WELCOME
APR – JUL AT CONTACT Our summer programme sees a fantastic range of shows, events and projects with an international focus. We're really pleased to present the hard-hitting Scorch from Northern Ireland, following a gender-fluid young person and inspired by real-life news events. Meanwhile Matt Fenton © Joel Chester Fildes Contact supported artist Sophie Willan presents her new show about growing up in care. For dance fans, TURN micro festival of new dance returns followed by the stunning Leviathan from James Wilton Dance company, inspired by the novel Moby Dick. We continue to present unique family shows, this time the wonderful We Come from Far Far Away by UK/Scandinavian company New International Encounter, exploring the experience of child refugees, and taking place in a huge yurt-style tent! For radical performance lovers, Anglo-Belgian company Reckless Sleepers present their classic Schrödinger with a particular relevance to the current political climate; and the brilliant Action Hero work with Contact Young Company on a new show, 15 Minutes, inspired by Andy Warhol. Finally, we’re delighted to rekindle our relationship with Manchester International Festival, hosting an important residency for dance makers led by New York sensation FlexN. 97 years go by in a flash. An afternoon lasts an eternity. In a care home lounge somewhere off the A1, 97-year-old Marsha Hewitt begins the last day of her life. But she cannot go quietly. As the radiators burn and Jeremy Kyle blares, rivalries, relatives and murderous impulses jostle for space on the Axminster carpet. By teatime, a riot is brewing. The award-winning Inspector Sands (A High Street Odyssey, If That’s All There Is, Hysteria) shine a spotlight on how we cope, or fail to cope, with ageing. ★★★★★ ‘A moving and important story’ Three Weeks ★★★★★ ‘Wonderfully dark and surreal’ Broadway Baby Commissioned by Harlow Playhouse. FUTURES THEATRE: OFFSIDE By Sabrina Mahfouz and Hollie McNish. A new play inspired by real, untold stories from the world of women’s football. It is 1881. It is 1921. It is 2017. Four women from across the centuries live, breathe, and play football. Whilst each of them face very different obstacles in pursuing their dream profession, the possibility that the beautiful game will change their futures — and the world — is tantalisingly close.
Offside is told through lyrical dialogue, poetry, and punchy prose, placing the audience on the touchline of the game of a lifetime. ‘Her use of language is rhythmic and lyrical’ The Stage (on Sabrina Mahfouz’s Dry Ice) ‘I can’t take my ears off her’ Benjamin Zephaniah (on Hollie McNish) Supported by Arts Council England, The Foyle Foundation, The Professional Footballers’ Association, The Leche Trust and Unity Theatre Trust.
