Rob Shepherd Chairman
Welcome to the spring edition of our newsletter. I would like to start by thanking those employees who donated their 2016 Final Hour salary to us. Your help goes a long way to making a difference to the lives of the physically disabled in Guernsey. 2017 is a landmark year for the Home as we celebrate our 30th anniversary. Some of our orriginal residents are still enjoying the benefits
of this remarkable place and long may we continue to help those who need us the most. As part of our celebrations we have a number of activities and events planned from treasure hunts, concerts, a large party at Saumarez Park and many more activities besides. There’s something for everyone, We endeavour to put the fun into fund raising so I hope you can join in the celebrations.
Show stoppers The residents and day visitors staged their very own Parish Show. Activities manager Nikki Stephens said it was very popular with everyone who took part. “All our residents have affiliations with the summer shows so we decided to create our own. We have a lot of day visitors coming in and they live in different parishes, so it is quite hard for us as a group to enter any of the shows, so I thought it would be nice to try to have a show here. It has been a great success. Lots of people have entered all kinds of things from cakes to plants.”
LOCAL BUSINESS SUPPORT OUR FINAL HOUR CAMPAIGN APPEAL Once again Guernsey’s businesses and their employees have been very supportive in 2016 participating in our annual Final Hour appeal. The Home and our residents would like to thank all those who generously donated their fiinal hour’s salary to the Home. With such financial pressure on employees and their employers in this current economic climate the generosity you have shown has been nothing short of remarkable and we thank you kindly for taking part.

UNSUNG HEROES A heart felt thanks goes out to Country Butchers who have done it again! They have raised a total of £611.86. A massive thank you to John Hurst and his team for raising these for funds for the Home. Country Butchers also made our resident’s New Years Eve celebration all the better by providing steaks for everyone. This is something Country Butchers have been doing for the last six years.
FESTIVE FUN The Home was buzzing at Christmas in preparation for our first Town Church Christmas Fayre. The Home’s resident chef Calum, made sumptuous festive crepes and the staff and residents with the help of our volunteers, made the beautiful Christmas Wreaths which once again went like hot cakes! Thank you to everyone who bought a wreath and helped raise well over £1,000 on the day. Everyone’s hard work was rewarded with a Christmas lunch courtesy of OGH Hotel. We cant’ thank you enough Andrew Chantrell and your team!
FIVE ISLANDS WALK COMPLETED
Gerda Cirule and Victorija Okulevica
Guernsey Cheshire Home care workers, Gerda Cirule and Victorija Okulevica completed their fund raising challenge in style. They spent five days completing a walk around Jersey, Alderney, Guernsey, Sark and then Herm to raise money for the Guernsey Cheshire Home. The girls are both qualified care workers with the Home. Originating from Latvia, the girls trained for a number of weeks, religiously pounding the roads of Guernsey to get themselves prepared for the journey ahead. The Jersey leg was the most daunting, approximately 48 miles of undulating cliff paths and winding roads to complete. Guernsey was equally as challenging with 38 miles
completed. “Gerda and I were very keen to give something back to the Home and the excellent work it does for those who suffer with physical disability. It is a wonderful place with lovely residents and they were our inspiration,” said Vicky. The girls raised over £2,000 for the charity.
F Guernsey Ladies Rugby braved the cold and launched the biggest Dip yet. Over 500 people braved the wintry conditions for the 17th annual Boxing Day Dip and ran into the icy Cobo Bay waters. Sea temperature was recorded at 10C but it felt much much colder. The tide was out but as it turned out this was just as well due to the high turn out. The fancy dress theme was ‘sporting heroes’ and there were plenty on show. We also had plenty of local celebrities including our good friend John Fernandez from ITV. The Rockmout served hot drinks and hundreds of islanders braved the ‘freezing’ temperatures as they lined up along the bay and made a dash for the sea. Regular dipper Charlie Atkinson, 25, said he liked to keep warm with a bottle of whisky. ‘We always bring a bottle down and have a quick swig before we go in and then as soon as we’re out we have another swig.’ Young swimmers are increasing in numbers Jack Cuttler and Sydney Ogier, both eight, loved it. ‘It was so much fun, but my feet are frozen,’, said Jack. The annual Dip raised over £5,000 for the Home. A big thanks to Dave Chester and John Webster for helping to organise this fabulous event.
FLIPPING MARVELOUS
Guernsey’s best chefs cooked up the finest pancakes and helped raise hundreds of pounds for the Home at our annual pancake day celebratios at the Town Church. Not much of a write-up on this. Lt-Governor, Vice-Admiral Ian Corder and his wife Kathryn attended the event and helped flip a few pacakes for hungry visitors. The OGH have provided their chefs for the last eight pacake day fund raisers and were joined by St Pierre Park chefs and ches from The Auberge who provided Scottish pancakes which went down really well; as did the savoury pancakes made by the St Pierre Park. The OGH provided their usual delicious fresh fruit pancakes.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS The Guernsey Cheshire Home will be celebrating 30 years of caring for local residents with severe physical disability at its base in St Peter Port, the Island’s capital. The Home first opened its doors in 1987 and was established by a group of pioneering local professionals who recognised the need for a dedicated care facility for those local residents suffering from a range of physical disabilities. They wanted to create an environment far removed from the geriatric facility that many people with disability resided within at that time. A Steering Committee was appointed and together they raised enough money from donations to buy and then refurbish a property on the outskirts of the Town. Nic Mountain, the Home’s Manager said “Today, the building is home to 11 full time residents and a number of respite visitors all coping with the challenge of severe physical disability aged from their 20s to 80s. We provide full time care for islanders with many severe physical disabilities including multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, spinal injuries, arthritis and the devastating effects of permanent paralysis.”
The ‘Home’ has become exactly that for its residents, many of who have been enjoying the freedom it provides for a number of years. Charlie Trebilcock who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his prime, has been a resident for four years. “The Home has given me so much opportunity to enjoy life to the full. I love sailing and have been able to continue this passion with the help of the care workers. I enjoy the daily activities but if I need time to myself my room is sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of daily life,” said Charlie. Activities are provided every day including trips out, all with a focus on living an independent and rewarding life. All residents decorate their rooms however they like. This independence also means they can contribute to society. The Home provides trips out around the beautiful island through a fleet of specially adapted vehicles, which the residents can call upon whenever they require a visit away from the Home. These vehicles have been donated to us over the years. Although the Home receives no direct funding from local government or Leonard Cheshire Disability it has managed to thrive over the years through donations and extensive fund raising initiatives. In 2017 the Home is organising a range of activities and events to celebrate this landmark year. These will include a major family party at Saumarez Park on Sunday 16th July called Home in the Park.
