratchet up your investments in your retirement plans? If you have children or grandchildren, have you started saving for college?
